Welcome to #NYEDChat! In light that it’s #MLKDay, tonight’s discussion is "Service Projects for Students & Staff” with guest moderator @Joe_Mazza. Let’s rock Twitter with all of our thoughts on #service tonight.
Please introduce yourself. Share your name, role in education/life, and location. Be sure to use #NYEDChat in your tweets. I'm at the moderating desk: Carol, ELA Consultant from Long Island, NY. Hoping friends from NY and beyond check in tonight to #CelebrateMonday & #MLKDay.
I welcome @Joe_Mazza as guest moderator tonight and thank him for bringing the idea of #service to #NYEDChat for tonight's topic. Congratulations to Joe for being named a MS principal in NYS.
A1 Service is an interactive action step to provide support to those in need. Through service learning schools can explore ways to bring academic, physical, and/or emotional support for neighborhood, state, national issues, and/or global problems. #NYEDChat
A1: Service is the Unconditional giving of one's self with no self-expectations. It is a selfless way to exist in a manner that benefits others, the community, the world. #NYEDChat
A 1 Service for me means giving time, support, to others to help them meet needs. The reward is intrinsic—when you serve you gain much more than you give. #NYEDChat
Community-Based Service Learning page https://t.co/ZZEnW0tCpn Our ENY-Brooklyn school had a phenomenal year long Health Careers & Foster Grandparent Program https://t.co/ipd2nMtij7 "Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?” MLK #NYedchat
A1: Service is when you provide help for others with no expectation of them doing something for you. In schools this can be accomplished via service learning and other projects #NYEDChat
A1. I agree - putting others above the needs of yourself and expecting nothing in return. I would add that it’s also about restoring equity and ensuring all have what they need to be successful. #NYedChat#NYedChat
A1 Thinking about and looking out “others” How can we help our communities? What is it our communities need? Recognizing each of us has the power to do “something” for others. Be the example, the role model. #NYEDChat
GREAT responses on What is Service. Now let’s include schools.
A2: In what ways does your school culture integrate SERVICE as ‘part of the bricks?’
#NYEDChat
A1. Service is the core of teaching & I try to demonstrate that everyday. Yes it feels good to be recognized for service to others but it is done bc it is what is needed. Service is doing the right thing for the person/group in front of you. #NYEDChat
I look forward to hearing the responses to #NYEDchat's Q2: In what ways does your school integrate SERVICE into its culture? At #elanetwork mtgs. on LI, we discuss ways to support lifelong reading. Schools have come up w creative projects that reach out to their community.

YES. How can we support our local community if there is little/no relationship there. It’s on us as edus to reach out, identify areas we can support via SERVICE.

A2: Some say charity and service begins at home. Our students practice daily, the selfless process of being there for each other as a matter of giving and grace. Middle School, public school- Illinois. #NYEDChat
A2 We have done penny wars for charities (recently California fires), Giving Tree (for the holidays), food drive, and a community garden. Our student senate also just facilitated Kindness Week. #nyedchat
A2: We regularly have students involved in some sort of service project. We have various food drives, clothing drives, etc. need to ramp up the service learning aspect, however. Eager to hear what others do. #NYEDChat
I see "service culture" closely aligned with notions of innovation; we can center our innovative efforts around community service needs; it is about reframing problems as opportunities! #NYEDChat

A 2 Schools I’ve worked in have peer tutoring, buddy reading, drives for food and clothing for families in the community, book drives for day care centers, volunteering at the hospital, at ASPCA. Two had a specific service hours for graduation. #NYEDChat
A2 From food drives, Book drives, clothing drives, to making food for the hungry. To learning about ways to volunteer. Community service, service learning. Setting the goals to “think about others” from preschool to 6th grade. #NYEDChat
Thank you Carol! It is so amazing to know that #NYEDchat started as a small idea about 6 years ago (thank you @tomwhitby for inspiring us) & has continued to grow thanks to your dedicated efforts!
Our student senate and National Junior Honor Society kids are the driving force of most of these. The Giving Tree and food drive are traditions run by one of our community members. #nyedchat
A2: SERVICE is embedded in our nearly all of our elementary school’s lessons and use #PBL that always includes a “making the world better” lens.
#NYEDChat
GREAT responses on What is Service. Now let’s include schools.
A2: In what ways does your school culture integrate SERVICE as ‘part of the bricks?’
#NYEDChat
A2: Service is a big part of the high school through the SHARE club(students have a responsibility everywhere), class advisors recently have done "A day of giving" but it's not systemic yet. #notyet always room for #growth#nyedchat
We've done something similar at @Skyline_WC, where students plan, organize + facilitate Family Fun Nights in K-8 schools. There are fun activities + students see literacy as exciting + families get more tips on how to foster + sustain that excitement outside of school. #NYEDChat

