I'm Angie from Brevig Mission. I teach high school Social Studies and Language Arts. The large-heartedness of Brevig Mission (my home for the last eight years) has definitely left an imprint on who I am. #akedchat
Hi Laura, thanks for hosting #akedchat tonight! I’m Sue in Juneau. A place that had a huge impact on me was my yard when I was growing up in Western Samoa! Loved climbing mango trees!
#AKedchat
Kristina Hunter, 1st Grade, Talkeetna. Casper, Wyoming was my where I started my training as a teacher and holds a special place in my heart.
Hi Everyone! Amanda here! I am the PL specialist for the Kenai Pen District. I live in Seward #AKedchat A place that shaped much of my identity is Kazakhstan where I served in the Peace Corps!
Hi Angie! I love how you capture Brevig Mission in your blog! I’m also so fascinated that you go to work in Shishmaref! I learned about it in my Alaska geo class... #akedchat
Happy to be at #akedchat tonight! I'm Tammy Morris, 21st Century Learning Specialist, based in Juneau. I lived in Ketchikan for 14 years, and finished raising my children there. Ketchikan is my heart-home, and it definitely had an impact on my identity!
A1 #akedchat I found that there were many places in a students' own community that they didn't really know about. They might have seen it, but really exploring it through different lenses hadn't happened yet.
A2: I've invite some local artists into my classroom to share their skills and ideas with my students. Most of the artists in Brevig use very traditional techniques and designs that are inspired by our environment. #akedchat
A1 #akedchat There's a cemetery across the street from JDHS in Juneau, downtown. I'm definitely going to explore that! Cemeteries can be great places to not only discuss history, but create awareness of ancestry and imagine stories to write!
I'm working toward writing modern Inupiaq legends with my Composition class. I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate a drawing or illustration component too. #akedchat
Yes! So important! I am pretty sure my 6 year old son, is only motivated to write when he can draw a place-based picture to go with his writing. #AKedchat
Maybe a children's book? or book cover art? #akedchat Such a cool piece to place the vibrant components of a culture into a different situation or time.
My class and I got to attend Athabascan Fiddle Festival when I taught in Fairbanks (SO long ago) We all danced to the music and the kids had a blast! #akedchat
A3: There are sooooo many layers to Alaska that we are hard pressed to figure out where to start sometime. Alaska current events is one arena that can lead to exposure to so many deep explorations that might otherwise be missed when sticking to a straight curriculum. #akedchat
The Yupik immersion program I visited in Anchorage made their own books using their own photographs #akedchat Photography is a great skill, especially in the instagram age!
One thing that continues to amaze me is how much talent exists in these small communities.
At the beginning of every school year I ask parents to write down the talents they are willing to share with our class. #AKedchat
I think that it is tough sometimes for people to state that they have a talent or some unique skill or knowledge. Students interviewing their parents can often teach the kiddos things that they didn't know about their parents AND give us insight into what they know! #akedchat
Creating books with photographs can be applied in so many culturally relevant place-based lessons! How-tos, historical, a-day-in-the-life-of, etc. #akedchat
I agree. We often don't realize that skills we have are seen as talents by others. Many times, the person with the talent needs to become aware of the impact they can have with that talent that seems commonplace to them. #akedchat Interviewing parents is a GREAT idea!
A4: This spring my students investigated where our freshwater comes from and brainstormed ways we can conserve water after we had a water shortage in Wrangell this winter. #AKedchat.
A4: We're studying immigration right now in US History. That can easily be related to immigration and migration to Brevig Mission throughout the years. It might help students see that it's not always easy to draw black and white lines about who should be allowed in... #akedchat
A4 #akedchat School budgets are issues in many communities right now. Students could gain an immense amount of skills, from math to critical thinking, by bringing those conversations into the classroom.
A4 #akedchat Juneau's Red Cross organization relocated recently due to their original location being subject to local natural disasters. Students could dive deeply in this investigation. Science, service, financial ...
A5 #akedchat I don't remember all the details, but a couple of schools in Craig (I think 3rd grade and a middle school grade) investigated water quality of local water sources.
I really love the @Flipgrid collaboration that @PintoBeanz11 & @jlabar2me are doing with their students. They are learning about their place (NJ & CA) and sharing it with their buddy class #akedchat

A6 #akedchat For those of you focusing on professional learning, like me, here's a resource I just found that is now on my To-Read list: https://t.co/rsORfNdUcC
That is a great example! I know my students seemed to learn more about Wrangell just by sharing facts about it with other schools on Flipgrid and during Mystery Skype.
