Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.

Good Morning #leadLAP! Niki, MS AP, from Seattle.

A1: As a librarian, I model this by bringing in all new types of reading materials for my Ss. I encourage my Ss to branch out for new content and not necessarily up in reading level. I also try to be well versed in what they like to have great convos with them. #leadlap
A1: I always have a book that I am reading on my desk. Students will ask about it usually. I believe if we are a great model for reading, they will follow. #leadlap
A1. We spend time w/ Discipline Literacy so staff see what strategies within their content they can model so in Science class kids “read, write and think “ like a scientist”. #LeadLAP
A1: I share what I’m reading on social media because I love to connect with others in this manner. I love to go into classrooms as a guest reader, teach a reading lesson, and this year did a book club with a small group of kids. Next goal: bedtime story on FB Live! #leadlap
Ask people what they are ear or eye reading that I should read.. leave books out for others to pick up or Ask about… Encourage book clubs .. read aloud to kids... use book quotes to get people talking .. #LeadLAP

Students reading in the hall, in classrooms and especially in our library “pit”. Flexible seating makes it comfortable to enjoy. Teachers and admins reading aloud is always fun. #Leadlap
A3: Funny @BrittneyIdland just sent me her @Flipgrid of students reading out loud. They love reading together, love reading aloud, and they especially love watching themselves read #LeadLAP
This is my favourite! I love the structure of @thedailycafe as it affords me the privilege of meeting with Ss & their self-selected text on the regular. Additionally, I love stopping & talking to kids in the hallway or library to find out what they are reading! #leadlap#leadlit
A3- Love our March Madness Reading Tournament of Books we started last year- Students wanted to read all of the books in the tournament so they could vote for their faves! #leadlit#leadlap Excited to hear other ideas

A3: We have a section on our news broadcast where a child does a book talk and rates the book, then shares where it can be found in our library. #leadLAP
A3. Great question - we are working on this but so far we try to engage them with a “hook” like a video, blog, that stimulates their interest that leads into a book about the topic or theme. #LeadLAP
A3: I love to involve my Ss in helping me find new books for the classroom from @ScholasticClub I am also a fan of friends reading together so I promote partner and small group reading. #leadLAP#leadlit
A3: We start our days with a “tell me about it” on anything they’d like to share with all of us. I encourage to “tell me about” a book they’d like me to read to encourage talks about it. #leadLAP#leadLIT#TXed#edleadership#EDUchat#EDUGladiators
A3 It may not be unique, but I love conferring with students, and I'm their principal! They at least appear to really enjoy having a discussion with me about their book. #LeadLAP
I want to try to read more of what our students do and have more conversations with them. Lunch and break time are great places to have conversations with students but I just don’t take advantage of it enough! #LeadLap
Thanks! We gathered the money from several different "pots" to make it happen. It took some creativity, but it was a priority for us bc so many of our kids don't necessarily have access to high quality age-appropriate & engaging books over the summer. #TMGenius#LeadLAP
A3: I ask students to use the #learnlap acronym when discussing how they are learning today. Example, how are you using "Twenty First Century Skills" today? I might even dress like a pirate when I do it! :-) #leadlap
my 3rd graders do @Flipgrid snippets of what they read during the week- they are amazing and so much more than just a book log.... some Ss are so talented with their video logs
In reply to

