#caedchat is for California educators, by California educators. All are welcome as moderators and participants discuss issues that emerge in California education, which are generally applicable to other regions of the United States.
Welcome to #caedchat and Happy New Year, everyone! I bet you are all gearing up for tomorrow and getting back to our regular routines. That alarm will be a shocker at 6am. :)
I'm Jo-Ann, your moderator for tonight's #caedchat. I am an instructional coach focusing on ELA in the middle schools in Escondido. I'm excited to collaborate with all of you this evening!
Hi #caedchat! I’m Melissa, an elementary principal from the SF Bay Area. When I was in the classroom, I taught MS Science and LA. Now I get to help with everything! ❤️
I taught kindergarten in Maine for 25 years. This is my second year with @go2Science and I'm here in CA seeing if this is a good fit. Eager to learn more about the ed scene here. #caedchat
Hello #caedchat from SF Bay Area. I'm a 5th grade teacher, all subjects. I'll be in & out of this chat as I am simultaneously prepping for a busy first day back tomorrow! But... Happy New Year Everyone! 🍾
I want my students to solve some problems on their own and to work together. I want them to want to come to school. I teach 6th grade and I want them to have that spark.
#caedchat
I have set up these questions so that you can respond to them whether you are an classroom teacher, coach, or admin. Feel free to reach out to me for clarification. #caedchat
A1: Although I am out of the classroom, I want Ss to be provided with experiences where they have ownership of what and how they learn, set goals and evaluate their own learning.
#CAedchat
Hey #CAEdchat Feb 6th is Global School Play Day! We know CA Ts & Ss know how to play. Join the grassroots effort to bring play back. Last yr almost 400k Ss from 50 plus nations played. Register your class for this free event @ https://t.co/mTR9jp5vbQ#GSPD2019
A1: I want to see students become self-motivated learners who have self-awareness, critical thinking skills, and persistence in the face of adversity. #caedchat
A1: My ideal vision of teaching is being a guide to help lead my Ss to discover on their own what I want them to learn. For my Ss I want them to want to learn, to be inquisitive, to question, to think for themselves. #caedchat
A1 I want my students to achieve more than they thought they could, feel confidence, experience creativity, and feel like a valued member of the classroom. I want students to feel engaged and be thirsty for more! #saltyedu#caedchat
A1) I want students to be able to leverage resources, knowledge, and those around them to solve interesting and hopefully meaningful problems. #caedchat
A1: I want to empower student and teachers to be co-innovators as the become evidence based decision makers. In my experience PBL is an awesome way to get there. #caedchat
A1) That all classrooms and professional learning events offer a personalized education for all. Meeting the needs of EVERY learner regardless of where they're at. #caedchat
A1: I want my math students take charge of their learning. I have been trying to add activities where they are in charge of their learning but they are fighting me. #caedchat
A1: #caedchat I would like my classrooms to be student-centered with opportunities for collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and growth while maintaining a safe environment to fail forward.
A1: My ideal vision for teaching and learning in my classroom is collaboration and teamwork. I always want my student and myself working with others and helping each other. I hope my students learn from each other just as much as they learn from myself. #caedchat
A1 We're using a new (wonderful) curriculum this year, @openupresources that really promotes equity, collaboration, and communication. I want the class to want to learn and have the rich mathematical discussions that promote learning. #caedchat
A1: PBL all the way! I’d love to run independent PBL student-driven projects in the library where I serve as merely the PBL moderator and research librarian. We’d call ourselves the Curiosity Club, where knowledge becomes “curiouser and curiouser.” #caedchat
A1. I want students to experience a place where they are family and connected to adults who know their value. EACH and everyone has value! A place where #Equity discussions happen and Ss take priority over adult discomfort! #caedchat
I love this. As an instructional coach, I get to help teachers make their own goals, collaborate with them to achieve their goal, thus personalizing PD for them. I love it. #caedchat
Hi #CAedchat! I'm Shannon from Oakland, teaching humanities in 10th grade. I haven't been able to make a chat in a long while, and I really need this topic!
