#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
We want to welcome you this morning to #LeadUpChat. Please introduce yourself and where you are from. Excited to be co-hosting with edleader and my incredible better half, @vealheidi!
Good morning tribe! Jeff here, co-creator of #LeadUpChat, joining you on an already hot day in McKinney, Texas! I'm very excited to welcome as my co-host @vealheidi, not only an amazing edleader but also my better half.
Hey hold my seat, I am on my way over from #EduGladiators#leadupchat Kathy, instructional coach looking for a new assignment and looking forward to the NEW Normal!
Hi, friends! Sara from Cincinnati here. Brand new Asst. Principal (yay!). Joining for a few minutes before I run some errands. Happy Saturday, y'all!! #leadupchat
A1: We talk about this often, but it starts with the relationships. People will commit and find value when they know they are supported and appreciated.
Compliance is what you get with checklists...
#leadupchat
A1: I think for me it starts with my instruction and in my classroom. How do I make reading/writing meaningful & purposeful for Ss and not just "another assignment" they have to complete. Real World application. #leadupchat
A1 We have to determine what we mean when we say "value." Because much of the way it is being used has to do with the same checklists/production/ numbers mindset it always has. Real value lies in relationships and creating students who see meaning in their learning. #leadupchat
A1: Creating value starts with creative connections. Cultivating trust, inspiring creativity, encouraging risk-taking. You get what you model, right? It starts with you bravely taking the first step & hoping others follow along because it's a fun journey! #leadupchat
A1) it doesn't happen overnight. You must build this trust through relationships, and fairness, but also an unflinching desire to put students first. Tough to balance but worth it! #LeadUpChat
A1 This can be difficult and takes time. For me it has been and still is a balance between allowing for baby steps and "gentle" pushes toward the culture we want in our building. Too important to our learners not to push. #leadupchat
Throwing everyone in the deep end today with this first Q! Today is all about the "new normal" and embracing the realities that exist around us in 2018 education. No going back to 1985! #LeadUpChat
A1: Authentic relationship building that equates to investment of others will help us create value that goes beyond even what we first envision. #leadupchat
A1: By supporting others to grow in ways that positively impact student learning, helping them to see strengths they may not know they have, and by getting in there and walking the talk alongside them #leadupchat
A1: I think that the shift is built on the relationships with your students, as well as, other faculty members. We have to understand each other on our own unique strengths and build that culture from there. #leadupchat
A1) So important to become a creator of connections and ask powerful questions!
People need to be heard and have a way to contribute.
Same for kids! #LeadUpChat
I so agree. It is so important to have Ss doing the work of real readers and writers, not "fake" assignments-- dioramas, scene recreations, question packets... #leadupchat
A1 We start change by listening and building trusting relationships. Change is relational, not transactional - wise words from my instructional coach colleague @nancyhenry2013 here in Ottawa ON #leadupchat
A1: As we write curriculum, we think about purposeful tasks and assessments as well. It's not just checking off standards and ATL's etc, but how valuable is our instructional "path" if you will. #leadupchat
A1 Creating value doesn’t happen overnight. It’s cultivated through dedication and relationships. Building up instead of compliance. Showing others the value themselves and the output they can do. #LeadUpchat
A1) part 2. I think this is why it's so important to be clear, and just like with students let folks know the "why" behind what we are doing, if at all possible. #LeadUpChat
A1: Let students lead. To create true value and not just checklist we must let students lead activities, discussions, and service projects and have a true voice and say in the classroom environment. #leadupchat
A1 We create value when we prioritize growing our team, being purposeful in our actions to achieve our collective vision, and encouraging our team to increase their own leadership capacity. Completing tasks for tasks sake creates unproductive busyness, not growth #leadupchat
When people feel listened to and valued, they will move mountains to accomplish a collective goal! Purposeful, meaningful work is a powerful motivator. #leadupchat

