A1: Storytelling can be activator for a lesson, a way to get Ss engaged, a vehicle for increasing empathy https://t.co/U6YddxPasm
-
-
Yes! Are there certain subjects when you use storytelling?
-
-
education is centred around stories. Children have grown up listening to them. Key to education IMO
-
-
-
Great point! Listening first to be listened. Often overlooked...or overheard
-
yes! I've taught science, math, social studies & language arts. They all use storytelling! https://t.co/XKxznhfmjB

Yes! Are there certain subjects when you use storytelling?
-
A1 The basis of humanity is rooted in storytelling. Telling stories & receiving them are the heart of communication.
-
Totally agree! Do you think educators listen enough to students?
-
Yes! A way to honor culture! https://t.co/SImYsigDLL

I agree! Are there particular stories children grow up listening to that shape their education?
-
No myself included. We get busy overwhelmed. Important to constantly remind ourselves. https://t.co/5MX6kqVkr9

A1 Storytelling is powerful because it enables simultaneous teaching of knowledge and of creativity.

Hi! Becky from Venezuela, CM g
-
I don't think we listen enough as a society, just verbiage. It's difficult to get Ss to truly listen to one another due to this
-
Stay tuned! You're foreshadowing an upcoming question! :)
-
-
I love this. Do you use storytelling often to teach or learn?
-
with storytelling, I always talk to my Ss about "Danger of a Single Story" which is the basis of perspective & listening
-
Hi Becky! Greetings to you and Venezuela. I miss it there!
-
Yes! How do they respond afterwards?
-
Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
Q1 storytelling gives context to students it makes what we do more meaningful and valuable...
-
recently learned what makes Good story in 1 culture can be vastly different n another. not plot structur https://t.co/XWiUOVsd3Y
-
-
I agree! Are there particular stories children grow up listening to that shape their education?
-
-
Aghhh, late again! Pip from NZ here.
-
conversation always turns to stereotypes/archetypes & their role in stories/storytelling. ❤️ that it's across cultures
-
Hi Pip. Thanks for joining us! We just started on Q2
-
-
-
It is important to keep this in mind. How do we remind ourselves and others of different points of views?
-
A2 when we share our stories, we create bonds. With colleagues. With ss. Ss with each other. Collaboration is vital.
-
Context so important in all that they do to make meaning of it!
-
connection like this today reminds us 😍 https://t.co/FyNwdrYRqx
-
-
It is important to keep this in mind. How do we remind ourselves and others of different points of views?
-
Joining for the last few minutes! Join me!
-
I'm typing from where I share the same feelings of the removal of movement and mindfulness in class.
-
-
by storytelling you give your Ss a setting, a place to start, something to relate to, a way to communicate
-
A2 collaboration is good but the curriculum is crowded so how do we make space for our Ss to be authors?
-
You are absolutely right! Thanks for sharing.
-
A2 I think we need to remember that our stories create tolerance and understanding. I know your story then I know you.
-
Will from Canada joining late. Hey Yau!
-
Collaboration gives students an audience-a reason to be precise, detailed, accurate, and more importantly someone to connect to!
-
Thanks for joining us! You're right! Do most educators recognize it's an eduwin?
-
Empathy is why I am an English teacher and teach literature. https://t.co/8GapZuSmMd
-
-
A2 I think we need to remember that our stories create tolerance and understanding. I know your story then I know you.
-
A2: Collab means Ts & Ss both learn the story behind the subject which increases understanding & empathy https://t.co/uNrudbBcHb
-
A2 Storytelling seems very fluid. As students are told stories, they are free to expand upon, add to, & alter as desired.
-
Hi everyone! This is David! I used to teach MS special education! Glad to be here
-
My ss favourite day is Friday Story Day. Yes, I'm an English teacher, but I'm a humanist too.
-
This is an excellent question! Thoughts? https://t.co/utgXxsdX5p
-
-
A2 collaboration is good but the curriculum is crowded so how do we make space for our Ss to be authors?
-
Not yet, but it's getting there. https://t.co/f2QXSRsHdC
-
-
Thanks for joining us! You're right! Do most educators recognize it's an eduwin?
-
A2: What a great Q! I heard recently that collab. learning is really about learners working together to shape their own ideas!
-
Agree this is why we have scenario based tasks
-
Great point, Pip. How do persuade others to listen to your story if they're not listening initially?
-
In medical education I think medical students should hear all sides of the story: nurses, patients, ethicist, mds etc..
-
I feel both when we (along with the sts) feel embedded in our discussions and listening to each other. https://t.co/NmFAjdt7H9
-
instead of literary analysis I use creative writing. Ss mimic style use lit devices https://t.co/6Adxo3l2DI
-
-
This is an excellent question! Thoughts? https://t.co/utgXxsdX5p
-
-
A2 collaboration is good but the curriculum is crowded so how do we make space for our Ss to be authors?
