We chat every Tuesday night at 8:30-9:30 pm CST. All are welcome, especially EarlyEd teachers, leaders & experts. Co-founded & moderated by @techwnancy @JessicaCabeen & @VealHeidi
Hello #ECEchat friends! I'm president of ISTE's Early Learning Network. I've been an early ed, tech and gifted teacher, a tech coordinator, a tech integration mentor, a curriculum writer & a conference director.
Hello #ECEchat! Sarah here! I am a part of the @iste Early Learning Network! I am a first grade teacher in Maryland and so excited to be here with you tonight!
Hey #ECEchat family! Katy checking in, #RISDprek Program Specialist in N. Texas. I love advocating for the littles & cant wait to discuss digital citizenship!
Hi #ECEchat friends! Heidi here, District Early Childhood Program Administrator in North Texas. I'm passionate about all things #PreK, #leadership & #CodingInPk
I am Gail Lovely from Friendswood Texas and I am an independent educator. I works with teachers and others in wise use of technologies with little learners. I am tHRILLED to join this #ecechat
#ECEchat digital citizenship is a set of skills that has to be learned like good manners are over time. no one is born with digital citizenship or good manners
A1. Our world is headed in a digital direction, so it is vital that we start integrating tech into the classroom. It is also important that we teach our students how to use it with good manners! #ECEchat
A1 #ecechat It is impt to guide little ones to be digital citizens because much of what we do with them is about being good citizens and digital should be included. Also, their families may not know how to approach this topic.
A1: It is important to guide our students because, technology is so vast in its content and potential that it is easy for a young person to fall astray and lose sight of the opportunities that technology can provide for them in their education. #ECEchat
A1: They do so much in the digital world! It is so important to help them build their understanding at a young age so they can carry their knowledge throughout their educational careers! #ecechat
A1 As EC teachers we are building the digital base for our littles to use as the progress up through upper grades; super important to know in this day and age #ECEchat
This is such an important point, Gail. The digital world is still very new; I think many families are very confused as to what it means. We can help families by guiding children. #ECEchat
A1 (more ideas) #ecechat I think it is also important to realize that this is something which is not ALL that different in some very basic ways from other "good manners" or "citizenship".
A1 Kids are born with devices at their fingertips, it is important for their safety and others to teach them how to interact digitally appropriately #ECEChat
I want to implement purposefully/effectively esp. b/c, in 2017, many of my students (and their parents) have limited or no access to tech/digital world outside of my classroom. #ECEchat
A1: Digital useage is rapidly advancing all around us. Need to get an early start so Ss can learn the basic skills early on that'll help them later on. #ECEChat
A1 (more ideas) #ecechat I think it is also important to realize that this is something which is not ALL that different in some very basic ways from other "good manners" or "citizenship".
Welcome @SharonHirschy I agree, digital citizenship has to be directly taught. Otherwise we would be leaving our most vulnerable learners out in the digital world with NO guidance. #ECEchat
For students to learn about technology, as teachers, we need to make sure we are pursuing tech tools and continue to learn more about digital citizenship. #ECEchat
A1 teaching them the skills & foundation early allows for immediate application as they move forward. T's can have Ss apply their knowledge sooner if they come w the early skill set! Imagine the growth they will have!! #ECEchat
A1: Our kids today do not know a world without technology and it is important that they know the expectations and boundaries to be safe and learn. #ecechat
Yes, and we need to remember that tech for many is a smart phone... not a fancy tablet or laptop. recent research suggests 98% of families with littles have a connected smart phone... #ecechat
A2. A young digital citizen using tech to learn more and gain knowledge. So often, we see the negative side of technology, but there are so many positives that can come from it! #ECEchat
A2: A young digital citizen should be respectful, encouraging, engaged, and have a purpose behind every thing they put on the internet, or use technology for. #ECEchat
Love that you said purposefully/effectively @thejadedvoice! I am so in agreement. So much of what we do comes down to "intentionality" for me with our littles. #ECEchat
#ECEchat posting pics, dialog, narrative, etc between class members even if just a classroom grouping can have dire consequences if digital citizenship not at the forefront of the tech process
A2: A young digital citizen knows their classroom is the world! They are respectful, thoughtful, empathetic, and engaged as a student of the world! #ECEchat
A2 A young digital citizen has been taught to use a device to take pics & make recordings of their work to share it with an audience, like their parents or other classmates. #ECEchat
A2 using iPad to research, create, and differentiate “faux” flipped lessons in @Seesaw & other apps (can lock on iPad) “Can I do this in @Seesaw so my mom sees it” #ecechat

