Welcome to the snow day edition of !
Ill help out... if you need it!!!
Introduce your cold selves and where you are from. Having school tomorrow?
Wait you all have snow days already???
Hi Joe, math & STEM coach from rainy CA. Thankful we’re getting rain with our years of drought
That is awesome. I was there this summer and didn't request one glass of water (lots of notecards on tables in SF)
Tonight on we are talking about...
We’re definitely thankful for the rain & snow in the Sierras.
Natalie, Ky, and we already have a snow day tomorrow
Stacey, 4th grade. No school...for a while!! Sitting next to
Sherri, ELA teacher from Fayette County. No school for us tomorrow.
Hey Sherri! How are you doing?
That’s a fun video! Thanks for sharing.
Ok... might be an intimate but powerful tonight. Anything goes. What's on your mind?
Go! What kind of resources?
I'm doing well. Catching up on reading & some eduwonk projects.
I will miss seeing you too but I am glad that everyone will be safe in this weather
Grant writing is on my mind - how much is too much to ask for? What makes a successful proposal?
Q1: If you had to choose your favorite digital resource that makes the most impact... what would it be?
A1: Easy answer - my (not that they’re digital bc they are dynamic, professionals there). https://t.co/VRq7lQ6260
Q1: If you had to choose your favorite digital resource that makes the most impact... what would it be?
A1: Right now . Focused on helping my Ss learn their multiplication facts fluently. We do a Kahoot quiz daily
A1" I found this new website... replacement for exit slips... Zeal!
That's a great answer & I agree! My pln is the best! I have learned so much from them. They motivate me to be better
I've been working on my dissertation- I've been thinking about how can we create authentic learning experiences for students
Will have to check this out! Use exit tickets daily in my class.
Only one Device REQUIRED!!!
A1. I also think I did a review of safety/library procedures when we came back in Jan.
And it has a name...Jonas!!
A1- As a teacher that incorporates music into almost every lesson, I say YouTube! Great resource for education-songs!--
A1: I love for annotating digital texts & Google classroom for collaboration for my Ss
That is a great topic right there. Totally worth a dedicated chat/discussion on that one. What are your thoughts?
I've always said, "If I don't know the answer I have a bunch of people in my pocket who I can lean on." https://t.co/32lzrEfv4T
That's a great answer & I agree! My pln is the best! I have learned so much from them. They motivate me to be better
is amazing... there is more there than you realize
We need to talk! Want to have real authentic learning for my Ss for math. Not sure if that's project based learning
A1 anything that allows Elem kids to collaborate online in a safe way
I like this resource, too! I can see lots of potential for this!
Had a teacher in my school use and the Ss really enjoyed it!
I use this everyday at the beginning of class for multiplication quizzes. My Ss love it!
When I taught 5th last yr, I had online buddy classes for writing-peer audience/editors. https://t.co/O7OxGrWjTl
A1 anything that allows Elem kids to collaborate online in a safe way
Q2: What are your goals for the snow day tomorrow? What resources can you make for others dealing with tech?
that kind of interaction really makes the writing process meaningful for kids
School librarians are the safest! :) I dream of a day when we can not worry about this bit.
A1) my go-to for online crowdstorming - Padlet; for community building - Adobe Audition (podcasting) overall - Drive
Well I'm reading research that shows how rich the learning is in authentic learning-our current assessment doesn't match
Heard of it but haven't used it yet. Love trying new things so might give it a go. Multiple choice ?s right?
Everyone, please check out and complete the design school tutorials. They are a must for all educators! :)
It led to Ss seeing IMPTance of clarity bc their online buddies didn't know their local references (Stanford, ...)
A2: More videos for me... going to try to tackle
A2 I will be in full mode tomorrow. (little bit of work too) Don't miss the playground this year at
A2 no snow day for me so I need to bust out some planning time & respond to some emails that I missed today
A2: Submitting a proposal & then virtual work afternoon.
That’s for sure. How many lessons do we remember vs. how many experiences do we remember?
A2: Creating instruction videos for my Ss for self-paced learning. Oh and changing out of my pjs!
