Welcome Julie! Rockstar guest moderator!
Q1 Not enough. Too many students are spectators to , waiting for college to happen to them.
Q1. Are we currently preparing today’s students to be successful after graduation?
A1: I think it depends on the institution. Often students are prepared w/ necessary content, but not always w/ the skills
Hey all I'm a and startup advisor who invests in the space
A1: Quality is important, as is a focus on helping all students achieve their individual aspirations
Quality matters. Strong faculty, quality content, building social capital, and real-world experiences are all important.
Q1 The world changes quickly and it is hard to know what we are preparing students to become, but the old model does not do it.
Kelly from here ~ I'm Ops Director of and Adj Professor. Happy to join!
Thanks for joining us (for your first chat too!) Sean
A1: We could certainly do better. A lot is left up to chance. Great support at college but student has to seek it out.
A1 Prep 4 college must begin in high school. Spend too much time on getting INTO college, not enough what happens once there
Thanks for joining, Earnest!
A1: Not as much as we could, but better than we've done decades before... https://t.co/j01DHLzkvY
Q1: Do you think we are currently preparing students to be successful after graduation?
Spectators is an interesting term - what do you mean by that?
depends on the program. My biz program prepared me VERY well. Some of my non-biz friends felt differently
A1. Sometimes. I am, no surprise, big supporter of community college as it can be more attuned to need for post-grad success
A1 We aren't doing enough to prepare students with financial, consumer, law & other life skills they will need in their lives.
A1: Intellectually, sure. In terms of resilience, attitude, and curiosity, no.
Hello! Sharon from excited to be here!
How do you build strong higher ed for students? Focus on faculty, content, social capital + IRL experiences –
Thrilled to be asked to be part of tonight's on outcomes; love working with on
A1) depends on who you mean by 'we' - different programs, different outcomes
So important! How can we do better ? https://t.co/ZMVRu6RoVg
A1: Intellectually, sure. In terms of resilience, attitude, and curiosity, no.
A1: Relevant, quality curriculum, applicable to the ‘real world’. Also perseverance and grit.
as an intern, do you feel like your school is preparing you to graduate?
Important differentiation. Quality outcomes matter to all, but those outcomes differ by student.
A1: Yes and no. "We" = diverse range 4,000 colleges, 23 mil students. Generally good but uneven, & often not career focused
Welcome to ! Tonight we will be asking the question - are we preparing students for success post graduation?

Make sure to add to all of your tweets tonight for this chat. Your voice matters!
Q1: Do you think we are currently preparing students to be successful after graduation?
A1: Part of the problem is the idea of "after graduation", students should be welcome in the community for life long learning
what about your program do you feel was the most effective, Michael?
A1 If we r talking about k12, then no. We r preparing test takers.
Blow up college admissions game (including tuition finance).
Hi Michael! I think that it is currently preparing me to graduate, but my most valuable experiences have been hands-on
A1. But there is so much opportunity to do more across all spectrums of
A1 cont That being said, success follows drive. Primary/undergrad pgms need to help define what success means to them
I'm joining in moderating tonight's with and . Jazzed to be here https://t.co/fz1Ww6bkeR
Hi ! I'm one of the moderators of tonight's chat w/ + & the face behind tweets. Thx for joining!
Q1 tough to determine the job outlook for earlier ed teachers- key element is introducing collaboration skills with peers
A1 But in some innovative programs we r doing better. And when tchrs r given freedom we do better at preparing whole people
Would love to hear your insight on how is doing it better!
Clearly evolution is needed but great ed is about being part of something bigger. Much of current US high ed does that so well.
I think success is increased when school looks more like the real world.
A1 Need to recognize differences betwn undergrad (liberal arts important)+grad (professional programs) contribution 2 outcomes
I get nervous when the purpose of higher Ed gets tied too tightly to vocation. Yes- prep is imp and we need to do better, but..
How do you think we can deviate away from this?
great point, Eric. Conversation around teaching 'Grit' needs to extend beyond ,
True, then we test students to get into college, and test them while they are there
Thanks for joining, Sharon!
A1 Success in an ever-changing job market is about soft skills. Too many colleges focus on hard skills, chase after hot majors
"hands on" meaning "not in the classroom?" what's an example of one of those experiences?
Agree! Community colleges have focus on students that need jobs and have worked to form employer partnerships.
I agree "graduation" signals completion when the new job market is suited for individuals who can upskill
Certainly a fine line and the pendulum needs to swing more towards a happy middle between intellect and practical.
A1:huge variability based on institution.small state universities have struggled. Check out https://t.co/1WJz3HEyc6 Mindblowing
we're thrilled to have you join us, Jim!
Much comes down to how we define 'successful.' Success at/it/with/as what?
Yes!! Though as I said earlier, we can only guess at the world our students will walk into
Many of the best experiences that I have had have been a result of reaching out and stepping out of my comfort zone.