A3- We have monthly at home book challenges that every level of students can accomplish at home with little to no help. When students return them, they earn a free book and get to pick it from our book cart. #LeadLAP
A3: I've started book talks at our school with @Flipgrid , QR codes, and my wonderful librarian. Started with 3rd grade and just learning how to use Flipgrid, but will be putting up the QR codes soon! #LeadLIT#LeadLAP
A3) need to do this more in my role now, but during #geniushour in the classroom, Ss raced to read anything on their topic. Hungry for knowledge they were passionate about they couldn’t get enough-in fact our most effective reading conferences were during this time. #leadlap
Please do! It was so awesome seeing the kids' so excited over their new books! And knowing that each of our Ss would have books in their home over the summer was great. #LeadLAP
Awesome idea Barb! I am going to steal this idea. I usually ask what they did the night before etc, but don't always ask about what book they read the night before. I will have to throw this in my morning routine with my students. #leadlap
A3: our FBLA is currently using @WonderWorkshop robots Cue & Zest during #readingbuddies to tell stories to our younger Ss at the elementary level #LeadLAP
A3: We have all read the same book #OneSchoolOneBook (or vics versa). We hold a literacy night event each year. Last year we did a March Madness Sweet 16 challenge for read aloud books where each class voted over four weeks until we picked our top book for our school. #leadLAP
#leadLit#leadlap. We’ve started a tradition of giving books to kids at the first back to school activities in August. We also partnered with our local rotary to give a book to every kid at our school. I challenged our principal to do fb live read alouds. @Greg_Moffitt
A3. Not unique, but has been fruitful my whole career. If a student checks out a book I don’t know, I ask them to tell me about it when they return book . I have connected with much YA I would miss that way. #leadlap
A3: I've told students if they don't know what to do, or they are waiting for everyone to get ready, read a book- every minute matters from Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov. I rewardstudents who do this with + tickets #leadLAP
Nice! If they're on the wall, it's great until they paint over them. :) Had that happen. My school lets us decorate ceiling tiles, and those last longer. :) Students can look up and see their work. #LeadLAP
A3) A unique way I work at engaging Ss in reading is sometimes starting with poetry that relates to the author or the story. Build inquiry. For Halloween we looked at The Raven and then read The Tell Tale Heart! What fun!! #LeadLAP
A2: Soon they will see our new book wall that will be painted by some of the high school art students in our district. Each class voted on a book to feature & they will be painted on a wall in our lobby. #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
A3: While being available in person at Barnes and Noble, I also go LIVE on our class Instagram to help students who cannot come to the shop find a book they enjoy for their Independent Reading projects. They were so sweet to extend my discount to my kiddos! #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
A3: Visit classrooms during independent reading time and engage in discussions with students about what they are reading, read to classes & generally share passion for reading, give book talks in classrooms, have Ts & Ss give book talks #LeadLAP
A3-Since I work w/many struggling readers in HS & my husband teaches 5th grade, I was thinking of creating a #FlipgridFever shared reading experience #leadlap

BINGO for Books in the spring!
#leadlit#LeadLAP
A3: Each Ss chose a fictional character who went missing. Ss complete 11 creative literacy projects which give clues to lead others to discover who their Missing Person is. They love hiding in the room, competing their work, and placing in their Secret ID files! #leadlap
A4. We have reading stations. One is when Ss get to choose their own book. Another is #hyperdocs and a third is literature circles. I get to read real books with real kids. #LeadLAP
A4: The @Scholastic book fair is always one of the biggest events for excitement around reading. We have two each year and also Family Lit nights support this #LeadLAP
We have our officers read the story to the boys and store the recordings. Then it changes into the boys voices and code light and actions as the story is told to the students #Leadlap
A3: Our superstar librarian set up a Book Madness bracket last March. Students were able to vote on their favorite books to advance in a tournament style format similar to college basketball. #Leadlap
Love when admin come to read with kids!! We do a reading extravaganza day and invite parents, school officials, other Ts to read to us all day #leadlap
A3) Again something we are working on as a school. One thing I really want to do is get into classrooms to read to students, from PK-8th grade. Building a love of reading has to start at the top, and I need to work to model that love. #LeadLAP
Oh yes the book board love this idea. My old 5th grade teacher had this idea years ago. Many people thought it was too much. Now who is laughing #Leadlap
A4. When we challenged the MS student councils at two buildings to collect the most books for our elem. school their interest in helping around the concept of literacy soared HIGH! We had pick-up truck loads!! #LeadLAP
That was our chosen book last year! My son loved it. This year it is Hank Zipzer: The World's Greatest Underchiever - Niagraga Falls, or Does It? #leadLAP
Trying to catch up with #LeadLap Qs after a great #coffeeedu with my #chaedu#pln...#toomanyhashtags? 😁 Pre-K teacher so we're learning to love books by treating them like treasures. I make a big deal out of our time that we "get" to hear a story. Mixing it up with video. #tlap
Ss read self-selected material in Spanish, we do book reviews on post-it notes, and use @Flipgrid to have discussions in Spanish about books. #LeadLAP#LeadLit

A4: I really want to organize a storywalk for my students in the spring. We have a walking trail through our woods on campus, so I think it would be so much fun! Physical activity AND reading! Our district did one a few yrs ago and had great turnout from community. #LeadLAP
My only homework is literacy homework. Students must read/ write 100 minutes a week. I write back to them. I recently wrote, "The reason I love teaching is I love reading and learning from students what they learn from reading." #LEADLAP
Q4: Movie release parties when movie adaptations are on the big screen, school-wide votes for their favorite books, book displays with student and staff recommendations, and asking students for their thoughts on book when the bring them back to the library. #leadlap#leadlit