We need to bridge this divide. I feel like this was the same problem 20 years ago. We need to make some progress
I think PBL fits a lot of the criteria for authentic learning-would love to chat
Yes! We need people to come spread their at the https://t.co/YKSn1vEkX6
A2 I will be in full mode tomorrow. (little bit of work too) Don't miss the playground this year at
I will reach out to you! I think authentic tasks would motivate my Ss to like math more
I want to explore an app called , just ran across it today
Q2) I am currently developing a self-paced curriculum for 8th grade ELA. Probably will dedicate an hour or two on that in the AM.
Q3: What online/paper book have you read lately that is a great resource? Give Topic!
Sad I won't be attending this year. I'll be having a baby! I'll have to follow on Twitter!
A3: As a coach, I’m reading Art of Coaching by . IMPT to support & build up teachers. https://t.co/O9ZRqDGlGv
Q3: What online/paper book have you read lately that is a great resource? Give Topic!
I know right?! I'll keep my gho open so we can chat while I multitask plan
A3cont: For all educators: Having Hard Conversations by is a must read for interactions. https://t.co/O9ZRqDGlGv
Q3: What online/paper book have you read lately that is a great resource? Give Topic!
Have to tag out for a bit hope to make it back on before the end
Love self-paced learning. Trying it out this year. Lots of potential but I still have lots of work to do
A3: Poke the Box by Seth Goodin
. I completely agree-I think the issue for many people comes down to time. However deep learning requires time.
Q3) I like the Pirate family of books (Teach, Learn, Explore). Currently on Explore about gamification of the classroom.
A3: Hacking Assessment: 10 Ways to Go Gradeless in a Traditional Grades School. Still reading it.
Sounds good. (kind of like every day :)) Can't miss a second of learning from my
https://t.co/my9TSSSEyP
This book demands that you stop waiting for a road map and start drawing one instead. You know how to do this, you’ve done it before#kyedchat
thanks! The research has been quite interesting- students created games for assessment
a3: I've read several on leadership by Seth Godin. Poke the Box & Linchpin are must reads. I'm also halfway through I am Malala
I agree! Time to plan, time to teach, and time for Ss to adequately learn
I read Rethinking Grading over the summer... I have implemented as much as possible
Definitely second this tweet. & all the related books are essential for all educators. https://t.co/E9sKo5ZQYj
Q3) I like the Pirate family of books (Teach, Learn, Explore). Currently on Explore about gamification of the classroom.
Poke the Box!!!! The one you suggested!
I will send you information on creating a game challenge in Scratch- I bet math would fit right into that
Feel like I am somewhat at a standstill. Need to figure out a good way to communicate learning w/ parents
Please do! Thanks so much!!
Q4: What "resource" can you not live without? i.e. person
This has become very organized... somebody has some secret Qs prepared
oh yay! I thought it sounded familiar. It's a good one! ;)
A4: I am tweeting with mine and I am sitting next to mine!
Thanks! It was a total surprise but we are really excited!
A4: my PLN & my lunch bunch.
is definitely a wonderful thing for your students to do. Instant engagement & passion!
A4: All the amazing tchr leaders I have met the past 3-4 years. They have changed my life!!
A4: there are several ppl around the district (like ) who are my guinea pigs
I hate when I type instead of Dang it!
Yes, this is my third year implementing it. I love it.
A4: My supervisor and mentor
Q4 My PLN and conferences.
Q5: YOu know I am willing to try anything! Even if it is an !
Q4) Laura, Connor, and London Davidson.
Q5: How do having access to resources put your Ss at an advantage?
A4: I work with a great group of folks ! Of course I spend a lot of time chatting with the fabulous
Q5: How does having access to resources put your Ss at an advantage?
A4. My hubbie is my best resource because of his great listening ears!
A5: I have Google Classroom & most days I am 1 to 1. GC helps streamline my teaching by allowing me to be as paperless as possible
A5- Resources=knowledge, discovery, growth, interest, etc.
I wonder how many districts, schools, number of students we support, at this very second? is the best.
A5: I consider myself a life-long learner and with an abundance of resources that I can expose my Ss too...
Do you have a place for your students to share their projects with a larger audience?
A5: I can model what lifelong learning looks like for students and point them in the direction for information they need
LIfe-long learners make the best teachers! I am just as excited as my Ss to try something new
a5 Resources are abundant. Ts are not. We need to work on how they can ask us real questions, and get real help when they need it
A5 That depends on the questions that are being asked, doesn’t it? Resources without purpose is like…
What a wonderful thing to do. Growth comes when we're out of our comfort zone. Let's truly let our Ss lead https://t.co/gQ0rlVS2uz
oh yes. I have implemented several various over the past 2 years. It also stretched me way out of my comfort zone!
