A1: 4G's does have a tutor, I think one day a week. She uses an available table that she can find in the hallway. #hsd1chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:05 PM EDT
A1: we have an IEFA tutor but itā€™s a new person every year. I donā€™t have any Ss working with her his year. The position seems to have a high turnover rate. #HSD1CHAT

A1. #hsd1chat Our school does have a tutor. I don't have any Ss tutored this year. There is not a designated area for them to work-Hallway space.
  • cpierce2009 Mar 13 @ 10:05 PM EDT
A1) Yes, Matt Reyant fills that position for CHS. #HSD1Chat
  • HhsAmerican Mar 13 @ 10:06 PM EDT
A1- yes, we do. She's got an office and work space for the students, which they are aware of and take advantage of. It's located, roughly, in the middle of the school. #hsd1chat
  • danebroadhead Mar 13 @ 10:06 PM EDT
HHS has an Indian Ed tutor #HSD1Chat
  • EngWithWallace Mar 13 @ 10:06 PM EDT
A1: We do have an IEFA tutor, and he has his own room which is connected to another in the basement. #hsd1chat
  • MrsKimStout Mar 13 @ 10:07 PM EDT
I agree. It does seem like it's a new person every year. But, it's hard to find a place when you have no space or school to call "home." #hsd1chat

  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:07 PM EDT
A1b: In the past Ss have had to work in the hallway or within the classroom to get help. Is this just at the elementary level? #HSD1CHAT
  • danebroadhead Mar 13 @ 10:07 PM EDT
A1) HHS has a full time Indian Ed for all tutor #HSD1Chat
  • HhsAmerican Mar 13 @ 10:08 PM EDT

Thatā€™s interesting! Itā€™s a bummer to see our Ss not be able to use this resource because itā€™s not provided appropriately. Thanks for the information! #hsd1chat

  • EngWithWallace Mar 13 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2: We do a variety of literature pieces by Native Americans throughout the year, especially since jr English is technically American Lit. #hsd1chat
  • MrsKimStout Mar 13 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2: This year has been easy, it fits in well with MT History and Lewis and Clark. I have been able to get a lot of IEFA lessons in. #hsd1chat
  • HhsAmerican Mar 13 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2- in Gov I work it in wherever I can, but largely in regards to Federalism; we did some readings on reservation law and Tribal Federalism earlier this semester. It comes up with Executive treaties as well. #hsd1chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A2. #hsd1chat I could do a better job. Luckily for me, I feel like our Journey's provides many "IEFA teaching moments" Lewis and Clark story, etc. We also go to the community Pow Wow every year! We teach lots during that time.
  • danebroadhead Mar 13 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A2) This year, we integrated a Native American dance lesson into our dance unit. It was a big success #HSD1Chat
  • HhsAmerican Mar 13 @ 10:14 PM EDT
are these like transcribed oral traditions or more recent literature? #hsd1chat
    In reply to @EngWithWallace
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:14 PM EDT
Do you focus on MT tribes or all tribes? #hsd1chat
    In reply to @HhsAmerican
  • cpierce2009 Mar 13 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A2) It depends on the content. I never want to force it where it doesn't fit logically or naturally. For example, AP Euro it comes up very little with the exception of colonization and the Columbian exchange. In my Western US history class, I incorporate it much more. #HSD1Chat
  • MrsKimStout Mar 13 @ 10:15 PM EDT
    What a great idea!! #hsd1chat
    In reply to @danebroadhead
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:15 PM EDT
A2: I tie it into the reading series and when I have other opportunities. I need to do a better job incorporating it. #HSD1CHAT
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:16 PM EDT
#hsd1chat I bet that is a challenge! Much easier to teach IEFA in your US History Class :)
    In reply to @cpierce2009
  • HhsAmerican Mar 13 @ 10:16 PM EDT
the Bigger of the assignments was MT tribes, but we spent 2 or 3 days prior to that going over the legal history of Native Americans in America. The schedule didn't work out this year, but in the past we've had folks from the Museum come in, too. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @youtheduteach
  • cpierce2009 Mar 13 @ 10:16 PM EDT
A2b) One specific example in Western history, involves an essay in which Ss research two native tribes and compare them in order to understand the diversity and richness of native cultures in the western United States #HSD1Chat

A3: I had a college professor make a collection of Native American myths for us and I've used resources from OPI. #hsd1chat
  • danebroadhead Mar 13 @ 10:22 PM EDT
A3) For the dance lesson, our department coordinated with our building IEFA tutor and the district IEFA coordinator #HSD1Chat
  • HhsAmerican Mar 13 @ 10:22 PM EDT
A3- OPI has an awesome pool of grade-appropriate SS IEFA documents and activities. There's also a PBS special from the early 2000s that does a great, brief, accessible job of explaining it in political terms both past and future #hsd1chat
  • cpierce2009 Mar 13 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A3) Primary sources where possible (i.e. speeches, images, etc.) As well as secondary sources such as documentaries and articles. OPI has a great database of resources and lessons for IEFA. #HSD1Chat
  • MrsKimStout Mar 13 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A3: Teacher Pay Teachers has been helpful! Also @MontanaPBS has some great resources! And the Montana Historical Society. #hsd1chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A3: I have several books and different websites with information. A few weeks ago we were discussing a tribe from Northern California, and I used two-column notes from our writing to discuss the text. #HSD1CHAT
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A3. #hsd1chat I use many books. I check them out from the library and borrow them from @youtheduteach :) I need to refresh my memory and check out OPI's resources!

