Monday April 4, 2016 5:30 AM EDT
good morning everyone! It's good to be back with the tribe!
Hello and good morning - so glad to be back! Happy
Good Morning friends! Connie from NY checking in. Missed you guys last week!
I read a book called The Teacher Wars over break. Puts us into a historical context. I recommend.
I read Rollergirl. What a great read for you elementary people!
Ugh! Horrible isn't it? It was in the 80's on Saturday! https://t.co/xrBNhaeQ4q
Went to Florida for a week, came back to 40 degree weather.
hi Connie - welcome back!
Good morning Been missing this chat! Tracy, 6th gr from MA here. Just back from
Parents are like students in this way. They need to approach tech 1 step at a time.
Hey friends-check out Manny's book recommendation! https://t.co/YWT64CBFwI
I read a book called The Teacher Wars over break. Puts us into a historical context. I recommend.
Yeah! I think winter forgot to go away in the NE!
I recommend "chasing the why" with parents who are hesitate to technology. Ask questions to understand their perspective.
Good morning . Glad to be back here after two weeks away. Elisa, 5th grade T in Quito, Ecuador.
Good morning ! Nice to be back to normal after a wonderfully relaxing . Let the rest of the year begin!
Good morning Carla checking in from in Atlanta... Learning, connecting, feeling inspired!
I was in Nashville this weekend: 60s. Came home to snow and gale force winds. Ugh.
I've not heard of that one Allison. Do you recall the author?
We are not 1:1, but I do not find that parents are resistant to technology.
glad to hear that !! https://t.co/xCII9hKvXU
Good morning ! Nice to be back to normal after a wonderfully relaxing . Let the rest of the year begin!
Involve parents! Get them using tech on back2school night. Start small w , show how powerful it can be for communication
Parents who don't allow hs Ss to use twitter: I invite them to follow me.
was working on my just a few minutes ago
Glad that is back!
Brian from Mass.
Good Morning . Gina from Cincinnati. Excited to see the Ss this morning!
I recommend having a parent tech night. Always wanted to do this at former school.
Same here Kathy. (How am I not surprised-LOL!!) https://t.co/cF970kitnC
We are not 1:1, but I do not find that parents are resistant to technology.
I haven't seen much push back from Parents. However, some Ss are reluctant.
Ugh. *rubs eyes and stretches with a yawn*. Is it time for already? Coffee in hand, let's get this day started! Susan from Jersey.
The in is through the child. Show an increase in engagement, communication, or ability w/ the tech and Parents will get on board.
At Parents Night I try to demonstrate the technology we use in the classroom.
Good morning all! I enjoy reading your tweets! You have good stuff!
sometimes parents are more resistant to technology then the Ss. Need to ease into the plan with plenty of info and PD for them.
I try to find out what they're objecting to in the first place.
Happy Monday! It is the start to a new week ... anything is possible!
Good morning! One week left for me until spring break!
Our school went 1:1 this year; I personally have not heard of any resistant parents. It's been exciting.
At parent night, I talk about all the skills Ss need to take the SBAC test.
Coffee first, then stretch !! https://t.co/Cbpw52Iau3
Ugh. *rubs eyes and stretches with a yawn*. Is it time for already? Coffee in hand, let's get this day started! Susan from Jersey.
We had a nearby district with a big parent movement resisting 1:1 iPads for K-2; wanted less screen time.
Meet parents where they are with technology. Just because they don’t embrace it now, doesn’t mean they won’t encourage it later.
Laughing here-sorry-a little slow this morning! Need...more...coffee!!
Is it resistance or fear of the unknown?
Checking in from snowy MA. Happy Monday
I email parents regularly and mention tech we are using and how it reflects the real world in business and college
I've seen a bit of that. Ss don't like being online all the time...even kids need a break!
by the way, I've been using the wrong hashtag. .
Where the tech is coming from is also important. is it a district wide initiative or a teacher run program?
We need to find a way to meet F2F!!! - you going to any of those?
From beginning of year plan Family Tech activities. Show how tech is used. My Family Events page https://t.co/6XydFrx3yD
At our literacy night, our ITS gave a demonstration of storia so that parents could see how we use it. Parents enjoyed the coaching.
my sons teacher used that idea we took a survey and signed up for remind! Love Remind!
I try to have Ss show how we amplify their work using tech. I record student reflections and that does seem to help Ps & Ss.
Offer time after school for students who do not have devices but no real issues from parents
I'm currently reading The Success Principles currently- positive thinking!
I've been leading a parent PD series for a few years to get parents in line with some of the tech we're using at school.
I am hoping for , still working on it! (funding is an issue!)
We don't have 1:1, but I am hearing rumors that it is coming soon. I think bringing them in & showing what you will do is important.
