A1 #ukedchat
It all about reading for pleasure. I make it very clear even from my perspective parent showround that reading for pleasure is key to lifelong learning.
A1 As a school there's a token effort but I don't think it's enough - it gets swallowed up within the rest of the curriculum etc
Individual classes obviously differ & its clear in these rooms from the texts used/displayed and children's attitudes #ukedchat
#ukedchat I'd say it needs an embedded ethos within every practitioner before they even start their initial teacher training.
There can't be too many people who get to degree level without a love.of reading regardless of context.
#UKEdChat A1 I think it's important to give the students the opportunity to read books for pleasure that can be incorporated into our lesson planning. Show that learning can be a pleasure.
I don't work in a setting any more but when I did, it was about using books as provocations and incorporating books into play. And regularly reviewing whether the content of the books we had met the pleasures of the children #ukedchat
#ukedchat A few tips on motivating children to read: 1. Have pupils tell their own stories. 2. Teach phonics. 3. Make the most of repetition and rhyme. 4. Use technologies and digital resources! Spelling with Emile and Grammar with Emile can help solving this problem for sure.
#ukedchat A2 one idea I like is creating a visual motivator. An example would be to create a display in your classroom with student pictures and award stars to students who read and write a book report on the book.
A1: I've seen more in primary years than secondary. However, Ms. Reid (librarian) @RossSchoolBears is magical. EVERY student has at least one perfect book for level and interest. It creates a culture of readers! Don't underestimate the value of a good librarian. #ukedchat
A2- model it. If you love reading they’ll see your passion isn’t just for show.
Treasure it. Don’t push it to the last five minutes of the day.
Vary it. If they don’t like a book, if they haven’t found something they enjoy, change it. Show them there’s lots of options!
#UKEdChat
A2 I don't really get much chance to use books as I teach mainly KS4 & KS5 Science but I do like activities were students have to play a game based on something they've had to read #ukedchat

#UKEdChat A3: The books I have found teen students enjoy are those books that also have movie series. One way around them "cheating" is to have them do a compare/contrast research paper on differences and similarities in the book and the movie/film.
A2 - Select texts carefully in all areas of work listening to children's suggestions where practical, read with enthusiasm and passion and be the model the children require #ukedchat
By bringing a story to life - props, theatrics, role play and linking it directly to the children's real experiences. And vowing never to use books to 'pacify' children with no thought for its content or value. #UKEdChat
Oh, definitely books I loved myself as a child as children are usually so interested in their teachers. Anthony Browne books follow me everywhere!!!! #UKEdChat
A1 With evidence showing a correlation between reading for pleasure and educational outcomes reading for pleasure is a priority. The emphasis is there from sharing stories everyday and dedicating time to shared reading. #UKEdChat
#ukedchat I'm not sure (as a student) I would be able to sit in the classroom and listen to the teacher read aloud from a book and take anything away from the lesson
A2 In English and other subjects, talking about being word detectives and vocabulary choices can engage children. They love knowing where words come from esp if from a language they know well. Exploring parts of a book through drama and role play can make it come alive. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q4
Being a competent reader is critical across all subjects - How does your subject encouraging reading with pupils?
▶Please use the hashtag & A4◀
We try to make a huge effort to encourage reading for pleasure, we try to invest in books whenever possible allowing pupils to make decisions, we also make sure children are involved in class book choices. We run reading competitions and initiatives. #ukedchat q1
A3 I start the year with a book I've loved reading before. Many of the chn will go to the school library and find a book by the same author or on a similar theme. Roald Dahl books are brilliant to read aloud and the made up words intrigue my Year 3s. #UKEdChat
A3 I think funny books are a good place to start. You can’t beat roald Dahl or if they’re a bit older Harry Potter is definitely addictive. I think it often works for you to read a book to them and they often read other books by the same author. #ukedchat

I respectfully disagree. When a talented T reads aloud to Ss, they don't want to leave. They hang on every word and can't wait for the next read aloud session. [note: there's a huge difference between a teacher reading a "read aloud" book and from a textbook.]

A4 I think reading can be incorporated in any subject from maths problems and the language used (some of it challenging and not always the mathematical vocabulary) to making inferences about a piece of art and everything in between. #UKEdChat
A2 be excited to read yourself. Ask where there up to and be keen for them to tell you what happens next. Most of all when you read do voices and know when to close the book to keep them hanging on for the next time. #ukedchat
#ukedchat A4 Taking any tenuously related reading material in. Love the Horrible Science/History books. Learning about space? Here's some Red Dwarf novella. Got loads of my old Empire magazines in a tray in my lab that gets raised regularly...
#UKEdChat Q5
What role does technology play in developing a positive reading culture? How can technology be used to nurture positive reading experiences?

