A.1 There are also instances where drawing more attention to the rebellion in play will only increase the amount of lost instruction time. If possible, wait to address the Ss later. #SquirrelsChat

A.2 To me, this level screams meaningful and authentic #formativeassessment #squirrelschat Thoughts?
  • beckyshy Feb 15 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: Super simple but one of my all time favorite strategies is using talking tokens! #squirrelschat
  • jamesmccrary Feb 15 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2. Try asynchronous text for collaboration. Ss can feel@less intimidated if they aren’t out on the spot or have to physically put themselves out there when they aren’t comfortable with their peers or T just yet. #squirrelschat
  • MrBillySpicer Feb 15 @ 8:19 PM EST
Nice, Becky! What level have you used this strategy with? #SquirrelsChat
    In reply to @beckyshy
  • shamrockblvd28 Feb 15 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: get excited for the students and let them know you are invested; you want them to be successful. Also let students work together one who is actively involved with one who may not be can promote participation. #SquirrelsChat
  • MrRogersTech Feb 15 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: Allow the S’s to make decisions that give them ownership in the class. #SquirrelsChat

A.3 One huge shift for me to avoid these levels of engagement was to implement visible thinking routines. #SquirrelsChat
  • beckyshy Feb 15 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3: Students take more pride and ownership in assignments that have visibility and a level of permanence. Using blogs to assess students is a great example of this. #squirrelschat

    In reply to @beckyshy
  • shamrockblvd28 Feb 15 @ 8:31 PM EST
A3: knowing how a student learns is important; audio, visual, tactile, kinesthetic - using a variety of these is helpful #SquirrelsChat
  • MrBillySpicer Feb 15 @ 8:31 PM EST
So, what you're saying is to avoid the one size fits all approach, Amanda?! :) #SquirrelsChat
    In reply to @shamrockblvd28
  • vekazee Feb 15 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: In my environment, ritual compliance is common. Most move upward but others do not. Helping students to make connections with how the content can help them achieve their own goals usually results in more positive engaging outcomes. #squirrelschat

    Q.4 coming up in a minute, #SquirrelsChat!
  • MrBillySpicer Feb 15 @ 8:35 PM EST
Q.4 is here! Strategic Compliance often dupes the observer into thinking the student is engaged, but upon further review, is not at all. This can be observed when learners are in front of a device and appear to be “busy” or engaged. #SquirrelsChat
  • vekazee Feb 15 @ 8:36 PM EST
Thanks for the lead in...some of my younger students have difficulty asking questions - as in they don't seem to know how to form the words to describe exactly what they need. This is a good resource. #SquirrelsChat

  • jamesmccrary Feb 15 @ 8:37 PM EST
A4. Changing the method of assessment to how the Ss want to be assessed. Of course, you want to see their ability, but Ss come up with creative ways to show what they know. #squirrelschat

A4. Compliance is a 4 letter word. All too often, compliance is being assessed as much of not more than understanding. Take away the compliance aspect by giving Ss a true choice. #squirrelschat #diveintoinquiry #freeinquiry

  • vekazee Feb 15 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4: This can be tricky. I sometimes find problem solving brings about engagement. They have to see the need, feel it, connect with it, then develop an emotional personal response. Somehow, the light bulb goes off that creates a new excitement. #squirrelschat
