#TOSAChat is a chat on Twitter every Monday night at 8pm PST for TOSAs (teachers on special assignment), including all edtech and instructional coaches.
Hey, hey, #tosachat! It's Jody in La Habra! I love word games and trivia games. Taboo is one of my all-time favorites! I'm a point-and-shout type of player (I'm sure you'd never have guessed that!)
Good evening, #TOSAchat. Joe, Math & STEAM Coach. Fav games as a kid: handball, kickball, baseball, Techmobowl, Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter II, ...

Hey #tosachat Nicole here. Equity TOSA in Campbell, CA I DOMINATED the Super Nintendo in my early & mid-90s childhood. Donkey Kong, Mario 3, Mario Kart, etc.
Christine Dixon, Innovation Coordinator TOSA for @DoublePeak_K8 in San Marcos! My favorite game was Super Mario Bros so when I teach Ss #MakeyMakey & they get to play #Scratch Super Mario Bros we're ALL happy :) #tosachat
A1: Favorite types of play include "playing outside," just being super silly, word games, and trivia games. I also like puzzley games like escape rooms/ @breakoutedu and the like! #tosachat
My favorite kind of play is really just being silly, especially when I embrace potty humor with my 6-year-old son. I also love adult humor & games like Cards Against Humanity #tosachat
Hi #TOSAchat friends!!! Sorry to miss the chat tonight but too much work & prepping to do tonight before Palm Springs! Look forward to seeing many of you soon!!

Come to Primrose B, 3/15 3:30-4:30 and well show you our wins & fails in building #AlisalStrong with fun and human connections. @EdTechSpec@NewImpulse#tosachat
There was this one time, at a conference somewhere in south county, with @annkozma723@teachusingtech & @hollybsteele, where we learned how to use @PlayOsmo by using the Masterpiece app. It was the most hilarious thing EVER. Drawing a robot was a near impossible task! #tosachat
A2 we have a computation thinking cohort where we are T learners getting to tinker with Ozobots, MakeyMakey, and microbit, most engaging PD ever #tosachat
We did a scavenger hunt downtown as our staff retreat activity at the start of this year and it was a TOTAL blast. Great community builder too. #tosachat
A2. Everyday I was in the classroom. When I was having fun, I know the kids were usually having fun too...Usually. Amazing learning happens when kids don't realize they are learning. #tosachat
A2: We have done a photo scavenger hunt around campus for grade levels to get to know each other. We are getting a bunch of new robotics stuff and I am going to have a playground for the staff to come after school one day and just play. #TOSAChat
And then when I shared the first game I wrote, I was immediately schooled at how much of an amateur I was. TV themed game. Adding @EdTechAri to this. She was at that #tikitosa meet up. #tosachat

That's my goal for next year's staff day. Our staff & campus are growing a LOT next year, I think it's an awesome idea & gets everyone mixing & mingling. I might pick your brain for tips. #tosachat

A3: Can’t have too much play. Our minds and brain cells fire like mad when we have fun playing. Let’s make the learning engaging, fun, meaningful, & lasting through gameplay. #tosachat

A3: I love incorporating some aspect of play into my lessons, we make Mini Golf courses for physics and Boats for buoyancy/gravity and they create their own @breakoutEDU or @GetKahoot as reviews #tosachat
A3: Depends on your audience and subject. I think play is a great way to make learning stick. Insert fun when and where you can if applicable #tosachat
A3: I don’t believe that there is such a thing as too much play as long as the play is intentional and purposeful. That being said sometimes the purpose of play is just to have fun. #TOSAChat
A3: I think there needs to be a balance. Play is very important for adults and children. Play is good as long as it isn't distracting from what needs to be taught. #TOSAchat

I think maintaining that balance can be hard. I always said that we can have fun while learning, but in school we need to put our learning first! #tosachat

A3 I really do not think there is too much. "...committed to bringing the unrealized knowledge, practices and benefits of play into public life." Institute of Play. Lower affective filters when playing #havefun#play#tosachat
I think play is seriously underutilized, especially in adult learning. Adults take themselves way too seriously. Time to break the stigma that play does not equal learning. #tosachat
I like to incorporate play time in all my PD, sometimes its directed, other times it's cutting the teachers loose to explore and learn on their own. Really depends on the audience though. #tosachat

Play is a component of ALL my professional development! We play games as icebreakers, I try to throw games in throughout as review, and there is ALWAYS a hands-on digital playtime to learn tools if necessary. #tosachat

