#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
We believe that it is critical that we have a chat that looks at sexual assault from various angles to understand the role that we all must play to address this issue #hiphoped
If we love Hip-Hop then we have to be able to address and correct the culture by addressing and correcting ourselves when necessary and when it comes to #SexualAssault it’s critical #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd today I learned of 2 of our babies being killed by their mothers' boyfriends--one 5 and one 7 months--the abuse is toxic. #Canwestopbeatingrkids
#HipHopEd our students want, need and respond to safe spaces where sexual abuse & violence is addressed! From #MeToo & #Cobsy to #BAM & our their community

Black women not only have to live with the continued weight of racism, but misogynoir at every turn. This burden killed Erica Garner, and is why we must collectively fight to support Black women’s health outcomes. https://t.co/XJwZ7GkXSM
Sexual assault is not just an adult problem, we must be willing to address the sexual violence that happens to our kids. Policies that limit how schools address sex contribute to hostile spaces for our students to come forward. #HipHopEd
If you know me in any capacity you know how I feel about Nas. So you know this is the piece I wish I never had to write.
I hope we are ready to have a convo about how Black women are expected to show our love in a way that is killing us.

Yes! In this case, it's the men who have to leverage their privilege to disrupt these systems -- in this case sexism -- from the inside out. It's up to men to elevate/amplify women's voices and *to believe them* #HipHopEd
#hiphoped we have to stop protecting perpetrators...I don't care if they r Blk men. I can understand their pain...they just don't get to re-inflict it on women!
Its easy to (deservedly) call out abusers like R. Kelly & Cosby b/c they fit the idea that "bad people" harass & assault women. But don't let that make you overlook how each of us is complicit in misogyny and rape culture. What does accountability look like? #HipHopEd
This conversation makes me think of the documentary “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” and its look at toxic masculinity. It’s a powerful tool for teaching. #HipHopEd
I wonder if the school "dress codes" (a) sexualize girls' bodies and (b) put the responsibility of whether they're harassed onto them rather than on those who do the harassing #HipHopEd
Hank you for sharing this. As someone who studies gender violence & writes expert testimony for people seeking asylum from gender violence, breaking the silence is crucial! #HipHopEd

It’s important to acknowledge, right out the gate, the way my/our (other men) silence about misogyny in hip hop particularly towards Blk women cultivates an atmosphere where rape culture festers & flourishes. Our silence is an antecedent to all sorts of violence #HipHopEd

The way that we view sex itself as a conquest and a validation of our manhood opens the door for assault to happen in various forms. We must redefine manhood totally a part from our sexual interactions #hiphoped
I fully stopped one of my classes one day, after one of my young men made an off-handed comment about pornography and replicating some “moves” with a sig other. It led to a powerful discussion led by my young women on the seriousness of sexual violence. #HipHopEd
@msshanitarenee wrote this dope piece on the ride or die trope in hip hop and how destructive it is on Blk women’s emotional, psychological and physical health. The way it gets situated within hip hop as the ideal type is another way we, men, exacerbate hurt & pain #HipHopEd

As a Black Man I have to understand that regardless of the systems that oppress in the country, when it comes to women, I still have privilege #hiphoped

