Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
Welcome to #21stedchat -Tonights Topic: Things you need to know as a pre-service teacher with guest host @nathan_stevens. We will do Q&A. Please introduce yourself.
Exactly. You have both shown a great example of the complexities of asking appropriate deep questions to illicit further learning through inquiry. #21stedchat
A1: Be nice to the office staff. They are your lifeline and you gateway. And, I every school I’ve been in, amazingly hard working people who care about all our students. #21stedchat
Ss need to get to know you too. Chances are pretty good they know each other. If you have them intro themselves, intro yourself as well. And you’ll be very tired after that first week is over (still happens after 13 years). #21stedchat
A1: New teachers need to know and feel as if they are part of the team. It is also important for them to know about the practical things (where to get copies, where to find forms, etc) #21stedchat
A1 Everything other than the actual teaching is a procedure. Model, teach, practice, so that students know exactly how to do everything without asking. The clearer those procedures, the more time you can spend on learning and less on classroom management! #21stedchat
A2. Learn the set up for the online gradebook or find someone who can help with that (its fun trying to fix it at the end of a term). Try out whatever tech the Ss have (tablets, chrome books) and if possible get a student account to see it from their perspective. #21stedchat
A1: The most important thing to do the first week of school is get to know your students and establish strong procedures and classroom routines. #21stedchat
A2: All teachers, new or experienced, need to@have an openness to Tech and a basic understanding of word processing and spreadsheets (normally, Word and Excel), and email. (Although, this is minimum) #21stedchat
A2 You'll want to know your SIS and other systems required for your job. Then you can explore #edtech your district uses and grow from there. If you are lucky and have an LMS, start with that! #21stedchat
A2: At my school we do everything through Google Drive so being familiar with that is helpful. You must also learn PowerSchool quickly to be able to do attendance daily and to access the gradebook. #21stedchat
A3. To create the environment together such as classroom rules etc so the students have ownership too. This will help with classroom management. #21stedchat
A3 Ask a peer teacher, they will happily share. Elementary CM looks and works differently than HS. Focus on teaching procedures first and the CM will follow naturally in most cases. #21stedchat
A2: Pre-service teachers need to be able to use online platforms like #edmodolove, Google and Microsoft and social media for teaching and building PLN's. #21stedchat
A3: My advice is to always write desired procedures and routines down step by step. Then teach them step by step to students. Practice often the first few weeks of school. #21stedchat
A3: This is a tough one. You need to be true to yourself. Don’t have mom or dad voice. I’m hoping you won’t send every issue to the office. You lose your authority and have given the admin complete control on the resolution. And you might not like the result #21stedchat
A3: Knowing that expectations should be developed with students; rules should promote positivity, sympathy, and empathy. Knowledge of #PBIS will help too #21stedchat
My New Teachers page https://t.co/HSzJ2mFK06 Advice: Be firm, fair, consistent, caring & show your passion for learning. When the bell rings come out facilitating learning. Veteran teachers need to be there to help, support newbies & get them connected here too. #21stedchat
A4 Support your Ss being content creators. Much can be done with the devices they already have, more with some school devices an a green sheet. Make a quiet corner/area in the classroom where recording can take place without being disturbed! #21stedchat
A4: We have moved from "How do I hit record and put on my computer?" to more "How do I edit this?" or "How do I add this special effect?" Ss are moving from only filming to now taking on the role of an editor. It's exciting! #21stedchat
A4: New teachers should know how to screencast, use Skype and to use video and F2F online. They also need to be aware someone might be recording them to post to Snapchat - Be aware of your surroundings #21stedchat#edmodolove
Absolutely. Green screens open up huge worlds of creativity for Ss. Plus apps are cheap. DoInk is 3$. Much better cost of entry than it used to be! #21stedchat
A6 Frequently and positively. When I have to call Ps I make sure I make at least 1 positive call per 2 negative calls, more if possible. Better to associate you with good conversation, builds relationships! Emails work too. Match the age of the parents to the media. #21stedchat
A5 the main thing is to have a variety of ways to communicate. Send out positive messages as much as possible. Parents want to know what is going on in class. #21stedchat
Great chat tonight everyone. Thanks @nathan_stevens for moderating. Remember to follow those with ideas you find interseting or challenging! #21stedchat