+ create culture among faculty that academia has to react&respond. Antiquated lessons hamper success https://t.co/cliYDVXUhL
So important! How can we do better ? https://t.co/ZMVRu6RoVg
A1: Intellectually, sure. In terms of resilience, attitude, and curiosity, no.
and even in those hot majors there is still not a lot of support in understanding career path
Our executive MHA program is working to transform healthcare practitioners into leaders
Definitely important to help folks define it for themselves.
Len! https://t.co/caASYZ1D0z
Our executive MHA program is working to transform healthcare practitioners into leaders
is now trending in USA, ranking 31
curric is lng trm group prjcts. Learn to wrk w/others, figure out what you need to learn
Speaking for , our students have great opps for online & offline interaction w/faculty & fellow students 1/2
"Real world" full of hate and ugliness. Would rather raise kids in better conditions.
Agreed. Hallmark of a liberal arts education. All pgms should focus on communication, negotiation, etc https://t.co/c2yEZPyqSM
A1 Success in an ever-changing job market is about soft skills. Too many colleges focus on hard skills, chase after hot majors
Yes, internships/conferences where I have been able to apply skills learned in the classroom in a "real life" setting.
Q2 coming up in 1 minute...
Q2 coming up in 1 minute…
I think the issue I see with peers is pursuit of education as a bridge between confused points in career direction.
True. Flexibility is key, isn't it? https://t.co/6FIFt1422a
Yes!! Though as I said earlier, we can only guess at the world our students will walk into
Absolutely. And it's a debate (liberal vs vocation) debate we've been having since earliest days of Am HiEd
Great student support and Career Services help students achieve their goals 2/2
Would love to hear what you think we are doing better, https://t.co/83nX9y8hI8
A1: Not as much as we could, but better than we've done decades before... https://t.co/j01DHLzkvY
Q1: Do you think we are currently preparing students to be successful after graduation?
Yes, a quality that will never not be needed/valued
Love it Jabari. https://t.co/hwyIdfQ6YY
I think the issue I see with peers is pursuit of education as a bridge between confused points in career direction.
Q2: How do we DEFINE student success post-graduation?
“ is creating active, cutting edge, change agent teachers — not scantron producers.” – cc:
We put too much focus on numbers and grades, what we really should be asking is how that Ss got to their answer
A1: flexibility, relevance, perseverance, grit necessary skills as most folks switch jobs numerous times over their lifespan
A1 Majors≠careers. Freshmen pick major, get to senior year & job titles like a foreign language to them https://t.co/Bf7mk8MvEM
and even in those hot majors there is still not a lot of support in understanding career path
thanks for joining us, Leonard!
The e schools themselves are offering great support systems but being visionary for one's place in the workforce is critical.
what does that mean in practice?
But we can certainly have a system that accommodates both, and the spectrum in between, too. https://t.co/tOpFcVYDUm
Absolutely. And it's a debate (liberal vs vocation) debate we've been having since earliest days of Am HiEd
Let's call soft skills essential skills
A2 Defined mostly by graduation, which is surely an accomplishment given too many not finishing: https://t.co/2cpDWsbtNi
A2. Strong returns – for the graduate, but also the industries they work in, and the communities where they work and live.
A2: Mostly we define student success with their ability to gain employment or further their educational experience.
A2: Success post-graduation = long-term happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment with the time we are given.
stuff like this... we can connect better and learn from each other...
A2: Successful grads experience advancement - both personally & professionally
Q2: Adaptable students that are ready to be flexible and ongoing learners in their profession and life
get ready for our next few questions, Ali :)
. opting out, pushing for reform of standardized testing, while empowering Ts in current system
A2 Job success plays a role too, but many colleges do a poor job measuring % of students employed & job market changing
A2 (Cont.): But, it shouldn't be limited to such. We should emphasis a combination of hard and soft-skills
I'm not sure what you mean by that...what is the alternative that you would like to see?
at the grad level, most students are looking for skills that will enhance their careers.
Q2+ is not only how do we define student success, but how does that definition look different for different types of students.
Yes- we should strive for better world. But also give students skills & determination to create it themselves
A2: There’s external, societal defined success, but also internal success for the student. Those could be vastly different.
So often aspiration is left out. Important. https://t.co/3wJ1DnLdFM
A2: Success post-graduation = long-term happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment with the time we are given.
project based learning is so important, thanks for sharing!
Our employer survey 4 yrs ago: they want people who can think critically, write well, communicate effectively, work in teams
A2. Student success post grad can mean personal happiness - important, not easily measured, & different for everyone.
Yes, we have an abundance of standardized testing. How do we equip Ts with the needed resources to eval?