There was a book I read when I started as an admin called "If You Don't Feed the Teachers, They Eat the Students"...it reminded me about the importance of authentic, positive feedback, connection, and appreciation.
#LeadUpChat
A1.c -- One challenge is that I think our students are hungry for this approach. The challenge is with parents who did not learn this way. They sometimes don't think this is what school should be like. #LeadUpChat
A1 Creating value means building relationships first, only then will meangingful learning happen Creating value in science means making instruction meaningful and relevant. Starting with the why, giving purpose to the learning #leadupchat
A1: Building relationships and spotlighting Ts strengths while fostering a sense ownership is huge. When Ts realize they have something that can add value, maybe something others don’t have, confidence grows and value is added to the school as a whole. #Leadupchat
A1: Letting teachers know we value, acknowledge, & appreciate their everyday efforts-showing up, helping students grow, creating safe spaces, being creative. Need to keep it going ALL year-constantly saying thank-you & recognizing them. Ss need and Ts need it, too! #leadupchat
A1: I also think about Building Safety Team. Again not just checking off a list, but really thinking deeply about plans and procedures. How they impact Ss and staff. Looking at many perspectives and scenarios. #leadupchat
Three ways paradigms shift; top down, bottom up (rebellion/revolution), or from the middle (sabotage and building the rebellion) #leadupchat#cantbelieveimsayingthisoutloud
A1 @gcouros advised me to quit coddling my teachers in some regards. Upon reflection I realized that was exactly what I was doing. If it is important than we all need to move forward together. #leadupchat
Good morning! Live from the #kidneywalk in Charlotte, NC in memory of my cousin Audrey! Latoya, checking in as I can with the awesome #LeadUpChat team!
A1: I do not know of a checklist that has brought a staff together other than complaining with the door closed about the checklist. Creating a school culture that is awesome comes from trust and celebrating greatness. #leadupchat
A1 Leadership must model the culture they want to create. Ts are more likely to step outside their comfort zones and become risk takers when they see it in action around them. Actions speak louder than words! #leadupchat
A1 Anything we want to teach we have to model. Giving positive feedback, allowing others to take risks and trusting them to do their best sends a powerful message & changes the culture of the school #leadupchat
It seems so simple, yet it is so often ignored...
If the only tool you use from your toolbox is a hammer, the best you will get is minimal compliance...
#LeadUpChat
A1b: And paradigm shifts require leadership that focuses on the long game.
❌ Pendulum swings
❌ Initiative fatigue
❌ Surface level factors
❌ Ratings-focused
❌ Games of test scores
#leadupchat#edleadership
I believe the same as an instructional coach, relationships first, starting with the why. The why is "moving student learning forward" We will do what it takes together. We are a team, we have the same goals.Together we are better! #leadupchat
A2. We have to 1st educate all stakeholders to include parents, elected officials the true purpose of education which I feel is to facilitate better people who contribute to society & not test takers. #LeadUpChat
A1: I believe in the following:
1. Communicate the Purpose
2. Identify Desired Outcomes
3. Establish a Task Force or Committee
4. Listen to Multiple Perspectives
5. Develop an Implementation Plan
6. Empower Others
7. Celebrate Small Wins
#LeadUpChat
A1: We must leverage and harness the leadership and talents that exist within our team. Creativity and innovation are muscles that require proactive coaching to be cultivated and developed. Create a filter centered around Ss, not compliance. #LeadUpChat
Q2: In Dr. Bears book, Coding as a Playground, she explains "Although playpens are safe, playgrounds provide infinite possibility for growth and learning." #LeadUpChat
Q2: In Dr. Bears book, Coding as a Playground, she explains "Although playpens are safe, playgrounds provide infinite possibiiite for growth and learning." #LeadUpChat
So true! I know I feel much better when I have to walk my talk right along with my teachers. After all we are all in this together-or should be. #leadupchat
A1) We have to get real about what evidence of learning means, the value we hold around the process product. This means..
-no more busy seat work
-a commitment to high levels of learning.
-work grounded in relationships first
-transference of ideas across contexts.
#LeadUpChat
Agree, Michelle. Leaders should be the vision personified. Requires intentional action each day to demonstrate where we want to go as a team #leadupchat
A1: We must leverage and harness the leadership and talents that exist within our team. Creativity and innovation are muscles that require proactive coaching to be cultivated and developed. Create a culture centered around Ss, not compliance. #LeadUpChat
A1: We all have the opportunity and the responsibility to make life better, not worse, for everyone around us. That mission encompasses everything we do, from the words we speak to the message our presence sends. #LeadUpChat#Path2Serendipity
A1 Our coaching team has been working on strengthening our listening skills. It's amazing how quickly implementing better listening skills has positively impacted our school #leadupchat
I’d start with his book. It’s pretty impactful and has a ton of application in the education setting. Keeping in mind what we are actually trying to do is change a government system that is designed to resist change https://t.co/5CcuXb25nL#leadupchat
A1 We create value when we prioritize growing our team, being purposeful in our actions to achieve our collective vision, and encouraging our team to increase their own leadership capacity. Completing tasks for tasks sake creates unproductive busyness, not growth #leadupchat
I know of plenty of "superstars" that are failing to shine their brightest just because they feel unvalidated at their school. Their classroom is amazing but the potential to impact more students throughout the school is lost. Sad their talents are not being tapped! #leadupchat
A2: We tore down our computer lab to create an innovation lab/maker space.
Like a playground, sometimes you fall down and dust yourself off and learn from the experience...you make changes and figure things out to make it even better.
#leadupchat
Q2: In Dr. Bears book, Coding as a Playground, she explains "Although playpens are safe, playgrounds provide infinite possibility for growth and learning." #LeadUpChat
We have been on this journey for quite a few years. Some of our teachers were not taking baby steps and some have taken giant leaps. I need to be more directive with some by creating a goal we are all working toward-no exceptions. #leadupchat
A2 My science circus where we play with enagging phenomena and brainstorm questions to investigate where we are thinking and speaking like scientists. Adult learners like myself enjoy learning while playing #leadupchat
RTQ2: In Dr. Bears book, Coding as a Playground, she explains "Although playpens are safe, playgrounds provide infinite possibility for growth and learning." #LeadUpChat
A2) when I am in the moment, responding directly the students in front of me, not just powering through my lesson plan. These moments are like impromptu jazz solos and to me the artistry and heart of good teaching. #leadupchat
A2: Very specifically, the way this student embraced this project and made it her own. https://t.co/CQ8Dg6Ex4p#LeadUpChat -- just one student example from this year.
Q2: In Dr. Bears book, Coding as a Playground, she explains "Although playpens are safe, playgrounds provide infinite possibility for growth and learning." #LeadUpChat
Q2: In Dr. Bears book, Coding as a Playground, she explains "Although playpens are safe, playgrounds provide infinite possibility for growth and learning." #LeadUpChat
A2: I let my students tackle community problems...like summer slide. They worked together to bring the community and parents of students together to find summer opportunities to push students. When kids are given opportunities to help they grow exponentially. ❤️ #leadupchat
Q2: In Dr. Bears book, Coding as a Playground, she explains "Although playpens are safe, playgrounds provide infinite possibility for growth and learning." #LeadUpChat
A2 When teacher coach collaboration is a playground. By starting with a learning target, what we want students to know then the possibilities are endless as to how we meet that target. Together e are better! #leadupchat
A2: I experienced a playground moment of endless possibilities when writing a grant with a group of teachers. Through open ended brain dumping all possibilities, it grew to something awesome! #LeadUpChat
We have spent a long time working on goals toward a culture of value. Some have not made significant progress. He was basically saying to me, "if it is important, than make it an expectation." #leadupchat