A2: from my perspective as I'm still newer to the building service is a way to create deeper meaning into our learning. It allows for connections that take students to that next level in their understanding.
#NYEDChat
Great share MaryRose! And you're right; while it is not systemic yet, I think it will continue to grow in #WeAreChappaqua thanks to people like you! #DayOfGiving#NYEDChat
A2. At our BOCES, we design learning opportunities based on the needs of the learners and leaders in the districts across our region. Our districts drive the learning; we help them chart the course. #NYEDChat
I have seen organizations like NJHS and NHS require service hours which require students to go through the motions...we need to be intentional in feeling what service truly means. #NYEDChat
A3 @DeniseMurai & I were just DMing. She asked if she could use tonight's Qs w Ss to get their responses. I asked for feedback when she does. Now that is real time action to make Ss aware of #servicelearning. #NYEDChat
We want to move away from service experiences just being a requirement or something that looks good on the college resume; service should be intrinsically motivated for the good of others. Comes back to the whole idea of being a Bucket Filler! #NYEDChat
Agreed, but that just means we need to provide them as many opportunities as we can. Let the students come up with an idea, get out of their way, and support them for success. #nyedchat
A2 If each school would pick up the banner of #KindnessMatters like you have that would be wonderful. Kindness and service starts in small ways. #NYEDChat
A2- I am not too familiar with Relay for Life but I’d say that qualifies! Also, Giving from Grafflin provided meaningful support for many years. #nyedchat
A3: We started a student council and have given them opportunities to develop service projects and take a leadership role in the school. They’re involved in more and more decisions #NYEDChat
A2: My school does a wonderful job at trying to incorporate SERVICE. Students have a 60 hours volunteer service requirement to graduate and we also host Day of Service in April where we take our Advisory classes on a trip to volunteer at a local place. #NYEDChat
A3: Students need to know the value of service. They have to feel the power of giving to others so they are motivated and inspired to take the reigns and create what is meaningful to them...to give of themselves. #NYEDChat
A3 Our students have terrific ideas. Allow them to come up with a service experience that is important to them, not just something the adults suggest. Our students can connect with others and get it done! #nyedchat
A3: We can empower our students through service by exposing them to when they make a positive difference in their community they (1) feel better and (2) can see a change. #NYEDChat
A3. Service is first and foremost about giving of oneself. Service is best taught through action and modeling; when others see us give of ourselves to better others, the giving appears easier for others to try. #NYEDChat
I was the principal of a school which required service hrs. for graduation! I felt the same way, until I experienced resistant students get hooked on service. Most would go well above and beyond what was required. What started as a requirement, ended as a passion! #NYEDChat
A 3 Many high schools require service for graduation. Once students get involved they develop a sense of community responsibility that can last a lifetime. #NYEDChat
A3: being able to connect to real world problems and being able to develop real world solutions that provoke change is extremely powerful. It is also an important skill set many colleges and employers desire that they believe students are lacking today.
#NYEDChat
Are you following ALL of the people here tonight? If not, you are missing out on the incredible minds and personalities that drive truly innovation in education. #NYEDChat
A3: "If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one." - Mother Teresa. It's debilitating when you try to serve everyone. Know your local community, learn the need and have Ss know the ppl they impact and serve. This knowledge is power- empowering our Ss #nyedchat

A2 My children's high school also encourages students to engage in service learning projects for their end-of-senion year project - part of the graduation requirements. #NYEDChat
A3: Our students are asked what problem do they want to solve that will help someone else. The projects they develop, together with their thought process, amaze me.
We have a K-12 continuum. Here’s where our process takes students: https://t.co/Jl6eno6OKL#NYEDChat
Service projects make an initiative to involve all stakeholders in the school. It unites the parents, teachers, students and community. I love that it gives SS's an opportunity to give back. What a great way to teach civic responsibility!#nyedchat#kinderchat
Often it is assumed that these people know how to do this, or how to get started. It should be our charge to make sure they have what they need.
#NYEDChat

