I'm Heather Singmaster, and I work at the Center for Global Education, Asia Society - the sponsor of #globaledchat! I went to Minnesota, Yosemite, and Boston over the summer.
Hey #Globaledchat! I’m working on kid tuck ins so may be in and out. Excited to join in for the first time! I’m JoyAnn - teacher librarian from Indiana. I spent most of my summer in central Indiana going to parks and such with my little people.
A1. V r witnessing climate change throughout d world, it's a global problem that requires collaborative effort beyond geographical boundries through ClimateAction by #TeachSDGs 4 #GlobalGoals#globaledchat
A1: Climate change affects all areas of life - we should look at it from all perspectives. And it's a critical topic, so we should engage students in thinking about it in multiple ways. #globaledchat
A1: Climate change impacts our lives in multiple ways. It is important that students approach it from different sides so they fully understand it. #Globaledchat
#globaledchat
A1: Climate change is the SDG hub. We need to teach that SDGs are interconnected....Justice, food, water, conflict all linked to CC. Interdisciplinary #PBL and #TeachSDGs is the key.
A1: From the perspective of a student and future elementary educator, I would say that it's important to make children aware from an early age the issue of climate change. They may not understand the whole concept, but they can grasp the idea of the impact it has. #globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat A1. Climate change is something we witness and experience on literally a daily basis & it has an impact on our future...so it makes sense to look at it not just as a school taught subject, but as a matter of concern ...a global issue.
A1 - For me, it starts with basic awareness. Students often have some issues with lack of knowledge and misinformation from different sources, therefore students need to be aware of facts first and build from them to create real change. #globaledchat
A1 Climate change affects all aspects of our lives from work to leisure. As a global education school we address drom the global competencies as well. #GlobalEdChat
A2. Art speaks to all ages. Like pictures, artistic expression speaks louder than words & it transcends manmade barriers of countries & language #globaledchat#TeachSDGs#GlobalGoals
A1 - I love using the arts to help students visualize and engage with facts and ideas about a complex subjects. It helps students understand the complex issues, express them, and engage with climate change. Excited to work through this with my students next month. #globaledchat
A2: MANY art forms can be used when teaching a difficult topic. Songs and skits are excellent ways to engage the students and leave them with a better understanding of the concept #globaledchat
A2: The arts provide a creative way to critically view climate change and its consequences. The arts trigger a different type of thinking that helps them engage with the topic on a visual and physical level. #globaledchat
A2: Arts allow Ss to think beyond today and imagine the future. No correct/incorrect. Ss should be the ones imagining it b/c they’ll be living it. #globaledchat
#globaledchat
At FPR, we used artists/musicians in our OneYuanConcerts to share how Art Can Change the World. https://t.co/cx3HUBfeZV Regarding climate change, integrate artists in residence or from a distance that can share how art can be a vehicle 4 impact. Kids go from there.
A3. Artistic interpretation is often subjective & I feel Climate change is rather objective in terms of cause-effect relationship, so younger ss might struggle #globaledchat#TeachSDGs#GlobalGoals
#Globaledchat A3. Creative expression is open to interpretation and may be abstract ...that can be misleading , secondly without hard core statistics and data ...the message maynot be so hard hitting for some
A3 - For me, it is limited by my creativity. I want to do impressive and engaging lessons with my students, but it takes creativity that I have had a hard time getting deep into. However, Twitter has been a great boon to finding and building great lesson plans. #globaledchat
Challenges: some people don’t recognize this as a real issue that effects us all. Could be seen as controversial. A reason to do it for sure but can be challenging depending on where you live. #globaledchat
A3: As a high school ELA teacher, I feel like we tend to compartmentalize and not view climate change as something to be explored beyond the science classroom #globaledchat
A3: While art is a good way to teach and bring creativeness into the classroom, it can become to broad with a topic like climate change and the students could become unfocused on the purpose of their activities #globaledchat
Q4: The arts span a wide number of subjects, so let's focus in on a few in the next two questions. In what ways can educators use poetry and music to teach climate change? #globaledchat
A3: The challenge is fitting the complexity of the issue with the complexity of the art form. We want the students to think on a deeper level, not a surface level. The task should mirror the thought process we are asking them to engage in. #globaledchat
I agree. To some, it's still a debate. When my kids try to debate, I tell them that the only thing left to debate about is how we move past fossil fuels and save the planet and ourselves #globaledchat
A4. Having ss (esp teenagers) express themselves through Haiku poems or songwriting wd b successful. I hv tried both & the results often leave u stumped with ss creativity #globaledchat#TeachSDGs#GlobalGoals
Hi #globaledchat- sorry I'm late! I'm near Washington, DC and work at the Department of State in content development and exchange programs for English language learners and teachers.
