and have great Ed tech ideas
A1: Links from Twitter and some Facebook pages yield excellent PD resources
A1 learned a lot at last year's in RI
A1: Collaboration w/peers. EdTech can be utilized in so many different capacities. Learn best by doing and exploring!
A2: Some reimbursement to attend conferences Learn more off-site than on-site
Thanks. I'll check that one out.
A2: teacher choice in PD options for different levels of experience with teachers leading PD sessions
Excellent point! I use Twitter quite a bit!
Yes, today to stay ahead of the curve, self-directed learning is critical
A2: We ask for teacher feedback, reflect and provide them with multiple options to meet their needs. UDL in practice!
Hi All - Julie Henderson from P.K. Yonge at University of Flordia
A2: We encourage ourselves to attend and participate in conferences, so that we can then share it https://t.co/Jj5XkM9ZCQ
Q2 In what ways does your org. facilitate professional learning, sharing, and collaboration on ?
A2 Once we month we offer a collab Wed that teachers can use to learn, share, and collaborate around various topics
A2: we had an edcamp in the past..my fave resource is who runs classes on edtech in our district & supports all Ts!
A2 provides a daily PLC period for Ts to collaborate, 1day/wk is devoted to training, sharing practices
Do you find that others' curiosity about new tools drives your own exploration?
Our district is using as our LMS, and our T's are learning I use that as a collaborative space.
A2: We constantly ask questions to identify areas for improvement. If no one asks questions, the status quo gets entrenched
A2 we encourage people to go on social media to learn as well as open door sessions
A2: summer project development grants, embedded coaches, internal presentations/round table events
A2) UDL facilitators like ! Monthly Tech Workshops, online resources in our LMS, and YouTube!
A2: District encourages attendance, but we have to provide our own funding. Allows us to try cool new things, helps reflect.
A2. Options are very important. We are planning on doing an ed-camp style faculty meeting
https://t.co/lHNHytiYxe great way to learn about a PL network that focuses on designing flexible learning environments!
A1:Twitter is my go to source for PD. It is immediate and effective.
a2 we do a lot of centers based learning which gives a lot in short periods
Systems need to create environments where teachers can self-direct and design their own PD experience.
A2 tech integration specialists work sidebyside w/ Ts to move modify and redefine instruction
Yes, Twitter is amazing for PD. Now to get other educators to understand that!
A2: We meet weekly as a staff & use protocols to share ideas, resources, and learning
BCPS hosts conference style summer Institutes. Focus on tech + pedagogy. Ts pick sessions based on needs & interests
absolutely! I am not an expert at anything- I love learning/experiencing with my teachers
A2 District tech workshops, in-house UDL PD offered monthly, PLC's, and a lot of sharing through Google and
First day I met you. You reminded me of what magic can happen in a classroom This happened at EdCamp!
A2: BCPS hosts conference style summer Institutes. Focus on tech + pedagogy. Ts pick sessions based on needs & interests
A2. Brown bag sand box show and tell!
A2: Options are important, but pacing is paramount. Too much too soon can lead to
A2. form regional cohorts to create relationships and share best practices. Micro-credentials and badging are also motivating
A2- Get feedback from tech teams which have 2 reps from each school
A2: F2F opportunities based on interest/skill level. Defining purpose for tech integration Leveraging LMS for Personalized PD
A2: I wish all schools could give us 20% of our time to work on our own projects/PD (kind of like Google does)
A2 we use Google Drive to share all notes, tips, how to slides for Ts to refer back, enabling them to empower Ss
A2: Sadly I must say they are way behind in the use of edtech tools for Pd.They need all to participate in Twitter chats like
A1: With tech at our fingertips and global connections, PD really needs to be more self-directed instead of en masse on site
Tell us more about the summer project development grants - certain focus areas?
Makes me thing of Vygotsky and rubber bands. Stretching too fast can't break, not enough = no stretch (learning)
A2: Offering 1:1 support after tech PD helps as well.
