Quick #squirrelschat intro: I'm Emily from @Squirrels and when I hear student engagement I have mixed feelings. I love knowing that students are engaged in the classroom, but engagement can look different in every situation. Looking forward to getting some terminology tonight!

A1: Hi. I'm Valerie. I teach teen girls in a juvenile justice facility in Kentucky. It usually takes 2-4 weeks to get our ss positioned to really get engaged. #SquirrelsChat
This is great, Amanda. Sounds easy to do and own as a teacher, but often times the teacher can make the situation worse by their response! #SquirrelsChat
A.1 There are also instances where drawing more attention to the rebellion in play will only increase the amount of lost instruction time. If possible, wait to address the Ss later. #SquirrelsChat
Interesting, Becky! I like this idea. Especially as you gain more insight into your group of students. I can see this shifting year to year, but having a great place. #SquirrelsChat

I try to give students options! They learn and respond differently. Allowing flexibility and the security of a safe classroom can foster more participation. #squirrelschat
A2. Try asynchronous text for collaboration. Ss can feel@less intimidated if they aren’t out on the spot or have to physically put themselves out there when they aren’t comfortable with their peers or T just yet. #squirrelschat
A2: get excited for the students and let them know you are invested; you want them to be successful. Also let students work together one who is actively involved with one who may not be can promote participation. #SquirrelsChat
A2 I always tried to show appreciation in different ways (think 5 love languages) so students knew their participation was valued, welcomed, and appreciated. #squirrelschat
A3: Students take more pride and ownership in assignments that have visibility and a level of permanence. Using blogs to assess students is a great example of this. #squirrelschat
A3: In my environment, ritual compliance is common. Most move upward but others do not. Helping students to make connections with how the content can help them achieve their own goals usually results in more positive engaging outcomes. #squirrelschat
"Visible Thinking is a flexible and systematic research-based approach to integrating the development of students' thinking with content learning across subject matters." #SquirrelsChat
Great point in the connections element, Valerie. As teachers we need to find those entry points into meaningful work to increase Ss buy-in. #SquirrelsChat
Q.4 is here! Strategic Compliance often dupes the observer into thinking the student is engaged, but upon further review, is not at all. This can be observed when learners are in front of a device and appear to be “busy” or engaged. #SquirrelsChat
Thanks for the lead in...some of my younger students have difficulty asking questions - as in they don't seem to know how to form the words to describe exactly what they need. This is a good resource. #SquirrelsChat
A.4 As an #instructionalcoach, I have been spending a lot of time working with teachers in avoiding strategic compliance when it comes to mobile devices. #SquirrelsChat
A4. Changing the method of assessment to how the Ss want to be assessed. Of course, you want to see their ability, but Ss come up with creative ways to show what they know. #squirrelschat

A3 In our #pizzawheel session, @beckyshy and I shared the power of student acknowledgement committees and how that can encourage student ownership and engagement. #SquirrelsChat
A4. Compliance is a 4 letter word. All too often, compliance is being assessed as much of not more than understanding. Take away the compliance aspect by giving Ss a true choice. #squirrelschat#diveintoinquiry#freeinquiry
A4: One of the most influential things I've read is called "Influence without Authority", it outlines different "currencies" that matter to people and using those "currencies" to inspire good work https://t.co/sarfENI9hY#squirrelschat
A4: This can be tricky. I sometimes find problem solving brings about engagement. They have to see the need, feel it, connect with it, then develop an emotional personal response. Somehow, the light bulb goes off that creates a new excitement. #squirrelschat
Q.4 is here! Strategic Compliance often dupes the observer into thinking the student is engaged, but upon further review, is not at all. This can be observed when learners are in front of a device and appear to be “busy” or engaged. #SquirrelsChat
Yup. The correlation between the two in education is scary. A good bit of upper level undergrad and graduate studies work to undo conformity Ss learn in traditional primary/secondary education. #squirrelschat
It's a great read! It had so much impact on me when I was an instructional coach, which is a classic example of role that requires having a lot of influence but not much authority to accomplish it #squirrelschat
A5. Start with telling the Ss exactly what you want them to learn throughout the process, then give them some choices on the method of assessing not only the outcomes, but the process itself. #squirrelschat
A5: Have the S’s share what they have learned in a lesson to the class. This helps the S’s get over not wanting to share in front of the class. So wish this would have happened to me in school. #SquirrelsChat
A.5 This ideal level of engagement speaks to clarifying the learning journey for all Ss. Framing the learning in away that invites them in to explore, question, and extend. #SquirrelsChat
A5: We spent sev days on Cyberbullying. In the middle, the shooting @ Marshall Co HS in KY occurred. We watched several videos, had sincere discussions and prompted a campaign for call to action. Ss had options, varied resources and tools. They did EXCELLENT! #squirrelschat
A5: I use @padlet to facilitate choice and voice. I provide different types of content like a podcast, a video, or an article and Ss can choose which they prefer. Padlet allows them to respond in various ways too (writing, recording audio or video, or drawing) #squirrelschat
A5: i currently have a student taking college classes; we are working on priority and choosing which class to work on and how much time to spend. At first i had to prompt but now she is working and prioritizing on her own. #SquirrelsChat
Great use of a tool, Becky! Anytime Ss can be engaged (see what I did there?) or encounter the content across multiple avenues is going to be a win! #SquirrelsChat
I used to teach college students and this was a huge topic of conversation in the transition to college courses. Different schedules, priorities, and resources available. Happy to hear you're helping her navigate new territory! #squirrelschat
A. 6 The work of Schlecty has been a driving force for me and my colleagues. It's helped provide a new lens of which to observe Ss achievement. #SquirrelsChat
A6: This framework is new to me, but I can see it being tremendously helpful as a way to start dialogue around levels student engagement. It's easy to think of engagement as either noncompliant/disruptive or all in, when in fact there is an entire spectrum #squirrelschat
Last question of the night, #SquirrelsChat participants!
Let's hear your final thoughts on how this framework can enhance conversations with your colleagues. #StudentMotivation
A6: building a good relationship and knowing your students; you will be able to identify where the student is in the model and find ways to move them up the scale. #SquirrelsChat
Well, that's a wrap on tonight's #SquirrelsChat! Big thanksn to @emilycarle and the entire @Squirrels crew for the support and fabulous conversation! Thanks for joining in, everyone! Until next time! 🐿️
