A1: A great leader to me means someone who knows when to step up & step back, why they should speak & listen, how to praise & reflect , it's not about them its about US. I try to lead by ex. by remembering what the goal is and that is requires teamwork to accomplish. #122edchat
Kristen here from PA. I teach 6th grade physical science. And I was given the lousy job of collecting choir costs. Just make sure you don’t have any chocolate cake in your pockets. I can’t promise it will be there when I return your coat at the end of the chat. #122EdChat
A1: Leadership includes having high expectations for others, creating ideas for positive change, and accepting failure as motivation. I'm a big fan of "Why not try this?" #122edchat#Culturize
A1 Leadership means acting with integrity (in thought too) and striving to be respected instead of liked. Do what’s right, not what maintains the status quo or keeps the peace - and relegates most to mediocrity. #122edchat
A1: Leadership is having a vision or something to contribute to the vision of the organization that you are willing to share your knowledge, skills and talents toward the pursuit of the vision and its goals. #122edchat#culturize
A1: Leadership means putting others' needs before yours and making difficult decisions for the good of the group. I try to lead by example by being a good role model for my students & modeling what it looks like to stand up for what you believe. #122edchat
A1: innovative & unwilling to stop! I get after the "tough" kids! Known for it now so they get sent to me! I love them deeply and they know that! Follow their successes after they leave my class! Refuse to give up!!!! #Culturize#122edchat
A1. Leadership is different for every person. You might be a leader through voice and sharing ideas. You might lead through creativity. Maybe technology is your thing? My point is, leadership is finding your strengths and sharing it with others! #122edchat
A1: Leadership means being willing to share ideas and your input. I always try to share any new ideas or apps with peers. If I can use it, someone else can too! #122edchat
A1: Leadership means to inspire people (Ts & Ss) to do something well (or better!!). It means commitment and passion. It means helping others be the best they can be. #culturize#122edchat
A1.1: Leadership is, essentially, setting the pace for the people that are running alongside of you. The leader carries the sign, encourages the pack, and paces the group to ensure that they can make it to the finish and celebrate the victory! #culturize with #122edchat
Cameron Carter from Columbus, OH joining #122edchat TONIGHT!!!! 1st grade teacher and @ncte Elementary Lead Ambassador! Our literacy director @LiteracyWCS always is motivating our teachers to ENGAGE in convos with others w/in district & BEYOND! We are a VILLAGE! #culturize
A1: I believe we ALL are capable of being great leaders! Leadership is serving others, actively participating in working towards a common goal, and being an example! My goal each day is to make sure my actions match my words! Walk the talk & do the work! #122edchat
A1: To me leadership has so many aspects. The biggest is listening and reflecting with people. Keeping the lines of communication open for all. #122edchat#Culturize
A1: Leadership is listening, reflecting and acting. I try to this every day with my students. I ask for their feedback/suggestions, take it in, and then take action. #122edchat
#122edchat Chritina I totally agree with the leading by example. As teachers we are pushed to model model model for our Ss, but really we need to be doing this in all we do.
A1: Leading means guiding people out of a desire to empower them and build them up, not dictate and break them down. It is my hope that I am approaching leadership with a servant's heart. #122edchat
A1: A leader is a LISTENER. He/She asks W.A.I.T- Why Am I Talking? A leader is FAIR. A leader is TRUSTING. A leader is EMPOWERING to others. A leader is JOYFUL and spreads his/her JOY unto others! A leader is ME! #122edchat#culturize@JoyceBronwyn@_on11
A1: Leadership means people who talk the talk and walk the walk. They have best interests of Ss at the core of decisions and can communicate. Can be any person, at any level. #122edchat
A1.2: How do I accomplish this? I attempt to operate as a servant in my leadership roles. I place the needs of my teammates and learners ahead of my own. If I finish the race and they don't, then I have failed. I don't need the wins as much as they do. #culturize with #122edchat
#122edchat. Leadership is modeling and being able to take other point of views and listen and respect those views. But also being able to give your point back it a respectful way especially if you dont agree.