That time for innovation also helps keep you invigorated!
Kind of like Genius Hour . https://t.co/DNjcbSn9UR
A2: I wish all schools could give us 20% of our time to work on our own projects/PD (kind of like Google does)
A2: At the school level- tech tip Tuesdays, "appy" hour, school based edcamps, personalized planning days
wouldn't that be the BEST! https://t.co/t6ewtpkPpv
A2: I wish all schools could give us 20% of our time to work on our own projects/PD (kind of like Google does)
Not just Twitter, but even other ed tech tools for PD instead of everyone in one school sitting together for PD
A2 (cont.) Having a healthy balance of "how to" and "why to" for tech integration is key.
Continuous is key! Starts w summer institute; continues all year long with Ts, coaches, and admins. https://t.co/TT1nNeysrZ
Q3 coming up in 1 minute…
A2: At the district level- monthly meetings, learning walks, edmodo groups
A2 we host summer boot camps for teachers and students to practice using tools they can use in classroom
Agreed. Google Hangouts and periscope are perfect tools.
We do this model at my school program - it is a lifesaver for us! Our time is flexible & shows we are valued
Q3 What recommendations would you give your org to improve its systems for professional learning on ?
A2: Learning walks, UDL Rounds... whatever we use, a protocol is a must.
Yes, Google Hangouts is going down in Sept so need to migrate to YouTube Live & other apps
And some are just downright reluctant to use them.
Definitely...and starting with the end in mind, "why to" is critical https://t.co/bp4wHtP6h7
A2 (cont.) Having a healthy balance of "how to" and "why to" for tech integration is key.
We have a building of about 50 Ts. We are currently in the planning phase, but small groups work well
is now trending in USA, ranking 50
Okay, so you just made all of us super envious :) High-fives all around to your administrators! https://t.co/dyrZQGrWSu
We do this model at my school program - it is a lifesaver for us! Our time is flexible & shows we are valued
A3: Increased use of collaborative apps such as Google Apps, Twitter, discipline-specific online seminars
a3 personalize the PD to the user. It is way more effective
Universal Design for Learning=framework that provides T's a proactive approach to removing barriers.
I think that its a confidence issue. They don't want to look foolish, but in reality its empowering
A2 Differentiated instruction - just like students! Collaboration - Google Drive for everything
A3: Modeling for teachers that goes beyond 1 time PD sessions
it's a school which helps a LOT - so we high-five each other a lot ;)
A3: As Simon Sinek says "Begin with the Why?" https://t.co/uOFq9eUD38 Ts are motivated if they know why we need tech
A3: Bring Ss to the table to tell you what is lame, what is compelling, and even advise you of new tech. Hear their voice!
Avoid shiny new object syndrome, focus on content and pedagogy 1st https://t.co/F3jEsaFT4U
Q3 What recommendations would you give your org to improve its systems for professional learning on ?
A3- Access. Try to meet the needs of all your teachers. Videos, guides, personal sessions, digital sessions
UDL is not about tech, but PL ABOUT tech must be flexible & MODEL the flexibility & responsiveness that we want in schools.
UDL is one of the approaches we include in our Curriculum & Instruction courses
A3: Move away from your traditional "sit and get PD" to more of a competency based approach with Micro-credentials/badges.
A3Firstly I would tell my Division to pay attention to what is happening on educhats on Twitter for effective ideas
A3 I'd like to see use move from reactive PL (compliance) to proactive PL that meets the needs of tchrs
Yes keep up with what is working
A3. Utilize the talent you have in house to develop high quality PD and different tracks for different abilities / interests
A3: a teacher's most popular request-MORE TIME. it's hard to implement new tech w/o time & training to see where it can fit
A3: Teachers are highly variable. Options. Options. Options.
