It's time, #ohedchat friends! Let's chat about "A New Year, A New You"!
Matt here, #DitchBook / #DitchHW author, speaker, career Spanish teacher. Glad to join you.
Please check in!
@bobby__dodd I am going to try to join the #ohedchat tonight from @SouthwestAir about 39,000 ft above the ground. Heading your way...landing in Columbus in 4 hours!
Tonight we will use Q1, Q2, etc for our Questions. Remember to respond according to question w/ A1, A2, etc. Always use #ohedchat in your tweets to share the PD in the thread
Hey, #ohedchat! Dru, proud @HeritageMS_WCS principal joining up w/ the tweet up 2nite from tropical Westerville, OH! Representing all Heritage Huskies and the marvelous middle grades in @WCSOH#WeRHeritage#HuskyStrong
A1 . Not so much a new start for me, but an opportunity to recalibrate intentions to continue the year strong and striving to be awesome very day.
#ohedchat
A1: It’s like halftime of a game — time to reflect, what worked, what didn’t and opportunity for adjustments. Not a new year, but new opportunities! #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1: At semester, I always solicit end-of-year feedback from Ss. So I can adjust to their wants/needs/ideas in the 2nd semester. It's always time to grow as a T!
We did 3x5 schedule when I was in high school, so it was an odd "in the middle of a semester" breaking time. Your schedule sounds much better! #ohedchat
A1: It’s like halftime of a game — time to reflect, what worked, what didn’t and opportunity for adjustments. Not a new year, but new opportunities! #ohedchat
A1: Smack dab in the middle of the second trimester, but having a few weeks to refresh and reload is welcome. The last few months feel like an exhibition now #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1 Right away! Planning upcoming PDs for my Elementary Ts and working to get a collaboration over the American Revolution our 8th Grade and a class in Iowa.
A1- The break offers time to reflect, relax, plan, and grow. The return to school provides an opportunity to implement new ideas and procedures in a "fresh" setting. #ohedchat
A1: January is like half time. Reflect. Adjust. Make small moves, write down my game plan for the next time. Survive til summer, then crush it. #ohedchat
I make it part of an "entry ticket" to the semester exam. Also, I ask them to reflect on an "a-ha" moment of theirs when they learned something that was giving them trouble. #ohedchat
A1. It is just as an equal opportunity as the first day of the school year. New courses, new goals and renewed relationships. Great chance to hit the reset button if needed. Or, keep moving ahead! #ohedchat
For me, it's a time of reflection and a reset on focus, goals, and growth. (As educators, we have the school yr starts, calendar yrs, & birthdays as "new start" opps!) #ohedchat
For me, it's a time of reflection and a reset on focus, goals, and growth. (As educators, we have the school yr starts, calendar yrs, & birthdays as "new start" opps!) #ohedchat
I do a Google survey at the end of the semester as a barometer, to make mid year changes based on Ss suggestions. Reflection & reading time helps me make a new start. Keep what works, & finesse to create better, not just because it's new! #ohedchat
I do a Google survey at the end of the semester as a barometer, to make mid year changes based on Ss suggestions. Reflection & reading time helps me make a new start. Keep what works, & finesse to create better, not just because it's new! #ohedchat
Usually there is a great idea I think of 1 month into school I should have rolled out in August, but I save it for January so as not to confuse students #ohedchat
A1: I see the break as a time to reflect. This allows for January to feel like a time for opportunity, growth, and change. It brings about a renewal of focus. #ohedchat
What a great idea! Surveying the kids can be scary but I always found I learned the most this way. Often I was pleasantly surprised! We did the same as an administrative team with our staff! It provided great feedback! #ohedchat
❤️❤️❤️I knowwwww right! Some of my students have never seen snow before! Can you believe it! We kinda take it for granted! It was AWEsome! ❄️☃️❄️ #OhEdChat
A1. This time of year makes me reflect on the decisions I've made 4 first semester & consider what's gone well, what hasn't gone well, & what's possible 4 the bright road ahead. Feelings of elation & deflation at the same time, but proud about the journey #ohedchat
A2: Ideas that do not create more work for Ss & Ts. One example is the extra Personal Day drawing for staff. Idea from @Joe_Sanfelippo & @TonySinanis in #HackingLeadership book. High impact, no work added on for anyone #ohedchat
A2: going for it! I used to think 🤔 and plan 📝 a lot, but doing is where it’s really at! Role modeling this has worked really well with other Ts and then all the Ss too! #ohedchat
A2: I made the change from teacher-led instruction to student-driven learning and what a change it was! Who better to drive their learning then the students themselves?! #ohedchat
A2: went to a lot more project based learning as a former CBI and social studies teacher. Repeating facts is boring. Have the kids create me something be it a song, paper, video, etc & kids get excited because they own the work & its on them to show up & show out.