A1: Ensure Equity and access. Relevant. Opportunities for Ss to create and engage creatively. Overtly teach the soft skills to ensure strong social emotional development. Opportunities to explore Ss strengths. #caedchat
A1 My ideal vision for teaching and learning in the classroom is that 100% of students would be able to reteach the exact same concept in a variety of ways the very next day. A classroom that is living and active. Learning is a byproduct. #CAedchat
A1: Ideal teaching & learning starts with a community within a classroom where the children have a voice & they are a part of the decision making. An ideal teacher is part storyteller, part facilitator, part listener. An ideal learner is engaged. #caedchat
A1: I would like a classroom of problem-solvers, self-starters, collaborators, question-askers, and goal getters. I want them to always have curiosity and to always keep seeking answers to their questions - even if I can't answer them! #caedchat
A1) Learning that is self directed, provides opportunity for mastery and autonomy for students, is personalized, and is relevant/purposeful/meaningful. #caedchat
A1: I want a classroom of students who are curious, resilient, resourceful, who use critical thinking to tackle big problems, and who work together with kindness, humor and an abiding sense of "right actions." #caedchat
It's a win-win for everyone involved! Glad you see the benefits. I bet the teachers you work with truly appreciate this! It could also be as simple as providing choices. #caedchat
A1 My vision for learning in my home is to create authentic enrichment opportunities that augment the learning happening in my DD’s classroom and follows my DD’s lead. I want to foster autonomy, creativity, and kindness in the context of purposeful play. #caedchat
That’s the start but we need to help students take it a step further. I built on the acronym. Students need to learn how to reflect on experiences.
#CaEdchat
A2: My “students’ are other teachers. I believe the various modes of training, varied opportunities and levels of training I provide meet a vast array of needs. #caedchat
Q2. Wow. That is a tough question. I think my students are on the verge of being good writers. I think I am on the verge of being a good facilitator of critical thinking skills. #caedchat
Well, thank you! However, most of these ideas I could attibute to my wonderful parents who were both teachers, my Twitter #edchat friends, or to the #tlap authors that I so admire! #caedchat
A2) Our students - and all students for that matter - are super motivated to take ownership over their learning. We need to empower them and give them maximum opportunities to show what they can do while guiding, mentoring, and coaching them. #caedchat
A2: I teach an elective, Applied Library Media Studies, and even though it’s new to me this year, my Ss are on the verge of running aspects and designing original programs for the library. I am on the verge of increasing reading - circulation is already up! #caedchat
My wife is teaching our 5 year old daughter how to tie her shoes. The learning is very inauthentic; she won’t have a deep understanding of the concept because of the:
direct-teaching,
rote repetition of procedures,
regurgitating of facts,
lack of technology.....
A2: The classrooms I work with are showing amazing growth in questioning skills. I'm thrilled to see teachers encouraging productive and thoughtful questions with even the youngest learners as they grow as critical thinkers. #caedchat
A2: I want to build on my experience as a coach and an unleashed of humans to find their passions while they make life and the future amazing for Ss! #caedchat
A2: #caedchat as a school system we have been embracing more and more STEAM and PBL. Every year we get better. We continue to evolve to meet the needs of our population. I do t think we will ever “arrive”. It’s a growth journey.
I love how many of you are focusing on your students' strengths.
But also, don't be afraid to acknowledge your own strengths! You have great value and you should honor that. Don't fall for the imposter syndrome.