A2: Too often Principal meetings begin with a 3 hour agenda. It is difficult to ask your thought leaders to contribute when the meeting is designed for compliance. #leadupchat
A2: I Haven't.
But I could see coding as a core language taught in grades 3-6 and an elective in PreK-2.
Could you imagine the amazing creations for #FuturEd our kids would make?
#leadupchat
Agree. But the problem comes back to accountability. If some do and others don’t, that widens the gap potentially, not closed it. I tend to observe certain teachers engaging. Who isn’t here? Why aren’t they here? What Ss are they molding and shaping? #leadupchat
A2 Success and products of learning don’t always happen in a boxed in setting. Creating an environment to cultivate success in a larger setting shows authenticity and out of the box success as well. #LeadUpchat
#leadupchat A1 Walk the walk!
It sounds simple enough, but yet elusive. Leaders have to be brave enough to stop checking the boxes (if able) and focus on innovation.
I had the resources to create a tech lending library for our #prek classrooms. I started by first giving teachers their own playground experience to try it out themselves & then modeled in many classrooms. Goal = get the tech in the kids’ hands! #leadupchat
We are all moving toward digital growth portfolios-teacher and student. I have two leader teachers helping and it I have set it up so it is not going to be optional. Most are already there, but some need to put in some difficult work. They can! We can! #leadupchat
A2: Ts @IRaCoyote have been working on all kinds of creative endeavors with Ss: #geniushour, student-created and produced #podcasts, TedX type talks, design thinking challenges... the list goes on. Very exciting to see them willing to take risks #leadupchat
A2 Generative, playground mentality abounds in @chriscardill's 7/8 classroom - Ss are given opportunities to decide what they will read and practice with the strategies that will help them make meaning #LAMPocdsb#leadupchat
A2 at the elementary level this most often happens through our LMS. Some have STEAM Fridays while others incorporate it into weekly library visits. Very excited about changing our out dated Comp Foundations rotation into a STEM rotation for K-5 next year! #leadupchat
A2) Writing live in front of students. Sometimes failing, but always having fun and showing them it's okay not to be perfect, that learning is messy sometimes but that's what makes it fun. #leadupchat
A2. I’ve taken more time to be creative with my #leadershipwithlatoya work, podcast, book, blog, etc. it’s meant wot to me. Keeps my heart happy! #LeadUpChat
A2: Too often Principal meetings begin with a 3 hour agenda. It is difficult to ask your thought leaders to contribute when the meeting is designed for compliance. #leadupchat
A2 When we put out all the new classroom library books and let students explore, there's definitely a playful feeling #leadupchathttps://t.co/ogJh2038Bp
A2: We revamped our tiered system of support for Ss behavior this year & so fun to work as a team to re-imagine how we can best support all of our Ss so they learn the SEL skills they need to be successful. And we are doing it all through a trauma-sensitive lens. #leadupchat
A2 We've jumped on the @BitsboxKids coding bandwagon getting our students to code apps. Loving the potential and ease of use for ages 6-12. #leadupchat
A2) Writing live in front of students. Sometimes failing, but always having fun and showing them it's okay not to be perfect, that learning is messy sometimes but that's what makes it fun. #leadupchat
A2: We created a kitchen garden this year w/ an innovation grant from @GOSA_GA. It has evolved and grown into a wonderful learning experience for our Ss. My Ts have taken the ball and ran with it. The future possibilities for this project are endless! #Leadupchat
A2. Students LOVE escape rooms! So I created #QRBreakIN - think old school centers as a team relay race to “break IN” to new unit content. Now student groups compete to solve puzzles asynchronously using tech & traditional tools. #LeadUpChat@VealHeidihttps://t.co/9YB7J1lCpw
Same way we do with the Ss. MODEL. Know the teachers and what their needs are. Tailor a plan designed for them. Give them a voice. Give them power and choice. HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. We ask our teachers to do this, why can’t our leaders lead? #satchat#leadupchat
@mafost Yes. We have to know the value for some is the process of shifting and others it may be the product created from the shift. Having a relationship with colleagues and Ss to recognize what each other needs to shift and what we define as a shift is a game changer.#leadupchat
A2) Writing live in front of students. Sometimes failing, but always having fun and showing them it's okay not to be perfect, that learning is messy sometimes but that's what makes it fun. #leadupchat
A3) digital literacy is huge. With that much information out there, students need to know where to find it, separate good from bad info, and use that info meaningfully to back up their arguments and claims. #leadupchat
A2 Before heading out onto the "playground" Ts, like Ss, need to feel safe-to know that it is OK to take risks & try something new w/ the end game of S learning & growth at the forefront of their work. I think too many teachers don't trust that it's OK to take risks. #leadupchat
A3: Like a great teacher, you need to find varied mediums to share a message...some people respond to
-podcasts
-TED Talks
-Research articles
-Blog posts
-Books
But the most important thing is to walk your talk and share your own learning!
#leadupchat
Q2. I’m not sure what coding is but I was @ the elem. level years ago, I saw the playground as a social skills classroom. Ss working out problems, cooperating, showing leadership, & yes fighting. It was important! It’s a shame some Ss lose recess. #LeadUpChat
YES! I always remember @LisaEickholdt saying.....when we show finished products without the process Ss think we can do something they cannot. When we write with them, we go through the process they go through. #leadupchat
A3 By admitting when I don't know. Teachers must start to let go of the "information purveyor" mindset. We have to teach Ss how to access the info that is accessible to them. They don't need us to just tell them anymore, we have to show them how to get it themselves. #leadupchat
We have to expand our definition of literacy. Reading/writing. Nope. Speaking; language of sound, image, video; online reading skills (way diff than print reading); evaluating sources #leadupchat
A3: To meet the needs of your learners you need to look at data, but most importantly you need student feedback. Want to know what students need...get their feedback and REDPOND with actions to make the class equitable to all. #leadupchat
#leadupchat A3 you hit the nail on the head. Educate your stakeholders on what matters. PD, presentations, student projects...whatever it takes. Let them see how you can reach for excellence!
A2: We created a kitchen garden this year w/ an innovation grant from @GOSA_GA. It has evolved and grown into a wonderful learning experience for our Ss. My Ts have taken the ball and ran with it. The future possibilities for this project are endless! #Leadupchat
A3 As leaders, the need for information translates into the need for knowledge and wisdom (knowledge applied). As we lead our teams, we have a responsibility to continue our own learning, reflect on this new information, & share with others to support their growth #leadupchat
A3: There are so many ways to learn and grow together!
#CoffeeEDU@Katiemc827 does a great job with GHO type conversations
Book Studies (twitter, voxer, face to face)
Chats
Conferences
Workshops
It goes on and on!
#leadupchat
I think the same is true in science. Students needs to see us grapple with questions and problems. And I am definitely real with some of my grappling. productive struggle is such a learnign expereince and so few kids have ever expereinced it #leadupchat
Critical point. Ss know that we cannot compete with the information they have in their pocket. Our value lies elsewhere! The sooner we get that, the more we will engage our Ss in meaningful ways. #leadupchat
A3 By admitting when I don't know. Teachers must start to let go of the "information purveyor" mindset. We have to teach Ss how to access the info that is accessible to them. They don't need us to just tell them anymore, we have to show them how to get it themselves. #leadupchat
A2 coding is totally morphing. Design thinking seems to be the only comonality. Love the non coding coding to design #AR experience in @MetaverseApp always great @ Your library #leadupchat
Our coaching team has been studying the book The Art of Coaching. We're only half way through and already we see the difference in our school. There's a stronger feeling of trust and teamwork. I love it! #leadupchat
A2: I’m no longer in the classroom, BUT I have cohost a podcast where we broadcast various educational topics to hundreds of New Mexico Ts. Topics have included Family Engagement, Ed. Policy, and Equity in Education just to name a few. #LeadUpChat
