Goooooood morning! I have not been getting up early enough to spend time with you very often this year. I’ve missed you! How is everyone on this happy day? #bfc530
Morning #bfc530 ! Expecting 8-12 inches of snow so just got the fall my kiddos have no school. But only expecting 1-3 where I work so no word yet. I hate when this happens #noreaster
Q 🤔 What would (or did) it take for your classroom/school/district to go from a traditional grading model to one based on competency/mastery of standards & skills?

Hope everyone had a great week and it prepared for a relaxing weekend...We have a Nor’easter brewing, but I’m hoping the babies just think it’s a new white noise machine... #bfc530

It's been a Nutty day at school today. So was not surprised at all to Google the moon phase during last period and discover that it's a full moon. #teacherlife

Great question! We're discussing making that change & at the moment what would help is seeing a lot of examples of what the grade book & progress report would look like #bfc530

We have have transitioned in some elective courses to graceless classrooms, having Ss and Ts collaborate on standard and how to demonstrate their mastery.
#bfc530
We, as a staff, simply made a commitment that going "grade-less" was what was needed for our students. Now instead of a focus on number/letter grades, the student conversations are on growth. Complete game changer...worth all the work to get there. #bfc530
I've been doing short one-question quizzes on standard specific skills, and noting them in the online gradebook as such, adding a comment as to whether the student has met the standard. Our gb doesn't really accommodate grading that way, tho. Trying to retrofit. #bfc530

I did some action research showing that (most) homework made not difference in Ss understanding, then followed up with grades & motivation. My grading hasn’t been the same since #bfc530
It takes time, lots of conversations, brave people to pilot the initiative and results to show that it works. It’s hard to break generations of traditions of mindsets but even the hardest holdouts will come along for the good of the students. #bfc530
Our elem schools have standards-based grading but 6-12 is traditional. I see the merits of both, but 1st and foremost, stakeholders must be onboard and informed for any huge paradigm shift (like changing grading policy) to take root #bfc530https://t.co/KPyL5UNoOV
I feel like I made the shift toward SBG when someone in my board showed me an evidence record like this where the 9 overall curriculum expectations become the standards with levels of achievement across the top.
#bfc530
Much of our faculty is pushing to go gradeless, and two depts use standards-based rubrics. We all read @tguskey On Your Mark two summers ago but didn’t discuss it. We still use grades. Whomever sets priorities hasn’t prioritized this. #bfc530
That is indeed a very important part of this to get right. We do lots of up front info sessions with parents and students to explain the process. Still get some push back, but the results speak for themselves. #bfc530
Honestly ... I think “gradeless” is a new trend ... using “mastered” is the new “A” when in reality the “A” should have always meant “Mastered” ... #bfc530 I know that is not a popular thought amongst gradeless advocates.
Unique expereince for me today:
presenting this afternoon @BigNEFootball on leading with passion (without apologies).
Excited to stretch myself in presenting in a new venue for me.

I'm waiting for that same call! I have to go over a bay bridge to get home - wondering if I'll be sleeping in the cafegymotorium tonight! lol #bfc530@MrEandre@btcostello05

It would be like moving the highest mountain (1-12)! But come to Kindergarten and the world of assessment and evaluation changes...for the better! #bfc530

I hear that. On some of our reports we have a checklist grid and all folks do is look to the right most check column. I think the change would have to be more radical just not to be an alternate interpretation. #bfc530
That's at least a good start! Here's a nice summary of the difference between standards based grading and the next step to competency based...the latter allowing much more personalized growth for each student: https://t.co/qLlraPBxAF#bfc530

I see that with my own daughter and how she began to "settle" that she wasn't smart. Took a lot of encouragement to show her she was growing intellectually. She is in a good place now. #bfc530
We did that, but the results from those classes/schools weren’t shared. It was just sort of thrown at us. I’m wondering if anyone in my district is looking at it again. #bfc530
This is the second time I’ve been a part of this change and both times it was the same process... once in middle school and once in high school. #bfc530
Ok well I'm not driving home in 8-12 inches of snow if my school diesnr close. Not after already being stuck in the mud this week. I must be feeling a cold coming on #sickDay#bfc530#whyArentTheyClosing
I go over a bridge, though not one of the massive ones in MD, It is also windy here. I can't imagine them calling for wind unless it was a hurricane though #bfc530

Lots of administrative support, teacher training, creativity, risk taking and more support! 😊 #bfc530 willingness to implement out of the box thinking!

