Q1 How does homework (HW) play a role in creating a culture of learning?
Brad in Bangkok joining the eternal discussion on HW.
A1 Practicing & reinforcing the world of math, reading, social emotional intelligence, & so in a purposeful appropriate dose.
A1: appropriate HW (useful, meaningful, classroom-extending) helps Ss gain ownership of info, explore their interests
A1: Practice allows for mistakes. Creates proficiency.
A1. depends on whether homework is related to authentic project or authentic work or "worksheet" mentality
Sitting with daughters in largo FL. K-5 resource room T from Laramie Wy and 2nd T from Garden City Kansas
A1: If HW is guided by an objective and truly formative, it should serve as good practice for Ss in independent learning.
A1 - depends on how it is viewed! As a learning tool or punitive assignment. Makes a HUGE difference. 📓
100% First it's important to distinguish b/w meaningful HW and time-filling HW
A1: If purposeful and driven by curriculum and needs of students, HW can be important to COL-takes growth and learning anywhere.
1) many things can be a blessing or a curse. Hmwk mis-used can turn kids off from learning and make them task dependent.
A1: helps practice and reinforce skills/concepts but needs to be meaningful, authentic, relevant etc.
A1 Researchers Harris Cooper and John Hattie say benefit of ES HW on learning is nearly zero.
Let's hope it is authentic!
https://t.co/NFDJkpe7OT
A1. depends on whether homework is related to authentic project or authentic work or "worksheet" mentality
A1: Preparation for conversation that will happen in class.
A1 preps for future. Involves parents. Teaches responsibility and independence.
that seems a matter of how it's assigned, not viewed, no?
HW is my link from school to home. Families can connect to what their kids are learning!
A1: use homework as an extension of the classroom learning- practice and extend for discussion the next day
A1 Not sure if HW fits in COL except as choices for S’s that are optional & are only done if S believes it will help their learning.
A1 in a culture of learning I like separating homework (T decided) from work-at-home (S decided)
A1: If it has the purpose of practicing skills then it definitely supports the COL
A1 HW has been a constant in ed culture. I struggle to find data supporting it at the Elem level. On a personal level, I hate it
A1: Helps to reach responsible study skills and accountability for extending review outside the classroom.
A1 I love it when students choose to enhance their work or follow their passions. I get nervous when it's "drill to kill" interests
A1: Ss requested to do more of our in "class work" for HW bc they want meaningful time for project/disc IN class. Surprised me.
Practice - Iverson
https://t.co/Xph6gSyIle
A1: If it has the purpose of practicing skills then it definitely supports the COL
A1:HW carries such traditional & negative connotations that Ts, Ps, & Ss forget that it's LEARNING. HW must/should equal learning.
A1 if not differentiated and purposeful it is only a time filler.
A1: Does HW have to be done at home?
A1 HW can be used as a tool for students to use a skill taught in class in the real world. It can build connections.
Research shows that is not true.
A1: Either helps or hurts. Do Ss understand purpose and have some autonomy? Is it really about learning or is it busy work?
A1: Flipping the classroom- HW becomes class work.
Sorry early discussion has started as we wait for dinner
as a secondary teacher, I'm interested to know why you hate it - is it b/c of S response? Or the principle generally?
The "HW" I normally give my Ss is to read 20-25 minutes a night but this ties directly to our reading workshop & skills in class.
A1 I am wary of sending work home that "has" to be done because too often we don't know what life at home is like (often busy)
My A1 intention as well - Ss choose what's needed and wanted. https://t.co/ZspG1QZVPI
A1 I love it when students choose to enhance their work or follow their passions. I get nervous when it's "drill to kill" interests
A1 I am wary of sending work that has to be done because it widens the gap between those that will and those that can't (not wont)
Most studies at the elem level find no impact...but that is question #4.
A1: I give "things to think about". No paper and pencil. Just thinking. It respects student's time while adding to our discourse
A1 Meaningful homework can help students develop a deep understanding and passion for topics and issues.
Often a forgotten aspect of homework - no support at home https://t.co/YTGyWhIO3p
A1 I am wary of sending work home that "has" to be done because too often we don't know what life at home is like (often busy)
I wonder if there are any longitudinal studies that follow those same Ss into HS and beyond?
Hello . Robin from ATL & it's my first time joining you. I try not to give too much hw. Much research on its ineffectiveness.
a1) my son dribbles and shoots a basketball at home, in bed, outside, and in the gym. His sports HWK excites him for the real deal
Jacqueline, NJ, joining the chat a bit late this evening.
not in my opinion. Most of my kids do what would be their HW in class with me and their peers
Thanks to from for supporting us at
Q2 How do you make HW purposeful and time appropriate?