A2 Encouraging students to read aloud as well as the teacher. Also, considering how it will be read so that they can access meaning in the text. We give lots of time to pause and question to explore and develop interest. #UKEdChat
YES!!!! I am shocked by the number of teachers who admit to not really reading much themselves. How can you role model if you haven't got lost in a good book. #UKEdChat
I think technology has a role, but mustn’t be seen as the be all #UKEdChat A5. If children engage with digital to get them into reading, then it’s a good starting point, but other media should be encouraged as well.
I love technology much to peoples horror but one place I do not see a place for it is through reading. I refuse to use a kindle. I am a reading radical and believe books belong on real pages only...#UkEdChat

#UKEdChat A5 Technology plays a huge role in our classrooms, with most offering a 1:1 environment with all students receiving a tablet. Since there are so many apps/websites, etc available they provide many opportunities to get students reading. Be that articles or books.
Our words are powerful 💪🏽
@John_Dabell has decided on the one single word that is the most powerful in the classroom 🗣
What do you think it could be?
https://t.co/JXP6CHwlWr#UKedchat
...For me, technology plays a part after the experience of reading through consolidation, for example, if the child has read about animals, we might go and capture pictures of animals on a community walk #UKEdChat
A5: I guess my answer for Q4 answered this one. I feel technology can be used in many ways especially to encourage more reluctant readers. Also, tech offers tools to for Ss to hear, map, annotate what they are reading. #UKEdChat
Easy Peasy: Gardening With Kids by Kirsten Bradley - Make your own pots, build balcony boxes, create your own bird feeders and even get friendly with worms - daily new children's book #ukedchat#readingrockshttps://t.co/rWiBfG0xrW
A6: I was fortunate to work with an ELA T who maintained reading logs with every student. Ss recorded their thoughts about for pleasure readings weekly. T wrote back to each S, making connections to her reading and life experiences. A huge endeavour, but such an impact #UKedchat
A5 Some children may not have many physical books at home. Free e-books are available from Oxford Owl and the fact that a child can listen to someone else reading the book to them can be positive especially if a parent is unable to do so. #UKEdChat
A6 Mine used (retired) to be to have LOTS of pleasurable books in the classroom (charity shops) and set some lesson and prep times aside for the reading of them. Or pupils (ages11-14) could choose their own book - provided I OKed it; usually did.#ukedchat
#ukedchat A6 Have a library. A good one. With a properly diverse selection of books/magazines/journals etc. Tell the students WHY you love reading. We have book theme days like #WorldBookDay where we go in dressed as characters from our favourite books and do theme lessons...!
Making reading fun and as accessible as possible, providing as many reading role models as possible. Having materials easily accessible at all times. Making it a priority and the normal in school. As well as more token things like competitions and hiding reading stones. #ukedchat
Picking up a book is the start of an attachment for me, I turn the corner, I highlight, I write in it, I carry it for comfort. It becomes a best friend for a week or more. It is a multi-sensory experience that cannot be replaced by a kindle...#UKEdChat

A6 just recently I gave students some information on acid rain to read through, then modelled a story using that information before letting them put their own stories together #ukedchat
A6 Talk about books lots (I do this over lunchtime or when on duty), have a well stocked library (something for everybody) and be a positive role model - I like telling the children about books I've been reading and what I am learning/thinking. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q7
What can teachers do, as role models, to show their own love of reading for pleasure, and how do you demonstrate it?
▶Please use the hashtag & A7◀
and when I think of learning and children, I want them to have that whole experience as probably whimsical as it may sound. Books are in themselves a philosophy but I know kindle users (my husband) who adores it for his own valid reasons #UKEdChat

A4 - History? A bookish subject! Reading going on all the time.
I stopped having tests on homework. I would say: "OK. You've got ten minutes to write down what you learned from the prep" . This made the prep more pleasurable, I think. #ukedchat
I think ‘immersion’ is key. Whether that is the teacher becoming a story teller, or whether the child reads for them self, getting lost in the story is a pleasure to behold #UkEdChat

Great question. Depends on how much time S’s have.
Lots: S’s to read along
Little: if they use too much working memory to follow, listening to someone read is better #UKEdchat
A7 I talk to them about my favourite childhood books (some will find them in the library or in the classroom and borrow them). I ask them to try and read a little each day and I do the same myself. I tell them about books I've read and they ask me questions. #UKEdChat
#ukedchat A7 I have an #SEMH tutor group and over the years, I've given away loads of books by taking in ones that I've read and loved e.g. the Jason Bourne series, Spike Milligan war memoirs, with the proviso that they can keep as long as they read or pass on to someone else...
Completely #UkEdChat if only we could get quality texts in an engaging, creative and innovative on social media to engage young people to engage with useful stuff. If only 🤔
From experience: It can massively help those with dyslexia. I struggled though uni and my PGCE and had all but given up on reading for pleasure until I got my first kindle (and more specifically used immersion reading) - It was a game changer for me. 👍🏻 #ukedchat
Everyone is a reader, they just might not have found their genre or taste! Or may have had their own negative associations with reading throughout education. It happens, unfortunately. #UKEdChat
#ukedchat A8 Get creative. Joke books. Sports magazines. Guinness World Records. Fortnite guides. Pokémon books. Comic books. Find what interests they have and use it as an opening gambit. Never fails.
A8 Offer them a wide selection of books to choose from... there is something for everyone! Encourage them to talk about a book they like and really listen. Tell them you can't wait to hear about the next bit of reading they do and follow through. #UKEdChat

A8 Some of my less keen readers love reading newspapers for children. They enjoying sharing facts and information, so this is something I make time for so that they feel good about themselves as readers and as comprehenders. #UKEdChat
Ha ha! I love the smell of new books and treat books I read with lots of care, The chn notice this. I often buy books and say to my class I've bought them especially for them either for story time or to lend to particular children who might like the themes in the book. #UKEdChat
