The industrial model where compliance was the main objective is outdated. The information age requires thinkers, problem solvers, creative minds, innovators.
#edchat
An interesting topic for discussion tonight. I think I will let a few tweets load up before entering into the conversation. I teach in a school that is identified as "rural" that is geographically only about ten miles from two larger river cites. #edchat
Based on the time spent on review at the beginning of the year, I'd have to say no, the industrial model of education in an agricultural calendar does not work these days #edchat
NOW underway #edchat Topic: Is the industrial model of education wrapped in an agricultural calendar working as the best model for 21st Century education?
I don't think that the calendar needs to change; I think kids like it how it is. but the industrial model is no longer effective and needs to change in order to help kids actually succeed. #edchat

I agree with this. Also, being from Wyoming I would much rather have a long break while the weather is nice than small breaks when the weather is not as nice #edchat
Not to muddy the question tonight by adding further inquiry, but does a travel and tourism interest create a sort of tense braid between agri and industrial? It is a consideration in some areas that depend upon them both for economy. #edchat
Do you have colleagues who feel pressure to get Ss back to where they "were at the end of last year"? As ESOL T, many Ts complain to me @ my Ss "slide" each summer. #Edchat
Industrial model? Agricultural calendar? The KEY QUESTION FOR THE EDUCATION SYSTEM is how well does it work for all students and teachers... So, how well is is working for you? Students? #edchat
I think some locations would benefit from more tourism at different times of the year... if students staggered their vacations. But is that important enough to change the calendar? #edchat
No. I wouldn't think so. But, and I am just throwing out an idea here, could a student make application for a possible blended learning that would eventually become integration. With a portfolio? Proven academic record of performance? #edchat.
Right on... @MsKromm vacation matters! So what about the rest of the year? How well does the educational system work for students? Teachers? #edchat@ERobbPrincipal@LRobbTeacher
In reply to
@MsKromm, @MsKromm, @ERobbPrincipal, @LRobbTeacher
I believe that that it is beneficial in the 21st century because of seasonal reasons. It is a great time of the year for students to be outside taking a break from being inside all the time. #edchat
I agree with this the teachers and students both deserve breaks and there is still lots of learning that children can do throughout the summer. #edchat
I completely agree. Summer is an important time not only for rest for students and teachers, it is a time to refresh ideas for the upcoming school year. #edchat

*Climbs up on soapbox* The "industrial model" and agricultural calendar schedule are myths that for some reason, educators perpetuate as if they're true. Check your sources, friends! *climbs down* #edchat
Industrial model? Agricultural calendar? The KEY QUESTION FOR THE EDUCATION SYSTEM is how well does it work for all students and teachers... So, how well is is working for you? Students? #edchat
The system and calendar that our education system has used for centuries has gotten too comfortable to change even if it is detrimental to learning. #Edchat
I'm thinking that the conflict may not be between the two but really a braid that might include a thread of tourism. Or a thread of. . ."seasonalism" (let's coin this word, maybe). Or a thread of opportunities not there at another time. #edchat
If we change the calendar to year round with breaks, it needs to happen throughout the country. Otherwise summer camps, vacations, classes for teachers become impossible to take advantage of. #edchat
So @Rfpeterson80@PaulWHankins@mrskromm@karleydb is the key issue in education summer vacation, or the efficacy of the prevailing education model in educating all students to high levels of learnimg during the rest of the year? #edchat@tomwhitby
If the stuff of the beginning of the year is introduction and assessing where students are, could some of this happen within and upon a virtual platform? We have ability to do face-to-face even if we are not in the same room. Good for student? For the room? #edchat
Hi! I'm Madeline and I am a pre-service teacher from Grove City College. I enjoy the fact that students and teachers get a break from school during the summer months. I think that it is needed. #edchat
Possibly, but there could also be slow changes made in order to progress to where it needs to be; it doesn't all have to happen at once if it's something that NEEDS to happen #edchat

Whew. Let me incubate on this for a minute. But, if I were to come out with a quick response. . .yes. I think we ask some students to put their individual academic momentum in park for the group to re-assemble. And I know the logistical concerns that might come of this. #edchat

WELCOME to #edchat --- Topic: Is the industrial model of education wrapped in an agricultural calendar working as the best model for 21st Century education?
We don't have funding for those sort of camps. We have SS for Ss who didn't pass state tests in the spring. Definitely no "exploring" and "play" then. #Edchat