A1: I'm not sure that it does, as a parent it creates a culture of stress. Does stress support learning?
So I hope the moderators will give you extra homework!
or too much at home (I hope my Rube Goldberg machine gets my daughter a good score tomorrow...
A1 HW completion results included in academic progress grade does not promote culture of learning.
I agree. Differentiate it and many will clamor for the "extension" hw.
TY for joining tonight! We are talking the purpose of homework (HW) in a culture of learning! https://t.co/2m7HLWt2bt
Jacqueline, NJ, joining the chat a bit late this evening.
A1. Does the 'homework' have meaning to the student?
RT Q2 How do you make HW purposeful and time appropriate?
A1) HW has to be learning! Do not waste a child's time. Please
Drill and Kill generally means drill and have to reteach because Ss did it wrong at home. 2x the work = Not Learning
A1 Homework can also act as a very large inequity for some students. We cannot make learning unfair.
A1b) On the other hand, I've watched seniors sit idle during class on purpose with the intention of doing class work at home.
A2: I give Ss things to think about BUT when they choose to spend time outside of class, I validate and ask if they want feedback
A2: As a HS English T, reading is always appropriate and meaningful - I use in class discussion to light the reading fire for home
Has to be relevant to learning!
BAM
https://t.co/g6rgYjEupd
A1) HW has to be learning! Do not waste a child's time. Please
a2) HWK has relevance when class has relevance. Kids like learning. They like experimenting. They hate jumping thru hoops.
A2 Purposeful = make sure it is practice of something already learned
Time appropriate = assign just enough to reinforce
A2: As an English T, many times my HW is for Ss to read. As for time, it depends on the S. I don't think Ss should work for hours
My thoughts too Brad but I figured that would be a later question! https://t.co/lYMtLrZf7A
A1 HW completion results included in academic progress grade does not promote culture of learning.
Q2: Her dog did get her homework. Purposeful by connecting to learning outcomes with real world application! 15min
So true! especially with technology playing a role.
A2: Don't grade HW like practice for football is not graded. The grade comes in the game or real life implementation of the skill.
A1 Be careful. Hw can create a culture of stress and disgust of school. Responsibility can be taught in other ways
A2 Find ways students can link the skills to outside of school life. This provides purpose to work done in school.
Or so easy that it's really just a time filler because they are already proficient at the skill/content.
Also respects their home life's culture/context.HW can't be a punitive "must do" if education is equitable. https://t.co/LyLxCMGmT0
A1: I give "things to think about". No paper and pencil. Just thinking. It respects student's time while adding to our discourse
A2: Create homework that corresponds to their passions and make the time requirement non-existent. Results only for homework!
A2. As part of a bigger picture project/assignment that has meaning or for authentic practice
It widens the gap, discourages those without support and rarely helps those who "get it"
A1) Sarah says it can not be review only strengthening skills.
A2: I offer practice to students that will help them grow towards proficiency and give them some options - how & how much to do.
Mike, 2nd grade, Chelsea...lurking...for now.
and that is "real world" :)
Awesome Idea. could also find a way to communicate with Ps what the 'thing to think about' is for each day
TY for joining tonight! We are talking the purpose of homework (HW) in a culture of learning! https://t.co/aO2D0YTkwo
Mike, 2nd grade, Chelsea...lurking...for now.
A2 Purpose and relevance understood by student. Never tonight for tomorrow.
I could go off on the ridiculousness of packet hw that I see being touted at Elem level. I can't stand that.
Thanks for your perspective
A2: Connect to world outside of school/ student interest.
I'd love to see data to support the hours of work Ss , Ps and Ts put into it.
If it is for responsibility, it should not be given!
A2: Consider giving a few days to complete and/or optional HW.
A2 relevant meaningful and not punishing (esp not worth %) I like: read, math games, write & thinking time (esp pre-thinking)
A2 Don't forget other Ts r assigning HW too. Do you coordinate with other Ts? Differentiate? Not include results in academic grade?
A2: Purposeful: practicing a skill that is within reach/emerging for S. Time appropriate: tricky, range of S finish times on all.
When HW takes some a few minutes and others hours to do- how is that helpful?
two of my faves to read - living it helps too!
I have 45 min pds - to read a novel and practice reading skills, some must be done at home (1/2)
Jumping in for bit: I agree & I teach lower elem. 1st graders work so hard at school HW should be to play. https://t.co/GBQIazlEsu
I could go off on the ridiculousness of packet hw that I see being touted at Elem level. I can't stand that.
Attack multiple modes with HW- project based, inquiry based, technologically based, collaborative based, flipped, and beyond.
