#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
Good Morning! I am glad you joined #LeadUpChat - I will be co-hosting with @PrincipalPaul - I am the Associate Supt. for Teaching and Learning with Fayetteville Public Schools (Arkansas) @fayar
Good morning! I’ve been disconnected but just returned from some much needed R&R and ready to jump back in and connect...thank you for having me.#leadupchat
As I think about the next school year my Mt. Everest is to remove barriers to teaching for teachers and learning for the learners so that ALL can meet their growth potential. I struggle with a balance of support and accountability . I need to get better. #leadupchat
A1 It's a time for me to be intentional about building and fostering relationships with and among staff. Policies and procedures can occur in an email. #leadupchat
A1. As I enter a new school year, I am planning to share with my team my desire for us to elevate our work and take it to the next level. My focus will be on how we move from good to great and maximize our impact across the state. #leadupchat
Note: Your Base Camp could be a grade level meeting, faculty meeting, principals' meeting, a meeting with parents, etc.... Today's questions are for teacher leaders, counselors, administrators, and all educators who are on a Leadership Journey! #LeadUpChat
A1: Thanks to our P, we are reconfiguring how we do meetings. Used to be 2 long days of 'hearing stuff'. Now it will be 3 half-days with focus on collaboration & 'getting stuff done'. #leadupchat
A1: our leadership team is planning to launch a new strategic plan with our staff. The first days back should be inspirational as well as a time to get ready for students #leadupchat
A1: I plan to share my goals and my vision for the new year...so that we are all on the same page. Need to make sure our train is all headed in the same direction! #LeadUpChat
A1: always start with our WHY and reminders of what our decisions should be based on: what is best for kids. Mixing in team-building activities is critical as well #leadupchat
A1: One of the nuggets I pulled from @seancovey at #NAESP18 is the importance of having only 2-3 WIGs (Wildly Important Goals) at a time because that is all that can get done.
#leadupchat
A1- My role just changed to Curriculum and Instruction with a coaching model so I am so proud to share Science and S. Studies units, PD on designing lessons, integrating technology like #FlipGridFever to broaden learning for staff and students #leadupchat
A1: As a teacher I want to share the learning I am doing over the summer with my co-workers. Look at ways to teach LA in a department that is less about us teaching from the front and more about working with Ss side by side. #leadupchat
A1: Our focus this year is going to be that #everyonematters. Putting strategies in place so that every child has a trusted adult who really knows them and is someone they can reach out to. #LeadUpChat
A1 continued focus on our why - the #wholechild - and how our actions align to each element. Everything we do should address one of these 5 key indicators #leadupchat
A1: Our "rocks": We started a big push last year with lesson design and in particular choice and voice, we will spend time talking about why a safe learning environment is critical and we always revisit our WHY #leadupchat
A1. A second goal is to communicate with clarity and focus. I want to really simplify our goals as a group:
1. To improve educator practice
2. To improve student outcomes
and keep those at the forefront of ALL we do! #leadupchat
a1 I'm excited about leading our algebra PLC this year: been reading about what it's really suppose to look like & how to lead in that direction. #leadupchat
Note: Your Base Camp could be a grade level meeting, faculty meeting, principals' meeting, a meeting with parents, etc.... Today's questions are for teacher leaders, counselors, administrators, and all educators who are on a Leadership Journey! #LeadUpChat
A1-Our vision for the journey ahead. Where do we want to go? Why? What are our steps to get there? Do this through team-building & sharing. #leadupchat
A1: Since I'm a new principal at a new bldg, I plan to share my key beliefs and non-negotiables. I also will calm any fears of me making big changes right away. And continue to build trust by building relationships first. #leadupchat
A1: One of the nuggets I pulled from @seancovey at #NAESP18 is the importance of having only 2-3 WIGs (Wildly Important Goals) at a time because that is all that can get done.
#leadupchat
A1: I plan to focus on purpose and how to “go big” and offer total support with my team of student mentors! I hope to show them how to walk the walk of leadership. #leadupchat
A1: @curriculumblog I plan to utilize the feedback I got from my SIT and we’re going to do PD around different initiatives from last year! PBIS, discipline reporting tool, and STAR testing tool. #leadupchat
This will be HUGE! Looking forward to seeing and hearing the strategies you are planning on implementing to make this a reality, my friend!
#leadupchat

I would still LOVE for our math dept to hear how you've implemented inquiry in your Alg & Geometry courses and more importantly the results. #leadupchat
A1 We will discuss the themes that emerged out of the conversations that I had with our Ts in a 1:1 format. We will discuss crafting our collective vision, verbalizing how our day-to-day mission connects to our vision, & plot goals for the year. #leadupchat
A1 as we focus on our why, we will discuss how our actions as teachers support our students and families, our actions as teachers support one another, and our actions as administrators support our learning community #leadupchat
A1: Identifying & sharing our brand. We’ll go through an exercise of identifying our personal core values and then our shared values at the school - all this to establish a new vision & mission for our site. #leadupchat
Great advice! I heard @benakallick address Habits of Mind this summer. It reminded me of the important skills that students need to become continuous learners. #LeadUpChat
For me, the best part will be to intentionally slow down and focus on a few things rather than trying to accomplish so many things at once (per my normal MO!)
#leadupchat
A1: One of the nuggets I pulled from @seancovey at #NAESP18 is the importance of having only 2-3 WIGs (Wildly Important Goals) at a time because that is all that can get done.
#leadupchat
Key element is to understand we are a team ... it is not individual races to the top, rather a team effort ... we all make it to the end ... helping /sharing knowledge and skills with each other to make the journey easier #leadupchat
A1: We will work on communicating more effectively so that we can continue to build upon the things that we have been working on. Share resources, empower others so that we can continue to build capacity #leadupchat
This is so similar to what I am doing Latoya! Set clear goals and work together toward the goals. Ultimately to build a system where all students have the chance to achieve all their possibilities. #EducationalEquity#leadupchat
A1: My Everest is going school-wide with the personalized learning model of micro-credentialing with our #UVlearn T's as part of a state-backed pilot to redesign teacher re-licensure. #leadupchat
A1: Would want to start out having staff share how they grew personally and/or professionally this summer. Sets the stage that growth is at the forefront of everything we do but ensures everyone knows that I care not just about them as professionals but as people too #leadupchat
If I were a teacher in your building, how would you want me to navigate your “non-negotiables” if I heard you and it was a completely new paradigm for me? Just something I’m chewing on. My response might be to entrench myself, because I was afraid. #leadupchat
Love the priority here, Charles, on the big rocks. Essential that we identify these, prioritize them with protected time, and engage our teams on the progress towards achieving these goals @chbellomy#leadupchat
A1. We’re going fully gamified for SUPER POWERED teacher training! Themed PD to “Build the Vision” together starting with a killer intro video and hands-on learning centers through #QRBreakIN, @breakoutEDU, and the Mr. Potato Head PDSA. https://t.co/sTI2mU3Heh#leadupchat
Some administrators ask for feedback, but they don't listen or act on the feedback. At some point educators will stop bringing their questions and concerns. Thanks for sharing your leadership journey! #LeadUpChat
Now the ultimate question...what will those priorities be? Leaning towards:
1. A school wide focus on literacy
2. Social-emotional learning
3. Personalized PD for staff.
#leadupchat
A1. A second goal is to communicate with clarity and focus. I want to really simplify our goals as a group:
1. To improve educator practice
2. To improve student outcomes
and keep those at the forefront of ALL we do! #leadupchat
A1: it’s a great time to look at things with the fresh eyes of August! What’s our purpose? How will we achieve that purpose? How can we build and grow from previous years while bringing new staff into the fold? #leadupchat
Love some Parent Edcamp! We're going year three at #UVlearn next year. Following up with the learning with food and fellowship to spark more attendance. Our T's have EXCEPTIONAL learning planned for parents! #leadupchat
A1: this will be my first year in my new role, so this could changes the next couple weeks, but student leadership opportunities and finding ways to support staff. #leadupchat
"To go from where you are to where you want to be – you have to have a dream, a goal & you have to be willing to work for it." - Jim Valvano
#edchat#leadupchat#joyfulleaders#growthmindset
.I’m a big believer of changing our mindset on the word balance. It’s not a noun or a destination. View it as a verb. It’s a daily practice. Some days are hard and some days are easier. That view will ease the “struggle” and keep you going. #leadupchat
And this demonstrates that you and the team VALUE their learning. When learners feel valued, EFFICACY spikes. And we all know the power of efficacy, right, #Hattiephiles? #leadupchat
A1: Would want to start out having staff share how they grew personally and/or professionally this summer. Sets the stage that growth is at the forefront of everything we do but ensures everyone knows that I care not just about them as professionals but as people too #leadupchat
A1 I plan to share that my philosophy as a leader is that we need to focus more on relationships, positivity, exploration, and reality and less on conformity and getting through the curriculum ..what is truly important for our kids. #leadupchat
Things are so so good. Stepping into my admin role after being an instructional coach for 3 years. This is a summer of transitions. And of course all the emotions that come with the journey. #leadupchat
A2: It is a lot easier to help each other if we are all going the same direction. A solid plan that has room for alteration is far more successful that a rigid one or no plan at all. #leadupchat
A1: An early goal of mine is to preach the power of connections. I want to create a series of electrical currents on the floors, which all lead to the center of the building, to each other. #leadupchat
A1: this will be my first year in my new role, so this could changes the next couple weeks, but student leadership opportunities and finding ways to support staff. #leadupchat
I’m also a big fan of asking the Ts what their non-negotiables are first. If it comes from them, and in line with mine, it’s a win because they see it coming from peers, Moreso than me. #leadupchat
In reply to
@curriculumblog, @KeriSnowden, @cheryljglasser
A2. Leading with intention and deliberateness creates a predictable environment for staff and sets conditions for transparency of expectations. When we know where and what the finish line is, we’re far more likely to reach it! #leadupchat
A2 the game plan and the end goal allows the entire learning community to stay focused throughout. The actions can be anchored to the end goal and the plan of action #leadupchat
This focus on building student leadership capacity is key, Randall. Cultivating this social learning skill will assist our Ss as they build their supportive learning community @Rantime#leadupchat
A2: without a game plan and clear and intentional vision, it often becomes build the ship as we fly it and throw a lot out and see what sticks—nothing sticks well... #leadupchat
How you frame things is critical, leaders can set current expectations that can always be questioned and changed, "but as a starting point I would ask for your support in . . . " #leadupchat
Q2: Helps all of us understand WHY we are working together and keeps us focused throughout the year. Goal setting is easier when we can achieve it in bits and pieces and feel successful. #LeadUpChat
A2: My gameplay for the micro-credentialing pilot is to devote all staff meetings toward our learning and development. This effort ensures MC's become one thing that does MORE, not one MORE thing TO DO! #leadupchat
A2. The 🔑 is not only planning with he end in mind but executing with it in mind as well. We need to revisit our summit, and clearly articulate what success would look like over and over again to keep us aware and focused of our end goal! #leadupchat
A2- so important to have your yearly plan laid out to meet your goal- so you can be transparent and communicate effectively, be prepared, predict and overcome barriers so nothing interferes with the goal. Maps are important to arriving at any destination. #leadupchat
A2: The key is knowing where you want to go but also to be prepared for the inevitable diversions that come up on a regular basis. You will not be able to predict every detour, but you can prepare your mind to not let setbacks completely stop you. #LeadUpChat
As teachers, we need to understand there are many non-negotiables ... there is a top in education and crap rolls down hill, but we also need to know much of the stuff does not come from our Principal or even Superintendent, ... can't blame messenger for everything #leadupchat
In reply to
@curriculumblog, @KeriSnowden, @cheryljglasser
A3 I would say the journey. Reaching the summit may not always be within sight. However, every step, no matter how small, gets you toward your end goal #leadupchat
A2: It take the mystery out of what we do. Because so much in education is unpredictable, it's important that we map out what we can. Still, it's just as important to accept when that plan isn't working and adjust. #leadupchat
Now the ultimate question...what will those priorities be? Leaning towards:
1. A school wide focus on literacy
2. Social-emotional learning
3. Personalized PD for staff.
#leadupchat
A2: A game plan can be...
--a process for collaboration
--the foundation for loose/tight coupling
--too long to implement
--the tool for laser focus
--the basis for lead/lag data
#leadupchat
A2) It's unlikely to end-up somewhere meaningful if we don't take time to think about where we want to end-up and why we want to finish there. That's priority one.
The game plan is about alignment of resources (time, money, people, etc.) to ensure we get there.
#leadupchat
A2: When I know the end goal, I know the person is intentional. If it's always, we'll see what happens, I'm wondering what that means. Outcome might not match in the end, but at least it starts with a vision. #leadupchat
This is wise advice. It is easy to start the year with goals and dreams. Too often, leaders don't show the way or share school procedures. Hope is not a strategy! #LeadUpChat
A2 Need to define the objective to guide the work with clarity. If not defined, too much fuzziness and goal may not be achieved. Aimless journey without defined goal. #leadupchat
Thank you! That sounds like a great way to transition into a new building.
The key words for the beginning of the year are shared, community, voice, and ownership. #leadupchat
A2: We are so guilty of doing too much at once in our roles as school leaders. Especially me! Teachers value your efforts to focus on one-two initiatives at a time and maximize their potential. #leadupchat
A2: When we have that focus of where we want to be, everything we do can be checked by how it's helping us reach that end goal. Disney's mission statement is 'To make people happy'. If they change or add something, will it make people happy? #leadupchat
A2. Clear vision of the destination & road map for the journey takes the guess work out of the effort. “WE WILL BE (x) BY (date y), & we’ll measure our progress by (z) along the way.”
Crystal clear communication & expectations from day 1. Essential to start with WHY. #leadupchat
A1: Let's get insanely clear on who we are, what we're about, where we're going, and how we'll get there. I'm not going to let us miss our shot for the best year ever. #leadupchat
A3: The journey is the most important based on the learning, teamwork, and culture building that takes place along the way. The summit is the bonus. #leadupchat
A2-Without a focus and plan, we become reactive to situations and things out of our control, leading to panic. With the end in mind, we know where we want to go, and despite hurdles & bumps, we still are heading in that direction. #leadupchat
A2: Beginning with the end in mind and working with teams to construct the strategies to move toward that goal, allowing time for reflection and changes if needed! #leadupchat
A2 Without a vision and a game plan/set of strategies to help us reach our goals, we approach everything we do haphazardly. Our work is to important to waste time and energy that doesn't have a clear end in mind. #leadupchat
a2 No one likes playing games they believe lead no where. Borrowing from Dan Meyer, help them feel the headache so they will see the need for aspirin & help reach for it. #leadupchat
Team on the journey... our military men and women won’t leave anyone behind when their life is on the line. Everyone should help and support their way to the top! #leadupchat
A2. Clear vision of the destination & road map for the journey takes the guess work out of the effort. “WE WILL BE (x) BY (date y), & we’ll measure our progress by (z) along the way.”