A3 - The Information Age and technology has altered learning in our world. Some feel scared by this process, but really it’s empowering us to find new innovative ways to teach. Allowing students to find their passion in learning should be embraced, not squelched. #leadupchat
A3: First, and foremost, you need to be meeting the needs of your Ss (that relationships piece again), then look at the data to make sure the Ss are showing growth, which they will be, because we're putting their learning FIRST! #leadupchat
A3 We have had many great conversations at our parent council meetings this year about many of the changes in education. This helps create a picture of how different things are. #leadupchat
A3 my ITS team is constantly looking for ways to recognize innovative teaching along with providing personalized learning opportunities. Badge programs, boot camps, twitter chats, 1:1 support, workshops, online learning, etc. whatever they need we strive to provide #leadupchat
A3 Providing opportunities for Ts to really listen to Ss own stories and experiences is a game changer. Must be accompanied by support, time and collaboration to be able to respond. #leadupchat
This year is the first year I've really tried to think more about my content as a thinking process than information. It was a game-changer in my classroom. This is where engagement lives. #leadupchat
A3 I think we have to keep all stakeholders informed about what we do. Data is not the same as info. Data must be interpreted in order to be useful. Just releasing test scores is not enough. To The uninformed they are just a bunch of numbers. #LeadUpChat
A3. Each week or principal sends out a staff eNewsletter keeping everyone up to date on initiative successes. We include teacher “Shout Outs” celebrating specific examples of work. For #TeacherAppreciation week, we even shared student feedback! https://t.co/tKFz4dhn22#LeadUpChat
Oh this is so true. If we get out of the way, they will take off under our guidance rather than thinking we need to front load everything to them. #leadupchat
A2: I’m no longer in the classroom, BUT I cohost a podcast where we broadcast various educational topics to hundreds of New Mexico Ts. Topics have included Family Engagement, Ed. Policy, and Equity in Education just to name a few. Once a teacher, always a teacher! #LeadUpChat
A3: Ensuring our teachers have the tools they need, continuing to learn along side them... bringing a genuine desire for student and teacher growth. Teachers need to be able take risks in a safe environment just like our students! #leadlearner#leadupchat
A3 Building a sense of "curiosity" w/ Ts around all things: S behavior, S performance, etc. We don't have to blame/have an answer-we need to work together to learn more and support them. Trying to build a district PLC through book studies & sharing on Twitter. #leadupchat
A1: We have to be willing to take risks, accept failure but then reflect and move on, maintain a growth mindset and accept a journey (possibly without a map). #LeadUpChat
A3: Model the way. Be a lead learner who is always seeking new information by reading books, listening to podcasts, and most importantly connecting with others through twitter, Voxer, edcamps, etc. Model what you seek. #Leadupchat
A3: Redifine the reality by understanding the perception others have and plan to fulfill the perception you want them to have. Write and publish uour own narrative. #LeadUpChat
Q4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” #LeadUpChat
Q4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." #LeadUpChat
A3: There is no longer an excuse to NOT be connected or get information! YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Blogs, Vlogs, etc. The possibilities are endless! #leadupchat
Absolutely. It's more about teaching Ss how to access the information, ask questions, problem solve, collaborate, design their own projects, etc. It's actually really exciting! #leadupchat
Hope all is well! Nice to see you!
A3b - It is important to address the entire population of students. I’ve witnessed the incredible work that high achieving students have done. But, we must also stress the importance of opportunities for those who might not have been successful before. #leadupchat
Oh this is so true. If we get out of the way, they will take off under our guidance rather than thinking we need to front load everything to them. #leadupchat
A4 I've found that as I give up control & hand the reigns over to my Ts, they in turn are able to give up control in their classroom & allow Ss to drive the learning. As always: model what we want to see #leadupchat
A4: Love Dr. Seuss. Being a Leader in Me and Lighthouse School has really helped shape our culture of being student driven. IB-MYP also complements this shift in thinking as well. #leadupchat
Q4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” #LeadUpChat
A4 It seems to really be about convincing Ts to make small changes to give Ss more ownership. Teaching is so much EASIER when kids are engaged and interested, and handing over the reins is step one to creating that atmosphere. #leadupchat
A4 I can't believe the ways my teaching load has changed since I have started to let go and create a more student-led environment. I have a long way to go, but simple changes have allowed me to put much more of the "work" of learning on my students where it should be. #leadupchat
Q4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." #LeadUpChat
A4: Helping our colleagues understand how to share their expertise in new ways. "Student-driven" does not mean a classroom free-for-all. Often our expertise will be used in guiding, helping set goals, time management, etc. #LeadUpChat
Q4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." #LeadUpChat
A2: This year, our ITS shared coding with every GL and the Ss loved it! Our GRT @khoggardGRT created @breakoutEDU games for content & helped Ts work through PBL with their Ss. I’ve supported Ts with reflecting on LA instruction, taking more risks & feeling safe. #LeadUpChat
@mafost "meaningful" depends on where you start (relationships) and where each of our finish lines maybe. Thanks for the paraphrase..........#leadupchat
A4: Ts encourage s-driven learning by allowing Ss to share in decisions, believing in their capacity to lead, and remembering how it feels to learn. Leaders must model this approach and ensure the necessary supports are in place to execute this model effectively. #LeadUpChat
A4: A great way to increase student voice is to get them involved in telling the story of your school. @KidsDeserveIt had the idea of social media interns...it is enlightening for staff to see what our students value and appreciate.
#leadupchat
Q4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." #LeadUpChat
A4 - There must be a clear vision of what “student centered/driven” looks like. It’s not just about empowering students. The teacher and leader plays a key role in establishing what this looks like. #LeadUpchat
A4)
Truly we must demand a process that engages our students on the fringes.
Cultivatetheir brilliance.
I work with dropouts and these Ss are highly capable.
But until now they were taught to their deficits and not their strengths!
#LeadUpChat
It is amazing the difference it makes. Ss stop feeling like their time is being wasted, engagement skyrockets, and class time just FLIES by! #leadupchat
RTQ4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." #LeadUpChat
CHOICE! Choice for Ss in how they demo their learning. Choice for teachers with PD. We all learn in different ways, and we need to respect that dynamic more in our schools. When Ts experience the power of choice in what/how they learn, they will duplicate that. #LeadUpChat
Q4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." #LeadUpChat
A4: Especially with my little people, much of the time I follow their lead and their questions. You have to be okay with veering off the lesson plan when Ss want to know MORE! It's going to be okay if you're doing what's best for Ss. I promise!! #leadupchat
A4: be very very clear about what you want. Model extensively to the point that staff and students can't get it wrong without trying to. Tell them the "why" behind what you are doing. Follow up, and don't lower expectations. #leadupchat
#leadupchat A4 It’s all about the finesse! Spotlight and model student-led learning as much as possible. Encourage and participate in new ideas with staff that are student led. Don’t force compliance, recognize and celebrate innovation!
A4: We can break down barriers by moving past the phrases student-driven, data-driven, anything-driven.
And rethink the whole enchilada as being human-centered.
#leadupchat#FuturEd
Q4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." #LeadUpChat
A4 Just had our first "Solo Day" in our classroom. Students worked independently all day with us just keeping an eye from afar. #soproud#leadupchathttps://t.co/epkLukjyUR
We too tore down our computer lab, in January our school went 1:1 with technology, and over the summer our library media center is being remodeled into a learning commons! We’ve also embraced coding, @breakoutEDU, & @Makerspaces_com#LeadUpChat
In reply to