Ss choose to extend in-class assignments at home - by HS they're more self-directed - closes gaps instead of widening
TRUE! https://t.co/vTlPeDBb8X
A2 Don't forget other Ts r assigning HW too. Do you coordinate with other Ts? Differentiate? Not include results in academic grade?
responsibility of completing task vs completing dinner, helping w siblings, soccer etc
Teacher won't see stress and struggle when done at home
Q3 What do you do to make HW support the creativity and innovative brain of your Ss?
I always threaten to send in my son's unfolded laundry for him to fold during class...call it classwork.
Not including HW results in academic grade worth repeating!
really helps widen the achievement/ability gap!
And reteach tier 2 before sending it home
If Ss aren't passionate about their work, why is it worth doing/giving? Totally agree with you.
Homework = practice
If you are not referring to purposeful practice, should you be giving at all?
A2: HW=honor time & space for Ss to manage longer term learning obj. Has to fit a bigger picture. Tough to live these ideals tho
RT Q3 What do you do to make HW support the creativity and innovative brain of your Ss?
RT
Q3 What do you do to make HW support the creativity and innovative brain of your Ss?
. Do most schools have a school-wide policy for this to ensure that each S isn't drowning?
Great chat but I have to run. Thanks a lot!
Just read article other day stating is in fact no correlation with homework to overall success in school or test scores.
A3: offer options for how to complete an assignment - multiple pathways to success are important
A2 "HW" always a way to activate curiosity (find pictures, inspiration) - deepen curiosity via creation (draw, build, play, paint)
a2) K-5 you have to give parents the opportunity to be involved.
A3 Make it engaging and optional.
A3: They create videos with equipment they already own in settings not available at school. They also blog about their learning.
A3: I do my best to give choice. This week they are focusing on responding to poetry -create an image, sound track, or comic strip
A3: I don't give it (in the trad sense). Ss need time to be well rounded and at my level research says it doesn't impact learning.
I teach 1st as well. Am only 1 on my team that refuses to send packets. My Ss are required to read @ least 10 min/day.
A3: Don't put an exact deadline or grade. Growth is the target, not a grade!
A3 Having Ss connect what they have learned in class to things they like to do outside of school.
A3 No cookie cutter assignments. If it is a home project, it has to reflect the Ss style of learning and show their unique ability.
3) Ts dont like HWK either, but if it's fun and a challenge we are all more inclined. This is the chance for risk taking w/out fear
A3 - we should give the students the same thing we try to give our Ts - choice & voice options to prove mastery - spice it up!
we did a earlier this year about curricular choices, advocating for novels in the curriculum - they were awesome
A3: HW that involves the S to investigate, research new ideas, no pressure on knowing content the next day...that sparks creativity
A2) purposeful when it is tied to instruction. Good for review of lessons. Always helps when given choices.
Great question. This is why I have a difficulty with totally flipping my classroom. Reading becomes HW. https://t.co/Q9rKGUgZl0
Q3 What do you do to make HW support the creativity and innovative brain of your Ss?
A3 Love the idea of "HW" being a way to activate lateral thinking...discover connections in the world around us
I just don't get it. Lol.
A3. HW related to authentic project or inquiry based learning where Ss are answering their own questions
A3 continued: However a good majority of what my students do I would say is more in class practice than HW
A3 open ended, optional. If they get to it, great, if not oh well.
A3: Can be accomplished when we incorpoate choice and provide criteria that promotes creativity, rather than following of a recipe.
A2 Respect learning needs of individuals as a filter for decision making regarding hw. https://t.co/3P4IQdW8pN
Q2 How do you make HW purposeful and time appropriate?
Do you consider HW work not in class,so they have2take it home OR HW something specifically assigned to do at home. Does it matter?
HW should be to relax, enjoy extra curricular activities, and maybe to read a book for quiet time. Should not be part of grades
A3 Use technology to create learning and to connect with a larger audience. Allow students to explore interests and passions.
A3 I think if social media can be tied to the assignment (Instagram pics of related learning, Tweet responses) it helps engage.
I love the word choice. It empowers Ss. Better than HW used as a punishment.
Activate lateral thinking - discover the connections around us.
https://t.co/ijFYmYvCMJ
A3 Love the idea of "HW" being a way to activate lateral thinking...discover connections in the world around us
If Ss are in school for 7 hours a day with 2-3 hours of hwk that is 9-10 hours of work. Where do they have time to find passion?
A3: Include student choice as much as possible.
I think it can mean a few things... what do you define HW as?
I encourage and reward for nightly reading, but do NOT punish for not reading.
Q2: make hw something Ss can apply to immediate learning. Research for project or discussion. Must feel confident doing
A3b) Is it possible to implement without some S work being done in the home? Is this still considered homework?
For sure - and empowerment helps develop accountability and responsibility - important "soft skills"!