A combination of cutting edge content and a focus on person leadership development using reflective learning
A2: Not well enuf. Even at HS level, focus is to finish the test. Little emphasis on how it translates https://t.co/Sc4ImAwdoQ
Q2: How do we DEFINE student success post-graduation?
. and current Ts need support 4 what they know is best for Ss - creative, customized curriculum & assessment
A2: success is defined by students meeting their personal career goals whatever they may be.
True- does success = happiness? Or some measure of financial flexibility and engagement... how could we measure?
I understand why people are weary of job only focus, but the job outcome important. Partic in grad ed. https://t.co/eR49yKlHe0
A2: Depends. For vocational programs success is a career, but others may define success as longterm enrichment as well
not unless we are educating them with the skills and technology that the current industry demands
Need to let students see failure. Too many adults don't model failure, esp in college classroom. https://t.co/CQZedDu5ZH
Yes, we have an abundance of standardized testing. How do we equip Ts with the needed resources to eval?
yes that would sure be nice. I wouldn't have gotten that exp in any other part of college
what's a question you'd ask to ?
A2) In our program, success is defined by outcomes. Continuous improvement is our goal, based on data provided by grads
A2: Well-rounded, skilled in partic. area, happy and confident people
What are you specifically measuring?
Very true in grad ed. But many may never get grad degree. So what do we want BA to mean? Not clear https://t.co/td3xq3I1tx
I understand why people are weary of job only focus, but the job outcome important. Partic in grad ed. https://t.co/eR49yKlHe0
And when high cost is involved!
perseverance and grit are so important, especially in graduate education.
Through our set-backs we are often able to learn more than we could have ever imagined. https://t.co/P7hXKJE65x
Need to let students see failure. Too many adults don't model failure, esp in college classroom. https://t.co/CQZedDu5ZH
Yes, we have an abundance of standardized testing. How do we equip Ts with the needed resources to eval?
A2. Outcomes are a matter of qual + quant success. Important to not just look at the numbers — look at the students.
A few minutes late but pumped to be here.
Q2: Success = fulfillment & growth for the individual in their life. Having a career where they are doing their best work.
what does "outcomes" mean though Kelly?
Many students more interested in doing good than doing well (esp when young!); debt issue so important https://t.co/xAeiUyo1nu
A2. Student success post grad can mean personal happiness - important, not easily measured, & different for everyone.
did they get a promotion/raise/entry into desired field, etc.
Our long term goal of our MHA@GW learners is that each one makes healthcare a little bit better
Success has multiple vectors- some quantifiable and some not (ex intercultural competency, resiliency, creative problem solving)
A2: successful job placement, financial stability and personal growth
how do you define this at 2U?
Is success making progress on personal goals, which may be financial? The measurement is progress not the goal.
A2: we need full transparency from univ's on grad's career growth. #'s and $'s are a key part, like it or not.
Q2 I think we define on a per program basis. We need strong vision 4 where we want our Ss to end up.
RT A2: Success post-graduation = long-term happiness, satisfaction, and fulfillment with the time we are given
Q3 coming up in 1 minute...
Q3 coming up in 1 minute…
Those who design programs should have clear measurable outcomes and goals for job placement
Wonder how much students' fear of failure driven by high stakes admission? Do we set ourselves up 2fail students?
Yes grad students are spending a lot of time and money to get advanced degree to get leg up or start new career
Agree. The issue of debt can get in the way of good things happening. https://t.co/tfuFEhkeU4
Many students more interested in doing good than doing well (esp when young!); debt issue so important https://t.co/xAeiUyo1nu
A2. Student success post grad can mean personal happiness - important, not easily measured, & different for everyone.
Q3: How can we MEASURE student success beyond retention and graduation rate?
MT Outcomes are a matter of qual + quant success. Impt. to not just look at the numbers, look at the students
A2: Finding a career/collection of skills that bring students fulfillment and prosperity; which lead to better leaders
Content and programs shouldn't be based on what professors are comfortable teaching but what the world needs
Q3: I'm hearing happiness, progress, resiliency, growth (etc). Are there existing ways to measure these?
We need to teach resilience. Grades reflect how much you can improve Not how inadequate you are. https://t.co/Dp2L3mhtNv
Need to let students see failure. Too many adults don't model failure, esp in college classroom. https://t.co/CQZedDu5ZH
Yes, we have an abundance of standardized testing. How do we equip Ts with the needed resources to eval?
although I've seen so many students in 's programs pursing for incredibly selfless reasons
In addition to better data about retention & grad rates, we need to know more about and earnings after graduation.

Q3: How do we measure? https://t.co/MYywQzxb47
Q3: I'm hearing happiness, progress, resiliency, growth (etc). Are there existing ways to measure these?
A3: Through the quality of learning experiences they have while pursuing their degree
We need more and in secondary ed. https://t.co/bScXGd1BEG
Q1: Do you think we are currently preparing students to be successful after graduation?