A4 When consider S driven learning we must be purposeful with providing our Ss the capacity to make intentional decisions about how they learn. This requires an investment in shifting Ss learning goals & guiding them on how to make these decisions in our classrooms #leadupchat
A4: I'm preaching to the choir with #LeadUpChat crew, but unfortunately it's not the norm everywhere: WE MUST BE THE CHANGE WE SEEK. If we want Ts to be student-driven, then leaders must be teacher-driven. We must model what we want to see. Every stinkin' day. #Path2Serendipity
A4 Getting educators together to really examine student work through moderation networks like #ocdsbPAN has made Ts feel supported and Ss benefit from improved practice. https://t.co/Qd3WsJMZF0#ohassta#leadupchat
Right, as a coach, as a guide. I guess that is hard for some Ts to accept, and it does create a certain amount of fear. But the more I trust my Ss the more they prove themselves worthy of that trust. I guess it's just convincing Ts to give it a shot. #leadupchat
A4 oh the places, we can go. Begin with the why. And let students help define "the how" with their ideas, questions, the possibilities are endless. We have to use programs and texts as resource, NOT the drivers of the learning #leadupchat
Q4: Dr. Seuss is onto something, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." #LeadUpChat
A4: be very very clear about what you want. Model extensively to the point that staff and students can't get it wrong without trying to. Tell them the "why" behind what you are doing. Follow up, and don't lower expectations. #leadupchat
So glad I was able to stop by. LOVE the questions this morning @heffrey@VealHeidi ! Really made me think! Have a wonderful weekend everyone! #leadupchat
A4) As educational leaders it is time to stop thinking about teaching and learning as something I deliver and want kids to know. Kids come curious...this is why passion projects are powerful for kids self discovery. #LeadUpChat
Like the note on clarity here, George. Students' learning targets should not be a mystery - they should be clear, precise, and supported by all class learning experiences #leadupchat
A4. It boils down to the basic question of what kind citizens we want to produce. Do we want to create robots, followers, passive ppl, or leaders who will contribute to society? The survival of society depends on what we do. #LeadUpChat
A4. PLNs, #ObserveMe, and Instructional Rounds can radically change the fundamental nature of the discourse in a building. Showing high level work products or examples of what COULD be, with plenty of time to dialogue about how it CAN work. https://t.co/evRhdLPb1U#LeadUpChat