Is practice at home different from practice in class?
https://t.co/Wpve2jhafY
Do you consider HW work not in class,so they have2take it home OR HW something specifically assigned to do at home. Does it matter?
A3: student choice - express learning in ways that are maeningful to Ss- blogs, videos, creating word problems - and optional!
is all about homework tonight. Just and FYI (in case you didn't already know.)
Having a school policy on HW is important. Ensuring all Ts follow it is another story. https://t.co/8BPsKpGfRy
. Do most schools have a school-wide policy for this to ensure that each S isn't drowning?
Schools need PD on this - PLCs or something developed = COL for Ts. Love the idea. How to execute & fail moving forward?
A3 I love thinking problems - I've given riddles that need multiple days of thinking (or 'research') to get the answer
Not much time for anything. As a school, do we have the right to decide what families do with their time?
a sticker. Once the chart is full, they go to the treasure box. Works very well.
Prob w HW is the Ss who truly need extra practice don't do it/or get support at home, and the Ss who don't need it, always turn in
Or to just be a kid? https://t.co/NZ9yI369zx
If Ss are in school for 7 hours a day with 2-3 hours of hwk that is 9-10 hours of work. Where do they have time to find passion?
- I think that giving Ss instruction in study skills and time management is SO important too
Make HW inquiry based. Open ended questions. Allow the curiosity to unfold. Didn't really get the cat!
Q4 Hattie & Cooper's research both point to HW not having an impact at the elementary level? Agree/Disagree? Why?
A3: higher-level thinking, encourage , and watch emerge.
Good chat guys, wish I could stay longer! Have a good week
Well stated and oh so true.
Short answer, no. Long answer, nope.
Great idea for a HW question ... what fun thing did you do with your family last night?
RT
Q4 Hattie & Cooper's research both point to HW not having an impact at the elem level? Agree/Disagree? Why?
. This does not exist in Grade 12, should they already have these skills at this level or still developing?
A3: For elem, watch what Ss bring home to read, what they spend time on writing, what they comment on class blogs.
solid analysis ... Thanks for reminder
A4: As a secondary T, Im interested in this - anyone know of longitudinal studies that follow Ss into HS and beyond?
A3 It is important that homework relate to the students and their outside work.
too much HW?? :) TY for stopping by
A4: agree, reading for so many minutes a night is beneficial...not considered traditional HW that we think of
Agreed!! https://t.co/NxwC8kqzEt
A1 Not sure if HW fits in COL except as choices for S’s that are optional & are only done if S believes it will help their learning.
A4: Agree. Kids need to learn thru play. We get mad at 3rd world countries for working kids 8-13 hours. Why would we do it?
good behaviour modification for many..,,won't work long term for organic issues (like my son w gen anxiety)
A4: All levels of students need to be able to get immediate feedback while practicing - that happens in class.
Research would suggest otherwise. "“An incentive designed to clarify thinking and sharpen creativity . . .
so many of my HS seniors don't have great study/time management - perhaps something we've been neglecting
hard to stand my ground agnst what "everyone else" does, but then again it isn't when I know what's best for kids!
A4 Agree. Most Ss don't have support at home if they struggle; leads to frustration and angst toward school. Hinders > Helps
Exactly! https://t.co/QhpDxu0ipb
A4: Agree. Kids need to learn thru play. We get mad at 3rd world countries for working kids 8-13 hours. Why would we do it?
A4: I am sure that some Ss love homework and benefit from it (I did) and some do not. The values are averages, yes?
A4: Hard to dispute that data. I think we need to def. reevaluate what HW looks like at all levels.
A3: try to create an atmosphere of acceptance and desire of T learning from Ss. I want to know what they discovered.
Assign some good reading time!
https://t.co/rPMPEZQ7Mj
A4: agree, reading for so many minutes a night is beneficial...not considered traditional HW that we think of
A4 I think when we let go of the traditional homework practices and start creating experiences for Ss we will see a higher impact.
Ts sometimes complain about doing extra work at a parents request but we nightly ask parents to do extra work at our request.HWK 😁
. . ended up clouding thinking and dulling creativity. Why? Rewards, by their very nature, narrow our focus.” (Drive 44)
A4: Don't disagree with the research, but some practice at home seems valuable.
Love to hear my 1st grade daughter read!
Absolutely, but I wonder if it's a Q we're neglecting in the convo about HW
IMO- the younger the student the more immediate the feedback https://t.co/L64kKXC3s2
A4: All levels of students need to be able to get immediate feedback while practicing - that happens in class.
A4 For a lot of Ss it is a neg. impact bc they're at school learning all day & would like to come home, be with family, & play.