Crystal clear communication & expectations from day 1. Essential to start with WHY. #leadupchat
The work Ts do requires planning and preparation We all need to know what the end game is if we are going to prepare for it How can we expect a vision or mission to be executed if we don't know what it is we are trying to achieve, we can't be on the same page #leadupchat
A1 The power of relationships. To quote @DrJeanforkids "Every student needs at least one adult whose eyes light up when the child enters the room." How do we ensure that is true for every child in our care? #leadupchat
A1: Let's get insanely clear on who we are, what we're about, where we're going, and how we'll get there. I'm not going to let us miss our shot for the best year ever. #leadupchat
A1: That our focus should be making every moment count. Our success will be determined by our attention to detail in the present. We'll pay respect to the past and acknowledge the future but we've got to be dialed in each and every day. #leadupchat
A2 We benefit from a collective, shared vision along with action steps that serve as a guide for where we are heading. Reflection is necessary to retool as we move forward. #leadupchat
I think when our "tight" matches our values which should be loudly and publicly demonstrated continuously, people get it. Mine is professional hunger. I'm loose in how yours looks, but you better stinkin' have it at #UVlearn. #leadupchat
A2: #LeadUpChat
A vision and a game plan, allows everyone to speak the speak and know the score. It allows mental contrasting where we can compare where we want to be with where we are and match our behavior accordingly.
A2: the game plan, aka Vision, helps paint a picture for staff of where we are, and where we need to be. Be intentional with reflection time so T’s can see how they do things aligns with that vision. Be prepared to help those who need it to reach the vision by EOY. #leadupchat
A2: If any staff member was asked about your school's goal, mission, or vision, could they answer with three simple examples? #leadupchathttps://t.co/pqKFYqYt76
"With too many initiatives, we only scratch the surface and remember very little about the purpose of the latest approach, much less the reason that trendy technique was a 'must' three years ago." @gcouros#InnovatorsMindset
I also am chewing on how to prepare myself for any non-negotiables that might come out that are NOT in line with my own, or may be counter. Listening and processing and following up one on one may be the best approach. Any others? #leadupchat
This week, New York and Virginia become the first two states to require mental health education in public schools.
"Mental health issues need to be given the same dignity as physical health issues."
https://t.co/ejXpwdiWau
Now the ultimate question...what will those priorities be? Leaning towards:
1. A school wide focus on literacy
2. Social-emotional learning
3. Personalized PD for staff.
#leadupchat
we all have goals ... we all want to see students succeed, but the problem is in the "how" district buys millions of dollars in tech/software ... shows you how to use and it doesn't work in your world ... now what? Can't force square peg in round hole. #leadupchat
A2: Knowing your end goal as well as the plan for getting there provides a sense of direction for people. Uncertainty is uncomfortable and often causes people to make their own plans which may not be aligned with others #leadupchat
A2- knowing what you stand for and where you want to go allows everyone to contributed to that goal. Strong teams , and postive cultures understand that diversity in thinking and approach are positive and healthy, with common end game #leadupchat
A2: Ultimately, everyone in the school is accountable for the goals of the school- if staff don't know what they are being held accountable to, it diminishes the all hands on deck effort that might be necessary to make meaningful progress, and it diminishes TRUST too #leadupchat
I’m going to utilize the student inventory strategy that @cultofpedagogy discusses in this blog post - https://t.co/kow3oUXH6n These inventories will be more important than assessment data collection at one on one teacher meetings. #leadupchat

A2 Without a vision and a game plan/set of strategies to help us reach our goals, we approach everything we do haphazardly. Our work is to important to waste time and energy that doesn't have a clear end in mind. #leadupchat
I know that’s true for my experience. Identifying, communicating the WHY leads to understanding, clarity, & greater chance of buy in & ownership #leadupchat
A2) You have to have a clear vision of where you want to go, and plan on how to get their, which includes pitstops and considers all the challenges. Otherwise you’re just wondering around on a mountain. #leadupchat
We preach the importance of getting to know our students, but how often do we allow our faculty and staff to get to know each other? How can we model this better? Not just an ice breaker, but real conversations. #leadupchat
I want to say "hope so" but that's an unbelievably weak answer. Hmmmm. I need to address these more even if I feel like I'm being redundant. I need to be redundantly clear to ensure we can all proclaim these on the spot. #leadupchat
A2: If any staff member was asked about your school's goal, mission, or vision, could they answer with three simple examples? #leadupchathttps://t.co/pqKFYqYt76

The end in mind represents our vision made real with the next actions a team takes together — the supt must keep the vision as the central focus in front of everyone thru stories, data, curiosity, passion, team cogenerated dialogue to build learning by design #LeadUpChat
We surveyed Ss in the MS (520) and asked if they had an adult in the bldg they could go to if they needed to. The Ss who did not, had a ‘silent mentor’ who took an interest in them to support them. Worked well. #leadupchat
I knew Virginia & New York passed laws last week mandating mental health education in schools, but I didn't know just how involved VA teens were themselves in getting it passed. Teens these days are amazing & give me so much hope for our future! https://t.co/v64RQr0K93#parkland
A2: when there's a vision, a map, a plan, a purpose- you not only know where you're going but you know when you've arrived. Accountable coupled with actionable. #leadupchat

A1: This is my first year as an AP. Lots of ideas, but really want to focus on building relationships and trust with staff and students before any big changes! #LeadUpChat
What's the difference between a goal and a priority if your priorities are goals and the met goals created new goals which became priorities when the goals weren't reached in the past? #leadupchat
A2: Beginning with the end in mind helps leaders and staff visualize success. This allows the opportunity to align actions and decisions with the end goal.
#leadupchat
A3 As educators, we have the same issue w/ Ss, do we keep pace w/ the curriculum map/guide & make it to the end w/ fewer students or make sure all Ss understand the material. We must differentiate our leadership skills to support our team to reach their personal best #leadupchat
A3 The journey is where it's at. Once you reach the top, there is always something else to be done. Education is a long and winding road of success and challenges. #leadupchat
Agree, Amy. Effective, goal-oriented teams have made the important shift from reactive operations to engaging in proactive opportunities that build the team's capacity to reach collective goals @AmyHeavin#leadupchat
Thank you for joining! I have learned so much about leadership from following your tweets over the years. You are a Hall of Famer! Thanks for contributing this morning! #LeadUpChat
A2 Without a goal and a game plan, your team will never get there. With the end in clear view we can keep checking that our daily actions are true to our goals. #leadupchat
A3- it is more about the journey- learning, working, and sharing a passion ...bonds that are built this way often lead to a desire to reach an even higher summit! #leadupchat
A3: Taking the team to the top ensures that you are coming together, celebrating wins, addressing challenges, raising the heat when needed, and doing this face-to-face. Teamwork can't be done through EMAIL! And this is coming from a guy that emails his staff a lot. #leadupchat
A3: Growth is the goal! Everyone may not make it to the top this year or next, but they can grow and keep moving towards the top. The journey is how we identify what we didn't know we needed when we started and then we can reflect and adjust. #leadupchat
A3 The journey is where the learning happens whether you reach the summit or not. The growth gained through the journey makes you a better educator! #leadupchat
A3: much more important to get everyone on the journey. Small growth is still growth. Even if you don’t reach the end goal, you can celebrate the success that did happen and reflect on next steps to keep going #leadupchat
A3: The journey is more important. Just like when you’re teaching you’re lesson in the classroom and you have to just stop and change everything you’re doing...it’s the process that counts. The relationships. The learning. #LeadUpChat
A3: it’s SO important to take the team along and have buy-in and ownership. The whole team must get to the top, not just the leader who then looks back down at everyone telling them to get up there #teamworkmakesthedreamwork#leadupchat
A2: The game plan is important but the clear and consistent communication of the plan and the action steps being taken to reach our goals will dictate the effectiveness of the organization. #leadupchat
Why would I start a journey and not want to make it to the top? That would be like a baseball team saying we no longer want to win the World Series ... it is an unachievable goal ... .500 is good enough. Who would want to play for that team? #leadupchat
I guess if it can be reasonably connected, we go with it. Then monitor to ensure it benefits learners and supports a healthy school culture.