#ohedchat
A2: Stop caring about test scores. We live by #FutureReady not #StandardizedTestReady. When you change the value you place on that test, you can get to the WHY of your school #ohedchat
#ohedchat A2 The power of @Google and the Chromebook! Moving from a T who delivered all the information to a facilitator who puts the Ss in charge of learning and collaborating with each other. @1988project has done a great job of doing this in his classroom!
A2- providing for needs creates an atmosphere of empathy which has improved Ss involvement and willingness to step out of their pre-conceived notions of what they can do. #ohedchat
A2- January is a great time to reaffirm, build, and repair relationships with kids. Telling them you missed them and are happy to see them can bridge a divide. I used #oneword last year in Jan, and the kids responded well to the attempt to connect! #ohedchat
A2: Instructional Strategies, PLCs, Formative Assessment, Learning Space, and Blended Learning - Educators Should Ask, “What will happen if this change does not occur?” #ohedchat
A2: Ideas that can change culture & are easily communicated. Read an @ASCD article about a school who had wi-fi stickers for businesses so Ss knew what businesses had wi-fi for their devices. Created stickers & gave the to businesses #ohedchat
A2: I've done away with assigned seating at this point in the year. It does depend on the class(es), and we still have a seating chart for when subs are there, but when I've done it, it's usually worked well. #ohedchat
A2 one change was to tracking college/career readiness for my 8th graders this year. Created a google form for Ss to fill out prior to local career fair and trip to career center. This will give me info for individual meetings w/ Ss. #ohedchat
A2: I stopped sending home worksheets for homework. Now I just send home stories/books to read. Students don't have me nagging them for work that wasn't meaningful. #ohedchat
A2 Changing my attitude to be positive and Happy. The effect on my students was beyond beneficial to the learning environment and led to fewer behavior problems. #ohedchat
A2: Assuming we're not just talking about mid-year? Everything. Implemented SBG, metacognition, spiraled homework and assessments, team-cooperation and team-competition. Ss love almost all changes. For spiraled hmwk, required more salesmanship. #ohedchat
A1: Just thinking about the vitality and feeling of conquering all at the beginning of a new year - why don’t we feel the same on Monday mornings? #ohedchat
A2: went to a lot more project based learning as a former CBI and social studies teacher. Repeating facts is boring. Have the kids create me something be it a song, paper, video, etc & kids get excited because they own the work & its on them to show up & show out.
#ohedchat
A1 for me it’s a time to dig in deeper and get to the good stuff. This is the time of year my kindergarten Ss grow the most! It’s a turn up the heat time of the year. #ohedchat
A2: As a Spanish teacher, I decided I wanted spoken Spanish to be my legacy as a teacher.
Like a ship's captain, I set my bearing, pointed my vessel in the right direction and stayed the course.
#ohedchat
A2: Maximize T led PD time. Share managerial items through email or Google Classroom. Share best practices from our greatest assets which leads to improved S achievement. #ohedchat
A2 this year I started to actively use google classroom for all assignments, I’ve found that students who miss class do not feel “behind” when they return. #ohedchat
A2: Changing my approach to handle difficult situations- I used instantly get involved- now, I wait and guide others...letting them become problem solvers. I’ve learned to LOSE control and GIVE it back to the Ss. #ohedchat
A2: I did a new problem-based learning unit last year, and it really challenged the students to think for themselves to create a solution. It was very uncomfortable for some of them, but so good for them! #ohedchat
A2. We’ve moved from only staff nominating /voting for “Teacher and Support Staff of the Year” to including all Ss and Ps in the nominating process. 8th graders join staff in voting. #ohedchat
A2- January is a great time to reaffirm, build, and repair relationships with kids. Telling them you missed them and are happy to see them can bridge a divide. I used #oneword last year in Jan, and the kids responded well to the attempt to connect! #ohedchat
A2 one change was to tracking college/career readiness for my 8th graders this year. Created a google form for Ss to fill out prior to local career fair and trip to career center. This will give me info for individual meetings w/ Ss. #ohedchat
This was one of my first #OneWord mission statements for the year, and I set it in January!
