#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Jumping in before our convo, pausing on my first ever volunteer transcription work for TED/TEDx — I picked @chrisemdin ‘s TEDxNYED talk from April 2012. #HipHopEd
If you are just joining the chat, over the past two weeks we discussed Hip-Hop from the years 1988 and 1998. Tonight is 2008 and next week we will end in 2018 #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd class of 2008 gave us The Recession by Jeezy. The first gift I ever received from a student was a burned copy of this album. Halfway through my first listen, I knew I would use it in my classroom.

#HipHopEd I was in my second year of teaching, I was teaching a combined Grade 6/7 class of a mixed bag of abilities, but I would say social justice topics was the glue that bound this class more than the hip hop the students were vibin' to at that time.
I was doing education research at @carnegielearn, kids were 4 and 1 (therefore I was constantly sleep deprived). Still under a rock wrt hip-hop and listening to toddler music :/ #hiphoped
#HipHopEd I think 2day I am going to learn and read because in 2008, I was still reelin' from the loss of Jay Dee, was quite impressed with the previous year's Common's "Finding Forever", and was enamered with The Roots "Rising Down". However, I couldn't get my students w/them.
2008 would have been my 2nd-3rd year teaching & I was just learning how to connect with my students. Hip-hop wasn't in solid rotation for me but I still remember one of my students telling me her favorite song was Big Poppa #HipHopEd
While 2008 brought us Yanks tons of one hit wonders and over hyped tracks, the UK's @DizzeeRascal and legendary Down South MC @BunBTrillOG collab'd on a track https://t.co/NX77R0u3VL
Sadly, I don't remember it getting tons of promo on this side of the pond tho.

Say what you will about Kanye but the influence of the raw emotion and minimalism of 2008 album 808s & heartbreak set a tone for R&B singers like the weekend who often sang about numbness and pain. Would we have been as receptive? #HipHopEd
Fast forward to 2018 and an overlooked subgroup of hip hop youth is conflicted and defeated by murder of disruptive and controversial SoundCloud rapper xxxtentacion. No doubt 808s played a fundamental role in the appeal of x’s music to many #HipHopEd
The Game - My Life ft. Lil Wayne https://t.co/xQSyI00TE8 via @YouTube#HipHopEd reflection on the impact of surviving violence and what is the purpose of our individual lives
You ain’t never lied bout that one, bruh! That’s my word, today I was jamming to “All Goes Down” by @kanyewest and reminiscing on how his music from that era STILL speaks to me....”things we buy to cover up what’s inside...” #HipHopEd
In 2008, I was a Facility Manager of a group before starting my own organization. But, my two jams for sure were Alicia Keys, #NoOne and Neyo's #MissIndependent#HipHopEd
Let’s see...in ‘08, I was in my third year university. Full time course load, three jobs and 3 school clubs. Lots of Rick Ross, T-Pain, Plies and Lil Wayne in my playlist. #HipHopEd
10 yrs ago, I was living in NYC/BK and knee deep in NYC underground Hip-Hop scene, going to 2-6 shows and events a night, promoting intl acts, underground radio on occasion, doing environmental activism w/ https://t.co/Dm3taVTVyq and working for a horrid edu non profit #hiphoped
Hip-Hop was in transition mode in 2008 when you look back 10 years later. Some of the artists are still making music today while others of note 10 years ago are not. Style and business changed within Hip-Hop as well #HipHopEd
The introduction of the smartphone has changed how artists interact with their fans. Teachers can learn from how artists engage young people through various social media platforms #HipHopEd
I must have played Nas “Black President” 100,000 times in 2008. I went to university in a border city about 5 minutes away from Detroit and the election excitement definitely made its way across the river. #HipHopEd
How could I forget- MIA shook up north america from across the pond! Completely redefined the game for being fearless, controversial, and unapologetic. Oh and performed like a champ 9 months pregnant with Hova, TI and Lil Wayne on stage #hiphoped

I was working in mental health counseling adolescents. Live your life by bad gal riri and TIP was giving me life along with Neyo's Miss Independent. Couldn't tell me nothing 💃🏾😎 #HipHopEd
just like MCs are challenged to grow with & adapt to changing audiences to keep listeners engaged, teachers must continuously do the same for their students. this means truly understand the desires and needs of those you serve. #HipHopEd
Respect 2 Plies who always took out a homeless person he found in every city he performed in to dinner, a spot in a hotel for a night, and some spending money from someone who cares. I will always have so much respect for him because of that #HipHopEd
I will NEVER forget! One of the student groups I was in organized a watch party in the student centre. When the results came in...we ran out into the streets and celebrated. Pure elation! Makeshift parades in the street at 1 and 2 in the morning. #HipHopEd
Q-Tip’s “Gettin’ Up” sampled Black Ivory’s “You and I” and “Life is Better” paid tribute to hip hop legends. Also, listen to the bass guitar in “Manwomanboogie.” Classic album, The Renaissance! #HipHopEd

In 2008 I was turning 40, married 10 years, raising 2 children and a newly ordained minister; I was listening to Hip-Hop spiritually like I hadn't before #HipHopEd
I was working at a group home trying to persuade the program director to let the boys listen to Lupe Fiasco, Strange Fruit Project, Murs, and Wordsworth.
“I'm not loving you, the way I wanted to
What I had to do, had to run from you
I'm in love with you, but the vibe is wrong
And that haunted me, all the way home” - love lockdown by Kanye West from 808s & heartbreak, 2008 #HipHopEd
A study of @Tip from "Paper Trail" to "Us or Else" and his community involvement is a lesson in maturing and understanding the power of your voice #HipHopEd
Take the top Hip-Hop artists from 2008 and have students create categories and then have the students determine if the category still exists and if so what artist from today would be in that spot #HipHopEd
I think 08 is when a lot of my favorite artist began to mature business wise and their music reflected it. It's like the HH I grew up on grew up #hiphoped
As a Thankful Father of 4, and 9 Grands, Guru’s “Count Your Blessings” was daily meditation that supported my mindfulness as a Black Man in America #HipHopED

Man, this is one of the things I'm constantly trying to emphasize with my colleagues. Things would be a lot easier if we meet them halfway, but take them elsewhere. #HipHopEd
2008 served as a reminder for the global expansion of hip hop- specifically exhibited by Jay-Z’s special performance at Glastonbury. A huge “fuck you” to those who worked effortlessly to discredit hip-hop’s importance and connection to the entire musical lineage. #HipHopEd