Marlena, this is awesome!
Good morning, . I'm Ku, Learning Coach, Argentina
I don't know if it is parent resistance or parent ignorance ... similar to what teachers/admin goes through when dealing with tech
It's not the being online but working on line. They are fighting having to do more work ! less listening https://t.co/lFRRegWzCo
I've seen a bit of that. Ss don't like being online all the time...even kids need a break!
For us it's more fear; we're not 1:1, but parents resist tech; We are working very hard to educate
went back and found this b/c I just got my call - 2 hr delay
Our parents are open to some tech, resistant to others - twitter seems to scare them
Great comparison!
https://t.co/oCT1PnBz0n
I don't know if it is parent resistance or parent ignorance ... similar to what teachers/admin goes through when dealing with tech
its the Hist. of Ed & Gov. A breakdown of Ed plans since the 1700s. At the end she lays out what she thinks works and why
Can't stay this morning but wanted to offer a welcome back to my friends. Hope Spring Break was wonderful!
I am really lucky. I haven't felt any resistance at all. Just many do not have computers at home. and can't do work there.
Reminds me of how much my Mom loved Norman Vincent Peale:)
LOL Still too tired...that was supposed to be "in a relationship"... with my coffee and pillow.
It is all in how we present the devices & how we use it. Tech is not a baby sitter. A tool that does not replace the Tr
I think it starts w educating the P as well as the child. Some Ps are reluctant to give their kids devices. We must tell them WHY.
Were you off last week as well?
wow, totally opposite on my end. In elementary school and Ss are gung ho where Ps r sometimes timid.
I'm running into less resistance on tech from parents, but we have Ss with internet issues at home. 😁
yes. When teachers talk tech they aren't thinking its an answer to all things. We still need teachers.
I'm going to edcamp ladies- hope to see you there! https://t.co/GjANjz62Id
We need to find a way to meet F2F!!! - you going to any of those?
Some parents express concern about diff Ts using diff platforms. Confusing but real life
I would hope in ANY initiative that school leaders start with the WHY!!
I'm in HS Ss are so used to the Ts "doing" everything & Ss being passive. Gotta break them out of that https://t.co/Be7rW3wR8F
wow, totally opposite on my end. In elementary school and Ss are gung ho where Ps r sometimes timid.
Many faculty members at my school utilize QR codes of their class/contact information and use Twitter/blogs.
yes me, too! Want to use what they know and I can keep my "school" stuff, thank you very much
Using Google classroom, my Ss have access to agenda and assignments when absent.
My goal next week on my break is to figure out my summer Would love wine with you both!
Parents seem so much more in tune with Facebook. Hard to get them twitter. Do you find this to be true?
That's true for all of us, colleagues, too:)
Since my Ss are little, most parents concerned abt safety. Me 2! So I talk abt what I do 2 protect. 1st unit is dig cit, incl safety
YES! If they can see the excitement & the practicality through the child then success is sure to come!
youd be surprised how quickly the why gets lost when planning an initiative.
That's the situation I shall find myself in when we go 1:1.
back in session last week, off week before so we've had at least a little post-vacay routine
I guess you have to work real hard then to keep it out in front!
https://t.co/K7awba94qL
youd be surprised how quickly the why gets lost when planning an initiative.
So true!!! https://t.co/xOB5tD5Yfj
I'm in HS Ss are so used to the Ts "doing" everything & Ss being passive. Gotta break them out of that https://t.co/Be7rW3wR8F
wow, totally opposite on my end. In elementary school and Ss are gung ho where Ps r sometimes timid.
my sons teacher tweets -(glad he does) I think resistance from Ps is mostly a lack of understand the purpose
Funding issue for me as well, hence I'm only going to the free edcamp. https://t.co/WWzLfvDjCe
I am hoping for , still working on it! (funding is an issue!)
It's hard. We rely on google docs, discovery ed and fasttmath (basic skills) and more.
So jealous...I wish it was that way
Give Ps platform for voice to see what their concerns are, then let Ss become their Ts to advocate for uses https://t.co/90ONJasv6X
I've been working on a plan to help planning. Its a work in progress.
. When our middle & upper school rolled out 1:1 last year, we had many parent PD's offered Result: you can never have enough.
Keep fighting the good fight! It will pay off!
https://t.co/R5gL45QBHj
I've been working on a plan to help planning. Its a work in progress.
Too funny! Love this:) Thanks for the giggle!
As a specialist, I can't even get parents to view my online progress report!
This is so awesome Christina! I'm flying in 4 Thur night so I can B there 4 !
Yes, absolutely. I think it's bc they don't understand how to use. https://t.co/33HUxVsPjb
Parents seem so much more in tune with Facebook. Hard to get them twitter. Do you find this to be true?