I don't think Students need more virtual in their lives. Too much tech has been introduced into education. And... I'm a Computer Science teacher. #edchat
It’s the paradigm that needs to shift. It really is not learner centered, but school centered. “When will we clean buildings?” “When will we plan?” #edchat
In reply to
@ShiftParadigm, @Rfpeterson80, @PaulWHankins, @karleydb, @tomwhitby
Both teachers and students need a break from school work otherwise the constant work can get overwhelming. Also, students need to be able to take time off to explore and enjoy the outdoors in the summer. #edchat
It’s important to point out that the resistance to change comes from the tourism industry as well. I’ve seen first-hand lobbyist work to change the schedule to explicitly benefit their industry. #edchat
#edchat Important when considering year-round school to consider that Ts and Ss would NOT be doing the same thing you do now but year-round. It's an opportunity to reinvent a new paradigm. Get outside the box!
I think that the issue that needs addressing is how districts make use of the traditional calendar that is being used. Is sufficient time being spent with RTI, are the students receiving the interventions they need? #edchat
In reply to
@ShiftParadigm, @Rfpeterson80, @PaulWHankins, @karleydb, @tomwhitby
I think some schools have considered it to ease issues with space. If the building is cramped and they can stagger student populations, the space is better utilized. #edchat
I agree. Those experiences would be great, but I don't see how my district could manage it. Do you have high-stakes tests in your states/districts? #Edchat
Teachers would get breast—maybe six weeks on and two weeks off all year round. And there could bed a four week break at some point for camp and longer vacations. #edchat
Believe me. I'm with you in this idea. I'm a rock-paper-scissors person really. But, the model of tech used for good. For advancement. Maybe even for enrichment. I teach ELA. To be able to offer extensions to our students? Perhaps. #edchat
Having gone to elementary school year round, I can say that myself as well as other students definitely became less motivated as soon as the summer rolled around. I also went to school where it was very hot, especially during the summer, so we all just wanted to go home. #edchat
Perhaps we need to relieve the stress on teachers. I met with a group today and they’re so stressed about state tests. We’ve carried accountability and high stakes tests way too far. #edchat
I'll bet we could get run out of town together (and my kit bag is already packed) if we made a suggestion that traditional vacation times and lengths are part of an older school model and tradition. #edchat Now, are we leaving together, Laura? Or am I walking a lonely road here?

Thanks @jennbinis... checks sources, then... *Climbs up on soap box...* Indeed, industrial model and agricultural calendar are oft proffered myths for why current system works poorly for many students and teachers. *Climbs down* #edchat
We no longer live in agricultural communities but we still hold school as if we do. Why should our school calendars reflect the needs of today’s learners? #edchat
Oh. To be sure. I can tell that that is the traditional transitions into the breaks and into the end of the year were the START of a year, people would question why we start so early or require a set number of days to do our work. #edchat
In reply to
@MsKromm, @ShiftParadigm, @Rfpeterson80, @karleydb, @tomwhitby
Yes! We need to do away with averaging grades.
Just because we can take a bunch of numbers and perform calculations on those numbers does not mean that the final numbers are valid or reliable measures of assessment. #sblchat#edchat
What if their summer jobs were extending the learning of students? With compensation, of course! How nice would it be to be deepening their skills and experiences as well! #edchat
Some tech integration is great, but there's too much emphasis on it. Too much adding tech just to add it. I like to just sit and chat with my students. #edchat
#edchat Boarding schools in the northeast sometimes have 1/2 days on Wed and Sat so they can do sports competitions on those afternoons. That's an example of Ind. schools teaming up to affect change they can all work with.
When considering classroom design (even online) - choose wisely as students who are low vision will really appreciate certain aspects such as large text, high contrast #edchat#speced#abed
I feel like both teachers and students need the summer break to prepare and get motivated for the following year. I know I was always excited to get back to school and for summer break! #edchat
I've really thought about this, Tom. I've thought about that 9th grader who might be able to take on dual credit courses who must track along until 11th or 12th grade to realize these opportunities. We've created a step system, yes? #edchat
The whole idea that summers off for farming is a farce. Most farmers plant in Spring and harvest in late summer to fall. With that logic we should be in school for most of the summer and winter only.
#edchat
The great thing about local school districts and non-nationalized education is that those communities could find a solution that works for them. Maybe it's the status quo. Maybe not. But they have the freedom to consider what is possible. #edchat
Having gone to elementary school year round, I can say that myself as well as other students definitely became less motivated as soon as the summer rolled around. I also went to school where it was very hot, especially during the summer, so we all just wanted to go home. #edchat
The school calendar will be difficult to change because it is now part of the American culture. Before a system can change, the culture must change. #Edchat
Wouldn’t it be awesome to let the kids tell us what schedule works best for them to learn? #edchat I’m sure some would dare to say never, but most would provide some enlightening responses!
#edchat But is that because you are gearing up for another experience like the one you just had? Re-imagine an experience that was less draining.....requiring less recovery and less re-motivating. "Less is more" "Leave em wanting more."
I feel like both teachers and students need the summer break to prepare and get motivated for the following year. I know I was always excited to get back to school and for summer break! #edchat
Absolutely. We have the ability to ask Ss metacognitive questions and consider their responses. Let them invest in this process....and I bet we get some GREAT ideas. #edchat
#edchat How Australia can help reform higher education in India - The Indian higher education system faces challenges like underfunding, lack of research work and poo https://t.co/TLs5Orb9RP
There definitely has been a step system created by grouping kids by age and moving them along year by year but it seems like the most organized way to teach. How else can we group them from the start of their academic careers? #edchat
Just like everything in ed it comes down to $. Some schools go 4 longer days and not 5 mostly to save on $. But this could be better for Ss too. Need research and data on this model.
#edchat
I think that students should do something supplementary over the summer in order to remember the information that they learned in the past year and to prepare for the year ahead. #edchat
I concur. And yet, a junior or senior needing to recover a credit or realize a missed credit may find themselves in the reverse. I guess I'm thinking that Doogie Howser out there who must wait in a traditional progression. #edchat
Some students are physically able to handle it in sports, but that is very different from class. And not to say that there are students mental mature enough to move ahead, but it would be hard to handle on a large scale. #edchat

