What an amazing environment for students to learn in. It reminds me of my daughter's Google-like office at Capital One where her team ponders, collaborates, executes plans. #NYEDChat

Welcome Tim from Nebraska. I am so glad that you are here for the first time at #NYEDChat. You will love our community of connected edus and colleagues.
A1: Last month, I watched via GHO my grandbaby trying to open a book by herself. She had pulled out many books. Then, stopped to "read." It was fascinating to see her totally engaged. She moved beyond pulling to the next level of interaction. #learning#process#NYEDChat
A 1 Last week my reading group were so into their self- selected books they were reading in the hall between classes instead of socializing! High engagement due to choice and loving their books! #NYEDChat
A1 We had a play day. Students brought in toys and games from home. There was SO much learning going on. Math, reading, cooperation, social skills. The list goes on. #NYEDChat
@LrobbTeacher Love the vision of this Laura - how children connect w books is such a function of them making sense of the world and informing that through story #NYEDChat
A 1 Last week my reading group were so into their self- selected books they were reading in the hall between classes instead of socializing! High engagement due to choice and loving their books! #NYEDChat
A1: When I quietly observe/listen to my Ss independently read I’m in awe of the way their brains are working/learning new things on their own as they work to apply strategies we’ve working on! It is one of the most rewarding parts of my day!! #NYEDchat
A1 my kids engagement was off the charts! They chose what they wanted to play and the amount of academic skills that fit in was astounding. They didn’t want to stop for anything! I only needed to be there to ask more questions and dig deeper. #NYEDChat
A1: Watching children play we note that we do not need to stand in and front-load the activity. We need only to stand back and let fun do what it does naturally. . .draw, include, sustain, and move forward in a generative manner. Play begets story and loops back. #nyedchat

A1: We need to design spaces that bring Ss together in ways that meet their learning styles => students learn when they talk, experiment, communicate and tinker => mimicking the teacher is more about compliance than learning #nyedchat

A2: Typically, students who don’t have a lot of direction and what they need is direction and more guidance from us. I feel this is what they’d want #NYEDChat
When we empower Ss to lead their own learning experiences we are doing more than teaching them independence, we are sending them an underlying message that we believe in them #nyedchat
Heard a edu gaming expert say recently that kids won’t play a game that isn’t challenging - learning has to challenge but keep kids motivated - bet learning to tie shoes is like that for kids #NYEDChat#determination
A1: We need to design spaces that bring Ss together in ways that meet their learning styles => students learn when they talk, experiment, communicate and tinker => mimicking the teacher is more about compliance than learning #nyedchat
@pammoran we sustain this playful and engaged learning by letting kids choose what and how they learn something. If K students can choose a topic and research it, than older students can as well! #NYEDChat
A2b Each 1 of kids mentioned had own interests other than school. What if, their passions were tapped early on? HS Jr. who failed Regents refused to work in summer school. I stepped in as admin 2 teach-give options, model & guide. Each child is unique. #NYEDChat
A2a Some children voice that they don't like school-it doesn't meet their needs or passions; some fear school because of their learning gaps; some don't feel included. 1 of the home school kids was bullied & refused to go back to class. #NYEDChat
A2 I find that children want to come to school to see and interact with friends. I believe children who do poorly academically try to have hope that someone will help them. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat A2 This is my flowchart to succeed with my Ss. I try to make my math class the best part of my Ss day. LOVE MY JOB! Don't know of any kids that don't want to be in my room. I do hear other Ss saying, I wish you were my Tr.
A2: An air of expectancy starts with creating culturally responsive classrooms => kids don't want to be in classrooms that AREN'T relevant to their lives! #nyedchat
@pammoran we absolutely do! I did until this year! I have let me k students choose topics and research and teach others- from posters to imovies. We need to trust them more and be ok with going outside of our comfort zone! #NYEDChat
We have found that social learning community is a core design principle of @TimelessLrng - where kids scaffold, find aspirational peers, learn social emotional competencies #NYEDChat
Yes! MANY adults do! 😠 Nobody knows what they are capable of until he or she tries. Give children opportunities to fail so they can learn from them. They may even exceed their own expectations. #NYEDchat
.We provide lots of professional learning and I seriously get tired of the limited mindset so many teachers have. I show them samples of student work at their grade level & they say, well my kids can't! #nyedchat#TimelessLearning

So true Alicia- thanks for jumping in here- what does a class need to look like to be safe to make mistakes and learn from those as a path to learning?? #NYEDChat