A1: Leadership to me is about example and support. An admin that listens and supports their staff in what they are doing is a better example than one that takes charge all the time. #122edchat
A1. Leadership is doing what is right even when others don't necessarily see it that way. Must always do what is right for student well-being and learning. #122edchat
A1: Leadership comes in many forms but a lot would be done by leading by example. Ts and Ss both can show forms of leadership daily. Do this by guiding others, build them up, share ideas, etc #122edchat
A1~Leadership that models consistent, authentic mutual listening, limitless praise, support & encouragement, actions that help all others shine... day just try my best to serve others, focus and share the positives in life & be content when I go to sleep at night #122edchat
A1: #leadership happens a bit naturally for me so it is tough to define. But I see myself as a leader every day as I look to have viable suggestions for solutions to perceived problems before going to talk to #leadership in my school/district #122edchat
A1 - I used to think leadership meant bosses, admin, mgmt, etc. But have learned that leaders are anyone who inspire greatness in others. I try to lead by modeling kindness and a love of reading to my Ss. #122edchat#Culturize
A1: Leadership is being your authentic self and showing respect for EVERY person you meet! I remember that everyone benefits from being “seen” with a smile! #122edchat
#122edchat 100% Laura. I teach low socio economic Ss and Ts forgo the high expectations as an excuse for their lives. In my work my Ss have lead the world on occasions due to my level of expectation from them being unlimited - reach for the stars I say.
A1: leadership means that it isn’t about you. You are helping others and encouraging those around you to get better and grow and guiding them in that process. You lead by example and communicate to those around you #122edchat
A1: Setting an example with my actions and words. Meet others where they are and help them get to where they need to be. Build Everyone up around you so they feel listened to, respected, and valued. Make everyone matter! #122EdChat
A1: Someone who knows how to guide people & always has the best interest of the Ss. Always giving support & pushing us to be better. I try to set an example & take risks to benefit the Ss.
#122edchat#culturize@JoyceBronwyn@_on11
#122edchat. A1: Leadership is promoting/inviting others to what supports & provides opportunities for learners to thrive. Build capacity, work alongside, promote strengths of others, all with student at center.
#122edchat@casas_jimmy tells us "Building a community of leaders is how we create school cultures where everyone, from the youngest student to the most seasoned educator believes they have an obligation to be a CULTURIZER with the power to impact the school in some way"
A2: I empower Ss & Ts so that they begin to see themselves as leaders by encouraging, inspiring, motivating, collaborating, being supportive, showing flexibility, & celebrating the person they become through discipline, courage & commitment. #122edchat
A1- leadership is somone who is a positive ambassador for their school. They are professional, respectful, demanding the best from first themselves then those around them. They don’t worry about titles, awards or pats on the back. They focus on outcomes. #122edchat
A1: Leadership is listening, reflecting and acting. I try to this every day with my students. I ask for their feedback/suggestions, take it in, and then take action.
#122edchat#culturize@JoyceBronwyn@_on11
A1-Leadership means showing character and leading the way when things are the toughest. I like to lead by example by remaining positive and making people think through their complaints rather than just being negative all of the time. #122edchat
So true! We read this past week from @casas_jimmy that the title doesn't make the leader. Communication, follow through! Excellent qualities! #Culturize with #122edchat
A1: Leadership means people who talk the talk and walk the walk. They have best interests of Ss at the core of decisions and can communicate. Can be any person, at any level. #122edchat
#122edchat A1: Leadership is the inviting character that one shares with others to help everyone become their best version possible. I strive to engage all individuals by initiating conversations to draw people and their ideas into true possiblities.
A2 I assume that kids and colleagues can be leaders! There may not be pay, power, or prestige that goes with it, but one’s leadership, mentorship, willingness to share and be shared with is always valued by others. #122edchat
#122edchat@casas_jimmy tells us "Building a community of leaders is how we create school cultures where everyone, from the youngest student to the most seasoned educator believes they have an obligation to be a CULTURIZER with the power to impact the school in some way"
A2: LISTEN to their ideas! Our students may be young, but they have incredible thoughts in those little brains. Encourage them continuously and help them see their dreams through. #122edchat
A2: In order to unlock leadership values, we must first show people they are valued and help them to find their strengths. Then work on building their confidence so they feel comfortable to share their unique values with others. #122edchat
#122edchat Meghan you hit it, be a risk taker, failure as Jimmy says is part of the learning process, we can not be success without failing and how better than having a go at things we find difficult. This is the best model for Ss.
A1: Leadership to me is about example and support. An admin that listens and supports their staff in what they are doing is a better example than one that takes charge all the time. #122edchat
#122edchat At times we feel alone in our journey for excellence but there are always people that help you reach your goals. For me, my PLN here on Twitter are there to lift me up, to here my crazy ideas & to especially bring like minded people together as @_on11 does so here.