A3: A huge focus on play in our Innov Program is when students are initially exploring the app, website, robot, coding platform, etc. They need to learn the tool before applying to a subject area or objective...if they play first they are so much more successful! #tosachat
we are all pro-mutant, but it was determined that a combination of Jean Grey's telekinesis/telepathy and Mystique's shapeshifting/longevity would be the ultimate mutations #tosachat
AMEN!!! Sometimes people take themselves way too seriously. That was one way I quickly bonded with my students. It made me approachable and human. #tosachat
A3: o try to incorporate relay games all the time in HS math. Each S has to do a step. Ss get so into it I apologize to teachers around me before we even do the activity. #TOSAchat
Not quantity but content? If I played for a whole school year I’m not sure I’d know how to solve a math equation. I probably would read more than the sports, make magazine... I guess that’s the leaders role? #tosachat
I think it's because as adults we've become conditioned to not "waste time", or that we have so many things to do we have to be efficient. Yet every adult has fun once play is added back in. #tosachat
I think this is a vulnerability thing. Some people are so afraid to be vulnerable and just jump in to things. I just say to myself "look at all the fun I'm having while that person is struggling with their appearance and grumpiness." #tosachat
#tosachat good question - with digital photography, it was all the possibilities you could make materialize and then observe and then try again with no consequences.
Yes! Play is a HUGE connector! It lowers filters and makes insta-friends. That's why kids are hard wired to initiate play with other kids they don't know, it's how they form a connection! #tosachat
I never try and force it. I have found though that when the rest of the group is having a good time, these teachers tend to come around. I also realize that I can't please everybody all the time. #tosachat
A4: This year we embarked on #personalizedpd so it's a game based approach of professional development a bit but definitely more we can do to make it game based (badging, leveling up, etc) #tosachat
A3) Pam here, just got home & jumpin’ in. Best thing about the word “Play” is that it lowers the stress level, when you play it seems less likely that you might blow something up...unless of course that’s how you play? 🧐#tosachat
Me too. Life's too short to miss out on fun because you're stuck in your own misery. Embrace the other "lone nuts" willing to let loose and enjoy the fun with you! #tosachat
A4: I try to instill the attitude that pushing the buttons and creating awesome stuff can be fun. I like group activities where people can be successful together. A little competition helps. and throw in a @GetKahoot or @quizizz for good measure #tosachat
Same here, I am ALL about the built-in sandbox time during PD. Brain breaks too. I have 90s R&B music videos spread throughout my #HyperDocs session at #CUE18#tosachat
A4 @weskriesel and I presented at a conference (@RTM_BG ) a week ago in Los Angeles and we started our presentation with a game and connected the game to our talk about systems and personalized learning #tosachat

A4 I start my PDs with a hands on learning. Today we started with silly putty exploration to practice science discourse and using a sticky note peer feedback protocol. They wanted to keep the silly putty 😁 #tosachat

A4. I think there is a fine line between having fun and treating the adult learners like children. Treating me like a child will lose me pretty quick. #tosachat

It only goes wrong if the people in the PD don't recognize the songs because they're too young! LOL. But 80s is pretty much classic now, so... #tosachat
A5) I was teaching a class on using the camera app for reflection (pre-Flipgrid) and had a playlist with only songs about pictures/cameras, lots out there! Also songs with stuttering in them (M, M, My Sharona... B,B,B, Benny & the Jets...it was fun #tosachat
A5: the 60s 70s 80s pandora station is epic. It’s also fun to find songs that go along with what they are doing. Like Freezeframe for working with images. #TOSAChat
It depends on what type of activity we are doing in class- have lots of fun upbeat but my all time fave for when encouraging Ss to think on their own (before collaborating) esp #designthinking is Lindsey Stirling #tosachat
I usually stream, as well. If I spent time uploading all my CDs, I could have a killer playlist!! Just don't want to spend the time doing that or spend the $ to purchase the songs again! #tosachat
I love Spotify. I have a playlist for pretty much everything, and am always checking out & following their created ones. I used to be a devout Pandora user, but I love the versatility Spotify offers. #tosachat
So does my 7th grade son and it makes me so happy!!! But I also love, love, love folk songs and 60s/70s music and classic rock, so next I have to get him turned on to that (my musical taste is eclectic!) #tosachat

A6 If it's not happening, keep it simple! Run Thumb War Tournaments, Play Count 'Em Up, Create a Kahoot/Quizizz. Discuss strategies & provide students discussion time which equates to value added for the whole class. #tosachat#havefun#play#learn#Education#students#teachers
It's not music, but I would play "Death by Powerpoint" and "Stupid in School" for my students. They were fun and led to some great discussions. #tosachat
A6 I’m known to pull jokes on my coworkers, sending cat videos or hiding clown pics in cupboards...it comes back to me a lot too. This is my office that got pranked #tosachat
