  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:05 PM EDT
**Q1** What are standards? Who determines what they are? #FLedChat
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:07 PM EDT
Hello FL Peeps from sunny Vero Beach - East Coast representing! Happy to be here with the mighty @TG_Neil #fledchat
  • Dale_Chu Apr 4 @ 8:07 PM EDT

  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:08 PM EDT
Hey, Chris! So glad to see you here. I'm not so certain about the mighty part. :-) #FLedChat
    In reply to @geographywee
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: Standards depend on context. I'm in a private school so pretty much we align our standards to what the school defines as rigor - and to reach certain programs that we participate in like AP and Singapore Math. Would imagine the public school answer will differ! #fledchat
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:10 PM EDT
Hey, hey #FLedChat! Michelle, Media Specialist from Daytona Beach here!
  • AndrewSharosAP Apr 4 @ 8:10 PM EDT
Hang on with us tonight through the top of the hour at 8PM CST for the inaugural #APTeach chat! We would love to have you build this PLN with us for the first time tonight! #suptchat #fledchat #miched #ohedchat #tlap #learnlap #leadlap
  • EMariePascual Apr 4 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1. Standards are benchmarks for student learnings, leveled out for educators to assess student progress towards these goals. Each state’s dept. of edu determines standards #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: In public schools in Florida the @EducationFL sets standards. They represent a minimum expectation for each specific course. #FLedChat
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:11 PM EDT
    Hey Michelle! #fledchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Hey, Michelle! Better late than never. Glad you could make it. #FLedChat
    In reply to @kmichellehowell
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Standards ... the framework of what we teach ... #FLedchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:12 PM EDT
    Hey, Dennis! #FLedChat
    In reply to @DennisDill
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1. Standards define what we want our students to know and be able to do. They are set broadly by the state and then refined at the district level. #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:13 PM EDT
Our second question is in the que. #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:14 PM EDT
** Q2 ** What is curriculum? Who determines this? #FLedChat
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:14 PM EDT
    My pleasure! #FLedChat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:14 PM EDT
    Hey Tammy #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:14 PM EDT
    You are technically correct. #FLedChat
    • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:14 PM EDT
So technically, you have no control locally over the standards that your students have to reach!
      In reply to @TG_Neil, @EducationFL
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:15 PM EDT
    Hi, Lisa! #FLedChat
    In reply to @BrookinsBits
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A2: Curriculum is the “how” we use to teach the standards, yes? #fledchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Apr 4 @ 8:16 PM EDT
Curriculum is a verb. It is what you do. It is also everything you DON’T do. #FLedChat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:16 PM EDT
The curriculum is content - the "stuff" of learning - and mastery of that is determined by the standards set. Can include techniques for teaching and learning #fledchat
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:17 PM EDT
My standards creates uniform coverage of US history between 1st contact and 1877 ... also makes US History at school A the same as US History at school Z 700 miles away #FLedchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Here is the MW definition. #FLedchat https://t.co/x8CJuLMQMi
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Curriculum is comprised of the materials, texts, videos, programs, etc., that are to be used to help students master the standards. The trick is to put it together so that you don’t have to constantly look elsewhere for supplemental materials. #FLedChat
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2: Curriculum can be determined locally by the teacher or can be pre-written and followed. #fledchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Q2b: Who determines the curriculum? #FLedChat
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Curriculum is how I dress up my standards ... sometimes it looks like a model on the runway and sometimes it looks like lipstick on a pig. #FLedchat
  • PaulONeill1972 Apr 4 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: Curriculum is a living breathing road map. However, our original path isn't always the path we remain on. Curriculum provides direction but we must use our GPS to make sure that true learning is taking place. #FLedchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2: Curriculum is all the stuff we use in a particular course. It doesn't necessarily have to be tied directly to a standard, but should lead to a deeper understanding of the overall subject. The classroom teacher is ultimately the one responsible for it all. #FLedChat
  • EMariePascual Apr 4 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2. The teacher determines curriculum and all of the day-to-day materials/resources the classroom uses #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Question number 3 is on its way. Trust me. It's on the syllabus. #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:22 PM EDT
** Q3 ** How do you determine if a topic should be included in your lesson plans? #FLedChat
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3: From what I understand, our Ts are told if a topic will be included or not. #fledchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:24 PM EDT
Who determines the topics in your district? #FLedChat
