#ProsperISD chat open to all in and out of district teachers discussing best practices and working with students K-12. It will occur on the second Thursday of every month at 8:00pm CST.
Patrick O'Neil, Admin. Learning can happen anywhere - but I'll admit that I am at home on my couch with the dog on my lap tonight! She likes to help! #Prosper4ward
A1: It allows for flexibility, gives students voice and choice, and allows for meaningfully collaboration & creativity among students. Not to mention, it allows students to explore THEIR interests & prevents "recipe projects." #Prosper4ward
A1 The beautiful part of the STEAM mindset is there is no right or wrong answer. It allows students to discover concepts themselves through exploration and inquiry. #Prosper4ward#PISDEdtech
Q1 I love that the students have the ability to choose and have input in their learning and questioning. Plus, STEAM can reach ALL learners because it covers such a wide variety of topics, lessons, and challenges. #Prosper4ward#PISDLibrary#ccelibrary#cockrellmakes
A1: I feel like STEAM really focuses on problem solving and collaboration. When students are working together to create a solution, that is student-centered, awesome learning! #Prosper4ward
A1 Itâs one of a kind learning that bring many ideas together. Individualstidemts get to showcase their strengths while learning and building on and from each other. #Prosper4ward
A1 The STEAM mindset is crucial in every classroom, because it consists of a variety of problem solving situations, where Ss grit and creativity is consistently tested. Ss love the challenge and the opportunity to work together in novel situations. #Prosper4ward
A1 I think STEAM helps students explore more of their world and make connections between subjects! Everyone wants to see how things work and connect in the real world, so students are more engaged and willing to risk it! #Prosper4ward
A1-STEAM allows Ss to be creative, explore, challenge critical thinking, engage innovative ideas, and become more independent in problem solving.
#Prosper4ward
A1. The STEAM mindset is focused on letting students be explorers. At its core it allows for more student centered teaching. Discussion, inquiry, experimentation - these all allow students to becomes owners of their own learning in ANY subject #Prosper4ward
A1 learning is student centered when it allows choice, flexibility, creativity, originality, differentiation- all promoted in the use of STEAM #prosper4ward
A1: I learn just like every single other person in my class of 25. Said NO student ever. STEAM allows students to show learning in their own unique way. #winning#Prosper4ward
A1 I â¤ď¸ that STEAM puts the students in charge of their learning. They learn that success comes through trial and error. You gotta have some GRIT! #Prosper4ward
I agree! I also like that you said THEIR questions. So often lessons are structured so that students ask the questions we want or are prepared for...not always the ones they need. #Prosper4ward
A1- it allows for students to guide their own learning. Itâs such a treat to watch students dig deep into a problem and collaborate with their peers to formulate a plan and a product. #Prosper4ward
A2: STEAM projects often require research which promotes literacy AND student have to write about how they came to their conclusion with evidence to back it up! I would love to collaborate on some STEAM lessons for ELAR! #Prosper4ward
A2: STEAM requires understanding technical texts, content specific vocabulary, critical thinking, and the ability to clearly communicate these ideas to others verbally and in writing. All of these skills are developed through literacy based instruction. #Prosper4ward
Q1: I think that STEAM offers students the chance to be engaged in what they are interested in. If they are incredible artists they should be able to use their skills. #Prosper4ward
A1: STEAM sees content knowledge as part of the process, not the ultimate goal. This means that students are in control of the connections they create, the solutions they discover, and the skills they develop from the knowledge they gain along the way. #Prosper4ward
A2 There are SO many picture books that wonderfully support the STEAM mindset. Last year, I read What Do You Do With an Idea?, The Book of Mistakes, & The Most Magnificent Thing to my 4th graders. #Prosper4ward#PISDEdtech
A2: As a leader of information literacy & research skills, it's important to collaborate with teachers and introduce them to different lessons/strategies utilizing STEAM and show how it promotes writing skills. #Prosper4ward
@lmturnerprosper answered this for Q1, but it could just as well have been an answer to Q2. If a kid is interested in something, he or she will be likely to read and research it on his or her own. #Prosper4ward
Q1: I think that STEAM offers students the chance to be engaged in what they are interested in. If they are incredible artists they should be able to use their skills. #Prosper4ward
A2. U need to communicate your thoughts, findings, and questions. Having strong writing skills helps to achieve this. PLUS when the top is is high interest it is easier to write about and therefore allows for more writing instruction @leilanski is awesome at this #Prosper4ward
A2 I love using cross curricular STEAM projects to spice things up. The best part about reading and writing is that you can do that with anything! One of our upcoming projects about the teen brain is STEAM-tastic #Prosper4ward
A2 In our geometry unit, Ss have a lot of tasks that require them to plan and design containers for a variety of situations. They have to write a proposal for their design and get it approved by their peers. They apply persuasive techniques from ELAR too! #Prosper4ward
A2: I would like to offer the students a chance to do a tactile lesson (like building something creative) then have them reflect about it by writing their take-away. #Prosper4ward