A2: Part of leading others is about perspective. I attempt to take Ts and Ss to my vantage point, so they can see their true value through my eyes. Reframing their success for them helps to build future confidence, both for kids and adults. #culturize with #122edchat
A2: Letting them know they CAN do it. Everyone at some point started from the bottom. The effort we put in to work our way up is key. Once Ss know they have someone rooting for them, there's no stopping 'em! #122edchat#culturize
A2: I trust them with certain responsibilities. I ask their opinion and I actually consider it. I may be the one who makes the final call, but that doesn't mean I need to make all the decisions by myself. There is wisdom in listening to others, Ss AND Ts! #122edchat
A2: Provide opportunities for Ss & peers to take on leadership roles! Step back & allow them to step up and take the lead, supporting along the way! Once they see themselves as leaders, it’s a game changer! They become actively engaged in being part of the change! #122edchat
A1: Leadership isn't exclusive to any1 person it involves everyone working 4 a better tomorrow. Setting an example, modeling, and working together. Leadership is in all of us but believing in your capacity that you have something to contribute #122edchat#Culturize#WeAreMCUSD
A2: Don’t be afraid to allow students to TAKE OWNERSHIPS of their OWN LEARNING! Allow students to figure out, first hand, the qualities EMPOWERING leaders must encompass in order to foster a thriving community! #122edchat#culturize#kidsdeserveit#tlap
A2 - We talk about making the class their own and never being afraid to take a risk. Ask lots of questions and then share your experiences with others. #122edchat
A1. Leadership is doing what is right even when others don't necessarily see it that way. Must always do what is right for student well-being and learning. #122edchat
A1: leadership means that it isn’t about you. You are helping others and encouraging those around you to get better and grow and guiding them in that process. You lead by example and communicate to those around you #122edchat
A1: Being a leader is about service, listening, communicating, building relationships and trust... It's not about a title, it's about actually leading. #122edchat#culturize
A1: To me, leadership means guiding others to help them succeed, being willing to listen to others’ ideas without judgment, and celebrating successes with them! #culturize#122edchat
A1. Leadership means acting with integrity, walking your walk and walking your talk! Lead by modelling, do what's right in situations's! Lead with kindness, give multiple chances, try to understand behavior and the why behind it. #122edchat
A2. I try to be positive and support in any way and all ways I can... even if I dont agree or think it will work, if it is not going to cause a major disaster, then let them do it, discuss and reflect. #122edchat
A1 Leadership means a few things to me. It's about bringing ideas forward for a group of people, but it's also sticking your neck out for what's right/best #122edchat.
A2: ahh! I see @DMooreSpanish tweets from last night in this answer. Ss must be able to take risks and know it is ok to fail at first. Giving students choice in assignments and voice (@Flipgrid)empowers them to take ownership in their learning & gain leadership skills #122edchat
A2: Giving Ss voice and choice in assignments, seating. Not needing to ask for bathroom or water fountain trips, and power to pause class with a "Give me 5" call out. Not giving all answers, but pointing towards other Ss who can help too #122edchat
#122edchat How much do we do to lead that does not include pay or power. Leading is about making a change, to communicate more effectively, by sharing ideas and by learning from each other all things that can not have a money value placed on it.
A2: I need to work on letting go the reigns more this coming year, as I empowered my "high" Ss more than my "strugglers" when all have ways to lead. #globalcollaboration was effective and I hope to do much more this yr. #122edchat#Culturize
A2: May seem like a repeat but giving opportunities and then supporting them through gives Ss the chance to experience success in leadership. That moment, the feeling of being able to lead successfully is thrilling and they will continue to look for those opportunities #122edchat
A2 Show Ss that we can all learn from each other and take turns being the "leader" we all have a voice & choice that can be powerful. Collaboration is best way to learn & grow. Give Ss ownership of learning too. #122edchat
A2: Shine a light on other people's strengths. Listen. Encourage. Uplift. Show kindness. Point out the leadership skills you see in them then cheer them on when they step up to take the lead! We are #bettertogether! #122edchat
A2: For my Ss I'm cultivating a Student-led classroom this year. We'll spend time up front learning about conflict resolution, active and passive management, and about respect following #LearnLAP model from @PaulSolarz For adults I listen and add positivity #122edchat
A2: highlight strengths. Ask people for help in their strength areas. Share resources. Collaborate. Compromise. Communicate. Be transparent about yourself and stay humble. #122EdChat
A2~ I refer to my Ss as leaders verbally, in emails & phone/text to their families...I encourage peers to take on leadership roles that they say feels like they are out of their comfort zone & support them in excelling at such ❤️ #122edchat
A2. I've started to allow for much more choice in the classroom. Making these choices allows for decision-making, an important leadership skill. I hope to work on creating opportunities for collaboration, allowing leaders to naturally use their gifts. #122edchat
#122edchat@casas_jimmy tells us "Building a community of leaders is how we create school cultures where everyone, from the youngest student to the most seasoned educator believes they have an obligation to be a CULTURIZER with the power to impact the school in some way"
A2-I empower my students to be leaders by owning their own learning. This helps them establish a positive growth mindset that can help them encourage others when things get tough. I also model a growth mindself in my own practice for them to use as an example. #122edchat
#122edchat "I don't think we can ever go wrong with over communicating if we are doing effectively" said perfectly by Jimmy Casas
Let's reflect on our own communication strategies. I know myself I shy away from communicating when I feel not heard. Something I need to work on.