I restructured the way I give feedback in writing workshop, basically turning my conferences into guided self-evaluation (plus the mini-lessons Ss asked for) and the results were amazing #bfc530https://t.co/cNQ30RmjkE
We do too much word smithing in education ... using the term assessment does not mean you not longer test ... we’re not fooling the kids. Their feeling won’t be less hurt when they get a needs improvement vs a D #bfc530
Indeed...it's so much more than just a name. It's a complete culture change. If we are not willing to go there and affect true change for the students, then it's only window dressing for the same old, same old. #bfc530
Missed the chat - and the question was beyond bear and dear to my ❤️ My Q is, why do districts think it is good pedagogy for elementary, but stops in middle? I know they talk college, but the time is here to make this change for all our kids! #bfc530
And someone who has a clue must decide what to include as skills Ss should "Master". My daughter just couldn't "Master" using the CD drive. I was like are you guys kidding me?
#bfc530
Ugh. Travel insurance barely ever covers things like that. You basically need your house on fire with a blizzard, 3 deaths in the family and a paper cut to get money back #bfc530

Reality is ... when teachers give grades for showing up ... making a table of contents for a science notebook ... participation ... it hinders proper learning growth measurement. #bfc530
I'm settling in with my stack of books on this snow-ish, wind-ish day - if I can't #librarian, at least I'll get lots of reading done! Have a great weekend #bfc530
We come up with different words (e.g. assessment vs. test) to distinguish what we’re trying to do (assessing what they’ve learned) from what‘s happened in the past (ranking/sorting). But the students (and we) very quickly associate the new word with the old set of ideas. #bfc530
Students in our board created a version of this program as a class project for their teacher. Board then took it over and adopted it system wide. It's an online software by Ocdsb. #BFC530
Thanks, Carla. Reach out if I can ever be of any help. It's not an easy journey, but well worth it...and no one ever said preparing children to thrive in an uncertain world would be easy. #growthmindset#bfc530

In the middle of it as we speak. It’s starting with the 9th grade team and a focus on personalized learning. Lots of PD, site visits, shadowing Kids schedules has led to a shift in mindsets. This work is now moving to other grades. Gradual but positive shift. #bfc530
So words meant to distinguish sets of practices (and all the associated thoughts, feelings, and actions) end up eliciting those same thoughts, feelings, and actions anyway. #bfc530

That’s awesome that students created the program. I love grading by expectations. Makes it easy for students to see where they need improvement and makes report card writing way easier. #bfc530

We may call them different names but the result is the same ... you can call a fart breaking wind, passing gas, or nature’s febreze, but it is still the same result #bfc530
Is it clear though? I have to drive into the city for work. Some city drivers worry me. Saw one accident behind a school bus (not involved) this week and that is enough (all we’re fine). #bfc530
Our district calendar is published with the weather make-up days listed along the bottom and we are firmly cautioned: do not make unbreakable plans #bfc530
After the tease of sun and heat I am not pleased to see a huge blanket of white outside. Moods were so chipper with the sun and warm temps. Been a long winter. #bfc530

Thanks! I should also add that there is a strong culture of SEL and RJ at the school (I’m the SEL Specialist) that helps to move this work forward. #bfc530
A highly decorated former US Navy Admiral & Chief of the Pacific Fleet with connections to the old guard of the Intelligence community calls the #SethRich murder case a well known cover-up amongst US Intelligence agencies. At the very least this should trigger a new investigation
When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win. Example, when we are down $100 billion with a certain country and they get cute, don’t trade anymore-we win big. It’s easy!
Seconds after I tweeted about the missing $800 million from a 2014 Broward Schools bond, Broward Schools Supt. Robert Runcie blocked me.
What’s he afraid of?

That's funny (and hypocritical), the EU didn't seem concerned with American opinion when they applied their own tariffs on Chinese Steel and Aluminum last year. https://t.co/AUoiwFjGyK
Don’t you think it’s petty to unverify this account which has almost 400,000 followers just because PV investigates Twitter? Also, why did your spokesman say you don’t shadow ban accounts when Abhinav Vadrevu, Software Engineer who worked for you, said Twitter did shadow ban. ???
Friday, diner run, but today it's a snow day so I can savor it. With all the noise my students & my daughters produce in their excitement, times of quiet alone time is refreshing. #njed#satchat#bfc530

It’s hard being an #SBG teacher in a non-SGB realm. I did it for two years and let it slip this year. Getting back into it and love it. Parents support only when informed. They love the idea. Thank you @TomSchimmer#bfc530

Family understanding=huge. Can be tailwind, which feels better than headwind alternative. 2 recent conference convos encouraged me to feel wind shifting favorably. Yet, traditional sway of grades holds power- S yesterday stressed re: grade precluding extracurric chance #bfc530
