A1: My "why" has always been because I have loved teaching others, showing them new ways, understanding new ways of doing it and having fun along the way. Ok, fun all the time. #tlap
A1: My "why" has always been because I have loved teaching others, showing them new ways, understanding new ways of doing it and having fun along the way. Ok, fun all the time. #tlap
I got impatient and couldn’t wait until it gets here on Wednesday. Just grabbed the Kindle copy so I can start reading The Wild Card tonight! #BeTheWildCard#TLAP#TeacherMyth
A1: My why is still the same as it was when I began teaching, but parts of it have changed. Students change every year and I believe this is why my objectives within my why have also changed. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1: Ss deserve the best preparation for their futures: social, emotional, academic, athletic, spiritual to name a few. They deserve our best and seeing Ss growth makes it all worthwhile #tlap
A1: my why are the kids who walk through the door everyday who see me smiling and welcoming them. Might be there only positive interaction all day! #tlap
I choose to teach. Knowing I can be the difference and change the life of a child both socially and academically amazes me. I want my Ss to be excited about learning. I want them to see the value. #TLAP
My teaching WHY is relationships and leaving a legacy! You can teach curriculum all day, but knowing a child and having a connections makes an unbeatable impression! #tlap
A1: My 'why' is because I had great ts in my day and I want to pay it forward. I find that I can be the power of influence and help make a difference in Ss lives. #tlap
A1: I am pretty sure I was born this way. I always knew I was going to be a teacher the only question was “which subject? I started with math and music. Now I am Tech Integration. #tlap
A1: My why is the spark in a child’s eye when they discover something new for the first time. 💥🙌🏻 I now live for empowering teachers to empower their Ss to discover their hidden potential #tlap
A1 A teacher can change the trajectory of one child's life by helping them believe in themselves. Our job is to help shape the next generation in small positive ways everyday. How awesome is that!?! #tlap
Hi there #BeTheWildCard peeps! Melody, elem #LeadLAP principal here saying hi from N KY. 👋 I'm excited to get my hands on a copy & see what all the hype is about. #tlap
I had an amazing kindergarten teacher that inspired me to go into education. She was strict and had high expectations, but what I remember most, was that she took time to make personal connections with her students. It’s all about relationships! That’s my why! #tlap
My WHY is to make an impact in each and every child’s life. With this, my WHY drives my passion to create learning experiences so they will forever cherish and be excited to learn—even more! #tlap
My Why...My mom. She stopped going to school in 4th gr. She deserved better. All kids do. I believe an education is a gift that lasts a lifetime. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1: My "why" is all about the relationships I form with my students and the students in my school. Seeing their love of learning and how they grow, that's why I teach. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1: Someone believed in me. Someone was my cheerleader. Someone saw the good in me. Someone cheered me when I was sad. Someone made me see my value. Someone told me being smart was beautiful. Someone made me love myself. I want to do that for someone else. #tlap
A1. Why do I want to be an educator? I am passionate about helping others find their passions and immersing them in innovative ways to change their future. I want to ignite their learning and help them know THEY CAN do/be whatever they want. #tlap
A1 - My why is truly to change the future. We have such a privilege and responsibility to teach kids HOW to think for themselves and to contribute positively to their society. We actually have the power to make the future better than today! There is no better why! #tlap
A1b the love and acceptance I got from teacher regardless of who I was or what I was doing gave me a desire to be of service to others in the same capacity #TLAP
A1 to advocate for the arts and the creative minds of all students. The arts still tend to get marginalized in our schools today. They are not just for aesthetics, they provide opportunities for ss to learn ways to challenge status quo & propel our society forward. #tlap
A1: need Ss to see possibilities, believe in risk taking, know that adults make mistakes but still grow, create and be empowered. I learn from every single S and hope to facilitate the same for them #tlap
A1: My why is because I feel there is a better way and a better life ahead for our students. We can't do it the way we did it before. It's time to make it work for all #tlap
A1 I'm an educator to make a difference, to create positive experiences, to help kids learn, to promote love & kindness. I'm an educator to help make kids feel important, that they matter, to uplift, to celebrate. It's all about making things better 4 others. #tlap#bethewildcard
A1: My WHY is that I believe every student deserves to have a cheerleader & someone advocating for them! I want them to know I believe they can do great things! I want to be a difference maker! #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A1 Kicking it off with a great question! In MS, the wild card is so important! Ss starting to gain their independence and really make their own choices. That is why I love 7th grade. #tlap
a1: so that middle school students can have a positive experience - it shouldn't be the worst / most uncomfortable years - it should be transformative! #tlap
A1: The process of learning is something I have always loved and brings joy to my life. I want students to know that learning never stops and it is empowering to grow as a person beyond just the classroom. #tlap
A1: I educate because it is my calling. I educate because it is what I love to do. I educate because it is my life's work. I educate because I AM making a difference. And most importantly, I educate because my Ss need me. It's all about the kids—always. #tlap
A1: Oh I WISH I had my blog post finished for this question! Because even 280 characters isn’t enough! In short, I had 3 amazing teachers who changed my life and I want to #payitforward#bethewildcard#tlap#KidsDeserveIt
A1: I want to provide opportunities and experiences for my students that may not have certain opportunities. I love building and maintaining relationships with my kids long after they leave my classroom. #tlap#bethewildcard
A1: I want to make a difference in our world! It seems so sad and scary right now, but I see light when I watch my kids collaborate! #tlap#BeTheWildCard#setthestagetoengage
A1: Why? Because I know who I needed when I was a student, and I found that person in my teachers. I became an educator so that I ckjld help remind my kids that they are loved, supported, and worth it all. #tlap
A1: The first answer that comes to mind is... Why not? #tlap
If you have the talent to teach, if you can have that type of impact in the life of a child... why not?
A1: I've wanted to be a teacher since the fourth grade. One of my teachers was there for me in a difficult time and I knew I wanted to be a teacher and be that person for others. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1: It's my small little part of leaving the world 🌎 a little better! Teaching people they MATTER (which is more difficult than it sounds, because I also teach 😅) #tlap
A1 My Why is the students, doing what I need to do to make learning better, fun, different for them, my purpose is always focused around what is best for the Ss #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1: After 20 years, I still leap out of bed every day and can't WAIT to get to school to be with my people. Kids. Learning. Progress. Synergy. Innovative teachers. Imagining the future--and it looks great!! #TLAP
A1: What is my WHY for being an educator? I think every single one of my students deserves to have someone who knows that they will be great! No other profession has the opportunity to shape the future quite like education does! #tlap@burgessdave@MathWithMsHawes
The field of education allows you to lead, serve, and love. It is about relationships and influencing the future for the better. It is rewarding and I ❤️ what I do every day!! #TLAP#ssdpride#warriorscreate#JoinTogetherJanuary
#tlap A1: this one comes easy...because I GET to set my students up for the difference everyday! Disrupting thinking, solidifying basic skills, helping to develop socially...every day is different and even the “bad” days make a difference!
A1: My "why" is siphoning confidence and purpose into Ss academic lives. I see so many Ss that have ability but haven't heard anything positive from the educstional system. #tlap#KidsDeserveIt
A1: My “why” is about making a difference. The better the relationship, the greater the difference I can make for students, parents, staff and community. #tlap#bethewildcard
A1: My “why” is striving to make learning engaging and fun for all students. I want my students to WANT to come to school everyday! I want them to be excited about what is coming next. #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A1: To give a voice to the voiceless. To empower the last, the least, the lost & the last. To push the middle higher and to have the front runners not lose speed. I want to serve as a beacon of hope, encouragement, YES, and YET. #TLAP
A1: Standards and assessments will rarely (if ever) provide us with the motivation we need to overcome obstacles and plow through the challenges. Instead, I look to my students. My students' success and true love for learning will always be my motivation to be my daily best!
A1: having been an "invisible" S, I decided I would be one who stood between Ss & the edge of the abyss...a safety line connecting them, grounding them, letting them know they were seen, heard & of value...still here ~29 years later!! to make a DIFFERENCE #tlap#WildCard
A1b: as a parent myself, I see how relationships with Ts matter from multiple angles. Content can be found but relationships are lasting. That’s another WHY. Ss remember their Ts #tlap
Someone saw potential in me. Picked me up, dusted me off, pulled potential out of me, and spoke truth over my life. I want to do that for Ss! I want to see the potential others can't see and often times Ss can't see. #tlap
I want the best for Children, to learn & grow with them. It’s up to me to provide the best environment & opportunities for children #TLAP#kidsdeserveit#bethewildcard
A1: I became an educator in '95 in order to be a difference maker in the lives of kids. I always loved working with children and teaching came naturally. I have grown so much over the years in my pedagogy and philosophy. I see Ss through a new lens each year. #tlap#bethewildcard
A1: My “why” is that I want to inspire students and push them to be their best. I want them to have an adult who is always in their corner cheering for them and supporting them. #TLAP
My why is to empower students to realize the greatness that is within. They have so much potential and can do great things. They just need someone to believe in them and help them to realize the greatness that is within #tlap
A1 My only enemy is ignorance. I like to learn. Also, as a child, I once saw 3 teachers come out of office with peals of laughter among them. What could possibly be that funny? Now I know. #tlap
A1: My why is always my kids. In the classroom, sponsoring a class/club, etc. I want my kids to know I'm a teacher for them. My goal is to make American History the best class possible :) #tlap
A1: to erase the stigma and break the cycles that students are “born” into. To help them gain the skills and confidence to achieve their dreams. #tlap#bethewildcard
A1: My why is because all kids deserve an adult they know cares about them and wants them to succeed. Since having my own kids, I want to be the teacher I want my kiddos to have some day’ #tlap
Yes! I am only in my third year of teaching, but I am longing for the day when I have a student who emails me back and lets me know that I actually made a positive difference in their life! #TLAP
A1: I look at my students. I look at who they are when they come in my classroom and who they are when they leave. I want to be the thing that changes them, that helps students be success and have a true love for learning! This motivates me to be my daily best! #tlap
A1: I want to make difference in the lives of kids like my 5th grade teacher Mrs. Trusler did for me. She took an interest in me and made me feel like I mattered. Life changing! #tlap
Love hearing all of these strong "Why" answers from the #tlap crew tonight! It fortifies you and makes you relentless in the pursuit of transforming lives. #BeTheWildCard
A1: My Why: I want my students to have someone in their corner at all times, to feel loved and to be offered a high level of education no matter the cards they’ve been dealt. I want to make an impact in the place I grew up and the school I attended as a child #tlap
A1: My why for beings educator is to reach that one S others couldn’t, to help a S in that moment they truly need it. If I can get other Ts going my direction, then it’s a good day. #tlap
Q 1: my why... I’ve always loved school and being with kids. I have always had a passion to help others. I thought I was going to help others in the medical field, but God had bigger plans. #tlap
my "why" is that students are our future and I want to help shape the future. I love kids and learn from them every day. they deserve the best that we can give them. #tlap#bethewildcard
A1: I knew that @hopekingteach would BRING IT w/ the Q’s & #1 is already a gooder! My why? I teach to fulfill goals & visions for what I hope for our world. I teach to ensure that kids are hearing that they matter, that they can do anything and that kindness will always win #tlap
A1: There’s something about helping shape the future of the world, even if it’s just one S... if I make a difference, it could mean a world of difference to that one S! #conversechat#tlap
A1 My why is to be R.E.A.L. & make R.E.A.L. connections w/ those I serve no matter my role.
R. Relatable
E. Expose Vulnerability
A. Always approachable

#tlap
My teaching WHY is relationships and leaving a legacy! You can teach curriculum all day, but knowing a child and having a connections makes an unbeatable impression! #tlap
A1: My "why" is exactly that: I KNOW I can make a difference. I KNOW I can be that teacher who changes the trajectory of a kid's life. Everyone needs someone like that at some point in their life and everyday I try to be that person. #tlap
#tlap A1: To help Ss find their paths in life and to give them many opportunities to experience the real-world. It’s time to change or rewrite the curriculum to focus on the Ss, not molding the Ss to fit the curriculum.
#tlap My why: For the "Adrians" When I asked my class what they were most excited about in 2018, his response: "my mom gets out of prison and I get to see her" I do it for the relationships with the students that endure far more than I could ever imagine.
A1: I want to make difference in the lives of kids like my 5th grade teacher Mrs. Trusler did for me. She took an interest in me and made me feel like I mattered. Life changing! #tlap
A1: The Kids! I always wanted to make an impact in their lives and promote lifelong learning like my teachers did for me growing up but I think my kids impact my life daily just as much! #tlap
I just ran into this precious & talented 6th grader from last year @HumbleISD_RCE. He ran up to me & gave me the biggest hug! “I WAS YOUR SIMBA!” It made my 💛 explode! To know I made an impression on him, like he has on me, is my why. #KidsDeserveIt#theatrekid@HumbleISD
Someone saw potential in me. Picked me up, dusted me off, pulled potential out of me, and spoke truth over my life. I want to do that for Ss! I want to see the potential others can't see and often times Ss can't see. #tlap
A1: My why always goes back to my Ss... meeting them where they are at and empowering them to find their passions and blow the top off their learning! #TLAP#Nan3EDU
A1: I wasn't always sure that I could make it through senior year. I knew I could be compliant and touch my chin to my chest repetitively and smile. I lacked confidence in my abilities in comparison to others. I think this drives my WHY today in the classroom. I'm here. #tlap
A1: My WHY is to challenge the minds of the students I teach in a creative and fun way. Every student deserves to have someone on their side in their cheer section. #tlap
A1Hi! I'm watching Bama and that othe team play! I'm an educator because I want kids to know someone cares. Makes the world better and me better! #TLAP
A1: It started because I wanted to walk in my dad's footsteps and became a real desire to make a difference. Not just in academic life but in how my students think about the world. To help them find their path. #tlap
A1: I want to inspire my Ss to take risks and empower them to be strong individuals. I want Ss to know that they will always have someone who will encourage and support them #tlap#bethewildcard
I want students to love school. I want them to know that school is just not a place to go and learn. Math is a very difficult subject for some students and I want them to be very confident when they leave my class. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1 My why is to be R.E.A.L. & make R.E.A.L. connections w/ those I serve no matter my role.

Inspired by all these whys. They solidify that I am on the right path and are bringing tears of joy to my eyes. I can relate to so many of these statements. Keep on being #edurockstars. #tlap
A1: My why is summed up in our @TME_tigers shared WHY (aka vision). I want to work every day to show my Ts & Ss that I BELIEVE in them even when they don't believe in themselves. Be the change that I want to see in the 🌎! #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A1: I want to inspire Ss to be the best they can possibly even when others don’t believe in them. While I want them to love French, its more important that they leave my room knowing I truly care about them. #tlap#bethewildcard
A1: My why is because all kids deserve an adult they know cares about them and wants them to succeed. Since having my own kids, I want to be the teacher I want my kiddos to have some day’ #tlap
Howdy #tlap A1: After 34 years, my WHY is still to be passionately joyful for my school family, to help people understand that they matter, that they belong. To connect and inspire. To teach them to show #kindness. It's the BEST calling ever.
A1: My why is to reach as many Ss as possible and let them know they can learn no matter how difficult it can be and to show them how to love learning.