A3: I would like Ss & Ts to see the impact that strong collaboration has on achieving positive results. Winning teams communicate effectively, are able to overcome obstacles, and reflect on the process. They realize the importance of the journey that they shared. #122edchat
I have already made a goal to have those difficult conversations early on rather than letting the "negative energy fester" until I reach a boiling point! #face2face#122edchat#culturize
A2: one way I try to empower my S’s is by showing them good examples and giving them choice. Also listening to them and not just trying to fix their situation for them #122edchat
Hi! 🙋♀️ I’m Kim, PK-6 Principal, from Wisconsin, joining in tonight. I love all the people I’ve met via Twitter who inspire me to learn & grow everyday! #122edchat
A1. Leadership is being present, REAL- listening - creating a family atmosphere where T’s & S’s are #empowered & have #voice & #choice - where risk taking & failure is encouraged #122edchat#Culturize
A3: I would love to start using the mobile office concept. They key to communication is often just being available and easy to find. You can design it for me @_on11 ! #Culturize#122edchat
A3: Communication can always be improved by making sure staff are constantly given the chance to collaborate, especially with those that are in different grades, content, etc. than them. #122edchat
#122edchat Exactly Stella, its about building a safe environment not just for our Ss but our peers. I myself struggle at times due to shyness but being in a safe environment clearly lowers my anxieties and makes me more comfortable to share.
A2: I think it's about letting go of some responsibilities and trusting. Also asking ❓and/or opinions but actually listening and taking what was said into account. That's a huge way to empower others. They feel like what they think/say does matter. #122edchat#culturize
Kathy! Welcome back! I love this! "Build Capacity" Wow. Yes, if leadership is not doing this, how will we create more leaders? #Culturize with #122edchat
#122edchat. A1: Leadership is promoting/inviting others to what supports & provides opportunities for learners to thrive. Build capacity, work alongside, promote strengths of others, all with student at center.
#122edchat. In a specialist role for gifted learners for the next couple of years. Network of educators I am privileged to collaborate with for the benefit of kids is extraordinary. Too many to single out just one! Lucky & grateful.
A3: in order to begin empowering others to lead, you must have a strong community of lifelong learners and you have to have respect for each other. #122edchat
A3.1: Less talking. More listening. Too often, when we are angry, we want to let the world know. We grumble to our neighbors and spouses. What if we slowed down, took a breath, and sought clarification before exploding? #culturize with #122edchat
A3: I think staff could always use more time to observe each other as well as share apps, websites, activities that worked well. An on going google doc or google classroom to share these ideas would be great! #122edchat
A2 Realize that EVERYONE has a strength in SOMETHING and it's believing that the person you are helping be a leader has integrity (because you believe in them.) #122edchat@
I would love more common planning between departments. We currently have planning with our teams, which is EXCELLENT, but I think if there were a magical way to have a day where we plan with departments that would be cool too. #122edchat
A3: Communicate. Communicate. COMMUNICATE!! It’s KEY to SUCCESS. I found the best way to promote it is to INSTILL meaningful conversations with students AND colleagues! Learn question & response stems that promote OPEN dialogue! #122edchat#culturize#TeachBetter#kidsdeserveit
A3: I think we as T’s just need to be honest and explain how we are feeling. We tend not to say anything and our frustrations then cause cracks in our relationships and our S’s know it and they respond differently. We all have to be on the same team. #122edchat
A3: Need communication to go both ways...not just down. For Ss and Ts to see they are in it together and find some school culture. Celebrate the fun and positives not fear whats new #122edchat
#122edchat Global Collaboration changed leadership 100% in my classroom Rhea. All kids have qualities to lead we need to provide them with the opportunities and the belief.
#122edchat A2: Be true and sincere with your conversations. When having honest conversations with others I ask why or how they arrived to their thought and how they think it will come to fruition. Do they feel they need assistance and what would that look like.
A3-It is really hard to encourage positive communication. it is so easy to be negative and join in on the complaints. When other teachers are complaining about a student, I usually like to chime in with some positive aspects of that student to even out the discussion. #122edchat
A3 here is a list.
