#HSD1Chat will be a PLC based chat involving educators from Helena Public Schools. However, other educators are invited to participate. It will occur on the second Tuesday of every month.
A1: we have an IEFA tutor but itās a new person every year. I donāt have any Ss working with her his year. The position seems to have a high turnover rate. #HSD1CHAT
A1- yes, we do. She's got an office and work space for the students, which they are aware of and take advantage of. It's located, roughly, in the middle of the school.
#hsd1chat
Thatās interesting! Itās a bummer to see our Ss not be able to use this resource because itās not provided appropriately. Thanks for the information! #hsd1chat
A2- in Gov I work it in wherever I can, but largely in regards to Federalism; we did some readings on reservation law and Tribal Federalism earlier this semester. It comes up with Executive treaties as well.
#hsd1chat
A2. #hsd1chat
I could do a better job. Luckily for me, I feel like our Journey's provides many "IEFA teaching moments" Lewis and Clark story, etc. We also go to the community Pow Wow every year! We teach lots during that time.
A2) It depends on the content. I never want to force it where it doesn't fit logically or naturally. For example, AP Euro it comes up very little with the exception of colonization and the Columbian exchange. In my Western US history class, I incorporate it much more. #HSD1Chat
the Bigger of the assignments was MT tribes, but we spent 2 or 3 days prior to that going over the legal history of Native Americans in America. The schedule didn't work out this year, but in the past we've had folks from the Museum come in, too.
#hsd1chat
A2b) One specific example in Western history, involves an essay in which Ss research two native tribes and compare them in order to understand the diversity and richness of native cultures in the western United States #HSD1Chat
A3- OPI has an awesome pool of grade-appropriate SS IEFA documents and activities. There's also a PBS special from the early 2000s that does a great, brief, accessible job of explaining it in political terms both past and future
#hsd1chat
A3) Primary sources where possible (i.e. speeches, images, etc.) As well as secondary sources such as documentaries and articles. OPI has a great database of resources and lessons for IEFA. #HSD1Chat
A3: I have several books and different websites with information. A few weeks ago we were discussing a tribe from Northern California, and I used two-column notes from our writing to discuss the text. #HSD1CHAT
A3. #hsd1chat
I use many books. I check them out from the library and borrow them from @youtheduteach :) I need to refresh my memory and check out OPI's resources!
A4: I have found it challenging, especially in my science fiction class, to find a place that makes sense to teach it. It is a tough topic for all classes. #hsd1chat
A4- getting it spread throughout the year without it feeling like I'm shoehorning the content in. I eventually realized it didn't have to be EVERYWHERE and looked for the best places to work it in.
#hsd1chat
A4) Truthfully, none come to mind in my experience so far. Resources have been reasonable to find. Students have been receptive. Social Studies courses really lend themselves well to IEFA. #HSD1Chat
A4. #hsd1chat
I haven't necessarily ran into any challenges while teaching IEFA. More just the challenge of making sure that I am teaching it, finding the time, and creating lessons with good resources. I wish they were provided.
That's so true! In the past, I have felt like I cram it all in at the beginning of the year, or at the end to meet my standards. It shouldn't be like that. #hsd1chat
a4 As a music teacher, it is a very delicate line between doing appropriate IEFA music lessons and doing inappropriate music activities. Most Native music has ceremonial or spiritual context, which is not usually appropriate for public school consumption or production. #hsd1chat
A3 I frequently reference the OPI website when planning IEFA lessons. I also love listening to @Ind_Snds_radio because they have fantastic music, in a range of styles, that will widen my familiarity with native music. #hsd1chat
a2 My favorite example of integrating IEFA into my class was a collaborative unit I did with my PE & library colleagues. We combined for a week of hands on, active learning that covered native sports/games, Montana tribal facts & learning about powwow dances/music. #hsd1chat
a1 Yes! Rossiter has a IEFA tutor. I am not entirely sure what her workspace is. I usually see her in the staff room, so perhaps that is her designated work space? I am unsure. We did not have her at the beginning of the year. It's great to have her a few days a week. #hsd1chat
A5- oof. I wish I could do more; I had a bunch of art set to teach about the history of politics at the start of the year, but schedule changes cut into that time. If I can I work art into my presentations, but it's hard.
#hsd1chat
A5. #hsd1chat
I love to use "drawing/sketching" with writing. It helps first graders with detail! Even math story problems go well with art! First grade is fun :)
A5) I've actually tried to focus on that this year. One of my best examples is teaching a brief unit on Arabesque art when studying the Middle East in World Cultures - I had Ss create their own intricate Arabesque art on templates made from sturdy paper plates. #HSD1Chat
Fortunately, youtube makes it really easy to bring authentic performances into my classroom (like powwows around the state). There are older curriculum materials that have "Indian songs" in them, but are culturally inaccurate and often stereotypical. #hsd1chat
There are some really interesting movement lessons that are based on interpreting works of visual art. I am not sure that high school students would be emotionally open to that, as it can be a little touchy/feely.
#hsd1chat
True. It is easy in first grade to grab some paint and construction paper and "create" when you're only 6 or 7. Much more challenging to entertain older kiddos. #hsd1chat
A5 if we are talking strictly visual art, I haven't done a whole lot of that this year. Last year, in moments of panic, I would have kindergarten or behaviorally challenged 1st "draw what they hear." That definitely has value, but I was displeased w/ my delivery of it. #hsd1chat
A6. #hsd1chat
I use what the school provides for the most part as far as materials go. Every once in a while, I will run to Walmart for something small. I use @Pinterest and @TpTdotcom for MANY ideas when it comes to art.
absolutely! I haven't done any of that yet (although it would be a great lesson option if/when I lose my voice!). I should probably make more of a point to use Fantasia, because I am under the impression most kids don't know those films any more! #kidsthesedays#iamold#hsd1chat
A6- Google Image Search and a vague idea of what I'm looking for. Occasionally I'll know exactly the thing I'm looking for (Teddy Roosevelt on a Moose, a Thomas Nast cartoon) but it's often dumb luck ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ #hsd1chat
A6) When I teach about major artistic movements in AP Euro, I usually use digital images. For occasional projects, I often buy them myself then get reimbursed through my department or deduct it from taxes. #hsd1chat
Have you considered having your ap Euro kids use their devices to do the Google Arts & Culture art selfie comparison? I could see that as being a light-hearted activity after the AP test. Find their lookalike portrait, research, write an blurb. #hsd1chat
