I agree...when we have a sense of belonging, we feel safe and are willing to take risks just like in a classroom...if our Ss know they are part of the community, they will rise to the occasion. #rethink_learning

A1: I think it requires a community of people one can feel at ease and honest with. Belonging gives learners permission for genuine expression and learning without unnecessary fear of judgement. #rethink_learning
A3 - #rethink_learning
My goal from day one is to always bring a sense of community to class. We focus on positivity and relationships. Our activities allow all students to feel special, while getting to know each other. Lots of reflection is part of our class as well.

This is such great point. Lack of feeling the sense of belonging can absolutely be faked by some students. Our role as educators make that even more important that we focus on ALL students, not just the ones who seem to need that #rethink_learning
This is the second most essential time period needed in belonging. The first is the basics of child development in early years. The main difference...middle school kids can articulate it. #rethink_learning

A2: The sense of belonging is a basic need that when met, allows students to focus on less essential needs such as their school work and positive relationships. #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning Schools are full of subjects and P.E requirements and social cliques where many students DON:T fit in....constructing a network where one belongs is essential for all students
A2: when you belong, you can ask questions, challenge thinking, and state opinions in a safe environment - no judging - just more questions! #rethink_learning

Reflecting on consequences of students who don't have that sense of belonging ....
many schools pass by the important stage of building this and rush into a complicated system of punishment. Such a waste! #rethink_learning

Leslie popping in late from @GLISI in Atlanta where we are committed to developing powerful learning experiences to grow leaders. This is such a central insight about role of fear. No belonging ->fear response -> no openness to new experience/learning = ☠️ #rethink_learning

Someone earlier mentioned that teachers often feel excluded and have poor sense of belonging. So their brains are already in fear response. Tough to create a sense of belonging in classroom when you are in fight or flight. Even harder when subconscious. #rethink_learning
A3: When in the classroom I sought out books that reflected the heritage and cultures of my students. I also love the book "The Color of Us" for elementary #rethink_learning
A3: Have one on one conversations with learners about things besides your class. Talk to them in a way that acknowledges your and their existence outside of your classroom. #rethink_learning
A3: we know Ss don't learn if they don't feel safe/welcome, create a community in your school where Ss are not only working w/ each other in class but across classes - - have cross-class & cross-grade learning #rethink_learning
A3. In her book, @SaraKAhmed outlines the steps involved. On 1st day "begin with a read-aloud to help calm the nerves and focus the energy" Examples of picture book read-alouds below. #rethink_learning
In our Middle School, we do a lot to make sure there are many opportunities to mix things up and get to know others. New students are treated like Rock Stars
#rethink_learning
One more reason to give it a read! I have always felt educators need to learn m re about the brain function and it’s connection to learning. #rethink_learning
A3: we spend time in Sept playing games, completing icebreakers, team challenges, interest inventories but we need to foster the sense of #belonging all year not just in Sept and forget about it. #rethink_learning

Yes & just taking few steps back to find the "why" and working on that will prevent those behaviors that are leading to the punishments #rethink_learning
Many folks critique it as "soft." "Where are the results" from attending to a sense of belonging? Might be fewer ODRs, higher S and T attendance but might also just be a more human place to learn and connect. Would love to have a cortisol-o-meter! #rethink_learning
Q4. Educators need to support each other so we all feel like we belong. Share a positive message about belonging and caring for others in your #PLN. #rethink_learning

Leadership is full of paradoxes but vulnerability is probably the most game changing. We praise "hero" leaders but it's only human leaders who allow us to be ourselves, make mistakes, grow. Because they model the way. #rethink_learning#GLISIchat