I think that's common. I'd like to see more attention to digital citizenship in my school at the start of next yr
I have 3-4 w/o home access. I modify the work. I support by doing some typing from Ss' handwritten notes
Glad you all are back! We are beginning the school week with snow all day in SE Mass!!
hmm..it's okay. Pm me. Like anything good and not so good.
Absolutely! Once you get them to the trough, show them the excitement, they see the possibilities are endless.
well, no one's complaining here - you're the fearless leader in this, big ups to you
I agree - like the idea of parent PD to counteract that.
Lost, confused, misinterpreted, misunderstood, miscommunicated. https://t.co/6xi69Xpovk
youd be surprised how quickly the why gets lost when planning an initiative.
That would be most excellent! I am very good at wine-ing!!!
Hello from Kuwait! One piece I've seen missing from multiple schools is training parents the why and how of tech in schools
This is a huge issue. In rural areas students can't even use cell data. https://t.co/Spo2uItnjY
I'm running into less resistance on tech from parents, but we have Ss with internet issues at home. 😁
We are hoping to get to 1:1 next year. Funding is tight in our little district.
is now trending in USA, ranking 13
this is great & I agree it's effective & important. It also strengthens relationships with parents.
Cynthia!!! So good to see you! As usual, you have made me smile out loud. Thanks my friend!
Exactly but it happens so fast. we talk about 1 problem and that leads to 20 others. drives me insane.
We incorporate common sense media. Share at school and w Ps
I do. But I also found Ps more interested in my personal FB acct than my class one.
I find most parents have phones with internet but not computers.
we are not 1.1 yet, but are going to be the testing ground in our 7-8 bldg. next year. I want to hear more.
Stacey is , I'm creating a cookbook
That's my experience too. Ps and Ts much more resistant than Ss who lead the way
me too. Notice the divide between our middle school and upper school Ss on Twitter and all parents on Facebook.
maybe involve kids in holding a parent's hand to get them checking?
Great! I can't wait to meet you in person. So wishing I could go to the entire conference! https://t.co/N81Mbu6nnI
This is so awesome Christina! I'm flying in 4 Thur night so I can B there 4 !
Sorry to miss the chat, but need to plan for extra long commute. Spring snow is fleeting, but causes trouble https://t.co/bTFXX3kqG5
Glad you all are back! We are beginning the school week with snow all day in SE Mass!!
I have to clarify misconceptions that I assign work online then I sit down & don't help. Have to explain my interactive classroom.
Is there a date for the edcamp, Christina?
Okay, next week let me plan! https://t.co/OjZLLffgGj
Great! I can't wait to meet you in person. So wishing I could go to the entire conference! https://t.co/N81Mbu6nnI
This is so awesome Christina! I'm flying in 4 Thur night so I can B there 4 !
Me, too. I set up a 2ndary FB acct just for school stuff. Ps, even colleagues. Separation=good.
Exactly! Many Ps will think we are letting technology do all the teaching!
glad your here. Don't forget Voxer chat group !! ( PS sorry about the snow !) https://t.co/wUlh6kpO7Z
Sorry to miss the chat, but need to plan for extra long commute. Spring snow is fleeting, but causes trouble https://t.co/bTFXX3kqG5
Glad you all are back! We are beginning the school week with snow all day in SE Mass!!
Huge issue for us. Our electricity is shaky. Ts and Ss without generators can't depend on internet
same here, no access. But, they can use Word on device, and upload to googledocs later. https://t.co/EUR1fEu89n
I am really lucky. I haven't felt any resistance at all. Just many do not have computers at home. and can't do work there.
notice this concern growing each year. Feel the need to teach Ss & Ps Digital citizenship more and more each day.
We've been 1:1 for a few years at hs; ms went 1:1 this year and look forward to them coming to hs ready to go.
It's on Friday - either July 8 or 9. Let's all do some wine- ing!!! https://t.co/JdGVLYdo0n
Is there a date for the edcamp, Christina?
It's on Friday July 8th - Free!!
great thinking...saw a graphic about how work online is more of a tattoo than a footprint
Very important-Teaching Ss how to be responsible digital citizens has to be supported by parents and schools.
with cyber safety being such key issue, what are your ideas in teaching students and parents digital citizenship?
Yes, we see the same. Twitter for Ts, Facebook for Ps, Instagram for Ss.
Have a great Monday everyone!
We don't have it due to bandwidth issues. Hope that changes.
Great start to the day with Thank you
Google Docs Offline also works in most cases.
I missed these conversations last week when you guys had Spring Break! Glad we're back at it :)
Completely true in our school
still need the computers..
Today, we will be participating in workshop with As, Ts, Ps and Ss. It will be interesting to see how it goes.