https://t.co/qvwfU3c1GG
The new year can be a great time for new things. #ohedchat
A2: I stopped sending home worksheets for homework. Now I just send home stories/books to read. Students don't have me nagging them for work that wasn't meaningful. #ohedchat
I created Throwback Thursday quick quizzes so kids don't forget stuff from 1st semester. That worked last year really well. now I structured a lot of my curriculum for this year on short assessments like my TBT quizzes #ohedchat
A2: one of my goals this yr was to get rid of the “book of fun” which was just a packet of WS so far it’s awesome kids are more engaged & mastering skills faster #ohedchat
Welcome to #ohedchat this evening as @jmattmiller co-moderates "A New Year, A New You." We are grateful for his time. Take a tweet to introduce yourself to everyone.
Gotta check out https://t.co/HfoKMI358p if you haven't already
Lauren, that's HUGE! I'll bet relationships are better and you spend more time talking about the important stuff, not nagging about homework. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A2: Ditched giving grades. Moved to Standards based reporting and rubrics. Kids know where they are and where they need to go. The lrng no longer stops after getting a letter grade.
A2: When teaching middle school, I regularly surveyed my students about their experience in my science classes. Their feedback helped me shape my practices! #ohedchat
A2: Began to do more project based learning that was Ss led. One project that comes to mind is Ss blogging book reviews. I took a risk and it paid off! My Ss were more engaged and invested because they had a voice in their work. #ohedchat
I created Throwback Thursday quick quizzes so kids don't forget stuff from 1st semester. That worked last year really well. now I structured a lot of my curriculum for this year on short assessments like my TBT quizzes #ohedchat
A2: Giving Ss ownership in their own data. Identifying their learning groups and providing immediate interventions to grow. Seen increased student achievement but also greater student agency. #ohedchat
A2. Hard 2 gauge success at this point, but have increased communication & transparency w/ internal & external stakeholders thru weekly Principal's Msg & videos--& visibility every where. I think kids know admin is dialed in. Can't stop. Won't stop. #ohedchat
A2: I've done away with assigned seating at this point in the year. It does depend on the class(es), and we still have a seating chart for when subs are there, but when I've done it, it's usually worked well. #ohedchat
After meeting you at the Blended Learning conference, I have shared with many teachers how you structure your class. All have been inspired to work toward something similar! The work you do is incredibly impressive! #ohedchat
Great point! I am only 6 months into first year Principalship.... keys for me are visible•visible•visible••• HIGH energy constantly••• and communication! #OhEdChat ❤️
You're right--not every group of students. When I've done it, they almost always end up in their own "seating chart"--very little change happens once they find their "space." #ohedchat
A2 Asking Ss via Google survey if they preferred group work, projects, individual work, teacher directed reading groups vs. book clubs, & tech w/ blended learning to meet needs... Allows for highly differentiated & Ss driven teaching based on Ss request. #ohedchat
Amen. No assigned seating......and no need to ask me if you can use the restroom. If you have to ask....you don't need to go. If you need to go.....you don't care about my answer! #ohedchat
A2: one of my goals this yr was to get rid of the “book of fun” which was just a packet of WS so far it’s awesome kids are more engaged & mastering skills faster #ohedchat
#ohedchat A2: Ditched giving grades. Moved to Standards based reporting and rubrics. Kids know where they are and where they need to go. The lrng no longer stops after getting a letter grade.
A3. Getting out of the box and reaching out to other educators that collaborate to support our students #ohedchat Interested in supporting and building teacher capacity.
A2: Changing my approach to handle difficult situations- I used instantly get involved- now, I wait and guide others...letting them become problem solvers. I’ve learned to LOSE control and GIVE it back to the Ss. #ohedchat
A3: Creating a new bell schedule that drastically increases PLC time for Ts. Began creating a plan last month & now we are getting input from stakeholders. Plans w/ timelines are the key #ohedchat
A2: As a new admin, I hope to help be a part of the culture change of our building. We are working on making adjustments and learning it’s not an overnight process. We have to try and fail, and for me that’s ok, because it’s important to get it right. #ohedchat
A3 leading a district pd day on personalized pd and use of twitter for pd! Our district doesn't currently have a huge twitter following...hoping to lead that change w/ some fellow like Ts @bethctech#ohedchat
#ohedchat A3: Metacognition. It's my first year really investing in it. Ss are buying in and realizing that their reflections on process and emotions are more important than the content. Changes: once I go through this, have a more deliberate plan next year!
