The #TXLchat provides a forum for Texas librarians (but not limited to Texas librarians) to create collaborative connections, share educational resources, and foster life-long learning.
Checking in from Tucson, AZ – Good evening! So glad you are here to share w/all of us. Looking forward to learning with/from you! #txlchat#SchoolLibrarianLeadership
Last week on Monday our LHS Library, Ts, Ss and Staff celebrated the generous grant from @DollarGeneral’s Literacy Foundation. We’re thankful and excited to reach the goals we set in the proposal. #LyfordLibraries#txlchat Link for their grant programs. … https://t.co/mlivSjjxRL
Hi TX friends - I'm Jennifer - Former MS and HS TL, I now currently live, work, read and drink lots of coffee in Olympia, WA. Not a Texan, but <3 my Lone Start State friends. :) #txlchat
A1 Smile, be proactive, & communicate. Make eye contact & acknowledge everyone in the library, hallway, lunchroom, at duty, etc. Showing that you are an approachable, positive person who wants to help will open all kinds of doors. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A1: Food, Friendly Face, Connect with new teachers, and always help whatever the issue is (even if it isn't Library-related). #buildrelationships#txlchat
A1 My go-to is attending PLC meetings for ALL departments, of course we want to be in on ELA but we can help with EVERYONE! #txlchat#SchoolLibarianLeadership
A1: Always being willing to collaborate in new and inventive ways. Holding programming that students request and draw in staff as well. Staying active on social media so people can see what we're doing and who we are working with #txlchat
A1 #schoollibrarians make connections bet classrooms/library, resources/curriculum, standards/outcomes, pro dev/practice, schooling/College/Career/Community Readiness = #SchoolLibrarianLeadership#txlchat Do you have a most successful strategy for your learning community?
A1: just reaching out! Taking to teachers about what's new and how I can help, custom handouts like brochures and bookmarks and emails 📧 #txlchat#SchoolLibrarianLeadership
A1: Being invitational-whether asking for teacher and student ideas for bk orders to inviting them in for cake or popcorn-inviting is key word. #txlchat
A1: Food, Friendly Face, Connect with new teachers, and always help whatever the issue is (even if it isn't Library-related). #buildrelationships#txlchat
A1 Finding where I can help and offer resources. A few weeks ago, one of our teachers asked me to teach her students coding. We have had a blast creating hide and seek games! #txlchat
A1: This morning I held a coffee reception before school for all the new teachers. Connected informally and shared with them what the media center has to offer! #txlchat
A1 I make regulars meetings with my academic coaches to discuss curriculum and we discuss ways that I can collaborate with teachers to support the learning in the classroom. #txlchat
A1: Recently started a monthly "digest" with tech tips, reader information, app/ext features, etc. and have them hanging around the school. It's an easy way to get info to faculty/staff. AND there's aways chocolate in my office ;) #txlchat
A1: we try to find ways to add to school culture by celebrating pie day, National Choc Day etc. things to bring our community together socially. #txlchat
A2 Providing students a safe inclusive space where kids can feel free to be themselves, even if they aren't the traditional bookish kids. Kindness and flexibility with students and staff show that you resource they feel comfortable to use #txlchat
A1.Instead of focusing on what I had to share, I trained myself to LISTEN. Ts, admins (et al) will tell you what they need if given the chance. Then connect based on authentic needs. Authenticity matters. Otherwise it feels like sales pitch for a product no one needs. #txlchat
A: I am making sure admin knows what I have to offer and I’m seeking out staff for collaboration. I sent out a snack to our teachers and have been providing tech tips. I even went in to co teach with ELA. #txlchat
A2 Librarians build a reading culture by providing reading programs and book events throughout the year. Also building a collaborative culture by working with teams. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership@FISD_Libraries

This year I took food to science PLCs and shared science resources. Then hosted new ELA teachers for lunch (we have lots of new faces) #foodforthought#txlchat
SmithReads: A2 Librarians build a reading culture by providing reading programs and book events throughout the year. Also building a collaborative culture by working with teams. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership FISD_Libraries
A2 (1/3) Because libs have the opportunity to see ALL students, staff, admin, families, we have a responsibility to contribute to the school climate & culture in a positive way. #txlchat#SchoolLibrarianLeadership
A2 (2/3) We want the library to be a safe space for all but not at the expense of climate & culture. Leaders do not taking part in gossip & negativity. Your Ts, and ultimately your Ss, will thank you for it. #txlchat#SchoolLibrarianLeadership
A1: I build community with Ts by visiting their classrooms and getting to know more about them personally. We all have a life outside of school. I build community with Ss by connecting with their goals and future plans. Love supporting them at extracurricular events #txlchat
A2 We provide a different space where students can learn about what interests them or take a minute for themselves to calm down or read. I love being a gatekeeper to a space that they can call their own. #txlchat
A2. Culture stems from a set of shared values. TLs contribute to culture by sharing, in ALL things, (from displays to circ policies) what they value. In my experience, if a TL's values visibly and consistently align with Ts and admins, they're more likely 2B supported. #txlchat