Yes! If we can teach children to take a breath before engaging and be mindful in their action, that's huge! Being respectful, intentional and kind. #ECEchat
A3. Kids are submerged in media starting at a very young age. They will need guidance to navigate the media realm. I cannot think of a better person than a teacher for a media mentor! #ECEchat
Especially because much of what early learners do is hands-on & project based. A picture or video in a digital portfolio like @Seesaw is such a great way to document student development over time. #ECEchat
A2 understand purpose of various technologies & utilize appropriately; Ss use google image search for info & inspiration & observational drawings; SeeSaw to document learning #ECEchat
A3: A Media Mentor to me is someone who comes along side a young person and guides them as they discover and explore the possibilities the digital world has to offer. They help the student to gain knowledge through technology rather than, "mindless screen time #ECEchat
A3: I think it is so important to involve parents in understanding digital citizenship and what it looks like/sounds like in and out of the classroom! #ECEchat
A3: To be a true "media mentor," you have to be a skilled, respectful & responsible contributor, to model this for students. Not enough adults qualify as such. #ecechat
A3: Hemm. If I was proposed this question from my instructor I would say it's mostly the teacher. But I can see where it could be the Ss too. I know some in previous chats have said they've learned new stuff, like shortcuts, from Ss they didn't know about. #ECEChat
A3 #ecechat I think that modeling goes a long way in mentoring. Choosing when I use tech and when I don't. Labelling by "thinking aloud" the choices I make with tech and also by choosing tools carefully I am mentoring the little ones.
RT Q3: What does the term media mentor mean to you? As an educator of young children, do you consider yourself a media mentor? Why or why not? #ECEchat
A3: A media mentor shares and addresses instructionally appropriate tech concepts and facilitates making sure learning goals are being achieved #ecechat
A2 young digital learner will follow expectations we as T's have modeled & will have questions & show excitement, engagement, motivation, growth, enthusiasm.. #ecechat
#ECEchat I use lots of media in music lessons displayed on my Prom panel. I document all sources when using specific reading passages about composers, genres, etc so my students can see where I got my material. It's part of my docs, PPTs, flipcharts, etc. am media mentor
So important. Kids are going to stare into screens; help them learn & grow for part of that time. When my kids begin listening to music on their own; I made sure they heard plenty of show tunes, Buddy Holly, The Clash. They never had time for Brittney Spears. #ECEchat
A3: Guiding and learning along with the students. I would say that I am an experienced media mentor that is always willing to try out new things in the tech world. #ecechat
A3 Yes, I am a media mentor! I model digital citizenship by guiding students to access technology to facilitate learning new things & enhance communication & interaction not reinforce tech use in isolation like a digital pacifier. #ECEchat
A3: I also think it is so important to model for students how tech can help them become creators of technology not just consumers of technology! #ecechat
A3 a media mentor can be at any level- from Ss helping Ss to T's modeling & teaching as well as mentoring other T's or collaborating together. I consider myself a media mentor to an extent- as far as my knowledge will take me to help others #ecechat
I love seeing @MsBowlesRWJH lead media development. She ensured her students knew how to use social media as a tool to enhance their ideas in all fields. She taught that the information was only as good as you could present it. #ECEchat
Exactly! Children will so easily fall into "whats popular" or the next "trendy gossip" that the internet has to offer, rather than seeing the opportunities for education that it can provide! #ECEchat

True! I learned so much about digital media from people much younger than me. From my teen kids to 20-something employees, they taught me many of the "rules of the road." I'm glad I was somehow humble enough to listen & learn. #ecechat
Great point! So how do we ensure they can search and find facts on their own? @JBroussardIT has a great fake facts lesson on vetting information from media #ecechat.