I live very close to Camden Yards. Today is opening day. Traffic is going to suck.
Yes, the edcamp is the day before. Stacey are you heading up for this??
I because is back! Yeah!!!
Agreed. We don't have anywhere near enough, but I can always dream!
Our schl is 1:1 Chromebooks in 3rd-6th. Our Tech Coord teaches and we monitor use. We are VERY fortunate.
We are blessed to do what we do. Take time to reconnect with Ss & Ts today as you ! See you tomorrow or in chats.
I'll have to look into this, especially if so many friends are going.
Hi Kathy. I think the big clunky device called a computer is slowly drifting away. hand held devices will be it
Yes, you've got it. is HUGE for Ss now too. https://t.co/BiMne4NRKx
Yes, we see the same. Twitter for Ts, Facebook for Ps, Instagram for Ss.
Got to go thanks for early inspiration
I recently went to presentation recommended Ps & Ss google themselves periodically to check what comes up.
Yes! My daughters only use that now!
what's the word? Are you staying in your jammies?
Have a great Monday! Thanks for inspiration crew!
This is excellent. Parents aren't digital natives like their kids so we have to help them understand tech integration
I am already dressed. Go in early for the quiet and plan
Mine too! 😉 I'm constantly saying "don't add me to your story, I look horrible" haha! https://t.co/CoTAuUqKlj
Yes! My daughters only use that now!
And we go back next week for a long 11 week term. Term 2 - the dark and dreary term with all the assessment
I typically don't 'friend' Ps or Ss on my personal FB. Direct them to class page...many lose interest. ;)
oh man you have to come!!!

I think you have to see what most Ps are using. What about an app? Any schools using one?
Thought: if I go in early, then I can leave at a normal time. (that's the plan at least) lol
We are legally not allowed to friend Ps or Ss.
I keep off facebook to be safe
But I will have that second cup of coffee!
Glad you all are back! We are beginning the school week with snow all day in SE Mass!! Free - https://t.co/UcXloMpaKD
that 1 day will be a GREAT day!
I do a lot to keep Ps in the loop: FB, Twitter, and I print hard copies for Ps w/out internet access at home.
A couple of weeks away from and I'm totally off my sparkchat game - trying to catch up on comments from 20 min ago
Have a great Monday ! Welcome back to all of you who were on break!
What's the deal with ? Could somebody fill me in, because I'd like to know!
had same thought Connie - went in search of title in library . Extra for all today!
with spider safety being such key issue, what are your ideas in teaching students and parents digital citizenship?
Great convo! So much 2 think about. Gotta run! So happy 2 be back w/Ss after one wk of spring break & another 4 PD.
We so missed this daily pick me up when they took spring break last week! Welcome back

welcome back. I usually start the parents out on technology first before the Ss like an inside scoop kinda of thing. Familiarity.
Hi Carl from Emerald Australia here
How are we all?
"We are okay," reports Brian in CO. "And you?"
Right on. Approach parent resistance by approaching parents: reach out, share, question, understand roots. https://t.co/bqADZhDvaP
welcome back. I usually start the parents out on technology first before the Ss like an inside scoop kinda of thing. Familiarity.
I'm not immune to my own tech anxiety so I want PS to know that even baby steps count as progress! Have a great day
Good morning from FL, MT crew!
Enjoying week 2 of the school holidays. Trying to relax although I know I have a bag of correction
I communicate w/families regularly about tech. Haven't experienced a resistance to date.
A bit overcast, but Spring Break makes it worth it!
Lead w/*why* when responding to resistance. Purpose can motivate, inspire, persuade. By itself, how feels like window dressing.
I haven't experienced resistance but know some families have poor internet due to geography
Nice. We are just starting Autumn here but tomorrow will be 29C. Nice time to be on holidays.
does that mean students can't get homework done b/c of poor connections?
Main issue is access to school intranet and downloading docs for some Ss. Need to be aware
Some of our students live in nearby hills where internet is still satellite rather than broadband
That would make a big difference for accessibility. How does your school support these students?
Some don't do it well. I ensure they have paper access and sometimes more time. can stay at school and use facilities
Always good to have a plan for accommodations. Shows students a teacher cares!
UYou just have to be reasonable. Ss understand and expect that

Hi
How's everyone today. carl from Emerald Oz
Good morning - back to school after spring break.
Morning, ! Chantell from IN, my first day back from break as well!
Hi Paige. We still have another week before we head into our autumn term
I let my kids share their excitement for the work we are doing with tech - they sell it to parents.
Baby steps! Show Ps ans Ss that technologgy isn't a game or an addon, but can change instruction! Show off+keep telling your story!
Have a showcase night, where Ss show off what they have learned and produced with technology. Make Ss the Ts for the Ps!