#leadupchat
Yes. I do feel our #UVlearn culture POPS. Our teachers are very proud of school and so readily connect with guests. We love our school, but maybe need to be clearer about why. #leadupchat
A3 Team on a journey comes first. The journey requires all voices, creates the experience that fosters meaning, and has the potential to build capacity in others and bring sustainability. #leadupchat
New York's Mental Health Education Act, the first law of its kind, will integrate #mentalhealth#education into Kindergarten through 12th grade curriculum in schools throughout the state. Proponents say law will help address mental illness stigma. #phlawhttps://t.co/SqtK00mlrf
A3-It is all about the journey. The journey never stops. When we say we have reached the top, do we stop? We keep going. Build the team that will go the distance on that journey! #leadupchat
A3: I often think about a short story I used to teach called "A Worn Path." It's simple and brilliant, but the premise is that the path is the thing that matters, not the destination. Getting to the top and looking down at folks seems antithetical to leadership. #leadupchat
A3 Definitely take the team on the journey! A bonus is all the things you can learn together to enrich the team and become unstoppable in reaching the summit! #leadupchat
#LeadUpChat Teamwork makes the dream work! You need a team to reach the top! May not happen in one year, but grit and determination will get your team to the top!
A3: As a coach, the journey is more important than the summit. Coaches support their athletes even if they don't achieve first place. Both the coach and the athlete learn on the journey. #leadupchat
A3: The journey is more important than reaching the top. Even if we reach our goals for this year, we will have new goals for the next. I never want to fee like we have reached the pinnacle. There is always something more we can do for our kids. #LeadUpChat
a3 I think if we ever feel like we've "reached the top," we have run out of vision. I'd rather be a support along a journey, offering ideas for strategy. #leadupchat
I have been meeting individual staff members all summer and have conducted a survey of all staff and parents. My goal is to gather their needs, wants, vision, etc. to help me prepare my back 2 school presentations. I'm a collaborative leader by nature. Not top-down. #leadupchat
Good morning #leadupchat from Barbara, counselor & author in Friendswood, TX.
A1. For 34 years, my idea has been that play is our ticket to engagement, and that has stood the test of time. Even when I started teaching HS Spanish in 1984, we played to maximize mastery and growth.
#leadupchat A2: A common vision, common expectations, common goals, all help the district, teachers, all staff focus on a 1 objective. All PD, staff meetings, grade level discussions should support the common goal.
A3. As Leaders it is our professional responsibility to stay focused. So often we are distracted by interesting sights along the way, curious about shortcuts, and looking for the shortest path instead of the best one. Great leaders embrace the journey! #leadupchat
A3: Would it be cheating to say they're both equally important? If the top is student success/growth, that's a priority. However, the journey that shifts paradigms is critical too.
#leadupchat
A3: It is important to understand that we never reach the top. We build capacity in our students to reach their post secondary goals, but we never stop working to learn and build capacity in ourselves because the road to get there is ever-changing #leadupchat
A3 As leaders, we know that it is not only important to take our teams on meaningful journeys where we all learn key lessons, but we also use the journeys to build capacity in other leaders who will encourage their future teams on meaningful journeys #leadupchat
Exactly. We were in Jackson Hole & my daughter wanted to ride a gondola to the 10,000 ft summit at Teton village, but it was late & we'd have to come right back down. Nobody wanted to go if we couldn't explore & enjoy it. #leadupchat
A3: Both...in reality there is no summit...continuous change and improvement. No Finish Line.
--Reaching and celebrating peaks along the way.
--The journey (process) is where the learning occurs.
#leadupchat
A3: The work we do is hard and the most important work in the land. We have to take the team on the journey . Put in all the supports in place that are needed, keep our eyes on the goal, and drag, push, pull each other on the journey and ultimately to the top! #leadupchat
as a different perspective: How do you make sure that anything less than the top is not viewed as a failure? I am not sure it is reasonable to think that everyone will make it to the top at the same time? #leadupchat
Why would I start a journey and not want to make it to the top? That would be like a baseball team saying we no longer want to win the World Series ... it is an unachievable goal ... .500 is good enough. Who would want to play for that team? #leadupchat
That’s a stance we’ve been taking too. Asking the Qs: what can we make it better? Is there a better way? Is there a smarter way?
If it ain’t broke, make it better.
#leadupchat
A#: IT is always about the journey! If we measure success only by the end we send powerful unspoken messages about failure and experience. My friend @JohnCahalin1 says, "100 missed sales are all learning not failures!” #leadupchat
A3: You can't reach the top without your team. It's all about the collective journey. We must ensure that we've built capacity in our teams so that we can best serve our students. #leadupchat
A2: Having a game plan and an end allows for top measurable priorities/goals to be put in place and steps to get there outlined. Being able to see the process and progress towards the end goal is key! #LeadUpChat
A3: Goals are important, but they are only stops along the way. There is no TOP, no 100% in our work. These imply that there is an end- there should be no implication that there will be an endpoint to our growth #leadupchat
A3: Making the journey with the team is the important piece. You may not reach the top but you have to take what you’ve learned and get a little closer each time. #leadupchat
I love your perspective! I think some school teams set SMART Goals and other goals out of compliance. We need to believe in the goals we are setting and then establish short-term and long-term wins. Thanks for joining this morning! #LeadUpChat
A3: "The top" might change in the middle of the year. Don't stay married to a goal that loses relevance or meaning for your team because it sounded good in June. Be courageous and dig deep to move forward. #leadupchat
The journey is pretty important but if you never reach the summit as a team then motivation will decrease. Leaders need to plan for camps along the journey to celebrate/rejuvenate in order to reach the summit. #LeadUpChat
#leadupchat A3 If your sole focus is reaching the top, you will probably end up there alone. By supporting and guiding one another the team can arrive together.
A3: I think about the literacy journey my school is on. We have grown in so many ways, let's only stop to reflect and question what's next. #leadupchat AND, look at what we were blindly doing to get started, what do we know now?