I have LOVED our @readtothem One School/One Book project that I learned about from @MrWawczak
I can't wait to see if we can spread it across our district next year! #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
A4: Haven't done this yet but had an idea (since reading #LeadLIT ) to have a reading night family event at school to bring parents in. What if we host it in the library, have areas where Ts & HS Ss read to any littles who come, have book tastings for Ts, etc. #LeadLAP
A4) Book fair is big. Outside of that we are struggling to gets more engaged with reading. Working on more ideas, and excited to get a lot of great ideas from this awesome group! #LeadLAP
A4 - Using picture books for STEAM activities. The engagement during read aloud is awesome! I can model reading strategies and the community building & problem solving that ensues is awesome! Ss become much more passionate about reading & see books in a new light! #leadlap (1/2)

A4: I meet weekly before school with a group of reluctant readers and we just read books and talk about books. Here is a picture of our Tournament of books that we did last year. We put free books throughout our building. #LeadLAP
A5- Our Books & Beyond is a huge success each year with almost all of our PK-3 students earning a medal for reading so many books during those months. We're always asking Ss & Ps what are YOU reading? #leadlit#leadLAP
A4 Our March Madness event was unbelievable last year- the energy was insane for 2nd and 3rd graders when the winning book was announced- can’t wait to see more ideas at the middle school level #leadlap
Yep! Inserted image of book cover and used dropdown menu option & duplicated questions changing cover & book number. Formatted response sheet to show correct and incorrect answers. #LeadLAP
A5 this is a hard one for. I finally read @donalynbooks and transferred reading time into my class time. So I guess I am showing the families how important reading is that I doing it in class. #leadlap
As an admin each year we are intentional about budgeting money for staff to buy books for classroom libraries. Students typically give feedback on choices through book orders. This has made a huge impact on finding meaningful books! #leadLAP
A4:In my class Ss are engaged & challenged in their work w/ Missing Persons. I will send the link next! My entire school is engaged in a One School-One Book initiative.Every Ss, same book to take home, nightly chps, ?'s to answer, morning announcement ? contest w/prizes! #leadlap
I would say it all day long.
Books in the hands of students.
Everyone, the custodian, the secretary, the nurse, parents, visitors knew how important this was. #LeadLAP
Sometimes we have to feel the alienation ourselves to realize that, as much as we feel like we are trying, others may not be feeling the love. The good thing is, it’s never too late to improve our efforts. 😍 #notaboutus#LEADlap#WeTeachUp#masterychat@gcouros@bjohnsonEDU
We think we accept others; we think we embrace others; we think we love others. But it doesn’t really matter if they don’t feel it. Our good intentions are not enough… cause it’s not about us.
A4: I'd like to start FB live read-alouds. Right now, I enjoy the small, relationship-building moments I have w Ss when I ask them about what they're reading. REALLY love the #HarryPotter fans who I can geek out with.🤓 #LeadLAP
Q5: In addition to promoting reading of hard copy books, we've had success with students and families reading at home with ebooks such as MyOn ebooks, and Tumblebooks. #LeadLit#LeadLAP
A5: It’s the conversations with parents that are so important. I encourage reading stories to their children in their home language and letting children read anything of interest -graphic novels, comic books, etc. #leadLAP
As an admin each year we are intentional about budgeting money for staff to buy books for classroom libraries. Students typically give feedback on choices through book orders. This has made a huge impact on finding meaningful books! #leadLAP
I have a token economy system where students earn "Explorer Excellence" slips. I've told them I will give them 10 cents for each slip to use at the book fair next week. Let's see how much I can spend!#LEADLAP
A5: We don't do as well here as I'd like, but if we start using our school social media (I'm in charge of it) to promote books & reading at home, & maybe throw in a @Flipgrid booktalk, that will help. Our Ss have to read, but I want them to LOVE to read. #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
A5: A few years back I organized a family book club with 4/5 grade. I sent home questions about the novel each week that parents could use to start discussions & then we met at the end to have a whole group discussion of the themes of the book. #LeadLAP
A4- We did a Pirate book together for our primary. They want on a scavenger hunt created by @lhelton15 and ended with a poem explaining that the real treasure is in reading. Each S received a pirate book and gold fish or course. We will do it later with older kids. #LeadLAP
AC Lab is researching spooky stories from Missouri, then using @StoryboardThat to create a shortened version. Who knew Missouri was so scary! #fmsteach
A5: I have high expectations with my Ss when it comes to reading. I encourage reading at home constantly. I model how my son and I read. I show them how to download the free reading app for the library and my classroom library is theirs to use always. #LeadLAP
Q3: We have been learning about just right books in Gr3/4 this week. I set up a min lesson and tried on a Barbie shirt, a kids shirt and then my own. Helped them visualize getting "the right fit". All week they asked for my recommendations and tried something new. #LeadLAP
A5- As a high school teacher I would love to hear how people are doing this at this level. Always a struggle and not too proud to ask for help! #leadlit#LeadLAP