-
we rejigged our department's whole programme so ss can write and tell their stories. This is the basis of learning
-
Hi Megan! Yes! Do you foster this in the classroom or globally online? Connection is key!
-
That's what we did at with Dr. Jimmy Lin. Value in all voices. https://t.co/38y6nVDBlz
-
-
In medical education I think medical students should hear all sides of the story: nurses, patients, ethicist, mds etc..
-
But isn’t this lost when the children grow and go into secondary school?
-
Yes, how vital is role of revision, feedback, interaction when storytelling?
-
I think we are programmed to listen to stories. But our ss can forget this skill. Need to be delib taught.
-
it can be in some lessons .... Our job to keep the buzz alive
-
A3 Mindfulness via self reflection contributes to creating a commitment to lifelong learning
-
and through such a collaboratiom the md student will have a global story and integrated view of health care
-
Hi David. Thanks for joining us. We are wrapping up Q2 in a few minutes.
-
In England we have lots including Robin Hood and locally we have the Wise Men of Gotham
-
Ooh, Friday Story Day? Tell us more about it! How have your students responded? https://t.co/vHz7LNchfq
-
-
My ss favourite day is Friday Story Day. Yes, I'm an English teacher, but I'm a humanist too.
-
Sorry someone posted an old Q3 from a chat and threw me off! I need an afternoon coffee!
-
A2: Also, resources like & local libraries offer fab ways to bring storytelling to classes. https://t.co/uNrudbBcHb
-
-
TED_ED: Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
-
-
true! and with the complicated health issues we are approaching we need nurses and ethicists more than ever
-
-
-
What a great transition. Also good for thinking of sown thing to being to the table when storytelling https://t.co/6WHnzAZejh
-
all sorts. Often dumb stuff that I have done turn into life lessons. OR I find a local story. They share as well.
-
lessons that are meaningful are the ones we remember the most :)
-
-
-
Q1: Storytelling is personal. Good listening gives value to the S's and encourages later participation https://t.co/I5lxqtkUXN
-
-
A3 actively teach and model the art of conversation. Dying art form.
-
Yes! Thanks for joining us Gary!
-
Teach Listening Skills as a unit to precede teaching Storytelling Skills.
-
Do we practice this enough in classrooms? If not, why?
-
A3: Have Ss listen for new ideas, new words, lesson vocabulary, etc. & form questions from there. https://t.co/4YAyaflHWG
-
Sounds great! What does that look like?
-
A3 Allow them to take turns to be the storyteller.
-
What approaches would you suggest for modeling this?
-
A3 engagement without boundaries. Allow for curiosity and shared stories. Ditch the script and see what resonates with students
-
use energy, passion , enthusiasm all the skills we use in teaching. Hook them in and take them on the journey
-
A3 Having students formulate & respond to questions about the story is a great way to boost critical thinking &engagement
-
My heart is warm having join the conversation on storytelling and listening!
-
teach kids how to ask questions and be critical thinkers. They tend towards the superficial, need to dig deep
-
Great idea. What ways can students be storytellers?
-
hmm not sure why. Love the Ontario curriculum which encourages oral skills as a separate concept https://t.co/tq2bYNCEzi
-
-
Do we practice this enough in classrooms? If not, why?
-
-
Hi Everyone, Christine here, 4th grade T from Venezuela. Chiming in to join - better late than never!
-
A3 Sharing stories allows all to reveal their humanity. Need to show the struggles along with successes https://t.co/gVDwseBXN6
-
this is down through modeling, hands on practice, and more practice. Not an inherent skill
-
easier said, definitely. How do we teach curiosity and inquisitiveness when school typically crushes this?
-
Yes! Yes! Yes! What are ways you hook students to hang on to every word?
-
Great to see you on Twitter, Connie! Looking forward to telling stories with you in person soon!
-
Most of my tching is converstion. Lots of how qns, why, what next? "Cripes, then what did you do??" AND lsten to THEM.
-
Most of my Ss have jobs so this can be the start
-
Such a good point! We have to subvert the system! :)
-
A3 Ss get hooked when they can empathize. When we require questions of them, do we kill engagement?
-
: in ethics classes: lay out a scenario ask students to collectively build the ideal story then reveal the actual story
-
A2 by connecting Ts and Ss, making Storytelling and collaboration even more meaningful
-
Sneaky teaching. "Oh I really shouldn't tell this story it's: off topic, ratedR..." Ss "tell it! Tell it https://t.co/CQLBxcgR6V
-
-
Yes! Yes! Yes! What are ways you hook students to hang on to every word?
-
A3: I have my Ss share their partners' answers instead of their own for every pair share. Ensures listening each time.
-
Hi! We are glad you are here! Did you see chimed in too?
-
A3: Ask Ss questions throughout the story, or have them create dialogue as you go.