Yes, the learning is a ray, not a line segment. It keeps going and going. We do need evaluative criteria to know when we have reached certain destination points, though. There's no GPS with leadership. Like a kid in the backseat, ask, "Are we there yet?"#leadupchat
A3: Goals are important, but they are only stops along the way. There is no TOP, no 100% in our work. These imply that there is an end- there should be no implication that there will be an endpoint to our growth #leadupchat
I remember reading about a school that had their Ts painting small rocks. There was a reason for the painting, but the real reason was so they would have time to talk & have real conversations w/ no distractions. #leadupchat
A3 There is something amazing about taking the journey with your staff. #bettertogether Watching them grow as educators, and lessons learned together form such strong relationships #leadupchat
A2: Having the game plan & end in mind helps guide the journey. Helps you evaluate your progress to see if it aligns with that path.
For me, establishing periodic checkpoints is important. #leadupchat
A3: I always ask: “If we look behind us- and more importantly, look next to us- if no one is there- are we a leader?” A leader is someone that gives both roots and wings to those in which they serve. #leadupchat
In great leadership, there's always balance. I'm definitely a collaborative leader, one who builds relationships and trust while gently pushing my staff to greatness. #leadupchat
A2: Hattie at his most elemental. Learners progress when clear on where we are, where we're going, what we're working on to get there, and how that effort is going. Educators and schools must adopt that learning approach, too! #leadupchat
A3 By supporting the team, members don't get burned out and share the weight; by sacrificing members you may never get to your goal and you risk having anyone support future endeavors #leadupchat
A3: And when you do reach the top you have to keep pushing forward. If you think you'e arrived you become stagnant and fall back. No one wants to be the next #zenithtv or #blockbuster#leadupchat
A3. With a team your probably of reaching the top is increased exponentially opposed to reaching the top alone. Plus all stakeholders benefit from positive collaboration!#LeadUpChat
A1: People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it. At Base Camp, we must ground ourselves in and have clarity around our WHY. Our WHY will lead for our How and our what all school year. #LeadUpChat
A3 Depends if the top was the objective for the journey. However, things can change on the #journey and a #Leader needs to exhibit a degree of #Flexibility and perhaps the top was, with #reflection, unattainable so the plan needed to be changed. #LeadUpChat
Dissenting opinion, or push back, helps clarify the ideal outcome and involves others in making adjustments to the plan in order to achieve. #LeadUpChat
Ask: "What's the consequence of speaking your mind?" Maybe saying something that a whole bunch of others are thinking? That's a good thing! That's called brainstorming, building consensus. Voices are more important than nods of approval. #leadupchat
A4: How to be a leader:
1. Value people
2. Think of ways to add value to people
3. Look for ways to add value to people
4. Do things to add value to people
5. Encourage people to add value to people #LeadUpChat
Good point. I think so. If change is the constant...then non-negs also change to reflect new needs.
--Maybe "collective commitments" is a better term than non-neg.
#leadupchat
A3: I hope that, in education, we never arrive, we're never "there yet" because there's always more mountain to climb. That being said, it's important that we pause and take the team along with us, because we're better, stronger, more resilient and grittier together. #leadupchat
A3: It’s absolutely about the team. We are nothing without the team. “The top” also has to be a shared “top.” If it’s just a destination for me, I’m on that journey alone #leadupchat
A3: "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together."
As a leader, I want our team, our school, & our district to "go the distance."
My hope is that we excel TOGETHER in a way where we ALL succeed - ESPECIALLY each & every student!
#leadupchat
That is critical. I see that. I also know vulnerability is hard, especially as a new leader trying to demonstrate competence and that you belong. #impostersyndrome is real. #leadupchat
In reply to
@latoyadixon5, @mafost, @cheryljglasser
A4: We trust and encourage them and allow them to make mistakes, we provide them opportunities to lead and we give them specific feedback. We create a safe learning and growth environment where mistakes are part of learning just like we do for Ss. #leadupchat
A3: Each day we should get one step closer to the top. The team works together to motivate and to assist so that we can all succeed. #leadupchat#edchat@curriculumblog
A3. No question -move the team from *their* point A to *their* point B. “The top” is an illusion - we must always be pushing harder. Complacency means backsliding. To quote the noted 21st century philosopher Miley Cyrus: “there’s always gonna’ be another mountain.” #leadupchat
A4: you invest by creating a #cultureofyes where you support, break down barriers so opportunities are created and new ideas are supported and encouraged #leadupchat
A4: How to be a leader:
1. Value people
2. Think of ways to add value to people
3. Look for ways to add value to people
4. Do things to add value to people
5. Encourage people to add value to people #LeadUpChat
A4: I invest in students as leaders. At the beginning of the year, I put a group in charge of recycling, another group in charge of composting and have students help in the school garden. #leadupchat
A2: It is difficult to hit a target you can’t see. When everyone is clear on the goal and purpose- it is easier for the team to walk their collective “why”. #leadupchat
A4: Leaders have invested in me by trusting me with responsibilities, always having an open door for brainstorming, questions, or concerns, and encouraging me along the way. A simple “you’re doing great” text fuels my fire! 🔥 #leadupchat
It seems like math Ts often have a real hard time seeing ice breakers as being productive, though. Often their are trust issues associated with math and being "smart." Twitter Math Camp is a huge exception. #leadupchat
A4 Leaders invest in me when I am given the opportunity to lead from where I am. That is a vote of confidence that is an excellent motivator! #leadupchat
Q4: LISTEN. I make time in my schedule to sit down and talk and listen to my teachers. I want to know their struggles and understand what is going on in their classrooms. We can learn do much and grow our teachers by giving them a voice! #LeadUpChat
A4: I think it starts by valuing the relationship...then, it's about gently pushing outside their comfort zone...letting them know you are there to guide them, support them, and celebrate them...even it it means catching them when they fall!
#leadupchat
A4: Provide access to high quality personal & professional development opportunities, listen to their suggestions for organizational improvement and share the responsibilities with them. #leadupchat
A4: You must value people. You must value experiences. If you want to #BeTheOne you must believe in people & be driven to add value to their life. The greatest gift you can ever give another person is to believe in them. #LeadUpChat
A4: #LeadUpChat
To grow leaders:
Listen
Consider their opinions carefully
Find their passions
Delegate accordingly
Give them space
Give them feedback
Give them credit
Rinse and repeat😀
A4: I had leaders that allowed me to lead, but they also provided me honest feedback and questioned my thinking and process, requiring me to be reflective. They celebrated with me too. #leadupchat
A4: I have been so lucky to have had several mentors recognize my ability to lead and build relationships. They asked me to join committees, encouraged me to take on leadership roles. #leadupchat
BONUS CREDIT TO TODAY'S LEARNING LEADERS: #leadupchat is more than people just patting others on the back. It's a positive push to do a mirror check and consider multiple perspectives. That's why I'm all-in with this tribe!
A4: With my gr level team, I try to show/encourage them to take their niche and grow it, share it, write about, lead about it. We all learn from each other when we get passionate and hungry for learning ourselves. #leadupchat
T leaders invest in you by providing honest feedback, so you as a leader can continue to grow! You invest in them by supporting them & letting them do what they do best: teach our kids! Provide them growth opportunities & support their goals! #relationships are key! #LeadUpChat
A4- my superintendent put total faith in me, and steers me when I need nerd steering. I hope I do the same for teachers in my role, provide vision and support. #leadupchat
A4) we empower two leadership teams in our school, implement teacher led PD, and provide leadership opportunities on committees. We also include students and parents on committees. #leadupchat
YES! The faculty that plays together, stays together. We did this Potato Launch last school year and there was SO much laughter and unity!

As a student in 1998, want to know what I didn’t learn about?
- body positivity
- consent & healthy relationships
- mental health
- gender identity & orientation
- social media citizenship
As a VP in a high school, want to know what our students need to learn?