Precisely and well-stated
Important to remember that shiny does not always equal equitable access and/or increased achievement https://t.co/t1O1disTkh
Avoid shiny new object syndrome, focus on content and pedagogy 1st https://t.co/F3jEsaFT4U
Q3 What recommendations would you give your org to improve its systems for professional learning on ?
A3 Create PLNs based on skill set levels. Empower employees as leaders & mentors themselves
Agreed! So annoyed by so much "fluff" out there that distracts. SQUIRREL! (and then time is wasted) https://t.co/YfpM3e7m2x
Avoid shiny new object syndrome, focus on content and pedagogy 1st https://t.co/F3jEsaFT4U
Q3 What recommendations would you give your org to improve its systems for professional learning on ?
A3: we have a great system in our district. I wish we would utilize each other more, we can learn so much! Collaboration!
They need to show leadership and lead .
A3 Moving things off the plate to make time in the work day for professional learning
And its not about the tool, but how the tool is used that makes the difference
A3) Proud of my district for implementing tech teams & keeping UDL at the center. All I can say is more!
And do so in a way that doesn't shame or condescend towards the non-tech-savvy https://t.co/Z3ptz21spq
A3- Access. Try to meet the needs of all your teachers. Videos, guides, personal sessions, digital sessions
A3: Include students in the learning processes, as participants & lead learners. Do not limit with confines of only T goals.
A3:Building a common language for EdTech is important! Thankful our district worked hard last year w/Tech Integration Matrix.
A3. Allow teachers to experience and discover why the tool is important for their classroom.
A3 we need to be better at keeping the learning in our daily PLC focused on our 5 anchor strategies https://t.co/OgDzZNJX8S
Wonder... If PD was personalized maybe teaching in the classroom would be more personalized?Lead by example
Undecided on badging.Haven't heard good enough argument to persuade me they aren't just grown-up Scouting badges...
Good point. Time to relax, explore, apply, & reflect critical to ongoing PD
speaking of "shiny new objects" - let's be realistic about digital books, and not technodazzled. https://t.co/caLBtKXkKH
modeling is needed in every level and practice helps with implementation
Now if only more districts used that approach!
Sure In small districts like mine many believe that only those in large districts have those talents https://t.co/OLJzhICZiP
A3. Utilize the talent you have in house to develop high quality PD and different tracks for different abilities / interests
A3: Use "guerilla tactics" = focus on teacher concerns struggles & tech follows naturally. Solve problems of practice w/tech
A3: Partnering tech-comfortable teachers with their tech uncomfortable peers to offer in-house supports.
A3. Options are great, but sometimes less is more. We don't need redundancy in our tools. Program/product evaluation is key.
A3 make sure training is responsive to T need, and is connected to measurable goals in classroom
A3Need to implement Genius Hour for teachers.
Q4 coming up in 1 minute…
A3. Has your district considered badging? This is a great way to show what you already know and not waste valuable PD time
A3: after a whole group/small group tech session, my Ts can sign up to have me model tech with instruction for their class
A3: Demonstrate that there isn't only one way & remember that we are ALL learning. Always. Model.
A3: To improve PD for Ed Tech, districts need to involve students to get a grip on their approaches, interests , & assistance
"Make sure training is responsive to T need, and is connected to measurable goals in classroom" ~
A4: has provided many opportunities for ed tech leaders to network and learn from each other.
Not so! The best talent comes from passionate educators who want to impact learning
Start presenting noon hour pd like ignite talks to stir up interests
And it is for those two reasons why I am VERY leery of the process...
We also need to point out that we need to teach that knowing when not to use tech is as important as using tech
A4: Partnerships beyond the walls of the institutions open our eyes to best practices & inhibit myopia
Love this idea! Students, teachers, and admins should all engage. Become expert learners *together*. https://t.co/HKHPxVnkJV
A3Need to implement Genius Hour for teachers.
Anythg stopping yu frm this?
badging is on "too learn more" about this fall list.