We have to learn how to hold people accountable without throwing them away. We have to learn how build up victims without them having to justify their pain #HipHopEd
Truth. Just like we critique other forms of art in a scholarly fashion, our students can look at a work of hip hop, and provide a brilliant, multi-perspective critique of it. These are honestly some of my favorite conversations as a teacher! #HipHopEd
It is up to all of us who are parents, siblings, relatives, teachers, friends, & innocent bystanders toninterrogatemthe gender bias messages we are sending & receiving to stop the #metoo#TIMESUP violence of sexual harassment & sexual assault against all genders! #HipHopEd
Yes! In this case, it's the men who have to leverage their privilege to disrupt these systems -- in this case sexism -- from the inside out. It's up to men to elevate/amplify women's voices and *to believe them* #HipHopEd
Agreed! I think Black men and white women are in unusual positions wrt privilege -- that privilege varies with context. I believe race has a bigger "range" (i.e., more oppression bc of race than of gender), but then sometimes safer to be a man than a woman. #HipHopEd
Guys: i really need you to understand that there is so much you don't experience that women do on a daily basis. Just because its never happened to you doesn't make my experience less real. When i talk about it, listen. #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/a2I2gByZxV
As a Black Man I have to understand that regardless of the systems that oppress in the country, when it comes to women, I still have privilege #hiphoped
The “I” in that statement is powerful. As men, we’ve all been there, and need to insert “I” into our discourse, rather than talking as if we’ve never done these things. #HipHopEd
Indeed. We are all complicit by either silence or turning away & pretending it didn’t happen. Does anyone remember the Stevie Wonder video on domestic violence? It was powerful but had a short life & was never lifted up like his other music. #HipHopEd#TIMESUP
I too have to recognize my position in this as a white woman, I recognize that we need to do more within our communities to protect women of color & to challenge rather than accept patriarchal norm. I hear "that's just the way it is" (in some form or another) too often #HipHopEd
Most dress codes are aimed at regulating women’s bodies. How is it men can take off their shirt & no problem, but for women it’s always asking “well what was she wearing?” Remember nuns & senior women have been raped. It’s not about sex, but “power over.” #HipHopEd#NoMore
I wonder if the school "dress codes" (a) sexualize girls' bodies and (b) put the responsibility of whether they're harassed onto them rather than on those who do the harassing #HipHopEd

And as teachers, we can NEVER accept the phrase “That’s just the way it is.” Tupac’s “Changes” is now playing in my head, and makes me think of all the work we still have ahead. Though it’s a fight well worth fighting! #HipHopEd
There is work that must be done by men with boys as well as healing as a community. We can't say we love women and leave this on them to address alone #hiphoped
Hip-Hop creates this mantra of “Keeping it Real” but then we are supposed to evaluate the acts of individuals apart from their music. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks ... #HipHopEd
Issues of power and oppression are intersectional, and require us ALL to step up and take care of each other, to stay #maladjusted to sexism ("misogynoir"), and disrupt it from wherever we are. #HipHopEd
Sexual assault is such a difficult topic. We want to encourage victims to come forward, but we have to demand that everyone involved has a voice. Hop hop shouldn't (even if it does) deny anyone's voice #hiphoped
Economic violence is also a thing. I know too many women in hip hop who have put in hella behind-the-scenes work only to be denied credit/recognition/payment. #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/07xkaoyf4A

