A1: I really value compassion and perseverance and try to instill the importance of both in my classroom every day.
A1: The MOST iimportant SEL skills are the ones needed by the Ss to work well in your classroom community.
A1: Anything that builds self-esteem and empathy. Realizing how they effect each Ss feelings about their environment.
A1: One of the core ones we help teachers start their school year with is helping students learn about self-regulation
A1: Do Cooperation/Collaboration fit into this category?
A1: I find it varies from yr to yr with each group of Ss. This year we need to work on preserving and teamwork.
This is the chat for me! We are working on “Self Regulation”.
Self-Regulation is HUGE! https://t.co/JTpyArFwpg
A1: One of the core ones we help teachers start their school year with is helping students learn about self-regulation
A1: I do think self management is essential to being successful- but then, I think SEL skills are important!
I love that you mentioned COMPASSION. So important for others to show that and EMPATHY.
I can't decide which is the most important...depends.
A1 Yes self regulation hits home. Today.
Good point each class, just like each Ss is different. You have to have minor in psych to teach!
I agree! It’s hard to pick just one!
I feel like both are so hard for my low SE students... they need it so much more too!
Good point. I think sometimes it’s hard for Ss to think about how they affect others.
LOL, yes, along with teaching with have lots of hats to wear in the classroom each and every day.
A2: We have class meetings, follow the Leader in Me, and talk a lot about grit as our theme this year!
A2: I think I try to model for my Ss and staff as principal on how to treat and speak to each other. Getting to their level too
A2 We are trained in Not just morning meeting but the whole social curriculum.
A2: Our faculty read The Essential 55 this summer and then picked 12 we wanted to work on as a school.
A2:Responsive Classroom strategies & fortunate use reading & writing curriculum from Collaborative Classroom. Huge SEL component.
I guess it does depend on the day and situation. https://t.co/GYuUqfxhnE
I can't decide which is the most important...depends.
A2: We have one main goal in our room- to GROW. In every way! Our classroom climate encourages and allows for mistakes.
A2: We all have them posted and they are referred to each morning during announcements.
That and I meant how they fit into the classroom culture. Understanding of self in order to understand
A2: As teachers, parents and role models, it's important to make sure to model these skills to students
... I'm checking out as I tweet... what is the difference between free and pro? My school won't pay for it...
Hi Jerry! Sharing your Pages at the conference on Wed. :) Thx for your work!
Important to have those reminders all over all day!
Can you show how they are posted? I would like to post them too!
A2: But beside our Essential 12, I am using to work on SEL skills this year thanks to mtg at ISTE.
I just LOVE the word GRIT!!! Makes me think of that girl in the John Wayne movie True Grit “I got Grit!” https://t.co/LEBSDLkKkp
A2: We have class meetings, follow the Leader in Me, and talk a lot about grit as our theme this year!
Don’t have any pics of them right now but I’ll send you some.
A2 Try to connect classroom rules to Ss hopes and dreams. The rules are the agreement so those happen.
Yes - I understand what you mean now. That can be hard for so many.
Q3: Does your school or community support the development of social-emotional learning? If so, how? https://t.co/Ki4sv3o2Yg
A2: My HR Ss had a huge shoutout during announcements because they were complimented twice last week about they hall behavior.
Having those "go to" lines you say are also effective as constant reminders.
A3:Yes my school has a grant to fund an additional social https://t.co/uZSTPahDkg with more kids having SE difficulties.
A3: To help school leaders foster social-emotional learning, you can see our recent webinar with some tips: https://t.co/NjObQke6bV
A2: One Ts opened her door to see why she “saw” a group of Ss going down the hall, but didn’t “hear” them at all. Gotta love it!
A3:We use one book, one school to have a theme for the year. Tickets are used to recognize good behavior. Special event each month.
A2: School is working towards becoming . Guidance Counselor comes into classes 2x/wk w/ lessons. We supplement
A3: this is hard for me to answer... I want to say we are supported but there's not a school-wide plan, program, or system
A3: We share “Good News” each morning about Ss who go above and beyond in helping others, using manners etc.
That’s huge - it’s hard sometimes to get passed those. I like GROW as a theme. https://t.co/9JjN5JW5pB
A2: We have one main goal in our room- to GROW. In every way! Our classroom climate encourages and allows for mistakes.