#caedchat
My 6th graders are really loving math right now. I don't think they loved it last year, so I am doing my best to keep them involved and changing things up. Lots of group work, games, and smiles, when I smile they have to smile! Right? I want to add self reflection
#caedchat
A2: As an organization I believe we are on the verge of embracing our coaching for all model. I now receive more positive communication about coaching than negative. #caedchat
A2 Mathematical explanation of ideas and being able to share and inspire others. Some days we're getting there, some, not so much. Work in progress. #caedchat
A2: This is a hard one. I teach technology so I'd like to say that I have classes who are getting it and even a few individuals who are excelling through what I teach them every couple of weeks. I'd like to work on my influence going beyond the time they see me though. #caedchat
A2: This year I had a focus on math and ELD. I can see the growth in the Ss confidence and skills. Ss have shown a desire to practice math and talk about it complete sentences! We are growing but need to keep the train moving when we start back up this week. #caedchat
A2) Spending this year in my Entrepreneurship class teaching students about long term goal setting. The kind that doesn’t end when the semester or year concludes. It’s a hard process for them and even for adults. #caedchat
A2: I think I am on the verge of being very confident in taking professional leaps and knowing that both my craft and Ss benefit from my leaps every time. I know that’s not an exact subject, but instead a skill that I feel has lead me to grow more than any one subject. #caedchat
A2: As an organization I believe we are on the verge of embracing our coaching for all model. I now receive more positive communication about coaching than negative. #caedchat
...though I have to say, it is so much easier for me to think about where I am struggling, and what I am not doing. Thank you for shifting the question. #caedchat
A2) Collaborating with others! I see this as essential in everything I do these days and I feel like I'm good at it...mostly because I truly believe we are #bettertogether Believe it and you'll see! Remember this my lovely former @RomolandSD crew? #caedchat
A2 We have really been working on implementing weekly acts of kindness. In 2018 I came up with the weekly ideas. In 2019 the students will take over! I have confidence will do well! #caedchat
A2 Not currently in the classroom, but last year I was really excited with how far my Sped English kiddos came with their writing skills! From barely able to write a few sentences to writing a 2 page research paper! #CAedchat
Ok all... we sat on Q1 and Q2 for quite some time. And there is a reason behind that. They directly relate to the work we are doing with Q3.
Coming right up!
#caedchat
When a teacher is told she has strengths, she can do anything. I am from a super small one school district. One class per grade. I am definitely an island.
#caedchat
Judy... I don't believe you. You have a lot of successes. It could be something small like... routines are well established. Or something big like I developed quality relationships with my class. #caedchat
Oh!!! I would love to connect. STEM and PBL are my passions!!! So much so that I created @go2Science. We provide the building blocks of classroom innovation! #caedchat
A2: After 25+ years teaching, I'd say I've gotten better & better at fostering collaboration, cooperation, & teaching as skills my students learn to use more & I use less. My students are on the verge of learning to own their own learning, especially in ELA & SCI. #caedchat
A3: My goal is to increase the amount of Ts I plan with and the amount of classrooms in which I model lessons. And improve ways Ts can access professional learning opportunities. (new modules, an LMS, etc) #caedchat
As an 18 year Science Teacher please help the young ones learn and deeply understand the particulate nature of matter (A personal feeling of mine)! #caedchat
In reply to
@Beth_Heidemann, @MelSideB, @go2Science
A3 Students will work collaborativelyand individually to study a novel, its relevance, and share their research-supported epiphany through a podcast episode. #caedchat
That is a struggle when you are the grade level team. How might you build a collaborative feeling within your site among your other grade levels? #caedchat
A3: My goal is to increase the number of invitational, curiosity based learning experiences I can provide for teachers. I want to begin with desire and work toward classroom practice excellence from that springboard. #caedchat
A3: My goal would be to be able to allow my Ss to lead some portions of class as the T. I want them to be able teach each other and learn as a collaborative group. #caedchat
As 6th graders we have 1st grade reading buddies, I have been thinking about doing something more with the 1st graders, blogging, writing????? Not sure, but I'm thinking.
