One thing I am working on this summer is looking back at my unit plans (or at them while I am planning them for the first time) and figuring out where I can give students choice in a relevant way. #LearnLAP

A3: Create authentic relationships with every student so they are invested in your class & so they can give you authentic feedback that you’re willing to receive in order to make adjustments to the curriculum. #LearnLAP
Yes to passion! I do a few minutes of direct instruction at the beginning and I never had Ss more engaged than when I nerded out about shapes and an S broke the trance-like silence with “Miss, I’m not saying you’re weird. But you’re getting very excited about *squares*” #LearnLAP

If you're going to lecture, mix it up. Keep them guessing. Over lecture can bore students, no matter how good one is at storytelling. Need to turn the onus of learning over to Ss at some point! #LearnLAP
A3b. Teaching elementary reading and can’t list a book you’ve read in the last 6 months that has anything to do with your grade level, students’ interest or even a book at an adult level 🤣 sad but true! Happens all the time time. #learnlap
#learnlap A3: Too often,Ts ask a Q and wait for 1 of many barking seals to shout the right answer. Instead, make Ss respond to what the first S says. Encourage constructive engagement, ask quiet Ss to respond to another's idea. Nurture convo vs. toss a fish to the "right" seal.

I really made that my focus this year, being in the hall, engaging in conversations, learning more about the Ss, being ok with getting out of the way #learnlap
Plus any "lecture" type delivery of content, however entertaining, should be kept to around 15 minutes or LESS, and LESS is better in this case...not more! :) #LearnLAP
A3- I find this happening now and then in my upper level science elective- in times when direct instruction is “necessary” and we aren’t doing hands on labs/ activities students are unengaged. Any suggestions for matching content-heavy science with #LearnLAP ?
A3: Talking at Ss instead of listening. Doing the same activities (no novelty). Sometimes, we will even say, “I know this is boring, but you have to learn this for (insert name of standardized test).” #LearnLAP
A4: Providing them with opportunities to contribute to the learning. Helping their voice be heard within the learning. It might mean designing a campaign poster for a historical candidate, creating a Bill Nye type of video for a sci concept, or more! #learnlap

A4: If you want to achieves fully engaged classroom, you start by teaching them how to be engaged. Never assume anything. I was once ridiculed for teaching my Ss how to eat in the cafe. But, they were the best behaved and complemented for their actions. #Learnlap

Thanks for mentioning this. Students may think they don't want to "think," but we know this is not true. They want to be thinking for themselves and forming their own opinions in class. #LearnLAP

I was so excited about FG at the beginning of the year and had the same issue. So I gave kids the option to do FG or a blog post. As a result it increased my students' willingness to blog :) #lesserof2evils But I will try FG again next year #LearnLAP

Yes, I am sure that can be challenging, but by understanding the Ss, having those relationships at the start and being a focus, such a difference #learnlap
Yes. I’ll have Ss who I tell to just cover up the camera or point it an object. One kid drew a picture and pointed the camera at it the whole time. That’s fine. There is always a workaround. #Learnlap
A8: We are all humans - before being teacher or pupil. I love this quote..."learning can be done within the everyday rhythm of life." When there is a connection, a 2-way bond, both sides feel valued and work collaboratively. #LearnLAP
