Rachel here! My recent success? My STEM grant for Minecraft Makershop!
WHOA I'm jealous! My handyman skills need some sharpening. Dull! Like a prehistoric spoon.

Brandi Wright, 5th grade teacher, Kanawha Co, & a recent success was having Element Superhero day in my class.
Can't have too many success stories, especially this time of year! Fits well with the focus of the chat. https://t.co/38XxlEbtAi

Sorry to miss tonight...gearing up for on site tomorrow. 😊
Hello! I'm Michelle, and I just found out has a 3D printer! Too cool!
I was thinking... Wow, hardwood in the closet!
No problem Karla! Good luck!
Derek, I literally released 2 classes this week to create somthing that represntd what they lrnd. With ZERO instruction.
congrats! I just got a grant too! Loving spending the $ to enhance our programs!
Moment of transparency: Title of chat is REFOCUS. Prob a result of my own need to refocus & reset my GPS. I hope it's worth it!
Mine was through the Governor's STEM grant. Was yours as well? :)
I had to make a spreadsheet of the Stem opportunities available at our school this spring. Success!!
Loving these success stories btw!
Hi everyone! Julie here. I'll be in and out tonight. My most recent success is probably my new grant 4 our library
That I would like to see! It will turn out gr8 I know.

I don't have a class, but work with ages PK-8th. Growth in independence, self-guided learning, and motivation
Hi ! Welcome to . Glad to have you a part of the community!
A1 Independence(control their own learning), collaboration, & critical-thinking.
Q1: Being thorough, asking good questions, seeing things through to the end.
A1 -- independence, self-reliance, critical thinking
A1 independence, creativity, responsibility
A1: 1- Ability to lrn something new. 2- Compassion for others. 3- Hope
A1: I would want my students to GROW in their drive/want for more, their abilities to take risk, & maturity to handle set-backs.
A1: I immediately think of soft skills for ideal S growth. Independent, confident, & having perseverance (if I have to pick)!
DARN! Perseverance! That should have been one of mine. Can I redo? lol
Perseverance is a good one. Coding is good for this I've found :)
Yes! Compassion! The explosion of name calling breaks my heart!
I'm FASCINATED by the responses! I didn't want to influence anyone's answers so I purposely delayed my own.
Independence is tough, but the 4Cs are easy to choose all the time. https://t.co/LxM7g8uhMC
we are apparently wonder twins. Lol!!!
A1: Self-motivation, integrity, & problem-solving! It's hard to choose only 3!
I'm in a HS & public library so broad range to start. Soft circuits, minecraft, sewing/crochet & others
OOOH! Integrity! What my Ss do when no one is looking. Good one.
I like the term https://t.co/ZTBMpNPK86
A1: I immediately think of soft skills for ideal S growth. Independent, confident, & having perseverance (if I have to pick)!
also focusing on kinesthetic stuff for little ones with Legos sand and other stuff.
has a badge called Sticktoitiveness
nope! You made us pick 3 lol hahaha
A1-- I want my kids to WANT to learn and enjoy the process
I'm intrigued by the fact that none of these skills mentioned are measured often & often forgotten in public ed. Q2 soon!
ya just trying to build awareness for now. Then expand next year. How bout you?
Mine's just a summer 5 day workshop I'm designing. I'm not going to be working in state next year
A1 continued-- I want them to rediscover the joy of learning. For so many the luster has worn off...
Amazingly not 1 person said better test scores…
yet What do we spend the most time talking about w colleagues in the building? Test scores? Standards? Initiatives?
A2 Some Technology and TOO many choices!
A2 Ss are so focused on "right answer" that they don't understand that learning is a process; mistakes lead to understanding
A2) obstacle that prevents love of learning? Standardized testing...
A2: Where a schl spends their time def represents what they value. When time is available, on what does ur schl spend their time?
Q2-- Low self-expectation, low belief in the importance of education, no belief that education is a bridge to a good future!
I hear ya Joe! I have to say no to myself sometimes because I get distracted by another cool thing I'd like to try.
A2--Low self-expectation, low belief in the importance of education, no belief that education is a bridge to a good future!