It's time, #ohedchat friends! Let's chat about "A New Year, A New You"!
Matt here, #DitchBook / #DitchHW author, speaker, career Spanish teacher. Glad to join you.
Please check in!
A3: went 1:1 this year. Trying to emphasize "Googling the answer is not cheating, and if they CAN Google the answer... ASK BETTER QUESTIONS." It's 2017...oops 2018. Google isn't going anywhere. #ohedchat
A2: I always take the time to slow down and continue building relationship with students. Spending a few minutes in a class talking to your students will get you hours of student engagement in the future. #ohedchat#ycsdchat
A3 - in Lancaster we have embarked on digital convergence. We are in year one making great strides converging our instructional, curricular, PD, leadership, and technology into a productive digital ecosystem for students and teachers to enable personalized learning #ohedchat
A3. We’ve decided, as a building, to realign teacher room locations to bring our grade levels together in different hallways/floors within the building. #ohedchat#change
I am an ELA T and have moved to allowing Ss to choose the novel they want to read. First want them to love to read. Now need to transition to Ss navigating ELA CCSS standards while reading novel of choice #ohedchat
This is even true at the college level. :-) Students stake their claims, and tend to stick to the same spots. But the power of CHOOSING is significant! #ohedchat
Being intentional about planning truly builds teacher capacity which transfers to student achievement, we have increased the time this year and seeing the benefits #ohedchat
A3: I have seen Pineapple charts around and want to bring it by my staff. But I have so many other things I am curious about and want to explore. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A3 My focus continues to be to go beyond the walls of the school to expose our Ss to other countries/speakers that share history. Engages Ss and leaves a lasting memory.
A3: Breaking out of the traditional bell schedule, making the day more fluid and less rigid, adding classes that focus on specific topics of interest, but utilize necessary skills. #ohedchat
A1: it’s a reboot for me and for us at school! New schedules, 26 new students, new courses, so we r doing a revisit for all our 305 students of norms, expectations, systems and course on our first day back. Tomorrow we set the tone for the rest of the year! #ohedchat
I'm interested in ditching semester exams and going to teacher-made, end-of-quarter, benchmark common assessments. Saw this in action recently. @bugynyte1906@DrJimmyShaw#ohedchat
A3 Always on the lookout for a better schedule --> especially one that has some breath as well as breadth in it. I'm especially intrigued by @BurkheadBill and his regional HS on Cape Cod.
#ohedchat
A3 simple stuff: rearranging my classroom. Something a little more difficult, teacher my Civil Rights Movement class thematically and not chronologically #ohedchat
Great idea. Have a schedule example I can share. Only tough part of the puzzle: if you share teachers with another building (i.e. high school). #ohedchat
A3: working w/ leaders such as @casas_jimmy to help other educators around the world. Always enjoy looking at how I spend my time & maximizing the time in the mornings. Like @Ericthomasbtc says "Let them sleep while you grind!" #ohedchat
A3: I would love to be able to give students the opportunity to participate in a genius hour project. Because I don't have my own class of students, I have to find ways to work with other people to make things happen. #ohedchat
A3: Working on fostering reflective thinking in the pre-service teachers I currently serve. It’s not easy. I’d like to require them to blog…but I’d rather that they choose it for themselves. Not sure how to make this work just yet. #ohedchat
A3: I am actually testing it out now. I decided to use Twitter to grow my network & make more connections online. Interested in learning from others so that I can support the work Ts are doing in the classroom. #ohedchat
A3: Change in my role for next year has my attention. While going to finish strong with my @wmscats, excited to join the crew of the @HCSD_ILC in 18/19. #ohedchat
A3: implementing mastery based learning. We do r own version & it works. I struggle because in traditional HS students can pass w/a D. We go back & reteach & explore to fill in the gaps. This is awesome but when dealing w/ credit deficient students this can be an issue.
