#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?
If you get it, let us know how much fun it is. We're building a game library at school and this might be a perfect addition to the collection! @DSA_LMC
Q1: What has been one of your greatest successes within the classroom this year? Or what has been the most fun you've had in the classroom this semester?

Q1: What has been one of your greatest successes within the classroom this year? Or what has been the most fun you've had in the classroom this semester?
#games4ed
A1: I have all my upper grades using Google classroom and watching their assignments using screencast o matic. They love the freedom. Also getting my kindergarten classes on the computer with those huge username #games4ed I am superwoman
A1: May sound like a broken record, but the implementation of version of the Boss Battles, now including double XP for first "perfect hit". Kids super excited about testing #games4ed
Launching my year long game has been a huge success for me. It has not only inspired me but my students. Also just general relationship building and overall FUN...I ❤️my class this year! #games4ed
A1: the most fun I’ve had in the classroomwas when I put out a “buffet” of art supplies and materials and allowed each Ss to make whatever they wanted...I was terrified to try this but their creativity was off the charts amazing and I’ve never seen so much fun #Games4Ed
A1- I taught my students the card game ‘Bogus’ (commonly known by another less savory name ;). They won’t stop asking me to play at choice time! #games4ed
Yes considering it has cap letters, our computers do not have the cap locks key, so they press shift. Also they have numbers in them too! My students are amazing! #games4ed
A2: better question when did I not fail this year? Example today, I kept calling the classes the wrong grade not on purpose. It is all part of the learning process.#games4ed
A2: Been struggling ith one class of super-chatty 5th graders. Not their fault, just who they are. Been having to adjust everything as I really cannot talk for more than literal 30 seconds. #games4ed
A2: a struggle was managing work life and personal time...I have not done a good job of that and have learned that I need to improve as I can’t be as good an educator/leader if I don’t take care of my needs first #Games4Ed
I've been feeling similarly with a class of seniors. Good kids, but tired of always waiting for them to quiet down. They correct each other, but doesn't feel like we're gaining ground on this...#games4ed
A2: It still a struggle to get most other educators on-board to GBL....no matter how much research, or how inherently obvious it seems to us still so hard for the system to pair learning with games. #games4ed
Amen. I, too, have been working on this and really bad this month. I'm really going to put my foot down on extra duties next year...something has got to come off my coaching plate... #games4ed
Q3: What is a new risk, strategy, technique, game, or other activity you tried this past semester? How did it go? Would you recommend it or chalk it up to experience?
#games4ed
A2 - each time I try something new there is a level of failure. I’d say my biggest struggle has been keeping up with handing out XP and PowerUp cards on earned side quests. Also, getting battles done in a class period...it’s improving though. #games4ed
Totally agree. I think #gbl#gamification is still so new in the larger scheme of things that it will take time. Even getting some Ts to use tech is a struggle #games4ed
A2- I’m back to teaching all subjects after being math only for a few years. Just now starting to feel good about where we are in SS and Sci. #games4ed
A3: Pairing up with a teacher willing to give digital game-based learning a chance in his class for a whole unit and working together as a PLC to make it happen has been awesome! #games4ed
A2: I always start off the year saying I am going to do weekly this or that and it falls to the wayside. Need to get into the game and hold my word to some of these - #games4ed
A3: I have students assess their own work and behavior instead of asking me how they did...it has been a game changer(for most students)...they have to be honest with themselves and I’ve seen it give them ownership of their work and actions #Games4Ed
A2: My biggest struggle this year is my group of super charters. They are an amazing group of kids, but I struggle with being able to go a few minutes without having to stop. It’s a work in progress! #games4ed
LOL. I'm getting to the age of "What period is this?" or I'll remind students of upcoming due dates only to realize that I'm reminding the wrong class! #games4ed
A3 getting rid of homework mostly, spending more time active in class, Ss working in stations, leading more, giving me more time to interact with them #games4ed
This consistency is a good pt. Sometimes I struggle to know whether something doesn't work and I should stop, or something doesn't work but it could with consistency

Hey, nice to see you :) . It is going, have been staying up most nights till 130 or 2 since Thanksgiving break, one submitted, 2nd almost ready, 3rd in progress :) how are you #games4ed

