  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:39 PM EST
#RuralEdChat ** Q1: ** What type of evaluation system does your school/district use?
  • kingintheclass Nov 7 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: As a pre-service educator, unsure of the evaluation system in placement district & just coming to understand OTES for state #RuralEdChat
  • MrsAdneyCHS Nov 7 @ 8:42 PM EST
TLE Teacher & Leader Effectiveness. OKTLE for Oklahoma. #ruraledchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1: My district uses the Danielson model. My previous one used Marzano. #RuralEdChat
  • MrCramer7 Nov 7 @ 8:43 PM EST
A1: As a pre-service teacher, I do not have one but we are learning about the Danielsons Framework and I know that it is used for teacher evaluation. #RuralEdChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:44 PM EST
There are many different models for evaluation. Being familiar with some may be a good thing before you interview for permanent position. #RuralEdChat

  • j6panus Nov 7 @ 8:45 PM EST
A1: it has a name (some person).. but it’s been under contention, union issue - tried to tie to raises. 😕 I call it painful. #ruraledchat
  • kingintheclass Nov 7 @ 8:46 PM EST
I definitely see the importance of it, especially as I will be looking for jobs across many states. #ruraledchat

#ruraledchat seems that what works for Ts is not what works for admin..?
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:48 PM EST
It raises the question the purpose of the evaluation. Is it to support teacher growth or to keep from providing raises. #RuralEdChat
    In reply to @j6panus
  • j6panus Nov 7 @ 8:49 PM EST
#RuralEdChat Danielson is what they want to use. Not sure what is used.

  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:50 PM EST
#RuralEdChat **Q2:** What are the differences between teacher evaluations and administrative evaluations? (Do you even know what Admin Evals look like?)
  • j6panus Nov 7 @ 8:50 PM EST
Yes! So frustrating. And some over the years just look for fault. #RuralEdChat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:51 PM EST
A2: I honestly have never seen an Admin evaluation. Wouldn't know what one looks like. But would love to compare the two. #RuralEdChat
  • MrCramer7 Nov 7 @ 8:51 PM EST
A2: I have never seen one or learned about one that I can recall here at school. #RuralEdChat
  • j6panus Nov 7 @ 8:51 PM EST
#RuralEdChat had no idea an admin eval existed.

A2: I think I am with others in saying I did not even know admin. evaluations were a thing! #RuralEdChat
  • MrCramer7 Nov 7 @ 8:54 PM EST
I think it is a great way to evaluate. It is a very detailed framework. I think it supports teacher growth and student learning. #RuralEdChat

  • MrsAdneyCHS Nov 7 @ 8:54 PM EST
A2: I can't say I have ever seen an admin eval. I do know that the same eval is not appropriate for every T. Most of the Qs on the eval don't apply to me. #ruraledchat

#RuralEdChat **Q3:** There are more than job evaluations in education. What type of evaluations can teachers use with their students to drive classroom instruction?

    #RuralEdChat The well-placed, well-designed question. :)

  • MrCramer7 Nov 7 @ 9:00 PM EST
Just got done chatting about FA on another chat. I think FA is an evaluation of student learning and understanding. In terms of behavior management, you could evaluate behavior progress with students who have trouble. #RuralEdChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:00 PM EST
    Excellent example. #RuralEdChat
    • ed_larose Nov 7 @ 9:00 PM EST
Big fan of the ole turn and talk, provides an opportunity for all student voices. May take some classroom management and time to get the routine, but effective when set up properly.

  • MisforMidwest Nov 7 @ 9:01 PM EST
Self-evaluation from students helped me to know them better and see how they were interacting with content. Both written and verbal. #ruraledchat
  • MrsAdneyCHS Nov 7 @ 9:02 PM EST
A3: My evals are for secondary transition. I give interest inventories, career questionnaires, self-determination scales, etc. #ruraledchat
  • j6panus Nov 7 @ 9:03 PM EST
#ruraledchat A3: rubrics, student self-eval, and conversations with Ss. Ss reflection.

#RuralEdChat **Q3:** There are more than job evaluations in education. What type of evaluations can teachers use with their students to drive classroom instruction?
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:03 PM EST
A3: There are so many types of both formative and summative evaluations. I honestly didn't understand the difference until a few years ago. #RuralEdChat
  • SJ_Grubb Nov 7 @ 9:04 PM EST
A3) I also ask Ss@how they are progressing toward course goals. In 2/3 of my classes, course goals were co-created w/ Ss. #RuralEdChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:05 PM EST
When I first started teaching, I'll admit evaluations were all graded and not truly about student learning. They were more about proof I'd covered the material. I'm better now. #RuralEdChat