A2- We have students create stories through art or building with STEAM bins as part of the presenting process. It really motivates reluctant authors and encourages creativity and conversations with all students. #prosper4ward
A2: STEAM gives students the opportunity to the creative- with their research, with their collaboration, with their projects. This gives them the freedom to use words in many forms- I'd love to see/hear a song written by a student as part of a STEAM project. #Prosper4ward
I would absolutely love to use STEAM in my ELAR class! Hey @pflug327 I would definitely be interested in talking with you more about how to go about it! #Prosper4ward
A2: In third grade we talk about text features and how to use them when research. So through STEAM it allows for students to practices using those features in their research. #Prosper4ward
A2: Reading leads to thought, writing is thought made visible. STEAM requires a whole lot of thinking. Literacy integration is a more like a "must have" than a "nice to have". #Prosper4ward
A3: I think boys tend to lean towards STEAM classes but girls can too! Did you know that 3D printing is HUGE in the fashion industry! Educators just need to show all kids that STEAM is everywhere! #Prosper4ward
A2: I saw our amazing @windsongelem 4th grade students building some pretty awesome rollercoasters. The best part? They kept working to make their ride bigger, faster, and better through lots of trials! Cool stuff! #Prosper4ward
A2: Reading leads to thought, writing is thought made visible. STEAM requires a whole lot of thinking. Literacy integration is a more like a "must have" than a "nice to have". #Prosper4ward
A#2 I would like my Study Skills Ss to use STEAM to explore their strengths & weaknesses to set goals for themselves and find ways to achieve them. #Prosper4ward
The plan is for them to create some parent instructional videos like a webinar about parenting a teen in today's world. They will have choice in topics they cover. #Prosper4ward
A1 Steam mindset is all about the studentsâ own problem solving skills and trial and error. Itâs totally student centered because thereâs often more than one way to do things #Prosper4ward
A3: STEAM is probably one of the content areas that allow you to promote diversity the easiest. Tying in culture and inclusiveness ties right into the @ProsperISD Graduate Profile. #Prosper4ward
A2- we have students evaluate the products and determine which was the most successful and why. They journal their responses and then work with their groups to see if they can add anything to their creation. We purposefully plan writing opportunities as a team. #Prosper4ward
A1 Steam mindset is all about the studentsâ own problem solving skills and trial and error. Itâs totally student centered because thereâs often more than one way to do things #Prosper4ward
A3: In the Social Studies department, we like to use STEAM to explore different cultures and then compare and contrast them to our culture. #Prosper4ward
A3 I believe the first step to encouraging diversity in STEAM education is to first be informed. I shared this article a few weeks ago, and it still makes me smile! https://t.co/xuGgNUfs6B#Prosper4ward#PISDEdtech
@pflug327, you should link out to that STEAM toy you shared with me, and the woman who invented it and did the TED talk about it. She talks a lot about overcoming the "engineering is for boys" stereotype. #Prosper4ward
A2 I think when students are proud of their work they are eager to share their thinking (through writing) and when students are invested in a topic they are also motivated to know more about what theyâve been working with which drives them to read more about it. #Prosper4ward
A3 Whenever I come across a STEAM podcast, article, video, etc that pertains to our content I share it with Ss (usually as an attention grabber) I make sure to highlight the author, because then they see who is behind the work and how diverse the field is!#Prosper4ward
A3 I think we could encourage diversity in STEAM by making it clear that it's just acting on our instincts that we ALL have. We all question things, as any mom or dad of a toddler can tell you. That passion has to be fostered in ALL kids!!! #Prosper4ward
A3: I feel like the idea of personalized learning and inquiry naturally leads to diversified learning. If we focus on teaching our students skills and letting them use those to learn facts then we move them into the driverâs seat - 25drivers is pretty diverse #Prosper4ward
A2: I am working to add more #STEAM centered books into the #ccelibrary as well as #makerspace items to connect to student learning. Plus, the students can simply keep a journal online through @Seesaw, for example, or even a paper/pencil journal. #prosper4ward#PISDLibrary
How crazy is it that less than 1% drew female scientists in the 60s and 70s, but in 2016 it was 34%?! Not where it needs to be yet, but we are getting there! #Prosper4ward
Q1: I think it all starts with giving the student the opportunity to succeed first risk free. Creating a plan, designing, creating, testing, critiquing and then repeat. #Prosper4ward
A1 #STEAM lessons lead to more opportunities for our students to guide their own learning. It allows them to develop their own questions/wonders, collaborate & be innovative all while working at their own pace and creating growth mindsets! #Prosper4ward
A3: the beauty of #steam learning is that it can be differentiated to literally any learner!!! We are lucky to live in an age of so many great (and often inexpensive) options for all students to use and learn from! #Prosper4ward#PISDLibrary#ccelibrary#cockrellmakes
A1: The STEAM mindset encourages student to get creative and think outside the box! It allows them to think, plan, create, fail, recreate and try again. It promotes a grit and forces the kids to answer their own questions through collaboration and exploration! #Prosper4ward
A4 I would love to explore deeper into the "A" of STEAM. I don't have a lot of experience with the arts and am challenging myself to learn more! #Prosper4ward#PISDEdtech