A3: Need to conduct surveys w. those 5-yrs-out, 10-yrs-out, etc. (Our school does, from time to time.)
How do we know that supports their needs post graduation?
We also need to eliminate achievement gaps, such as those between low-income & more affluent students.
Hear, hear! https://t.co/5MUQhCC461
Those who design programs should have clear measurable outcomes and goals for job placement
A3: Look at if learning objectives are being met and if students are achieving their desired personal and professional goals
My privilege is showing, but did 1st grad program purely due 2 passion. Hasn't helped career overtly, still consider a success

Early and often RT Q3: How do we measure? https://t.co/X0B4KomsQN
Q3: I'm hearing happiness, progress, resiliency, growth (etc). Are there existing ways to measure these?
What have you seen in terms of results? Where can you grow?
A3 I like the work is doing to measure a good life and good careers. Need to measure beyond job + salary.
Q3 We need to talk to graduates at intervals to ask if they still feel their degree was worth the time and $
A3: How many people want to be involved with your institution as alumni? Are those opportunities available?
We’ve been talking a ton about measurement beyond the obvious. Working on it, but tricky. But we are all over this.
Need more data over time. My degree means different things to me now than in my 20s and 30s.
I think this could reveal itself by program, but a mixture of both trad. instruction & practical exp.
I would be curious about the happiness/success of students who do alternative programs versus traditional college
profs have often been turned down for jobs or grants and had manuscripts rejected- no shame in failure https://t.co/v17ALwmArT
Need to let students see failure. Too many adults don't model failure, esp in college classroom. https://t.co/CQZedDu5ZH
Yes, we have an abundance of standardized testing. How do we equip Ts with the needed resources to eval?

Q3: Research on the long term employability of students & their contribution to job creation are metrics I think are valuable
Our accrediting body requires that we link competencies to student outcomes. Not sure that we know how to do this well
Me, too! Lots of promising work coming up on that, I hope.
I like "financial stability" as a goal hadn't thought of that one
Q3: Measure success with satisfaction surveys, ROI for students, alumni involvement at inst.
A3: job placement outcomes are a big one. But also did the degree get you to where you wanted to be in your life/career?
A3: ROI. Edu an investment, each person should see dividends whether measured in $, job stability etc https://t.co/ZyLibSGzrH
Q3: How can we MEASURE student success beyond retention and graduation rate?
. (cont.) As well as providing honest feedback on such
Ask the students! Satisfaction surveys periodically after grad-- are you happy with your outcomes? Why?
Q3 I think one of strongest ways to measure success is to ask grads: Would you recommend program? At 1 yr out, 5 yrs out, 10.
Issue is that we are all blessed to even be in this convo. I would bet everyone on this chat is product of great degree.
What kinds of things do you think we should measure? https://t.co/BfWGC6lU7m
We’ve been talking a ton about measurement beyond the obvious. Working on it, but tricky. But we are all over this.
Our early @GW students are lining up to be alumni mentors to newer students
A3: ROI if career; let's also consider quality of life surveys and alumni tracking which progressive u's are doing. Publish.
That's awesome! More people shld have access to this kind of enrichment https://t.co/6mxKOBDrnb
My privilege is showing, but did 1st grad program purely due 2 passion. Hasn't helped career overtly, still consider a success
Cost of college vs outcome could also play a roll in post program happiness -esp if you are struggling w/loans
A3 - and after "measuring" through qualitative/quantitative data, must then look back at longitudinal profile of students
I was thinking the same thing! Would I want my colleague to take on the same program?
different things for different students. Can't use a one-size-fits-all approach.
Lots of great resources from and others to help make good financial choices. Check out
A3:I'm wary of the debt argument. Each level of ed attained multiplies future earnings.Dbt is manageable if paired w/ rt degree
Great question. Have family in military and trade HIGHLY satisfied with training for 'real world'. And no debt
Qual. measures can be as important as quant. Bottom line: do students feel their degree was worth it https://t.co/0TZEUtXeVt
Q3 We need to talk to graduates at intervals to ask if they still feel their degree was worth the time and $
last time an elevator heading to ? Glad you're on this - since networking is key to job success.
I think we need to figure out ways to get better feedback post grad. My college rarely check in on what I do now
Exactly! and, the Economics Lit on PUBLIC GOOD outcomes is surprisingly limited, let's do more.
Agreed, but we need to have a conversation about "excessive debt" https://t.co/uOB5rAp0hQ
A3:I'm wary of the debt argument. Each level of ed attained multiplies future earnings.Dbt is manageable if paired w/ rt degree

resilience is a huge factor in success at all levels. I can see difference it makes
On the flip side people with disabilities are some of the highest educated but struggle the most w/job prospects
A3 Don't forget Public Goods, we default to individual! Community engagmt, economic growth, voting, longevity, children, etc..