#ohedchat
A3. We’ve decided, as a building, to realign teacher room locations to bring our grade levels together in different hallways/floors within the building. #ohedchat#change
You are reading my mind•••because I do share a few Ts with our HS- band and chorus....but I think we can create workarounds• Would LOVE to see your examples though! ❤️ #OhEdChat
I am very interested in implementing this as well! Are you doing a physical board or an online version. Just curious! I am trying to think of a way to propose it to my admins. #ohedchat
A3: changing my grading system from 100 point system to a 4 point system of standards based grading. Using reteaching/reassessment effectively fo Ss to gain understanding. #ohedchat
I've done some genius hour and the products students create are TREMENDOUS! And the things they learn that they wouldn't learn otherwise ... I'm hooked! #ohedchat
#OhEdChat A3: #futureready ELEM kids...Finland has went to phenomenon based learning where kids solve real world issues and have ditched the daily schedule of traditional academics....my Big Dream.
A3: Also, want to help schools recognize the importance of communication. Not just giving the responsibility to an admin team member, but seriously investing in communication. Successful orgs focus a great deal on communication. #ohedchat
A3: Creating a new bell schedule that drastically increases PLC time for Ts. Began creating a plan last month & now we are getting input from stakeholders. Plans w/ timelines are the key #ohedchat
I was thinking about this for my methods of teaching science class, to work on modeling it for my pre-service teachers. I’d like to set up a class Instagram account, and have them take turns documenting our learning in this public way. #ohedchat
Helping teachers truly track their students progress in an effective, easy to use and free way! My teachers jumped on board and maxed out our state growth predictions! Talk about a proud team! #ohedchat
A3) involving more community members by inviting them to teach their passions to small groups. Here is a local pastor teaching two boys how to build a table. The following day I had 30+ kids ask if they could work with him. Exploring how to grow this #ohedchat
A3: We are really taking on the student success coach system for this year. Each T or staff member adopts around 12-15 students to monitor and mentor progress. They meet once a week and then have grade level huddles weekly as a success coach team. Every S has a coach! #ohedchat
I moderate the school Facebook page, and I struggle with getting pictures of authentic learning and activities while still teaching in my own classroom. I have had good feedback from parents so far. #Ohedchat
A3: As a former English teacher, I have been working closely all year with our ELA dept. Right now, we are looking for a vocabulary program to implement and challenge our students. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A3 One of the best speakers was Congressman John Lewis! Spoke about Selma and March on Washington! Can’t get that in a textbook can you @jmattmiller !
A3 Ss creating content; not just being consumers, is high on my attention list!! Blended Learning also has my attention right now. I feel done right, it is a game changer for so many Ss personality types, & allows for amazing personalization. #Ohedchat
You bet! And here’s the sheet that is a bit messy but has a lot of good content! Tabs at the bottom for different themes we worked through. 😊 #ohedchathttps://t.co/3Zu1FLDlfy
It is. I really can’t believe it! The great thing about it is can be used for anyone grades 3/4 and up!
And so many variations being shared w/ me on how Ss are sharing, not limited to the padlet or Flipgrid #ohedchat
Couldn't find a good reason to continue them.
'Because we've always had them' became unacceptable to me. We could use the time for something better. #ohedchat
A4: roadblocks 🚧- lack of participation, fear of it being evaluative, burn out.
Overcome by staying upbeat 🙌🏻, sharing sucess stories 👍🏻& doling out the positive reinforcement 💯! #ohedchat
A3. Want 2 continue 2 change as a leader & learn w/ my staff ab what it truly means 2B an amazing middle school. Want 2 increase academic rigor while also build a culture of kindness, relationships, & pride. Grow advisory model. #ohedchat
A4: Making excuses about a lack of time. As @RyanBlair says, "If its important to you, you will find a way. If not, you'll find an excuse." I need to arrange my morning routine around what I need to be productive & successful. #ohedchat
A4: Keeping the focus on the students and their daily, weekly, monthly grind to success is key in achieving success this year. Focusing on what we can control and allowing those things to be our priority. #ohedchat
A4: Biggest roadblock is making sure that change is not just “one more thing on the plate.” What else can be removed/revamped to encourage the change process? #ohedchat
A4 not enough people being interested or not getting a session the next pd day.