#RuralEdChat **Q4:** What style/type of evaluation has most effectively driven YOUR practice in new directions?
  • kingintheclass Nov 7 @ 9:10 PM EST
A4: There is nothing better than the quick check for understanding. Simple and quick and big implications for teaching #RuralEdChat
  • j6panus Nov 7 @ 9:11 PM EST
#ruraledchat A4: student feed back, research into my interests and PLN. And the search for rationale for my school to return my jon to full time!
  • try_rebooting Nov 7 @ 9:11 PM EST
A4 formative assessment! Mostly, just how small, rapid, and regular can i make it. Designed into class as much as possible #RuralEdChat
  • SJ_Grubb Nov 7 @ 9:11 PM EST
#RuralEdChat Feedback--face-to-face and 1-1 from mentors and Ss. When my mentor would say, "I wonder..." I knew I was about to grow! 🌻
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:12 PM EST
A4: My most influential evaluation was one where I was asked my opinion BEFORE it was finalized. Having input to my strengths/weaknesses helped me realize where I needed growth. #RuralEdChat
  • SJ_Grubb Nov 7 @ 9:12 PM EST
Q4) So, I work to have an authentic connection with my Ss through e-journals. #RuralEdChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:13 PM EST
    THIS!!!!! #RuralEdChat
    • MisforMidwest Nov 7 @ 9:12 PM EST
Not really a style/type of evaluation... but learning to be easier on myself and less of a perfectionist was KEY to enjoying my journey as a teacher! Ha. I wasn't doing my students any favors by being stressed out all the time.
  • try_rebooting Nov 7 @ 9:13 PM EST
A4 for being evaluated, just being questioned - im decent at getting places myself, if i get help getting pointed in the right direction #RuralEdChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:14 PM EST
    Good point to remember. #RuralEdChat
    • kingintheclass Nov 7 @ 9:13 PM EST
Always good for students too. Student choice is good for engraftment!
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:15 PM EST
Sometimes the conversation creates a question. That's what's happened with our next question. It will be here just as soon as I can get it typed. #RuralEdChat
  • try_rebooting Nov 7 @ 9:17 PM EST
For the in service Ts out there - are evals by your admin as stressful/distracting as they seem like they'd be? #RuralEdChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:17 PM EST
#RuralEdChat ** Q5 ** How do our job evaluations compare to the evaluations we give our students? Should they be comparable? Why or why not?
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:19 PM EST
Great question. It really depends upon how an administrator views evaluations. Growth minded aren't difficult. Punitive mindset makes them harder to handle. #RuralEdChat
    In reply to @try_rebooting
  • SJ_Grubb Nov 7 @ 9:19 PM EST
Depends who is doing the eval! #RuralEdChat
    In reply to @try_rebooting
  • MrCramer7 Nov 7 @ 9:19 PM EST
A5: I think that as teachers we are constantly learning as well. In that sense it is comparable because we are evaluating learning and understanding. #RuralEdChat
  • kingintheclass Nov 7 @ 9:20 PM EST
A5: All evals are important because the underlying purpose is constant reflection and growth. Important for Ts and Ss #RuralEdChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:21 PM EST
A5: I may just experiment with this. I wonder how my Ss would handle a Job Performance Review instead of a test. #RuralEdChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:22 PM EST
    #RuralEdChat
    • SJ_Grubb Nov 7 @ 9:21 PM EST
A5) Relevance is key. T eval (based on standard rubric designed to separate) not as obj as it appears. Depends on meaningfulness of eval.
  • try_rebooting Nov 7 @ 9:23 PM EST
Very similar to the style of working with a "difficult" student. Lead with "How do you think you're doing in class?" #RuralEdChat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:24 PM EST
In the 26+ years, some admin have had growth mindset, others not so much. I've even had some that shifted from one year to the next. #RuralEdChat
    • try_rebooting Nov 7 @ 9:22 PM EST
Do you still have a lot of evals that come in both categories?
      In reply to @TG_Neil
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:25 PM EST
I can't leave the next question unasked. Here comes question six. #RuralEdChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:25 PM EST
#RuralEdChat **Q6** If you could create an evaluation system, what would it include? Why?
  • try_rebooting Nov 7 @ 9:28 PM EST
A6 Id be sure to include questions for self reflection and asking for specifics. Two of my favorites from my non-edu evals I get with my bosses #RuralEdChat
  • SJ_Grubb Nov 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
#RuralEdChat In a utopia, we wouldn't need them because of continuous feedback loops... that's a sticky question.
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Nov 7 @ 9:29 PM EST
A6: I would make it a year long process that included a conversation at the beginning to determine what my admin and I thought I needed to work on. Set goals to meet. #RuralEdChat
  • kingintheclass Nov 7 @ 9:30 PM EST
    A6: Student engagement, reflection, T & S growth, realization of purpose #RuralEdChat