A5 At pick up time I share with families what their child said about a book, tell them how much they liked a character or story. If a student wants to take a book home I let them and tell the family how happy I am that the child wants to "read" #leadlap#preklikeapirate

A4: I am going to do a book group with some of my 4th graders on How to Eat Fried Worms! We also do a school wide reading of a book at the end of the year to build excitement for the summer. Last year was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. #LeadLAP
They are two separate texts written by the same authors that compliment one another. Daily 5 provides the structure to move students through literacy skills. CAFE provides strategies that promote reading skills in Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding Vocabulary.

A5: We've tried to be intentional about giving our families the resources to know how to book talk with their child & also keep the message loud & clear about how important reading is. Our fab #PTA has also partnered with some family book studies. #LeadLAP
Q4: We have had a reading winter wonderland and spring into the 7 habits community events. Students and staff share books aloud. Students also make movies, create posters or create google slide presentations to describe their books. We also do book drawings. #Leadlap
I work in a high school as well. Some teachers make posters outside their classrooms of all the books that teachers and students are reading or just post on a bulletin board your current book etc. check out @mjjohnson1216 she just posted an idea #leadlap

A6: birthdays, holidays; I use ANY excuse to gift books. Many times, I could go to half price books or small bookstores & buy books for less than a dollar w/ little to no wear. At the end of the year, I encourage Ss to do a book swap with each other. #leadLAP#leadLIT#TXed
A6. There are SO many books to gift a staff member! #BookCampPD's website has a listing and tremendous resources from all of the authors who have joined our chat. Please check it out. https://t.co/9CFlAawfNY#LeadLAP
A6: I buy my admin #LeadLAP & #sldunktank for starters. Christmas, birthdays, just because and welcome new person are great times, but ANYTIME is a great time to give a book. #InnovatorsMindset is the next one I give. #LeadLIT
Q4: My Ss love❤❤ doing #BookSnaps and I want to plan a book tasting this year too. We also love @Flipgrid. I'm working on ways to connect literacy to our #makerspace#LeadLAP
Yes! Sometimes I have to change up my read-aloud to a digital version or youtube video to keep them engaged. I turn the page with the audio so they can see the connection to our book that I'm holding. #leadlap#preklikeapirate
Since we're talking about books, have you listened to @cultofpedagogy yet? I can't wait! I can't do that when my family is around, they won't leave me alone long enough. ;) #leadlaphttps://t.co/3qn1w7OBIm
A5 - Creating learners who love to read at school transfers to home behaviours. Creating value and love of reading flows over. Most Ps want their kids to read, but at the beginning of the year I often send the following home with my welcome newsletter. #leadlap#leadlit
A5 online chats after school about books we were reading were game changing. Any S who could attend in real time did and they couldn’t wait to share their thinking because we were an interactive audience for each other. Looking to bring this back soon! #leadlap
A6: I love the birthday book idea!
We give every student a book to read as a grade level. This year, 6th is doing The Great Trouble & 7th is reading Prisoner B-3087. We started this last year and will add 8th into the mix next year. #LeadLAP#LeadLIT

A6) We are starting a birthday books program for our Ss and soon our Ts too. Super excited about this. Kids can come to the office on their birthday to pick out a book, and Ts will have access to professional development books they can pick as well. #LeadLAP
A6. How about checking out the responses from 288 educators when they selected the top ten books for #BookCampPD's Fall Focus? https://t.co/j8KekPlnVs Perhaps one of them will be the perfect book to share? #LeadLAP
A6: My dear buddy (met on Twitter) @hayes_melisa sent my class 365 Days of Wonder. We start our day w/ the daily quote & talk about what it means to each Ss individually. Great book gift...her class gift is in the mail next week!!! #LeadLAP
Q5: we engage families with students writing a weekly letter home, and ask them to write back, with lines to do so. Reading to your child and echo reading counts for their literacy minutes. Remind parents kids are never too old for a bedtime story. #leadLAP
Q5: This is sometimes the most difficult. Helping students pick books they love at school crosses over into home. Parents will say they love reading this year! #LeadLAP
A6: We balance both T-choice books for personalized PD & books we read together. We value both individualized learning and being a group of learners together. We also set aside funds to purchase the books, as well. Shared leadership throughout. #walkthetalk#LeadLAP
A4 & A5: This summer we placed a yarn bomb bike in a secret location (public library) then encouraged students to snap a pic once they found it. It was a win-win, connecting with families over the break and guiding students into the library. #leadlit#Leadlap#teamSterling
Q6: Gifting students books before breaks; winter, spring, and summer would be fantastic to encourage them to continue to read while on break! #leadlit#leadlap