Very important that tchrs model learning for their Ss. They have to see that we value learning too
A5: no waiting on scheduling labs for one thing-it becomes on-time, right now learning
A5 when Ss have access to resources the sky is truly the limit! It raises the bar for ALL Ss
A5: My Ss have learning opportunities like , & since I am "plugged in".
I agree . Resources can be a sword!
A5.i think it's more about the teachers excitement to share the resources than just handing them over to students.
We will very soon in our super-library
Q5 I agree. They model what the see. https://t.co/l1UhhFAMy3
Very important that tchrs model learning for their Ss. They have to see that we value learning too
Right now share with a panel of community members. Would love ideas on other ways to share.
Q6: How are resources like utensils?
Do your students blog too? It'll be great to have a larger peer audience too
when Ts give Ss time to explore & address misconceptions they realize Ss have a need to know info &it was worth the time
I'm proud that we now have student reps on our SBDM councils
A6- Resources are like utensils because each one is used for a specific purpose. You can't eat soup with a fork!
A6: Resources need to be picked carefully... you can't be successful eating a salad with just a knife.
A6: sometimes you have a drawer full of gadgets and tools and all you really need is a spoon
Some. The library will help grow their reach, inside the building and out
A6. You don't have to have them all the time but sometimes you just need a spoon to get enough milk with the fruit loops!
A6 some resources have to be spoon fed and others cut through the content like a hot knife through butter
Are their projects clear about product, purpose and audience? Ss can determine audience.
A6. Resources shouldn't be the point of the lesson, they should be a tool Ss use as they learn
Love this! https://t.co/I3cWT8hzei
A6- Resources are like utensils because each one is used for a specific purpose. You can't eat soup with a fork!
So true. https://t.co/3KDbVqhKjJ
A6 some resources have to be spoon fed and others cut through the content like a hot knife through butter
I love the thought that went into the answers for this question...
some resources are like a spatula and let you flip the learning lol
Ss determine product, process, &audience. Their first step in research/planning phase.
Are they finding audiences outside community panel you mentioned?
Q7: Does the idea of using and exposing Ss to resources change with level of schooling? ie Elem, MS, HS
I'm curious if your students have ever circled back to do a second version of project?
A7: The way resources are presented may differ based on grade but using & exposing Ss to resources should be at all grade levels
Look who decided to join the party!
A7: Kids need resources at their level, but they should be accessible whenever they are needed
A7. The resource should always be there, but the level of independence should grow over time.
A7: NO... expectations should be set high. Every child has the right to be exposed to usefule resources.
Have a couple groups this sem who are building on projects from 1st sem.
A7 yes - due to coppa -digital resources used w/ Elem kids must protect their private info
A7 Everything is a balancing act, even with adult learners at varying levels of experience. Age is relative, a subjective measure.
A7: I want my students to feel like they have the freedom to use any resources they want to answer a question/finish a project.
Q7) I think they should start heavy in Elem, allow for more advancement in MS, and shift to autonomous choice in HS.
A7: I am just amazed at the number of free ebooks that are available online
Last Question is already here!
Resources need purpose. Not a new shiny object but rather there to benefit the child.
COPPA FERPA = hot mess. I need more clarification. What is the real purpose? Is it fear of unknown, or something else?
. I completely agree- it helps them become independent learners for life after public school
A7 YouTube is coming in handy w/Elem kids to show difficult concepts. Taught them how to turn on safe search & analyze quality
A7: sometimes resources don't translate for my HS Ss. The examples or graphics are too young. The topics don't go deep enough.
A7- My 4thgraders are capable and expected to use resources responsibly. Some just need a little more guidance than others.
Really? I struggle to find free stuff of quality in terms of ebooks.
definitely. does an awesome job implementing a version of genius hour with writing.
Q8: What educational resource are you most like? Why?
Schedule is off due to snow day. Joined late. But loved all the Qs & As. Several new ideas and a list of books to investigate.
I found some classics last week- maybe on Google Play
I am most like a pdf... I am hard to edit!
I really really like Not free, but awesome stuff.
. I think it would be awesome for students to write their own "textbooks"
Public domain is for real. Lots of cool stuff. Library of Congress has awesome media too
You all have been great! Thanks for joining our Edition of