Hi friend! Great to have you here tonight- what do notice when kids are learning outside of school or class? And lets put a plug in for your AT book- title? #NYEDChat
Q3 Students need to know that who they are matters, that how they interact with each other matters, that how they engage with the world matters. #NYEDChat
A3 children should be learning social skills while playing, learning how to share with each other. As far as walking in the halls how to treat others with respect and smile no matter how bad your day is going #nyedchat
Just as true when we talk about the "word play" of poetry. Poetry, like Jell-o, sometimes just needs a kind of mold (or form). But people can be pretty inventive with the ingredients after this. Tomato and celery flavors is probably a product of too little direction. #NYEDChat
A3: During play children should learn respect of others & materials, cooperation, sharing. While eating lunch-respectful conversation, politeness-While walking through halls-tone of voice, appropriate behavior, respect for class & teacher. #NYEDChat
Our helpful pages for this #NYEDChat on timeless learning. Learning Pages https://t.co/wvlnS21TrS We as Educators -Parents - Grandparents - Relatives & Friends) need to model being a constant learner as learning takes place at all times and places with or without tech.

A3: I feel like children should be learning what it means to be kids, what it means to socialize, what it means to interact, what it means to talk, what it means to explore an idea, what it means to stretch their thinking, what it means to imagine. #NYEDChat
A3: While playing, Ss should be learning social skills, sportsmanship. During lunch, we foster table manners and socializing with peers. In the halls it’s about mutual respect for other students. We teach them not to interrupt others students’ learning #nyedchat
Hahaha - LOVE this. Am starting poetry with my very own at-risk group tomorrow & we will be playing with form while they try things out. Perfect metaphor. #NYEDChat

Happy children collaborating, conversing, experimenting, questioning, Ts actively listening & engaging, freedom to move around & explore... the classroom isn’t a prison. Children should be actively learning, engaging, and enthused... in my opinion. #NYEDchat

You know I am a believer in Yes for creatives who have ideas for how to better education for young people … not necessarily the same as making schools better #NYEDChat

A3 students should be learning social skills while playing. At lunch students should be learning how to hold a conversation, show empathy, how to listen well, and ask questions to engage their friend/s. #NYEDChat
A3: How to positively interact in a community - to talk/listen, to care/support, to effectively cope with success/failure, to empathize/sympathize with others, and so many other invaluable social lessons! #NYEDChat
Jerry= fab to see you here and so appreciate your sharing learning pages. We all know what motivated learning feels like but often our examples come from outside school #NYEDChat
Travis- thanks for saying that — we cram so much into their cognitive learning and sometimes forget that the competencies that matter most to life success are the ones you list #NYEDChat
A4: Ira's correct.Children in poverty have different prior knowledge than those w/ nursery school backgrounds.Ts must work w all children 2 understand their conceptual knowledge & build foundational skills.3 million word gap exists but can be overcome w careful Tching #NYEDChat
A4 This is the million dollar question. Since my career revolved around teaching children in poverty I look forward to #NYEDChat participants' answers.
A4 these students have been exposed to different skills, different social settings, different people. The key word is different not worse. They’re learning will be different but not worse. We often don’t give these students a chance. We judge and expect less. #NYEDChat
.Truly my new favorite quote. As a child of poverty, I knew "different" but had an entourage of educators who believed in me and challenged me to greatness! #nyedchat#AllMeansAll#TimelessLearning
#NYEDChat A3 The largest lesson of play and every day school routines is interactions with others. JOY sounds like children playing. This is a picture of what JOY looks like. The adult that creates this memory with the kid is blessed with JOY beyond words.
Creative thinking is so often weighted down with the “stuff” of education—worksheets, grades, cold, lifeless writing, joyless reading, teacher-centric activities, etc. Given time and space to think and generate ideas, creativity blooms. #NYEDChat
A4 We need to stop judging and see the child before us who really wants to be a learner. We just need to find the way to help that child along. #NYEDChat
A4: Every family, regardless of extenuating circumstances has their own norms, values, behaviors, and we need to embrace and learn from all of them. #NYEDChat
Especially math- heard a great example of zero-based thinking w math recently If the math curriculum for high school was abandoned, what would we create in its place? #NYEDChat
In reply to
@poly_math_, @cvarsalona, @teachermantrav
A 4 It means we need to honor and respect what each child brings to our classes and tap into their knowledge and help them build on it! Should never put a value judgement on what children know! #NYEDChat
A4: We educators have to be steadfast in creating and maintaining equitable opportunities for our students. Knowing our kids allows us to put them in a position where socio-economic differences has no bearing on learning potential #nyedchat
I agree. I find myself asking students to engage in emotional thinking—how did this make you feel? What are you thinking? What’s thumping in your heart? Personal response is key in education. #NYEDChat
.Truly my new favorite quote. As a child of poverty, I knew "different" but had an entourage of educators who believed in me and challenged me to greatness! #nyedchat#AllMeansAll#TimelessLearning
Thanks Joe - can you share your work w maker dads here? How do we create rich experiences that get kids in the room and not just middle class? #NYEDChat