Q4 How do partnerships with other organizations improve your professional learning experience? https://t.co/HaEtqN6jo2
A4: Everyone has a different way to share information. I love the different and unique approaches. Keeps my stuff fresh, too!
That's great! I am in the process of doing the same thing! Let me know if you find anything good
Hi Janet, and just realized you're here on Always good to reconnect with you
A4 Industry collaboration provides real world relevance to training and instructional design.
A4: Because experience from others is HOW I learn professionally. We all didn't invent original wheels :)
A4 Partnerships with other organizations helps bring in other perspectives that the district may not have thought of
A4: Bring others into PLNs - participate in global networks ... Twitter chats
Good point. How many schools are creating advisory committees w/ local business leaders? We do this and its great!
A4 - Technology is constantly changing and improving so it's important to keep up! Everyone needs help.
A4: sometime local "experts" are prophets in their own land - new faces, new perspectives, new ways of approaching PD
Together we are better! Power in sharing sharing resources & best practices!
A4: Our own discipline-specific organizations as well as are other ways to move us beyond our own institutions.
A4 allows Ts to see outside our bubble and reminds us we are not unique with our struggles.
A4: Partnering with local business leaders has helped and in HISD improve PL experiences
A4 I work with a bunch of schools on all sorts of tools
A4: working with other orgs helps bring in new perspectives and ideas. I love seeing what different systems are doing
A4. Sometimes you are blind to what's happening w/in your own walls. Seeing other perspectives and views enhance our product
A4: Collaboration creates stronger systems. Partnerships challenge us to think differently.
A4 You can't know what you don't know about what innovators are doing -- both orgs and individuals
A3: just like we seek to provide equitable opp for Ss, Ts need equitable opp for their PD needs
A4: Networking with other about UDL has given me many opps to share & receive get resources.
A4: It's easy to operate in a silo, insulated from others - but then you're never opened up to better ways of doing things!
Connections w/ business leader & those outside education field can help us prepare students for their future
I am trying to work with major employer in our area to come and show ss what they do.
A4 sometimes an outsider can do what a colleague can't since they leave at end of day.
A4 Sometimes industry collaboration can provide free or sponsored PD. Been there done that :)
A4 Wld suggest that Twitter offers tools and ready community to learn together
A3: Many professional organizations make resources available to individuals with few and provide new connection venues.
A4 - We use a business advisory group to learn about critical gaps that need developed.
Plus, this keeps you on the radar in the community! Can lead to great press and more support https://t.co/sYxXhy5Osm
A4: Partnering with local business leaders has helped and in HISD improve PL experiences
A4: Exposure, exposure, exposure - learn from others
Agree, so critical to move beyond walls of our own institution to develop a wider PD experience
I totally agree! It really comes down to your goals for the product.
Hi. Never sure when I can make this awesome chat
I was lucky enough to co-teach a class on how to operate a major local company
Yes. It is a great place to start. https://t.co/F4yjtlvRgg
A4 Wld suggest that Twitter offers tools and ready community to learn together
I hate it when incompetence masquerades and conspiracy
A4: partnerships can give a good dose of humility - we see others do things better -good motivation to do more and better
nicely said. One step at time
A4 we make sure send Ts to regional, state workshops to share our best practices, building pride in what we are doing.
A4: partnerships are everything! The cohorts/teams I've been involved in are always just a text or email away. Life savers!
Yes, but so many educators have yet to understand how to explore & use Twitter for learning & PD
A4: Building relationships is a key component in learning.
A4. If we are preparing Ss for the future, why not see how businesses are preparing for the future?
https://t.co/Ecmsf2tWs9
A4: Because experience from others is HOW I learn professionally. We all didn't invent original wheels :)
Partnerships support the timely exchange of information often resulting in effective needs analysis
On the other hand, w/ school districts blocking Twitter, it is hard for some educators to see the value
Yes That is what we teach ss and Ts need to work at this. https://t.co/Sk41zwn1wa
A4: Building relationships is a key component in learning.