It is not an ideal grouping system @tomwhitby but how do place children at the beginning of their education carrer? Do we then have 5 year old taking entrance tests in order to begin kindergarten? #edchat
Yes. So this would be a purposeful consideration that would affirm and allow the ready and capable student to make informed decisions for his or her academic tracking. Could this free up more elective/personal learning later in the secondary experience? #edchat
Love this question. Always curious about our agri start time, when the sun rises? And especially in Canada. Let’s stay home in the winter and go to school in the summer...or at least extend learning further into the summer. May encroach of Ts summer plans tho! #edchat

I hear you and I agree that a small number of young students are capable enough to make those decisions. We do accommodate them to some degree by allowing them to take certain classes at an advanced level... math, foreign language.. #edchat

Beyond the question of student's ability to withstand a year round school year, I know that many schools in this area of WI have no air conditioning. It seems like a small consideration, but summer time classes could lead to some very uncomfortable learning environment #edchat
Curious to see if anyone has asked industry about changes needed. I know in our area they need students with soft skills and able to work on teams. #edchat
21st century learning- I’m having my mind stretched by practitioners near and far... as I walk to my room at a conference. No schedule. No walls. Can’t that happen for students? #edchat
That's a really good point! Students would retain and remember more information so that the teachers wouldn't have to review as much when the students get back from break #edchat
Curious to see if anyone has asked industry about changes needed. I know in our area they need students with soft skills and able to work on teams. #edchat
But couldn’t a multiple week breaks over the course of the year be equally as beneficial for Ts and Ss? Joint PD and planning. A 10 week recharge in the summer shouldn’t be/isn’t necessary if we pace ourselves over the school year. @ShiftParadigm#edchat

@jennbinis checks sources, then *Climbs up on soap box* Prevailing approach to educ works well for some students and teachers. More of the same or attempts at innovating or reforming haven't made the approach work well for more students and teachers. *steps off box* #edchat
The agricultural calendar model may have been the best option before the industrialization of the American ag-industry, but a year-round 45-15 would be the most efficient in a contemporary school setting. https://t.co/tRS1Yk9RkB#EdChat
Can we agree that waking anyone up and sending them to school before coffee. . .before the cock crows. . .before sunrise. . .has a detrimental affect upon that singular soft skill of wishing another person a "good morning?" #edchat
That isn’t the tech companies fault. That is on education. #Education is a good 15-20 years beyond not just tech but the value of tech. It’s also difficult because we aren’t a for profit business so the cost is preventative as well. Poor training adds to that. #edchat

Maybe if we change it and expect them to mature accordingly they will. We can't say they won't. because we haven't tried it to nay great extent yet. #Edchat
I think summer is a great time for kids to have fun and rejuvenate their brains to get ready for the next grade. Summer also allows them time to educate themselves and can foster a student’s drive to want to learn more in school. #edchat
It seems like many go visit family out of town (or the country) for the long breaks (Christmas and summer break), so *maybe* it's actually better than weekends? #Edchat
