A1: Fundamentals are imperative. There will be no use for game planning if our technique is subpar. With that said, about 70/30 (technique) in predistrict, 60/40 (technique) during district and 50/50 in playoffs. Just estimates!#TXHSFBCHAT

HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q1: How much time do you practice solely focused on position technique compared to playbook install? #TXHSFBCHAT
  • MyGAOnline Jul 11 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1: Spend about 25-40% on positions specific technique but then most of the other parts of practice incorporate all those techniques. Another 25-40% on group or hook up drills. Each time we are working on playbook we are working towards those small techniques items. #txhsfbchat
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Jul 11 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1: Each practice, we may get 10-15 minutes early on strictly for skills, as the season goes, we have to incorporate it more into play specific use #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CAM387 Jul 11 @ 9:14 PM EDT
Q1 A1, @txhsfbchat #TXHSFBCHAT during 2 a days we try to get in as much individual as possible knowing when school starts that will be scaled back. Once in season we have at least 20-30 min of individual each day. It is straight fundamentals.
  • CoachJezek Jul 11 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A1:At least 1/2 of practice is concentrated on indy work w/pos. technique focus. Practice format allows us to move from individual drills into group into team scheme by doing game situation work in the middle (perimeter/inside drill) where we may get scheme w/scout #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Jul 11 @ 9:18 PM EDT

A1: Individual periods broken down as EDD and Schematic. 80/20 EDD fall camp, 60/40 season, 50/50 post season. QB/RB mesh, WR getoffs, CB Jam tech examples of EDD, example of something e do every single day #TXHSFBCHAT
  • MyGAOnline Jul 11 @ 9:19 PM EDT
I don't want to ruin everything but is there a question about how much your playbook influences what you work on during individual time or does it go the other way around? What influences what? #TXHSFBCHAT

A1) EDD's or everyday drills should be performed for about 40% to 50% of your practice at the beginning of the season. Athletes need to be able to perform the fundamental footwork, actions, and techniques before implementing the playbook. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Jul 11 @ 9:21 PM EDT

A2: I really want both/and when learning. How can I take the technique and implement it into a tactic or scheme? In turn, it would help the players with the “Why” of the drill. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • MyGAOnline Jul 11 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A2: Technique will always overrule the tactical part because if your technique at any position isn't second nature than your kids are worried about doing their technique correctly rather than what they need to do on a play #TXHSFBCHAT
  • elbigfred Jul 11 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A1) 2 As the season progresses the EDD's should be done faster and more playbook and game specific drills should be completed. #TXHSFBCHAT

  • CAM387 Jul 11 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Q2 A2 @txhsfbchat #TXHSFBCHAT I'm 50/50. Big on fundamentals, like to keep it simple. Sometimes we get caught up in the tactical part of the game and forget technique. I'm always open to learning new things. What I love about this job is our differences in coaching styles

A2) You should have a technique for every tactic. Game specific tactic or scheme needs to be addressed during individual, then applied during group, then executed during team. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Jul 11 @ 9:29 PM EDT

  • MyGAOnline Jul 11 @ 9:33 PM EDT
#TXHSFBCHAT I coach QBs so most of our EDDs come during our warm up due with throwing techinuqe and footwork. We start with the release and build the throw down to the drop and feet.
  • 425DC1 Jul 11 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A1) early season we are working fundamental skills in Indy about 80% of the time. We will go over play specific stuff like steps, reads, etc the other 20. By end of season it’s probably closer to 50/50 split #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • coach_harvey18 Jul 11 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A3: If I had to rank em at DB position, they’d go as follows: 1) Tackling - I tackle and coach up any discrepancies. 2) Footwork - EDDs with pedaling, opening, stick foot, etc. Implement the ball as much as possible. 3) Reads - Both ball read & route read drills #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CoachJezek Jul 11 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3) For LBs it is always eye/read progression and balanced movement. Drill it with scouts giving o-line looks for zone, down, pass and pull blocks while having backers "read-step" in reaction to the looks in-balance and in-control. #TXHSFBCHAT
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Jul 11 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3: The core techniques we work are steps and hand position. We drill them everyday whether I have 30 minutes or 5 minutes. We use fit and finish to work step and hand placement. Pass pro circuit to work step and punch. Sleds as well for step and hand fit #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CAM387 Jul 11 @ 9:37 PM EDT
Q3 A3 @txhsfbchat #TXHSFBCHAT Stance,Foot placement, Hand Placement, break it down into 3 different drills with constant repetition. I always try to come up with funny pneumatic device to get the kids to remember where hands and feet need to be.
  • elbigfred Jul 11 @ 9:39 PM EDT
A3) LB's should be built from the ground up. Footwork is essential. Agility drills over bags, Read-Reaction drills, etc. LB's can't tackle anybody if they can't get there. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Jul 11 @ 9:40 PM EDT
Q4: During play practice, when and how do you coach kids on the technique they use for each play? #TXHSFBCHAT
  • MyGAOnline Jul 11 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A4 Let the little things go a fix it on film in meetings or share the notes. Fix the big overwhelming things that greatly affect what they are doing. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • coach_harvey18 Jul 11 @ 9:42 PM EDT
A4: I go with @CoachJezek on this one. Teach much more in film than on the field. However, I will always try to give feedback (one the fly) every play. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Jul 11 @ 9:45 PM EDT
A4: During team and inside run, I spot the ball as we move down the field so I can coach my guys up quickly between plays. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • 425DC1 Jul 11 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A3) For DL 1) stance and get offs 2) block destruction 3) block recognition/keys 4) pass rush 5) tackling #TXHSFBCHAT
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • elbigfred Jul 11 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A4) Coach on the run! Quick correction so as not to interrupt the flow of practice. Each position coach should be watching his position and correct the athletes after each play. #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CoachJezek Jul 11 @ 9:46 PM EDT
Concisely and for as long as the opposing quarterback allows. No time for complement sandwiches @Fertitta_Gabe #TXHSFBCHAT

  • mloucks27 Jul 11 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A1: 1) 20-30 minutes usually. Preseason: most drills I work are directly related to our install for that day. Easy to explain the WHAT, HOW, AND WHY. Midseason: mostly individual technique. Constantly working w/each safety to find what works for them. #TXHSFBCHAT.

  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Jul 11 @ 9:48 PM EDT
In this age of quantity reps, its very important to be clear and concise to talk to your kids between plays #TXHSFBCHAT
  • mloucks27 Jul 11 @ 9:48 PM EDT
    2) I'm blessed w/high IQ Safeties so we go over game plan adjusts on the fly. Late/Postseason: Game plan specific. Technique should take care of itself by now. Will do some fundamental work to clean up anything that needs it. #TXHSFBCHAT

  • CAM387 Jul 11 @ 9:50 PM EDT
Q4 A4 @txhsfbchat #TXHSFBCHAT during play you have to coach on the run. I'm big on using different technique from week to week showing the kids how it correlates to our opponent. During film I ask for player input & try to put that in our weekly plan if I feel it is beneficial
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Jul 11 @ 9:50 PM EDT
Right! You have to have your buzzwords! There's no time to get upset and have a fit. You have to be able to provide quick verbal cues that stick with the kids #TXHSFBCHAT

A5: I always talk to the kid about what does that coach say that I don't. When they go to camps or trainers because I don't want to hear coach talk. I want to hear what the kid hears. Don't matter what you say, only thing that matters is what they understand #TXHSFBCHAT