Not the workshops that will get ppl going but the relationships to support comfort an risk
A4 Developing relationships with other schools and powerhouses like and trading expertise is critical.
So much wisdom here. They are on the bleeding edge, in education we should be too https://t.co/1i8zp9mZ0G
A4. If we are preparing Ss for the future, why not see how businesses are preparing for the future?
Q5 coming up in 1 minute…
I've planned field trips between Ts in neighboring school systems w/good results
Not only businesses but people in all walks of life. Few of our students will become teachers.
A4. Sometimes we look for how the partnership can value us, but how can u or your Ss add value to others in the partnership?
A4: I've planned field trips between Ts in neighboring school systems w/good results
Maybe we shld be asking for reasons why. Trust w/ a plan of action. Pilots wrk that way.
freelance instructional designers such are chomping at the bit to help! send out a RFP and we will fill you with aawe
A4: Partnerships and relationships within district are essential. Curriculum & Tech make a STRONG team! Play to strengths
Businesses and politicians like our PM Justin Trudeau know this. https://t.co/XlvDdCNAhj
A4. If we are preparing Ss for the future, why not see how businesses are preparing for the future?
A3: set very specific limits on how certain funds can be used (based on teacher feedback) and focus on optimizing support.
A5: Books with QR codes can put educators in immediate access to online resources right at their fingertips
A4: Partnerships model the benefits of collaboration and the value of synthesis & also provide new venues/opps for learning.
A3: Prractice time on tools, purposeful integration, well-trained support
A5: Ask for help. Unless you ask, others don’t know you need help. Also seek those around you that are using tech.
Q5 What resources would you recommend to a colleague to strengthen their capacity to use tech? https://t.co/4ahJbVGZyc
It is an extreme struggle to get some districts to allow access to social media sites like Twitter
A5: Each other! Peer observations are powerful - learn from one another & strengthen team at the same time
A5 - Digital Citizenship is a must to help S's and T's become expert learners with Tech. is the best!
Hard to imagine w/out u and so many others.
A5: A lot of Ts don't know what tools are out there or what trainings to ask for. Tech exploration needs to be goal directed
A5 Never promote tech. Learning shld be goal. Eg brainstorming? Use packet to collect then discuss the ideas not the tool.
Twitter, Edcamps, other colleagues, YouTube, district resources
That is the beauty of Twitter and smartphones. Wish more admin could see this. https://t.co/pTHMfdGqt6
A5: Ask for help. Unless you ask, others don’t know you need help. Also seek those around you that are using tech.
A5: For some, enrolling in grad courses focused on ed tech will give them the concentrated exposure needed
A5: Support & collab opps, patience, respect & encouragement...these of course are traits for successful support period.
And tech is giving Ss the power to collaborate and solve problems w/out the high costs of field trips
A5 centralize a list of credible resources outside the usual publishers
A5 tech help ticket , start with our folks to support you.
Adds to the experience of ss, who get outside exposure to the world big and small around them
A5: and others who push for authentic integration of w/ pedagogy
And connected w/ class curric
This is rooted in a fear-based mentality which will delay progress, innovation, and engagement by Ss. https://t.co/G1LbK4QgRn
It is an extreme struggle to get some districts to allow access to social media sites like Twitter
Thank you for being my biggest fans! I am blushing on the other end of my keyboard.
In addition to Twitter being blocked, many districts ban cell phones. Not a productive approach
A5: Check out 's work on practitioner inquiry - great for capacity building in all areas, including .
A5. Not being afraid to reach out to other educators either in person or face to face
A5 I send out weekly updates and include several "teasers" on to pique interest, then follow up w/ training opport.
Agreed. Love . has great stuff for multiple digcit issues as well. https://t.co/c7z2FMDLbv
A5 - Digital Citizenship is a must to help S's and T's become expert learners with Tech. is the best!
A5: Time, access, support, and a culture where failure does NOT have a negative connotation.