A2: school libraries are the ♥️of the school! The environment we have there for teachers & students builds a culture of asking for help, seeking information and reading!! #txlchat#SchoolLibrarianLeadership
A2: #SchoolLibrarians build a reading culture on their campus by providing a diverse collection of books, and encouraging students and staff to be readers. Also sharing ideas with Ts and letting them know how you are willing to support them #SchoolLibraryLeadership#txlchat
A2 When I arrived at my school, the library was for ELA. My 1st year, I did a makerspace with Math that supported what they were doing in class. Last year, I hosted a makerspace playground for teachers. This has really changed to mindset to Library is a learning commons! #txlchat
A3 Ask to be at the table, include yourself and your mission into the mission of your admin, a few favors for admin to show what an asset you and your program are, find outside stakeholders to sing your praises to your admin to show your value from a different lens #txlchat
#txlchat#SchoolLibarianLeadership A2 Build culture by being trustworthy and a good listener. So many teachers trust me that they come to me with all types of professional situations. They know I will listen to them.
As a 2nd yr librarian, I am working to build a relationship w/ each S. Learning their name, book interest, outside of school life-this lets the Ss know they are important to me. By building relationships, it creates a positive building culture. #txlchat#SchoolLibraryLeadership
Librarians build culture in schools by creating an inviting and welcoming environment, supporting teachers and their curriculum, and accepting and celebrating students and their interests. #txlchat
A2:Libraries are the center of the school. We are like the school’s living room. As librarians we are one of the key players to set the tone. So if we help, listen to others, lead with kindness, offer a place to create, and innovate it’s contagious. #txlchat
A2: School librarians are the hub and school connector. They are often the only person in the building working directly with every single student and every single staff member. The influence of establishing culture, whether positive or negative, is powerful! #txlchat
A2: Culture at our libraries this year is focused on reading challenges themes. I imagine that a party with no balloons, color, sound would be a bit drab. So we bring in color, decor, activities (social) to build culture. #txlchat
A2: At elementary school with interact with all students and teachers culture stems from knowing the pulse of the school and what is going on. Being connected #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
Yes!!! We just had a site based meeting today! Librarians need to be one of the first people principals look to for leadership. I am blessed to have admin who truly value librarians. #txlchat
A3 Ask to be at the table, include yourself and your mission into the mission of your admin, a few favors for admin to show what an asset you and your program are, find outside stakeholders to sing your praises to your admin to show your value from a different lens #txlchat
I couldn't agree more, but I also wonder.. In my experience, most of our networks are populated by other educators, which is great. But how can we expand our social media reach beyond our PLNs? How do we get the folks we really need drinking the kool-aid to join us here? #txlchat
Yes to building influence through positive connections! And increasing positive learning environment - climate and culture both! #SchoolLibrarianLeadership#txlchat
A2: School librarians are the hub and school connector. They are often the only person in the building working directly with every single student and every single staff member. The influence of establishing culture, whether positive or negative, is powerful! #txlchat
All your ideas are topnotch tonight. Love them all. It shows you re really invested in building a great leadership culture on your campus. Here's question 4. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A2: I am having each staff member post the current book they are reading. We started off week one with a book club for students. I am having a writing contest for banned books week. #txlchat
I created a different Twitter account just for the library. Get the superintendent to follow that, often the community follows the superintendent, and I might get them noticing what I'm doing. #txlchat
A4 We offer training to staff during waiver days, 1 on 1 sit downs with teachers by request on tools and skills, sessions at district level trainings, instructional videos and tutorials, esp. loving @iorad for web based tutorials #txlchat
A3 Collaborating with Literacy teachers has been made easier year bc I asked to be a part of the ELAR Vertical Team. We created a Genre Book Tasting bc is our 1st meeting. Can’t wait to see what happens next! #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A2b: also I want students and staff to be proud to read. This week they share why they deserve the right to read and they are wearing book related buttons around school (staff & students). #txlchat
A4 #schoollibrarians collect data to determine the PD needs of admins/Ts. Then collaborate w/others to fill knowledge gaps and improve teaching/learning = building capacity for improvement. #SchoolLibrarianLeadership#txlchat
A4 I was SO EXCITED to present on how the school librarian can help teachers with their appraisal scores using digital tools at our Staff Dev day yesterday and got some awesome feedback from teachers afterwards #txlchat#SchoolLibrarianLeadership
#txlchat#SchoolLibarianLeadership A4. How do I lead PD?
