Any #English teachers following #edchatie tonight who have something to say about tonight's topic - or any Junior Cycle teachers?
  • susanleahy Sep 18 @ 3:40 PM EDT
@fboss seems like everyone is concerned about the new #juniorcert but nobody knows what to say #edchatie
  • susanleahy Sep 18 @ 3:42 PM EDT
Susan, Language teacher but interested in hearing about #juniorcycle Seems like last week's #edchatie huge questions but nothing to say...

The Classroom Divide:A look at socio-economic inequalities in Irish education @rte 9:35.Should be very interesting @Soc_Assoc_Ire #edchatie
  • fboss Sep 18 @ 3:44 PM EDT
I agree. It's interesting as the new des tiptoes will come in for all subjects over time until all subjects get them by 2022 #edchatie

Dismayed to hear that up to 5 different examiners corrected an individual student's work (4 sections in HL paper & AT) #edchatie
    In reply to @fboss
  • conorsmurf Sep 18 @ 3:52 PM EDT
So few distinctions. New bands supposed to help ease stress and pressure. Try telling that to Ss aiming high. #edchatie
  • susanleahy Sep 18 @ 3:52 PM EDT
Yes, this I thought was quite extraordinary #edchatie and am wondering about rationale?

I saw this in The Independent https://t.co/zSNdgMKcSN #edchatie
  • conorsmurf Sep 18 @ 3:54 PM EDT
Conor in West Cork. I have no problem with teething issues once the results were fair but did this exam even allow that? #edchatie
  • conorsmurf Sep 18 @ 3:55 PM EDT
Exactly. Have told my Ss not to worry about Distinctions. But that's easy for me to say. #edchatie

4365 HL JC Pupils received A grade in 2016. Seems like the standard has dropped drastically with the new JC!! #edchatie

Would appreciate some votes from my @EdChatIE #edchatie colleagues tonight.
  • conorsmurf Sep 18 @ 3:58 PM EDT
That's nonsense. What else was going to happen with a new exam? #edchatie
    In reply to @fboss
  • PresWexEng Sep 18 @ 3:58 PM EDT
And the examiner couldn't even access the entire student's script, just the section they were correcting! #edchatie

Eistear from Mayo, by the way. MFL teacher mainly, taught JC English last year #edchatie

Looking at the paper, it's difficult to make out what was being assessed or what the criteria for good answering would have been #edchatie
    In reply to @fboss
  • PresWexEng Sep 18 @ 3:59 PM EDT
Or sending out the message that standards in the subject haven't been "dumbed down?" #edchatie

We're halfway through tonight's #edchatie discussion on "Junior Cycle English Grade Bands: No merits to a merit"
  • conorsmurf Sep 18 @ 4:01 PM EDT
This is a major issue. What do they want? Clear, sparse, multi point answers. Well written answer. Well argued answers? #edchatie
    In reply to @EllenKMetcalf, @fboss
  • EllenKMetcalf Sep 18 @ 4:03 PM EDT
Another issue was the omission of fiction from the HL paper It's plausible, if unthinkable, that Shakespeare won't appear in 2018 #edchatie

Hi everyone, late to the chat this evening. Mary in Holycross teaching English and RE #edchatie
  • conorsmurf Sep 18 @ 4:06 PM EDT
That's actually a lesser issue for me. That's more about assessment in new JC in general. #edchatie

  • EllenKMetcalf Sep 18 @ 4:10 PM EDT
Seriously, a completely illiterate person, or some-one who had never seen written English, could gain full marks on that question #edchatie

  • GermanTeachIRL Sep 18 @ 4:11 PM EDT
Well going from 4365 high achievers to 856 is a bit extreme! Lot of pupils disappointed. The Merit marking band is too wide. #edchatie

  • PresWexEng Sep 18 @ 4:12 PM EDT

Consensus in our staff room suggests they were marked too hard at upper end of HL and far too leniently at bottom end of OL.

New examining method, used with French last year, JC English this year. Examiners received no overall sense of a pupil's style.

It's so crucial in a subject like English to get an overall "feel" for the student's approach to different writing task #edchatie
    In reply to @GermanTeachIRL, @susanleahy, @fboss
  • GermanTeachIRL Sep 18 @ 4:20 PM EDT
English examiners tend to have different styles, what one likes another will dislike & I think this had a major impact on results. #edchatie
    In reply to @PresWexEng, @susanleahy, @fboss
  • GermanTeachIRL Sep 18 @ 4:23 PM EDT
Yes I really think so. It's totally different to correcting Maths or even French, where the answer is usually correct or incorrect.#edchatie
    In reply to @PresWexEng, @susanleahy, @fboss
  • PresWexEng Sep 18 @ 4:23 PM EDT
The new online marking system is just a very cold way of correction. Almost like a robotic process applied to such a rich subject #edchatie

We're into the famous final five minutes of tonight's #edchatie discussion on "new JC Merit". Any past thoughts, ideas, proposals?
  • susanleahy Sep 18 @ 4:28 PM EDT
Though Languages have written section too, which does have a subjective aspect like English. The overall feel to a paper is gone. #edchatie