ALL of the above
A4. I invest in other leaders and myself by sharing and connecting via my passion project #leadershipwithlatoya

A4: I find out what it is that they would like to do. Some of them are natural leaders some are sleeping giants. Relationship is crucial in knowing how to support them. Others have helped me by listening, answering questions, giving advice, giving me opportunities. #leadupchat
A4-Listen. Help others see their strengths and how they can use those to impact the team. One person cannot do it all. Empower the team to be an integral part of the process. #leadupchat
Yes! And sometimes we are so passionate about a particular path that this just happens. Get others as your accountability partners early in the process to ensure it's NOT about YOU, but it's about the TEAM. #leadupchat
A4- it is important to put aspiring leaders in a position to be successful, one that capitalizes on their strengths, once experiencing success you then can strech their capacity all the while providing compassionate but honest feedback #leadupchat
Q3: Both. The journey is the learning & the arrival should be celebrated. My child's 5th gd teacher used Everest in her class this year to track difficult math goals. Arrival at each base camp was celebrated. At the top, they began to climb back down! Goals evolve. #leadupchat
A4: The words YES and YET are packed with possibilities. They empower others to do things they never thought they could. I try to be intentional about using them often. #leadupchat
This may not be popular, but if I don't finish the race than it is a failure. I then have to go back an re-evaluate and try to be better next year. Being complacent with mediocre is akin being ok with failing. #leadupchat
The #leadupchat is a local custom from Flint, Michigan. Basically, it goes like this:
You see a neighbor in the street, and he looks TERRIBLE. His eyes are bloodshot, his hair is falling out, and he looks like he’s about to puke.
So YOU say: “Lead Up?”
A4: Build leadership in everyone around.Create teacher leaders through support in the face of failure. Build capacity in the admin around you through trust in their work. All this in the service of all Ss. Listen, Listen, Listen! Support people to be their best! #leadupchat
Find opportunities for others to lead! Use the gradual release of responsibility I do- you watch, we do together, you do- I watch, you do :) Mentors are crucial for building capacity #leadupchat#LeadLAP
(New blog post) Today, up to 1 in 5 children experience a mental health disorder in a given year. Here's how we serve our most vulnerable students at our large public high school. https://t.co/AJM9Q5DlfR#NPC18#apoy18
A4: By making time for frequent and honest reflection. We actively listen and extend our conversations by answering questions with deeper questions. We leave with takeaways and serve as accountability partners for each other. ❤️ my team!
💪💪#leadupchat
A4: Doing a book study with some high school kids, working with some of our elementary Ss about ways they can lead. I’ve also had a couple of huge influences on me the last couple years @PrincipalPaul being one! Now @johnschulte84 & @KennedymMelissa are helping me! #leadupchat
A4: I think my admin has supported me by trusting me to try new things, inviting my voice, and ultimately, writing my letters of rec for grad school. #leadupchat
A4: Nothing widens the leadership gap like pride. Don't be too proud to delegate and share decision making. People are not always going to love the decisions that are made. Involve them and build for buy-in. #leadupchat
A4 Leaders don't tell you that they are leaders. They are mentors that see your full potential and through encouragement and support help you stretch yourself to become better than you were before you met them. #leadupchat
A4: Find the strengths in each team member and play to them. Find their gaps and grow them. Provide opportunities and responsibilities to practice both. We are better collectively- so time spent building capacity is time worth spending. #leadupchat
Helping others see their strengths is so important! Many do not see themselves as leaders yet they are often the ones leading without realizing. Cultivating and growing that leads to awesome rewards for many. #LeadUpChat
A4-Listen. Help others see their strengths and how they can use those to impact the team. One person cannot do it all. Empower the team to be an integral part of the process. #leadupchat
Me, too, Bethany! I always have my YES button ready SLAM! "Yet" is often heard in our lunchroom, gym, and, occasionally, over the intercom. We have about 500 @CJLuckeyDope groupies at #UVlearn, so, yeah, #ThePowerofYet is our theme song. #leadupchat
A4: The words YES and YET are packed with possibilities. They empower others to do things they never thought they could. I try to be intentional about using them often. #leadupchat
A4: It’s about trust and empowerment. I don’t have all of the answers but I can certainly help you clear obstacles so that your idea can have a chance. As long as the attempt is with our Ss’ best interests in mind, if it doesn’t work we will reflect and try again. #LeadUpChat
A4: focusing on the girls will not just students but staff and leaders too!
1. Providing opportunities to keep learning
2. Providing opportunities to serve and lead
3. Modelling leadership and failing forward when it happens
#leadupchat
This is great, demonstrates the leader is confident when they empower rather than diminish opportunities. I’ve spoken to many EDUs who feel more squashed than empowered. Great leaders encourage all to lead & help to open doors to create best experiences for learners. #leadupchat
a4 Identifying specific ways we fit together can be extremely helpful. My colleagues listen to my crazy ideas and then help refine them to make them useful. #leadupchat
There are so many individuals in this chat who have invested in me through Twitter. Thank you for sharing your perspective and your leadership journey! #leadupchat
A4: Doing a book study with some high school kids, working with some of our elementary Ss about ways they can lead. I’ve also had a couple of huge influences on me the last couple years @PrincipalPaul being one! Now @johnschulte84 & @KennedymMelissa are helping me! #leadupchat

37% students with a #mentalhealth condition 14+yrs dropped-out of high school in 2011, the highest rate of any disability group (pg.64). The good news is the drop-out rate is decreasing. https://t.co/6pYaZiK6eZ
A4. Wouldn’t be where I am today without the vote of confidence of @patton_carl.
Actual conversation:
Boss: So what do you want to do?
Me: Change the world.
Boss: Want to be an instructional coach?
Me: I’m in.

Being relentlessly self-reflective, honest about your results, and having an insatiable appetite for growth. Dude, that is ALWAYS POPULAR with this tribe! Get it! #leadupchat
This may not be popular, but if I don't finish the race than it is a failure. I then have to go back an re-evaluate and try to be better next year. Being complacent with mediocre is akin being ok with failing. #leadupchat
#leadupchat A4 plant a seed with aspiring leaders by asking what their goals are and how you can help. Let them know you believe they have unique qualities that shine. Take the time to nurture their growth.