I have to stay positive and realize that starting small can always get the ball rolling. Be patient and persevere! #ohedchat
I renovated our old library/computer lab into a Think Lab. Stations consist of green screen, broadcasting, Lego stop motion animation, graphic design, coding, little bits. Ss learn how to work each station by choose their own topics to present on. #ohedchat
In reply to
@Haole_josh, @jmattmiller, @TechTeacherTLP
A4 To complete my goals I need to make sure that I continually reflect on the process and purpose. When you find your why it makes dealing with obstacles much easier!
https://t.co/5djKWzyjWH#ohedchat
A4. They’re aren’t necessarily roadblocks, but we are moving forward with “The Purpose of Grading” as the staff is ready to adopt best practices. #ohedchat
A4: to create a rotating schedule we have to be creative with the Ts we share with our HS.
I think the key is taking it to Leadership early and vetting it out. #WeCanDoIt#Transparency#OhEdChat 🌟❤️🌟
A4. I am the most potential roadblock. Connecting with others will support my learning and "innovators mindset"... if I listen to those in the box; I'll have to get in of it with them; and that is not an option ;) #ohedchat
A4: Initiative Fatigue, Lack Of Communication, Resistance, Flavor of the Month PD, Lack Of Follow-Through, Failure To Outline Small Wins and Goals #ohedchat
That’s what I’m thinking! Great way to get the kids to learn some digital life skills and digital citizenship, and helps to tell your story in an engaging way too. #ohedchat
Krista from SE Michigan (close enough to Ohio, right??) and I teach 5th grade. My new thing for this year will be starting to use a Google Assistant/Google Home in the classroom! #OhEdChat#DitchBook
Dialogue, authentic experiences, projects, innovative approaches like multi-media presentations, discussions, dialogue and application. Just to name a few "how's". Exams have a time and place. Need to move beyond them. #ohedchat
A4- Buy-in for change can be a roadblock. Providing the "why" behind the idea is critical for success to occur! In addition, follow-up and support along the way is just as important! #ohedchat
A4. Don't let fear of failure deter you from disrupting yourself out of complacency.
Know your stakeholders. Strategize, navigate and empower accordingly. #ohedchat
A4: Letting the "naysayers" effect where we want to go. Focus on the positives and overall vision/mission. 100% won't jump on change immediately, but creating more time for Ts to work together is 100% the right thing to do @jessicaslocum3#ohedchat
A4: Hate to say it, but oftentimes it’s the student themselves! My students are so pragmatic—anything reflective seems like busywork to them, even though this is (to me) the heart of great teaching. Hard to convince them otherwise… #ohedchat
A4: Potential roadblocks: Those teachers or administrators who are satisfied with the way things have always been done or who fear change. How to overcome: Connect with them one at a time (just like we do with our students) #OhEdChat
A4: Making excuses about a lack of time. As @RyanBlair says, "If its important to you, you will find a way. If not, you'll find an excuse." I need to arrange my morning routine around what I need to be productive & successful. #ohedchat
A4 as a teacher, I was afraid that my ideas would be challenged or judges by colleagues. That obstacle would stop me in my place at times. BUT if it's a Change for the sake of students then go for it #ohedchat
Do you know a teacher, librarian, or any leader of a group that may want to talk to a scientist?
Tell them about #SkypeAScientist! It's a free program that matches scientists w/people who want to connect over science!
More info/Sign up at https://t.co/VoNguwa5um
PLEASE RT 😘
A4: Letting the "naysayers" effect where we want to go. Focus on the positives and overall vision/mission. 100% won't jump on change immediately, but creating more time for Ts to work together is 100% the right thing to do @jessicaslocum3#ohedchat
A4. For advisory: perception of advisory as an "extra" instead of a "must do" 4 young adolescents, so can B difficult 2 have enthusiasm & fidelity of implementation. Solution: grow this semester by collaborating w/ grade level leaders, do research ab gr8 advisory info #ohedchat
Getting culture to change takes SO much effort, and even if it doesn't feel like it, I'll bet you've already started to budge it in the right direction. Keep applying persistent pressure! #ohedchat
A4: Hate to say it, but oftentimes it’s the student themselves! My students are so pragmatic—anything reflective seems like busywork to them, even though this is (to me) the heart of great teaching. Hard to convince them otherwise… #ohedchat
We can share. Utilized a tool last week to get input from Admins in a Google Doc where they listed positives, opportunities for growth & Q’s they have based on 3 different schedules. Productive meeting lasting an hour. Getting staff input using Forms #OhEdChat
A4: A potential roadblock could be lack of buy in from all Ts. To combat pushback, I will make myself available to talk through any concerns or issues. I would also be willing to research any other programs or strategies. #ohedchat
Yes we started with determining graduation pathways for each student. Now they have built relationships & we are moving on to a strategic approach to family engagement per Home visits, meetings, &really personalizing approach to communications & family involvement. #ohedchat
A4:changing a grading system that is over a 100 years old will certainly be questioned, but with open and honest communication with Ps and Ss, this will help the transition. #ohedchat
A4: old students who remember the old way if doing things. We get some push back when we have students have to relearn a task. A few complain a D is passing at the other buildings. Continueing to be intentional on why we reteach and relearn.
