Good evening! Welcome to #pln365 where we will be talking about increasing student agency. Please introduce yourself & share your plans for February break
Hello all! Jill, Elementary Instructional Coach from MA. Hoping to get in few good days of skiing (all 3 of mine are finally skiing by themselves!) and LOTS of time in my pajamas, drinking coffee, & catching up on work! ⛷️☕️💻 #pln365
Q1 Provide examples if you can of ways to shift the focus from teachers to students, where teachers provide direction rather than direct instruction #pln365
A1: It’s about letting go. When teachers concentrate on facilitating and guiding students to discover and research topics they enjoy, great things happen #pln365
A1: Shifting to providing vs directing instruction can be greatly aided through technology integration. This is different than technology use. Trust and relationships are the foundation to any student centered classroom.
#pln365
A1: allow the students to direct the path of the lesson...they can co-teach! Let them think aloud and use their knowledge to help you plan future direction. The gold is in their thoughts and ideas! #pln365
A1: By knowing what pulls kids in, and by keeping track of how much we talk, versus how much they talk! (They should talk more, we should listen more) #pln365#disruptingedu
Q1 Provide examples if you can of ways to shift the focus from teachers to students, where teachers provide direction rather than direct instruction #pln365
A1: Provide students with a framework to lead instruction/present content to their peers. Have Ss determine the components of an effective presentation and design the rubric from which you will assess them. #pln365
A1: Heavy pre-planning allows teachers the freedom to facilitate a lesson. Introduce lesson for a few minutes, then let students work with partners and then independently. Scaffold. #pln365
Q1 Provide examples if you can of ways to shift the focus from teachers to students, where teachers provide direction rather than direct instruction #pln365
A1 We need to intentionally plan time for allowing students to think about the topic and allow them to discover questions to explore. Allow them the chance to discover what's most important to them. Then you can do jigsaw activity #pln365
A1: It’s about letting go. When teachers concentrate on facilitating and guiding students to discover and research topics they enjoy, great things happen #pln365
It’s so much fun to see what the students come up with. Love that the students are coming up with solutions to their own questions and exploring their passions! #pln365
A1 I think QUESTIONS are a big factor in the shift. If we can get students to wonder about concepts, then they can find a direction they want to go in...& we can help to provide resources, support to help them along their way. #pln365

Some students are waiting for us to teach them something that will save their life, not something that will save their grade. #EdChat#tlap#pln365#ILAchat#KidsDeserveIt
A2: This is often the argument for NOT allowing Ss agency, but we are teachers...so we must teach organizational structure of Ss centered class, model, redirect & reteach as needed. #pln365
A2: Students can promote Ss coice and choice and maintain control through building a culture that supports it founded in trust. Ss can be involved in rule creation and all parts of lessons.
#pln365
A2: Establishing norms is vital. When kids know their role, they will live it. They will require different levels of support for sure. The expectation of why they are here with us cannot he assumed. #pln365
A2: until Students are used to these tasks, help them out by giving them some question stems to drive discourse and inquiry. Teachers must also model these expectations. Set up some class norms and let the kids drive their passions! #pln365
A2 #pln365 Teachers can promote S agency while maintaining control by establishing norms and providing a safe space. Using sentence and question stems to initiate productive discourse and metacognition.
Control is maintained when the students know you want to allow them to grow, have choice, voice, and explore in a safe environment. Never fails! #pln365
A1. Has anyone mentioned UDL? Universal Design for Learning when Ss are given options for learning based on a menu. Usually called a 3 course food menu of appetizer, entree and dessert. #pln365
A2 Discussions w/Ss to set up goals, guidelines, work on those relationships and develop a classroom community where Ss have important roles and work together to make progress, modeling is key #pln365
A2: create expectations together rather than telling them the rules. Let the Ss decide how they want their learning space to operate. Setting high expectations gives Ss the chance to rise to the occasion. #pln365
A2: Establishing norms is vital. When kids know their role, they will live it. They will require different levels of support for sure. The expectation of why they are here with us cannot he assumed. #pln365
A2: autonomy is critically important to agency and a T has to get out of his/her comfort zone from a classroom management perspective. Active learning can be loud, messy...and fantastic #pln365
Technology and engineering can be applied in all subjects. You’re hook can be an expedition, something from @NewseumED, etc then let the students recreate that scenario. #pln365
A2. Ts can post learning objective(s) and see how Ss would prefer to learn the concepts. Then set up many different centers allowing Ss to choose which activity they would prefer to display their level of mastery towards the expectations. #pln365