    In reply to @BrookinsBits
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A2b. In my district the experts at the district level do, but teachers constantly have to supplement, either for researching purposes or for enrichment purposes. #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:25 PM EDT
So doesn't that supplementing change the curriculum? #FLedChat
    In reply to @kmichellehowell
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: While most of our curriculum map is predetermined, the "learning moment" is important - so media events in context - something that relevant to the students lives that apply to the concept that is being taught! #fledchat
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:25 PM EDT
I think it’s the local admin/educators. Lots of discussion, and admin has final say. #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A3. Does it support students as they work toward mastering the standards? If not, probably shouldn’t include it. #FLedChat
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:26 PM EDT
I think of it more as enhancing—:) #FLedChat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Your admin must have a lot of free time. I've never had an admin that had time to determine my topics. #FLedChat
    In reply to @BrookinsBits
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:27 PM EDT
I’m going to maintain diplomatic silence! ;) #FLedChat
    In reply to @geographywee
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:28 PM EDT
They are VERY involved. They get down in the trenches and rub elbows w/Ts #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:28 PM EDT
Our SS Curriculum maps were constructed/revised by SS teachers ... adding muscle to the standards providing guidance and ideas for other SS teachers. #FLedchat
  • jeffmason Apr 4 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A.3. Ask the students what topics they want . #FLedchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:28 PM EDT
Question four is knocking on the door. #FLedChat
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:29 PM EDT
    I love that! #FLedChat
    In reply to @geographywee, @TG_Neil
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:30 PM EDT
** Q4 ** Who is responsible for making sure the curriculum meets the standards? Why? #FLedChat
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:30 PM EDT
    That’s what I dream of... #FLedChat
    In reply to @jeffmason
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A4: Ts do—they. Know the standards, and compare the Curriculum to the standards. #fledchat
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:31 PM EDT
consistency is important. especially when you have a transient population moving from one school to another. #fledchat
    In reply to @geographywee
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A4: This lady from the district or, for private schools - an accreditation authority... #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:33 PM EDT
Is there an accreditation authority for every subject and every grade level? #FLedChat
    In reply to @geographywee
  • jeffmason Apr 4 @ 8:33 PM EDT
My "next-door" teaching neighbor's (mar. bio) first day question was "What do you want to learn?" The next day he had a syllabus written including labs. He was may hero. #FLedChat
    In reply to @kmichellehowell
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A4. The people who choose the curriculum materials determine this, but again, with each classroom being unique, the teacher assumes responsibility for ensuring students’ mastery of the standards & sometimes must tweak things for students who need it. #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:34 PM EDT
    #FLedChat
    • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Not in the independent school but we have to align and articulate a curriculum to the standards set by accrediting agencies like FCIS or NAIS.
      In reply to @TG_Neil
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:35 PM EDT
*sigh* That’s awesome in the truest sense of the word. #FLedChat
    In reply to @jeffmason
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A4 I jest. I would suppose that the state tests that students take help to ensure that the students meet standards - but I often hear that is not the case. #fledchat
  • jeffmason Apr 4 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A.4. The teacher. They are the professional. Everyone else in the building is support. #FLedchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:37 PM EDT
Question number 5 is on the high dive. Can you see it? #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:37 PM EDT
** Q5 ** Which is more important the standards or the curriculum? Why? #FLedChat
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:38 PM EDT
That is heroic, but I teach US History, therefore the topics covered are mandated to be part of history from 1st contact to 1877 ... or whatever the parameters set for the class. #fledchat If I don't do a good job it screws the kids over in the next level class
    In reply to @jeffmason, @kmichellehowell
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:38 PM EDT
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:39 PM EDT
the problem with state testing is I have 122 standards, but have 20 - 40 questions on the test ... something is not being tested. #fledchat
    In reply to @geographywee
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:39 PM EDT
Dennis, how do you determine which historic events get taught? There's no way you can teach all that in one year. Some things have to be glossed over, don't they? #FLedChat
    In reply to @DennisDill, @jeffmason, @kmichellehowell
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:40 PM EDT
That’s a great point, Dennis. So, student choice/student voice takes place in other ways, right? How they demonstrate their learning, etc. #FLedChat
    In reply to @DennisDill, @jeffmason