A4 again leadership must model. Are we asking the right questions and encouraging Ts to look at student growth instead of solely looking at student data. Success has many faces. #’s don’t tell the whole story #leadupchat
A4: Validate staff and students! Post their efforts through social media! ... promote taking risks then share the successes. This year we focused on “Legacy Matters” to help Ss uncover their critical roles at Kokomo High School. #leadupchat
A4: Learning starts w/ us. If we model owning our own learning, our Ts will as well. Their mindset about learning will begin to change & you’ll see it in the classroom. It’s a journey & won’t happen overnight but with intentional support, you can change the culture. #Leadupchat
A3: This year has been transformational for me as an educator & I’ve been fortunate to have my work BFF @khoggardGRT along for the ride. We know how important relationships are & encouraging Ss voice & choice, innovation & grit. We’ve learned more & grown together. #LeadUpChat
And if schools were student-driven, would the current schedules kids face exist? 47 min class, 5 min, 47 min class, 5 min, 47 min class, 20 minutes to eat, 20 minutes to play, 47 min class... #leadupchat
A4. It boils down to the basic question of what kind citizens we want to produce. Do we want to create robots, followers, passive ppl, or leaders who will contribute to society? The survival of society depends on what we do. #LeadUpChat
A4: Especially with my little people, much of the time I follow their lead and their questions. You have to be okay with veering off the lesson plan when Ss want to know MORE! It's going to be okay if you're doing what's best for Ss. I promise!! #leadupchat
Q5: Educational leader, Michael Fullan, boldly declares, “Traditional schooling is increasingly boring for students and for teachers, yet the solution of buying technology has failed to have significant impact.” #LeadUpChat