#tlap I just love working w/ Ss and teaching them to love themselves, believe in themselves, and invest in themselves! It’s great seeing Ss be happy with just themselves!
Shakespeare has a quote that I love to use, "There is no darkness except for ignorance." Everyday we are the force of light against the darkness! #tlap
A1b the love and acceptance I got from teacher regardless of who I was or what I was doing gave me a desire to be of service to others in the same capacity #TLAP
A1: Im changing the future one encounter at a time. My students’ futures, their families’ futures, on and on FOREVER. This profession is unlike any other. The ripples are eternal. This is my why. #tlap#BeTheWildCard@burgessdave@WadeKing7

Teaching is a huge logic problem- and I love a challenging logic problem- looking at clues and trying to figure out how they fit together- and changing the game plan because of those clues #tlap
A1 to be a person my students count on to be there, to cheer for successes, support during failures, push them to achieve more- the things I wanted as a child #TLAP
A1 Why do I teach? I teach so I can change Ss lives for the better. It is no exaggeration to say that I truly believe the 📚📝🗣🤔 skills I teach daily can empower my students to have every and any door of opportunity open to them in their futures! #tlap
Relationships make the difference! Being purposeful & intentionally in the classroom and in the hallways. Kids know you care about them before you utter a word. #tlap
A1: I teach because it makes me feel whole. I know that everyday and every year I will make a long lasting impact on a child's life. My choice to become an ELA educator was to help close the achievement gap and help students reach their goals.
#tlap#bethewildcard
A1-Inspired by Ts who changed my life for the better, I hoped to have positive impact. 10 years later, the same..but also the spark-that love of learning-that sense of ownership and empowerment you can see on faces...and of course, the #relationships#tlap#BeTheWildCard
I want students to love school. I want them to know that school is just not a place to go and learn. Math is a very difficult subject for some students and I want them to be very confident when they leave my class. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1) Gliding in to answer, sorry Im late, Spiri from PA ... I love Learning, exploring, doing, questioning, creating, love kids, it all makes me happy 😍😊❤️ #tlap
A1- My why is the kids, they are my motivation every single day! I cherish the small moments in our class, and having the chance to make the happy to be at school! #tlap
A1: (2) my why is also in the relationships built. When my Ss make me drawings, tell me about their weekend, come up to me in a store to say hello, I know that they carry me with them just as much as I carry them with me. #tlap
A2: The biggest barrier is often a mindset of "good enough" or "we have always done it this way." CRUSH Complacency! Stomp the Status Quo! Overcome Obstacles! Bash Barriers! #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A2: Self-doubt! It is a HUGE blessing to be surrounded by incredibly gifted educators. It can also make you question your own abilities. I have learned to set aside my pride and ask for help and feedback.Collaboration has created a huge support system. #tlap
What do you do when you spend hours preparing a #HookChallenge et.al. for your @SlackwoodSchool T mtg. and then after school mtgs are cancelled bc of weather? Challenge them anyway! #tlap#LeadLAP
A2: Biggest has been Ss asking me: "Why do I need to know this?" It's not only showing "why" is it important, but how and what it is about it that makes it important. I have had more of that barrier than any other. #tlap
A1: My why: I never connected to teachers and felt distant. I was going to build relationships with students and show them that they mattered more than just getting a grade #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1: I want to inspire Ss to be the best they can possibly even when others don’t believe in them. While I want them to love French, its more important that they leave my room knowing I truly care about them. #tlap#bethewildcard
A2: Excuses! You can’t make excuses when our kids’ education and future is on the line. Show off what you’re doing, despite the odds, to boost others around you #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1: Starting off my "why" was my parents and all of the amazing educators I was raised by (and around). But, then I saw a student's lightbulb moment for the first time. That "Ah ha" 💡moment is now my why. I love for those moments. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1: My WHY in the classroom today's driven by the WHO I was while sitting on "the other side of the desk" in the 80s. The teachers I remember most fondly are those who really "saw" me in the room. Seeing manifest in "Hello." They made me visible. And I am grateful to them. #tlap
A1: My WHY…my nieces and nephew. I want to be the kind of teacher that I want them to have. Each one with their own set of unique characteristics, but so deserving of a teacher who will see their potential and focus on the positives. #tlap
A2: So far, my biggest barrier has been negativity surrounding the field. As a pre-service teacher, I am enthusiastic about the future and want to make school a safe and fun environment for my Ss. I will give 110 % to make that happen. Twitter chats help me overcome this. #tlap
A2: One of the biggest barriers is time. I love working on ways to help people do more than they thought they could with their time (and love discovering the same for myself)! #TLAP#BeTheWildCard
A1: My "why" is that we have a responsibility to the children of our future. We must prepare them to be thinkers, doers, innovators, collaborators. Kids need champions. Rather than asking why, ask..."Why not us?" Let us all be champions of our future..our students! #tlap
A2: The biggest barrier is building the capacity for change. This is the first year my district has had instructional coaches so working to build relationships w/ Ts & share out any and all ways we can help! #tlap
I found that for teachers fear is the biggest barrier. Fear of judgement. Fear of failure. Fear of ___ fill it in w/ yours. In the last year, after visiting @ronclarkacademy I learned how to teach more fearlessly and it has paid off more than I ever could have imagined!! #tlap
A2: Always having enough resources can be a challenge. However, working and collaborating with great educators can overcome this obstacle! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A1 My “Why” is that some teachers brought out the best in me as a kid and some did major damage by being terrible. I want to be 1 more difference maker who brings out the best in kids! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A2: I’ve often pushed boundaries of learning- I rocked the pirate ship- some didn’t like that. Through tenacity & remembering everything I was doing was for the kids. It was the catalyst to continue to rock the ship- and make change! #tlap
A1: My "why" is devoting 100% of every day & ounce of energy that I have proving to kids that I believe in them, even when they don't believe in themselves. #tlap
A2-my only barrier is myself. Don’t ever give up. If you believe in it make it happen. If it doesn’t work the first time try a different way. Believe enough in what you want that you do what it takes to make it happen. #tlap
A2: My biggest barrier has been fear of failure. I've tried to overcome it by embracing the fact that even if I fail, at least I have learned how to better teach! When my brain says "No" I am trying to say "Yes!" #tlap@ERobbPrincipal@KGT_Educator@misskoplin@MathWithMsHawes
A2: Parental engagement- if they can’t come to you- go to them. Home visits, soccer games, making that first interaction a positive one.#tlap#bethewildcard
A2: As a principal, the biggest challenge is ensuring everyone is contributing to the forward movement of the ship. As @ronclarkacademy says, runners are great unless they’re going in the wrong direction! #tlap
A2 Lack of innovation, $, people will to transform and take risks. I have found virtual/global collaborators, a PLN on Twitter that supports/encourages me to go further. I model transformation to help encourage others to try. No excuses, no matter what. #tlap#bethewildcard
A2 I think helping teachers and leaders take on an innovator's mindset is always a challenge for systems. We've got awesome gamified PD to help! #tlap#fcslevelup
A2: Always having enough resources can be a challenge. However, working and collaborating with great educators can overcome this obstacle! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A2: School today looks different than school did for our student’s parents. Getting parents on board with a learning environment that is different than their experience can sometimes be challenging. #tlap
A2: The biggest barrier in our system is the amount of freedom we have. It is a blessing. Being able to create lessons that are magical is fantastic, but always having to amp up your lessons because you want something new for the kids is very challenging. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A2: at one time it was resources...so creatively navigated by purchasing my own, sought out grants, donors etc. #tlap#BeTheWildCard now it is time...so I am working on intentionally planning and wisely deciding what to say no to :)
A2: The biggest barrier is the lack of resources and technology. To overcome this, I wrote grants and have created a 1:1 classroom for my students because they deserve this. #tlap#bethewildcard
A1 Laura Watkins. 4th grade in MO, primarily ELA. I have many Whys, but right now my why is watching the pure joy of a child when they get matched to the perfect book they may have been searching for for quite sometime. The connections is priceless. #tlap
A2: The biggest barriers are those who don't support change & fight against it, & my own questions of if I'm capable. I've decided that it doesn't matter though- if it's right for my kids, it's happening (or I'll try my best). They deserve it. #kidsdeserveit#tlap
A2: The biggest barrier is often a mindset of "good enough" or "we have always done it this way." CRUSH Complacency! Stomp the Status Quo! Overcome Obstacles! Bash Barriers! #BeTheWildCard#tlap
“That is the way we have always done it” or “I have taught this lesson for 20 years”. I try to help staff pump up their favorite old lessons and show them how can engage the students more. #tlap
A2 My district operates under the credo "but we've always done it that way" So I am the renegade and have set my own course based on what the kids NEED #tlap
A2: a fixed mindset! There are so many people who are not willing to take chances, get creative and try new things for their kids because they are stuck with a “this is how it’s always been done” mindset #TLAP#BeTheWildCard
Sometimes the biggest barriers can be other Ts, curriculum, etc. I try to do what I know is best for kids. Even if that means I'm the "cheese that stands alone." Ss first. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A2: Our biggest hurdle is trusting one another enough to be vulnerable, to risk, to innovate and fall forward. We won't get gritty if we're too cautious. We ARE ready to grow together, to take chances, to reach higher, together! #bethewildcard#tlap
A2: the biggest barrier is lack of parental support. I have worked to create relationships with my students, and I have even set up a special dinner for parents/guardians to come meet me and my family as well. I continue to try and build a rapport with Ss and parents #tlap
A2 I think the biggest barrier is often a mindset of complacency or compliance.
If we (as administration) truly empower those we serve--they would unleash their EDUawesomeness!
Just sayin...
#tlap
A2 I think grades and grading systems are the single biggest block; I’ve proposed portfolio learning in replacement for traditional grades / it will be awhile #tlap
A2: Our biggest barrier is ourselves. There's always a way with every situation. I really do believe that. Think differently then achieve differently. #TLAP
A2: Rusty hinges haha When people are so stuck in their ways they moan and groan at the slightest adjustments. Sometimes it gets so annoying that we move around them or just give up. #tlap I wish they had some WD-40 for that lol
A2: students will make mistakes. When I started teaching, I would get very aggravated with mistakes. Now, in my 8th year, I celebrate the students who are struggling! I know this is my opportunity to teach and they have so much room to grow! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A2: Sometimes the status quo is our biggest barrier. We reimagined our PD last year and pushed toward an EdCamp style. It was WONDERFUL!
Here’s what we did: https://t.co/6HFHll99p1#TLAP#BeTheWildCard
A2 Ss and Ts developing a growth mindset. We have been persistent at creating a culture where risk and learning is important for adults and over time our staff has done a great job of embracing it and challenging themselves #TLAP
A2: School today looks different than school did for our student’s parents. Getting parents on board with a learning environment that is different than their experience can sometimes be challenging. #tlap
A2: TIME. Always pressed for time. Plenty of resources, just not enough hours in the day to work with them all and get them all in the curriculum. #tlap
A2. I would say fear is the biggest barrier. Fear of change, fear of failure, fear of risk. I try to always do what I believe will be best for my Ss, even if it makes me uncomfortable. It’s about them, not me. #tlap
A2: Time is the biggest barrier. There are always threats to it, and outright theft of it. But if you guard it like a miser, it drips from your fingers anyway. You've got to dance in the moments you have - plan it, be present for it, and find the rhythm that matters most. #tlap
A1: My why: Being able to work collaboratively with creative and enthusiastic educators that show up and make an everlasting impact on our students. #tlap#BetheWildCard
A2 Meetings...often 3 or 4 days each week! We are working to overcome this through meaningful conversations with admin, prioritizing, and drinking plenty of coffee! #tlap#bethewildcard
Craig from Janesville, WI joining late. I teach 8th grade school science. A1: My why was the impact a coach and teacher had on me. I desire to have that type of positive impact on students. #tlap
A2: I want to say morale. It’s easy to fall into the pit of complaining and I try to steer clear of it. Gotta reach down and find/make your own sunshine. #tlap#bethewildcard
A2: My biggest barrier is fear and myself, fear of the unknown, making the wrong choice. That's why this year my #oneword is FEARLESS. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A2: Lack of positivity and reflection. It’s never about what has happened as the teacher, more about lack of skill/will on Ss part. Struggles to try different and engage ideas. I just keep my head high & practice what I believe is best for kids. #tlap
I fight self doubt by reminding myself that our school has the best educators that will support me and each other. That reduces the anxiety of this BIG job! We are not alone. #TLAP#DFL
A2 so many hurdles. Took me awhile to bring my passion into the classroom and focus on what’s important. Everything else fades. @burgessdave and TLAP helped give me the permission I needed to do so. #tlaphttps://t.co/E78rYmmiAu#Thankful
Move over Peace Corps - EDUCATION is the hardest job you’ll ever love. PUSH through the struggles and the what you experience in the other side is amazingly awesome. #TLAP
A2: The biggest barrier often can be time and deciding priorties through the day. I have worked hard to try and plot out days, be intentional with S relationships, and ask myself what can wait till Ss leave the building #tlap
A2: FEAR of CHANGE! I am determined to be A CHANGE AGENT! I lead by example and hope to eliminate the unknown by bringing it to the front of education! #tlap#Nan3EDU
A2: Lack of resources. I make a lot of my own stuff now, and I have realized you don't have to have ALL THE THINGS to be a great teacher. #bethewildcard#tlap
A2 Biggest hurdle has been finding like-minded people to push, encourage, and support me. Moving from elementary to middle has been an experience! Negativity is a contagious virus - inoculate yourself! @ClaireRoehl@ECUcrystalECU@Barwick4thgrade@Southerland4th#TLAP
A2: biggest barrier is not all Ts operate on the same page. Personalities, philosophies, styles vary which makes it difficult for Ss. Relationships are not always formed which makes learning/growing more difficult #tlap
A2: Isn't it time?!? There's never enough time for "this" or "we don't have enough time to do those things." Or "I don't have enough time to plan stuff like you." Just do it! Trust the process. Trust the RESEARCH. #tlap
A2: Establishing clear priorities and the ability to do less better. My barrier used to be cannons...but my ship is strong enough to withhold criticism thanks to the #tlap crew. #gamechanger
A2: it's so easy to be held back by self doubt. It's important that the doubt doesn't stop me from taking risks. My team, friends and coworkers, and Twitter PLN helps me reflect and encourages me when I might be on the fence. #tlap
A2. My biggest barrier was breast cancer last year and not much time with my kids. After surgery & my last day of RADS last month -
The other stuff just doesn’t seem like much of a barrier💗. Blessed with great colleagues, Amazing parents of my Amazing kids /❤️ my school! #tlap
A2: The biggest barrier is the status quo. Change all at once is difficult for many. So I have made small changes every day, every week, every month, every year to get culture moving in a new direction. #tlap#bethewildcard
A2: FEAR of CHANGE! I am determined to be A CHANGE AGENT! I lead by example and hope to eliminate the unknown by bringing it to the front of education! #tlap#Nan3EDU
The biggest barrier for me is having to work multiple jobs to earn enough income. The more duties I take on, the less I can focus on being the best teacher our students need #tlap
#tlap
A2: Outside demands. Whether they are government or district mandates, they can be like anchors on your momentum and class culture. I make them as fun as possible and try to minimize their impact in my room... and I am honest with the kids about why we have/need them. #tlap
A1: My “why” is to make learning magical for students so that they discover their passions and are empowered to make their dreams a reality. #tlap#bethewildcard
A2: A big barreir is hyperfocusing on grades & GPAs. Oftentimes, I'm asked "How many points is this worth? How will this affect my grade?" I understand those concerns, but it gets in the way of learning. I remind Ss that they can succeed & offer help. #tlap
A2. My biggest barrier in education is myself. Not comparing myself, abilities, strengths, my Ss, limiting myself, etc. I worked[working] to overcome it by surrounding myself with dreamers, doers, encouragers, people like @BlueHazeWSISD. Find people who see the best in you! #tlap
A2 Time is a barrier, and I'm sure my district is not alone. Engagement and technology are my loves, my passion, so I make time, but sometimes other things suffer. #GiveAndTake#tlap
A2: The biggest barrier USED to be my excuses. There were always reasons why something wasn’t working or wouldn’t work. Now, that’s no longer an obstacle. #AlwaysALearner#tlap
the negativity also happens to veterans and it's easy to forget that it's just another swing of the pendulum, more or different hoops that we have to jump through. What keeps me in - the students. Every day I wake up ready to embrace the Ss. #tlap
#tlap#tlap A2: Time is my biggest barrier! Intentional, purposeful planning and prioritizing have helped me....it's a work in progress every day! (caffeine helps too)
A2: my biggest obstacle is always either self-doubt or fear to rock the boat. I start with big (crazy) ideas and then talk myself out of them because I know they will draw attention. Plus "what if" that attention is because of a big fail. #tlap #BeTheWildCard
A2: I’m the past... my biggest barrier was self doubt! I’m my worst critic & didn’t give myself enough credit! I’ve really evolved into believing in myself! Still have some struggles but continually working on embracing my success & learning from my mistakes! #tlap
A2: The biggest barriers are Time, paperwork, and state assessments. I have overcome them by being planned and prepared to use each minute. I also make sure to keep my family time because they come first #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A2: not having a lot of curriculum freedom ... I just work to make the curriculum I’m given meaningful & engaging. I also earn the trust of my admin to give me freedom when needed #tlap
A1: 1 Barrier has been lots of new initiatives all at once-not sure what is going to stick and what to focus on-I just teach and do what is best for my kids and everything else falls into place eventually. Programs/curriculum come and go, but good teaching is good teaching #tlap
A2: it's so easy to be held back by self doubt. It's important that the doubt doesn't stop me from taking risks. My team, friends and coworkers, and Twitter PLN helps me reflect and encourages me when I might be on the fence. #tlap
A2: Biggest barrier is people’s fear: of the unknown, taking risks & being uncomfy. I try to model, support & preach it. #workinprogress#tlap#bethewildcard
A2- biggest barrier is the “yeah, but”
When forging ahead, there is always someone with that would rather focus on why something can’t be done instead of the how. #tlap
I think the biggest barrier to education today is the system! Teachers should just be allowed to get on witth teaching and not teaching for tests! #tlap
A2: P2: My teammates asked me not to do Shark Bait chat I learned at RCA because it was “too loud,” still trying to figure out how to do it differently, but those kinds of things have definitely been challenges #tlap
A2:My biggest barrier is negativity. I try to overcome it by staying out of gossip, drama, and focusing on my kids. I always try to always find the positive!!!#BeTheWildCard#tlap
A2) My biggest barrier is time. I try to be very aware and stay up to date with the most efficient and engaging ways to teach my kiddos everything they need to be successful writers, students and members of the community around them. #tlap
A2: Time. I hear it all the time and struggle with it myself. The bottom line is we have time for what we make time for. It’s all about priorities. If you want to grow your PLN and learn from others, you will make time for it. #tlap#kidsdeserveit
A2. Biggest barrier Ss not believing in themselves. I work 1:1 w/ them to get them to say"I can do it!"" Until they grow the confidence to work independently on projects and activites. #tlap
Yeah, I originally just used twitter to talk about what was happening in my class. I had a PLN of 47 in September. Then I started to realize the benefits! #tlap
A2 Focus on testing instead of growth of the child, where that child is today, the needs of the individual child. I try to overcome by helping my students block off the distraction of SOL talk and focusing on the journey they are on and the milestones they are making. #TLAP
We discuss kids’ reluctance to learn bc fear cripples@them but rarely spend time in educators who also are fearful. Everyone needs a dose of courage and a boost of confidence. #TLAP
A2: I would say complacency and excuses. Our admin team practices #AllKidsAreOurKids and we work on Owning our own averages. We are not perfect...but we are working on it. #tlap#bethewildcard
Myself & self doubt. But if you want to try something, just do it. I basically don’t ask for permission from my admin, because they are unfortunately disengaged. I overcame these barriers by connecting with twitter #PLN#bethewikdcard#kidsdeserveit#tlap
A2: One of the biggest barriers can be my own self doubt. Surrounding myself with people who have the same vision and encourage me help tremendously! My PLN on Twitter and Instagram are awesome! #tlap
However, you OWNED, Melisa! You still innovated and tried new things with your Ss. You were relentless, girl. You KICKED breast cancer's A&$!
And your Ss are ROCKIN' #BookSnaps 'ers, too. #tlap
A2. My biggest barrier was breast cancer last year and not much time with my kids. After surgery & my last day of RADS last month -
The other stuff just doesn’t seem like much of a barrier💗. Blessed with great colleagues, Amazing parents of my Amazing kids /❤️ my school! #tlap
Balance. I used to work like my job was everything.I wanted to be the best I could be for my Ss.I lost a lot of time that I can’t get back. Now I’vebeen able to call a days end, & invest in both my own personal&professional. This has helped me actually bring more to my@job! #tlap
A2: Self-doubt mixed with “you don’t know what you don’t know”. To combat, share with staff (PD) and support colleagues when they have a seed idea— help them grow it! #tlap
A2 Hmm, for me time seems 2 b the barrier. I feel if I just had more planning time I could bring more magic, collaboration, or go bigger w a lesson. 2 combat that I've tried to learn &reflect from previous lessons so I don't rethink parts of a lesson that worked well! #tlap
A2: A big barrier is the focus on scores instead of the whole child; Ss have so many talents and gifts that don’t fit in a “box”. I would love to see them shine! #tlap
A2: I’ve seen it said a few times but definitely the status quo. A lot of people are very comfortable with how they do things and are just so opposed to change! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A2b the status quo is still a big barrier it can be overcome with high consistent standard and encouraging risk and letting Ts and Ss know failing forward is how we improve #TLAP
So I'm thinking that @alicekeeler suggestion of opening 2 #tlap columns on tweetdeck is the only way I can read any of these great answer. One to run the tweets and one to stop and read @burgessdave
A2: Time! For planning, within the school day, and for being present as a wife and mom. It’s always hard to prioritize in a way that ensures everyone gets the best I can offer! #TLAP
A2: A relentless pursuit of envisioning what can be if we can just agree to be uncomfortable, take risks, and go all in takes enormous passion & vision. How it has always been is no where on our path to greatness. No room for mediocrity. #letsdothis#BeTheWildCard#tlap
A2: The biggest barrier is me. I had to change my vision, my purpose & my mindset to become the teacher I am today. I have to persevere, to continue to learn, to strive for excellence, to be kind. If I don’t put the work in or if I focus on the negative, my kids & I suffer. #tlap
A2: biggest barrier is SSW time/days being taken from my students and school. Trying to overcome by bring resourceful and learning even more restorative practice skills, etc to support our students who are most at-risk. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A2:The biggest barrier is the fear of change. We must be willing to take risks and empower students with their learning. We can't "do school" like it always has been done. We must meet students where they are, encourage their passions and don't settle for the status quo. #tlap
A2: Trying to inspire innovation within fear of change, fear of failure. We had to open doors, open eyes! We are surrounded by greatness, we just need oppprtunities to see it! Experience it! @BlueHazeWSISD#tlap#bethewildcard
True! So great when we can work with Ts to show them how to consolidate tasks and free up more TIME to try the things they want w/Ss! #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A2: Parental involvement at the middle school level. We are working to overcome it by creating programs and activities that give them strategies that they can employ at home to engage in academic content with their child/children. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
I have gotten much better with communicating how my classroom runs and WHY I made certain choices. Involving them in some of the optional enrichment activities allows them to see how the class structure encourages students to drive and own their learning. #tlap
A2. Biggest barrier to education - Isolation. As an educator and a life-long learner I am dedicated to building a diverse personal learning network embracing the importance of diversity. #tlap
A2: Tough one. Let's just say Ss need to know you genuinely CARE & you truly BELIEVE in them. If you have that, then 9 times out of 10 you have real buy-in to your system, whether it is coaching or teaching, & THAT can overcome almost any barrier #tlap
A2: #tlap Resources! I currently work in a school with a fabulous, generous PTA who funds and supports our every move, but not all communities have that. kids from ALL communities deserve it. I have overcome it by begging and borrowing and making sure I am my best self everyday!
A2: I think the biggest barrier is time. I love trying new things, but finding the time to do it all is difficult at times. I am learning to ask for help and to say “no” at times. #tlap#bethewildcard
A2 Right now I think it is time to try all the new wonderful things that being introduced. Sometimes I fear that even though the programs, apps, etc. are very good, I may be sacrificing quality of instruction by not specializing in a few. #TLAP
#TLAP A2: Meet families where they are, welcome them, no barriers! We found social media filled with posts of classrooms and school happenings opened doors! Everything is shared in both languages! They love seeing their kiddos in action!
A2: Time! There are so many things to get done that it’s frustrating when I don’t get to spend quality time in classrooms. Making time for that is always the priority. #tlap
A2 teaching in a silo, this year I'm co-teaching at the 2 sites I support, while not perfect, Ts are starting to see how much more we can do, 1+1 does not equal 2 in this arrangement #tlap
A2: Finding time to collaborate with other teachers and seeing the amazing things they do. Hoping to start a once a month networking group starting in January. #tlap
A2: the fluff...all the extra stuff that is added to our plates that is time taken away from going deeper in the learning with my kids and not what is best for kids #tlap@burgessdave@hopekingteach@WadeKing7#BeTheWildCard
A2: A huge barrier can also be our own perceptions of our students. What do we see when we look at them? Do we see EACH of them as unique, talented, and amazing? If not... we should! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A3: I have always been a crafter (aka hands-on) learner. STEAM related activities and room transformations are my go-tos to bring a concept to life! I may not always be able to take my students into the real world, so I bring the real world to our classroom! #bethewildcard#tlap
@hopekingteach the biggest barrier is lack of support (legislature, financial, parents, central office, etc).....you overcome it by being resilient and finding another way. you have to be creative and meet students as well as adults where they are..... #tlap#bethewildcard
A1: I want to inspire Ss to be the best they can possibly even when others don’t believe in them. While I want them to love French, its more important that they leave my room knowing I truly care about them. #tlap#bethewildcard
Biggest barrier was being told that students wouldn't get involved in my class simulations or I was doing too much. Five years later and I continue to find new simulations/projects to add into my curriculum! #tlap
A2: finding funds to bring dreams life. Sought out donors that wanted to help and built relationships with people outside of education. #bethewildcard#tlap#setthestagetoengage
A2: Fear of failure is mine too! I’ve grown on the “Informing everyone of new and risky techniques and the fact that it might fail but I will persevere and continue to try new extraordinary things!” But it’s still scary! #conversechat#tlap
A2: As a principal, the biggest challenge is ensuring everyone is contributing to the forward movement of the ship. As @ronclarkacademy says, runners are great unless they’re going in the wrong direction! #tlap
#tlap A2: Getting people to realize that even though we have always done it this way, doesn’t mean that it’s still the right path for today’s Ss. We have to be ready to make changes and adapt the curriculum to fit the career choices and interests of our Ss.
A2-For me, the biggest barrier is currently time. There's so much I want to do...and never enough! Negativity is also a challenge. But bottom line...it's about the kids! Focus on maximizing their potential. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#kidsdeserveit
A3: My “ACE” is marketing. The power of being able to communicate your ideas. I use this to enhance my instruction by getting students to partake in discourse with one another about phenomena. #tlap#bethewildcard
A3: Love co-creating experiences with learners. They identify their interests and passions and we find a way to attach it to standards and learning objectives. #tlap
A2: Biggest barrier is “standardizing” everything. Sucks joy & passion out of teaching & learning. Trying to help Ts feel safe to take risks & understand we are #bettertogether#tlap#bethewildcard
A2: Love all of the responses in regard to "initiatives." Too many of these at once can lead to one of the greater professional ironies: "One more initiative and I am going to stop (fill in the blank here). Reflection on Stop/Renew Cycle seems to help me with these feels. #tlap
Balance. I used to work like my job was everything.I wanted to be the best I could be for my Ss.I lost a lot of time that I can’t get back. Now I’vebeen able to call a days end, & invest in both my own personal&professional. This has helped me actually bring more to my@job! #tlap