1. Listen
2. Keep things brief and on point
3. Read body language
4. Share your passion in a positive way.
5. Model happiness
6. Provide meaningful feedback
7. Always allow for mistakes #122edchat
A3.2: @Flood1Tracy does a good job of listening to our "hurts" and "disappointments" without belittling our feelings. She is the first, after we hit a closed door, to help us find that window so we can get in. #culturize with #122edchat
A2. Trusting Ss to help other Ss who don't understand something, to have them guide them and show them how to do something. Encourage Ss to take risks in learning, try new things, and not be upset if they fail the first time. #122edchat
A1: Leadership means being a solution finder, a guide, and one who serves others. Leading by example means that what you value is easily seen by others by the choices you make and words you say. #122EdChat
A3-communicating how discipline was handled in the front office would clear up a lot of rumors, assumptions that are made due to lack of communication. #122edchat
A3: Constantly sharing what we're doing! Communication & more of it! Observing each other & what we do in our classrooms. We can learn so much if we start watching, listening, & collaborating! #122edchat
A3: I like the idea where teachers put out a sign that they are welcoming observations for the day. Such a great way to collaborate and open the door to discussion among colleagues. #122edchat
A3: Be REAL! Show vulnerability. Embrace the highs and the lows, then work together to get back on track when you get derailed. Look for the bright moments of each day and showcase those, not the negativity. Celebrate others in your communication! #122edchat
YES! We need to be open and honest about our shortcomings. We are models for the people around us, and encourage them to take greater risks! #Culturize with #122edchat
A1: Leadership to me means helping to bring out the best in others, helping people be the best they can be, helping others grow, providing opportunities for individuals to learn from one another, etc. I try to model daily, be their biggest cheerleader & supporter... #122edchat
A3: Listening to this whole piece about the Pixar Brain Trust and how it works for their company I think adopting this form of thinking. Feedback free of personal attachment to ideas, open candour and discussion. I like it and think it could be great for communication #122edchat
A3~ endless positive affirmations throughout the day starting in am... zero tolerance on negative banter in schools, esp. teacher’s room, commit to being a part of an environment that celebrates &expects success and is a soft place to fall w/the inevitable bumps #122edchat
A3: #face2face conversations individually (tho time consuming) at the BYO & ask for honesty and trust along with a plan to help make our community better than average. Check in at MYO and EOY for feedback too. #bwrsdREADY#122edchat#culturize
A3 Improving communication would mean people are more available to talk to each other. In our building people tend to communicate with their grade partners most often #122edchat
A4: Last year, I gave myself the goal of being more positive & I'm proud to say that I did it. This year, I'm adding on being more determined. I'm determined to help improve the culture by helping people set & reach their goals and forgive so we can move forward. #122edchat
#122edchat This quote from the book sums up my answer here "No matter how many team building activities you do or facilitators you bring in to help your organisations members gel as a team, the results won't be there unless you model what it means to be part of a team"
A3: I was pulled out of several team meetings because I was required to meet with my first year mentor and ended up lost on a few key items. Meetings need to be better prioritized IMHO. #122edchat#Culturize
A3: We all have to be willing to have those difficult and honest conversations where we can give and receive feedback in order for change to occur. #culturize#122edchat
#122edchat I think Peggy it is hard for us to own our failures, I myself am someone that needs to work on this. I have had to learn to use feedback to better myself rather than bring myself down. I show myself mucking up often in front of my Ss and I own it, to teach them its OK.
A4: This is a tough one. I'm hoping that offering innovative PD to engage even a few positive people at first will make others want to jump on board or at least spark curiosity. #122edchat#Culturize
A3: Communication is important! You must be open, honest with staff, parents, & community. W/o support everything else won't be as effective as you need it! Also if Ss if respect and trust they will come to Ts for help w/everything #122edchat
A4: Stop feeding into the drama and gossip. Even if I'm not contributing to it, simply being present and listening is allowing that culture to prevail. #122edchat
A4: I'm willing to be there, support, listen and take action to promote a positive school culture and support others in that goal. #Culturize#122edchat
A3- I think having genuine conversations with colleagues everyday is important- about their lives- not necessarily school. When that hard conversation has to happen you’ve built a relationship already! Important!!! #122edchat
A3: Absolutely! Listening is key when it comes to communication. Truly listening, not pretending with our own convo in our heads... A good to reminder: "think before we speak". It's ok to take a personal time out and address what's happening. #122edchat#culturize
A3.1: Less talking. More listening. Too often, when we are angry, we want to let the world know. We grumble to our neighbors and spouses. What if we slowed down, took a breath, and sought clarification before exploding? #culturize with #122edchat
#122edchat. Hi Michael! So great to be here. Grateful for how you are always so welcoming! Thank you! Yes, building capacity, to me, means honoring folks’ strengths, giving permisdion/encouragement to contribute these strengths to the common culture, then get out of the way.
