A1: Not everyone learns the same. If we really want equity in education, then we need to provide students with what they need to succeed. That’s going to look different for different kids. #edutopiachat

A1: Differentiation is the closest thing we have to a silver bullet in education. Each kid is unique, so why would we think a factory model approach to learning with work? We need to differentiate to meet the different needs! #edutopiachat
A1 All students (all people, for that matter) need differentiation b/c we are all different in how we learn -- and what we want to learn too #edutopiachat
A1 Differentaition is not only important, it is requisite. It provides equal access and opportunity for every student. Differentiation proves to kids that their teacher is on their side- emotionally and academically. #edutopiachat
A1: Differentiation sets each unique individual for success. It gives all of us the opportunities to grow from where we are at the moment. #edutopiachat
A1. Yes! I was just thinking about how important it is to go beyond differentiation to thinking about UDL - really designing with all possibilities in mind & allowing Ss choice to opt into what will work in that moment #edutopiachat

A1: Education is not a “one size fits all” process. Each Ss must be met from their individual starting place using the strategies that best accommodate their learning. 😍#edutopiachat
A1. Supporting learning is duty/obligation/purpose. In order 4 all learners 2 learn, we must make responsive responses. It is compassionate pedagogy. #edutopiachat
A1 - I find choice-based learning (branched quests and learning pathways), combined with playful experiences, attention to UDL principles, and approaches like Genius Hour are wonderful for differentiation #edutopiachat
A1: At its core, deep learning is an individualized pursuit. Learner must see the value of the learning exercise and be able to personalize the results. #edutopiachat
A1: Because last I checked our Ss are not all cut from the same cloth. If we don’t allow them to express themselves in their own unique ways we are encouraging flat thinking. #edutopiachat
A1: Differentiation is essential to student learning because not all of our students are the same. This means we must make learning equitable for all #edutopiachat

A1: Love the idea that "learning is fixed; time is variable." Students arrive at the learning at different times with different levels of mastery. And all of that is OK. #edutopiachat
So often overlooked because they already know I️t, differentiation provides our gifted students an opportunity to stretch and develop depth of knowledge #edutopiachat
That is such an important point about the emotional element. It reminds me of an amazing book for teachers and parents https://t.co/4kNSfykRey#edutopiachat A must read for all.

A2 I use a Google survey with all types of questions - except academic, to gather information about Ss interest, history, ability, learning style #edutopiachat
A2 proud of our teachers who work together to develop common assessments to measure student levels of understanding prior to introducing new material #edutopiachat
A1 Differentiation is impt for helping provide a learning experience that caters to the individual S. It helps students navigate the learning process in a way that meets the S where they are at regardless of background, ability level, & other personal circumstances. #edutopiachat
A2 - LMS tools like Google Classroom to give students partially completed rubrics, having them complete. I also codesign lessons with students. I allow/encourage students to pivot in PBL based on their interests #stuchoice#edutopiachat
A2: An easy way is just to ask them what their learning preference is, what they feel they are good at, and where they need so help. After that a research-based diagnostic helps too, lol. #edutopiachat
A2: Using reflection activities is a great way for Ss to express where they are on the learning path. Metacognition such an essential part of assessment. Ss own their learning. #edutopiachat
A2: Many teachers don’t realize that they’re already “doing” differentiation; already adapting for students. The trick is making it more systematic. Lots of tools for that: https://t.co/VBsoxsjDeb. #edutopiachat