A4: each of us has a different appetite for relinquishing control. If we ask each person to do what they can and we coach them, we will see a culture shift that we seek! #leadupchat
We need to break free of the paradigm of Ts being “google” and passing knowledge to Ss. We need to take a “milling” mindset of grounding knowledge into wisdom, which is something you can’t get from google. #leadupchat
Agree, Vic. We have to place this a the forefront of what we do. The sense of urgency to grow our students, increase their decision-making capacity, and broaden their positive leadership skills, so they will make substantive contributions is key #leadupchat
A4 Just had our first "Solo Day" in our classroom. Students worked independently all day with us just keeping an eye from afar. #soproud#leadupchathttps://t.co/epkLukjyUR

A5 Simply tacking tech onto our teaching doesn't make it exciting. We can move away from traditional teaching with or without tech, but it's up to us to make the changes that will make our classes meangingful and engaging #leadupchat
A4: SUPPORT- SUPPORT- SUPPORT! We’re in this together and the students in our buildings are ALL of our students. We should encourage one another, collaborate rather than compete, and aim to be the best FOR the team rather than ON the team. #LeadUpChat
Q5: Educational leader, Michael Fullan, boldly declares, “Traditional schooling is increasingly boring for students and for teachers, yet the solution of buying technology has failed to have significant impact.” #LeadUpChat
A5 Oh man, this amazing article from @ncte answers this question so beautifully. It's about how the language arts, when driven by student engagement around real interest, seamlessly creates an integrated, standards-based learning EXPERIENCE. Not an assignment. #leadupchat
When we moved from inkwells to ball point pens, were there discussions about how to use the new technology? No, just let folks use the tools available. It isn't a curriculum, it's the way business is done. #leadupchat
One way we can work to improve our schools is by integrating the kinds of tech students use at home into our school environments. There is still way to much distance between tech-at-home and tech-at-school. This would be one positive step.
A5: Some school districts went 1:1 because they wanted to be first. School leaders need a purpose and goals, not a gold medal for being first. #purpose#leadupchat
RTQ5: Educational leader, Michael Fullan, boldly declares, “Traditional schooling is increasingly boring for students and for teachers, yet the solution of buying technology has failed to have significant impact.” #LeadUpChat
A5: first we need to make sure that we are designing good lessons. Is there a clear learning objective? Have we taught relevant vocabulary? Are we small chunking each piece of learning followed by teacher modelling and practice? We need to work on these first! #Leadupchat
And time to visit the classrooms where blended learning is being successfully used and making an impact on student learning. Many teachers need to SEE something first before they'll try it. #LeadUpChat
A5 Technology is not a separate entity that we try to fit in. It needs to be an integrated part of what we do when it makes sense. It requires reflection about our teaching strategies and what we can take and make even better. #leadupchat
Q5: Educational leader, Michael Fullan, boldly declares, “Traditional schooling is increasingly boring for students and for teachers, yet the solution of buying technology has failed to have significant impact.” #LeadUpChat
Except; when we moved inkwells to ballpoints, it added access to writing beyond the rich. Maybe we SHOULD have had conversations but didn’t? #LeadUpChat
Yes! And not social media created for "education." Let Ss harness the power of Twitter, of Snapchat, of Insta! They are already using it, why can't we teach them how it can be positive for growth? #leadupchat
A5. We need to stop buying STUFF & start buying IN. To relationships. To our students. To one another. Tech isn’t the enemy: the loss of meaningful connections between individuals is. We need to make genuine efforts to understand the students we serve. Not judgment. #LeadUpChat
Q5: Educational leader, Michael Fullan, boldly declares, “Traditional schooling is increasingly boring for students and for teachers, yet the solution of buying technology has failed to have significant impact.” #LeadUpChat
A5: Cannot ignore changing world around us & keep classrooms looking the same. Classrooms need to be need-satisfying environments designed to help Ss transform their thinking, using best tools available. We have to let technology in, but w/ purpose. #LeadUpChat#Path2Serendipity
A5 Technology continuously changes just like information. We must cultivate and have purpose for learning and utilize technology with our purpose. #LeadUpchat
A4: Students need to become part of professional development. If they participate with us then "student driven" classrooms would be perfectly natural.#LeadUpChat#aieconf
A5 educating Ts and Ss on student centered tech use using the #SAMR model and #pdbadges We celebrate innovative teaching and learning along the way and create a supportive atmosphere https://t.co/rhWyVxvRAl#leadupchat
A5 Integrating tech into our classrooms in an authentic way becomes easier if we realize we do not have to be the experts. Even our youngest children can lead the way and figure things our together. #leadupchat
A5: It’s about the learning not the device. We must make sure we‘re not using devices for busy work or just because it looks cool. What are you wanting Ss to learn & how can we enable them to reach higher levels of learning which are now possible by using these tools? #Leadupchat
A5 Providing doesn't make teachers or students experts. We teach kids how to read textbooks; we need to teach how to read platforms. Everyone deserves meaningful projects even with tech integration. #leadupchat
A5. Technology needs to be experienced to expand the classroom- not just to complete a computer program. We want to give students the world! #leadupchat
A1: We must leverage and harness the leadership and talents that exist within our team. Creativity and innovation are muscles that require proactive coaching to be cultivated and developed. Create a culture centered around Ss, not compliance. #LeadUpChat
A5 This may require a re-learning of sorts. We must help our Ts & Ss incorporate technology into learning with purpose, intention, & goal-driven targets. Using tech without clearly established reasons has no value #leadupchat
Q5: Educational leader, Michael Fullan, boldly declares, “Traditional schooling is increasingly boring for students and for teachers, yet the solution of buying technology has failed to have significant impact.” #LeadUpChat
Oh yes, we starting talking about this at the beginning of the year and working towards habits and classroom routines that would support this. #leadupchat
A5: Fullan is correct on points A and B.
While B was/is a needed action step, it goes to show that {{{action steps}}} do. not. create. impact.
People do.
Cultures created by people do.
Impact.