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A5: Kinda knew this was coming. How do we determine the delivery of the standard through the curriculum? Some students will demonstrate mastery easily- others will struggle with the basic application of concepts taught. Do high test scores say that the standard is "met"#fledchat
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:41 PM EDT
    A5: I think it’s a 50/50. I mean, the standards kinda drive the curriculum, don’t they? #fledchat
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:41 PM EDT
depends on how you define "event" ... many is big picture ... "causes of the Civil War" ... individual influences ... ramifications of court cases #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil, @jeffmason, @kmichellehowell
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A5. The standards take precedence over the curriculum. #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A5: I consider standards as a minimum expectation. My curriculum goes way beyond the standards. My professional judgement determines curriculum. There are topics I feel are important because the support standards even if they aren't listed. #FLedChat
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:44 PM EDT
I like the way you think, Tammy. There’s more to teaching than simply standards. #fledchat
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:45 PM EDT
Love your last point! Some students are great at test-taking & will appear to have the standards mastered, but can’t apply them to any type of project or practical application. Others don’t test well, but can apply the standards practically. #FLedChat
    In reply to @geographywee
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:45 PM EDT
I started teaching before Florida had Sunshine State Standards. When they came along, it was interesting to see what the state committees thought was important and what wasn't. #FLedChat
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:45 PM EDT
On the other hand, without standards, how do you know the minimum to include in the teaching? #fledchat
  • nathan_stevens Apr 4 @ 8:46 PM EDT
    Like a triple lindy #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:46 PM EDT
Student Voice/Choice is a fallacy ... we talk about it, but the reality is their "choice" is usually limited to the options we give them ... that is not choice ... that is manipulation. #fledchat
    In reply to @kmichellehowell, @jeffmason
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:46 PM EDT
I remember listening to some educators way back when. Lots disagreed with what were chosen for standards #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:46 PM EDT
Because I'm a professional. Sorry, I don't mean that to sound rude, but I'm a certified teacher. If I can't figure that out, then I shouldn't have earned certification. #FLedChat
    In reply to @BrookinsBits
  • EMariePascual Apr 4 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A5. There can always be gaps in both. High testing pressure can place undue stress on a child and produce biased scores correlated socio-economic status. On the other hand, not everyclassroom is equipt to reteach a skill or concept until each child demonstrates mastery #FLedChat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:47 PM EDT
    Exactly! #FLedChat
    In reply to @nathan_stevens
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:47 PM EDT
Reality is most of the standards overlap and I cover several at the same time ... we could make them more general, but then some would slip through the cracks. #fledchat
    In reply to @geographywee
  • nathan_stevens Apr 4 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A5 Curriculum if you are giving those two choices. I definitely gave “or” a lot of thought #fledchat
    In reply to @TG_Neil
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:48 PM EDT
So, how do we move beyond just giving it lip service? (I really want to know because I agree with what you said!) #FLedChat
    In reply to @DennisDill, @jeffmason
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:48 PM EDT
At the end of the day, if the curriculum does not make relevant sense to the students, no matter standards set - some will comply & meet; others will just eyeball roll and not. Perhaps explains many disengaged students in our schools (and that's public & private btw!) #fledchat
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:49 PM EDT
conflict to conflict is really cool ... it is how we remember history ... only remember Presidents/Leaders as they are connected to a conflict. #fledchat
    In reply to @geographywee, @jeffmason, @kmichellehowell
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:49 PM EDT
    well said. #FLedChat
    In reply to @geographywee
  • BrookinsBits Apr 4 @ 8:49 PM EDT
I should have reworded it differently. My apologies. I should have said, how do we know what “they” want us to include minimally #fledchat

  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:52 PM EDT
It is tough ... we have to balance ... doing what we can in the box that has been created for you ... we can say we are for kids reading, but how do we supply choice on a limited budget ... #fledchat
    In reply to @kmichellehowell, @jeffmason
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:52 PM EDT
** Q6 ** Are standards implemented equally across grade levels or subject areas? Why or why not? #FLedChat
  • DennisDill Apr 4 @ 8:53 PM EDT

A6. I think implementing standards equally in any area is impossible. It involves human beings & we all bring different levels of expertise & work ethic to the table. #FLedChat
  • kmichellehowell - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:58 PM EDT
Even though I try to avoid it, I’m in! #FLedChat
    In reply to @TG_Neil, @geographywee, @DennisDill, @jeffmason
  • geographywee Apr 4 @ 8:58 PM EDT
A6: @DennisDill raises a good point - different socio-economic access and resources will mean that statewide standards will be reached in different ways across a geographic area and not all have equal access - so in the big picture it's hard to implement equally #fledchat
  • TG_Neil - Moderator Apr 4 @ 8:58 PM EDT
