    A1 - We use 4 Proficiency Levels: 4 - Exemplary 3 - Proficient 2 - Approaching 1 - Beginning We've found this to work well so far. #sblchat
  • garnet_hillman - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1 I prefer four levels, but anywhere from 4-6 is very manageable and ideal. Percentages utilize 101 levels...too many! #sblchat
  • RoweRikW Mar 1 @ 9:08 PM EST
    Hi Jessica! Welcome! #sblchat

    Hi Ken! #sblchat
  • kenmattingly Mar 1 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1 I used to use 3 & have transitioned to 4 levels this year. Ideal number is 2-9. What matters is Ss understand levels #sblchat
  • hoffmanteambret Mar 1 @ 9:08 PM EST
We have 4 levels in our setup. I like having an even number and toward fewer. less confusing #sblchat

A1 Using fewer levels simplifies the grading/scoring and makes it more meaningful and transparent to all stakeholders. #sblchat
  • KatieBudrow Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1 School uses 4. My classroom is down to 3 (Ss don't like the lowest level so we drop it). Would love to have 2: got it & not yet. #sblchat
  • RoweRikW Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1 - We find the 4-point scale to be more feedback-focused than the 100-point scale which is splitting hairs and heavy on failing! #sblchat
  • garnet_hillman - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
Hi Peg! Great to have you with us. #sblchat
    In reply to @PegGrafwallner
  • mrs_dereche Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1) we use 4 lvls: minimally, partially, proficient, and highly. We find three isn't distinguishable enough #sblchat
    In reply to @garnet_hillman
  • davenport78 Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
    A1: We use 5 Proficiency Levels: 4--Mastery, 3--Proficiency, 2--Emergent, 1--Significant Gaps. 0--too little work. We use it K-8. #sblchat
  • RoweRikW Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
You'll need to be "on the ball"! #sblchat

Been using 1-4 but looking to change to 1 or 0 ... #sblchat
  • jtmehr Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1 4 levels. But I do use halves in giving feedback so yowe could technically argue 7. #sblchat
  • RoweRikW Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
    You're here tonight! #sblchat
    In reply to @BrianAlaback
  • kenmattingly Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1 I should have said ideal is 2-7. More than that gets confusing and hard to differentiate between. #sblchat
  • eliseheger Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: We use 3 proficiency levels, trying by to avoid associating with A,B, C, D #sblchat
  • rickwormeli2 Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
#sblchat Hi everyone -- Rick Wormeli here from Herndon, VA.
  • KatieWhite426 Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: We have four levels - Enriched Understanding, Proficient, Exploring, Building Readiness. #sblchat
  • TTmomTT Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: I use 5 levels in my math classroom. It works within the confines we have. #sblchat
  • garnet_hillman - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
RT Q1 How many proficiency levels do you use in your school or classroom? Is this the ideal number, why or why not? #sblchat

  • rickwormeli2 Mar 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
#sblchat A1: As long as those levels have clear, vetted evidence descriptors, otherwise, they can be as confusing as others.
    In reply to @garnet_hillman
  • MrLePla Mar 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: Our 1st year (in transition) we have 5: exceeding, meeting, approaching, developing, beginning to meet #sblchat
  • davenport78 Mar 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: Some Ts at my school wanted half increments (3.5), but we don't define that, so we stick with the whole numbers. #sblchat
  • PrincipalMKelly Mar 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
    Good evening #sblchat!
  • KRScienceLady Mar 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
I like a single point rubric with left column What evidence do I have of proficiency, Middle Learning Targets, how can I improve? #sblchat
  • RoweRikW Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
    Sounds binary to me... #sblchat
  • MikeSzczepanik Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
    Been using 4=100; 3=89; 2=78; 1=64 ... not happy with it #sblchat
    • garnet_hillman - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
Do you have to do any grade conversion from your proficiency levels?
      In reply to @MikeSzczepanik
  • AaronSBlackwel1 Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: I prefer either proficient or approaching. It is to ubiquitous to try to define advanced. Plus, it is so much clearer that way. #sblchat
  • KRScienceLady Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
    Im with you! #sblchat
    • KatieBudrow Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1 School uses 4. My classroom is down to 3 (Ss don't like the lowest level so we drop it). Would love to have 2: got it & not yet. #sblchat
  • kenmattingly Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
Yes @garnet_hillman how to move between levels must be clear to students, otherwise they don't have tangible target #sblchat
    In reply to @garnet_hillman
  • KatieWhite426 Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: We wanted to be sure all four level titles were hopeful and positive. Strength & growth, not degrees of deficiency #sblchat
  • MsEhuber Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: 0,1-4. I can identify 4 levels, and so can the kids. This also translates into their state testing score and GPA 1-4 and A-D/F #sblchat
  • walkerjd40 Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1 Does anyone use partials within those levels? Such as 2.5 or 2.75? #sblchat