Interesting, I have a group of Ss this year where the anxiety is so high they come up to me during writing and ask me to read over a sentence or a paragraph and tell them if it is good before they move forward. It saddens me and it is also perplexing. #games4ed
Oh yeah! I'm known for copy/pasting an assignment from a class to modify for another class, and I'll forget to change the title--Oh, the confusion I create! #games4ed
I have a Google Site created..I’ve been posting here, but I’ve also been using Canvas to share announcements. I’m finding the quicker quests go over well...I’ve also done some hiding of QR Codes. I’m experimenting #Games4Ed

A3: I've been having my students create Learning Apps on https://t.co/yq22W8Fcsa and they have really enjouyed how easy it is and how "nicely" they turn out. Only caveat is the "don't remember PW because there is nothing I can do for them #games4ed
I'm right with you! Many of my students don't like assessing themselves, but they're thinking and talking much more seriously about their learning when we conference. It's hard, but it's good #games4ed
A3: I have a ton of cabinets in my room. So I made a game board. I use class dojo as the point tracker and I have pictures of their teacher's faces as the game pieces. Every twenty points they land on a square with a reward. One class made it to free time after break.#games4ed
A4: I have been on a quest run this entire semester, every unit was redesigned as an adventure quest but To Kill a Mockingbird is my next reading unit and I don't really want to make that a quest. Not sure? #games4ed
Thanks! I've been noticing the same about quicker quests and thinking of focusing more on those. And moving toward more quests that focus on goal-setting and other soft-skills #games4ed
A4: Id like to get a little more technology happening in the art room. I just got 5 tablets thru https://t.co/99AdE6CSjV and can’t wait to see what we can do #Games4Ed
I started with the physical box and slowly moved to digital with the box at the end. I found digital were easier to manage with a whole class. If you have any suggestions I’m all ears 👂 #Games4Ed

A4: Looking for ideas. I have yet to experiment with breakouts, though I have the resources and an exeprt right next door. Maybe for those 5th garders we were talking about to start. #games4ed
a4 I'd like to try stations with my 5th graders (Gifted pullout) . Admin has said I should teach 3 days of ELA and 2 days of Math. ..I haven't done stations since I taught kk a long time ago. Any suggestions? #games4ed
Are you designing your own @breakoutEDU or using the Pre-made ones? The day we get back from Winter Break my Ss are doing a digital breakout on figurative language #games4ed

RE: the Breakout boxes... if you do digital or physical, triple check the lock combos! I had a group pulling out their hair on the self-paced digital Breakout because I misspelled a code... #games4ed
I am looking at @classcraftgame too! :) I wear a lot of hats in my small district, so having time to manage my class game is not easy. This makes it look easy. #games4ed

Ditto!!! I think overall, I need to teach more executive function. I love that three students have chosen avoiding procrastination as one of the writing goals, (because that's why their research papers were subpar--lack of self-discipline to just do it) #games4ed
A1: My greatest struggle this year was combining 2 kindergarten classes together and co-teaching without much preparation due to Hurricane Florence #games4ed
Oh, I love stations. Is it for a particular unit or theme? I do a lot of stations work around the reading quests my Ss are engaged in at the time #games4ed

Thank you @mpilakow - if Santa brings you 5-Minute Dungeon, let me know what you think! It's a great "gateway game" for those who do not love board/card games too! #games4ed
I have no idea how this chat went by so quickly, but so it did.
Thanks for another amazing 30 minutes of #games4ed!! And may you all have a wonderful holiday break!!
Thank you all for a wonderful chat year. I hope you all get some well deserved rest and enjoy their break. If you celebrate, "May your table be filled with laughter and great company". See you all next year. #games4ed
That's exactly the reason why I use @classcraftgame. Takes care of the points so easily. Granted it has just the one "theme" but I've used other themes for units and still used the point system. Plus, my Ss LOVE random events! #games4ed

I am brand loyal to @classcraftgame so I have to say that it is easy to use and sync with my Google Classroom. Plus, my gamer Ss practically run things for me in the platform #games4ed

Hi there John! We meet Thursdays at 8pmET. We'll take some time off for the holidays and return on January 10 :) Would love for you to join us! #games4ed
I teach 8th grade. Each quest is different and some are choose your own adventure where others require Ss to complete a specific path and show me they can meet learning targets. I design quests myself. DM for examples #games4ed
It has been a five year work in progress and it is always evolving. Think of what you are already doing with Ss and how you can make it more independent or CYOA so they can show you their understanding. Streamline it with a storyline & theme #games4ed