I teach 2 AP classes in one year. I assign HW. There is no way around it, but it always has a purpose.
If Ss do not understand the material why give it 4 homework and if Ss understand the material why give homework?
Discovery is key!!! Learning should be like Epcot Center...well I mean Disney! https://t.co/hv8OqcMfZz
A3: try to create an atmosphere of acceptance and desire of T learning from Ss. I want to know what they discovered.
. Which subject T is in charge of study skills / time mgmt? All? It's a tragedy of the commons of sorts.
A4: Fatigue can set in if work at home is excessive. K is the new 1st grade and so on... And it is full time, not like old days
I agree. Hopefully with them getting in the habit of reading, the love for it will begin 2 grow.
A4:Because the love of learningSs come with is negated by activities that are mainly task oriented.Learning become futile, not fun!
A4 I would agree 100%. Ss should practice reading, the rest of instruction should be done in class...IMO
Great point! This also creates a lack of motivation.
A4: need opin from the elem pros, but as a parent, have ?s. Connection is tough to make, but if my child is excited about it=great
GREAT point here! Well said.
Too often homework is a way to continue teaching, with limited emphasis on learning. Be intentional and purposeful.
I think you've hit the nail on the head - seems like something to do in an advisory pd? Worth making time
. My seniors range from being horrible at these skills to being better at them than am I. T'ing to middle?
How would elimination of traditional homework practices impact everyday instruction? Would it increase experiences?
maybe it's time to encourage them to teach to e/o
KaBoom! https://t.co/lAZKrLIPZw
If Ss do not understand the material why give it 4 homework and if Ss understand the material why give homework?
Exactly. https://t.co/7jD9FVKGXW
If Ss do not understand the material why give it 4 homework and if Ss understand the material why give homework?
A4 Agree. I see more Ss and Ps banging their head against the HW societal wall than being inspired. Fixed v Growth.
Valid point. Schools need to reflect on how to implement HW. There is no one-size fits all solution.
A4: This is the Elem. Level we are referring to...
So true! Feedback is critical for all learners! https://t.co/HZxQjJwqbC
A4: All levels of students need to be able to get immediate feedback while practicing - that happens in class.
A4: Not sure how you can disagree with Hattie. Need to have an open mind and try new things.
Skills that aren't subject-specific tend to fall by the wayside in HS what with all the silos.
Q5 Has technology changed your HW assignments? Why or Why not?
in a perfect world, I generally don't like rewards as motivators for those reasons. Any other suggestions?
Hattie says .01 effect size for HW in primary grades https://t.co/9ADQBXjraW
A4: Not sure how you can disagree with Hattie. Need to have an open mind and try new things.
Advisory in MS probably addresses these skills, in HS advisory is more like a time to give out paperwork.
Yep! And it's the Ss who suffer - maybe we're looking at the HW debate from entirely the wrong angle
A4: agree. To many families to busy for hrs. Of hw. 2 parents work and stress over the top. Hw adds to pressure filled situations
A4 The only HW impact I have seen on S performance is reading with someone 30 minutes every night
RT Q5 Has technology changed your HW assignments? Why or Why not?
what does that look like?
A4: What if more parents had the ability to engage children in conversations to support learning. Would HW be as necessary then?
A5: Tech has promoted more meaningful HW - student interaction even beyond the classroom
In a full implementation of HW becomes just "work." We are allowed to change the name! https://t.co/KSKCGm0DrQ
If you do it at home its homework. The key is meaningful? Ss must have access to wifi at home for blended to work. https://t.co/onmpiYIEtZ
We don't even have one - a 10 min homeroom for announcements, but that's all
A5 yes and no....HW looks the same but the ability to deliver it and support learner and parents has changed with Tech.
A5: Love seeing HW where students are collaborating through blogs and/or discussion boards. https://t.co/x8LmIhcsp6
Q5 Has technology changed your HW assignments? Why or Why not?
plus, the reward for reading every night isn't designed to sharpen their thinking, etc.
A5: Ability to connect w other Ss (keep in mind only if kids have tech). Be careful!
Sad that "learning how to learn" is an afterthought or "just expected" in many schools. https://t.co/183wfsCXaM
Advisory in MS probably addresses these skills, in HS advisory is more like a time to give out paperwork.
It's a favorite of mine, AND of theirs
A5: Yes! Access to reading-RAZ kids, Epic, Kindle! Inquiry based learning, searching, scavenger hunts. Connecting to others!
A5: Using tech can allow fast feedback even if we're not F2F.
Boom! We need to rethink the purpose of HW, differentiate it, but not get rid of it entirely. https://t.co/n0jjlptGTp
I've done a lot more process modeling/practice this year, especially with spreadsheets. Ss appreciate it.
never thought about it that way. Have some AP/IB HS Ss and what you say makes sense. Also doing Ex-cur. learning
Yes! When we cultivate curiosity within our students their passion spills over outside of school. Passion driven.