A2. Control...? Do we mean how can teachers manage the classroom and promote voice and choice? If so, it’s all in the design: structure, strategies, consistency. Teachers have to be architects of learning experiences! #pln365
A1: Shifting to providing vs directing instruction can be greatly aided through technology integration. This is different than technology use. Trust and relationships are the foundation to any student centered classroom.
#pln365
A2 Start small- model the behavior/skill you desire- have meaningful reflection or assessment ready at appropriate intervals - and be ready and embrace messy. #pln365
A2 Setting up clear, consistent routines & clear, HIGH expectations at beg of year is critical. Also letting them know that it is something they have to work & show they're ready-if they can't follow the expectations, they are "not ready" to for so much choice & control. #pln365
A3: Activities that help Ss invested in their own learn transfer ownership to them. They have voice and choice. They share their process as well as their end product collaborating throughout.
#pln365
A3 even small steps are important, PBL is a big step that some Ts are not ready for. Giving students choices- even if they are limited is a great first step toward engagement & agency #pln365
A2 Discussions w/Ss to set up goals, guidelines, work on those relationships and develop a classroom community where Ss have important roles and work together to make progress, modeling is key #pln365
A2: It's important to model what student choice looks like for students. Students should feel like they are taking ownership of their learning. #pln365
A2: Leadership is setting the stage for others to succeed. Teacher planning and preparation is a key element for building the support structure for students to have the confidence to lead themselves. #pln365
A3: Performance, project, and problem based learning. Differentiation, center or station based learning, personalized learning and more all support student investment in learning.
#pln365
A2. Speaking of modeling, educators can demonstrate voice and choice in their advocacy of the profession. The time is NOW! That’s part of my new book...#pln365
A3: RELEVANCE is ESSENTIAL! activities are just a waste of space and time unless the students are vested and see how they tie to the real-world and how they connect learning across disciplines #pln365
We have this complex of needing to manage situations rather than motivate and empower others to excel within the flexible parameters of excellence. #pln365
A4 creating low stakes or no stakes opportunities for learning when students can take risks and make mistakes without consequence, learning multiplies #pln365
A3: Students need both relevancy and opportunities to see themselves as active contributors to community-based or global problems. Purpose is power — students believe this. When will we? #pln365
A3 ones in which Ss have #stuchoice in learning, #pbl#geniushour and providing opps for Ss to work w/peers more actively, student driven, moving around, and even taking some risks, #pln365
Teaching through a blended model has really enhanced student efficacy. When student are responsible for controlling the pace at which they learn, they quickly become integrated in the learning process #pln365
A2 Define, from the first day of class, what a controlled classroom is--so students will know when things have gone too far. Define each section of the classroom continuum--
quiet..... controlled...chaotic
--and then you'll have partners in keeping control.
#pln365
A3: Anything that provides choice for students is engaging. Letting them pick a book, writing topic, science project. All of these help students to be more interested #pln365
I think it’s because we are stuck in a cycle of compliance. Mostly because we’ve been detached from the mandates placed upon us. It’s time to #fightback#pln365
A3 Gold Standard PBL involves solving a real life problems. I think the key to keeping students interested & empowering them is to make learning relevant. Show how the learning is connected to the real world. #pln365
A3. When Ss are aware of their expectations, they are more willing to take ownership. For example, Ss should know all of the expected objectives to achieve (SLOs). Then they can know the purpose and expectations. #pln365
My new book, Burned Out, Beaten Up, & Fighting Back: A Call to Action for America's Public Educators is now available for pre-order on Kindle: https://t.co/MQQeH7Xrfz. You can learn more about the book here: #leadershipwithlatoya
A3: Projects that involve technology. I notice that students enjoy collaborating with their peers and being creative. It's really great seeing students put forth the extra effort, mastering the content, and displaying their creativity. #pln365
A3: Make it directly relevant to students using your knowledge of their personalities and your relationship with them. Let them feel confidence in small successes to build their interest in continuing. Then involve them in reflection and thinking about their own thinking. #pln365

A3. Providing Ss with clear standards based rubrics after laying out the objectives. Then they can see the expectations progressing from lower order to higher order. Then allow them to self and peer assess. #pln365
My PBL page https://t.co/Z1RTej3WkY "Project based learning is amazing.
Have students find a problem in their community
and then have them go fix it." #pln365

A3 #disruptingedu#pln365 I have found when Ss can see they are making progress, they own their learning more. I also think they have to have a direct connection to what they are learning. #oneword2018 & creating their own #TEDtalks made huge impacts on my students
#pln365. A1: Ask a good question. BUT.....process is NOT always intuitive. Ts have to know when to provide instruction and when to stay out. We're there for a reason....a no problem can be given unlimited time (days...weeks...).
Q1 Provide examples if you can of ways to shift the focus from teachers to students, where teachers provide direction rather than direct instruction #pln365
A3 I think activities where Ss can make choices, have some control over their learning path. Also, activities where Ss have set goals for themselves & are motivated to meet them/get there. #pln365
A3 Start with the very simple but unusual question: "What would YOU like to learn?" and go from there. #pln365@TikvahWiener says this is the magic question. And she's right!
A3 allowing Ss to put their learning to the test by showing that they synthesized skills and comprehend content. Feedback and rubrics show Ss if they are on the right path #pln365
