Hi Everyone! This is Barbara joining #rethink_learning to discuss being #resilient - I'm in Oakland, CA where the sun is shining and I'm learning about resilience from my granddaughter next to me. She told me not to be late for our chat. :o)
A1: I think the key to resilience is making something out of what appears to be nothing. Even when you make a mistake or your students fall short, continue to motivate them (or yourself!) to "begin again" and keep pushing for mastery. #rethink_learning
Bouncing back is key. It's cliche, but when looking at a situation as a WIN or a LOSS, start referring to the LOSS as a LESSON. You can always learn from mistakes and make your situation better than originally thought. #rethink_learning
A1: Resilience is about adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress. It means “bouncing back” from difficult experiences #rethink_learning
A1 Resilience means having many pathways out when adversity occurs or we are faced with a challenge. Resilience doesn’t just happen. It must be prepared for. #rethink_learning
A2: Often times these people have suffered disappointment in some or another in their lives. Resilient people can also be competitive or have a fear of what others might think, therefore they are always striving to accomplish their goals or coming out on top. #rethink_learning
A2: Here are some traits for being #resilient: perseverance, grit, not giving up, learning from failure, a strong sense of control, problem-solving skills, and it doesn't hurt to have a good sense of humor #rethink_learning
A2: Hi Jace! I think everyone is afraid of falling and resilience may be the fortitude to try anyway - and as you said to pick yourself up and try again. #rethink_learning
A3: Keeping your end goal in mind. Even the greatest in various industries today have failed, but they didn't let the fear of what other people said stop them from pushing on and achieving their dreams. #rethink_learning
A3: a) I have goals I'd like to meet so that keeps me going; b) knowing there are ppl who are less fortunate then me also keeps me going, c) great family and friends who push me and tell me I can do it. #rethink_learning
A2 Self efficacy and self awareness are key to resilience. When we know our strengths and utilize them daily we create a type of “muscle memory” where we engage the strengths needed at the time. Strengths awareness is a practice we can call upon when needed #rethink_learning
A3: My ideas for #resiliency: try not to solve problems with the same thinking that created them, control my emotions, be prepared for uncertainty, learn from mistakes, and be okay to let go and learn from others #rethink_learning

Continually maintaining a thrivng wellbeing so I am in a healthy, productive mindset when faced with a challenge. And continually using my strengths in a producive way so they become a natural part ofwho I am and how I perform. #rethink_learning
A1 - Resilience to me is being able to reflect, adjust, adapt and stay calm under situations that may be stressful. It also is thinking about how our actions will help us and others #rethink_learning
You can't beat a great support system - family, friends, and colleagues. People you trust to throw you back into the ring when you feel like giving up. #rethink_learning
A2 - People who are resilient find ways to make things work. They don’t make excuses , but rather seek to improve the lives of those around them. They are positive people and view the world as glass half full. #rethink_learning
A3 - I try to always see the bright side of things. There will be issues in our life that challenge us. I accept and want those challenges to make me better. It’s also realizing that most stuff that causes us stress is usually not as important as we think. #rethink_learning
A4 - List below
* model positivity
* allow them to problem solve
* provide multiple avenues for success
* discuss strategies when problems arise.
* help them see that challenges and failure aren’t always bad.

It's even tougher as a principal to motivate teachers if you are stuck in your own comfort zone. Thankful for PD experiences on Twitter to keep me engaged and motivated. #rethink_learning
A4: a) productive struggle, b) model and show examples, c) practice yoga and meditation d) culture of failure and growth mindset, e) set them up for failure and see what happens :) #rethink_learning
Thanks for mentioning this @AndrewJMills All of us need to model #resiliency - it is something for principals to do also so they can be there for teachers and students #rethink_learning

#rethink_learning A4. By letting them know you care abt them and believe in them. Create an environment where it's ok to make mistakes..We learn together and find solutions together
A4: As a 9-12 principal, I stress the importance of making decisions & independently thinking without always relying on a parent. While we partner & love parents, they too sometimes struggle with letting go. #rethink_learning
Resilience is part engrained in us and also learned through experience. You can help develop it, but for many it takes practice and tons of reflection. #rethink_learning
A4:
* Create a safe space for trial and error - encourage mutual support
* WAIT TIME - Don't give them the answer too quickly
* Scientist mentality - experiments lead to discovery
* Celebrate failures as learning and then ask what's next

I like the wait time. We've all been in a time crunch and rush through answers on an assignment, but I like how @mrronclark_ makes the student answer, even if it takes them time. #rethink_learning