I offer a special extra help period just designated for time management/study skills
A5 A phone with a camera has given limitless opportunity for students to demonstrate learning in and out of school.
YES! RAZ kids a great tool in Early Ed.
A5: Absolutely? Flipping...
We should all jump off Twitter and go plan some "learning how to learn" activities right now! https://t.co/x9wSbfwoPC
Sad that "learning how to learn" is an afterthought or "just expected" in many schools. https://t.co/183wfsCXaM
Advisory in MS probably addresses these skills, in HS advisory is more like a time to give out paperwork.
A5: Tech can enhance creativity and expands connections beyond the immediate circle of friends/family and great for feedback
A5: Does this enlarge the opp gap?Lots of my students choose to do music tech things and send to me. Feel bad for Ss that can't
A5: Like support at home, tech is inequitable but more tangible for some to see. Besides reading at home hard to expl purpose of HW
A5: Tech can provide an engaging way for students to practice away from school.
A5: yes. Research. Interest of Ss is up etc
These skills are assumed to develop during classes and we have a support team for Ss who need more.
peeps, there aren't enough hours in my day, and it's past my bedtime. You should join us at 5:30 am for . See you next time!
Don’t all teachers have responsibility of helping all S's to become independent lifelong LEARNERS? Thus self ass’t.
I learn each week from the fine ppl on - many resources to be read and used!
A5: Tech has made it easier for Ss to work collaboratively on assignments.
That lack of tech at home is a tight rope. Walk very carefully. I would never think of it. Poverty even getting to a library no way
Access, Equity, and Student Voice - Great Point

A5: Does this enlarge the opp gap?Lots of my students choose to do music tech things and send to me. Feel bad for Ss that can't
A5 Tech has given extra avenues to give/gather info for HW. Creation/Sharing is possible. I still see Tech NOT decreasing the gap.
A5 the tech allows Ss to do a lot of amazing things, but most of the time those aren't the things assigned as HW.
Ask students to relate things to their passion and differentiate the experiences based on life style and culture.
A5: Yes, because we now have a class hashtag , all Ss have Youtube channels w/ videos, and blog entries for reflection.
Are we giving choices for purposeful practice?
Read, explore, create, use tech...
A5: Technology allows me to support Ss at home by providing resources to study & practice. Unfortunately many Ss don't have access.
A5: Has tech allowed you to understand better where your Ss are in their learning? Thus assigning purposeful HW??
I have been chatting with for over a year, so I know of which you speak. Not fussy on being singled out as bad is all.
Its abt purpose behind it. Think about a modified 50/50 traditional and flipped classroom. HS kids need to be kids.
Let's ditch this idea of "purposeful" hw, who thinks they assign busywork.
isn't HW too often the catch-all for what we want Ss to do/finish/be/become/practice/self-assess/value/etc. We aren't consistent.
Ss can engage online in google drive & collaborate 24/7. Social media can also be a gr8 tool for learning! Tweet with an expert!
A5 tech such as Raz Kids & has changed my classroom HW dynamic. Kids are engaged and can view lessons at home.
Q6 What is one question you have regarding HW?
A5: Ss get more info with tech at fingertips in general. My Ss incredibly informed walking into HS soc st class. They teach me!
Would like to believe this is true and all Ts take on the responsibility but unsure about the reality. https://t.co/pHnI99jpUt
Don’t all teachers have responsibility of helping all S's to become independent lifelong LEARNERS? Thus self ass’t.
Very tricky & 1 of our biggest challenges. Want to forge ahead, but don't want to leave anybody behind. https://t.co/q4nnMMFDiV
That lack of tech at home is a tight rope. Walk very carefully. I would never think of it. Poverty even getting to a library no way
I actually think some Ts might not call it "busywork" but do believe in assigning just to assign
A5: Social media makes it easier to communicate with students AS they complete hw.
Love it. That's when learning is powerful. If we relate new learning to our existing schema we've got it.Need more of this
. Yes, I can read S's blogs and know their learning better than a quiz or test would ever reveal & they are fun to read
Great point! The opportunity gap limits experiences for students when they leave school.
Just like we're doing now! Good modeling!
Having hw as a category on the lesson plan is pervasive. But what happens when we change our mindset? https://t.co/3YATdhTGcm
I actually think some Ts might not call it "busywork" but do believe in assigning just to assign
RT Q6 What is one question you have regarding HW?
I have seen ALOT of busy work over the last 20 years...as a teacher/admin/parent- still occurs in 2016!