A2: The biggest barriers in our system are the usuals...testing, box curriculum etc. However, I feel we are fortunate enough to have flexibility. Our school works together through PLCs to better instruction and engagement for all students. #tlap
A2: the biggest barrier is changing the mindset to encompass more ideas that actually help students, not punish. I have worked to find a PLN that supports what I am trying to do. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Reminds me of the Coach Lambeau quote:
We will strive for perfection, knowing full well we will never attain it, but in the process we will find excellence. #tlap
A2: biggest barrier time , and at one point negative nellies. So lucky to have people now who push you to push boundaries and do what's best for kids- this is why we are here ! #TLAP#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Yes! I just really enjoy learning and talking with other people about education! Especially since most of the people I talk to on Twitter about it are incredibly passionate about it like me! #TLAP
A3 my Ace is my sense of humor and enthusiasm for building relationships. I use it to show people that they matter and school should be and can be fun. #TLAP
A3: I have used my ace -- my love of baseball -- to model what questioning and inquiry is all about, and to show how good questioning is not located within one academic discipline but is cress-disciplinary. #tlap
A2 4 me a barrier is the word “busy” How much do we as ts, ask of ss, just to appear/feel needed... stay busy. If we all stepped back to listen more instead of talk, we might see where/how/when/why to mentor, model and be more mindful. We are often our own barriers. #tlap
A3: My love of reading and books, I get so excited when students ask me for recommendations. It is a drop everything moment and I think it gets them excited too. #tlap
A2: I think my biggest barrier overall is time. I try to set short-term goals (and alarms) for myself every day to tackle #onesmallthing at a time. I also keep track of long-term goals in @GoogleKeep so I don’t forget! #TLAP
A2: Time is a big barrier for me. There never seems to be enough of it. One of my goals this year is to make the most of my time! Self-doubt can be a barrier too. It’s always good to take a risk and make changes! #tlap
A3: The ability to always relate what I teach, #busedu to students and make it exciting! Also, finding time to let students practice soft skills in a fun way! #tlap
A3: I try to bring my personality into the classroom. I am thinking of creating a class twitter page next year due to that being my ace. I also love music, so I may try to incorporate that as well. Ss need to see that teachers are human too. #tlap
A3: I love all the things. Harry Potter, superheroes, Pokémon, and I love finding out what my kids are into (this year it's been DogMan). If you can find a way to use their interests (plus your own) in a lesson, you've got them! Their faces when they realize it- the bet. #tlap
A3: I use my ace to build strong, authentic relationships with my students- which allows me to increase my impact & help my Ss connect to the learning on a deeper level. #tlap#thewildcard#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A3: My ace is probably my passion an for making school fun and my ability to outwork others so it runs hand in hand with exactly what we want for our kids - Making school amazing and learning fun #tlap
A3 Put the focus on kids. Create learning adventures, create authentic experiences that break all barriers. Show kids, that excuses & limits can be overcome. Make it all about kindness, making a difference! Make it about celebrating! Be every child's ACE! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A3 My ace is the ability to communicate Each day we are working together on some form of communication Its vital Ss have the verbal, written, & listening #tlap
A3 My Ace is adapting and trying anything new in technology. This year, we are new to GC, but I dove right in and love it. Love new apps and finding ways to integrate in a quality way. #tlap
A3: I play sports and roller skate. The Ss appreciate when I attend their events and when I relate Math topics to their interests as well as my own #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A3: I consider #gamification and #sketchnotes to be my aces bc they've helped me change my classroom into a more interactive and S centered environment. My sense of humor and ability to laugh at myself are also quite handy (like when I ripped my pants in class 😂) #tlap
My Ace is my love for making and tinkering and I bring that to my classes in weird ways, made an interactive name tag that asks Q's using a Microbit, Ss answer with button pushes, then I show how easy it is to code their own #tlap
A3: I have always loved hands-in learning. STEAM related activities, technology integration, and room transformations are my go-tos to bring a concept to life! I want to always make sure my students know "why" we are learning this! #tlap
Less comparison and more examining how each of us brings a different gift to education. TOGETHER we are rad and unstoppable. Our vulnerabilities are made okay though the support in our buildings and devising PLNs. #TLAP
A2 I have another barrier that troubles me. It is that I walk into the classroom and I feel like my hands are already tied behind my back when it comes to the tools that I need to teach 21st Century skills. #Tlap
A3: I always wanted to be a talk show host, treated my classroom like my live studio audience. Made it fun & entertaining #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A2: The biggest barrier is those satisfied with the status quo. Status quo is not enough. Kids deserve for us to dream big and make school a place where they are breaking down the doors to get in! #PumpthePositive#ssdpride#warriorscreate#JoinTogetherJanuary#TLAP
A3: Having a variety of interests/hobbies helps me relate to students with different areas of interest. To the same regard, it shows students that you don’t have to be defined by a stereotype. #rockclimberandprogrammer#tlap
A3: My “ace” is always pushing the envelope with new curriculum and new ideas. Next year, my friend and I are developing a new course about the history and future of science. Pumped!
#tlap#bethewildcard