Find a common problem that is relevant and timely to teachers and offer them a solution that is applicable not just theory based.
A4 I plan to start lunch time PDs in the library where Ts can get .5 CEUs. In the past I’ve done it after school but we will have after school tutorials 3 days a week so that won’t work. #txlchat
A3 All adults who work in schools must be learners who model literacies/skills/dispositions for Ss. Coteaching #schoollibrarians can be leaders who show what effective future ready learning/teaching can accomplish. #SchoolLibrarianLeadership#txlchat
A3 Collaborating with Literacy teachers has been made easier year bc I asked to be a part of the ELAR Vertical Team. We created a Genre Book Tasting bc is our 1st meeting. Can’t wait to see what happens next! #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A4 Sometimes I led training sessions during lunch/conf periods. Sometimes it was after school or on the weekend. I would say most of my PD was on-demand. Ts called & I did my best to drop everything & help when it was convenient for them. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A4: offer to lead PD for the district, PLCs, teams and 1-1-what & when ever I can. Research, share new articles, tools, information, & resources. #allthetime#anywhere#txlchat
A3: I enact collaboration and leadership at my school through a Ss Tech Squad program @LyfordTechSquad I truly enjoy building up student leaders who collaborate with peers and Ts. #txlchat
A4 Currently seeking opportunities to offer Twitter “mini workshops” before or after staff meetings to help teachers learn more about sharing their story #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership@FISD_Libraries
Here a unique way to connect w individual teachers. Started by the principal but why couldn't the librarian do it on his/her own? #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A4: Currently I send out newsletters via @SmorePages with ideas I can help Ts with, as well as leading PD in using #Chromebooks I also recently joined our Vertical Team Meetings to see ways I can support #SchoolLibraryLeadership#txlchat
A4: I hope you can help me on this one—there was a call for PD leaders and I was looking for ideas would benefit all teachers no matter grade or discipline. Is that even possible?#txlchat
A3 It's our responsibility to dig into the curriculum & take thoughtful solutions to Ts. By showing an interest in what's happening in the classroom, Ts will begin to think of us first when they need help. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
All your ideas are topnotch tonight. Love them all. It shows you re really invested in building a great leadership culture on your campus. Here's question 4. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A4. We have to let go of the idea that we're not leading PD if we're not holding sessions after school/on work days. PD can = flipped vids, 5min "PD tastings" at a faculty mtg, etc. Meet Ts where they are and give yourself credit for the work you are able to do. #txlchat
A1 I try to be a dot-connector in my learning community. I might be able to find resources, people, or connect ideas. I build trust and become trusted. #txlchat
A4: I wish I had more opportunities to share on campus but it's mostly 1to1 or tips via newsletters. I do have the opportunity to present at our district level PD & I have presented to the district seconds librarians. #txlchat#SchoolLibrarianLeadership
All your ideas are topnotch tonight. Love them all. It shows you re really invested in building a great leadership culture on your campus. Here's question 4. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A4: Work with your instructional coaches and staff developers to help plan, lead and implement workshops/trainings either synchronously or asynchronously #txlchat
A5 We plan on strategically choosing PD that will benefit staff most, conducting needs assessment survery of staff to see where THEY feel they need to most help, continually look for new tools and content to provide to staff #txlchat
A4: Right now I lead PD through the modeling of tech integration. I have a day with New Ts at the start of the year and I also have a full #LyfordTechBash day during our inservice week. My goal this year to collab more with Ts #txlchat
A3 Collaborating with Literacy teachers has been made easier year bc I asked to be a part of the ELAR VerticAl Team. We created a genre book tasting cafe from our first meeting. Can’t wait to see what happens next! #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A4: I send out newsletters customized for each academic department. They highlight new materials, critical resources, tips & tricks, etc. Each department needs information relevant to just them. #txlchat.