#ohedchat
We are taking this route with Blended Learning in our school. A few teachers are going to implement changes and open their doors to others. Creates a culture of collaboration and support during change. #ohedchat
A4: Build FAITH. "Even though I don't see what you see, I will follow you because I have FAITH it's going to be awesome" it's more powerful than trust, essential to change #ohedchat
I don’t mind the naysayers. Sometimes, they are right. I use Facilitative Leadership Tools like the Forcefield Analysis so all voices are heard. #ohedchat
Couldn't find a good reason to continue them.
'Because we've always had them' became unacceptable to me. We could use the time for something better. #ohedchat
Oh my goodness ... the urgent IS a roadblock! Fighting fires. Makes me think of Covey's (?) four quadrants. Stay in the ones that are important, not necessarily urgent! #ohedchat
A5: #ohedchat If they're here.....they already have this answer! Another great source: @TheCTTL summer academy. Well worth it. Connects you to a cohort dedicated to improving classrooms, schools, and the culture of education.
A5: I share this podcast a lot, but it is game changing: @DonWettrick@letsstartedup podcast has guests who all think forward & take risks. If we are going to change, we need the right mindset to change. #ohedchat
This takes complete transparency with the teachers and the student information for those on their caseloads, it also takes trust. We have really improved our services to students and corrected many in the wrong paths to graduate. #ohedchat
The "bite-sized" pieces you're using are the "just right" amount--they're getting those tastes of it. Some will still get pragmatic, but it's hard to get too pragmatic in five minutes! #ohedchat
We are taking this route with Blended Learning in our school. A few teachers are going to implement changes and open their doors to others. Creates a culture of collaboration and support during change. #ohedchat
A4: previous students who remember the old way if doing things. We get some push back when we have them relearn a task to show mastery. A few complain a D is passing at the other buildings. Continueing to be intentional on why we reteach and relearn.
#ohedchat
A4: Letting the "naysayers" effect where we want to go. Focus on the positives and overall vision/mission. 100% won't jump on change immediately, but creating more time for Ts to work together is 100% the right thing to do @jessicaslocum3#ohedchat
A4: My #oneword2018 is balance for a reason! Being in a new role has me learning in a variety of ways. Twitter is one thing for me to learn & I will need to make sure to create time for it. What I learn can be brought to Ts. Strong PD is key! #ohedchat
A5: Innovator's Mindset by @gcouros is an excellent book around change--why and how. There are so many people on Twitter but I learn a lot from @alicekeeler and @jmattmiller. #ohedchat
Seeing opportunity where we are and with what we have can be a starting place if beyond the 'box' is to daunting . . . start close, gain confidence & think bigger . . . #stepbystep build the champion within #ohedchat
It also builds a sense of ownership in staff (many are not teachers) amongst each other, a shared end in mind with the focus of what’s best for kids beyond graduation... graduation is the means to the end, not the end... a successful career is the goal which varies! #ohedchat
A5: Many of the @markbarnes19#HackingLearning series are quick reads w/ ideas & solutions that can be incorporated tomorrow. Books like these make change look easy & allow us to visualize how we can make changes in our settings #ohedchat
A4: The main roadblock is the unease getting out of our comfort zones produces. The fear of failure. But, like we tell our students, fear of failure often means we’re trying something worthwhile. Otherwise it would be easy, and growth isn’t always easy. #ohedchat
#ohedchat If it's ok to forget content, then it was never important to learn it in the first place. Cut the fat.......and refocus on skills like applying, exploring/experimenting, collaborating, communicating, etc.
A4: previous students who remember the old way if doing things. We get some push back when we have them relearn a task to show mastery. A few complain a D is passing at the other buildings. Continueing to be intentional on why we reteach and relearn.