You make it work, because it just has to do this creative project and you make it work willing the technology to bend to your willpower - Been there done that! #tlap
A3: My ace is my drive which comes from my past! When my husband and I both lost our jobs after the birth of our first son, I realized just how important an education was! I never wanted my child to be jobless without a good education. SO, I got an education...in EDUCATION. #tlap

A4: I've always thought of my class as the p90x of science. I try to mix it up and keep it exciting. Staying on the cutting edge of technology and up to date with research is important. Our @NYSMTP Book Study PLT has spent a lot of time on @RetrieveLearn#tlap
A3: I feel like @RaeHughart is great at this. I am working on it as a student teacher, but I do try to make learning fun and engage my students in anyway possible. I want my Ss to have a voice and feel empowered. #tlap

A3 My ace would be storytelling, writing, playing music (piano), hugging, ldressing up & getting into character--
but mostly being vulnerable & connecting emotionally--that is my ace. #tlap
A4: Try not to get tied down to one method of delivery for content. It's nice to be comfortable but that becomes boring for our students. Rather than kids expecting the usual, I want for them to anticipate the unknown. That gives them a reason to WANT to come back tomorrow. #tlap

A3: I always keep my "crazy" card in my pocket. Keep everyone guessing...what costume I will be in, what music I will be dancing to, or new idea/project will be next. I would a good element of surprise for sure! #tlap
I'm not really teaching it to the classes I see, just using the headstand for it's shock value, though could be super valuable, for me, I get 40 minutes, once a week, barely enough time for my computer science lessons #tlap
A3: My ace is my organization and creativity. I pull from my organizational and creative skill set on a daily basis. It allows me to drive and gear my instruction to best benefit my kids. #tlap#bethewildcard@PartridgeElem#partleads

A3: My Ace? Bw my passion for what i get to do every day & my smile (I just love to smile... smiling is my favorite😊), I am relentlessly positive. Add in a dose of my nerdy humor & negativity doesn't stand a chance. 🤓 #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A3: I use humor as my ace. We made a sway project today and I used “sway” in almost every sentence. It was sway much more fun than than a normal project outline. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A4 I love to create suspense. Set riddles/clues for the next day. Get kids talking/wondering. ALWAYS think BIG. Surprise them with unexpected experiences. We had a breakfast at a restaurant with a lesson. Free for students. WOW them. Be kind. Care about them. #tlap#bethewildcard
A4: I deliver instruction in myriad ways and offer Ss many opportunities to make the learning theirs. I remain flexible, following the ebb & flow of S-centered learning. It often takes some surprising turns! #tlap

A3: I am with you @hopekingteach! I love change every now and then and I get the most out of my kids when I do room transformations and bring music into our learning! I also love the outdoors, so I try to take our classroom outside as much as possible! @WadeKing7#tlap
A4: Try to tap into what they are into as much as possible, allow choice & imagine what I would have wanted class to be like #tlap#BetheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A4 So often I am the wildcard in class, I love doing the unexpected. One issue is that too often it is off the cuff and not planned well. This is something for me to work on in the New Year! #tlap
✨CREATE THE UNEXPECTED "I don't put my content down on a cold grill...I preheat it! Build mystery, curiosity, buzz, and anticipation before you even start your lesson."✨ @burgessdave#TLAP#quotes
Ace 3: Professional Organizations like @NCTE. I know I can throw out a question or a concern and have a thread of responses by the end of the day. Sometimes sooner. Nothing up my sleeve. All in the fingertips, friends. #tlap
A4: Always start each class in a new way: quote, joke, funny video, brain teaser, story, etc. PRIMES the MIND to learn and feel positive about class! #tlap
A4 keep it fresh, novel ways to celebrate, learn, demonstrate understanding, etc. I looped with my kids & when they realized we were doing our first transformation of the yr-their excitement was SO cute- I could NOT stay in character #tlap#thewildcard#BeTheWildCard
A4: I like to consider our notes as "Storytelling" instead. I try frame history as a movie, so just like a movie that has cliffhangers and major twists, I try to build up those moments for my students. They need to see history beyond names and dates! #tlap
A3: My ACE is music. I enjoy live shows & talking w kids about their favorite bands. I also enjoy writing & send note cards home to those who do something kind. Actions don’t have to be grand - just personalized! #TLAP

A4: In my gamified classroom there are hidden Easter eggs that keeps students exploring. When they find them they are so empowered to complete the challenge! #tlap
A4 At @GWCarverES we have been embracing the "unexpected" with school transformations. We are engaged from the kindergarteners all the way to the principal! #tlap
A4: to set the stage, I show students that math can be fun. I can be a goofball at times, but I find that my Ss love that side of me. Math has a neg persona and I want kids to see that #mathissumfun#tlap#BeTheWildCard
A4:I have to reflect on my teaching. I look at my students in the eyes and see if they are interested. If they aren't, I look to see what have I not done recently. Then I incorporate a strategy I haven't used in a while into the lesson the next day(music, jokes, video clip, #tlap
A4: One major unit (and skills acquired) led to the next and I stoked that fire with cliffhangers and, "You just wait!" Kids once skipped a dance for class stuff! #hooked#tlap

Being vulnerable is so difficult but important for deeper relationships. I always appreciate your willingness to show that vulnerability and help us grow in that way as well. #tlap
A4: By taking risks and not being afraid to fail. Reminding Ss that failure is just a first attempt in learning and encouraging them to have a growth mindset. Also allowing the Ss to have voice and choice #tlap#bethewildcard

A4: keep them on their toes and be flexible when planning. Don’t get stuck in a rut. Adapt to their needs and use their interests to get them excited. Tap into what they chat about and tie it to your class #tlap
A4: I agree.. room transformation small or large keep the kids guessing and engaged. Seeing their excited faces when you change things up really puts a spark into their learning. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A4: Becoming to predictable results in students who are just going through the motions. Keep routines, but change up instruction. Use multiple ways of delivery...including letting the students explore for themselves. #tlap
A4 I ask them to bring who they are into my room. I want them to create from where they are in life, not just school. I think a good # of ss leave their true identity at the school doors each morning. They put on their game of school identity to enter. #tlap
A4:I try to think about their interests but truthfully, right now, my ideas are coming from groups I am following! I’m so glad I found them! #Tlap#BeTheWildCard
A4: I’ve been trying to preheat the grill a day or so in advance for certain things. Build their anticipation! I’ve also been incorporating theme days...where our whole day revolves around a student suggestion as much as possible. Soccer day in Thurs! #TLAP
A4:Create classrooms where students can't wait to get in. Where curiosity lives, exploring their passions is encouraged, empowerment is the norm, risk taking is celebrated, failure is embraced and learning is intrinsically motivated. Students would not expect that! #tlap#leadlap
A3: my Ace is establishing relationships with students. Those relationships lead to wanting to find exciting, engaging lessons and activities to make class enjoyable. Plus, I enjoy learning new technology so wanting to incorporate that helps too. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A4: room transformations, costumes, theme outfits (think Miss Frizzle #goals), jumping on the tables, debates, music- I mix it up to keep my kids on their toes! If they're always certain of exactly what's happening, then why does it matter if they come? #tlap
One way might be telling them they don’t want to miss out on being here “Monday”, we have a big fun surprise. Get them excited with clues throughout the day . #tlap
A4: Create a class climate that embraces the unexpected - mistakes, surprises, celebrations, uncertainty. These things take time, and are sometimes inefficient, but so necessary to meet them in healthy ways to empower Ss' independence. #tlap
A4: I don't tell my students any answers. I say "good question" and "I have no idea" really often. This forces my Ss to figure it out by exploring or researching. This keeps things fresh because every question needs a different process to answer #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A4: Sometimes it is as simple as listening to them...really listening. And then saying "YES! Let's try that!" They come up with the most amazing ideas!! #TLAP#BeTheWildCard
Q4: I create the unexpected for my students by #tlap - ing my classroom as much as possible. Building anticipation and curiosity for the kids. Engagement and setting the stage to engage is EVERYTHING!#tlap
A4: an easy way I do this is by answering their questions with questions. So often kids are used to just being “told,” so I like to flip the script 🙃 #tlap#BeTheWildCard
Less than 24 hours from now Stella Pollard will be talking assessments. Be sure to bring your best as her questions will put you to the test. #pln365 kicks off tomorrow night at 8:30 PM EST
A4: Often it is as simple as thinking like an eight year-old rather than a grown up. What do I, as a child, want to see, hear, do, and learn in school today? #tlap
When you actively change your point of view, it can lead to unique, creativem and powerful visions.
A4: I love to surprise them by dressing up and doing room transformations. Look out, world....Flo from Progressive coming up to teach the Progressive Era #tlap
A4: By taking risks, embracing change and going all in when I have an idea, I’m able to bring in the unexpected. Most times what’s unexpected is that Ss enjoyed the learning. #TLAP
A4: I don't mind being "silly" with Ss. They got to Silly string me this year. I sometimes dance in when checking on them, and love to sing along on our Assembly days. I tell them they never know what I may do next. #tlap#bethewildcard
A4: This is something I am learning! I learned that Ss are best engaged when it's unexpected. My kids have one consistent piece:ME. The rest can change, my outfits, our class, our games, where we have class, etc. They know that a day in Suessville is a day to be remembered. #tlap
A4: Through an INCREDIBLE #PLF LIKE THIS... Keep ideas fresh and at the forefront! I never get comfortable bc then I become stagnant... the only type of learning that is relevant is the one that empowers every child! #tlap#NAN3EDU
A4: I LOVE changing the classroom, have a collection of hats, dress up, use #tlap hooks ALOT, have 1 minute dance parties or 1 minute Random Acts of Kindness, #gamification, FUN! I need to do MORE of this! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A4: I tie a lot of my curriculum to current events each year, and we "travel" around the school for lessons. And a lot of collaboration with others to come up with new ideas. #bethewildcard#tlap
A4: Ummm...I pay attention and then I try to take what I've learned from one great edu & pimp it to the next level. @burgessdave pre-heated the cold grill but I actually COOKED THE STEAK, potato, salad and dessert. Always grow. #tlap
A4: So many #tlap hooks to share! Love costumes, hidden surprises, music as they enter, “create an experience they will NEVER forget” (Thanks, Dave!) @burgessdave#BeTheWildCard
A4: I love to surprise them by dressing up and doing room transformations. Look out, world....Flo from Progressive coming up to teach the Progressive Era #tlap
A4: after visiting the @ronclarkacademy in June, I have taken more educational risks than ever before. I’m no longer afraid of how others, including my Ss, will perceive me. I’ll jump on tables, attempt to sing,& just let loose if it means my Ss are engaged &learning #tlap
A4: I don't want to just teach a lesson I want to create something that students will remember. I want my students to think "What (and when) is she going to do next?" #tlap
I create the unexpected by deviating from the lesson plan when Ss ask questions that could steer off topic. Ss will learn from each other and you from your Ss. #tlap
A4 My students don't do as well with the unexpected, however I am always helping them grow in that area. Always celebrate small successes and then push a little more next time. Always with enthusiasm. #tlap
A4. I love trying new things. Always looking for different, unique, things that I can add to change things up! Keep the Ss curious, Keep them guessing in suspense, keep them excited! #tlap
A4 - I've started to try to incorporate more room transformations. They do not come easy to me, but I see how they can create magic and so I KNOW that they are worth the time. Fortunately I also have an AMAZING team who helps create that magic with me! #tlap
A4: I still keep a list of #tlap books right next to my computer (thanks @burgessdave 😉). When I need to re-engage or change things up, my hook list is my GO TO! (We had a snowball fight today!) I love surprising my kids surprise visits, community projects, Skype collaborations.
Student reactions to "I have no idea" makes me smile. They give you the look like "You're the teacher you're supposed to give me the answer." Meanwhile you know that them finding the answers themselves will be more lasting! We get to guide them on that journey as well! #tlap
My ace is my classroom environment. It's painted, covered with American history/superhero posters, Funko Pops, etc. Fosters a lot of great discussions and they share their interests as well #tlap
A4: Empowerment is the key. Want to create the unexpected? Let the learners lead the way. Hand over the reins and give them control. Let them know you believe in them. Help them #dreambig & #reachhigher ~ be there for them if/when they fall to support & care. #tlap#bethewildcard
A4: Experience via Read-Aloud. We make this come to life in #Room407. I can read as a bear looking for a hat. Or Morrie. Or John Proctor. Or George. Or Lennie. We treat each like I'm getting paid to portray. The only way I know. Their voice (the best I can do) in the room. #TLAP
Being an interventionist, I try to continually use a Ss interest to find books for us to read and explore. I also use a variety of delivery techniques and have students lead discussions. Everyday is very different, although it may not look drastically different. #tlap
A4 the unexpected happens often as I try new things A LOT my kids are used to it and roll with it. They are willing to try anything even at the drop of a hat. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A3-My ace is creativity & willingness to try things-I joke with the kids I can turn ANYTHING into a lesson! Torn ACL=measuring angles w/knee elasticity. Don't want to learn your multiplication facts? Boot camp starts Friday! Building a new house? Bring in the workers! #tlap
A4: Create memenorable moments for them. Decorate the cafe for special meals - remembering not everyone has a Hallmark Channel life. Surprise Ss with the whole school being decorated. Have a pop up selfie wall. Have spots for fun! #TLAP
A4: I tell the students daily we will have fun and exciting work to do. They know they are allowed to be creative, collaborative, communicate, and think critically. I also create excitement with our STEM activities #SetTheStageToEngage#BeTheWildCard#tlap
A4: creating activities that they are not used to doing in previous math classes helps. Also allowing them to make mistakes and enjoy their learning process #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A4: I started including a #kidsdeserveit section of my weekly newsletter to staff. I provide ideas on ways to provide genuine experiences for students. #tlap#bethewildcard
Yes! Making it exciting! Making it new! Making it a surprise! Wanna buy a ticket to my class? Yes! Cuz you never know what to expect!! A game, a play, a poem, an art project, a collaboration.. who knows?! I’m gonna go see!! #tlap
A4: my Ss never knew what was coming from me in a good way...the routines and procedures were ALWAYS in place but the "shocker" the "stage" setter was as simple as a weird question to dancing in the snow barefoot...whatever it takes...open to the moment & creative thought process
A4 if I go to an Edcamp, PD, conference or see a cool maker/coding thing, I'll probably try it out in class ASAP, and learn it together, not wait for some perfect moment #tlap
Hey! I am looking forward to connecting in new ways with a brand new group of students in a brand new situation ... and making a difference for them! #tlap#EduMatch#DitchBook

A5: I want my students to know that they are more than just an academic student. I want to encourage them to build on their talents and seek to find their passion. Passion projects are a great way to learn about your students at a deeper level. Then infuse that into lessons.#tlap
A5: 1 minute spent informally w/ a student is worth 10 hours of formal class time. Build rapport & relationships around the edges of everything you do! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A4: Always being open about trying new things and honest that it may totally blow up or be awesome! Showing that I’m learning and vulnerable too helps kiddos so much! #tlap
A3: Being an interventionist, I try to continually use a Ss interest to find books for us to read and explore. I also use a variety of delivery techniques and have students lead discussions. Everyday is very different, although it may not look drastically different. #tlap

Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
I had a college professor suggest that I start buying actual costumes and props... I thought he was joking! But the more instances I see that I can use them... the more I keep making a wishlist on Amazon! LOVE the inspiration!
A4: Being an interventionist, I try to continually use a Ss interest to find books for us to read and explore. I also use a variety of delivery techniques and have students lead discussions. Everyday is very different, although it may not look drastically different. #tlap
A5 I love talking with kids about what they love, especially now that I'm in middle school. My students are some of my favorite people and I try to make sure I cater to their interests and ideas. Kids perk up when you speak their language. #TLAP
A5: Walking the halls during my planning period is the best! I like to talk to the kids and joke around with them. I also like to join in a PE class every now and then. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
Mine too! Love when Ss and Ts stop by "just because" - almost always leads to a conversation that helps to strengthen our relationship! So important! #BeTheWildCard#tlap
Like today when the district decided to restart my computer right during my instruction... It took 45 minutes to re-establish my foothold in my classroom. A definite Monday. #tlap
Debates, gallery walks, simulations, parties-learning can take place doing anything! The reactions to the desks being moved around never gets old. Excited to try more hooks from #tlap !!

Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A5: I was with these Ss since August due to doing a full year internship. I start student teaching tomorrow and sent out a Google reflection form that I am asking my Ss to fill out. I am going to read the responses and use them to improve. #tlap
#tlap A4: Don’t do the same thing over and over again. Get Ss up and moving, try something new, or let them be the teacher. Put what they are learning into action.
A5: I have students coming to see me before/after school. I have them also come during their Advisory period. They come to talk curriculum as well as non-curriculum topics as well. #tlap
Q5: Smiles and hellos in the hallway, conversations in this dismissal lines, conversations everywhere! Intentionally asking questions to gain a deeper understanding. #TLAP#BeTheWildCard
#tlap Struggling S just communicated with me that he doesn't learn well from his desk. He does better when he holds the marker. New strategy: can he come in a few min. early to see/discuss the lesson and become my "Chairman of the Board?" We're going to find out! #edchat
A5 I make sure that I speak to every child in my room, every day. I let them tell me their stories, and I share my own. I let them see me make mistakes, and we fix them together. I do whatever I can to support them. #tlap
Oops. I just realized that not putting the #BeTheWildCard with my tweet is NOT what you intended for tonight's participants. I'm on board now with the idea. Now, we can trend, I would think. Tipping point. #TLAP
A5 Okay, I haven't done this yet, but. I though one day I might join some kids in the cafeteria for lunch. Maybe I'll start doing it once a week, could be fun. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A4: I've SO enjoyed seeing all of the classroom transformations across our campus this year! AM/PM blackout room, crime scene, poetry cafe, campus wide camp theme, nonfiction characters, so much more! #CEpirates pull out all the stops for our little pirates! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5: I spend time with them at recess, and PE (I don't have to go out), sit with them at lunch just to talk, and attend extracurricular activities. #bethewildcard#tlap
A5: I love greeting my students at the door. I spend time in the hallway talking to students. I take @netflix recommendations from them (thank goodness, because one suggested Stranger Things which I now LOVE!). Also spend some independent work time with them to just talk! #tlap
A4: Keep the students wanting more...help create a shift of traditional learning for the students. How about instead of “testing” on text features- let’s operate on text features. Pirates became surgeons! #tlap
A5: Student surveys, listen to what they have to say, go to their activities outside of school, and selfies 🤳 Pictures are an easy way to build community! #tlap
@WadeKing7 A5: You have to meet them in their world (church, sports, music, theatre, scouts, band, etc.). You have to really listen to your students & give them advice and take advice. Help them when you can. #tlap#bethewildcard
A5: I attend ball games outside of school, I go to dance competitions, coach academic team, and I let them know random facts I know about them outside of school. I don’t want them to just think I am a teacher, I want them to know I am there for them! #tlap#BeTheWildCard

I take what would be #Blah & add some #LEADlap BAM!
Right #USD437 peeps?
I LOVE the mysteriousness. It's as fun for me as it is for them. #tlap
A5 I would love to start a lunch bunch or a monthly potluck where students can build community with me and more importantly, with one another. So often we want students to work together but give them very little time to get to know each other! #tlap
A3: Once my Ss (especially those most in need) feel that we have a safe, positive relationship, trust is there, barriers fade and instruction and learning can be enhanced. We all feel more free to take risks. #tlap

A5 I spend time with students. Lunch, breaks, morning. Talk, get to know them: passions, interests, hobbies. Know their story. Share meals, activities. With my group, I challenge Ss to teach me one of their passions. I will try anything! Share time! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage

A5: Started my Leader Lunches today! Identified Leaders, those that typically do what they're supposed to, are going to pick others who are improving to join our next Leader Lunch. Peer monitoring and accountability being ratcheted up! #tlap

A5 Being intentional - Joining in and playing with kiddos at recess, class FB page to learn about families, attending events outside of school (games, plays, etc.) #tlap#bethewildcard
Catch them in a non-academic time and ask about their interests. Let them know that you care about them, not just their assignments. You might be the only one that asks. #tlap
A5: I found this much easier in elementary. Now that I’m in middle I struggle getting to know 170 kids. I try to talk to them in the hallway between classes, find common interests, i also use a survey at the beginning of the year. #tlap
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage

A5 Personal narratives are a great insight into the lives of our children. I love the one-on-one conferencing. When we sit down to conference, I have a direct "in" into their precious little lives. They love that I know a bit of their personal history. #tlap
Absolutely. As Principal I encourage my teachers to embrace risk-taking. I do it by doing crazy things with my staff meetings, trying new PD strategies, pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. Sometimes I even dress like a pirate! We model what we get! #tlap#leadlap

A5: Lunch bunch, morning sharing, recess, go to as many after school events as possible. I am sure to catch up with as many students as possible in the morning as they are unpacking and getting ready for the day. #tlap#BeTheWildCard

-what are you interested in?
-what are you curious about?
-what's the coolest thing you have done lately?
-how could school be even better for you?
-what is one way you wish school would change?
#TLAP#BeTheWildCard
A5: The best way I build relationships & learn from my students is by talking to them! Think about it: how do you make friends? How do you sustain personal relationships? You communicate! Don't forget, tho, that writing is powerful too, esp for Ss uncomfortable with talking #tlap
A5: taking the time to great each student at the door with a hug and a “Good Morning”. Also just talking to my students about what they want to talk about. Not always about academic standard. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A3: I love to laugh and be silly. I try to make the not so fun lessons less boring by adding some excitement whether it be a fun chant, dance, or how I read out loud. My Ss enjoy when I get out of my shell and put on a show for them. #tlap
A5. Just take a minute to listen. Greet them each and everyday with a smile. Walk Ss home. Talk to them. I walked a Ss home today to just say, "Be proud of your boy." It made all the difference to the dad and child. #TLAP

A5: Every year I create these DNA (dreams, needs, abilities) inventories for each child. I do 3 per year and TODAY was one of those days! They painted while I chatted with them. Their learning and #Kindergarten program will be based on their answers. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5 I spend time with students. Lunch, breaks, morning. Talk, get to know them: passions, interests, hobbies. Know their story. Share meals, activities. With my group, I challenge Ss to teach me one of their passions. I will try anything! Share time! #tlap#BeTheWildCard