#caedchat
A3: My goal is to spend more time supporting my Ss emotional needs. It is hard to learn when emotional needs are not addressed. In order to help my Ss succeed I need to support them. Through coaching I think I can help them problem solve and persevere in the classroom. #caedchat
It's been amazing to team up with subject area experts in @go2Science. Even though I received great accolades for being an exemplary science teacher, I'm really just an expert at thinking like a five year old. Thanks so much for this feedback! #caedchat
In reply to
@DKriedeman, @MelSideB, @go2Science, @go2Science
A3) One of my goals is to work together with my staff to further develop what 21st century learning can look like in a personalized manner for both students and faculty #caedchat
A3. My goal is to differentiate my writing instruction more, and to provide multiple entry points to critical thinking based writing assignments. #caedchat
Q3 Starting the 2019 year with "What Lights You Up" @Catlin_Tucker and working really hard to bring the Ss passions into our learning everyday. #caedchat
Do it! My kindergartner just developed his own Google Site about his recent London adventure using mostly the voice typing feature of his chrome book! They are for sure capable! #caedchat
A3: have been sketchnoting and blogging w/Ss for last 3 years or so and have not started yet..have been encouraged to start a challenge w/both #goals#caedchat
A3: My goal is to continue to help develop unit plans for #cangss, work through lessons, and find ways to tie it to my writers workshop and classroom PBL/Design Thinking projects in my classroom Makerspace #caedchat
Before I moved to teaching 5th grade a few years ago, I taught middle school, mostly 6th, for almost 20 years. So, if you need an experienced teacher to bounce ideas for units or strategies off of, I'm on Twitter... daily! Write anytime! #caedchat
Q3: My goal is to build greater trust between Ts and district administrators by engaging in individual convos with Ts and collaborative exchanges of ideas using a new too called. @thoughtxchng#caedchat
I also want students to own their own education, and make decisions, goals and reflections based upon this -- this is a lifelong goal -- but I am not sure this is strength based at this point. #caedchat
A4: Weekly tech tips, varied course offerings, a calendar full of appointments with Ts or in their classrooms, Ts tweeting about what their classes are doing, participation in our district wide #Flipgrids. #biggoals#iamadreamer#CAedchat
A3: I would like to see 200 new CA PreK-2 classrooms using @go2Science by the end of the school year. I hope some of you can help me get the word out an empower Ts to make the world a better place once curious mind at a time. I know it works. Time to grow! <3 #caedchat
A3 Students share ideas and justify their reasoning using mathematical language. Students have these discussions daily whole class and in partners, and are motivated to do so (and enjoy them!) #caedchat
A3) My goal is to build my PLN by collaborating and communicating through various different channels outside of Twitter. Perhaps blog more this year too. I often feel like writing but never get around to it! #caedchat
A3: Increase student interest in independent reading and research by making staff’s own independent reading and research visible (and Ss as well) in order to create a culture & community where reading & research is just what we do! #caedchat
A4: My “look for”s for emotional support are: growth mindset language from T and Ss, restorative circles, team meetings, group work, Ss talking, critical thinking, problem solving, KINDNESS #caedchat
A3 Within the context of meaningful play at home, my DD will graciously participate in a project proposed by someone else using self-talk strategies being implemented in @nikiglah’s classroom.
#CAedchat
A4: Ss can talk about what at least one staff member is reading and/or researching. Staff can do the same for other staff. Eventually staff will be able to say the same thing about Ss reading and research (beyond what is assigned). #caedchat
OH MY! California small is Maine big! I was the only kindergarten teacher in the only school in my town! Class size was usually about 15 but ranged from 4 to 20! #caedchat
In reply to
@christyn_a, @littlemacf650, @AppEducationFox
A4 Look fors for my goal:
-Listening to Ts
-Focusing on the strengths
-Verbalizing the strengths
-Going the pace of the teacher
-Reminding Ts it is ok to focus in student strengths
-Ask reflective questions
-Promote creative problem solving
#caedchat
I want to be in that classroom right now! I appreciate your focus on emotional support. The relationships built during all of what you suggested is guaranteed to be priceless! #caedchat
A4. People should look for flexible groupings with mini-lessons happening. They should look for students knowing and understanding the type of writing they are doing, their audience, and the specific skills they are working on -- each students' skill different. #caedchat
Can I have 3 strength based goals? 1. Student led reading groups (needs based, not leveled), 2. Add more #PBL to the science curriculum, & 3. Revive choice based center work (which I did my first years in 5th, but this class needed to learn how to work independently). #caedchat
They should also see writing that tackles important issues, and is not merely summary or informational. They should look for writing assignments that help in understanding complex issues. #caedchat
A4: #caedchat an engaged and supportive admin. Ts modeling their strengths in other classes regardless of grade level. Support so Ts can visit other schools and get their own grade level fix. That steady hum in the class that comes from engaged learning and collaboration.