RT
Q6 What is one question you have regarding HW?
A5 technology helps organize, collaborate, communication, & enhance presentation, also inhibit w/o guidance, alternatives & access
A5 follow-up - access to technology is an equity issue that somewhat complicates things...
I lean toward no HW or small chunks of purposeful practice... slightly increasing time as we climb K-12.
many stuck in the old ways not doing any of this in elem. Schools sad fact of american education for many
A6: Blurred lines are the tough one for me. Home vs. school does not exist in a digital connected world.
A6 Where was the question about HW as part of grades?
A6 I wonder how many of our Ss and Ps fight about doing their HW? I bet it is a lot more than we think.
A5: Tech makes it easy to help Ss remember class content by posting notes, reminders, etc. Not sure I'm supporting all Ss equally
YES! All about changing mindsets!
A6:Would like to know the effect size for specific types of homework by grade level and subject.
Maybe everyone here just agrees that it's a silly idea :)
always comes back to the question: am I creating a culture of learning?
... No one wants to admit, but I'll go on limb. Rote memorization, etc. qualifies so ... (Gasp) guilty.
A6: Who supports the HW-work done at home? Is it the parent? Are they in your class too? Or is it the parent working 3 jobs?
A6 Why do we as educators give students homework that never gets checked or given feedback.
vs a Culture of Compliance! https://t.co/QXQeMIn7kc
always comes back to the question: am I creating a culture of learning?
Agreed - How meaningful is the homework we are assigning? https://t.co/jm8C99w7Sk
A6:Would like to know the effect size for specific types of homework by grade level and subject.
A6: What is the nat'l average of time spent on HW in grades 9-12? What about for the Ss who don't learn short cuts?
Good question!
Answer: Knock it off!
https://t.co/onlwSMOpHV
A6 Why do we as educators give students homework that never gets checked or given feedback.
A6: How often should we be giving homework? I only give homework twice a week, maybe three.
A6: What does one tell a "traditional" peer who wants to assign and grade homework?
And how do we count that time? Ss self-reporting? Ps reporting? Ts reporting?
It allowed me to customize any HW they choose and communicate w Ss safely (district ways)after hours. https://t.co/oRDVJshI5k
Q5 Has technology changed your HW assignments? Why or Why not?
A6-Reflection on all homework. Does it hinder curiosity and passion?
A6 Should homework count towards final grade, or be a chance to practice and learn from mistakes like some college classes?
John Hattie and Harris Cooper have done studies. As HW is self-reported, data may not always be reliable. https://t.co/cUO6fYFWic
A6:Would like to know the effect size for specific types of homework by grade level and subject.
2/2 besides all of the things I've already tried?
What is the purpose of HW? Most is practice so to be effective needs feedback not scores so no data for grades.
A6 How can we create "HW" that connects parents/students?
A6: is this hw relevant and necessary? I ask myself all week. If the answer is no or maybe not..don't assign.
Agreed! The feedback part is vital too-targeted, specific, purposeful, and timely. https://t.co/KqCF1hp60N
A6 Why do we as educators give students homework that never gets checked or given feedback.
A6 if let's say the data does show HW not beneficial for any grade below HS, how do we go about change? Where first?
Is it okay to assign homework weekly and not daily?
by grade level and subject? I only know of primary/secondary. Something like .1 and .6 respectively
A6 ElemTs, do you have Ps who think you don't give enough? I've been told I have rep of not giving much HW, like its a bad thing.
A6: To my children's (future) teachers:"What makes you believe this assignment is more important than our family's evening plans?"
But if it's not graded they won't do it.
A6: HW is given as need dictates and as class discussions occur. Many intense convos have garnered impromptu research and HW.
A6: Is homework a measure of student progress? What do you think?
. It is actually one of two, and there would be three but I have yet to build the third! Work in progress always!
No, homework should not count toward a grade. We should have asked that very important practice. https://t.co/mHmYU5lQR5
A6 Should homework count towards final grade, or be a chance to practice and learn from mistakes like some college classes?
A6 Is HW something that impacts student grade or is it just used to measure growth and knowledge? (It shouldn't impact Ss grade)
Q7 TAKE ACTION: Name one action you will take to create a COL in regards to HW.
Ya'll are killing me. GRADE practice? Does the football coach grade practice?
How cool would be if the homework was related to your family's plans.
A6 HW like any formative data in the classroom shouldn't be major part of the grade--if you learn it first or last you learned it.
Hattie 0 at elem, .29 overall, and I think 0.5 at secondary.
No, except in the case of...No - Never! https://t.co/ISEhmVrcWy
No, homework should not count toward a grade. We should have asked that very important practice. https://t.co/mHmYU5lQR5
A6 Should homework count towards final grade, or be a chance to practice and learn from mistakes like some college classes?
