WELCOME to - Topic: What are the topics that should be discussed at faculty meetings that could change the culture?
Welcome to ! Tonight’s topic: What are the topics that should be discussed at faculty meetings that could change the culture?
Good evening how's summer going for you?
I guess we should identify what is usually shared at faculty meetings and decide if they help your school culture.
It’s time for - Topic: What are the topics that should be discussed at faculty meetings that could change the culture?
Good evening Nancy... warm enough for you?
Good leaders don't make excuses. Instead, they figure out a way to get it done.
yes. indeed, rocky for you...

Forgive my slowness of responses tonight, I am having some trouble with the internet tonight.
woot woot... WELCOME AMBER !!
cool! so what is it that you've gotten done?
I would love to hear about your experiences with faculty meetings that have made a difference in your building.

so william.... what goes on at a typical faculty meeting at your school?
THINK ABOUT YOUR FACULTY MEETINGS…what do they say about the future of your school?
RT I would love to hear about your experiences with faculty meetings that have made a difference in your building.
Team-building activities during faculty meeting influence culture by strengthening relationships.
Professional conversations (& I mean conversations, not lectures) during faculty meetings also influence culture.
WHEN TEACHERS talk with other teachers about teaching the teaching of all teachers improves. Make faculty meetings about teaching.
we usually discuss how to build systems of support for both students and teachers
lately it has been as necessary for f2f or required for DOE purposes.
team building means different things to different people. What makes yours culturally significant?
We usually discuss current realities or use them as a means to learn instructional strategies
is that on a whole faculty level or is it in teams or grade levels?
We do activities that can also be used w/students to build relationships. Model & share.
cool... so what's that say about your school culture?
on a leadership team level
WHEN TEACHERS at a school lack common language / shared understanding of good practice, not much can happen at faculty meeting.
well... I give up. What do the kids see in what we do?
By current reality I mean DATA
ONE OF THE BIGGEST IMPEDIMENTS FOR IMPROVING SCHOOL CULTURE —> faculty meetings. Just saying…
I would argue BAD faculty meetings, not all faculty meetings.
I think it says that our admins thought our time was valuable. Most meetings were done at the team or grade level.
Part of high quality faculty meetings should be BUILDING that common language.
okay... what percent of faculty meetings are BAD? And how many good faculty meetings have actually improved culture?
nice... would everyone at your school are with your thinking?
Can’t speak to the percentage of bad mtgs, but I believe our faculty mtgs have built camaraderie & common purpose.
well... part of the field of education should be fostering a common language...
Tchrs have said they appreciate the sharing, the transparency, & the opportunity to become a cohesive faculty.
Takes a skilled leader to do that, Nancy.
I have used Team Initiated Problem Solving TIPS to help structure meetings for teams.
Don't you think that would be difficult with the diversity of schools/contexts we have.
you can't get everyone at a school to believe that we need air to breathe ;)
I'm sure they do. Teachers want to be part of good teams--they want to collaborate to teach well.
cool... and what is the ultimate outcome of the sharing, transparency, and cohesion?
A healthy sch culture that believes in doing what’s best for students & is willing to take risks w/new ideas.
Good service to children.
The meetings are the most informative w/ practical tips to apply now. https://t.co/cYCBhTQBsM
WHEN TEACHERS talk with other teachers about teaching the teaching of all teachers improves. Make faculty meetings about teaching.
When you create smaller teams w/i a school then you get more agreement.
well Rene... too often, whether a faculty meeting is good depends on the eye of the beholder.
harder to change school culture one team at a time though.
Culture is changed by feelings & emotions being shared! Tough stuff but critical!
Most attempts to improve school culture via faculty meetings… get lost, diverted or disrupted. Why is this the case?
Team-building needs follow thru; too often it is a one-off.
Is the faculty meeting teh best place for admins to influence school culture?
If you love books, reading and kids, I have something to share tomorrow that you are going to love. Stay tuned!
TED_ED: Thanks to SensAbleLrning for co-hosting!
Fact: teachers and schools are poorly served because Field of Education fails to foster agreement...
Over time education has created more language to make this difficult! All humans speak emotion https://t.co/M6OyeEkObU
WHEN TEACHERS at a school lack common language / shared understanding of good practice, not much can happen at faculty meeting.
hey Amber check out team initiated problem solving TIPS. It actually has a research base

