  • hsingmaster - Moderator Sep 6 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A1: Climate change affects all areas of life - we should look at it from all perspectives. And it's a critical topic, so we should engage students in thinking about it in multiple ways. #globaledchat

  • brookemichele9 Sep 6 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: From the perspective of a student and future elementary educator, I would say that it's important to make children aware from an early age the issue of climate change. They may not understand the whole concept, but they can grasp the idea of the impact it has. #globaledchat
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:12 PM EDT
    Way to multi-task, Joe! #globaledchat
    In reply to @edtechjoe
  • ApraRalli Sep 6 @ 8:12 PM EDT
#GlobalEdChat A1. Climate change is something we witness and experience on literally a daily basis & it has an impact on our future...so it makes sense to look at it not just as a school taught subject, but as a matter of concern ...a global issue.
  • TeacherWinters Sep 6 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1 - For me, it starts with basic awareness. Students often have some issues with lack of knowledge and misinformation from different sources, therefore students need to be aware of facts first and build from them to create real change. #globaledchat
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:13 PM EDT
Q2: How can the arts be engaging entry points for students to understand the causes and consequences of climate change? #globaledchat
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:13 PM EDT
Absolutely. We cannot have scientific solutions without political and social will #globaledchat
    In reply to @J17rb
  • edtechjoe Sep 6 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1 Climate change affects all aspects of our lives from work to leisure. As a global education school we address drom the global competencies as well. #GlobalEdChat
  • hsingmaster - Moderator Sep 6 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A2: Visuals of the damage being done to the earth can make it real for students - it makes it more than an abstract concept. #globaledchat
  • dpskamal Sep 6 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A2. Art speaks to all ages. Like pictures, artistic expression speaks louder than words & it transcends manmade barriers of countries & language #globaledchat #TeachSDGs #GlobalGoals
  • TeacherWinters Sep 6 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A1 - I love using the arts to help students visualize and engage with facts and ideas about a complex subjects. It helps students understand the complex issues, express them, and engage with climate change. Excited to work through this with my students next month. #globaledchat
  • brookemichele9 Sep 6 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2: MANY art forms can be used when teaching a difficult topic. Songs and skits are excellent ways to engage the students and leave them with a better understanding of the concept #globaledchat
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:17 PM EDT
True! Artistic expression draws us in, makes us pay attention, and transcends cultural/language barriers #globaledchat
    In reply to @dpskamal
  • noel_hoffmann Sep 6 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2: The arts provide a creative way to critically view climate change and its consequences. The arts trigger a different type of thinking that helps them engage with the topic on a visual and physical level. #globaledchat
  • MsSmithSTEM Sep 6 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: Arts allow Ss to think beyond today and imagine the future. No correct/incorrect. Ss should be the ones imagining it b/c they’ll be living it. #globaledchat
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:18 PM EDT
I agree. It captures their attention and helps them engage with complexity #globaledchat
    In reply to @TeacherWinters
  • ApraRalli Sep 6 @ 8:19 PM EDT

  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Q3: What are some challenges to teaching climate change through the arts? #globaledchat
  • JeremyDBond Sep 6 @ 8:21 PM EDT
What an interesting topic today on #GlobalEdChat! Hi from Connecticut. #EnviroEd #ArtsEd
  • inspirecitizen1 Sep 6 @ 8:21 PM EDT
#globaledchat At FPR, we used artists/musicians in our OneYuanConcerts to share how Art Can Change the World. https://t.co/cx3HUBfeZV Regarding climate change, integrate artists in residence or from a distance that can share how art can be a vehicle 4 impact. Kids go from there.
  • dpskamal Sep 6 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A3. Artistic interpretation is often subjective & I feel Climate change is rather objective in terms of cause-effect relationship, so younger ss might struggle #globaledchat #TeachSDGs #GlobalGoals
  • hsingmaster - Moderator Sep 6 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A3: Sometimes images can be too powerful and difficult to view - @nzeichner shared ways to discuss complex topics, especially those about the environment, in this blog: https://t.co/uJLv45m7sI #globaledchat #globaled
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:22 PM EDT