A2: All of my assessments are open. In my gamified approach I present a problem in the form of a story than a goal but no path. Allows for interpretation, creativity & individuality. I always get such cool things! #edutopiachat
I think that's where the most fulfilling instructional moments come from--1:1 conferences. And it only takes a minute to learn tons about an individual student--just by being curious about who they are!
A2: For student interests and check ins, "Whip Arounds." They quickly respond to a low risk question and always have an option to pass. Students love it & it can easily be modified. It is energizing too! #edutopiachat
A2: As a student teacher it is hard to say what works but best but I really love looking at student's journal pages. These are informal assessments where students show a lot of their learning, as well as their confusions #edutopiachat
A2. The immediate feedback from digital assessment (like @edulastic) can help teachers quickly analyze what level a student is at and where to differentiate the learning. #edutopiachat#edtech
A2: Ss must be part of assessment process. The ability to articulate one's learning is an important skill in future. Self-efficacy endures a lifelong learner. #edutopiachat
Grading re-dos for my assignments. While it takes extra time to allow students to re-do their papers and re-grade them, it's worth it when I see students figure something out and grow in their abilities. They wouldn't do that if they just got the bad grade.
A2 In order for teachers to assess and for students to progress, kids needs to be DISCUSSING and WRITING all the time. In whole groups, small groups, and one-on-one conversations with their teachers. #edutopiachat
A2: Casual conversations with students, student-chosen performances task often reveals thier interests, strengths and areas that need work on. #edutopiachat
A2: My favorite assessment strategy is to think deeply about 5 students before class starts, and go into class with the intention of asking and figuring out something that interests or puzzles me about those individuals. #edutopiachat
A2: Ongoing, informal, quick checks for understanding of content, verbal and in writing, student led Socratic Seminars, surveys for reading and personal interests. #edutopiachat

Join in! Here's the first Q:
A3: Try to make sure that I'm making space for at least 3 modalities & I'm always open to suggestions for other ways to demonstrate their learning. #edutopiachat
A3: Rather than giving my students a list of vocabulary words to learn, they choose their own words from the context of their reading. Students generate lists where they break down context clues and work toward their own applications of the words. #edutopiachat
A3: With older kids you can present the success criteria to them and then leave it up to each student to choose how they will meet that success criteria. #edutopiachat
edutopia: RT finleyt: A2: My favorite assessment strategy is to think deeply about 5 students before class starts, and go into class with the intention of asking and figuring out something that interests or puzzles me about those individuals. #edutopiachat

RT edutopia "RT finleyt: A2: My favorite assessment strategy is to think deeply about 5 students before class starts, and go into class with the intention of asking and figuring out something that interests or puzzles me about those individuals. #edutopiachat"
A3 Using choice-based learning with quests in tools like @classcraftgame, as well as through Genius Hour. I did this in middle school, and now in Teacher Ed, showing preservice teachers how to apply self-determination theory thru agency, competence, belongingness #edutopiachat
A3 choice of topic and method of delivery for assessment, for content delivery choose from group, individual, follow along or jump to the end - these are 11 & 12 graders they know what they need at this point #edutopiachat
A3. My Class Is Full Of Choice!! Choice Seating, Interest Reading During DEAR, Choices In Literacy And Math Centers, Etc! The Inly Time There Isnt Choice Is During Whole Group #edutopiachat
A3: Giving students choices can be as simple as allowing them alternate seating, and as complex as giving them different options of ways to assess their knowledge instead of a standard test #edutopiachat

A3. My Class Is Full Of Choice!! Choice Seating, Interest Reading During DEAR, Choices In Literacy And Math Centers, Etc! The Only Time There Isnt Choice Is During Whole Group #edutopiachat
Nice. Project based, high interest to kids, learning objective based, aligned with standards, all aligned with providing evidence of learning. Easy to fit in formative pieces in the construction of the project. #edutopiachat
By using a variety of teaching methods in my lessons it makes it easy to ensure all students are able to engage in the the learning process. 'the five stage demonstration process' is excellent for this #edutopiachat
A3 Think choice and voice.
Think options and opportunities.
It’s about empowering students to formulate opinions, share ideas, and develop insights. #edutopiachat
A3-Giving content text at different reading levels. Teaching students how to access learning tools: such as text readers, vocabulary learning games, choices in summary projects. #edutopiachat
A3: Genre Translation -- Ss choose one of their essays and translate it into a new genre with a new purpose for a new audience. Ex: a causal analysis of child abuse translated into a children's story about surviving abuse. Ss choose the new audience and new genre. #edutopiachat
A3) Offer 3 options. The Teacher defines 2 choices. The learner can propose a 3rd choice that meets the learning outcome(s) #edutopiachat#SoAllCanLearn