This is it! Blunt tool for assessing when we expect outside the box thinking. https://t.co/CJyvPsx7He
A2) obstacle that prevents love of learning? Standardized testing...
A2 cont'd -- I get too little time with Ss to allow for editing/experimenting
A2: lack of motivation or seeing need to push. Ss lack the intrinsic push sometimes needed to enable the learning
So true! I don't know how many times a day I say, "there is no right or wrong ... What do you think??"
YES! Too much is made of the numbers--not enough of the joy.
totally agree! What do we put the focus on in front of our Ss!?
Thankful that I feel like my school is moving in a good direction to harness student interest.
A2: Lack of relevance and choice can be a barrier to S motivation. Provide experiences that inspire!
A2: Focusing on testing, too much data collection, & only going above/beyond for things like OEPA...dog and pony show.
A2: Ss home-life, low-perception, and low self-esteem. Nobody to mentor and believe in them or neglectful adults who close doors.
The data that we often leave out is what we know about our students. They aren't just numbers!
I've been blessed this year to b able to work on my relationship w/ Ss & see how that has improved many aspects of day together!
A2 Time, mandates, & Ss with little investment in the process- We need concepts that resonate w/their world.
VA beach sounds awesome! For a few reasons lol
Super student-centered administrator who holds monthly meeting to listen to kids.
A2: 1st yr in the HS this yr. I'm lrng that the rigid grad requirements that r still in place represent obstacles.
Serious?! Are they on Twitter by any chance? That's great. Encourage them to share their progress :) Here or Yammer.
Skipping out on to put the little one in bed. Hope to be back!
A3: Lots of tech skills. And skills for jobs that don't exist yet. Creativity, innovation, collab, etc are in high demand
A3 You know I have to say & productive usage.
A3 Part 2 Digital communication & as it applies to
A3). How to still communicate like a human in a digital landscape. Also-- staying in touch with natural world.
A3: Critical thinking skills. If given the choice to sink or swim, Ss need to SWIM. That drive to keep going WILL change lives
A3 -- digital citizenship, self-motivation, collaboration
A3: Btw, these images were all labeled for reuse with modification. (new skill) :)
A3: Discernment about information, it used to be that if it made it to the library, it was legit; Ability to sift through info!
Gr8 response It's not the most knowledgable that wins today, it's who can find HQ info the fastest https://t.co/c0kFc3ZLq8
A3: Discernment about information, it used to be that if it made it to the library, it was legit; Ability to sift through info!
A3 the ability to explain how things work. Ss can operate and ipad/phone but not realize what it took to create it.
1/2
I want to instill the desire to learn like Ts in the group demonstrate. https://t.co/NTAgs7Kjgn
A3: Critical thinking skills. If given the choice to sink or swim, Ss need to SWIM. That drive to keep going WILL change lives
More A3). Understanding that connectivity to other people, cultures, and places will make us stronger, more successful.
They need the ability write a complete sentence, while making observations in a forest on a smartphone. Amen!
A3 2/2 Ss have "soft hands" need to get them "Dirty" and start creating things rather than buying from a company
A3: This will sound like a bit of an oxymoron: The mindset to disrupt & be non-compliant. This wrld needs innovators.
YES! information literacy in the digital age. https://t.co/hEo24QIjxG
A3: Discernment about information, it used to be that if it made it to the library, it was legit; Ability to sift through info!
It's incredible how tech has transformed instruction. No longer can you sit and wait for the teacher for answers.
Yes to all of this! https://t.co/hRwa1asnqJ
They need the ability write a complete sentence, while making observations in a forest on a smartphone. Amen!
is a great for finding images labeled for reuse with modification. https://t.co/GWbCyGDF8s
A3: Btw, these images were all labeled for reuse with modification. (new skill) :)
WOW, I'm once again FASCINATED by the responses. I don't have these convos inside the walls of the school.
Awesome, thanks for sharing Jamie!
Ts need to use tech to take control of their PD or be left behind. Tech changes fast, and we have to keep up.
If only more were willing to do so. That's the sad part. So many dislike school PD, but don't do their own PD either
Well said Brandi! Are you in the race to the bottom or the race to the top? :) https://t.co/POFMmGvUu7
Ts need to use tech to take control of their PD or be left behind. Tech changes fast, and we have to keep up.