A3: to improve communication go to the source of the concern. I'm working on being more approachable - I tend to give off a vibe of being intemidating if you really don't know me. I am also going to work on creating stronger personal realationships. #122edchat#Culturize
A4: Time, Support and Ideas. I don't know of anything else we can do to build an environment that works to thwart those who intend to break down the culture of the school. #122edchat
A4: If I'm expecting others to listen to my needs/wants, I need to be able to do the same for hurting people. Beyond this, I cannot feed into negativity that abounds in any organization. Find the positive people and build on their shoulders. #culturize with #122edchat
A4: This is a tough one, but I think always working towards a solution helps. Not everyone is going to love every idea right away and not every "no" means never - work towards finding solutions & ways to make things work for everyone. #122edchat
A2: Provide opportunities for them to share with others, reinforce the great things I see, support them as they try new things, and encourage them, encourage them, encourage them. #122edchat
I love how you included "servant". Too often this is missed by leaders. Many feel they should be served rather than serve others. Glad you are here for #Culturize with #122edchat, Kimm!
A4: culture killers make me cry - not gonna lie. Learning to care more about the long term culture of my district than my immediate response to feelings. I HAVE to let those little moments go to make a better learning environment for my students. #122edchat#Culturize
A3 Even though there is a push to email a lot of information, often missing is the piece where we have conversations at meetings, share ideas, listen to each other. Lots of hallway gossip happens because of this - causes divide. Slow down email and sending Google Docs #122edchat
A4: Help others find their tribe! Seek out the positive people and make time for them. Strengthen relationships fueled by positivity. Shine your light brightly, without apology! #122edchat
@khoggardGRT reminds us that "what we permit we promote" Not only do we want to walk away from the drama but let others know its unacceptable and you don't want to be part of it. #122edchat
Q3: Communications to all family in the building (teachers & staff) not just one group. Being consistent and going to the source of you have questions. Assume the good in all. #122edchat#Culturize
A4~continue with my time in modeling and living, breathing & educating our future via kindness, rigor & integrity...and sometimes when you have exhausted all means to combat the culture killers, you need to move on with your dignity intact #122edchat
A2. Continue to empower my kiddos with voice and choice. #passionprojects@geniushour continue to be there for them- cheering them up, raising the bar a little higher- smile and encourage❤️ #family#Culturize#122edchat
#122edchat I am hearing you Megan. I think we all make that mistake, listening in a staff room or in take over conversations in meetings. Its able finding the confidence to add our voice to limit this which can be really tough to do.
A4- I have to be honest. I am having a hard time answering this question because there are some people who are so negative and miserable that all you can do is ignore them and not let them get in your way of positively helping students #122edchat
A4 I always put myself out there to help - host PD, informal meetings, or 1:1. What do you need & want to do? Let’s find a way! I’m like a “fixer”, but in a good way. I encourage others to try things, assert themselves for Ss, etc. If I can pave a way for them, I will #122edchat
A4:I'm willing to share successes and failures from my own classroom to help others.I'm willing to drop nuggets of positivity things get negative.I'm willing to run quickly away when the negativity becomes thick.I'm willing to keep the focus on what's best for kids. #122edchat
#122edchat@casas_jimmy tells us "Building a community of leaders is how we create school cultures where everyone, from the youngest student to the most seasoned educator believes they have an obligation to be a CULTURIZER with the power to impact the school in some way"
A3: Constantly sharing what we're doing! Communication & more of it! Observing each other & what we do in our classrooms. We can learn so much if we start watching, listening, & collaborating! #122edchat
A4: Focus on the positives!!! Even when things get tough, look for the good in every situation!! If we find our tribe, continually strive to work together & do what’s best for our kids, then we can drown out the negative! #122edchat
So true! Many times I will *think* I know what the majority of Ts want to do/learn, but when I allow equitable opportunity for them to all share their thoughts, it's very eye-opening and guides my path in new directions! It also created greater buy-in for decisions. #122edchat
A4: I just saw a great article today about #complaining it was a challenge to not complain for 30 days. “It is hard to stop once you start so if you don’t start”...you won’t have to stop being a #culturekiller#culturize#122edchat
A5: 3 ways that I plan to implement the “small things” to help culturize my school are:
1) ensure that I am clear
2) encourage others to share their voice
3) empower others to own their ideas
#122edchat
#122edchat For me I have 4 things from @casas_jimmy Culture Builder #1 - "Conversation, investment, communication and action" They are so small but a needed reflection for me to move forward with my tea.