A3 I like to give Ss choice in how they demonstrate understanding. While they are learning a concept, it doesn't matter if they share their learning with me through writing, making a video, having a conversation- as long as they show me they understand, I'm happy! #edutopiachat
A3. Flexible seating options, project menus (with choice of content & platform), Ss can choose to demonstrate proficiency at any time in many ways #edutopiachat
#edutopiachat I believe student input and feedback is VERY IMPORTANT. And the teacher, admin, para-professional have to be comfortable in listening to the feedback to differentiate for student need
If we go back to the roots of DI, we can differentiate content, process, and/or product. Within those three areas are countless possibilities!!! #edutopiachat
A2: #edutopiachat I believe student input and feedback is VERY IMPORTANT. And the teacher, admin, para-professional have to be comfortable in listening to the feedback to differentiate for student need
You don’t change the bar of rigor but HOW they reach it is always negotiable. I have multiple items prepared so if it’s not working I can offer a different way or better yet my Ss ask if they can choose a different way! #edutopiachat

I love flexible seating! I actually prefer to have no desks or tables in my room. Students almost always prefer to work on the floor, leaning against a pillow, writing on a clipboard. #edutopiachat

Google Classroom handles the "paperwork" of personalization. Use Forms and Sheets to have students pick standards to learn. Have students write collab rubrics. The bookkeeping aspect means that "SWBAT" is often obsolete as personalization takes the forefront #edutopiachat
I'd love to hear more about that! I am a huge mastery learning and personalized learning advocate. Will you share a little bit more with me about how these work and how you make them? #edutopiachat#masterychat
This is a great point - I find that fewer choices at start of year can grow to more choices later- students need to learn the skill of choosing #edutopiachat
A3 Jumping in late. Sometimes offering just the choice of lined or unlined paper is powerful. Write Or draw your response. Choice can lead to greater ownership of learning. #edutopiachat
I try to make sure that students can work with an idea by reading/writing, by watching/listening, and/ or by creating. Common rubric for content keeps us all on the same page in terms of rigor. Not always easy, but always worth it. #edutopiachat

A4: Assessments should show what the kids did well and why, where they need to improve and why, and most importantly, for Ss to think about their thinking and why they answered something a certain way. Assessments should allow Ss to reflect on their learning #edutopiachat
RT MarianaGSerrato: A4: The data tells me what we need to go back to, who is ready to move on, what misconceptions need to be cleared up, etc. #edutopiachat New posts for #learning#pln#education#edtech#edchat
RT finleyt: A4: Self-assessment is quick and useful. But if we ask for it, changes to the curriculum should be obvious to the students.

A4 I use playtest questions, as if each lesson was a beta test: What did you like best? Why? What did you like least? Why? Imagine your friend is coming in next. How would you explain how to play (create)? What tips would you give them to be good at this? #edutopiachat

#profdev RT katyfarber: Co- creating assessments with students helps them think about what they can aspire to do and how to get there with support and voice. #edutopiachat
#profdev RT liz_fiore1: A4. Assessments is like GPS. I can pin point their location and create a learning path for them to reach their destination. #edutopiachat
A3: Choice is SO important! When giving students projects, for example, I give them various options to present the content by differentiating the end product. I’ve also used choice boards in the past. #edutopiachat
Indeed! It is what happens after the assessment which is critical for growing the learning and for linking to next steps. There must be a response to the assessment. #edutopiachat
A4: I always start class with a low-stakes Socrative quiz on the readings. This is new for me, after I discovered that frequent low stakes testing lowers students' stress. #edutopiachat
And they are also seeing that it’s okay to fail as long as we do better next time. It fosters a culture of shared learning and that has been amazing. Not saying I haven’t had moments of frustration but the good outweighs it tremendously! #edutopiachat
A5 Technology can collect and aggregate some data. But open ended assessments like reflections still should be the priority. These reflections can be published online as book reviews, for example. #edutopiachat
A4) Use formative assessments, pretests, exit-tickets to check for student understanding. Analyze immediate feedback. Redirect or adjust instruction where needed. 🙌 #edutopiachat#formative#assessment
Assessment data must reflect accurate levels of mastery. Cannot be simply a thing we do just because it's Friday in Week #8, and we always have an exam on this day. Assessment should be weaved into fabric of learning at the moment. #edutopiachat

A4: Assessment data helps me plan for differentiation whether it is setting up small group instruction or determining future lessons. I also use that information to conduct data chats with students and set goals. #edutopiachat
A4: Assessment data should be used to try out and test new ideas in the classroom and the school. This allows for small innovaton experiments to pan out, be assessed and if successful, roll out to a wider audience. #edutopiachat