A4: I've currently been working on my coding skills. I would love to host a coding club for students during the school day at our Elementary Campuses. Google CS has some great resources for this & our @PISDlibraries have great Makerspace tools! #Prosper4ward
A#3 By encouraging students to explore ideas and interests through modeling our own. Showing how excited we are about what we learn and getting them excited to explore their ideas and sharing them #Prosper4ward
A4 I would love to explore deeper into the "A" of STEAM. I don't have a lot of experience with the arts and am challenging myself to learn more! #Prosper4ward#PISDEdtech
A4 I would love to get better at coding. It's a bit overwhelming to me right now, but practice makes progress, right? I think I'll go onto a coding for kids site and start there! #Prosper4ward
A4-I am hoping there are some STEAM offerings in our summer PD. I would love some new ideas to incorporate more STEAM projects in my classroom. #Prosper4ward
A2: A battle worth fighting is to get student to actually read non fiction text when they are designing and researching especially with a book. I will continue to fight this battle tho. Writing I believe happens seemlessly when you are promoting reflective thinking #Prosper4ward
A2: So many literature-STEAM connections. Talk to your campus librarian! I enjoy incorporating STEAM, literacy, and makerspace in the library. A recent favorite- Read AFTER THE FALL and have Ss engineer a device to help Humpty get up the wall safely. #Prosper4ward#PISDedtech
A4 I am with @MandyatSchoolon this one. Definitely coding, specifically JavaScript. Whenever my husband sees me writing lesson plans he always gets excited and says âthe skill is so important for coding!â So I guess I need to get with it! #Prosper4ward
Yikes! I canât think of how I may have used STEAM in my Math class this year...Iâm totally open to suggestions though. When I taught Science this was a much easier question to answer. #Prosper4ward
A3 Steam lends itself to diversity naturally- all types of thinking, learning, processes are welcomed and encouraged. Open-mindedness is key. You miss out on a lot of learning if you have a closed mind. #Prosper4ward
A4: I know ZILCH about coding. I find it fascinating and itâs a completely different language. I loved having my Ss participate in @hourofcode this year.
#prosper4ward
A2: In first grade, we have to teach the importance of the process as well as the product. Through STEAM lessons my students document the steps they take and finish with a reflection on how they did. This way they have âself-helpâ notes for future projects! #Prosper4ward
This is where art and theater and music teacher are a great resource! So many things that Art does really overlaps with STEAM centered ideas. #prosper4ward
I am seeing A LOT of coding comments @psoneil and @pflug327 I think we need to team up on some stuff to get more coding lessons, resources, activities, etc out there? #Prosper4ward
A4: I want to learn more ways to encourage a STEAM mindset throughout the day. How can I push Ss to think critically and be creative problem-solvers wherever they are? #Prosper4ward
A4: I would like to learn more ways to bring in programing and coding to solve real world scenarios. I have always liked how the robotic program does that in their competition. #Prosper4ward
A2. I love connecting #STEAM projects to books we have read in class, especially during our fairytale/folktale unit! The kids love reading about their favorite characters and then reimagining an aspect of the story through hands on, collaborative STEAM projects! #Prosper4ward
A3: one thing that helped me is that the best end results are when the students create what they envision not when they create mine. A lot of the time more learning happens when the end result looks terrible. #Prosper4ward
I think people like me are a little intimidated by coding. Some teachers wouldn't feel comfortable implementing an idea in class if they weren't confident themselves! #Prosper4ward
Yes! Bring an end to "recipe projects" and give students the freedom to create and show their own understanding. That is where the real learning begins! #Prosper4ward
Thanks for letting me jump in the chat! Lots of great information shared tonight! Love collaborating and learning from my @PISDEdtech@ProsperISD friends! ##Prosper4ward
A3: educators can promote #diversity by showcasing EVERYONEâS strengths and skillsets. Doesnât matter your background, abilities, age, race, or gender-Ss are all innovative and creative thinkers and can apply their interests in a unique and original way.
#prosper4ward
A1: The absolute Beauty behind STEAM is the discovery in every step of the process. When I taught Science I would call it a âdiscovery freewayâ. If Ss got off on the wrong exit there was an opportunity for them to get back on and make adjustments to their trip. #prosper4ward
A2: I would LOVE to use STEAM as a writing activity. Ss can share their thought process, elaborate using procedural text, and enhance their creative writing! There are so many ways to use #STEAM activities in #literacy and #writing. #Prosper4ward
A3: EXPOSURE EXPOSURE EXPOSURE! Anyone can have a STEAM mindset if they are willing to have an open mind to the endless possibilities and grit to accomplish the task! Teach the many outlets of the STEAM umbrella and introduce people of STEAM from all walks of life. #Prosper4ward
Well then I am audibling to this year I am really looking into making more connection with music, art, and of course theatre. It does not lend itself to science but I want to find ways to make it work #prosper4ward
A#4 I would like to be able to support students with their projects in their classes. I would like to see more PD so I can understand the variety of ideas out there. #Prosper4ward
A3. The best part about STEAM is that the end goal has no 1 âright wayâ. Naturally STEAM lessons will become diversified by our learners. They will each have their own ideas & end goals and thatâs what makes the process so exciting!đĄ #Innovation#Unique#Prosper4ward