A6 Our counselor read "Jungle Bullies" to my kidlets yesterday. That would be a great one to gift them for ongoing #sel. I'd love to give staff a copy of #EDUProtocols and #tlap! Let's do this, and have FUN along the way. Of course #leadlap for admins! 😊

A6 - The text I would gift is ‘All Are Welcome’ to Ts & Ss because you can have so many great conversations about belonging, equity & inclusion. Everyone can see themselves reflected in this text, and I am all about promoting community and a safe space for all. #leadlit#leadlap
Personal #LeadLIT question: I have observed that providing time and space for reading is the most difficult part of reading. What are some ways that you make time for yourself as an educator and what are ways you help make time for students to read during the school day?#LeadLAP
A5: I'm not sure of the success we've had with engaging kids and families? Most Ts have a book log for ss to record what they are reading. I question the honesty of the replies from home at times. Would love to know how others monitor this/engage families at home! #leadlap
I just adore books! You might wonder if the schools I have worked in, with fantastic teams of educators, had increases in student achievement from our daily focus on reading? You bet - achievement skyrocketed and prepared them for their future. #LeadLAP
A7: Where the Red Fern Grows is amazing to read aloud. My mom read it to us when she taught 7th grade. She made kids cry for years. Then when I teach novels, @dougemints (had Mom as a T) said I had to have her read that aloud to my class (his daughter). I did. #LeadLAP#LeadLIT

A7: The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors was by far my favorite virtual read aloud this summer! So much action and fun with the voices! #LeadLAPhttps://t.co/cKhRysSNgH…
We were never interested in adding yet one more thing to the plates of families who were struggling to get through a day. We simply filled their homes with as many books as we could move heaven and earth to find for them. #LeadLAP
Perfect Fall morning to sit down and write! Have so many stories to share about my #IM549c adventures in my new role! Blog posts coming soon! Stay tuned!

A6- We have worked to bring diversity to books for students and staff. We also encourage our staff to make sure they are doing the same when choosing books for their classrooms. We also provide staff with different types topics. Staff get books for their birthday. #leadLAP
A6: Book to Gift:
Teach Like a Champion 2.0 by @Doug_Lemov for new/struggling teachers.
Mathematical Mindsets by @joboaler for math teachers.
Move Your Bus by @ronclarkacademy
for principals.
Multipliers book by @LizWiseman for Superintendents.

Great way to start of the day, #LeadLAP crew! Mind is full of ideas! Thanks for a fab job of moderating, @mandyeellis ! Have a great rest of your weekend, everyone!
A5: Parents love seeing their child’s picture shared on our school Instagram. They will send me a pic of their child reading at home and I give them a shoutout. #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
Thank you all so much for joining #LeadLAP this morning. And a huge shout out to our PIRATE leader @mandyeellis for hosting today! Have an awesome weekend.
A7 - I love to read picture books aloud, particularly those that promote critical thinking, acceptance and creativity. The opportunity to take on character or voice, to get lost in the story, character or events feed me when selecting a text for read aloud. #leadlap#leadlit
A7: I LOVE read alouds with all Ss of all ages (used to read books to my HS math Ss - "Math Curse" is fun!) and adults. I recently read "What Do You Do with a Chance?" at a staff PD. #LeadLAP
@mandyeellis your book is simply over the moon! I hope everyone will grab a copy and share it far and wide. Thank you for moderating the chat this morning!! #LeadLAP
A7: Too many!! Love Watson's go to Birmingham, Kizzy Ann Stamps, Slacker... Last year we read the littlest bigfoot and kids LOVED it. I try to switch it up and find new books all the time. #LeadLAP
A7: Oh my goodness!!! There is no way I could share them all! I love The Book with No Pictures by BJ Novak and No Talking by Andrew Clements! Right now we’re reading Harry Potter as our read aloud! #LeadLAP
A7 I LOVE to read books that have Spanish in them because I can speak some Spanish (half Colombian). The kids get a kick out of it since I acquired a Southern accent as a child. "Skippy John Jones" is the best. So fun. #LeadLAP#preklikeapirate