SmithReads: A4 Currently seeking opportunities to offer Twitter “mini workshops” before or after staff meetings to help teachers learn more about sharing their story #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership FISD_Libraries
A3: I'd say the most frequent opportunity I have to do this is through a digital learning committee that I've served on for the last several years: collaborating with Ts & leadership #txlchat#SchoolLibrarianLeadership
Agreed - Whenever we are coteaching or teaching w/another educator in the room we are actually giving and receiving (!) PD!
#txlchat
A4: and just like we help students at point of need, my staff comes to me when they need a little tutorial or to talk through something new #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
YES! I love using @screencasto to share with the Ts, and the Ts love that they can watch on their own time. Also, giving mini PD just as we walk down the hallway at the time of need. #SchoolLibraryLeadership#txlchat
Q1 making connections through personal conversations, building relationships, being a YES person who is helpful and problem solving #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A3. I'm such a collaboration curmudgeon! Collaboration shouldn't ever be a goal. Collaboration is a strategy. One that we employ when the work demands it. Our goal should be meaningful work that requires partners in order to create exceptional experiences for kids. /rant #txlchat
A5 When I work with libs, I ask them to think of that one teacher/dept whom they haven't yet forged a connection with. I get libs to develop a plan for how they can use what they are learning with me to connect with that one teacher/dept. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
#txlchat#ScholLibrarianLeadership A5. Create accountability partners. Tell people your goals and ask them to check back with you. Do the same for them.
A5: I am presenting at state level technology and library conferences, engaging in a book study with @technolibrary, digging into peer coaching with the #learnbps library media specialists, and digging into the 4C's with professional learning partners. #txlchat
All your ideas are topnotch tonight. Love them all. It shows you re really invested in building a great leadership culture on your campus. Here's question 4. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A5 When #schoollibrarians coteach w/Ts, we give/receive personalized job-embedded PD, including > application/integration of resources/tools/strategies & developing Ss literacies/skills/dispositions via #inquiry learning. #SchoolLibrarianLeadership#txlchat
A2 take an interest in my learning community beyond the school walls... find out interests & activities to ask and learn about... we spend so much time together, why not take a moment to understand #txlchat
A4: I work closely with our instructional coach. I have been meeting with teachers during planning period to showcase resources. I have been training teaching individually on demand as well. #txlchat
All your ideas are topnotch tonight. Love them all. It shows you re really invested in building a great leadership culture on your campus. Here's question 4. #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
A5. I think one of the most effect ways to contribute to the professional learning of others is to be a learner yourself. The more you learn, the better your practice and the more contagious your passion. Ppl will recognize and respond to your hunger for learning. #txlchat
Judi Moreillon @CactusWoman has a new book out. Maximizing School Librarian Leadership. Each chapter is filled with great insights. She also has a Facebook book study group. Check it out. #txlchat#schoollibrarianship
A5: It's been such a busy year so far I haven't figured out a lot of my plans! I'd really like to help my colleagues grow with literature! It's hard in HS to convince Ts that they do have time for ind rdg & novels that tie into curriculum. #txlchat#SchoolLibrarianLeadership
A2: school librarians promote a reading culture (current collection, promoting books!) and a scholarly research culture through research instruction #txlchat#schoollibrarianleadership
#txlchat friends, I'm actually hosting a @TCEALIBSIG webinar tomorrow about how we can use #texquest resources to partner with teachers! Great ideas about #schoollibrarianleadership are bound to be a part of it! Hope to see you there!
A3:Because I am on rotation, I email with teachers a lot. They send me lists and send me their lesson plans, and I get the resources they need. I make myself available for teachers as much as possible. #txlchat
A5: The more i know, the more I can share! I plan to read, listen, and continue to learn through my professional associations: @aasl@ncte@TXLA and @CLA_NCTE#txlchat
A4: offering tech instruction b4 & after school, during plan time, weekly web posts re: tech, reading, research & resources #txlchat@SchoolLibrarianLeadership
A5: I plan to sit in during planning periods so I can offer training that staff need when they need it. I think when we are on the same page it is more meaningful. #txlchat
Love this! Have you read any @gretchenrubin ? She has great stuff on the 4 tendencies of people and how obligers (one of her groups) need accountability partners and had lots of great suggestions on how to find them and work with them #txlchat
A5 presenting at local & state conferences. Bringing back ideas to share with my PLCs, finding ideas on one of my very best professional learning tools (@twitter)... but take that idea & more importantly ask how we can work together #txlchat
Does anyone know how to sail a boat and be willing to Skype with some kids about it? Columbus Day is coming and we would love to see how to sail and make some connections! Please let me know if you can help or know someone who would like to do this! #boatsailing