A1) I think it can vary by course. I've found 3pt scale to work better in math, and 4pt for others. Any way needs to be a CLEAR #sblchat
  • rickwormeli2 Mar 1 @ 9:12 PM EST
#sblchat 'Different perspct: I get up close to 10 levels, it's too similar to 100-point scale and splitting hairs w/descrptrs.

  • KatieBudrow Mar 1 @ 9:13 PM EST
I don't. Sometimes the rubrics will show the S has evidence in two levels. We look at which is stronger to decide. #sblchat
    In reply to @walkerjd40

#sblchat Most research I've read (or limited ones I've done in my own classes) indicate three to five levels at the most.

  • mrgarychu Mar 1 @ 9:54 PM EST
A6 Emphasis on the learning process and opportunities to show growth. Descriptors are used to convey level of understanding but.... #sblchat
  • davenport78 Mar 1 @ 9:54 PM EST
A6: The best was when we had a student panel explain SBL/SBG to parents. They did it better than we ever could. #sblchat
  • mrgarychu Mar 1 @ 9:54 PM EST
A6 ....not set it stone; can reassess to prove S knows material #sblchat
  • DRich0696 Mar 1 @ 9:54 PM EST
A6: I simplify for parents - need to reboot, have some parts, can do it well, nailed it and need a new challenge. #sblchat

Getting a drivers license is great exmpe #sblchat

  • technolandy Mar 1 @ 9:55 PM EST
A6 discussing how to show personalized learning journeys rather than comparing each other on common tasks has been a good starter #sblchat
  • kirk_humphreys Mar 1 @ 9:55 PM EST
A6:When connecting with parents, I am specific with what their child knows in regards to standards and what they can do to improve. #sblchat
  • MsEhuber Mar 1 @ 9:55 PM EST
@stephwilson78 my PLC has created one for each major standard. The kids self assess too. #sblchat

  • garnet_hillman - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:55 PM EST
Exactly - so let's own the process and report their proficiency levels accurately and honestly. #sblchat

  • xakellis Mar 1 @ 9:55 PM EST
Sure, good teachers can override, but you want a pattern of evidence supporting the judgement. Kids unlearn skills. #sblchat @garnet_hillman
  • BradLatzke Mar 1 @ 9:55 PM EST
A6 Recommend SBG FAQ in print/online in multiple languages as needed. Takes care of basic Qs. #sblchat
  • jtmehr Mar 1 @ 9:55 PM EST
Really have loved showing Ps this year the scaled assessments. Makes so much more sense to them when seen in action w/ Ss work. #sblchat
    • garnet_hillman - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:53 PM EST
A6 Parents want examples of the proficiency levels just like students. Allow them to see what evidence demonstrates each level. #sblchat

  • KatieBudrow Mar 1 @ 9:56 PM EST
A6 A lot of the time, we look at rubrics together. Ps see exactly what the Ss sees. Lots of transparency. #sblchat
  • KatieWhite426 Mar 1 @ 9:56 PM EST
A6: We let students explain it (video "ads") and we also use metaphors #sblchat
  • mrs_dereche Mar 1 @ 9:56 PM EST
A6) I explain early and often to Ps who ask. Most Ps early on just want to know a single letter grade, but later appreciate detail #sblchat
  • kenmattingly Mar 1 @ 9:56 PM EST