A3: We are beginning more, still more work to do. I think it is best when can fit in with relevance of planning, but that is hard
We do the same. Anyone can write a “shout out” for the principal to read with morning announcements.
Sometimes strong expectations are more powerful than a "plan". That way each Ts feels some flexibility within.
A3: We do have school wide shout outs on the morning announcements ..
Start small school-wide with a Kudos jar or bulletin board where anyone can share a good “deed” type of thing.
A3: Our school/comm. def. supports the development of . Professional development opportunities have been offered to help Ts
Gotta run a little short first time. Nice chat! Thanks for invite talk soon!
A4: Keeping Ps in the “loop” for every aspect of what we are doing in school is so-o-o-o important. So is no different.
A4: I interviewed over 300 Ts for & often heard about a disconnect btw what's taught at home & in the class on
A4 Parents should model appropriate behavior and be mindful of their children's body language & attitudes. https://t.co/eOKA0zvuX3
We are working on those things as well.
A4: I try to talk to Ps about what they would observe about their S if they were in the room, lends itself more to SEL and growth
A4: Love that has a home connection embedded in its lessons.
A4: Parents often ask for book recommendations to read at home with their Ss. We give them a list of SEL-focused books.
Can’t wait to check that out - will share with folks at my school. Thx.
Please don't "blame" parents for students behaviors. What good that do?We can only have an impact at school.
also has book recommendations as part of their program.
It’s hard when there’s not a school wide plan - but if folks are seeing the need - it’s sure to come.
We are using this book this yr The Growth Mindset Coach: A Teacher's Month-by-Month Handbook https://t.co/7phSkknuSZ
A4: w/new standards & curriculum we host parent workshops & game nights 2support, do this 4counseling &conflict resolution 2
This is a great idea. https://t.co/iwEt83kOAL
A4: Parents often ask for book recommendations to read at home with their Ss. We give them a list of SEL-focused books.
A5 part b: we even have vocabulary sheets to match school language from counselor learning center and more
Sounds like my kind of program - lol :)
Last year we read “The Golden Rule”-this year it's “The Energy Bus.” The books are referred to by all staff.
Thks Sammy! We put book titles under headings like "Self-Regulation", "Kindness", "Respect", etc. for easy reference :)
our counselor has a library for us to check out from and for parents to refer to
Q5: What are tips on teaching social-emotional learning you can recommend for others in this chat to try? https://t.co/EhsDZHlD7F
was talking about self regulation two years ago! Her district is really with it!
Thanks for joining in Doug! Feel free to come back any Mond nite & share w/ your teachers!
A5: Have a discussion wit staff to see what SEL skills need to be addressed first and foremost in your school and then make a plan.
A5: the BIG takeaway I had from was how much MORE modeling Ss need. They need to see it, reflect on it and share
Well said! Love the visual too! :) (You know SWANS can be nasty-right?) lol https://t.co/TDrGwJbRyf
A4 Parents should model appropriate behavior and be mindful of their children's body language & attitudes. https://t.co/eOKA0zvuX3
Yes, modeling is often not emphasized enough when teaching skills. Model, model, model.
Start with teaching a variety of feelings words. When Ss have the vocab to describe how they feel, it's easier for them to express.
A4 be open and transparent with your own thoughts and feelings
Robyn is in Canada…and very knowledgeable. You two should connect!
I was just thinking we can bring lots of that into the classroom w/ great books! https://t.co/2qDgJ6Run0
Last year we read “The Golden Rule”-this year it's “The Energy Bus.” The books are referred to by all staff.
A5: Before I told, now I try to show. Ironic I didn't see from someone who says the same thing in writing?
A5: like w/ all things else teach have objective, time 2model, practice, discuss.we r work on self awareness thus month n my class
Hi my name is Natalie Gloade . I am an educator, subbing at a Indianbrook First Nations school in Shubenacadie LSK
A5 I remind myself all the time how LONG Ss need staged modeling for transitions. Can't send all Ss into a transition if not ready
A5: It's important to emphasize to Ss that everyone has diff emotions and that all feelings are okay and a normal part of life
Agree. Oftentimes when processing with Ss they don't have the vocab to solve an issue. Their words lock… https://t.co/9BFxZq1Qg2
This is a great suggestion. Ss need the vocab at their disposal to properly express how they feel. … https://t.co/QWYZ3bgczv
Hi all - just getting home. Will scroll back
Do you get a lot of parents to attend? https://t.co/3uB1WBFa0a
A4: w/new standards & curriculum we host parent workshops & game nights 2support, do this 4counseling &conflict resolution 2
Hi, Natalie and welcome to . Teaching in a First Nations school must be interesting.
