Which other states use that Young Reader Medal voting motivation?
simple and direct. The personal hook is a significant "velcro" tool.

Missouri has book awards for elementary, middle, and high school levels.

How do you stage the Mock Youth Awards?
nice! Our county tourney is the first week of March for High School.
Now that sounds fabulous. Just bookmarked it to check it out after
A3: Practice read-aloud skills w hs students - have them read to es students. They feel like rock stars and improve own read skills.
Does anyone know of an exciting, newer, mystery series for grades 3-4? .
With Geisel (grade 1) and Newbery (grade 5) it was a 10 week project. I'm lucky to have a flexible elem library
A3: Hoping to launch library Makerspace soon. Also building centers for a Centered Library.
A3: Again with "friends" at ALA and local bookstores our kids were blessed 2 years ago with a poetry visit https://t.co/4jDiNYRhnA
just began a small MakerSpace at our middle/high school library in January.
Let's reflect and dig a little deeper; What was it specifically that (perhaps) lit a light in students minds and memories?
How many participants still hv fixed lib schedule? Curious...a friend is writing article about how she persuaded admin to go flex.
fixed at my elementary; flex at my middle/high
I've got a blend, thanks to a small school and teachers who leap at opportunities like WRAD and Dot Day
Q4: Let's reflect and dig a little deeper; What was it specifically that (perhaps) lit a light in students minds and memories?
Regular schedule with open checkout times in between classes.
Q takes me to the emotional hook: meeting the author, sharing personal emotions and work and connecting 2 author through txt
Their abilities to engage and take charge of the moments. It was centered around their choice.
when I was in K-5 (last 14 yrs) I had fixed but many open times for flex - thx to sm school size
CHOICE! You're speaking my language! That is powerful stuff!
Gamified literacy at our middle school 350 students played/1000 first try! Book reviews, book trailers, read alike lists & posters
"Take Charge" is the real deal. Student-centered learning sticks. Skillful teachers stretch and support, not direct
A4: has always been the personal connections, letting students have a voice, offering them a safe place, encouraging their interest
A2: Feels like an injustice if Ss aren't connected to certain characters before they graduate from our schools.
thx to you and all who answered!
A4 Engaging. Innovative. Challenging. Connects to Ss world.
A4: "That could be me" while reading, "I could do that" when seeing a tech project that is within skills or reach of Ss
If she needs a quote from a principal who is so pro-flex at k-5 mine will do it. He loves our library program
A4: Connecting the story to something they can relate to.
Problem-based learning helps my kids connect to literature. Empathy
A4: Kids remember when we've made them feel special, "seen" them for who they are and what they like.
One ss asked Caroline K , "What is that book you held in this photo" CK: "In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines..."
A4: Letting them be a part of our library through book requests, recommendations, etc.
A4. We allow free Ss book choice in our library.NO AR LEVELS allowed!!! ;-) After so much regulated in the classroom, Ss love choice!
RT A4: Letting them be a part of our library through book requests, recommendations, etc. . Power to the Readers!
A4 Meeting author rock stars in person via face to face or Skype makes everything so much more memorable
I post games on the library wall. Latest game - match the teacher to her favorite book. Kids want to know what we read.
A4: Right-o and cyber visits open up the possibilities that $ (of face to face) limit. Who have you Skyped?
A4: Student voice & ownership: THEIR library. Not mine. Ordering what they want, offering activities & a safe space always
agh! The dreaded AR levels! I feel your pain!
Kids leave me book recs. That way they feel like it's a two way street and another way for me to see what they are reading.
Time flies when we're having fun, eh.. Don't get me started on Levels....(but I am doing a presentation in April if you have input!)
A4. On our library TV-we've featured pics of the Ts holding either their fav book or the book they are currently reading. Ss love it!
Book prints are neat too. I post these in the hallway. Students can view the books that shaped their favorite teachers.
When they ask for a certain book, you gotta move heaven and earth to get it for them! 😂
Q5:Have you seen Inside/Out? What determines which memories go on to deep memory?
Q4 students presenting their creative book trailers convincing peers to read that book-creating larger reading community is powerful
absolutely! & nothing beats the delight when the book lands in their hands!
Too many to name! This year already we skyped with 6 Newbery contenders and 4 Geisel contenders and more!
and much as I love my Indie Bookstores, got that Amazon Prime as next day shipping rocks when rapid response is critical
love this idea! Typically, what are your prizes?
A5: deep emotion. Feeling something so much that it is imprinted forever
A5: I love how that film lets characters roll memories in their hands, reflecting then moving the moving ones. What brilliant visual
A5: I think it is the emotion that is attached to the memory. How you felt when it happened.
Yes-my 28 yr daughter wanted to see it when she came home for holiday.I think it's emotional connection to events, circumstances, etc
Agreed. Book talks that connect the most are those where the student or teacher has personal connection to book.
love it! I thought they were putting a ticket in the crayons.
A5: What other books/films help put memory in such kid-friendly terms?
A5: Deep Emotion. Had a reader finish Wonder and was very emotional about what to read next. I pulled out Auggie & Me... relief.

Final Question coming soon!
Final Question coming soon!
sometimes you're not ready to let beloved characters to! I had HS Ss who would imagine what characters were doing
A5: How are we to know lasting memories of our students? work 2 plant seeds of love for books and stories, empathy for characters.
Just got home from a PTO meeting but will catch up on and if I can.
I was a solo libn when in K-5 - reach out, visit other libns, find volunteers, and involve Ss in work of the library :)
A5: Something that consumes you. The birth of small obsession. Being 17 and reading Jane Eyre for the first time....
Use Twitter as your PLN!!! Stay connected with the people talking books and the people talking best practices.
Solo to district? School? Life? This chat community shows us as members of a chorus...but solo work has its high notes, too
FQ: What are you taking from tonight’s chat? How will you make sure your lib makes memories for students that go on to deep memory?
Love that "small obsession" student-driven passions
Q6: What are you taking from tonight’s chat? How will you make sure your lib makes memories for students that go on to deep memory?
I am a solo librarian in a brand new high school.
FA: a reminder to do more (daily) book talks. Share all these books I'm reading every chance I get
Focus more on the emotional connection. Giving the gift of reading for fun will set them up for more successes later.
A6: Leave time to review, reflect and "handle" the memories of Ss circulatioin log, library lessons from the year thus far
FQ: I am going to try and make more connections. I want to choose books to read that will inspire & leave an impression
We are lucky to do the work we do. Thanks everyone for the lively and memorable conversation tonight
volunteers are lifesavers for us solo librarians.
A6: Continually building relationships and listening deeply to Ss.
8:59: Thank you for join in the convo tonight! Next month _______ & ________ will be your moderators! Good night friends!