A5: I get to know most of the students in my school through a variety of ways. I've started having them come have lunch with me ore to read books with me #tlap
A5: I take the time to chat with my Ss one-on-one & in smaller groups. Lunch, recess, in the hallway, meet on the weekends for ice cream, & more! When Ss leave my classroom I always give them my email bc they are “my kids” & I want to stay in touch with them! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5: We use the Morning Meeting component of @responsiveclass Excellent way to build positive classrooms communities & relationships! It’s the best way to start every day! 🙌 #tlap
Couldn't resist joining after reading this one!
A5: Listen to them, ask them questions that aren't about the curriculum, and find multiple ways to show them how invested you are in their success beyond the books! CARE!!! #wholechild#kidsknow#LeadLAP#tlap#BeTheWildCard
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
Lunch duty is actually one of my fav times of day! Kid interaction! Also lunch bunch- Ss love small group attention at lunch time and I learn so much about their lives and likes! #tlap
A5: In study halls, when students are done with their work for the day, I encourage them to work on something they are passionate about. Trying to squeeze in a little unofficial #geniushour time! #tlap
Q5: I have lunch bunch each day in the classroom with a small group or the whole class. I will play at recess with my kids, they love racing me. I talk to them about topics they want to talk about. I attend their sporting events and music programs. #tlap#bethewildcatdrd
A5 You listen! 5th grader trusted me enough to ask if I would sponsor an Art Club, I told him yes, during my Lunch one day a week, overwhelming response from students, need a bigger room #tlap
A5: By being “present” when a S wants to talk, even if I have things to do, by greeting every single S I know in the hallway and getting to know those I don’t, by attending as many school functions, games, and events EVEN when I don’t have a dog in the fight (kid) 😄#TLAP
A5b: It also goes back to those "aces" in my pocket. I keep throwing my aces on the table each day, like bait. Then I pay attention to which students "bite" at each one and build from there. #tlap
A4- Classroom transformations! CSI, Boot Camp, A Day in Space, Super Bowl, Virginia Day...these are my favorite! But go smaller scale by creating a unique centerpiece in the room (animal skeletons to intro ecosystems), fun costumes, music, take the kids outside to learn! #tlap
A5: I eat with my Ss, go to their hockey games, dance recitals, have done home visits, look for books that hit their interests, have an individual handshake/welcome/goodbye for each Ss, notes/cards #tlap
Q5 Ask them! Find time,,and ask! Going to their events outside of school! Eating lunch or breakfast with them. Finding time to visit with past students! The time is there you just have to find it! #tlap
A4 by hearing opportunities when the knock! Like doing a Fundations lesson in the snow! Be novel, flexible and look for moments when you can ironsmith joy and learning into one! #tlap
A5: Kindness as a non-negotiable, including grace for mistakes. Lots of modeling and natural practice, but also some explicit teaching. Often Ss who struggle most with peer/self relationships benefit from explicit strategies w/social skills & reflection. #tlap
A5: I find that relationships are built around food.😉 I learn a lot about my students by sitting with them at lunch and talking to them during snack time.#tlap
A5 Building relationships is my thing! I have students create sample facebook pages the first day of class. I talk to them while students work. I greet them at the door and I go to games, concerts and other events they are involved in. #tlap
A5: I find out what they like and make sure to talk to them about it, attend ballgames, we have secret handshakes at the door; our grade goes on a three day, overnight field trip, and that is a great way to get to know them. #tlap
A5: I meet students at the door every day. We do surveys at the beginning of the year (I share mine with the whole class.) I have lunch with kids, enjoy our time at recess, and spending time with them while waiting for their bus or ride home. #tlap
A5: I've done Pokémon Go raids with some of my kids families (yes, really), attended ball games of all sorts, been to recitals- and works my kids interests into lesson discussions and examples. My goal is always to engage the lessons with their interests. #tlap
A5: Take every opportunity to be real! I work to let students see me be humble, funny, thankful, sad, excited, goofy, hard working, passionate, etc! We need to be with them not above them! #bethewildcard#tlap
They seem so different the first time you eat with them.... so much more themselves. More teachers should lunch with their Ss in the lunch room- not the classroom (although anywhere is better than nowhere). #tlap
A5 as an instructional coach without a classroom, I feel my greatest times of connections are arrival, dismissal, and hallway transitions are my greatest times to connect. A smile and a kind word can go a long way in a child's ❤️#tlap
A5 the first 10 minutes of my class is chatting time. Before we begin bellwork/ morning work; everyone must mingle and chat. I often have a line of students that can’t wait to share something with me about the previous day. #tlap
A5: 1 minute spent informally w/ a student is worth 10 hours of formal class time. Build rapport & relationships around the edges of everything you do! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5: I LOVE eating lunch with my ss! We also chat in the hall and during breakfast. Once I find out what they are interested in I make sure to ask about it. I also take opportunities to go watch them play sports or perform. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A5. I pray with my students every day. Learn what is going on at home real quick. Sit with them during class and lunch. Go to their games and concerts. Show that you care. #tlap
A5 I think relationships are best built organically. I try to great every student at the door everyday. A smile and "glad you are here" goes a long way #tlap
A5. Smile, Welcome them in, listen to their stories and what they have to share, when working with them you find out their interests, ask questions. Find out about their culture and families and friends. #tlap
A5: I have lunch with my kids, Morning meeting, I go to events for my kids outside of school. Attend all school events WITH my own family. #realtionshipsfirst#BeTheWildCard#tlap
You spend time talking with each child and getting to know them on their level. Provide opportunities in class for everyone to ‘get to know’ each other & build family community . Spread kindness culture #tlap#kidsdeserveit
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A5: Throughout the day I build relationships by listening. Moments are valuable if, YOU MAKE THEM. I don't agree with sending students out of my class b/c of behavior, hyper, etc. If you give Ss time and an ear...the moment is valuable, then the relationship is valuable. #tlap
A2: 💰is always a barrier that results in class sizes that are to big and a lack of resources, but I think the biggest barrier is mentality of what school is and should be. So much focus on grades and not the learning #tlap
A5: Use every little moment as opportunity to build relationships. Arrival duty? That turns into arrival dance party! Afternoon bus duty? That turns into fist bumps & "can't wait to see you tmrw!" Show a genuine interest in every S & you can move mountains. #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A5: Connections rock in the Counselor Cafe. I get to eat with every child every year; we talk about their lives and dreams, values and hopes while we practice our restaurant manners. It's epic! #tlap#bethewildcard
#tlap A5: Attend band concerts, sporting events, or plays. Get to know Ss so that you can relate the curriculum to their talents, career choices, or interests.
A5: I have a personal handshake with each of my students. I'm also not afraid to look silly. They love to teach me dance moves because I'm terrible. #tlap
A5: Recognizing accomplishments outside the classroom, attending events, starting class with “Who knows something good about a student in our classroom today,” taking photos of students at work and posting on the bulletin board. #tlap
A4. My ace -
I’m a BIG kid❤️ love to sing, dance, laugh, - LOVE to have fun with my KIDS!
Will teach anything that’s fun- except standardized tests which I have to
😞🤢🤮 #tlap
A5: Relationships are the foundation of everything. As a leader, relationships are built one moment at a time as trust is established. As a teacher, I always used humor and showed Ss I was truly interested in them. #tlap
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A5: I try to go to any games or parties they invite me to go. They are surprised and excited when I show up to see them. Next year, I really want to incorporate home visits. #tlap
A5 I find a connection right way and build on it over the year. Make it to games, plays and concerts to show them I care about who they are. Also let them see I am a real person #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5: I have my Ss record All About Me videos at the beginning of the year I then attend events that my Ss are involved in (both school & non-school) I have pics of my family all over my room and invite questions #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5: Just ask them and talk to them. Try to incorporate their interests into activities. Each week, I work my students’ interests into the vocab lessons. They love it! #tlap
A5: Building relationships is at the center of what we do! Now that I travel between 7 schools, I make it a point to go back and show I’m still in their corner! #tlap
A5: Recognizing accomplishments outside the classroom, attending events, starting class with “Who knows something good about a student in our classroom today,” taking photos of students at work and posting on the bulletin board. #tlap
A5: Take time to listen to them. Ask them Qs. Listen to their response. Tell them I love them and care for them. Positive calls home, and checking on them when they are gone. Recording myself reading books to them. #tlap#bethewildcard
A5: I talk to my Ss all day. I get really bored and exhausted on test days when I can't talk to them. I try to figure out something random about each Ss. Something that isn't really important to anything but them. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5:I enjoy greeting Ss in the morning, lunchroom, at dismissal, and any time outside the classroom. This is when Ss tend to tell me about themselves and open up. I use what they share to engage in conversation on later dates. I find that Ss now seek me out to share. #tlap
A5: building relationships is definitely key to success in the classroom. It is as simple as talking to kids. Sit by kids, help them, talk to them. Attend their games, concerts, activities. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A5: Going to their games, art shows, chaperoning field trips and dances, etc. Kids actually like to see their teachers take an interest in them! Even if I can't make it to something, I ask about it the next day #tlap
A4: Asking myself "is this just 'cool' or is it TRULY what is best for my kids?" Plus the best thing about being a teacher is being so many different roles... teacher, doctor, restaurant owner, crazy aunt... it all works out! #tlap
A5 I've strategically chosen to walk to and from lunch chatting w a child that I don't feel I have the strongest relationship with... when we get to lunch I sometimes play "Game of the Week" @ a table! Fun, low-stress bonding time! in conversation #tlap
Exactly. A former co-worker said this at EVERY meeting: "why reinvent the wheel?" We owe it to the kids, ourselves, the future to keep setting new goals, trying new things, and aiming ever higher. #tlap
A5: Absolutely. Don't be afraid to be human: share your successes, your works in progress, your goals. Model that mindset. Listen. Ask questions. Be genuine. Show up for them at their games, their concerts. Take time to talk to Ss who aren't talking. #tlap#heart#bereal
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A5- I have 1,001 students at my school. I take advantage of every interaction that I have to build relationships. Have to be intentional about taking with kids! #tlap
A5: I also meet my students at the door every day at the beginning of the day and they have to give me a hug, high five, or pound and I say good morning. End of the day I tell each one of them I love them. #Tlap
A5 I build realionships by greeting my students everyday & starting the day w/ a morning meeting. The students share anything important 2 them and compliment the student next to them. Good relationships amoung students are also key to a successful classroom #tlap
A5b: Had Ss Do an “All About Me” @GetKahoot at the beginning of the year, also had them creat a “Passion Page” on their Google Sites to teach Mrs. Steinbrink all about what they’re into. #TLAP
I give out high fives, hugs if they need one, I greet them at the door&tell them how happy I am to see them&while they’re there I take the time to follow up on something going on in their life (how’d you soccer game go?How was sewing class?-take time to get to know them #tlap
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
I love my partner in crime! She is always willing to hear out all my crazy ideas and we are committed to finding ways to make learning relevant and engaging for our kids! @sgtvaughn21#tlap
A5 Get to know their hobbies and interests and teach around these, learn their names, engage with them at recess and lunch by participating in kicking a ball, interaction one to one each day #tlap
I started at the HS level too and felt that it was right for me. Then I subbed in MS and eventually found full time at MS level! It's been a great blessing for me! #tlap
In reply to
@andreakornowski, @MrPStrunk, @heymrshopkins
A5: I have a personal handshake with each of my students. I'm also not afraid to look silly. They love to teach me dance moves because I'm terrible. #tlap
A4: I'll be honest...I've had to work on that this year because I like schedule and routine. I am not spontaneous. But last week we had a #ditchbook mini party, and it was so fun! #tlap#bethewildcard@PartridgeElem#partleads
A5: Teambuilding from day 1! Design activities related to themes/curriculum! #tlap Building Bridges- students create 2 cliques and build bridge between using only paper. Must support small weight. Loved it!
A5 the first 10 minutes of my class is chatting time. Before we begin bellwork/ morning work; everyone must mingle and chat. I often have a line of students that can’t wait to share something with me about the previous day. #tlap
A5: Engage with the Ss in conversations often...in class, over recess, eat lunch with them, attending events & games. I ❤️ finding out what interests & excites them. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5: Actively LISTEN to Ss, PLAY during recess, DANCE during brain breaks, Encourage. I allow myself to enjoy and be present and genuine in all the moments ❤️😊#SetTheStageToEngage#BeTheWildCard#tlap
A5: every moment counts. I try to create an atmosphere of trust with every small interaction in the halls or wherever. I am truly interested in them as people. That makes a huge difference #tlap
A5: Welcome them every morning at the car line, participate in recess activities, share thoughts on books they (we) are reading, celebrate their successes, etc. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5: Presence at their events leads to many more specific lines of communication about their interests. Plus that presence represents an investment. #tlap
A5: Ss should feel important & noticed all year, not just beginning. Year long stories, shares, projects, investigations, and unique ways of doing is important. To set the foundation for trust you have to be willing to keep it, so do they! #conversechat#tlap
A5: Take every opportunity to be real! I work to let students see me be humble, funny, thankful, sad, excited, goofy, hard working, passionate, etc! We need to be with them not above them! #bethewildcard#tlap
A6: Two main rules that I always am highly intentional about when playing games with students: 1) no turns no outs - every student answers every question independently 2) make the questions application driven and higher level. #tlap#bethewildcard
A5: KNOW YOUR STUDENTS! I take my family to my students' ballgames or any other outside event so they know "I get them". I use those experiences in my class to support their interests! #tlap
A5: The majority of my convos happen in the hallway! I ask them random ?'s all the time. On feedback forms, quizzes, bell ringers, etc. I also eat lunch in the cafeteria or have a small group eat with me in my class at least 1x a week! #tlap
A5: I get to know my kids, like REALLY get to know them. When we line up, during small groups, walking down the hall, as they walk in the door...all the time. We are constantly talking. I don’t dismiss what they have to say because to them it’s important. #tlap
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A5: I'm usually the first person students see when they walk into the school. As Principal, "high fives" and "What's happening?" are the first things they get! Talking with them at lunch, sporting events, in the hallway and in my advisory groups helps build our family! #tlap
A5: This FB post is from a local chef/restaurant owner who encouraged my son on Saturday night. She is his "wild card" Just imagine if all Ts had this passion for their students:
https://t.co/LyVL5lQNUG#TLAP#BeTheWildCard
A5: Plain and simple...I talk to them. #onesmallthing that has worked amazingly for me this year is to eat lunch with my students in the cafeteria. I love our time to socialize and connect with one another without curriculum pressures! #tlap
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A3: Games are my ace. I love to make them and watch students play them. I made an American History review games modeled after @gameofkittens that we've been using for review. It's a lot more engaging than a long review packet. #tlap
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Thanks! We have 510 (though next year we could increase by 100) and we eat in groups of 5-ish. We have a blast answering Qs like this: If you could only keep on friend, how would you choose? OR If you could fulfill a dream for someone else, what would it be? #tlap
A5: Every moment we have with students is a gift!
The big moments are important, but those little moments can be just as important! #TLAP#BeTheWildCard#TeacherMyth
A5: I get to know my kids, like REALLY get to know them. When we line up, during small groups, walking down the hall, as they walk in the door...all the time. We are constantly talking. I don’t dismiss what they have to say because to them it’s important. #tlap
A6 Take the focus off content, put it on process. If students know how to learn, they can learn anything. Show them the excitement of learning, of pursuing passions, of leading questioning. Focus on building questions, not answers. Create adventures. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
My son had inside recess at preschool today and talked about taking a brain break! It was so funny and real to get a five-year-old's perspective on #brainbreaks#tlap
A4: Often it is as simple as thinking like an eight year-old rather than a grown up. What do I, as a child, want to see, hear, do, and learn in school today? #tlap
When you actively change your point of view, it can lead to unique, creativem and powerful visions.
A5: I teach 5th, but we still do quick morning meetings. I'm in the hall in the morning and during transitions. I give compliments, which lead to conversation. Lots of interaction at recess! #tlap#bethewildcard@PartridgeElem#partleads
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Q5: I'm finding opportunities to collaborate with other teachers which helps me to connect to students via different content/approach. I'm currently a part of Project Sketchbook with art teacher friend and OUR students. This is going to be fun for all of us. #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A6 #tlap AUTHENTIC AUDIENCE! Send those letters out...invite community letters in. My Ss had a question on website today so he got on the phone and called!
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A6: By giving real world examples and letting them practice practice practice. Let them see that the curriculum can be applied in the real world. #tlap
I talk with the students, check in with them. We do breakfast club 2x a week and at least one lunch bunch a week. I also allow students to “show and tell” in any grade. #tlap
A5: One of my fav ways is to welcome, give a hand shake and talk to every student every single morning as they walk in the front door. They challenge me to see who says things like Happy Monday” First. Doing this allows me to get to know each child #tlap
A6. Our objective for the day is phrased into “today I am, so I can, I’ll know I have it when”. The “so I can” is always how they can apply the skill. We also learn through exploring and making connections, not by being given an algorithm. #tlap
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A6: We play a game called word sneak from the Tonight Show. We use Voc. Words and integrate them with content or something the kids are familiar with. If they use the terms within context of the story they can receive points! I love Jimmy Fallon! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A6: My lessons are 50/50. First the main lesson the next is doing, using assignments/projects Ss can use. Yes, there is vocabulary, but can they find a video that shows what a Blue collar worker is? Can they apply an import to current market? That's the learning #tlap
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A6: Two main rules that I always am highly intentional about when playing games with students: 1) no turns no outs - every student answers every question independently 2) make the questions application driven and higher level. #tlap#bethewildcard
A6 Any game = no turns, no outs, full participation. Next semester I want to be way more authentic in my instruction and focus more on students leading, connecting, and investigating. #TLAP
A5 I try & create learning opportunities where relationship building is part of the learning process, not isolated. Thinking is about connecting the logical, emotional and creative mindset, regardless of content. Relationship building (trust, empathy, respect) is constant #tlap
After seeing @gcouros 3x in 2017 (#superfan) I implemented these into our classroom. Life. Changing. They are now so ingrained I don’t need to think about them. Looking to start the new year off in a great way? This list will do the trick. #classroomculture#KidsDeserveIt#IMMOOC
A5: Talk less, listen more. We decide together how things get handled in our room. It's no place for "it's always been done like that. " Take the risk for your Ss they will return the favor. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A6: By giving Ss many opportunities to use info learned & skills gained. I always think of ways to extend. For example, why memorize a grammar rule when Ss can apply it in writing for an authentic audience with an authentic purpose? #tlap
A5-Take time to get to know your students-greet them, actually talk with them and LISTEN, jot notes of encouragement, show interest in their lives. They must know you truly care before they will ever step outside of their comfort zone for you. #tlap#kidsdeserveit#BeTheWildCard
A5: I am an "open book" with them about my life. Whenever, they want to talk or spend time together I don't judge them, I listen or give them my unbiased opinion. I let them know we are a family.
#tlap#BeTheWildCard
A6 This year I switched my approach with students. I tell them all the time, it is not about the WHAT it is about the WHY. Science isn't about memorizing, its about explaining the story of why and how we are here. #tlap
A6: real world simulations where they have to apply the skills they’ve learned. Make the application tasks meaningful and engaging! Also, always ask why... require constant application #tlap#thewildcard#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A6 #tlap AUTHENTIC AUDIENCE! Send those letters out...invite community members in. My Ss had a question on website today so he got on the phone and called!
A6: As a math teacher, it was all about a real life example. The example had to “real” for them. Create scenarios with their names, our locations/stores, and make it something they or their families would do. #tlap
A6: I like to get Ss up and moving. How can I take a paper/pencil worksheet and make it something fun and memorable? Also using games! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5: When with Ss really be there, totally. No phone, never at the desk & ALWAYS look them in the eye. Smile & be pleasant. Maya Angelou said it best “people may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel” #BeTheWildCard#tlap
What has always stuck with me is, “we only have this one moment.” There is such a short window in everything. We must make the most of every minute. Time is so fleeting. #tlap
A6: the KEY is to find fun and creative ways for students for learn a concept! If they students are having fun, the students will learn automatically. You have to make each lesson memorable. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A6: Let students TRY. I learned from a Mentor Teacher not to give them all of the answers or steps. It can be painful to let them squirm and struggle, but they are FAR better off for it #tlap
A6: Hands on and interactive as much as I can. However, this is much easier for me in math, science, and social studies. I need to work harder at applying this to my reading and writing workshops as well. #TLAP
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A6: I try to make my Ss learning about the process. How to find the answer rather than what the answer is. It can't be perfect. We have to memorize, but we don't have to memorize everything. #tlap#bethewildcard
A6: Assessment of learning has to be more authentic. Asking students to use information in a project or to solve a problem and then reflect on the process shows understanding more than a test possibly could. #tlap
A6: I let my students teach me. After I introduce, I have them dig deeper. We have discussions where they teach me what they know. Through that they learn from themselves and each other. #tlap
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A6. I teach the "why" before the "how" or "what". What the Ss knows or needs to know serves no purpose if they don't understand why they need to know it... #tlap
A6: Whenever possible give Ss authentic opportunities to share their work through google slides, skype or GHO's , and connecting with outside world #tlap
A6 In our classroom we stand to answer questions, we restate, we offer our answer, and we support/prove it. No one gets a pass. Also, the Ss teach other Ss whenever possible.
A5. Get to know my kids first day! The first weeks establish that relationship! Know their book genres, talents -
I go see their games and events;). Love to see them outside classroom walls! #tlap
A6: Make the connection real to your students. I was never really concerned about those two trains traveling down the tracks at the same speed growing up. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#justsaying
A6: As much as possible, have Ss make meaning in ways that apply to real-world needs, with voice and choice. Agency is so crucial to motivation for Ss and Ts, and so is the opportunity to make a difference. #tlap
A5 #gameoftheweek faces @GMSfalcon :
Uno
Blokus
Catchphrase (decades edition is especially hilarious)
*I'm bringing out the 1st new game of 2018 tomorrow...
Exploding Kittens! #tlap
A6: #PBL & #STEM are all about application! That’s my favorite part of my job as a #STEAM teacher! My Ss are building, thinking critically, & applying knowledge to real world situations! We’ve built mini-golf courses, prototypes for new toys, bridges, etc! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
After visiting @ronclarkacademy I completely changed our class discussion. I created an environment of respectful discussion where the kids lead. They are forced to critically think and respond and then agree/disagree with each other. It has revolutionized my classroom!! #TLAP
A6: We focus on real world applications of the skills we are learning. There aren’t too many places in MY life where I need to memorize so I don’t expect the same from my students. #tlap
A6: I use @Flipgrid to help facilitate class discussions by allowing my super shy kiddos to answer at home. I also use quite a few #kaganstructures to ensure everyone is actively participating. #tlap#bethewildcard
A6: Talking and doing! I don't want my kids to memorize for a week and then forget. My goal is to help them make connections to life and really understand the material! We have had author visits, trips to meaningful places, & soon a vid chat w/zoologist. HELP MAKE MEANING! #tlap
A6 Am I alone...I strongly dislike the word rigor?! I tackle this just as you say, less memorization. Our new science standards are really built for innovation and reimagining cook-book type labs. #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A6: I create authentic projects. I do not ask students to just "make a collage" on westward expansion, I have them do a twitter chat on it. I don't ask them to make a powerpoint on an invention, I have them do a Shark Tank presentation on it! History is about skills! #tlap
A6: I am still working through the idea that traditional rigor forgets or denies the idea of "affect." Rigor is more than focus. Done right, it can also bring the "feels." And creates the memorable. It was that room On that day. The learning that will last. #BeTheWildCard#tlap
My daughter (4) asks about my classroom all the time, but often she can't get past the idea that my 3rd graders don't take a nap during the day. =) #tlap
A6: Put the bat in their hands!! Step back & let Ss take the lead! Give them an opportunity to show what they know, struggle, reevaluate, collaborate, & discover on their own! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A6. Creativity, making things, doing experiments where their making observations and having discussions about what taking place, designing things, learning how things work. #tlap
A6: Teaching vocabulary become more beneficial when they stopped memorizing and started using the terms in a meaningful way. Memorization just helps achieve an objective, application helps you beyond the objective and throughout life. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
#tlap A6: I call it putting their learning into action. My seniors are finishing the senior paper. They will create or design something from their topic. One S wrote about magicians, & he will put on a magic show.