How to show healthy love is something that should be priority #1 for our kids/students, yet this is something that is hardly ever addressed in our schools. This needs to change, and our kids should be allowed frequent discussion on healthy and unhealthy forms of love #HipHopEd
Our motivation to break this cycle shouldn't be "that could be our wives/mothers/sisters/daughters," it should be to do what is right regardless of affiliation or lack there of #hiphoped
Let's talk about the capitalism that enables abusers to thrive in hip hop. R. Kelly got a pass for so long because he was making a lot of money for a lot of people. We have to consciously and actively put people ahead of profits if we want things to change. #hiphoped
Agreed and this can be a lane for family and community involvement. I know that my marriage was part of my youth development work with my teens for years #HipHopEd
I too have to recognize my position in this as a white woman, I recognize that we need to do more within our communities to protect women of color & to challenge rather than accept patriarchal norm. I hear "that's just the way it is" (in some form or another) too often #HipHopEd
Yes! It should be about the fact that we are human, that we deserve dignity regardless of whether you understand or sympathize with our situation. #HipHopEd
OOOH so true! I loathe the implication that those-could-be-our-sisters-mothers-etc are special because they are functional or hold some special place in *someone else's* life!! As if their lives are not precious in their own right! Thank you for raising this point! #HipHopEd
The commercial marriage between Hip-Hop and the Adult Entertainment industry has impacted this generation of boys and young men in a traumatic way. #StayWoke#HipHopEd
I’m in schools, A LOT, and I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen boys coerce young girls into acquiescing to touch, usually a hug. We need to be connecting this expectation to deeper themes in the culture & discouraging this entitled behavior every chance we get #HipHopEd
I’m so absorbed in reading tweets on tonight’s topic I don’t even know how to formulate the multitude of thoughts running through my head #HipHopEd#ItsDeep
We must not forget that sexual violence happens to boys/men as well. Our defined role of masculinity many times presses this out of the conversation & creates spaces where silence is the preferred option #HipHopEd
Capitalism could just as likely take their livelihoods away. I'm no fan, but it does provide efficient ways to influence people...if the will is there. If you listen to most rap, you have already convinced yourself to some extent that some misogyny is tolerable...#hiphoped
Our motivation to break this cycle shouldn't be "that could be our wives/mothers/sisters/daughters," it should be to do what is right regardless of affiliation or lack there of #hiphoped
Exactly! Speaking up against Sexual assault, harassment, and misogyny should not reflect a woman’s relationship to a man but should reflect one’s humanity, period! #HipHopEd
Our motivation to break this cycle shouldn't be "that could be our wives/mothers/sisters/daughters," it should be to do what is right regardless of affiliation or lack there of #hiphoped
Truth. Had a convo with one of my young men the other day relating to Youngboy’s song “Genie,” (specifically the final verse/outro) and how my student truly wanted to find the girl of his dreams one day. He admitted that he was tired of “acting hard.” #HipHopEd
This is how capitalism works.
It is unforgiving for the poor, and hands out “get out of jail” cards to the wealthy or those who benefit the wealthy! #HipHopEd
Let's talk about the capitalism that enables abusers to thrive in hip hop. R. Kelly got a pass for so long because he was making a lot of money for a lot of people. We have to consciously and actively put people ahead of profits if we want things to change. #hiphoped
Could be part of my reluctance to address this fully. Feels like we need more acknowledgment from men to use their privilege to further validate the experiences of women & girls #HipHopEd
Love isn't based on perfection, it's based on intention; so if we love Hip-Hop we have to address the narrative and the norms that it can permeate that are damaging women and girls #HipHopEd
Like my Sis @norarahimian said earlier, we as brothers have to learn to be present and listen. We are moved by stories and the fact the many women operate in silence is because we don't listen without questioning to the point of disbelief #HipHopEd
Hmm, first thing that comes to mind is “Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry with a Beat” by Nikki Giovanni (sorry if I spelled her named incorrectly!) It’s a great book for mid grade levels! #HipHopEd
The scars of sexual harassment and assault go far beyond physical. These scars are impacting our community’s ecosystem and it’s time for us to do more than merely react. #HipHopEd
I have to shoutout colleagues like @dianerios_ppl and all the women on my team, at work, who have allowed me to learn from their experiences. #HipHopEd
Needed more than ever, but I feel you on your reluctance. We've got one we're working on that's cross sectional and every result has me thinking instantly about how to frame appropriately. #hiphoped
I have heard on several accounts how songs that used to be premiered in the club for a response, were being debuted in the strip club to see how the money flows #HipHopEd
Whatever editing help anyone needs for these critical, disruptive studies, I am more than happy to volunteer my time to you! I might not be doing the research with you, but I can help make it shine! #HipHopEd
There is a new report from Georgetown Law highlighting the spike in young adolescent girls being incarcerated in DC and a large percentage of these girls have experienced some form of abuse #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd love all the dialogue and the talk of accountability, our love for the culture, our willingness to change it and our willingness to be honest is crucial. Hope we can move past idolatry & honor the voices of victims more than ‘stars’
That makes sense. Abuse leads to feelings of worthlessness, and that to desperate and dangerous behaviors -- all as a result of hurtful/hateful people. (reminds me of a great episode of #HTGAWM !) #HipHopEd
As educators we are missing the mark if we are not working as hard to save the abused souls and spirits of our youth as we are working to put information into their minds #HipHopEd
So what will you do differently tomorrow and moving forward when it comes to addressing the cycles of sexual harassment and abuse that is in every facet our culture? #hiphoped
So many of my students can identify with this. Our juvenile justice system needs to change and take this into consideration. I’m tired of young lives being thrown to the wolves because the system doesn’t see what they’ve been through. Definitely a “soapbox” topic. #HipHopEd