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
too often we just copy down goals because they sound good or because successful schools have them ... or they are too easy. Goals should challenge you ... you have to work for the goals ... they are not just boxes on the checklist. #leadupchat

A4. Speaking of investing in others and yourself. There are two big lessons I tweeted about earlier this week:
1. People want connection
2. Everyone deserves to be professionally developed
That’s why I started the #leadershipwithlatoya community! #leadupchat
This is true, Leslie. Leaders must be able to identify and cultivate leadership in their team members by facilitating meaningful experiences that contribute to their growth @lmkinard#leadupchat
A4: It is important to mentor future leaders and to invest the time in them. Give them support and opportunities to lead. We all benefit from having strong, knowledgeable, and compassionate leaders. #leadupchat
Thank you for that Steven - the PLN of educators has built a context for sharing our voices, ideas, resources that has accelerated our own learning beyond the walls of schools and districts - a movement :) -#LeadUpChat
A4. Already read amazing answers to this question! A few of you mentioned “pushing out of your comfort zone”...I think that piece is imperative in the journey to becoming a stronger leader. #LeadUpChat
A5: #UVlearn teachers, we are all tackling a micro-credential this fall. Could be trauma-responsiveness, could be research-based reading strategies, could be something more specific to you and your needs. HELP ME generate some ways to celebrate! #leadupchat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
A4: Teacher-led committees, teacher initiated projects, teachers leading prof. dev. sessions, teachers chairing campus initiatives. Each staff member has a leadership part to play. #leadupchat
A5 It is imperative that leaders celebrate small wins because this helps the team build momentum as we move forward to the larger goals. Celebrations communicate to the team that we value their efforts and need their energy as we move forward #leadupchat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
It’s also a part of community development. Tuckman’s model is salient here. Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing. We need to embrace the storm because it strengthens our norms! #leadupchat
In reply to
@ObrownOliver, @mellomama6, @LaneWalker2, @latoyadixon5
A5 It's important to celebrate wins and challenges. A win makes us better because we've overcome a challenge. Hugs, high fives, handshakes, handwritten notes, jeans day- it's the little things that build relationships that make the difference. #leadupchat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
A5- recognize the team that contributed to those wins, take time to “smell the roses” and enjoy the wins. Write about the wins and the process...#leadupchat
yes ... too many teachers are ok with where they are ... have the "well, my test scores are good" attitude that they are unwilling to make adjustments that could make them even more effective. #leadupchat
A5- I’m going to put credit where credit is due and celebrate with the teachers, the ones in the trenches, making visions and plans come to life...I will recognize them and each small step we will dance, eat, run, or do something outrageous and incredible #leadupchat
A1. Celebrating small wins and progress is necessary to keep momentum! We all need a round of applause periodically because it helps us keep going! Encouragement and support must always be coupled with pushing others to greatness! #leadupchat
A5: Being intentional and purposeful...
1. Handwritten notes to staff
2. Good news call to students' parents
3. Social media celebrations for both
#leadupchat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
A5: 1:1 is my favorite way to celebrate incremental growth, in person, personal notes. I also like to celebrate the teacher and the students together. Recognition and sharing with PLC's, content teams are great too #leadupchat
A5: the key is being intentional about celebrating even the little things. We must celebrate anything and everything to build strong cultures—use food, social media, personal connections, dance parties—whatever it takes 👍 #leadupchat
A5: Start by calling them out. It is so hard to see them when the “big picture” goal is often the focus. But if we are not reaching those intermittent goals along the way- we could get lost. Use them as trail markers. #leadupchat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
A4: Investing in others needs to be on our minds when we tweet. If your last 5 tweets (during the school year) have to do with individual accomplishment or pictures of oneself (not staff or kids), delete and try again. Teachers notice this. #leadupchat
A4: It’s about trust and empowerment. I don’t have all of the answers but I can certainly help you clear obstacles so that your idea can have a chance. As long as the attempt is with our Ss’ best interests in mind, if it doesn’t work we will reflect and try again. #LeadUpChat
A5: I always feel like a good old-fashioned note is key to affirming people and celebrating their success. Better yet, head out and affirm them F2F. What we appreciate, appreciates!
Of course, Ts love the gift of time, too, so cover a duty and it's like gold!
#leadupchat
A5: One idea that I am going to implement this year is “The Best Thing I Saw Today”. Announce this on our intercom at dismissal - could be anything that I saw a student or staff member do. We need to recognize the daily wins. They all add up. #LeadUpChat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
A5: Intentionality. We wrote it in to our school improvement plan to celebrate the contributions and recognize the excellence around us. We've set timelines to hold ourselves accountable with the caveat that we don't rest on "used to's" or make excuses. #leadupchat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
Personal notes to people are pretty valuable! I will be intentional about being observant of people's efforts AND accomplishments and acknowledge those wins! #leadupchat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
A5: Have key people recognized by the school board at the beginning of the meeting. Break down walls built in your culture by acknowledging excellence everyday. It’s your choice by your actions. Be the difference you want to see. #leadupchat
A5: One of my goals this year is just take more frequent "check-ins" and to gauge my progress by looking back as well as forward. My mistake in the past has only been measuring the miles to go and letting the climb ahead discourage me. #leadupchat
A5-Hand-written notes, personal conversations, and sometimes a tray of cookies are awesome ways to celebrate those small wins! As with an intentional plan, celebrate in intentional ways! #leadupchat
I am so excited to have your continued leadership in the #WildcatCorridor - What a blessing for the @southoseahawks to have your innovative ideas and heart for Ss providing support to their Ts this year. @iracoyote has grown w/ your growth! #leadupchat
In reply to
@lorrah_hogue, @southoseahawks, @IRaCoyote
That’s phenomenal! All of value of putting the right people in the right roles. If someone is placed in a position and doesn’t believe in their role, impact will never be as strong! #leadupchat
A5: I use social media to celebrate your T’s and S’s hard work! If you want the momentum to continue, you must take time to celebrate victories and recognize the hard work of others! #leadupchat
A5: The key is to actually celebrate those moments. Share. High five people. Congratulate. Write a little note. Take a moment to enjoy the success.
#LeadUpChat
A4 I had the best mentors when I was a VP. They encouraged me, gave me constructive feedback, shared their experiences with me and allowed me to participate in all areas of leadership. They pushed me out of my comfort zone regularly. I am forever grateful #leadupchat
A5: We celebrate successes during meetings, in morning announcements, and sometimes surprise students and staff throughout the day with treats in the hall. We like to celebrate everything and anything to keep morale up, because working in a public school is HARD! #LeadUpChat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
A3: Our school is all about the team process and it has taken us far! Some great insight on this topic in the book, Eat More Ice Cream! Thanks for the book suggestion @RESPrincipal_A#LeadUpChat
These items are very impactful and build trusting relationships. I love good calls home and have sent postcards to Ss. Working on doing same with staff. #leadupchat
A5 Jumping in late, but one thing I want to do is celebrate small victories and personal successes for teachers and students at our staff meetings twice a month. It will allow us to get to know each other better and see the good things that are happening #LeadUpChat
A5: Set incremental check points and celebrate like crazy; making sure to intentionally celebrate the "team effort". Doing something fun at meeting is always big for us. Highlighting teams and successes in weekly newsletters or morning announcements is on my list . #leadupchat
A5: This is so true. #TWTBlog is getting ready to launch our August series, "This is the Year..." I've been thinking about how hurdles are in plain site on a track but we still can fall. #leadupchat
ATTN: Please excuse the spam, folks. It is in no way endorsed by or reflective of what we are about. Unfortunately, when we have so much traction in the Twitterverse, junk pops up. Again, we apologize. #leadupchat
A5. I want to do a better job of giving positive feedback to the folks who do a great job everyday. I tend to focus on the gaps and weaknesses in my leadership rather than my strengths and that spills over into how I give feedback. Must improve that this year. #leadupchat
One of the best things I ever did was mailing home a card to a staff member's emergency contact celebrating the contributions that staff member makes to our community!