Q4: Model, model, and model some more! Additionally, older students can be mentors to young students to help them develop their digital citizenship skills! #ecechat
#ECEchat using my Prom panel as a class we do the online digital citizenship activities. discuss as a class each activity/statement before determining which answer is correct
A4 #ecechat We start the 3 Year olds with taking pictures, AFTER asking permission and they begin learning from the first day "Does this picture show what I want it to show?" and this is a building block where they start. Remember for 3 YO this is a BIG step.
A3 The best mentors are passionate about what and whom they are mentoring. If you show how imperative it is to you that you behave thoughtful, respectfully, responsibly, bravely & vulnerably online, your mentees will be more likely to embrace those values as well. #ecechat
#ECEchat followup A4 Then I send home note to parents re what was done in class and tell parents to do the activity at home with their child and discuss as complete the activity together
I created this basic primer on how to search effectively a few years ago; I am expanding it into a practical, plain language video-based course. https://t.co/sZLJAgINrP Publishing some of the lessons here: https://t.co/Ln9UwnzJ6c#ecechat

A4 model, model, model...work in small groups w Ss & tech-have conversations about the tech, citizenship, how we take care of our stuff- utilize monitoring Ss tech time for formative assessments - listen & talk w them-examples & explanations go a long way w our littles #ecechat
A4: they must practice it. They must utilize it hands on. Just like we teach riding a bike reading, or cooking... social media skills are as important as learning to drive. Small steps #ECEchat

A4 (more #ecechat) Also, you know how children notice EVRYTHING... like when your socks don't match? Modeling is key, labeling it is key too so they notice what you hope they notice, and then pointing it out when THEY do it too!
A4 By our best examples but also the opposite. Show them how feelings are hurt when one isn't responsible. Take a colleague's drawing and put your name on it...discuss that act with kids. Engage empathy. #ECEchat
A4: I've seen many examples of teachers who guided students to write their own "rules of the road" for digital citizenship. They had more respect for their own rules than they would have had for a document that resembled an AUP. #ecechat
A5 #ecechat Funny isn't it that the process is much the same... model it, label it, share it, point it out when they do it.... I think it is important with adults to also admit you make mistakes, are still learning etc...
A5 We have a Tech committee and offer short PD lessons for Ts to teach Ts; I use same concept in class letting Ss teach other Ss when they excel in a particular app #ecechat

A5 tossing in tech to everyday activities w Ss. At our school we have Appy Hour & T's get together, present, share & learn! And we have a blast doing it! Then we share how we integrated it all with our Ss! #ecechat
A5 Provide differentiated learning opportunities for Ss & collaborate with colleagues so everyone benefits! Work smarter, not harder! #sharingiscaring#ecechat
A5: Create learning opportunities for students in different classes and grades to teach each other! Facilitate conversations and collaboration! #ecechat
A5: "What you do speaks so loudly that I can't hear a word you say." Show how imperative it is to you that you be thoughtful, respectful, responsible, brave & vulnerable online, and your mentees will be more likely to embrace those values as well. #ecechat
A5 Utilizing the tech committee to share and inspire Ts &Ss in digital learning tools. Collaborate, practice together, involve them with a school wide seesaw. #ECEChat
Love the cross-classroom work idea, @msallenteaches. And as Bloom shared with us, it is when we teach something to someone else that we really grasp the concept. #ECEchat
A6 I'm going to continue pairing w other grade levels- prek loves to show off their tech skills 😉 and we love to learn from our other grade levels- our Ss collaborate just like us T's do! #ecechat
A6: Great to see so many participants acknowledge that adults & kids are all figuring this out together. We don't have to have all the answers at the ready; we need to ask good questions & truly listen to the responses. #ecechat
A6: I need to get with the other teaching teams in my building and dive into this; their Ss are mine too we should plan and have more PD on this. #ECEChat