-
A3 such great practice to consider follow-up questions. A skill that's lacking: continuing the conversations.
-
A3 cont'd: it will help them see how ethics plays out in the real world and highlight the need for it simultaneously.
-
A3: I also have them role play bad listening habits on purpose and debrief the process. Develops listening meta-cognition
-
Q3 I like to have lots of convo's on how to give great feedback: models, sentence prompts, exemplars https://t.co/pgzrouJowC
-
YES. We do that as well. It takes practice, but the students catch on quickly once it's an established routine.
-
A3 Also provide Ss with opportunities to have experiences that they can use in their storytelling.
-
Yes! The importance of different view points. How do you use struggles to get Ss to feel empowered & not fearful?
-
Great follow up idea! Thanks!
-
-
-
I agree but sometime students are so worried about asking a question they don't fully engage with the narrative
-
Great question! I know my answer. What are your thoughts? https://t.co/AKvbmiSbFK
-
-
A3 Ss get hooked when they can empathize. When we require questions of them, do we kill engagement?
-
This is epic! Love this idea! https://t.co/mSd06WfOOt
-
-
: in ethics classes: lay out a scenario ask students to collectively build the ideal story then reveal the actual story
-
How do we get educators to practice not killing the conversation by asking follow up questions?
-
-
-
-
-
A2 actively engage schools / colleges sometimes just ask your local museum
-
Yes! Austin's Butterfly is a wonderful example of the importance of feedback.
-
Has to balance. If time allows just listen 1st time; formulate questions 2nd & 3rd time a story is heard.
-
We have intentionally tried to argue the point of view of characters we despise in books/movies/politics. Always fun.
-
A3 breathing exercises, 5min stretching, and not rushing through lessons would be the 1st steps, also voicing positive thoughts
-
What are some examples of these experiences you would provide for students?
-
-
initial relation of a story to personal connections helps drive discussion forward. Then move on
-
I do this with Hamlet. God he's annoying!
-
A4 Get Ss involved in Clubs and have them give TEDlike Talks, right ?
-
Sounds awesome! Can you share some examples of these "despicable" characters?
-
-
-
A4 By sharing idea-provoking stories & ideas that will cause students to think, care & engage in discussion w/ each other
-
-
Sorry everyone gotta run check in later to see all the great ideas! Thank you!! 😍
-
A4:...Divergent, Maze Runner, The Wiz, Live!... All stories Ss know & enjoy in order to introduce lesson concepts.
-
Haha, Pip! Do your students feel the same way about Hamlet?
-
Thank you everyone at have to sign off!
-
Thanks for participating in tonight's
-
This is awesome and so memorable! How do you get Ss to share their stories from these experiences?
-
Thanks for participating in tonight's
-
this must be very entertainig for Ss (I just thought of 3 I'd like to discuss) I'd like to hear more about this :)
-
A4 engage Ss to tell their stories
-
-
Jeff in Firegirl.
Hillary from Stargirl.
Donald Trump from New York.
Junior high Ss are critical. https://t.co/ClpyIaj7xR
-
-
Sounds awesome! Can you share some examples of these "despicable" characters?
-
They do by the end! I'm VERY convincing. It's more that I'm the queen of devil's advocate.
-
-
A4 TEDEd IS collaborative storytelling and active listening. I love that about these chats.
-
They have to evaluate their performance formally but I provide opportunities for informal discussions 1/2
-
-
This looks awesome! Thanks for sharing!
-
Why aren't there Twitter chats for students? Engage them on social media beyond their small world? https://t.co/QKS8aybKp0
-
-
A4 TEDEd IS collaborative storytelling and active listening. I love that about these chats.
-
-
Through promotion of how these can benefit students and their learning?
-
-
A3 1 of my Ss from 25 years ago still remembers his & has taken his wife & family on them
-
teacher sets the tone in the classroom, kids can be taught to think. It takes a lot of modeling and practice
-
They definitely can be! Have you had students engage in Twitter Chats? What about from class to class globally?
-
Good point! I got a few of mine to join last time, but it's finals these days... No time
-
Awesome Those Mac-Casts look great. High levels of Ss engagement.
-
as teachers we have to challenge the system and challenge kids. Not all paragraphs have 8 sentences. 1/2
-
I'm captivated by the photography already. I will need to dig deeper.
-
don't just write to the task, tell me what you think and why. Hardest thing I ever had to teach 2/2
-
Include students voices by asking them questions. Giving students the opportunity to participate with the story teller.
-
TED_ED: Wrapping up Q3, on to Q4
-
-
yep, learning is not about teaching, it is the direct result of personal relationships
-
Great idea! Pro products give higher meaning, esp shared globally-Ss love podcasts.
-
Difficult at 1st when Ss are used to being told what to write in some classes. https://t.co/W8HtgF2PSi
-
-
don't just write to the task, tell me what you think and why. Hardest thing I ever had to teach 2/2