A4: Who is doing most of the talking? Who seems to be leading discussion? What are Ss doing? What is the T doing? Are the Ss in small groups where they are teaching each other? #caedchat
My goal is to connect my students globally, with a purpose. Not sure how we are going to do this, but thinking. I want to connect my class with other classes, collaborate on a project, like I said at my school we are the only 6th grade class.
#caedchat
A4: A decrease in the amount of times I hear “why don’t they”. An increase in the number of times I hear “Thank you for listening” An increase in the presumption of positive intent across the district. #caedchat
They do! I do a lot of that -- but sometimes I think that simplifies some complex issues, you know? I am focusing on climate change, so I want kids to address the complexity, not argue for the sake of proving their claim....#caedchat
A5: This is basically my goal for yearly goals and objectives. I would like something more tangible/visible, but I can’t force myself into classrooms. I am considering office hours at various sites....when they see me, Ts always have a question. #getawayfromdesk#caedchat
Thanks for the comment. Even when the team isn't in sync it can make for interesting conversations...especially when the team is ready for difficult conversations for the sake of Ss #caedchat#collectiveteacherefficacymatters

A5: My goal directly supports the goal that my principal wrote as part of our SPSA and Title 1 funding, so my site admin is essential (even if we differ on how to achieve increased independent reading and research). #caedchat
A4: Look fors: student leadership, engaged, collaborative talk, design thinking, flexible grouping, at times students scattered around the room doing different tasks with other students in an organized, living community. #caedchat
I don't really have an office. I move site to site and set up wherever I can... sometimes the lounge or a shared work space. I spend two days at each site which gets me to each site every 3 weeks (I work with 6 sites). #caedchat
A5 My principal (since he's observing me this year anyway), my teaching partner, my math coach. I've actually started these conversations already #caedchat
A5 One of my bosses is in the chat right now ;) so I shared with her... and I will share with my coaching team and each teacher I work with. Hopefully they can all hold me accountable. #caedchat
My goal is to get as many students involved with local government this year as possible. I will share this goal with everyone around my organization and beyond. #caedchat
A5: Not sure. My team does not really help each other with goals. So maybe my principal when she returns from maternity leave. Maybe find a teacher that would help keep me accountable for the goal. #caedchat
A5: I am going to be brave and communicate my desire with all of our employees. It is a scary thing to do when you are a soft hearted leader. #loveistheanswer#caedchat
a5) Let's see... @KVoge71 so she can remind me of my goal :) ? Let's read each others at the end of each week and nudge when we don't see it!..also my #caedchat and #IACUE PLN will pull me along for sure!
A4: Look for happy faces, engaged learners, and maybe a few messes! You'll also see some amazing writing and data analysis...and a life sized kangaroo poster! #caedchat
was interested in hearing about this tonight, is it/how is it different from our latest growth mindset philosophy? It has always sounded reasonable #caedchat
Exactly! So many amazing educators are crushed and broken throughout our system! Let’s LOVE and HONOR one another so we can truly meet the need of ALL Ss. Once people are valued we can support each other to look deeply at the #Equity issues affecting Ss and adults! #caedchat
In reply to
@MelSideB, @scmaestra, @AppEducationFox
Yes, we've done a few Mystery Hangouts, but I'd like to connect a little deeper with another classroom. Read a book. I helped to create this a few years ago with teachers I had never met.
