Today's #ETCoaches chat is about Teaching Media Literacy in the era of Fake News. Introduce yourself - where are you from and what do you do?
I'm Allison from Lansing, MI and I'm the Tech Director at St. Gerard School.
Today's #ETCoaches chat is all about Teaching Media Literacy in the era of Fake News. We'll use Q1 and A1 format. Make sure to use our hashtag in your answer. First question coming up in just a few!
Q1: Media literacy skills help students to access, evaluate and analyze information. How do you teach these skills in an era of "information overload"? #ETCoaches
A1: I try to focus on one thing, like looking at news literacy or evaluating an online source. We discuss ways to "trust but verify" and how to investigate sources. #ETcoaches
A1. Teaching students how to find the source of info and strategies to figure out credibility. Does take time, but so important. Modeling helps. #ETCoaches
For sure. It does take time but it is crucial for students to know HOW to evaluate in order for them to be thoughtful critics of information. #ETCoaches
#ETCoaches A1. I think it is valuable to teach these skills in their own lessons and also as part of cross-curricular activities. It does take time, but the investment will more than pay off.
The benefits of being a connected educator start in the building of relationships across time and (digital) spaces that push you to articulate your why’s, challenge your thinking, and grow as a practioner. #edchat#ETCoaches#edtechchathttps://t.co/1vlwQHpDMS
A1: This is the dilemma! There are some great resources out there from places like @CommonSenseEd, but my fellow Intergrator, @amooseIT, and I did a lot of ground work in curating resources for our Ts to use : https://t.co/506mlObHmt#ETCoaches
Q1: Media literacy skills help students to access, evaluate and analyze information. How do you teach these skills in an era of "information overload"? #ETCoaches
A2. Excellent question. Perhaps starting with exploring bias under the lens of commercialism as a first step. Does the site want to make money? Collect info for later use? etc #ETCoaches
A2: Teaching about bias is such a tricky subject. Hard to be unbiased. I think the news media suffers from this too and the idea of "both sides" deserving equal time/coverage #ETCoaches
Q3: In the digital age, it's very easy to avoid information we don't like. How can we work to become "un-siloed" and escape the echo chamber? #ETCoaches
A2: I think you are kidding yourself if you think you (or anyone) can ever completely remove their bias, BUT you can talk openly about identifying that bias and helping Ss try to focus on #facts & how those can be used to form #opinions for multiple sides of an issue. #ETCoaches
A3. #ETCoaches I think we need to be cognizant that we are setting the example of being non-bias with our own actions and lessons. How can we expect our students to learn the importance of fair or fake news, if we aren't demonstrating good media literacy skills ourselves?
I agree - - cross-curricular lessons with current events (especially during an election season) is a great way to start that conversation :) #ETCoaches
A3: I think it is important to stay informed and focus on what is really important. The question is how to stop the fake news avalanche! #ETCoaches@AllisonTEDU
Great strategy! Comparing and contrasting the tones in various articles on the same topic is helpful. I wonder if evaluating Sunday morning talk shows on different networks would be an interesting exercise, too. #ETCoaches
A3: This goes back to identifying bias & not pretend it's not there. Pulling #facts from a variety of sources is a great way to better understand dif viewpoints (even those you disagree with) & could begin as a attempt to debate but result in getting the whole picture! #ETCoaches
Q3: In the digital age, it's very easy to avoid information we don't like. How can we work to become "un-siloed" and escape the echo chamber? #ETCoaches
NewseumEd has many FREE lessons that include a wide variety of topics and are ready to go. I know you need to be a member, but that is free. #ETCoaches
Q5: Trust in the news media has declined by 13% since 2010. How does this decline in trust play into our responsibility to teach Ss to question and evaluate information from sources? What's the balance between questioning and accepting? #ETCoaches
A4: Not sure if there's a better resource out there than Factitious: https://t.co/DhA89gqu6b to give Ss a quick and easy way of looking at recent articles and practice identifying real or fake. The constant updates seem to make it much more credible in the eyes of Ss! #ETCoaches
A4. I have not yet done this (no students of my own), but students could write articles about sports events from the perspective of the winner/loser? #ETCoaches
A5: Does our responsibility go up 13%?🤨 It's a fine balance between questioning & accepting, but Ss need to trust themselves and Ts need to help provide the tools for a S to effectively & efficiently look into something and get the #facts to form their own #opinions! #ETCoaches
Q5: Trust in the news media has declined by 13% since 2010. How does this decline in trust play into our responsibility to teach Ss to question and evaluate information from sources? What's the balance between questioning and accepting? #ETCoaches
Yes, exactly 13% :) I agree. I saw a thread the other day about how we're teaching Ss to question everything and so therefore students will never know what is truth... (I don't agree, just thought it was interesting) #ETCoaches
Last question - Q6: What strategies or resources do you use to introduce media literacy skills? Are they different than "regular" literacy/critical thinking skills? #ETCoaches
A6. This is my favorite curated list of resources for Media Literacy - https://t.co/H1U9YqEVTA. But, I could be a bit bias ;). I also use NewseumEdu #ETCoaches
A6: Here's a list of curated resources we put together for our MS Ts/Ss: https://t.co/tq4rNVhRpO | I don't think you're reinventing the wheel when looking at #MediaLiteracy & whether we are ready or not I feel it has become melded in with #Literacy skills overall! #ETCoaches