A4 - I teach a unit on protest music and the importance of standing up for what we believe in. Part of this is writing a protest poem about a subject of our choice. This year it will focus on the UNSDGs and I hope some of the students will engage climate change. #globaledchat
#globaledchat Hi All! Jumping in late to learn and share with like-minded folks re: #climatechange and #ArtsEd as an entry point to learning and beyond.
A3: #globaledchat
Team, Use the SDG target cards (the 169) to connect S art in ways that become vocational. Example: Beijing. Kid <3 photography. Delves deep into photojournalism and CC. Hosts a photo event around CC photos in Beijing. Sells prints to support @WaterforSoSudan
"Mister!" he said with a sawdusty sneeze, "I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees."
Use whatever means of expression engages at particular ages.
#GlobalEdChat A4
Q4: The arts span a wide number of subjects, so let's focus in on a few in the next two questions. In what ways can educators use poetry and music to teach climate change? #globaledchat
A4: Students can create poetry and music to share what is happening and perform it for larger public audiences to raise awareness or money for a specific cause. #globaledchat
#Globaledchat A4. In our school we have taken up #SDGs for different classes.Students investigate and research on the global issues, look at what's being done about them, identify loopholes and then suggest, draft action plans..all this they do using art/ drama/ music/ Design etc
Exactly. They are already choosing which SDG to use as the basis for their 20% Time project this year and I want to extend that choice to many of the other activities we use. #Globaledchat
A5. Having ss capture climate change in their immediate surroundings through photographs which tell a story/weaving stories around photographs/captioning them work well #globaledchat#TeachSDGs#GlobalGoals
One of my all-time favorites too... a beautiful, lyrical book. Dr. Seuss at his apex. Manages to be moving without preaching. Brilliant strategy for the main perpetrator to be the narrator. #GlobalEdChat#TheLorax#ReadABookDay
A5: Showing students timelapsed pictures of different areas in the world where climate change has impacted the environment could be a very powerful tool (a picture says 1000 words) #globaledchat
A5 - Simply a picture can help student understand quickly and easily complex issues. I am excited to employ Google Poly and Tour Creator to help students understand the complexities of place and climate. #globaledchat
I used to teach ESOL science in HS, and often used art projects as the main assignments instead of tests or essays. The students seemed to learn more by drawing and visually learning the vocabulary. #globaledchat
A5.visual arts are the perfect "in" for promoting discussion & critical-thinking. I use VTS "what's happening here? what makes you say that? what more can we find?" Recently used NASA imagery of Earth also. So many rich resources which can promote deeper thought. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A4) Yes- having Ss rewrite lyrics to Imagine by John Lennon, followed by their creation of a new story within the song symbolizing JL's quest to improve the world from point of view of endangered owl. Result: Stop motion animation featured in local art museum.