A3: Open door policy, get out of the office and be in halls, classrooms, etc., build trusting relationships, make sure you communicate in a variety of ways (visually, verbally), and listen. #122edchat
A4: I’m willing to invest my time & help/support others to change our culture & combat culture killers. It’s important 4 us as a staff to preserve & make better our culture 4 our S’s. If it’s not great amongst the staff how can we expect it to be great amongst the S’s #122edchat
#122edchat. A3. I need to be more willing to sit down and talk face to face not email or text. But sometimes that's just the easiest fastest way, but I know it's not the most effective way.
A5: 1) Reach out to students who have been on my mind this summer as soon as they are back, 2) Follow-up on PD feedback so teachers know they are heard, 3) Start an informal coffee drop-in for teachers with @sarahkyriazis#122edchat#Culturize
A3: I like the idea where teachers put out a sign that they are welcoming observations for the day. Such a great way to collaborate and open the door to discussion among colleagues. #122edchat
A4: keep an open door to allow anyone to stop in and chat - about what ever their need is. I feel I do this really well with Ss. I am going to take the extra steps to do this with Ts as well. #122edchat#Culturize
A5:
1) Listen > Speak.
2) Remain calm, and find a good balance for my emotions.
3) Find reasons to celebrate EACH DAY. With so many blessings, it's hard to stay upset.
#culturize with #122edchat
A5: To build culture I will find better way to recognize birthdays of staff and students, use a mobile office concept, and create a positive student referral form to celebrate the wonderful things our students do and connect with families. #culturize#122edchat
#122edchat Q4: Blast them with positiveness and HOPE of a solution. Learning that silence does not help change negativity, but speaking...beginning with even a whisper will help move myself and others to a better way of communicating.
#122edchat Melisa these pics have made my day. I think we need to rememeber why we do what we do and it for the kids. I have learnt over the past few years that providing them with a voice so powerful, they are the changemakers of our world.
A4. Be there for others, listen, try to remain positive, find people who fit into your tribe, ignore the naysayers, spread kindness and positivity! #122edchat
#122edchat "I don't think we can ever go wrong with over communicating if we are doing effectively" said perfectly by Jimmy Casas
Let's reflect on our own communication strategies. I know myself I shy away from communicating when I feel not heard. Something I need to work on.
A1: leadership is being a servant to your followers needs as well as a role model for them and a guide through the journey - I try to do this by leading w a kind heart first and a positive attitude #122edchat
Q4: Listen more to understand, be myself, share my smile, share my voice when I shouldn't be silent. Invest in others and show you care. #122edchat#Culturize#WeAreMCUSD
A5: Our student lead coffee cart gave free treats to staff after our state testing. I could see how such a small gesture could impact the day. Going to continue this sediment throughout the year. #122edchat
So thankful for the discussion tonite in #122edchat! You all are amazing, but not nearly as awesome as our mods, @JoyceBronwyn and @mrshurtteaches! Thank you for the thought provoking question lineup this evening! If you aren't already following these two incredible women, do so!
A5: 1. Attentively listen without an agenda other than collaboration.
2. Provide opportunites for others to lead.
3. Shine the spotlight on those trying things that are hard or out of their comfort zone and SUPPORT SUPPORT SUPPORT #122edchat
A4 I'm all in for making things better. Better for kids, better for educators. Refine things that work - revamp things that don't. I say no to the status quo! That is what I am willing to invest - even if it is harder to get there. #122edchat#culturize
A4: Time and energy! We need to practice what we preach. If we want things to change, we need to model what it looks like constantly. Focus our energy on our tribe, it'd be great if everyone had a tribe to show them the light! ☀️ #122edchat#culturize
A5: Be engaged with all Ss, not just those in my class, get better involved with Parents, bring them in more, and try to make people want to be at the school, want to teach and learn and be a part of something amazing #122edchat
A4: I want to be intentional about assuming that others have good intentions rather than reading tone where there is none or making assumptions. #Culturize#122edchat
#Culturize with #122edchat is back in action next Wednesday at 7PM CDT when #GoogleEI, @PHausTech, returns from LA to drive "The Mothership" and discuss Chapter 4. Tell your friends, alert the media, call your parents! Next Wednesday is gonna rock. Stay tuned for #fearlessedchat!
A4: this is a tough one...
1. Listen
2. Ask how I can help
3. Ask how they envision it differently.
4. Ask what if?
5. Offer solution
6. Offer my perspective
7. Bring in chocolate cake the next day
8. Follow up with, hey, are things better? #122EdChat
A5 1) As ELA Department Chair this year I’d like to have a variety of teachers share at our meetings. 2) Continue to host #inquiry#pbl gatherings for interested folk. 3) Continue to stay hidden if necessary (it keeps me quiet which is easier for others, lol). #122edchat
A2: giving them space to grow while making sure they know I am there to guide or help as needed. Also - listening to their needs and wants and working with that the best I can #122edchat
A4: Model what you want to see and expect. Be positive at all times. Find the good in the challenging times. Address anything impacting culture that needs to be addressed. Develop & foster positive, trusting, and supportive relationships. #122edchat
A5- help Ts with self care plans to manage stress, teach Ss how to handle stress more effectively. Always listen to others & keep the learning moving forward. #122edchat
#122edchat exactly Teresa Jimmy says this in the book, adding a spark of positiveness can add hope to a sinking ship. We need to counteract the negativity.