  • ACTforEducation Sep 6 @ 8:22 PM EDT
Sorry I’m late! Interesting topic tonight. Jen from Chicago, SEL Manager. #globaledchat
  • ApraRalli Sep 6 @ 8:22 PM EDT
#Globaledchat A3. Creative expression is open to interpretation and may be abstract ...that can be misleading , secondly without hard core statistics and data ...the message maynot be so hard hitting for some
  • TeacherWinters Sep 6 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3 - For me, it is limited by my creativity. I want to do impressive and engaging lessons with my students, but it takes creativity that I have had a hard time getting deep into. However, Twitter has been a great boon to finding and building great lesson plans. #globaledchat
  • MsSmithSTEM Sep 6 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3: Many different facets to climate change. How do we engage without overwhelming? Best mediums to express these different parts? #globaledchat
  • JeremyDBond Sep 6 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Because unless we save the planet, we won't have an earth to study or learn about ANYTHING. #GlobalEdChat A1
    • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:06 PM EDT
Q1: Why is climate change important to teach beyond the boundaries of the science classroom? #globaledchat
  • ACTforEducation Sep 6 @ 8:24 PM EDT
Challenges: some people don’t recognize this as a real issue that effects us all. Could be seen as controversial. A reason to do it for sure but can be challenging depending on where you live. #globaledchat
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: As a high school ELA teacher, I feel like we tend to compartmentalize and not view climate change as something to be explored beyond the science classroom #globaledchat
  • brookemichele9 Sep 6 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: While art is a good way to teach and bring creativeness into the classroom, it can become to broad with a topic like climate change and the students could become unfocused on the purpose of their activities #globaledchat
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:26 PM EDT
So true. How do we help point kids to solutions instead of despair? #globaledchat
    In reply to @MsSmithSTEM
  • vw_hk Sep 6 @ 8:26 PM EDT
Hi everyone. Vicki, Visual Art-ing in Hanoi, hovering around #globaledchat whilst getting set for the school day. What a great topic today!
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Q4: The arts span a wide number of subjects, so let's focus in on a few in the next two questions. In what ways can educators use poetry and music to teach climate change? #globaledchat
  • noel_hoffmann Sep 6 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: The challenge is fitting the complexity of the issue with the complexity of the art form. We want the students to think on a deeper level, not a surface level. The task should mirror the thought process we are asking them to engage in. #globaledchat
  • hsingmaster - Moderator Sep 6 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Welcome to the chat Vicki and good morning! Feel free to jump in! #globaledchat
    In reply to @vw_hk
  • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:28 PM EDT
I agree. To some, it's still a debate. When my kids try to debate, I tell them that the only thing left to debate about is how we move past fossil fuels and save the planet and ourselves #globaledchat
    In reply to @ACTforEducation
  • noel_hoffmann Sep 6 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A4: With poetry, we can address the social and emotional impact of climate change. #Globaledchat
  • hsingmaster - Moderator Sep 6 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A4: Writing poetry and music can help bring out students' personal connections to the issue. #globaledchat
  • dpskamal Sep 6 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A4. Having ss (esp teenagers) express themselves through Haiku poems or songwriting wd b successful. I hv tried both & the results often leave u stumped with ss creativity #globaledchat #TeachSDGs #GlobalGoals

One of my all-time favorites too... a beautiful, lyrical book. Dr. Seuss at his apex. Manages to be moving without preaching. Brilliant strategy for the main perpetrator to be the narrator. #GlobalEdChat #TheLorax #ReadABookDay

  • jacquiegardy Sep 6 @ 8:38 PM EDT
I used to teach ESOL science in HS, and often used art projects as the main assignments instead of tests or essays. The students seemed to learn more by drawing and visually learning the vocabulary. #globaledchat

  • ACTforEducation Sep 6 @ 8:39 PM EDT

A6 - One of my favorites recently was seeing sculptures made completely out of recycled materials. It shows the terrifying nature of what we throw away and how it can be repurposed to be something beautiful. It bridged climate change and art in awesome ways. #globaledchat

#globaledchat A6) Advocacy is the goal for our Ss, right? Art, especially piblic art, has the power to stir the masses like J.G. Posada, Fairey, Guthrie, Seeger, Angelou, Neruda-- now we have Hip Hop. Don't forget drama and comedy!

A6: Art is another way to engage people. A photo essay, a poetry slam, an art exhibit... a song, a fundraising concert, or even a mural can effectively bring people together around a cause. #globaledchat

Do you have a link by chance? I love this idea. Kids can to find recycled materials and make their own as well. #globaledchat

A4. I love a good slam poem in general. A two person dialogue poem with a before/after, nature/human, etc. A mirror poem you read forwards about how things were and backwards about how they are now. #globaledchat

A4 - I teach a unit on protest music and the importance of standing up for what we believe in. Part of this is writing a protest poem about a subject of our choice. This year it will focus on the UNSDGs and I hope some of the students will engage climate change. #globaledchat

Excellent. Want to debate #ClimateChange? Debate how you'll guarantee the future of the planet. #GlobalEdChat
    • TaraNuth Sep 6 @ 8:28 PM EDT
I agree. To some, it's still a debate. When my kids try to debate, I tell them that the only thing left to debate about is how we move past fossil fuels and save the planet and ourselves #globaledchat

A7: I learned from the poet Gary Fincke to take a fact or series of facts from the news and build a poem around it. This would work wonderfully with climate change. It would weave the personal with the scientific. #Globaledchat

#globaledchat A7) Once Ss are fluent in metaphor, the only resource you need is current research and their interests/curiosity for expression + your space and support.