A4: Flexibility and adaptation to the ever changing world of education. Desire to facilitate and watch students take control
A4: Ts have to keep up w/ tech in order to be engaging & relevant. Ss are digital natives & deserve Ts who speak their language.
A4 Ts need to be more willing to put Ss in driver's seat; more creative in facilitating learning experiences, and...
A4 cont'd ...more collaborative with other Ts and broader community
A4) Connecting to the smartphone generation. Finding ways to engage the digital native.
Often, the best experts exist in the building. Share knowledge. Personalize PD!
https://t.co/MsZkwqtno8
Ts need to use tech to take control of their PD or be left behind. Tech changes fast, and we have to keep up.
A4: Cloud-based assignments; Collaborative pd - because no one can learn it all; device management; not being the techie in room!
A4: Feel silly sayng this but release of cntrl is new competency. Ss dnt need a T barking orders, providing notes, & readng .ppts
Yes to this! Great answer! https://t.co/1nAJN0jSxf
A4 Ts need to be more willing to put Ss in driver's seat; more creative in facilitating learning experiences, and...
A4 Chhhhhanges!!!! stop relying on the text book and finding alternative ways to get through to students
No way--not silly. Giving up control is a toughie for a lot of folks. Great answer! https://t.co/sybFYgZOEz
A4: Feel silly sayng this but release of cntrl is new competency. Ss dnt need a T barking orders, providing notes, & readng .ppts
and all the .ppts are always in comic sans or papyrus font.
A4 Admins who plan school based PD need to know their Ts strengths the same way we need to know our kids.
Do baseball fans go to book store & ask for txtbk on baseball? Music fans? Textbks rarely instill passion. https://t.co/vJ7LEgQKRD
A4 Chhhhhanges!!!! stop relying on the text book and finding alternative ways to get through to students
What's a textbook? Do I have one that covers my content? :)
I don't get why Ts avoid of letting Ss take the wheel. I love seeing my Ss competently fly solo!
Big for Ts, especially as we push for creativity. https://t.co/JWWTYkCrUQ
A4: Feel silly sayng this but release of cntrl is new competency. Ss dnt need a T barking orders, providing notes, & readng .ppts
A4: is a must! FACE: Family and Community Engagement practices.
can we get to come to WV?
. is not playing nice tonight
A4: Ts must reach outside of their own classrooms. Taking risks benefits Ts & Ss!
I wish this was reality in schools. I love learning, but hate PD that's not designed w/ ME in mind https://t.co/kVa60OyxHW
When teachers care, they will share!
will there be a transcript of tonight's chat? I missed it.
A5: Getting more than 2 people to attend any of my tech PD sessions...
A4 GRIT, Innovator Mindset and Taking risks
Q5) making sure every student who takes my class loves it, is successful, & can write a college essay 😉
A4 The ability to curate and vet digital content…and letting go of control
A5 -- I wish I could make each student feel they have everything they need to learn how to do anything
A5: Well, now I want a 3d printer like but prolly won't happen. Maybe will give up his secrets...
A5: Impact more Ts in my building.
A5: get more of my colleagues on Twitter. I thought it would be easy but it's been difficult.
I have legos... maybe we can do a week trade?!? lol
I'll help you!!!!! next year! lol
A5 Took my answer, except I want impact more Ts across WV https://t.co/C4T7nIY84R
A5: Impact more Ts in my building.
Many here share ur frustration. Don't attend other statewide chats like Montana, Ohio, NC, AL, MN, KY, FL https://t.co/nasoN9jsg7
A5: get more of my colleagues on Twitter. I thought it would be easy but it's been difficult.
Thanks for a great ! Off to bed...we have OPEA tomorrow! It's like the Super Bowl of school days!
I'm amazed by how many Ts don't use Twitter. is part of my PLC- the community where we collab & grow as Ts.
I even show them the content from my feed and it's like they forget how to read right on the spot!!!
I'll leave you with this. Set your GPS & be sure all ur actns align. I managed my time poorly tonight :) https://t.co/tzmemfkS3S
Great tonight! Thanks for the discussion & see you in 2 weeks.