A5: I would like to offer my FREE app @WeTeachapp as a resource to collaborate with other educators as an extension of a Twitter chat that keeps on going in discussion Forums. Made by an educator for educators. Check it out! #ohedchat
A5: we visit other alt Hs as part of r PD and pick their brains. We all do something similar and being able to reflect w/others in a similar environment but different at the same time can help fill in the gaps.

2. Where/what you teach or your role in edu
3. Your WORD for '18
4. Why is this your word?
Due: 1/12/18
Oh my!! Where to start?? Everyone!! Just ask anyone!! What’s the worst that could happen? Someone tells you no and you’re where you were to begin with or someone tells you YES and you’re off and running!!! #ohedchat
A5.2: outside of education, no one does it better than Disney World. Leadership, change, innovation, experience. So much to learn about crafting exactly what people will value #ohedchat
A5: Twitter and podcasts have been quite beneficial for me. There are so many amazing educators out there. I’m glad I live in a time when we can communicate and receive instant professional development sessions. #ohedchat
A6: Create a plan that entails follow through. Utilizing tools & resources for organizing and streamlining processes leads to solutions. Change will occur if you make it a priority & have a plan. #ohedchat
that is what I am told..... I dont believe it #ohedchat .... my response is "even if they do, just b/c someone above me does bad pedagogy doesnt mean I have to" - but that doesnt get very far w/ others
they used that SAME rationale in the 80's with me. Haven't we grown beyond that in education? Middle schoolers, and underclassman aren't heading to college in the fall. #ohedchat

A6: Working on getting more help with our Social Media account. Going to share analytics data with the teachers to show them that parents/families want to hear & see the learning. #Ohedchat
A6: get input from others to create a movement & team approach. It is important to get input (positive & negative) from others to fine tune any changes you plan to make #ohedchat
#ohedchat A6 Continue to collaborate with @1988project and other staff members at North White to build successful lessons for our Ss. Continue to learn from others who share great ideas in Twitter chats like this one.
A6: #ohedchat Start now, do it poorly, learn from mistakes. Having earned the goodwill of Ss, I have capital to spend. Ss are more likely to give me helpful feedback if I've built the relationships properly.
A5 I am mindful to what others are reading, listening to, and follow.
My fellow educators constantly influence me.
Chats like this make me a better leader because I yearn to learn. #ohedchat
A6: Research some best practices on 4 point grading scales in ELA. Reach out to those who have been implemented and find out what worked what didn’t work. Keep the conversation going. Don’t give up and be complacent with old habits. #ohedchat
A5: I share this podcast a lot, but it is game changing: @DonWettrick@letsstartedup podcast has guests who all think forward & take risks. If we are going to change, we need the right mindset to change. #ohedchat
A6: it's my first year as admin. I need to put out a staff eval for me. Put on my big girl pants, get some thick skin, and read some anonymous feedback #ohedchat
I honestly can't tell you a think about most of my collegiate final exams. I remember one really horrible one that was simply all the authors we'd read, in alphabetical order, and one awesome "exam" that was actually sharing research & learning in a symposium format. #ohedchat

A6: Before going to the teachers, I need to make sure I have all my Ts crossed and Is dotted. I want to be as knowledgeable as possible and ready to address any potential confusion or concern. #ohedchat
A6: I am going to curate a bunch of information on the why, how, and successes of genius hour, so when I propose the idea to a colleague it will be an easy sell. :-) #ohedchat

A6: collaborate to continue to create course offerings that interplay across subjects and are applicable to real world skills students can use now and in their future endeavors. It will just take planned and specfic PD that allows teachers to have time to work together.
#ohedchat
Well, that’s pretty telling. I have a similar story: I remember one exam from college: our swimming assessment. Had to show what you learned in the pool by demonstrating all of the strokes and breathing we learned. My parents were so proud #Ohedchat

A6- I set my #oneword2018 as "commit". I've decided what I want to commit my time to and I've created action steps/checklists as daily reminders. In order to serve others, I must be committed to my decisions. #ohedchat
A6. Step up every day 2 motivate others 2 do the same. Our kids deserve & need every positive spark we can give them! Be a positive force 4 change & gather true edu-rebels 2gether 2 co-create plans 4 unflinching, furious change in middle grades. Boom! #ohedchat