A3b: I ordered books this month for our classroom library and asked Ss for their suggestions. Many Ss asked for more Native American books. #HSD1CHAT
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:30 PM EDT
    That's so cool! #hsd1chat
    In reply to @youtheduteach
  • MrsKimStout Mar 13 @ 10:31 PM EDT
A4: Sometimes, time. Sometimes appropriate resources. Sometimes, lack of Ss engagement. #hsd1chat
  • EngWithWallace Mar 13 @ 10:31 PM EDT
A4: I have found it challenging, especially in my science fiction class, to find a place that makes sense to teach it. It is a tough topic for all classes. #hsd1chat
  • HhsAmerican Mar 13 @ 10:31 PM EDT
A4- getting it spread throughout the year without it feeling like I'm shoehorning the content in. I eventually realized it didn't have to be EVERYWHERE and looked for the best places to work it in. #hsd1chat
  • cpierce2009 Mar 13 @ 10:32 PM EDT
A4) Truthfully, none come to mind in my experience so far. Resources have been reasonable to find. Students have been receptive. Social Studies courses really lend themselves well to IEFA. #HSD1Chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:32 PM EDT
A4. #hsd1chat I haven't necessarily ran into any challenges while teaching IEFA. More just the challenge of making sure that I am teaching it, finding the time, and creating lessons with good resources. I wish they were provided.
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:33 PM EDT
A4: Time to teach all the materials appropriately and in-depth. #HSD1CHAT
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:33 PM EDT
That's so true! In the past, I have felt like I cram it all in at the beginning of the year, or at the end to meet my standards. It shouldn't be like that. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @HhsAmerican
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:33 PM EDT
A4b: I find we just touch the surface of IEFA and could be doing a much better job if we had more time to dive into the culture with our Ss. #HSD1CHAT
  • MrsKimStout Mar 13 @ 10:35 PM EDT
I really liked it when the tutors helped us with the lessons and gave us ideas of things to teach. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @youtheduteach
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:35 PM EDT
    A4b. #hsd1chat I think it's a challenge that I don't feel confident when I teach IEFA.
  • danebroadhead Mar 13 @ 10:36 PM EDT
A4) one challenge can be equipment and making sure that we teach the game/activity correctly to keep the authenticity #HSD1Chat
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:36 PM EDT
a4 As a music teacher, it is a very delicate line between doing appropriate IEFA music lessons and doing inappropriate music activities. Most Native music has ceremonial or spiritual context, which is not usually appropriate for public school consumption or production. #hsd1chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:36 PM EDT
Absolutely! It is kind of "touchy" #hsd1chat
    In reply to @danebroadhead