A5: Challenges will vary from T to T based on experience, level of comfort, & support received from colleagues & administration. You have to keep in mind to take things slow (you don’t have to do everything all at once) Do what you can & when you can’t- seek help! #LeadUpChat
I feel like (and could be very wrong here) the limit is connected to the comfort of Ts and tech. We stick to the device because that’s as far as Ts have been trained. #LeadUpChat
A5: Currently muddling through this... our great teachers get it... others are wrestling with technology which they see as frustrating, not as a a tool! Open to ANY suggestions to equip myself as a lead learner this summer... looking forward to new challenges! #leadupchat
A5: Let's also push back on the boring label. invite students each week to be part of the ongoing grand conversations of humankind. When we read, write, and argue we are contributing to something greater than ourselves. Framed this way + personal passion = engagement #leadupchat

A: First step has to be think about how the tech is going to deepen the learning, enhance the creativity/collaboration. Tech does not equal innovation on its own. Integration needs to be purposeful #LeadUpChat
A5. We can’t be afraid to try new strategies with our students! Learning & growing together will build a safe risk/fail culture in your classroom & school! We have to be ready to JUMP first! Here’s a blog post I wrote about it...
A4&5: As we move towards CBE/competency based learning, where Ss know exactly where they need to go, Ts are the coaches-helping Ss set goals, give feedback, & choose the tools, which may or may not include tech, that work best for them for that particular work. #leadupchat

Love this reflection, Kelly. May help to collaborate with the team to establish clear goals for how Ss should use tech in all classes - What should they be doing? How should tech support S collaboration? - are some guiding questions that can be helpful #leadupchat
One of the things we tried was asking each teacher to create one goal where they would be using tech in the classroom to either collaborate or create and share. We had staff meeting check ins. We had quite a bit success, but some didn't make much progress. #leadupchat
A6: Meaningful Work.
I hate to regurgitate the same two words from previous answer, but
Meaningful Work meets our human needs,
creates play,
flow, and
happiness like only two other things: food and safety.

A6 If we want collaborative teams we have to give them the gift of time. At our school Ss go home at 12:00 on Fridays so that Ts have 2 hours to meet for individualized PD and collaboration. Giving them time has made all the difference. #leadupchat
A6 Ts need to have some say in how their teams are organized. You can't create like-mindedness by treating Ts as movable pieces on a game board. Shared vision is important, schoolwide and on teams. #leadupchat
A6: By not dictating the groups or the exact focus of the groups. Allow Ts to form collaborative partnerships, choosing an area in which they want to grow, and then provide the time and resources for them to run with it #LeadUpChat
A6: we need to promote the Ts that contribute positively to the overall culture. We had Ts nominate and then present awards at our Teacher’s Day luncheon last month. #leadupchat
A6) Moving teams means having a shared vision and that outcomes is important. In the absence of a vision and strategy people will feel like things are happening "to them" rather "with them." The collective ownership piece means everyone is invested. #LeadUpChat

2. Measure Progress
3. Multiply Leaders

6. Be Willing To Make Mistakes
7. Learn By Doing

A6: By giving students interesting questions that are complex and relevant to their lives. Showing students how to effectively test out their thoughts, verbally and in writing in the marketplace of ideas. Creating an environment that fosters this. #Leadupchat

A6: #LeadUpChat Ts must provide Ss with opportunities to collaborate through classbuilding & team building. They need practice. As a T you must surround yourself with Ts that will make you reflect & become a better educator. I wrote about this in my blog https://t.co/QGZu4FSZha
A6 I am trying to step back and allow some teacher leaders to lead our voyage into digital portfolios for all. It is difficult for me, but they are so good at what they do and more reluctant teachers might be more receptive to them. #leadupchat

A6 Sharing a vision; cultivating discussion and providing time to collaborate with one another and other groups to deepen understanding and move forward. #LeadUpchat
A6: Remind Ts of their “why” & if we truly want ALL kids to learn we cannot do it alone. We must work together and be open to trying new things. When we are united in our purpose, a collaborative culture will emerge. At @PESDragons we say we are truly better together! #Leadupchat
A6 As we make this shift it's important that our team establish collaborative goals and share the work as we move toward our vision. As leaders, we have to establish protected time where our team engages in collegial efforts to reflect, support, & establish next steps #leadupchat

Thanks to everyone who joined in today for #LeadUpChat. A special thank you to @vealheidi for being my co-host! Honored to do life with you. Be on the look out this week as we announce our Summer Series line up. LeadUp...LeadOn! Join the convo again next Saturday.
Definitely. Our Ts teach 12 classes (of 70 minutes) and have 11 periods free which allows them time to observe each other. We also offer to sub for Ts so that they can observe each other if their schedules don't work #leadupchat
A6 An example of this is structured Instructional Rounds. I facilitated several of these this year and it was an incredibly impactful time of professional learning for all who participated. #leadupchat