Also success of those who start college after work experience vs who attend immed post-HS. https://t.co/ADSzaaBc3q
I would be curious about the happiness/success of students who do alternative programs versus traditional college
After graduation I was thrilled to become a mentor , and jump at the chance to attend events. I feel supported!
Very important work, especially around affiliation. Degrees help form new networks that lead to new jobs
Q4: Has the emergence of online education and learning changed how you prepare students for graduation?
Agreed. Why hasn't the variable priced undergrad degree argument taken off?
In ways, success will always need measurable outcomes like retention and graduation but employment and personal narratives
It could be useful as a policy tool (STEM less $ to increase ) or tied to future earnings (STEM$>Liberal arts$)
Completely agree with this sentiment. Degrees do help form new networks that lead to new jobs. https://t.co/CkF1c00VVO
Very important work, especially around affiliation. Degrees help form new networks that lead to new jobs
Q4: Online ed has changed how I think abt Ss ability to get ongoing ed- teach them to find resources & the stamina to complete
have you seen any correlation between mentorship and student outcomes among these students?
Q4: Creates far more student access and ability for dynamic support, so it definitely changes the game for the better.
worthiness. Did my college experiences blaze a trail to help pay loans and manage debt.
Q4: I’m a nerd for saying this ...but DATA! Understand risk, make more efficient and learning more effective.
Q4: Has the emergence of online education and learning changed how you prepare students for graduation? https://t.co/ik0Bqo2jUJ
A4: Learning objectives for online and on-campus students are the same. Quality online edu = rich content delivery + engagement
A4: It's only revealed what was true all along, that success means more than just showing up. Self-motivation is key.
A4 Online allows for easier lifelong education. College is no longer a box, but a platform for upping skills throughout life
A4 I would advocate for online learning to be central to all students experience. Critical to college and work prep and exp.
A4. Online ed may have more importantly prepared students for lifelong learning. https://t.co/8Dzda3ZAiD
Q4: Has the emergence of online education and learning changed how you prepare students for graduation?
Q4 Absolutely! All Ts can teach well online IF they get explicit instruction in it. It must be transformative use of tech
The Program is so young that we have no hard data yet
Really good point! Data will help us continuously improve education.
As progresses, we need more , . https://t.co/I2tVTHyljI
Quality matters. Strong faculty, quality content, building social capital, and real-world experiences are all important.
Q4 in tonight’s : Has the emergence of online edu + learning changed how you prepare students for graduation? How?
if "free college" is the dialogue and policy question now is the time to have the discussion!
A4: The means of delivery may be different, but the end goal is the same: quality content in an engaging environment
A4. Schools that make the transition will win. It's simply too effective a value prop at the graduate level.
Highlights fact we're educating employers as well as employees. What lessons do we want hiring managers 2 learn?
Amazing platform gives us wider array of tools for interaction+wider reach to types of students https://t.co/1VVlPDe3nF
Q4: Has the emergence of online education and learning changed how you prepare students for graduation?
affiliation & affinity lead to alumni engagement which opens doors & leads to post grad job success. https://t.co/V9830MvJkO
Very important work, especially around affiliation. Degrees help form new networks that lead to new jobs
Do you believe online learning equals the quality of in-class learning? What are the benefits/disadvantages?
Online ed allows more students to work and learn at the same time. Don't have to wait until graduation. https://t.co/4aDxovf2QA
Q4: Has the emergence of online education and learning changed how you prepare students for graduation?
A4: Yes, it means I err on the side of using more tech, as that's what they'll need in their future https://t.co/Tw5LHgpqju
Q4: Has the emergence of online education and learning changed how you prepare students for graduation?
But the possibilities for delivery to even more students has increased tremendously!
It's one of the critical components of residential undergrad education. Not sure why colleges don't tout it even more
Q4 coming up in 1 minute…
Yes! How? And Why? And What if? https://t.co/ur6aXrCAWH
We put too much focus on numbers and grades, what we really should be asking is how that Ss got to their answer
Q4: Has the emergence of online education and learning changed how you prepare students for graduation?
Student's comfort w/ & expectation of online experiences changed how I prepare students for graduation https://t.co/5wCPbM4D7D
Q4: Has the emergence of online education and learning changed how you prepare students for graduation?
Agree completely . Love the personal narrative note! https://t.co/o2oBs643YX
In ways, success will always need measurable outcomes like retention and graduation but employment and personal narratives
How have you used online learning in your classroom?
Training is key though! 2 many dist Ed profs just try to upload brick and mortar class! Diff medium, diff needs
Each has its adv and dis. There is a time and place for both. https://t.co/EZc1kVOa8T
Do you believe online learning equals the quality of in-class learning? What are the benefits/disadvantages?