#NYEDChat A4 Having experience in a Tiltle I school opens your eyes. Kids from a home without all the modern day "necessities" have EXTREME different views of worldly things. You need to make them feel safe in your room.
A4 as educators we need to respect where all students come from and develop relationships with all students taking the time to get to know them. #NYEDChat
Among all the sports and politics #NYEDChat's voices are standing out. Thanks for helping us Reach throughout Twitter. Keep it up eduvoices that are here. Trending!
I have seen this happen many times in my career. If we treat students as unique beings and offer them authentic learning opportunities the reach starts to happen. Guidance allows the learner to grow. #NYEDChat
A5 Children who are engaged in their learning show their curiosity, wondering, discovery overtly. They work collaboratively w/ peers & explore on their own. Ts need to kidwatch to see which Ss' are involved. Disinterested, puzzled looks are noticeable. #NYEDChat
Q5 Today, attention looked like one of my non-readers not doing a class activity because she wanted to finish a chapter of the book she chose. It was worth letting her keep reading. #NYEDChat
Yes that is an accurate statement. Sometimes edus shy away from working with children in Title 1 schools but if you do you know the benefits that REAL teaching brings. #NYEDChat
A5: I think it can "look" different depending on the task at hand, but there's always a "feel" and an energy when all students are attentive and engaged. #NYEDChat
Schools that offer makerdads/makermoms opportunities shine a spotlight on all of the ways we can MAKE in life. Activate those parent makers. Empower them to create their own mini makerspaces at home. We're currrently creating HOST YOUR OWN EVENT resources on the website #nyedchat
A5 attention DOES not look like a student sitting quietly in their seats, not moving. Kids showing attention show excitement. They want to share their knowledge. They are engaged by asking questions and talking about it at lunch, recess, and at home. #NYEDChat
A5: Attention looks different for everyone. It isn’t always eye contact, and silence. Considering attention spans and the ability to multi-task, we need to consider different ways kids may attend to us and what we are saying/doing. #NYEDChat
A5: Attention looks different for everyone. It isn’t always eye contact, and silence. Considering attention spans and the ability to multi-task, we need to consider different ways kids may attend to us and what we are saying/doing. #NYEDChat
A5: Our students (like us adults) are so different, so their attention looks different. Are they collaborating? Are they scripting notes? Asking questions? Thinking? Researching? We've got to give them the time, space and autonomy they need as humans. #nyedchat
I agree with ‘feel’, but what if it’s different for different people? Its difficult recognise and to teach on. If we can isolate the look and sounds it’s easier to identify and teach on #NYEdChat#timelesslearning
And we must believe that deep down inside all children want to learn. It may not be in the way we think but that is okay. Support all learners #NYEDChat
That's a great question, Pam. Part of it comes from experience and having seen great teachers work their magic and skill. Teaching really is an art and a science. I feel fortunate to have seen some of the very best! #NYEDChat
No disagreement there, Joyce. @TeachLikeAChamp does this better than anything I've seen, especially WRT establishing a common vocabulary for what great teaching looks and sounds like. #NYEDChat

We;ve tried to capture the power of expanding observation beyond our filters and biases — both allow us to see far less than when we push our thinking to see deeply and learn from others what they see #NYEDChat
Reflaction: I'll continue to build effective professional development to ensure that Ts understand how to teach w passion, vigor, and joy, build relationships w Ss, scaffold lessons so that all children can learn? #NYEDChat
Since it’s International Facilitation Week, I’ll continue to support school leaders who facilitate staff pd using Andragogy, with resources, questions and encouragement (virtually since I’m on my travels) #NYEDChat
Reflaction: this week I will call the Inuit Children's Centre and invite them into my classroom to honour a student who has been sharing her culture with us. For some reason, this has been hard for me to "get to", but I am committing to this action. #NYEDChat
#NYEDChat A5 I try to enable peer tutoring as much as possible in my room. When kids are teaching their peers, their retention is magnified. It's AWEsome walking around the room and observing the learning. Kids respond to each other in a variety of ways.
I like to tell them that it's hard for me to let go because I'm afraid they probably know more than I do! ;) (But honestly I think for most teachers it often comes down to "how will I grade this?") #NYEDChat
Sometimes students are perplexed by what we offer. If choice is allowed then students can be creative learners in the way they would like to express themselves. #NYEDChat
And also students aren't used to having it. But when it's part of the culture (both for students and for staff) special things happen. It's hard to consider yourself a PBL advocate w/o autonomy as one of your norms #nyedchat
Kind of sad really how much emphasis we put on traditions that return little of time investment of teachers - test prep, homework, most grading practices, worksheets, cram curriculum standards #NYEDChat
Please join #NYEDChat on 10.29.18 with the topic, “Teacher Leadership in Action: Building Collective Efficacy” at 8:00 pm EST. @LisaMeade23 will moderate w guest Mods: Kathleen Skellie, Amy Musante, Meagan Wright.
