Welcome to today's #LDchat! This is Dan with the Understood team. We're joined today by Louise Baigelman, executive director of Story Shares, to discuss ways to motivate struggling readers. She'll be tweeting as @StoryShares. #reading
A1: When you are reading to your child, she is beginning to learn how to make meaning from text, and building positive associations around reading. She can use that foundation to bridge to the task of independent reading. #ldchat
A1 Reading with a child attaches fond memories to reading, especially if a child has trouble reading on their own, they still have something to smile about when they think of reading. #ldchat
A1) I have fond memories of my parents reading to me. It helped build a bond and open a world of imagination, one I later couldn't wait to dig into when I had time on my own. #LDChat
I totally agree. I have a learning disability that makes reading difficult, but my dad would read to my siblings and I and I loved those times. #ldchat
A1: The support we provide when reading to children allows them to feel relaxed in the process. They're not alone. They can focus more deeply on the content, which, when relevant to their ages/interests, is ultimately what will engage them & inspire independent reading. #LDchat
A2: Graphic novels can be especially great for hesitant/struggling readers because the imagery not only adds intrigue, but also provides additional context so readers are able to approach written words with more confidence and understanding. #ldchat
A2) Graphic novels can take the pressure off of struggling readers. They aren't faced with an intimidating wall of text, and can infer context clues from the illustrations that can help them decode what they are reading. #LDChat
A2: Like graphic novels, book series can inspire greater confidence in #readers. Spending more time with certain characters & author styles builds familiarity: "I know this!" therefore, "I can do this!" @storyshares offers several series here: https://t.co/AXZXjpApWv#LDchat
Q3. How might assistive technology be used to help a student who struggles to read? What are some examples of relevant #AssistiveTech and how do they work? #reading#LDchat
A3: Technology can help overcome multiple barriers when it comes to reading: for example, trouble with decoding text, and negative associations with traditional print books. Technology can make reading more approachable. Audiobooks and text-to-speech are great tools. #ldchat
Q1: Modeling is everything-motivate by example. #listeningcomprehension is highly valuable, #audiobooks or "audio adults" are NOT cheating. Read a book that was a fav of yours from childhood and talk about how it moved you. It will take time, esp. for a #reluctantreader#reading
"Listening to audiobooks won't slow down the development of your child's #reading skills. In fact, many experts will tell you it can help make her a better reader." #LDchat@NEATwithJamiehttps://t.co/hWzpFpP71x
#ldchat My child is dyslexic so he loves to read nonfiction stories because the vocabulary is a little more limited and where as fiction there's a lot more of metaphors and similes and so he likes being able to 'know' the words and easily understand the story
I love Voice Dream Reader; affordable app for iOS/Android that integrates text-to-speech with tools for custom fonts, colors, spacing, highlights #LDChat
Developing a love of #reading can help kids build and reinforce their reading skills. Here are 16 ways to encourage your grade-schooler to read. #LDchathttps://t.co/TqHVB05rRG
I think providing opportunities for people to read together is really important. Taking turns reading out loud with family or peers that you trust helps you set aside time for reading, focus on the story and practice your reading voice somewhere you feel safe #LDChat
A4: Motivation lives where interest and ability intersect. We need to provide choices that struggling/hesitant readers not only can read, but want to read. Books with approachable language and format, plus interesting characters and relatable themes. #ldchat
#Reading can become an even bigger battle in middle school, especially for kids with learning and attention issues. Try these 10 ways to encourage your middle-schooler to read. #LDchathttps://t.co/Ug09OV5BVh
A4 Making reading relational helps motivate readers. Also reenacting the story that is being read is a good way to instill comprehension and make reading fun. #ldchat
If your teen struggles with #reading, getting her to sit down and actually do it can be challenging. But it doesn't have to be a battle. Use these 10 strategies to encourage her to read more. #LDchathttps://t.co/kaj7pJfxU2