A5:
1. Listen to hear... not to respond.
2. Empower Ss to have their voices heard no matter what.
3. Encourage all to be more reflective in our work as educators, leaders, culture builders #expectexcellence#culturize#122edchat
A5:
1. Complete an act of kindness for at least two teachers a week.
2. Smile and greet people when you pass them in the hall.
3. Give grace to others when they are having a bad day.
#122edchat#culturize
A5 - 1) Remember that each student is an individual and you never know everything that is going on in their lives 2) treat all students with respect, no matter what 3) don’t fall into the negative convos about Ss with other teachers at school #122edchat
A4 What comes to mind is BUILD RELATIONSHIPS! Share and collaborate with others, encourage, don't put others down...it's a team effort. Favorite quotes when saw @gcouros few wks @FHSchools ago feel like fits with this #122edchat
Thank you for joining us today. It was tough to keep up with so many awesome ideas being shared.
@_on11 and @megan_hacholski you have set up a remarkable community here at #122edchat its such an honour to be involved and hang out with you guys.
That was the most intense 30 min of #Culturize talk yall!! #122edchat was on fire!! You guys rock! Keep after excellence this year! Lean on your PLN! It starts with US!!!! Thank you @JoyceBronwyn & @_on11 for encouraging me!!
So thankful for the discussion tonite in #122edchat! You all are amazing, but not nearly as awesome as our mods, @JoyceBronwyn and @mrshurtteaches! Thank you for the thought provoking question lineup this evening! If you aren't already following these two incredible women, do so!
A5: Speak as a family because we are one, focus on the Maslow's first, invest in everyone and set clear expectations for kindness and investing in each other. #122edchat#Culturize#WeAreMCUSD
A5: 1-learn all Ss names we are a k-5 building with 2 classes at each level. 2-make a point to see every adult daily & at minimum say Hi. 3 - smile more! #122edchat#Culturize
A5: Give handwritten, specific to note to colleagues 2) smile and greet people by name 3) Brag Tweet about the great things happening in my district #Culturize#122edchat
So simple! Working hard on this as I get caught in excuses with 180 but it pushes toward a new level of excellence. This hit me in #culturize#122edchat
#122edchat Q5: Make a conscious effort to use language with others to build their capacity and empower them to build the future they want to be part of. Allow the students to create areas they want to be part of.
Build hopful thoughts into everyday for every student.
#122EdChat. Thank you so much @mrshurtteaches & @JoyceBronwyn for great job mod’ing tonight! Thanks to all for obviously carrying some great banners very high!!
A5: 1) continue cross grade level PLC in my bldg
2) collaborate more with other Ts in district (sorry you said school but only have 3-4 Ts in each bldg)
3) take time to reflect and listen more often #122edchat
A3: I think we as T’s just need to be honest and explain how we are feeling. We tend not to say anything and our frustrations then cause cracks in our relationships and our S’s know it and they respond differently. We all have to be on the same team. #122edchat
A5.
1. Create family culture on 1st day ❤️
2. Empower every student voice/choice 🎤
3. Spread kindness throughout my family-building ,communtiy, worldwide
#122edchat
#122edchat A1: Leadership means being able to help with the small stuff so it does not become a larger issue. It might be more behind the scenes, but to those it is helping, it potentially could be a huge impact on them and their students.
Your words legit just made me cry! #Culturize right here! Everything you said! I need to print this and remind myself to get after it and also to love myself a little more and know when I’ve done what I can. #122EdChat
#122edchat A2: Provide opportunities! Sometimes leadership and academic confidence go hand in hand for Ss who are struggling. This year, a lot of my colleagues have had the opportunity to lead PD and it is always interesting and relevant to learn from a peer.
Spending the next hour reading through so many outstanding discussion answers. @_on11 and @megan_hacholski you should be commended on such a diverse community with so much goodness to share #122edchat
#122edchat A3: Listen to others and see what their ideas are and how they can be implemented. Having an open dialogue with colleagues can create an amazing atmosphere.
#122edchat A4: Continue to set up opportunities for staff to get together than are not education related. The more you know about who you work with, the stronger the relationships.