A5. All my formative assessments are digital. Immediate results=immediate feedback and response. I can speed up or slow down my pacing according to the feedback. Reteaching can happen while it is fresh. #edutopiachat
A5 Oh, goodness! Let me count the ways! #EdPuzzle is a great one. Google Forms with @flubaroo is another one! @khanacademy is a must if you teach math- such rich, useful, and easy to understand data about S progress! So. Many. Choices. #edutopiachat
A5: Tech allows us to interact in a wide variety of ways. So many tools that allow you to create diff paths, assessments, and products. Immediate feedback or not, sharing and collaborating. Endless possibilities. #edtech#edutopiachat
A5: I like that I can get data quickly using online tools. I can also give students feedback in the moment. Tech also allows me to be more creative assessments. This question reminded me of TPACK https://t.co/m4ODebS5FI#edutopiachat#edtech#TPACK
A5: This semester I used shared docs during the entire research paper writing process with students - it was formative conversation in the comments all semester long! #edutopiachat
A3) Offer 3 options. The Teacher defines 2 choices. The learner can propose a 3rd choice that meets the learning outcome(s) #edutopiachat#SoAllCanLearn
Yes, the goal is to become partners in learning, but students need to be coached to get there. It starts early, like first grade or earlier. We want kids who "own" the learning but it takes time and skillful teaching to get them there. #edutopiachat
A3: Giving students choices can be as simple as allowing them alternate seating, and as complex as giving them different options of ways to assess their knowledge instead of a standard test #edutopiachat
A5: I use screencastify to make content available for viewing (and reviewing) but visual learners. Explain Everything does the same for some teachers, I think? #edutopiachat

A5: Technology nice for curating evidence of learning. Ex: digital portfolios where Ss create their learning narrative and choose which products will be considered for assessment of mastery. #edutopiachat
A2: My favorite assessment strategy is to think deeply about 5 students before class starts, and go into class with the intention of asking and figuring out something that interests or puzzles me about those individuals. #edutopiachat

I love docs comments for just this. It helps me get into the writing process with my students so I can clarify their points and my expectations. #edutopiachat
A5: Lately, I've asked students to post sketchnote index cards to Slack as formative assessment. It's ridiculously useful for blended learning. #edutopiachat
A2 - LMS tools like Google Classroom to give students partially completed rubrics, having them complete. I also codesign lessons with students. I allow/encourage students to pivot in PBL based on their interests #stuchoice#edutopiachat
Free Web 2.0 tools are great for differentiation and form assessment. Back channel discussion boards for quiet students (Padlet, today’s meet), for pulse checks (answergarden, plickers, kahoot) #edutopiachat
A5. I have been using @Flipgrid as a tool to assess student speaking skills formatively this semester. It's been quite enjoyable. #edutopiachat#Flipgrid

A5: For students, technology can provide another medium for them to show what they have learned. For teachers it can help with organization of data, but we must make sure we use technology to assist us in making educational decisions, not make the decisions for us! #edutopiachat
Again, a variety of methods, education isn't a 'of experience size fits all' The five stage demonstation process that I mentioned for A1 is great for a quick assessment. For a more informative assessment i use quizzes, timed tasks and oh ye, talking to my students #edutopiachat
A5) Use screen recording tools like ScreenCastify or Snagit to explain the steps taken in skills use like equations or writing #edutopiachat#SoAllCanLearn

I agree! And allowing students opportunities to talk and discuss improves their writing skills as well and writing helps them put their thoughts on paper. #edutopiachat
A2 In order for teachers to assess and for students to progress, kids needs to be DISCUSSING and WRITING all the time. In whole groups, small groups, and one-on-one conversations with their teachers. #edutopiachat

A1 Differentaition is not only important, it is requisite. It provides equal access and opportunity for every student. Differentiation proves to kids that their teacher is on their side- emotionally and academically. #edutopiachat
A1: Differentiation is everything! Everyone's different, so differentiation is a strategy to create access points for all. There's a connection here to UDL, too :) #edutopiachat
A1: In order for learning to happen it needs to meet the learner where they are and build on what they know and can do. Otherwise, teaching is just talking and listening. #edutopiachat