Emergence of online learning has transformed what it means to be digitally-literate Ts + students: https://t.co/Ugsgnb0RfB
Yes, the possibilities for delivery have increased both accessibility and diversity in the classroom! https://t.co/bYkyZYQIKp
But the possibilities for delivery to even more students has increased tremendously!
A4 Online lrng has the potential to change the world; not hyperbole. We MUST prep Ts who can support that.
Only if you teach students how to connect with and use those networks. https://t.co/7LRU7IlFnl
affiliation & affinity lead to alumni engagement which opens doors & leads to post grad job success. https://t.co/V9830MvJkO
Very important work, especially around affiliation. Degrees help form new networks that lead to new jobs
A4: The general emergence of online media & streaming has changed my approach. Every student can be a media co.
It is definitely a new way to think about engagement
A4: when I was a student in , I could apply what I learned immediately. Limited opps for that in trad degrees.
Very true. Colleges don't do enough to help students navigate their networks & learning in the future. https://t.co/D2jsrmwFNJ

Online education gives us access to a group of learners we could have never reached
again, it's very objective. Motivated students + brilliant faculty + community = great outcomes, on or offline
Q4 Online Ed since largely professional has that orientation: key is competitive mkt, unbundling, focus - bring to all Ed

As online learning + edu grows, so does the need for digital literacy skills to be engrained in k12 + higher ed classes.
Quality of both online and in-class depends on so many factors beyond mode of delivery. https://t.co/1ju8zfQMSa
Each has its adv and dis. There is a time and place for both. https://t.co/EZc1kVOa8T
Do you believe online learning equals the quality of in-class learning? What are the benefits/disadvantages?
Key to quality are live discussion sections platform enables paired with asynchronous material https://t.co/t0GE8P3G8I
Do you believe online learning equals the quality of in-class learning? What are the benefits/disadvantages?
The world economy is in the midst of the digital shift. To be relevant Ss will need to know how to work and learn digital env.
True, sometimes the level of engagement can be low, it needs to be a very intentional effort to create collab
And these learners can share their opinions and experience with others! https://t.co/3PavR60o1k
Online education gives us access to a group of learners we could have never reached
now there's something I could stand to do a deep dive on. Any suggested resources?
Q4 and in "residential"/trad setting, Online can free students for work and global experiences, service learning, etc
Not true! Mother Theresa made no money! https://t.co/yklFcLCl2a
A2: we need full transparency from univ's on grad's career growth. #'s and $'s are a key part, like it or not.
How do you see those conversations differing from in-person experiences?
Q5: What role should edtech companies have in measuring impact & ensuring outcomes?
And access to instructors we couldn't reach before. Flexibility of online often suits their needs as well
., and are a few of the companies that are helping improve .
my experience with my school's alumni network was not positive. Technically it was almost impossible to access
One of our mantras at @GW is "network or no work." Working with permits our learners to expand their networks
I also sat on a Dissertation that found the same thing at the grad level about affinity. Dr Binkley.
Online education allows for more lifelong learning. Students don't feel boxed in by timing, their jobs, etc.
A5: They should gather & analyze data to ensure that their products are ensuring outcomes that students need/want
A5. Tricky. Too many edtech co’s think they know everything. But Outcomes are >= on-campus
Q5: I don't think traditional programs do this well either, edtech companies have an opportunity here to do better at this
Our online students say they are more intimate than prior on-campus discussions - can't hide on screen
A4: I don't hear institutional hesitation abt online ed quality like I did in 2013. Smart ones are buying-in.great for students
A5 is the Wild West. More due diligence is required to wade through all the products apps hardware software.
IMHO the edtech partners are better resourced to gather data and provide analysis. Schools need to constantly iterate.
Q5: The Ecosystem's assumption/orientation is pvt firms are the experimenters, innovators, risk-takers. Then best practice.
Listen to the students, the teachers, the users of your ‘product.’ Create tools that solve problems + measure their solutions.
A2: Just joining in! Student success post-graduation is when they make a move towards profess. goals https://t.co/t8mVbLrepU
Q2: How do we DEFINE student success post-graduation?
I agree entirely. This is a place where we can make a huge difference. https://t.co/FIvvkF2eMF
Q5: I don't think traditional programs do this well either, edtech companies have an opportunity here to do better at this
A5. Edtech should work with educators to measure and ensure success. No one can do it alone.
Technology is transforming classroom differentiation. All students have potential to learn content at the highest level.
A5 Be a good partner. Share best practices. Open source results to improve for public good. https://t.co/BdktXPn8qp
Q5: What role should edtech companies have in measuring impact & ensuring outcomes?