A5: I recommend Twitter with a goal to building a strong PLN to help you.
A5: Students! They're the real expert resource so much of the time!
A5- Don't be afraid to try new things! Many are hesitant, want to be "expert" before using w/S. Play, Explore, & Google it!
A5: Weekly teacher-led lunch & learns - promote teachers!
Sounds good. Does this approach work well for most?
one small step. I say this b/c I never thot we wld ever get there and we have
A5: Edcamps of course. Best and cheapest way to connect with -proficient teachers.
A5: hard to point to resources without learning goal in mind - colleagues=great resource b/c can see real world application
A5. Tools like and are great ways to learn new things w/out the overwhelming pace of Twitter
Agreed! We can't do it alone.
A5: I'd recommend Twitter and Voxer for getting ideas and brainstorming, but not for actually learning how to use stuff.
A5: Constantly talking about successes and learnings from Twitter.
A5: Constantly talking about successes and learnings from Twitter.
A5 - Read UDL in the Cloud by
A5: go slow and start simple. Look at what you already like/have skills in and build from there
A5. We create 1 min screencasts called Tech Tip Tuesdays to share how to do something in small chunks
So good to hear that B.C. is making progress in that direction
A5: I may be biased, but ! Can help Ts evaluate best tool for the job and support its use in the classroom.
YES! They are available, interested, and passionate about tech - get them involved! https://t.co/Tn0tBp9MOl
A5: Students! They're the real expert resource so much of the time!
Good idea. Will try it this year. https://t.co/ywrnO2KwKT
A5: Weekly teacher-led lunch & learns - promote teachers!
A5 always looking at lessons and asking , can take learning to higher DOK or top right R&R quadrant, natural enhance
Q6 coming up in 1 minute…
I love the idea of Tech Tip Tuesdays!
I really like bite-sized stuff like this. I wonder if people have started archiving these? https://t.co/zJYrsqEICL
A5. We create 1 min screencasts called Tech Tip Tuesdays to share how to do something in small chunks
A5: Build your by following all your new friends. :)
A5: Making a few key connections, virtual or real life, is helpful. Find someone better than you and rub elbows (or tweets!)
Another great idea. Wish colleagues could see this. Will share with them. https://t.co/UXG7gzjyEz
A5. We create 1 min screencasts called Tech Tip Tuesdays to share how to do something in small chunks
I love this. People are glad to help out others. I can reach out to you all, you can reach out to me https://t.co/OQqQViYECd
A5. We create 1 min screencasts called Tech Tip Tuesdays to share how to do something in small chunks
A5: YouTube also has some great short tutorials on edtech
A5 Build in opportunities for students to showcase their fav tools and apps then ask, how could you use that here?
Teachers demonstrate not only a tool, but real lesson taught w/ it - collaborate & help those interested in using
Blockg concepts deep, based on fear, accountability. Can't expect 2 address over nite. Small pilot
Absolutely! I also offer the 1st 15, where Ts stop by the 1st 15 min of any class to learn in small groups
Agreed! Ts need to let go and let students show how to use tech for learning. https://t.co/k1qXvZIH4V
YES! They are available, interested, and passionate about tech - get them involved! https://t.co/Tn0tBp9MOl
A5: Students! They're the real expert resource so much of the time!
A5: As far as strengthening capacity, I think a solid understanding of GAFE for collaboration can make a huge difference.
Hi just peeking in for a moment in time.
If you had1 billion dollars every 4 years ,with the population of 318 million, should there be poverty?
A5: For many, a master's program in ed tech creates continuous development needed for successful classroom implementation
A6:Approaching new teachers is a good way to build up that idea.
A5 Most of us have classrooms full of the very best tech resources--our kids! Ask them!
Failure is only failure if ppl remain there. Learning depends on replay
We have created a Google Site Announcement page, which serves as a blog. We also have a channel
A6 - Local colleges or universities. We are working with the city and local business on coding.