https://t.co/8mqYFqkVoe#caedchat
A5: Who do I share my goals with? My partner teacher, my mentor, & my family (since their the ones who have to put up with my taking over the kitchen table routinely & who get to listen to me struggle over my lesson planning choices!) There's never enough time! #caedchat
A6: I need to have a Google Form for my teachers to fill in. At the moment, it is mostly anecdotal evidence. And the sweet thank you notes/emails I get :) Seriously, I keep a file of them. #caedchat
A6) Since I work with adults, I think that every professional learning event I deliver should end with a survey for feedback... It will help me to grow as an educator! #caedchat#don'tbeafraidoffeedback
A6: I hold a team meeting every Friday. This would be the best setting to discuss progress toward the goal. I know that I have used google forms like a drop box to share goals the class could work on. I might have to do that to help the class set goals for 2019. #caedchat
A6: I believe the library belongs to Ss, I plan to implement more ways for me to receive S feedback. When I applied for the position last year, I asked my Ss (10th ELA) to identify a problem that exists in the library & how it could be solved. I got so many good ideas! #caedchat
Exactly! So many amazing educators are crushed and broken throughout our system! Let’s LOVE and HONOR one another so we can truly meet the need of ALL Ss. Once people are valued we can support each other to look deeply at the #Equity issues affecting Ss and adults! #caedchat

@MelSideB, @scmaestra, @AppEducationFox
I have done that before! We met through Twitter, chose a book to read at the same time and set up discussion Qs and games to play. One was Mystery Tableau. The kids formed a tableau and the other class had to determine what scene, then discuss signif of that scene #caedchat
A6: conversations with Ss and also being mindful and present along the way to make sure to catch moments in time that Ss are benefittig from my goal and are showing it in their independent work. #caedchat
A6) In as many ways as possible. Our students are the most important people in the school. If we build the foundation of our schools with mutual trust and respect, students naturally are part of discussion #caedchat
Got to go. Duty calls! Great chat. Always is with #caedchat Thanks @AppEducationFox and everyone that inspired me tonight! That article was a good Sunday read!
A7 Students will show improvement in their written problem explanations that is mirroring their conversations. It should also help with their understanding. #caedchat
A7 I think I made a pretty BIG goal... I will know if I have met this goal after each learning cycle I have with a teacher. If a teacher feels empowered by the cycle, then I know I met my goal. #caedchat
A6) In as many ways as possible. Our students are the most important people in the school. If we build the foundation of our schools with mutual trust and respect, students naturally are part of discussion #caedchat
A7: That is the tough part about being a TOSA. You really don’t have clear cut #s indicating success.(other than PD evals) I serve 1200 Ts, 25,000 Ss & 1000+ classified. I would love to know if Ts feel skills grew during the year. They don’t need/want another survey. #caedchat
A7: I know this is a no-no in the world of SMART goals, but I feel certain I will never "meet" my goals. I will edge closer to them, but meet? Nah. Not until all my students are award winning authors. :) #caedchat
A7: I will know if I am learning from my Ss more than telling them what to know. I have already planed for Ss to have more of a lead as we learn about the American Revolution. #caedchat
A6 I am going to have to sit down and really think about my goal. If i write it down it will be more tangible. Maybe I can share it with the teacher next door? Not sure...my husband?
#caedchat
A7: when I look around and find instructional segment inquiry covering my walls while Ss are building, writing, and forming connections to bring it all together #caedchat
I feel the same way about my goal. I may need to do some work to chop my goal up into smaller increments so I can see myself edging nearer to my ideal vision for my work. #caedchat
But I will be looking at pre- and post- writing, AND having students look at their writing goals, and assess and find evidence of their growth, and where they still need to go. #caedchat
A7: I will know I have met my goal when... Ss problem solve social issues on their own, seek me out for help instead of tattling, Ss stand up for students in need, Ss can explain their feelings with their words. #caedchat
A6: We routinely solicit feedback from all of our classes. K-2 student writing and drawings give me some of the best insight about how we're doing. The questions they ask during livestreams are also very illuminating! #caedchat
A7: As long as I've promoted student leadership & I've given them opportunities to take the lead & teach (in any of my 3 goals) then I will feel I have met this goal. When I can stand back, & watch my student-led classroom, even if just for an hour here & there! #caedchat
Be sure to follow some new educators from tonight’s chat AND use the #caedchat hashtag all week long to share resources, ideas, and questions! Continue the discussion!