    In reply to @MrsKimStout, @youtheduteach
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:37 PM EDT
#hsd1chat I would feel so much better if I had some "direction" at times.
    In reply to @MrsKimStout, @youtheduteach
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:37 PM EDT
I agree, teaching with authenticity is extremely important. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @danebroadhead
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:37 PM EDT
A3 I frequently reference the OPI website when planning IEFA lessons. I also love listening to @Ind_Snds_radio because they have fantastic music, in a range of styles, that will widen my familiarity with native music. #hsd1chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:38 PM EDT
I pictured it being easier to teach in music, but that makes lots of sense! WOW! :) #hsd1chat So interesting.
    In reply to @DramstadMusic
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:39 PM EDT
a2 My favorite example of integrating IEFA into my class was a collaborative unit I did with my PE & library colleagues. We combined for a week of hands on, active learning that covered native sports/games, Montana tribal facts & learning about powwow dances/music. #hsd1chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:40 PM EDT
    Switching gears... #hsd1chat
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:41 PM EDT
a1 Yes! Rossiter has a IEFA tutor. I am not entirely sure what her workspace is. I usually see her in the staff room, so perhaps that is her designated work space? I am unsure. We did not have her at the beginning of the year. It's great to have her a few days a week. #hsd1chat
  • EngWithWallace Mar 13 @ 10:41 PM EDT
A5: I love using art to help set the stage for a novel unit. Students enjoy participating in gallery walks prior to reading. #hsd1chat
  • HhsAmerican Mar 13 @ 10:42 PM EDT
A5- oof. I wish I could do more; I had a bunch of art set to teach about the history of politics at the start of the year, but schedule changes cut into that time. If I can I work art into my presentations, but it's hard. #hsd1chat
  • MrsKimStout Mar 13 @ 10:42 PM EDT
A5: Art... I really struggle with this subject this year. I havenā€™t done much at all. #hsd1chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:42 PM EDT
A5: I was much better about art in 1st grade than 3rd. We donā€™t have a curriculum or the materials to teach art and different mediums. #HSD1CHAT
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:43 PM EDT
A5. #hsd1chat I love to use "drawing/sketching" with writing. It helps first graders with detail! Even math story problems go well with art! First grade is fun :)
  • cpierce2009 Mar 13 @ 10:43 PM EDT
A5) I've actually tried to focus on that this year. One of my best examples is teaching a brief unit on Arabesque art when studying the Middle East in World Cultures - I had Ss create their own intricate Arabesque art on templates made from sturdy paper plates. #HSD1Chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:43 PM EDT
A5b: We go to the Holter Museum and learn about the current exhibit and make a project. #HSD1CHAT
  • danebroadhead Mar 13 @ 10:44 PM EDT
A5) kind of difficult in the gym. In Soph PE, FWP comes in and does a fish art printing project that is part of our hooked on fishing unit #HSD1Chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:44 PM EDT
Very cool! How did it go? #hsd1chat
    In reply to @cpierce2009
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:44 PM EDT
Fortunately, youtube makes it really easy to bring authentic performances into my classroom (like powwows around the state). There are older curriculum materials that have "Indian songs" in them, but are culturally inaccurate and often stereotypical. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @Jamiejoleen
  • MrsKimStout Mar 13 @ 10:45 PM EDT
Thatā€™s exactly how I feel now that Iā€™ve moved to 4th grade! #hsd1chat
    In reply to @youtheduteach
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:46 PM EDT
There are some really interesting movement lessons that are based on interpreting works of visual art. I am not sure that high school students would be emotionally open to that, as it can be a little touchy/feely. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @danebroadhead
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:46 PM EDT
A5: I find that we do more talking about than creating art in the upper grades. The projects seem to require more materials with older Ss. #HSD1CHAT
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:48 PM EDT
True. It is easy in first grade to grab some paint and construction paper and "create" when you're only 6 or 7. Much more challenging to entertain older kiddos. #hsd1chat
    In reply to @youtheduteach
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:48 PM EDT
A5 if we are talking strictly visual art, I haven't done a whole lot of that this year. Last year, in moments of panic, I would have kindergarten or behaviorally challenged 1st "draw what they hear." That definitely has value, but I was displeased w/ my delivery of it. #hsd1chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:49 PM EDT
Aw! That's so awesome. Good job! #hsd1chat
    In reply to @cpierce2009
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:50 PM EDT
a5b I do start to use art vocabulary with my Ss in reference to movement or melodic contour (straight, zigzag, curvy, etc). #hsd1chat
  • EngWithWallace Mar 13 @ 10:51 PM EDT
A6: For gallery walks, I use online images. For art projects, most (if not all) materials I purchase. #hsd1chat
  • MrsKimStout Mar 13 @ 10:51 PM EDT
    A6: @Pinterest! Lol. #hsd1chat
  • youtheduteach - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:52 PM EDT
    A6: @TpTdotcom, PTO funding,school supplies #HSD1CHAT
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:52 PM EDT
A6. #hsd1chat I use what the school provides for the most part as far as materials go. Every once in a while, I will run to Walmart for something small. I use @Pinterest and @TpTdotcom for MANY ideas when it comes to art.
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:52 PM EDT
absolutely! I haven't done any of that yet (although it would be a great lesson option if/when I lose my voice!). I should probably make more of a point to use Fantasia, because I am under the impression most kids don't know those films any more! #kidsthesedays #iamold #hsd1chat
    In reply to @cpierce2009
  • HhsAmerican Mar 13 @ 10:53 PM EDT
A6- Google Image Search and a vague idea of what I'm looking for. Occasionally I'll know exactly the thing I'm looking for (Teddy Roosevelt on a Moose, a Thomas Nast cartoon) but it's often dumb luck ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ #hsd1chat
  • danebroadhead Mar 13 @ 10:53 PM EDT
A6) all of our materials come from FWP and the hooked on fishing program #HSD1Chat
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:54 PM EDT
a6 I don't do art projects in my classroom. I use my classroom budget to pay for music materials though, which is my primary art focus! ;) #hsd1chat
  • Jamiejoleen - Moderator Mar 13 @ 10:55 PM EDT
    Music is ART! :) #hsd1chat

A6) When I teach about major artistic movements in AP Euro, I usually use digital images. For occasional projects, I often buy them myself then get reimbursed through my department or deduct it from taxes. #hsd1chat
  • DramstadMusic Mar 13 @ 10:56 PM EDT
Have you considered having your ap Euro kids use their devices to do the Google Arts & Culture art selfie comparison? I could see that as being a light-hearted activity after the AP test. Find their lookalike portrait, research, write an blurb. #hsd1chat