Glad you are here, Meg! Great tonight!
A5: Setting up a quiet corner in the classroom specifically for students to go to refocus and regain calm may be effective
Hi, meg. Glad you made it. Late day for you.
about 10% 60 families. offer free snacks or game night w/ it. have small presentations b4movie night/ spaghetti dinner
Sometimes we try to take short cuts with less modeling but result worth the time needed to do it right. https://t.co/HtbJLJS9TR
A5: the BIG takeaway I had from was how much MORE modeling Ss need. They need to see it, reflect on it and share
I do feeling words the 1st 2 weeks with read alouds
Great tip. Thanks. https://t.co/wu96CWlp1T
Start with teaching a variety of feelings words. When Ss have the vocab to describe how they feel, it's easier for them to express.
A6: I think the Ss are kinder. We start the yr with 5th-K buddies. That ended K Ss getting picked on. They were someone's buddy
we also do all day family support from invested partners/ invite families for hour during school 2work twice/trimester
A6: After completing our first this year, loved hearing Ss talking about being courageous like Apollo was in the book.
Q6: Hearing kinders using terms like "self-regulation" & "calming strategies" has been incredible! Ss are capable of so much!
This sounds great! https://t.co/FvQZ6btcR1
A6: After completing our first this year, loved hearing Ss talking about being courageous like Apollo was in the book.
A6: My Ss love that they can email the characters and get a response from them.
A6: better/quicker peer solutions, more honest responses to conflict, less conflict and frustration, greater expression/motivation
I just got the “show not tell” reference….just talking about that today in writing. lol
A6 b: working with 3 families wit severe emotional/attention SS, paralleling home/school = more work/engagement less shutting down
A6: Teaching Ss bout gratitude has had an incredibly positive impact. They learned to say thankyou to each other and show kindness
A6 logical consequences help Ss navigate a world where Ss do have much control over their learning. Connect choices to outcomes
Can you explain how works?
I also have kids “take a lap.” Trusted students can walk the square halls of the school, wash their face and get a drink.
I think it’s awesome you take the time to get the parents involved and make them feel valued!
I made manila envelopes with "return to T (name)" for a colleague. S delivers for a motor break. Put safe… https://t.co/RnNh6XEDlt
I also have kids “take a lap.” Trusted students can walk the square halls of the school, wash their face and get a drink.
We have a Ss deliver an “empty” envelop to another Ts. That Ts knows Ss is just being given a calm-down break.
A6 when we connect learning to the "real world" e.g.math we not only talk about how math is used but also how adults work in groups
Would be great to connect your Ss with mine. What age level are you working with?
we call this the "red tool box" no such thing is code for send to teachers to take break
and they have to know taking a break/ resetting isn't a punishment
A6 As a former engineer, not much gets done by solo scientists, it's all group work. can make or break a lab or company.
That sounds great - I’ll check out the website! It would be nice to follow a scope & sequence
Studies are showing that companies are saying the Ss need more training in “working as part of a team”. Important!
A7: Yes, and I’m using it with my 4th graders this year after meeting at . Ss are loving it!
We all need the opportunity to “reset” once in a while - even as adults! https://t.co/anZlBda6ZS
and they have to know taking a break/ resetting isn't a punishment
You are ET zone correct? I have 4th graders and best times are 9-11 or 12-2 CT.
A7: I have not heard of it before tonight. Looking forward to checking out the video you shared & website.
- Sometimes I have students deliver a ream of copy paper - the heaviness can help as well for sensory break
Very clever. Thanks for sharing.
That’s a great strategy. Thanks for sharing.
A8: I think using a program that has a clear scope & sequence takes the guess work out of the teaching part.
we do a program called Peace Works w/ local Network of Victims Assistance
A8 Like technology, things that are are integrated with curriculum and standards have more impact. Sounds like has this.
A8: skills are so important in today’s classrooms and makes it easy to teach the skills through their site.