A5: companies often have resources (and less redtape) to quantitatively measure outcomes than universities do
EdTech comps move quickly and often can't afford due diligence, but I think it is a necessary next step in viability
A5: edtech can use means others cannot, like data science and machine learning to make a study of what this actually means
Absolutely. Always wanted to teach for your alma mater? Online programs provide that opportunity https://t.co/ZLD5FDeXHA
And access to instructors we couldn't reach before. Flexibility of online often suits their needs as well
A5: The entertainment value of product, if the videos are dry, no 1 watches them so outcomes arent met https://t.co/5nZhH7AJax
Q5: What role should edtech companies have in measuring impact & ensuring outcomes?
RT Our online students say they are more intimate than prior on-campus discussions - can't hide on screen
Implementation and context make or break Too many toys not enough concern for learning https://t.co/uoGItOiOdV
A5. Tricky. Too many edtech co’s think they know everything. But Outcomes are >= on-campus
and to 's point, can move fast!
Funny! I feel the opposite. When you are constantly iterating product and proving $ value to investors it can fall off
Yep but networking w/ alums is a skill - a bit of email mktg, a bit of sales. Not rocket science but not intuitive
Q5: can bring a lot of knowledge & resources to achieve shared goals. We can do great things together.
. Support faculty in gathering answers to Qs they define, plus gather standard data on jobs, satisfaction, salary, etc
A5. Create tools that solve problems + measure their solutions. Listen to your students, teachers, users.
A5. edtech companies can help by actually doing the measuring. simple, but can be overlooked
I can vouch for that! Online was more egalitarian in a way, too
A5. Also, but creating tools that help remove barriers to access.
Yes, partnership is key to ensure student success.
True. We don't root for our comps to lose bc we need industry validation. Plenty of room for good guys https://t.co/ByJgyi3Ie4
A5. Tricky. Too many edtech co’s think they know everything. But Outcomes are >= on-campus
Yes, listen to your stakeholders! Students, teachers, and users have valuable feedback. https://t.co/OtxukkwcMS
A5. Create tools that solve problems + measure their solutions. Listen to your students, teachers, users.
Yes! I wonder what the data on that is for free classes that are accessible to students with no access otherwise
agreed - have to have faculty helping to define problems on the ground floor
Edtech companies cannot ensure anything. Measuring impact is easily doable and should be transparent. https://t.co/z7WRKrdt1W
The data we have is so important and vital to each part of the problem. Working with partners we can really make a diff.
Understand our UX. Many edtech companies selling data platforms w/o understanding problems or context. https://t.co/9PYdxkjaCN
Q5: What role should edtech companies have in measuring impact & ensuring outcomes?
. IMO online suffers 4 lack of F2F w Ts or other Ss. Each enhances other; our job now 2 find best combo for S sake
Innovation and assessment require time for creativity and reflection. Sometimes in short supply in institutional settings.
Edtech comps should provide data that is important to customers & investors; NPOs should lead measuring social impact
Faculty who have taught for have been incredibly excited by + full attention https://t.co/u1HZTMbypv
I can vouch for that! Online was more egalitarian in a way, too
I would agree, though I wonder how using video and moving away from traditional forums could change that
A5. Edtech companies can also put measurements into student's hands to help them measure their own success.
Online ed right now is like online dating 10 years ago. Still stigma. But starting to end. It can be excellent.
thank you for brining us access in this conversation. Important to discuss post-grad success for ALL students

Let's not forget to talk with the folks who hire our graduates for their assessment of student performance
So true, this is the age of information, the data being gathered by edtech can make a difference https://t.co/lr6XIfujWS
Edtech comps should provide data that is important to customers & investors; NPOs should lead measuring social impact
Research I have read on this says exactly that. Course Signals at Purdue did exactly that with great results
Its true. People that can get into Berkeley don’t think online. But that is changing. Takes time. https://t.co/oAhtJWPD0U
. This is where I am: what is truly INNOVATIVE?? Let's be clever and find new ways to get these parts hitched!
Q6: How do you think higher education and how we prepare students for it will change over the next 10 years?
💛💙 MT Online ed is like online dating 10 years ago. Still stigma. But starting to end.
A6: I think that we will see more flexible degree offerings in their delivery and post-graduation application.
Q6: How do you think , and how we prepare students for it, will change over the next 10 years? https://t.co/C4GCLnrkCq
A6: Degree programs will fit around a student's life, not the other way aroung. Data & tech will continue to enhance learning
A6: We need to help students gain the stamina to learn anything on their own

Q5: What role should edtech companies have in measuring impact & ensuring outcomes?
This is getting me all fired up. I love reading all of your thoughtful responses.
Community colleges have been serving these Ss for years. Should look to some of their innovations, too.
Q6 Unfortunately too little unless we en
A6. I think the notion that the demise of US Higher ed is upon us is overstated. So much good. As a pell grant student I know.
This is really the BHAG of education. How do we prepare students for a future that does not yet exist?