when we can't even decide on the purpose of education, it isn't surprising.
Faculty meetings should be productive in instructional design and methodology. Everything else can be emailed.
WHAT, IF ANY, TOPIC IS MORE IMPORTANT FOR FACULTY TO DISCUSS THAN STUDENT LEARNING? How often is that topic discussed at meetings?
... no voice, no spot at the table, nothing...
so, what makes ISTE the best choice for deciding tech standards for students?
Using the co-workers mac book to be online. I am loving it. I need to upgrade ASAP!
Good Teachers do what they do because we CARE about students & future! This is our common language!
Freq feels like admin has already id the problem and designed the solution w/o input from teachers and staff.
Really? Maureen, really? If children getting good service then why such appalling results year after year?
Faculty meetings should be a place for discussion that has give & take, disagreements, & consensus. It's not a lecture.
Sorry to diverge as I agree for the end point! But a department is there to create opportunities not learning https://t.co/c6QVFid5Qc
WHAT, IF ANY, TOPIC IS MORE IMPORTANT FOR FACULTY TO DISCUSS THAN STUDENT LEARNING? How often is that topic discussed at meetings?
... so why don't they form teams? Collaborate?
... no voice, no spot at the table, no napkin... no nothing.
The students role in collaboration with teacher/mentor to create their learning journey within opportunities!
Our tchrs work in (mostly) well-functioning teams & collaborate often; also form interest-driven groups.
Yes, but too often leadership doesn't hold a meeting for that purpose.
The ultimate outcome is the learning but not really the focus of the department!
is culture easier to change from student up or teacher down?
When you enter a faculty meeting and the chairs are in rows with a lectern, it's a presentation, not a meeting.
cool... for what purpose? What outcomes attained as a result of the teamwork? Progress made?
I don't think the appalling results are true for all school systems--what data source?
Also I signed on late due to a WIFI issue so I may have missed initial posts/conversation.
My team can't agree on homework. It seems stuff like that really affect culture. If only they could see their errors ;)
A meeting is an assembly of people in a community to discuss, share, & listen to ideas; it's not to impose rules & logistics.
Are we going to run our schools as compassionate communities or are we going to run them out of fear? https://t.co/8jhpXkJRQB
... look around! do all students at your school achieve mastery? If not, how much reteaching must you do?
it would seem that homework is a huge culture pivot point.
There will always be work to do, but we’re getting decent results & continue to seek ways to improve.
Faculty meetings should be about teaching https://t.co/qAeKEhwy1B
WHEN TEACHERS talk with other teachers about teaching the teaching of all teachers improves. Make faculty meetings about teaching.
I can only truly control myself, so I'd say from the teacher *over* (vs. "down") to the students.
Great insight https://t.co/vxdEObVwfO
My authority in the classroom doesn't come from dominance over my students it comes from responsibility for my students
both, teacher relationships are huge cultural pivots.
locally teh BOE decides what we teach, but they are usually rubber stampers :(
Like Nancy, our results overall are very good. We are a privileged system though and I'm aware of that.
If only the faculty met to have a heart to heart at a meeting with pre-reading given out before hand.
always down, we have the power even when we act like it isn't that way.
Spot on ! https://t.co/NX0MsALd8m
Giving students self-confidence is by far the most important thing a teacher can do.
so ask yourself... are the results the result of something you do, or what the students bring with them... ?

I about got lynched 15 years ago when I suggested we stop teaching cursive (district level mtg) Reason
I believe it’s a combination. No doubt the students bring gifts to the table, but tchrs polish the gifts.
What if students attended faculty meetings on setting the school's culture?
almost always it is about student behavior, drives me crazy.
Students' voices are especially important in determining school culture.
Thanks. ... you're generous.
Leadership is also responsible here, & meetings need to engage others to come to a shared understanding.
looks can be deceiving :)
It began w/ways for faculty mtgs to influence culture then evolved to outcomes. :)
Always interesting to see how a conversation travels.
key is looking closely at the processes used to share, develop our collective craft
I think I am the old guy now in the team. I guess I need to step up and make that happen.
authority ... I am not a fan of that word ... Learning isn't about power it is about passion
We hear you. Sad that suggestions/feedback are taken as threats.
I've seen ed likened to chaos theory--not surprising.
Joining late my apologies. I agree wholeheartedly with Mark Talking about good teaching is key!
Perhaps in a rare occasion, but not likely in this arrangement.
ordinarily I am a big fan of chaos, just not when it has a negative impact on the kids.
curious, so... what party of chaos theory applies to education?
1)organizational needs 2)culture they want to create 3) develop vision 4) ideas to reach vision https://t.co/9OXiRoXGv3
Welcome to ! Tonight’s topic: What are the topics that should be discussed at faculty meetings that could change the culture?
Agreed. Reminds us of, "Don't shoot the messenger." :)
I am a fan of good process, but I recognize that ed has a chaotic factor to it just like life.
I'll have to find that post--I did a little research on that once.
One needs to have some authority in their classroom or there will be no respect.
When all Ts at the school understand what good teaching looks like it curtails many issues such as behavior.

try to accept the "chaos part" look for good process where possible. Idea share can use good process.

Agree that impacting Ss learning very important and goal of teaching well.
I really like these tips.
What if the conversation on changing the culture of schools focused first on the principles of architecture and design?
I don't start student teaching until the fall. This pretty much sums up my experience so far: https://t.co/UUvDPFNti0
Often Ts reference bad teachers as the problem. Yet we allow it by not doing our part to change their practice.