I always say we cannot forget that teaching is a humanistic profession. If we can’t humanize learning? Our kids lose and we lose. #tlap#makeitreal#kidsdeserveit
A6: Put the learning into action! I show my kids how they use their learning in real life and give them opportunities for them to take their learning and create/apply it in their lives at school, at home, or in the community! #tlap@hopekingteach@WadeKing7@burgessdave
A6: Allowing students to work together, to apply their knowledge to content/questions they'll see later on in class, and always remind them how the class will be beneficial in the future #tlap
A6: By going beyond the textbook and worksheet and empower Ss to do alternative projects to demonstrate learning, incorporate music, art, tech, drama, and get Ss creating and living the lesson, connecting to my content. #TLAP
I love my partner in crime! She is always willing to hear out all my crazy ideas and we are committed to finding ways to make learning relevant and engaging for our kids! @sgtvaughn21#tlap
A6: Incorporating more #restorativecircle practice has really helped me this year. Taking time to craft questions, to listen, to 👀 them respond to each other, all while being #mindful of our ⭕️ norms, is a genuine testament of their application of learned skills. #tlap
A6: I add rigor with the POWER of BECAUSE in all tasks. My #Firsties are doing awesome at explaining and proving their thinking. Our district has a HUGE push toward embedding critical thinking in all subjects #SetTheStageToEngage#BeTheWildCard#tlap
A6 This can be difficult because memorization is like a security blanket, it is low level and easy to implement while appearing to be under control. To really focus on application Ts must break the mold of old and try the new! #tlap
A4: Show up dressed as a character, transform the classroom to reflect the topic/content of focus... make it a “moment” they will never forget. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A6: I challenge my students through projects and the essential questioning that takes place in the classroom. I provide examples and then ask deeper questions for them to discover or research for answers #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5 Continually work to meet them at the door, visit their rooms, offer breaks, #pbis reward items like Lunch w/ Principal and Catch with Carlin. Working this month to eat lunch with a student everyday for a week to build a better connection #tlap
A6: Connect to real life! Is what I'm doing for them now going to be beneficial to them in 10 years? If not, drop it and move on. Rote memorization is so 2017. #tlap#bethewildcard@PartridgeElem#partleads
In reply to
@WadeKing7, @burgessdave, @PartridgeElem
A6: We have lots of discussions. I ask WHY all the time. They used to think that meant they were wrong...now they know I want them to dig deeper, to justify their decisions. Accountable talk 24/7. #tlap
A6: As a math T, I loved the #3ActMath approach. Get Ss engaged in an intriguing situation & asking the Qs BEFORE giving them all the info. #flipthescript of typical textbook Qs. #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A6: I love using novel engineering. It creates a purpose for reading, students make a connection to the character, and they solve a problem by creating a solution. Two students won a recent novel engineering challenge!! #tlap
A6: I believe rigor goes hand and hand with relevance. You have to make it relevant for your Ss to empower them to apply their new knowledge. Sometimes that means providing them with opportunities, and other times it means to allow them to go out and seek them. #tlap
A6: When creating math lessons, I try to think where I apply the skills in my life. This week we learned about unit cost. What better way to teach it than to play the "Supermarket Sweep" theme song and letting the students do a little "shopping"? #tlap
Don't just preach engagement! Show teachers what that actually looks like! Create an experience that they will never forget so they will want to do the same for their students! #tlap#bethewildcard
A6 Application is so easy for computer classes. We just have to make sure they are not clicking what we tell them without thinking but applying what they have learned. #tlap
Q5: It can seem hard with the larger classes - but it doesn't take long. I vary where I sit in our circle time each day and answer the question and react to their answers. I find out a lot of information and bring it up authentically later. They love that! #tlap
#tlap A6 We have brought Primary Source speakers into our classrooms to engage Ss and apply knowledge. Ss can interact and learn fro the history makers. No need for memorizing.
Well of course I'm going to say via technology! So many amazing ways for Ss & Ts to demonstrate their learning, knowledge and understanding! #tlap#edtech#BeTheWildCard
A6: #PBL, #geniushour, having Ss help plan lessons to help make them more relevant, provide challenges & then be open to collaboration & different ways to solve things #tlap
A6: The key is taking the basic information and challenging the students to use it in a different format. I am amazed at the results. You can see the wheels spinning in their heads. I love it! #tlap
A5: We do I've breakers at the beginning of the year. Conversing with students about non-academic topics before class and in hallways helps. This year I've also opened my room up during lunch and Ss come in to play board games (and escape cold) #tlap
Q5: Relationships are an essential part of student engagement. How do you build relationships and learn about your students interests? #tlap#bethewildcard#setthestagetoengage
A6: Important to remember MORE isn't BETTER. Simplify & set clear goals & expectations. I like the @ArgumentDriven approach bc it so clearly links the claim to evidence & justification. Also #HyperDocs bc Ss have choice and voice. Take time to make it meaningful! #tlap#knowWHY
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A6) Application of writing skills is a must through their educational careers. Finding ways to express their thoughts and share that out to the world raises the rigor and engagement. #tlap
A6: We are lucky enough to be 1:1 & have admin who support stepping out of the box. Students often learn through hands-on opportunities, learning experiences, stepping out into the community, and PBL/STEM. Content is embedded, but not always the priority. #tlap
I did not have many when I was a student so I was not sure about how to implement them. But meeting @LCSCoach has really changed my perspective. I'm all about projects now! #tlap
A6:Sknce coming back from RCA I have had my 1st graders stare to speak, and explain their thinking. Our lessons have become more of a discussion than a ping pong match (teacher questions/student answers etc) It's holding the kids so much more accountable for their thinking #tlap
A6: Let Ss have a voice and choice. When they are involved in their learning they are motivated to apply information. Use authentic means to demonstrate understanding. #TLAP#ssdpride#warriorscreate#JoinTogetherJanuary
A6: Learning should be about learning to communicate your ideas, crtitical-think the “facts” presented to you, collaborating with others to accomplish a task, making connections between learning. #tlap
A6: My co-teachers and I try to incorporate as many 'real' world problems and applications as possible. Our ss especially love using what they've learned in games! Coding has been great for getting ss to apply and connect what they've learned!
#tlap#BeTheWildCard

Q6 I mentor & supervise instructional coaches-- we have Coaching Bootcamp ea/month.
R.E.A.L.Scenario based
We vid-record our coaching & reflect on authentic responses as team.
"We"=I don't ask them to do anything I wouldn't do. I do the same & they give me feedback, too. #tlap
A6 I want the ss to create learning as opposed to consume it. Ss create artwork that is purposeful, meaningful & relevant. It provides an outlet for them to make sense of the world around them, while also building essential creative capacities needed 2b future/present-ready #tlap
A1: My WHY is because I want to see more kiddos with confidence and creativity succeeding every day. I feel like I started teaching to do something with my life, and I’m staying to help them do something with theirs! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7: Social media has been one of the best and worst things that has happened to education. It's easy to get caught up in "flashy" posts and compare ourselves to others. But I TRY (again try) to only compare myself to the teacher I was yesterday. It's realistic and healthy! #tlap
✨A7: DON'T LET YOUR "JOKER" BRING YOU DOWN! Lean on your crew! "All pirates travel with a crew; you can't sail, navigate, and fight battles on your own." @burgessdave ✨#TLAP
My students loved our text features surgery! They walked around the rest of the day in their masks and scrubs and told everyone they were text feature surgeons. #tlap
A7: This has been a struggle for me for years. It's finding my creative outlet and putting that feeling of negativity into something creative and useful that can lead to amazing learning. My best lessons are from the joker trying to bring down the day. #tlap
A6: Structuring activities that help Ss connect with the material & understand it on a deeper level. Helping them to make it meaningful & authentic #tlap#BeTheWildCard

#tlap I've started using @robertkaplinsky PBL problems - real world application problems - the students love them - and the learning and collaborating that happens is tremendous!
Y'all, if you don't know @class_torres YOU NEED TO. The level of discussion in her classroom is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Each time I walk out of her classroom, I stand amazed. #sheisthewildcard#tlap
After visiting @ronclarkacademy I completely changed our class discussion. I created an environment of respectful discussion where the kids lead. They are forced to critically think and respond and then agree/disagree with each other. It has revolutionized my classroom!! #TLAP
Vulnerability is scary, but it is also the foundation for all innovation, creativity, and change.
We want the latter, but we fear the vulnerability.
Embrace it. Grow. Achieve amazing things for you and those you serve! #TLAP#BeTheWildCard#TeacherMyth
#tlap A6 We were able to combine Social Studies and Art with Philo Barnhart and Charles Moisant visiting our school. Mr Barnhart created Ariel from The Little Mermaid and worked on other Disney movies.
A6: Less concerned about an answer. Ss share how, why, process. Validation of the thought behind their process & their ability to articulate it. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage

A7: #tlap by remembering that feeling I get when my kiddos get excited and invested. By remembering how bored or how engaged I was with different teachers in my youth...by bringing out the kid in me and thinking about what stuck!
A7: go back to my why and reflect- is what I’m doing best for my students? If the answer is yes... 👍🏼 I also constantly challenge my own thinking & bias to ensure I can answer that question accurately. IS it best for my Ss? #tlap#thewildcard#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
Q6: I don’t give tests any more. My students have to prove they are learning in other ways. Memorization is a skill but the ability to learn is more important #tlap
A7: Feed off your Ss energy!! Do others give me side eye for room transformations or making Pokémon themed activities? Of course!! The thing that makes it worth it though is my kids! Always, always, always- they show me the time and effort is worth it. #tlap
This has been an amazing chat, but I have to head to bed, new semester starts tomorrow. Thank you again @hopekingteach@WadeKing7 for an amazing #tlap tonight and thank you @burgessdave and @burgess_shelley for bringing this book to us. Looking forward to Wednesday.
A7 I look at my students. I gage my teaching by their level of engagement and academic successes. If they are engaged, learning, passionate, and challenged, I don't need to listen to any negative thought/voice that may enter in. #TLAP
#tlap you have to focus on those higher tiers in Blooms taxonomy. You continually have to not just test the skill but provide Ss w/ opportunities to apply.
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A5: Relationships in teaching is my EVERYTHING! And after visiting @ronclarkacademy x2 this year, our entire school’s about to launch the house system! It is a DREAM💙COME TRUE! I can’t wait to see the relationships between Ss & Ts! @hopekingteach@WadeKing7#tlap#BeTheWildCard.
A6: It is all in a CHALLENGE: take out the red flag and toss it in the ring... design-make-create-STEAM-Passion projects-Genius Hour! #Empowerment! #tlap#Nan3EDU
A7: I connect with my people here...practice Habit 7 #sharpenthesaw...spend time with those I teach with that we call one another "our biggest fans" #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7: At the end of the day, of it's best for your students, its best for you. Remember who you serve, because with great risk comes great reward. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A7: the “jokers” just empower me to be even better. No time to dwell on them. Always love @ronclarkacademy’s reference about walkers vs runners. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A6: If the assessment or assignment involves CREATE it's a really good start. Requires more effort than MC, worksheets, etc... but so worth it. Get them out of their seats, active brains are more engaged brains!!! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7 I ask myself the question, does it help my kiddos. If the answer is yes, then I don't listen to the haters. As the wise TSwift says, " haters gonna hate, hate.....) #tlap
A7: I sometimes feel bad if I’m not doing the same lessons as the other SS teachers on my hall, but I gotta do me, and do what works for my kids. #tlap
A4: I create the unexpected by changing up instruction. I rarely try to repeat the same activity unless the kids like it. If they like it, I try to improve on what went wrong. #tlap
A7: Social media has been one of the best and worst things that has happened to education. It's easy to get caught up in "flashy" posts and compare ourselves to others. But I TRY (again try) to only compare myself to the teacher I was yesterday. It's realistic and healthy! #tlap
A7: Focus on what we know is right. There will always be people that question your practice but if you can defend it and know you are right just move past those voices that try to slow you down. #tlap
A7 And what if the Joker is the norm? I totally find my creativity being unplugged daily. So I show up with a second deck the next day. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
Q7: The Joker is our own negative self talk. I admit there have been many times I do positive self talk to myself on the drive to work. I think it is helpful to just be secure in ourselves. Ask for help if we need it - don't be a silo. #tlap
I am a avid believer that if they can teach a skill to someone else: their peer, their teacher, their parent, their best friend...they have become the expert and own their learning. #tlap
A7: I reread notes & drawings received from former students. I keep them all in a box. Kids telling you you're awesome makes it better. Or I'll try something new. If I'm battling the Joker, it's typically because I'm in a rut & feel like I do the same thing everyday. #tlap
A7: its all about mindset for me! If I know I’m doing the right thing for the right reasons then I’m not as quick to listen to the negativity!! #tlap#bethewildcard
A7: I get on twitter! I refresh with twitter chats and just checking in with my PLN. They are there to give advice, encouragement, etc. #tlap#BeTheWildCard :)
A7: Honestly, by prayer, surrounding myself with positive people, reminding myself daily that students deserve my best and that is why God allowed me to be in this profession. Kids deserve a champion! #tlap#bethewildcard@WadeKing7
A7: My joker comes from starting my career at a toxic school. I still have doubts almost daily that stem from that experience. You just have to suck it up and realize that we are not here for ourselves, we are here for kids, so push the joker aside and BE GREAT! #TLAP@WadeKing7
A7: Remember you're working for the kids, and not the adults. As long as I am doing what I know is best for them I am ok with the "talkers". #bethewildcard#TLAP
A7: I am trying to live by the motto to surround yourself with people who will lift you higher. When I’m feeling self doubt creep in, I lean on the positive people around me #bethewildcard#tlap
A7 I never listen to the jokers. Forget about the negativity. Keep the focus on kids; all about them. When your heart is in the right place, it will drown out the jokers. Keep more kindness in your room. Let kindness overpower the jokers. Be the difference. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
Powering through! Just like our kids, we can learn from our classes as well-what did/didn't work and head back to the drawing board for next class/year :) #tlap
A7: Oh man, as a 3rd year teacher, my Joker gets loud! Noticing the Ss from other classes yearning to be involved in what we have going on helps me squelch the doubt. Ss are great at showing you their approval, or lack thereof. #tlap
A7: I'm pretty sure of myself, and my goals most of the time but sometimes you wonder why you keep doing it, but then the kid smiles and you see the joy #tlap
A7: I overcome negativity by reaching out to positive people. Again, the groups I follow on social media. Additionally, reading. #tlap#kidsdeserveit#BeTheWildCard
A6: Ss are creating everyday! Today they were making @tasty videos of how to make homemade ravioli! Loved their creative tripod ideas! #tlap#bethewildcard
A6: Real world connections are the key. I teach English and team with a history teacher. Our cross-curricular projects are the favorite of our students and the ones that they remember the most. #tlap
A7: Would it be unkind to say kill ‘em with kindness? Bless their hearts, they may not be ready to handle all you have to offer. Find your tribe and ROCK ON! You be you! #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A6: Have students USE the content rather than memorize it. Create google vocabulary slides, answer higher order questions using @Flipgrid , get kids to move around, etc. #tlap
A7: I surround myself with positive people. I disengage with negativity. And I laugh many times a day every day. I try to find the joy in everything, which is sometimes hard. But that’s when I turn to my friends and family for support. #tlap
A7: I overcome the jokers by killing them with kindness and passion. I continue to be as creative as possible and worry about what is happening in my room, with my kids. #positivevibesonly#tlap
#tlap A7: I try something, & if it doesn’t work, then I reflect and redesign and try it again. I don’t teach the same wY each year because I have different Ss who have different interests.
yeah, we spend much more time processing our learning and less time doing notes and direct instruction. More work for me, but I think the learning is deeper #tlap
A7: It's something I'm still working on. . .really. . .trying to determine if this commentary right now is coming from my stakeholders or simply a person holding a stake. One is seen as helpful feedback. The other is harmful holding back. #BeTheWildCard#tlap
Q7: I remind myself of my why and that I am enough. I look out at their faces and know that everyday matters. When my students are laughing the negativity quickly leaves. #tlap#BetheWildCard#itmatters
A7: I love following teachers on social media it is one of the best ways to expand my PLN however, I always remind myself what I see is their highlight reel. I only need to compare myself to myself! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7: This is a tough one for me. I'm hard on myself & know there is so much for me to learn & room for me to grow. When I have these times, I go to where I get my affirmation - my Ss. They have a way of letting me know I'm making a difference like no other. #BeTheWildCard#tlap
A7: Vulnerability is scary, but it is also the foundation for all innovation, creativity, and change.
We want the latter, but we fear the vulnerability.
Embrace it. Grow. Share what you have going on with those you trust. #TLAP#BeTheWildCard#TeacherMyth
A7: I surround myself with positive people. People who uplift me and encourage me, but are honest with me when I need it. Prayer is essential. #tlap#BeTheWildCard#sethtestagetoengage
This is so true! I don't think I have every doubted myself as much as I have since social media. HOWEVER, I've never improved more either, especially by trying to squelch that comparison bug :) #tlap
A6. I teach the "why" before the "how" or "what". What the Ss knows or needs to know serves no purpose if they don't understand why they need to know it... #tlap
A7: Positive people attract positive people. I try to celebrate victories. As team leader, during meetings aside from talking about student concerns we also talk about student praises! Focusing on the positive makes the job worth it! #tlap@ERobbPrincipal@ToddRisser
A6: We focus on real world applications of the skills we are learning. There aren’t too many places in MY life where I need to memorize so I don’t expect the same from my students. #tlap
A7: the joker is real! But I told myself 7 years ago I wouldn’t be a statistic. I was in the teaching game for the long haul. I just have to shake it off sometimes. Also good teacher BFFs are a must!! #tlap#BeTheWildCard#setthestagetoengage
A7- go to social networks to find my teacher tribe. Since the digital age, there is not a reason to feel isolated as an out of the box educator. So many of us color outside of the lines and think it is BEAUTIFUL! #tlap
A7: 1st and foremost I work with an amazing support system. 2nd, I am not afraid to make mistakes/fail in front of my students. I want them to be comfortable taking risks, so I need to model that for them. #tlap
A7: This is a tough one for me. I'm hard on myself & know there is so much for me to learn & room for me to grow. When I have these times, I go to where I get my affirmation - my Ss. They have a way of letting me know I'm making a difference like no other. #BeTheWildCard#tlap
What a great chat tonight it has been fast and furious and I have enjoyed every second. As my good friend @LemarrTreadwell says don’t forget to follow five tonight and expand that PLN #TLAP
A6: Stop comparing yourself to others. That can get you down faster than anything else. Learn to lean on those that you can learn from and do your best. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone daily. #BetheWildCard#Tlap
A7 Love people and be kind! I teach my students to do everything in love (or as close as they can get to it) and that everything is a lesson. Learn and grow! And I have to keep remembering that Jesus is my cornerstone. #tlap
A7 Stick to my gut and roll with what my kids want, need, and suggest. They are why I'm there, THEY get the most say in how we learn. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7: For me it’s having that group of people that I can share ideas with. People that I can confide in and get feedback from. Even though we are educators “adults”😜, it’s still important to have people believe in us too. #tlap
A 7: I try to brainstorm with my colleague or just go for it and don’t second guess myself! If it is negativity from others, I try to ignore it but that can be hard. I have a select few people i vent to just to release the frustration. #tlap
A7: Good question! Sometimes that Joker is so hard to ignore. I try to remember my Ss and my "why" and go for it. Sometimes the joker still wins out 😥#BeTheWildCard#tlap
A7: I always look at the positives and don’t let myself succumbed the negatives. I remind myself why I teach and pull out the why I teach folder that’s filled with notes and pictures from my students #tlap#bethewildcard
A7: I talk with other Ts that are mentors, read notes from former Ss, and now pull out my #KidsDeserveIt book bc they all help me get back in the right mindset for #WhyITeach! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A6: I chose activities that focus on taking facts and using an academic/tech skill to demonstrate learning. For our last project students researched a topic, wrote script, and made a 90-second tutorial on it. #tlaphttps://t.co/eur1XgE51W
Q6: A wild card rule of rigor is to focus less on memorization and more on application How do you put this into practice?#tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A7: This is my absolute biggest struggle. I truly believe that everyone needs that one person that you can lean on. I am so thankful to have a teammate across the hall that listens and encourages me daily. - Believe in yourself! You were made for this! #tlap
A7: Find the people who light the world, who remind you to shine your own light for others. Remember that time is precious - how do you want to spend it? With a re-frame, there's really no time to share with those who might hold you back. #tlap
A7: It can be tough. That Joker can be a nemesis. (Especially when deciding on a big move to an AP or Principal role!) But blocking out that noise and focusing on all the little joys and victories taking place in your classroom/school each day can fight him off pretty well. #tlap
#tlap A7: I try something, & if it doesn’t work, then I reflect, redesign, and try it again. I don’t teach the same way each year because I have different Ss who have different interests.
Q7 cont: For the internal joker, you have to remind yourself that YOU are WORTH IT! Your Ss are worth it! You were put here to make a difference so GO and DO! #BeTheWildCard#tlap
Was amazing! For students who did the "Ice Cream Scoop" they brought in ice cream and modeled how the Ice Cream Scoop revolutionized the industry. It was amazing the thought they put into it! #tlap
A7: You’ll never have everybody loving you or what you do or how you do it. Work within your system, but You do You. Always. Even if that means some of the X-Men visit for a day. #TLAP
A2: The biggest barrier in the system is changing the culture of school to be more positive and inclusive. I spend a lot of my day focused on relationships-between my and my coworkers, me and my kids, and of my kids with with each other! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
What a great chat tonight it has been fast and furious and I have enjoyed every second. As my good friend @LemarrTreadwell says don’t forget to follow five tonight and expand that PLN #TLAP
A7: Overcoming the "joker" can be challenging. I keep my eye on the prize...my students! Negativity can slow the bus down but that bus has a destination and by gosh, I won't let it slow down! #tlap
A7: If my students are progressing and I know for a fact they are learning in my class, I will never listen to the “joker.” I will ALWAYS do what is best for the students and they are and will always be the most important to me! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7: I avoid my “joker” with the negativity be reading notes from former students. I like the reminder of all of the good I’ve done! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7 I limit my time with the negative people but sometimes they give my thoughts that lead to a new idea to try in my classroom! I am also lucky that I have some really positive people around my room that enjoy my crazy ideas1 #tlap
A7: Create learning experiences that you enjoy as well-even if it’s a new one that you design. Sometimes, the challenge silences the inner critic because your too busy learning, teaching, and experiencing the lesson along with your students to notice the Joker. #tlap
A7: I learn from my mistakes. I don’t harp on them. Avoid negativity and keep positive peeps in my life. I take five when I need it and refocus my energy #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7: to eliminate the "joker", I try to only focus on what I can do in my own classroom with my own students; doing what I need to to help them. When necessary, reach out to Twitter PLN (#MTBoS) for support, ideas, encouragement #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7-Surround yourself w/(in the words of @ronclarkacademy ) runners & people who support you! Find like-minded folks who will continue to challenge you to be the best you can be. We ask kids to fail forward...we must do same! TAKE THAT RISK. It will pay off! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7: This is hard, and definitely something I actively do. “Everything we need to make positive change is already here.” I remind myself that I am my own worst critic and that I need to find the positive within me. #7coreassumptions#restorativejustice#tlap
A7: Still learning to overcome the joker. I have to say working at the same campus as your sister helps. I know at the end of the day, @hellums_lindsey is encouraging me, fighting for me, and she will only criticize me to make me better. #findyourpeople#tlap
A7: I look back on what I was doing a year ago, a quarter ago, or even a month ago - and realize I’m moving forward. My students are happy and learning! I know I’m trying my best and that’s what matters. #tlap
My inner joker is thrown into overdrive this year. I did a lot of self reflecting over this snow break and winter break, lean on my team, and focus on growing and learning from my situations. #WorkInProgress#TLAP#BeTheWildCard
A7 I let S’s voices drown out any negative voice, internal or external. Remember the why, The Who, and the urgency of our task #tlap@LaVonnaRoth@stacey_arzt
A7: I surround myself with positive people and stay away from the negative. The kids feed off the vibe given off by the teachers, so it’s best to focus on the positive! #tlap
A7: I turn to Twitter. My #PLN has my back and they believe in me more than I believe in myself. I blog. I re-read my favourite DBC books. I surround myself with people who get it. I try to be patient and empathetic and kind anyway. #tlap
Q8: Strive for progress, not perfection. What will you do that is different to challenge yourself this week? Even if the idea or opportunity flops. Learn and grow from your mistakes. Keep it positive! Be The Wild Card! #tlap#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
A7: Distractions, that’s what I call it. When you know you are fulfilling your purpose, anything that tries to bring you down is just a distraction. Call it like you see it and move on. #TLAP
A7 I ignore the Joker at least most of the time. I have a strong support in my husband who reminds me often to not listen to the joker. He reminds me every time it creeps in of the impact I have on my Ss #TLAP#BeTheWildCard
A7: I pray, look at pictures and notes from my ss past and present, talk to a few fab colleagues, read inspirational quotes, go #RunLAP, and when all else fails call momma, cause she will always be my biggest cheerleader! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A3: I love using performance based activities to provide an outlet for my kids who are not pencil to paper learners! I think it builds presentation skills, group commodore, and self confidence! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7: That is seriously my biggest struggle....even after all my years of experience. I have found that regular acupuncture helps calm my thoughts and keeps me centered. #tlap
A7: I rely heavily on my amazing team of coworkers & my incredible PLN!! These are my go to people for challenging my thinking, supporting my ideas, and pushing me to be better each day! I ❤️ my crew! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A3: I love finding new ways to make a boring or challenging math concept fun. Creating new games, ways to use food, and interactive activities to bring math to life is definitely a favorite of mine!! #tlap#bethewildcard
A7: The less you're around negative talk, the fewer negative thoughts you have. If you surround yourself with positive thinkers, it's easier to keep the Joker at bay. #tlap
Q7. Surround yourself with people who put the students first and are open to new ideas. I am surrounded by many supportive teachers who share ideas. #tlap
A7: It is much easier to ignore the Joker when I reread notes and cards from my former students. They help me remember the experiences that we've had that the Joker once thought I couldn't do. #tlap
A7: I overcome my “jokers” by continuously making connections, seeking knowledge, working to improve my craft, and helping others. I believe it’s not until I stop learning and growing, that I have let the “joker” win. #tlap
A7: My office door! Everyday I walk in to the faces of former students, colleagues,
and my 2 favorite students (also call them sons!)
Nothing repels that inner doubt like a daily reminder of WHO you are serving and why! #tlap#LeadLAP#knowyourwhy#BeTheWildCard
#tlap A7: Many times, it's so hard to ignore that JOKER - he can be so loud! My answer - MUSIC. I put on music, turn it up, and it refreshes my mind and my soul - I do this in class too when students are getting negative and/or discouraged. Brain breaks are so important!
It’s not about me, nor any other jokers.... it’s about them! :) it makes it easy to let all the rest go, but it also makes it imperative that I stretch myself and challenge myself #tlap#thewildcard#BeTheWildCard#SetTheStageToEngage
National championship game, grades due tomorrow, this chat, thinking about 1st day back- agh...my brain is literally starting to smoke #bethewildcard#tlap
A7: I struggle with worrying what other people will think, and get in my own head over it!! People have a tendency to make comments "oh here she goes again" I have a REALLY hard to blocking that out. I'm trying hard this year to focus on my kids!! #tlap
Talk about stepping out of your comfort zone! Lol! :) Thank you for taking it easy on us tonight everyone! And thank you for your passion. This tribe is incredible! #tlap#bethewildcard
A7: If I had let that 1st principal control my joker anymore than it did, I wouldn’t be the awesome teacher I am today! 🤩🤩🤩 I also work with several negatives and I have learned to surround myself with positives!#tlap#BeTheWildCard
A7: I do my best to stay positive and away from the chatter. I recognize others on our Brag Board and practice random acts of kindness #SetTheStageToEngage#BeTheWildCard#tlap
A8- I've been working on revamping using ideas from #xplap#learnlap- Just need to get back to school if this snow ever melts enough! So excited to try so much!
#TLAP
A7: As Ron Clark always says, “Avoid the poison posses.” I try to reach out to new teachers and involve them in Critical Friends Groups after school. We share lessons, strategies, concerns, and fears. We laugh, eat food, and enjoy the camaraderie and the learning. #tlap
A4: I love adding movement activities to review stories and concepts! Usually my kiddos love doing anything active, so they tend to focus on learning more when they can use their whole body (and brain)! #tlap#BeTheWildCard

Thanks Dave! I've been really thankful to connect with you! Really enjoying your book. Just finished going over your first 3 days, helping me reflect on what I want to do with my students next year! #DaveRules#tlap
A7)That inner voice can make or break you. Choose to live in the positive. Monitor and adjust your teaching and never give up because Ss are depending on you to be your AMAZING, PASSIONATE self! #tlap
A7: I overcome it by knowing that I’m giving my kids my best every time. If what I’m doing benefits students while using research based strategies, obviously I must be doing something right especially when the data proves the effectiveness. #tlap
We are going to work on a #hyperdoc to create our Vision Boards. These Vision Boards will guide us for the remainder of yr and future. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A5: I spend once a week eating lunch with students, I spend lunch the rest of the week with my coworkers, and I invite parents to be a part of our everyday learning! #tlap#BeTheWildCard
A8 Help another educator create magic! Collaborate to make learning amazing for kids. Whether virtually through collaborations, or in person. Simply make it all about the kids and their experiences! Whether change happens now, or a coming transformation. #tlap#BeTheWildCard