A6 Here's a thought: In a gig economy, grads not employers will drive learning/skill development in future.
Yes! schooling doesn't have 2b linear- timing of what you learn when can be more in the hands of the Ss https://t.co/iWpXyfG1ex
A6: Degree programs will fit around a student's life, not the other way aroung. Data & tech will continue to enhance learning
Suspect more unbundling and swirling of programs. Students building own programs but needing support 2 choose from many options
Use social media, other interfaces to leverage community, place Ss in new age apprenticeships offering realworld/tech hybrid.
A6. But quality in the online environment is real now. Ignore it at your peril. It’s not the future. it’s now.
I like the approach! https://t.co/BQHW0TNFrk
A6 Here's a thought: In a gig economy, grads not employers will drive learning/skill development in future.
A6: idk, we didn't see the iPhone coming. The world will change and ed will adapt as it always has... https://t.co/mwqArKAcqz
Q6: How do you think higher education and how we prepare students for it will change over the next 10 years?
An 18 yo college student of the future is 10 yo now. Lots of data to give us hints. Diversity, tech, huge!
Q6: we need to quickly change, grow & learn. Adapt (or Die) Partner (or Perish) Collaborate or Collapse
Right now, employers drive much of since they hire and pay for tuition. That will change in gig economy
A6. Those that lead the change are doing pretty impressive things, and I don’t mean me. I mean the leaders at these schools.
A6: Hopefully we can chip away at the structures that sequester enrichment and good careers from the people that want them
A6: Changes? Different teaching styles can go global, if there's international, cross-cultural appeal & relevance.
A6:Depends on what the job markets want. Ex. will credentialing take off and trad. degrees go away? must adapt.
A6 Potentially not as much as we'd hope unless we reboot w/ some *systemic* innovations, new incentives, & pragmatism. We can.
A6: Student-centric learning & a heavier reliance on technology to create more data-driven outcomes
Interesting. But who guides students who 'don't know what they don't know.' How 2 reach skill point when theycan act
I do think highered has the greatest room for disruption, it is still a CHOICE versus K12 which is mandated
true. important to measure affiliation for online students as well-alumni giving can be one quant. way to see
A6: Ed will need to create flexible learners that will align w/ the contract worker job market https://t.co/hKEMW1YwQe
We are focusing on systems thinking and learning to prepare learners for an unknown future
Just realized some of my answers get partial credit due to using "Q"x instead of "A"x ;)
A6:Strong highr ed brands grow empires on back of online, small regional schools falter. Institutional differentiation=paramount
Turn question on head: what will students demand? Greater inclusiveness, more flexibility https://t.co/13wxgkMrwI
Q6: How do you think higher education and how we prepare students for it will change over the next 10 years?
A6. In 20 years, you can argue campus graduate programs are luxury goods. Simply not possible for everyone
I agree but still there's much work to be done. colleague called a Medieval Castle trying to Fly.
A6) in the next 10 years online will be the norm for grad programs. Low quality programs won't survive.
Absolutely. I see more rigor and focus in our dist Ed programs than many on campus options. Online is legit.
+1 for disrupting the model :)
A6: Faculty in higher ed and K12 will both learn how to effectively use technology tools for teaching and learning
indeed! Collaboration and partnership are the future of in higher ed. https://t.co/bG1u29TOwg
Q6: we need to quickly change, grow & learn. Adapt (or Die) Partner (or Perish) Collaborate or Collapse
A6:I want to see data driving learning more; adaptive learning, measuring learning outcomes that can connect to career outcomes
Interesting that has been much slower than K12 https://t.co/H6RK6f0OjA
A6: Faculty in higher ed and K12 will both learn how to effectively use technology tools for teaching and learning
Thank you for a great conversation tonight! Thanks to & for moderating & for sponsoring
Name names. Who are the TOP innovators & how do we study & learn from them. https://t.co/yZ9PGs6QsW
A6. Those that lead the change are doing pretty impressive things, and I don’t mean me. I mean the leaders at these schools.
Consolidation is coming. Many current providers are literally a response to the demands of 1900 (demog, geog, etc).
A6: Employers will need to completely rethink their reliance on job specific 4 year degrees
Would love to see more of this! https://t.co/jh1Y4yywnl
A6: Changes? Different teaching styles can go global, if there's international, cross-cultural appeal & relevance.

K-12 Educators, another way to stay connected is our new educator-only facebook community. Join here: https://t.co/CECzrYomVg
Diff Ss will demand diff things. Foresee many institution types in our future system- a bigger buffet of options.
Thank you for all of you engaging in this topic. We need this level of engagement to make a diff.
Hopefully the SAPros & Academic Advisors are guiding & supporting students - but maybe as generalists. https://t.co/ZbdKpZjt9U
Interesting. But who guides students who 'don't know what they don't know.' How 2 reach skill point when theycan act