A5. Having ss capture climate change in their immediate surroundings through photographs which tell a story/weaving stories around photographs/captioning them work well #globaledchat#TeachSDGs#GlobalGoals
A5: visuals/testimonies of drastic changes on Earth. To visually see huge changes on a large scale and hear its affect in locations around the world is difficult to deny. #globaledchat
A5: @goproject's visual essay “Melting Away” pairs Camille Seaman’s documentation of icebergs with a lesson plan that gets deep into the mind of a photographer and connection between climate change, bearing witness, and social responsibility https://t.co/yUUM1pDPlZ#globaledchat
A5: Climate change effects everything. Have students take a picture of their neighborhood and then describe what the effects of climate change are. What will happen if nothing changes? What could their neighborhood change? Ask critical questions on a personal level. #globaledchat
A5: Keep your eyes open for local (and virtual) art exhibitions that feature climate change. The NYC @ClimateSignals exhibition: “Ten solar-powered highway signs flashing text that draws passers-by into the climate conversation.” @ClimateMuseum#globaledchat#StepUp2018
A6. A picture is worth a 1000 words & art with its inherent advantages of being a universal language transcending geography, age & education can play a key role in spreading awareness on climatechange #globaledchat#TeachSDGs#GlobalGoals
A6: Students can advocate for change using the arts. Some people aren't swayed by scientific facts these days, but they may be swayed by visual images (maybe?). #globaledchat
A6: I like the old fashioned gallery walks of student art on public display in public venues. Everyone enjoys looking at student art, and will stop and consider it, no matter their idealogy. #Globaledchat
A6: I'm excited to make climate change a poetry writing theme this year. I think kids do feel despair about climate change, and self-expression is always important #globaledchat
A6: Last year I had students who recorded a song called “The Water Song” by local artists @WendyandDB to raise money and awareness about the importance of clean water in Ghana. #globaledchathttps://t.co/m3ffhKNt7Z
A2: My office runs a #MOOC on STEM for English Language learners focusing on climate change; is self-paced and opens every 2 weeks: https://t.co/BYVehc7SK0 Lots of downloadable resources if you register by auditing. #globaledchat
A6 - One of my favorites recently was seeing sculptures made completely out of recycled materials. It shows the terrifying nature of what we throw away and how it can be repurposed to be something beautiful. It bridged climate change and art in awesome ways. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A6) Advocacy is the goal for our Ss, right? Art, especially piblic art, has the power to stir the masses like J.G. Posada, Fairey, Guthrie, Seeger, Angelou, Neruda-- now we have Hip Hop. Don't forget drama and comedy!
A6: Art is another way to engage people. A photo essay, a poetry slam, an art exhibit... a song, a fundraising concert, or even a mural can effectively bring people together around a cause. #globaledchat

A4. I love a good slam poem in general. A two person dialogue poem with a before/after, nature/human, etc. A mirror poem you read forwards about how things were and backwards about how they are now. #globaledchat

I agree pictures say a thousand words, Its amazing the reaction from students when they can see things with their own eyes. It makes it reality #globaledchat
We're building a entire student-led Global Goals Media Network at Seoul Foreign school and are looking for schools and classrooms as member stations. Let's talk!
#GlobalEdChat
A7 - Right now I am working towards using the SDGs as a baseline and adding as I go forward. I would be happy to learn about any resources. #globaledchat
Q7: A few years ago my office published this book on art and language learning- there are a lot of activities that could be adapted for #STEM lesson plans, especially in low-resource environments: https://t.co/ULrjah6mOp#globaledchat
I agree. To some, it's still a debate. When my kids try to debate, I tell them that the only thing left to debate about is how we move past fossil fuels and save the planet and ourselves #globaledchat
That is so great to hear. It has really helped me reframe my focus in my classroom around a subject is flexible and choice oriented but relevant to everyone. #Globaledchat
A7: I learned from the poet Gary Fincke to take a fact or series of facts from the news and build a poem around it. This would work wonderfully with climate change. It would weave the personal with the scientific. #Globaledchat
#globaledchat A7) Once Ss are fluent in metaphor, the only resource you need is current research and their interests/curiosity for expression + your space and support.
Please help me thank @TaraNuth for being a fantastic moderator today! If you are interested in leading a future #Globaledchat, send me a message at: hsingmaster@asiasociety.org - I'm scheduling for the fall now!