Not true as many teachers on and will attest. If relevant and engaging students will do it. https://t.co/bBLoVSFF55
But if it's not graded they won't do it.
It starts with the leaders. They need to allow Ts the freedom to run their classes. https://t.co/1Dg4qifyxH
A6 if let's say the data does show HW not beneficial for any grade below HS, how do we go about change? Where first?
RT
Q7 TAKE ACTION: Name one action you will take to create a COL in regards to HW.
I think it shouldn't be counted as a grade but should measure growth and promote risk and different experiences.
Start with yourself, your team, your grade. https://t.co/abxMOlR2wZ
A6 if let's say the data does show HW not beneficial for any grade below HS, how do we go about change? Where first?
A6: how to meet challenge of meeting expectations w standards & learning wo giving up great class activities? Reality check
A7 Start the conversation. Have data to support opinion. Fierce conversation. It's a big change. Be kind.
totally do have Ps like that. That's when I show the data & research & explain I don't believe in HW for HW's sake.
I have had that expressed to me a few times. I also have SS beg for it! :)
If more teachers would engage in professional learning via Twitter they might realize this (and so much more).
My Ss sometimes blend family trips with biology, getting cool photos of species such as African Wild Dogs!
key point here that changes convo
A7 Challenge the dominant narrative that more = better
A7: I will participate in Ss discussion boards this week - foster real communication and reflection b/w Ss by modeling
All HW is "graded" to check growth and knowledge. Why wouldn't we check Ss work?
A7: I am going to pay more attention to he HW being assigned in my school - have conversations about purpose and intent.
Love this! Keep up the good work!
Can the great activities simultaneously promote learning and tie back to the standards?
A7: nothing more given than i want my own kids to have. Create an atmosphere in classroom of discovery of importance of knowledge
A7 a strong community knows why it does things - communicating rationale for "work at home" is invaluable.
A7: When talking to Ss, Ps, colleagues, focus on learning. Redirect conversation back to learning. HW won't stay on that topic.
seems so much more important that a catch-all HW policy - have guideline about purpose & intent
Love this! Please share how it goes. https://t.co/rMGIqdoT40
A7: I will participate in Ss discussion boards this week - foster real communication and reflection b/w Ss by modeling
A6: Is HW beneficial if it generates family dialogue...if the assignment seeks responses or feedback from family?
A7Make it solidly a choice, any HW Ss done stems from their excitement to get on with the learning. https://t.co/YiWSBIUh6z
RT
Q7 TAKE ACTION: Name one action you will take to create a COL in regards to HW.
Absolutely. HW is always "graded" to check knowledge and growth, but isn't a summitive assessment to check skill.
HW should get descriptive feedback not scores. Nobody ever learned to get better from getting 7/10.
Meaningful & fun, whille engaging the whole family. Very cool! https://t.co/xh590Ll3ea
My Ss sometimes blend family trips with biology, getting cool photos of species such as African Wild Dogs!
it's amazing (but not surprising) what happens when students find reading they want to do and not a 'have to do'
That is how I assign it. I try to use approach to reach about the life skill of time management.
well-said! It is so important to tap into discovery, creativity, and innovation with Ss.
A7: Voxer, chatting with . Already starting kindergarten coding process-floors. Thanks to and
A7 Start the conversation with our staff about the "why" behind homework. Come up with a common vision for homework as a school.
Ss came up with it themselves, and knew that because we are in a together it would be fine with me!
Some great conversations tonight!
Build your - follow your fellow friends!
Build the learning culture!
I think it is interesting, I really haven't seen anyone in favor of HW, at least not the amount that goes home at the k-12 level
Thank you for an interesting, insightful, challenging conversation tonight - I really value my
Another great . Thanks MI mods. Go Duke - and the Spartans.
I understand there has been research about HW. But we must consider variables. What kind of HW, what is the culture of classroom?
Sometimes HW discussion is out of context and school culture, nice to hear all of you and see HW hard to define and be questioned
Grading of HW used to dispel misconception about concepts and to ensure growth is taking place. Feedback only.
Thank You crew and PLN - Make it a Great Week:)
Why is so much homework still given in schools then? Very interesting!
Thanks to & and all of you for joining tonight! Have a great week!
Is this homework?
Thanks for another great chat!
Make it a great week!

A7 I will assign them buckets of HW so they can see the opposite of my no HW policy! (Kidding) - will survey Ts at my school.
Do you have a for me, Ken?
Thanks for another great Monday.
thanks for hosting tonight. thank you for the good suggestions on rethinking HW.
Make it a great week! That should be everyone's homework!
great chat, ideas, & discussion thanks all