#leadupchat
These items are very impactful and build trusting relationships. I love good calls home and have sent postcards to Ss. Working on doing same with staff. #leadupchat
Missed this chat, but what a powerful question!!! I can’t help but ask... What good is it to have reached the top without any of your team members behind you? For me, the journey to reach the top 🌟together🌟 is what it’s all about. #LeadUpChat
Hi... sneaking in to answer... A5 - Celebrating small wins is not just a good idea, it is CRUCIAL. This helps remove a perfectionist attitude that deteriorates motivation and create real endorphins that encourage us to keep going. https://t.co/Sk13J5ZfBu#LeadUpChat
A5. Every Thursday we send out a staff newsletter w/ teacher #shoutOuts (inspired by @ECET2natl). Include 3-5 quick & specific write-ups of high level teaching / teachers, with embedded videos, gifs, and pics, plus links to lesson plans. Make the awesome transparent! #leadupchat
Q5: When you are going through the school year or climbing a mountain, it is important to celebrate small wins. How will you celebrate small wins this year? #LeadUpChat
A5: Those frequent check-ins are so important too. Having a buddy to share the journey with is part of that. We all need to keep looking at what's ahead and where we've been. #leadupchat
A5: One idea that I am going to implement this year is “The Best Thing I Saw Today”. Announce this on our intercom at dismissal - could be anything that I saw a student or staff member do. We need to recognize the daily wins. They all add up. #LeadUpChat

A4: Investing in others needs to be on our minds when we tweet. If your last 5 tweets (during the school year) have to do with individual accomplishment or pictures of oneself (not staff or kids), delete and try again. Teachers notice this. #leadupchat
A6: Always in a state of reflection- but my blog is where I let it all out. That and great convos with great people! https://t.co/VZRlzPICTo#leadupchat
Good point. If naysayers are squeaking, our celebration needs to overshadow. Not to say we ignore the criticism, just that we should not be driven by it. #leadupchat
The "If it ain't broke . . ." mentality can mask a hidden disease. Auto-immune diseases often have no outward signs, but they are still deadly. Complacency is like that. What can we do to offer a "test" for teachers to see their true health as educators? #leadupchat
"Buddy" being the key word here. @KennedymMelissa@johnschulte84 and I talk about this a lot. We are thought partners, committed colleagues, but, above all, friends. This has such a powerful impact on our schools, not too mention on US! #leadupchat#313teach

The definition of "top" in education, in my view, is - is the individual reaching maximum potential ... are my expectations high enough for that individual. Can they be successful even with an impairment? #leadupchat
A6: Just recently started participating in twitter chats and I’m loving all the blogs. I keep tinkering with the idea of starting one (pretty sure my mom would be the only reader 😂), but I love the idea of reflecting through writing. #leadupchat
A6: I may try a few ways, blog more regularly, podcasting, giving my colleagues more opportunities to provide direct feedback to me, and there’s always the drive home... #leadupchat
A6. My blog is key to my reflections. I write for many reasons:
1. To release
2. To clarify
3. To learn
4. To express and share
5. To hold myself accountable #leadupchat
A5: The celebrations need to be varied and frequent. Just a part of the communication, it doesn't have to be a big spectacle, it becomes more comfortable when it's more common. #leadupchat

A6: I am going to focus on self reflection. My goal is to do a little more meditation and a little more exercise to stay healthy, both physically and emotionally throughout the year. #LeadUpChat
A5 Honestly- having administration in my classroom interacting with kids means a whole lot and is often overlooked as a way of celebrating- I know admin cares, trusts me, has by back, etc. when they take the time to see/experience what I actually do day to day :) #leadupchat
A6: I use my exercise time to reflect as well as when I blog—need to keep on that more. I also try and end each day reflecting 3 things I could/should have done better or differently #leadupchat
A6: I'm going to keep blogging at https://t.co/gZEIkld67r but I'm also partnering with @prosigndesignco on a Podcasting venture. Trying my first one this week ... eeek ... with school adjustment counselor @LicswAmanda ~ the focus will be on walking the talk. #leadupchat
I don't offer a test ... I listen to what a teacher wants to accomplish and then give them options beyond what is on their plan. "Have you ever thought about doing it like this?" #leadupchat
A6 I reflect often and wherever and with whoever I can. My nightly run or workout is where I do most of my reflecting. I also call up fellow principals and get their perspective. And I ask for feedback from my staff. I need to know what they think so I can be better #leadupchat
Late to th show...A5 small wins lead to big victories and must be celebrated/acknowledged. A simple positive comment/gesture can help reinforce the good feelings of a small win thereby encouraging the victor to keep pursuing those wins. #leadupchat
The NC Ed Leaders Summer Blog Series has arrived!
Check out our first post by @lmkinard, principal of Thomasville High School and a 2017 @ASCD Emerging Leader...
"No Joke! - Reflections of a first year principal"

Blogging has been a life and game changer for me! We all have a story to tell and people connect to our stories. Here are some blog posts on blogging (😂) I wrote a few years ago- If you are interested: https://t.co/ys8zCBupTo#leadupchat
And getting down on the floor, showing real interest in who they are and what they are doing. @btpeet You do this so well. Always have loved that quality in you. #leadupchat
A6: I constantly reflect every evening and morning going into the new day. My first couple years of teaching I benefited from having a journal and I think I’m going to start that up again. #leadupchat
A6: Our Voxer group as an elementary admin team is hit daily, on many occasions, multiple times daily. It's our safe place to reflect without judgment, dream without limits, and, most importantly, laugh our butts off. @KennedymMelissa@johnschulte84#leadupchat
A6: Building time I to my daily schedule to write. Hopefully this will lead to blogging which I have found to be a tremendous form of reflection. #leadupchat
A6. Launching a weekly podcast, AND I just finished writing a book manuscript (55,000 words!). Anybody out there know how to strike up a conversation with a specific high-engagement educational book publisher without coming across as a rube or a total fanboy!? #leadupchat
With so many mentions today on building relationship for B2School...I recommend

I've had a lot of wins this year. I need to celebrate:
-Teacher of the year (Nominated by colleagues at my school.
-2018 US DOE Green Ribbon School.
- WGU Excellence award for writing a great fraction unit: https://t.co/Hc1EQVrIrQ#Leadupchat
A6 I constantly reflect ... have not been a consistent blogger. Started but then could not find the time to focus on writing. May start writing again...not sure if it will result in blogging but I will write. #leadupchat
A6: I keep notes about the great & the not-so-great. The summer is usually when I can reflect more organically over lessons or ideas without time pressures. Sometimes I appreciate the time to “let it marinate.” #leadupchat
A5 plan to me more aware of everyone's workplace love language of appreciation. A public shout out doesn't appreciate if it humiliates the person. #leadupchathttps://t.co/kwQaLo2iUb
A6 for me it happens through writing, listening to birds awake in the earliest moments of morning, capturing images of built and natural environments with my camera and going thru those files later to look for patterns - #LeadUpChat
A6: Exercise, setting some time my schedule to THINK! A great mentor one time told me to make sure to schedule time to read and reflect ; and unless the building is on fire or there is a true student/teacher emergency don't give that time up! I'm going to work on that.#leadupchat
Thanks for sharing! Saved it to read in a bit. Doing session on “Culture” for leaders in a few weeks. Revamping this one from earlier in summer. #leadupchat
Criticism is part of it. Even harsh critics can be helpful. Requires a good bit of filtering though! Turning criticism into a win: find the thing in the criticism you agree with and can act on even a small thing. And do it. Might be the thing that turns it all around. #leadupchat
@curriculumblog Off to the dentist! Thank you for another great chat! Added so many great leaders to my PLN today! Looking forward to another year of growing thanks to all of you! #leadupchat
Thank you for joining this week's chat! Enjoy the climb and the Leadership Journey! Whether you are a teacher leader, assistant principal, administrative assistant, ELA Director, or Supt. families are counting on you and your team! #LeadUpChat
