We have a foundations program that new teachers must attend for 4 years. Workshops ment to help. Also we have instructional coaches whose jobs are to help all teachers.
I would treat them like professionals as well as people. Give them the autonomy they want and still ask about their kid’s soccer game. #Relationships. #bfc530
By design? Not really sure.
We are a friendly place. We have our moments, to be sure. But inviting and welcoming, nevertheless.
Admins listen to us, too.
Mostly, we are treated as professionals - respected & trusted to make good decisions for the students.

We have a mentoring program and I think it helps some teachers navigate daily life in the buildings, but I stopped being a mentor years ago because it isn’t a robust or interesting program. #bfc530
I owrk in a great place. Also we are treated like th professionals we are. And our Principal tells us always: Family first. So if it's about your family, they get you coverage:)

Retaining Teachers ... first thing a school needs to do is understand why teachers are leaving. It is easy to assume it must be something the school is doing wrong ... maybe the teacher just wasn’t happy with direction the school was moving. That isn’t always negative #bfc530
I suspect it's more about timing than actual volume...getting hit between 4 and 8 the worst, then on-and-off through the day. Around 3" or so total expected, last I saw.
The incoming ice / freezing rain tonight is what has me worried.

That is great! Knowing that admins like yourself value & see them as a human rather than just a person who fills sections of a course is more important than any program b/c even with those programs, w/out admins that do what you do, they look good but are "empty suits" #bfc530
We have a program like that too which I've been a part of. Thought of it more as an orientation technique than a retention technique ; at least how ours is set up & run. #bfc530
We lost a few young teachers last year due to stress and dissatisfaction. It has bothered me that our school was the place that convinced them teaching wasn’t “for them.” They were both bright and capable. We let them down. #bfc530
Regarding teacher retention...I’m not convinced enough is done to celebrate, support and retain teachers. Much is expected of teachers, but many feel undervalued, I’m afraid. Simple words of thanks can go a long ways toward helping teachers believe in themselves! #bfc530
I really do love it!
One of the lower paying districts in the state. But I've gone to presidents' and negotiations meetings hosted by NJEA and we have it good compared to anywhere.

We don't do much. We are pretty rural, so geography helps with retention. We do lose teachers to other higher paying districts if they're willing to commute, or closer districts if they live farther away and don't want to commute anymore. #bfc530
A: People stay at any job because they are mentored, empowered, challenged, promoted, involved and above all valued. @wcsschools is a small district and there are plenty of opportunities for all of these things. #bfc530

In international schools it looks a little different. Along w/ supporting decisions, autonomy, PD budgets, it also often includes a contract extension bonus #bfc530
I believe that teacher retention is a huge issue. My school values teachers and our work, but we still lose great educators. Additional tasks and requirements can put Ts “over the edge.” #bfc530
Teachers have been hired and tend to stay at my school. Majority of our teachers are 15+ years. I'm sure the teacher market had something to do with that. Get a job, keep the job #bfc530

Not a snow day fan, TBH. I hate days coming off my summer, but mostly - cue today's topic - I really just love going to school, being with my kids, learning with them, and enjoying my colleagues' company.

Our district has a rigorous contract period for the first 3 months of school. It does weed out people who really shouldn’t be hired but it also deters good people from accepting offers because they get offered a contract right away with another district #bfc530
In order to retain teachers they have to buy into the mission of the school ... teachers won’t leave a school in which they have invested and they won’t want to leave if they feel invested the school is invested in them #bfc530

Ive heard the horror stories that bad, tenured teachers are "rewarded" w/less students (b/c parents call in complain their kid is in the class) while good & non-tenured are loaded up w/large class sizes. If you want to drive bad out, reverse the situation #bfc530
I like snow days! Especially unexpected ones. I know it takes days off summer and make the routine challenging the next day, but it's fun to have a surprise day off. I especially like them if there is real snow as part of the deal. #bfc530

That's often enough to remind them to stop talking about something they aren't sure of.
Like bullying, if you aren't stopping it, then you are letting it happen. That's on you.

#bfc530 my new years resolution was to spread positive "gossip" by telling people when someone said something nice about them - student or staff! Middle schoolers love to hear someone said something kind...and so do their teachers!

I do think $ matters, but the education world needs to move from the “you are an awesome teacher, here, do more.” Giving a teacher more work isn’t a great way to recognize their already great work. #bfc530
I will say one of the biggest things we can do to retain Ts is to be very clear with school vision. I think Dr. Mike Schmoker has a point when he also says curriculum matters. Giving Ts a decent curriculum so they don't have to make it from scratch is huge. #bfc530
We are allowed to try new things and fail, and encouraged to work together. Experiences outside of school like publishing and presenting are encouraged. #bfc530
My cousin once said: you leave a job because of the manager, not the job itself. Several articles in the NYT, Wall St Journal, et al, have said the same.
Teaching is a bit different in its demands & stresses. But a weak 'manager' makes the decision to leave much easier.

Growing up playing on teams has effected a lot of my thought on edu. It is really based on the culture of the school. Both schools I worked in are nurturing places w/most teachers looking out for everyone's best so the team can be the best (not all, no team is perfect) #bfc530
Agree. I feel supported, hear good things about the quality of education we are providing our community, but when you hear about severe low balling in contract negotiations from management…I didnt become a teacher to be rich & I understand its based on taxes but WOW #bfc530
The question isn’t so much how do we retain them? We should first ask the question, why would a teacher, especially good teachers, stay at this school? The answer will point towards what needs to be done. #bfc530

We have department leaders who are to provide support as well as mentor teachers for our early career teachers.
However, the effectiveness remains to be seen. Other variables impacting teacher retention need to be given attention at my school.
