#digitaledchat is a global twitter chat that covers almost everything and anything to do with modern learning, educational technology and learning spaces. Contributors are often from all over the world and new participants are always welcome to take part!
Well yes China is strange in that way everyone has a device for consuming content and they are way ahead with a cashless society, but creativity as we would see it is not encouraged. #digitalEDchat
A2. Advantages are they are fluent in using devices and can adapt easily to the fast paced changes in edtech.
But we shouldn't forget the importance of pen and paper. Balance is key. Not everything is on a digital platform.
#digitalEDchat
A2 edtech is a tool we must always remember that but starting early allows them to take advantage of the possibilities it can bring over what was done #digitaledchat
I really don't see kids being successful online if they don't have the basics of reading and writing mastered. There is clear research linking handwriting to developing skills in spelling, reading and crafting writing - all important in an online world. #digitalEDchat
A2- Edtech has helped me to increase personalisation of content delivery, and the ability to give kids access to communicate ideas that have not have been able to before. Making thinking visible in new ways. UDL #digitaledchat
A3 I guess the obvious one would be the program would need to be flexible so that the technology itself dosen't get outdated by the time they get to High School #DigitalEdChat
I don't see it as an either or, I see it as an 'as well as.' A bit like saying to a child 'you are not old enough to use a pen, stick to the pencil.' #digitaledchat
Hey everyone! Q1: well bc I teach primary all my experience is pre hs. Our kids can access pretty complex tech with appropriate scaffolding & support. Purposeful links to learning essential. #digitalEDchat
A3. Students failing to see the importance of learning skills like handwriting, spelling, using a dictionary or an atlas, library research skills, and more. While we can do many of these using edtech, it's like not knowing how to cook without electricity.
#digitalEDchat
A1 Loads of experience using tech p-6. The younger we start, the better. Sts who use tech earlier in school seem to more easily grasp ‘tech as a tool not a toy’ #digitalEDchat
A2 teaching concepts like respect, safety, character, citizenship are all taught early in schools and this should extend to online spaces from the start. #digitalEDchat
Same with edtech for me. It needs to sit along side all other tools. It's the Learning to Learn that is the most vital part #digitaledchathttps://t.co/21ZRtwW9vJ
I find the way digital citizenship is taught depressing. Tends to be just web safety. That's not being an active citizen #digitalEDchat area of improvement for schools there.
For those of us who remember the despair of allowing students to use calculators... the implementation of edtech as an instead of debate is pretty similar. I worry more about data mining of students #digitaledchat
Starting early is a great way to combat the social side of tech issues that we see. I see a lot of ppl freaking out when we try to teach kids about social media use *by using it* gasp! Ignoring the problem doesn’t make it go away #digitalEDchat
#digitalEDchat yes, you don't need to produce anything to contribute to society. The biggest growing industry is aged care and social support #digitalEDchat
A4. I think the biggest barrier is accessibility.
The second is when everyone is rocking a different device for young kids. You need sameness with devices for young ones.

My one caution with that is that we are expecting immature human beings to behave with maturity at all times... not always going to happen. Social media can be a very destructive tool in the hands of immature teens #digitalEDchat
There is now clear data on the links between social media use and rises in mental health issues in teens. This is different from using digital tools for learning, tho #digitaledchat
#DigitalEDchat A3 - Potential interference with natural growth and development. Critical thinking skills need to be allowed to grow by more questions rather than let Ed tech provide quick answers.

A5. Edtech is about answering the needs of the learner with edtech tools that underpin their learning or record their learning or reflects their learning to create deeper learners in the long run. #digitalEDchat
There are two different aspects to consider so would need different approaches: 1. Use of edtech tools for creating & 2. Use of social media. #digitalEDchat
A4 safe spaces where young sts can participate without being exposed to things they should be safe from. Still difficult to manage image searches esp #digitalEDchat
#DigitalEdChat A1- School's local setting plays a big role in quality and quantity of Ed tech in young teens. Derived misconceptions and assumptions could hamper future efforts to help them unlearn things.
A5 i’m not sure the focus needs to be any different to older kids. EdTech needs to enhance and extend learning and not be a target in and of itself. #digitalEDchat
We human beings are naturally flawed and we tend to do silly stuff, young impulsive brains more so. The trouble with social media is that content travels far and wide, so one thoughtless act can have HUGE ripples. Never happened before in human history #digitalEDchat
A2- #DigitalEdChat Done right with focus on problem solving skills using Ed tech as a big but not only support system, much can be achieved and aligned. Kids grow up appreciating tech more imo.
Ugh screen time. Not all screen time is created equal. Parents need educating about consuming vs creating and the different aspects of collaboration and real life problem solving that occur in purposefully designed learning ‘screen time’ #digitaledchat
I couldn't agree more! Whose doing the educating on this? Whose role is it? My focus this year is on parents involvement in stem, tech, digital, etc as there's so much confusion and angst out there. #digitaledchat
I don’t think we are expecting kids to act with maturity at all times, that would be tough. We are teaching habits. I want my sts to learn how to filter for themselves, rather than be filtered by me #DigitalEDchat
However I do recognise that for teens esp, they are physiologically more impulsive etc this is so tough. We can’t take it away though, so we have to educate. #digitalEDchat
A6. At the very least parents should be informed their child is using edtech in their learning and have given appropriate consents. Better would be parents actively engaging with their children on how they use edtech in their learning.
#digitalEDchat
A6 I'd love to see parents take a nuanced approach to tech, which takes information + time + balance instead of the head in the sand approach. Oh, and mothers to be positive role models, especially for daughters - show a growth mindset! #digitaledchat
Social pressure 4teens is huge, & the world we see from a teacher's perspective is but the tip of the iceberg of their social world. I'd like to think we can empower them to rise above it. Statistics don't show this at the moment https://t.co/uYUgSnPwBS#digitaledchat
Thanks for that chat ladies and gentlemen enjoy the rest of your Monday evening #digitalEDchat Harry Potter Go will be the next big AR thing you heard it here first.
tech is often demonised. It’s part of the ‘whichever way you parent you’re doing it wrong’ culture. And it’s become shorthand for judging parenting as slack and disengaged. Also part of the time immemorial ‘kids these days’ trope. #digitalEDchat
#digitaledchat just started using @sketchnation and thru the classroom app I could see that EVERY child stayed on the app for the full hour. Creating a game so was sooooo engaging!