Tony, As a team, we grow together to become more than just the voice of NYS edus. We have moved beyond our state to include the ideas of others. Thanks @tomwhitby and all our moderators and guest moderators over the years. YEAH #NYEDChat!
A3 My a-ha moment. Giving student voice, empowering them becomes a reality w/little steps. Sts learn about their “agency” through responsibility from class helpers, 2school jobs 2larger picture. Integrating into curriculum a look at world & give them voice 2be in charge #NYEDChat
I Agree! Here is an example if anyone is interested in learning how these programs are structured: “Service Learning” hours as a requirement for graduation: https://t.co/0YqjoR0XSE#NYedChat
And I'd also add that, for students, service projects also start by interrogating their positionality + subjectivity in the spaces that they're entering. What does their identity, presence + gaze mean where they're serving? #NYEDChat
I posted #tutor#mentor blog article yesterday about how I'd spend #MLKDay of service and educator from Kentucky, and #clmooc network, responded with this tweet. Hope others take a look and add more #Learning into #service. #NYEDChat
A3: We can empower our students through SERVICE by teaching them that there are more people out there in the world besides them and someone could always use our help and kindness. Service they do can be big or small, but all of it makes a difference. #NYEDChat
A3 we have a stack of micro credentials students can earn at elem, middle and HS levels for service represented by digital badges they can share. #NYEDChat
THANK YOU! A great collection of thoughts and ideas around SERVICE IN SCHOOLS on #nyedchat tonight. Thanks for sharing and continue to share your thoughts and ideas. Idea Bandit is a thing and it’s legal. Start asking questions. Let students take the lead.
I’d add that while service means putting other’s needs first, personal rewards gained from these acts are quite powerful, gifts we can ignite for our students: #empathy#perspective#humanity#nyedchat
Thank you for the inspiration #NYEDChat... Let's be intentional in our guidance of our students towards a love of service and being there for others. #NYEDChat
A3: It takes many years of practice to be good at this. If students are engaged, starting in elementary school, and continuing through HS, imagine skills they'd learn and passions they'd develop. #NYEDChat

A2: We tap into our kids interests, listen to how they want to help & then we support them in carrying it out. Daily kindness challenges have helped this process! #nyedchat
A3 A large number of our student clubs require community service. I think it is great to expose them to service because until we do it, we do not understand the value of service. #NYEDChat
A3 we have an app each kid has on their mobile device they can track their service and our community partners can share events where service is needed. Kids can choose how and when to serve. Empowering Ss. #nyedchat
A3: We have a community service club that comes up with monthly ideas of how to give back. We support local agencies with collections and acts of kindness. #wesgivesback#nyedchat
Thank you @cvarsalona@Joe_Mazza When we look out there a great reminder there is so much more that can be done. It really is up to each of us in this village of educators. #MLK2019 is always a good time to reflect and keep moving forward
#NYEDChat
#NYEDChat is officially over but those in this chat can continue conversations with colleagues they have met. Community building is far-reaching as evidenced by all the voices from around the states tonight. Thank you all for joining in the conversation started by @Joe_Mazza.
We have service as one of our College/career/life indicators, a BOE/district goal for 100% serve annually. It's in our conversations as we plan PBL units and a tenet of all our clubs. #nyedchat
Look at this cMap showing work interns did working w #tutor#mentor Connection/Institute from 2006-2015. Imagine this as page on your school web site, showing work your students did to visualize birth-to-work strategies for kids in poverty areas. #nyedchathttps://t.co/Jtb520E3EE
It is my pleasure to spread the #positivity of connected edu communities of thought, Tony. When Joe came to me with this idea for tonight's #NYEDChat, I was so excited because I believe in service and today was the right day for this chat to happen. #MLKDay
Ideally service is embraced by students as more. The @KaiserHigh club @wipeoutcrew carry their commitment weekly for over 5 yrs. Faculty advisor @ptgbalazs is one of the best & passionate educators. See their service & commitment in action at https://t.co/Jl6eno6OKL#NYEDChat
