I'm Janet Avery, Curriculum Director in Jerome, and your moderator this evening! Please take a moment to introduce yourself - even if you are just lurking. :-) #IDedchat
R1: collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. All skills that students need to be effective with learning and skills they will need in the future. #IDedchat
A2: There are opportunities for them to work independently, and partially together, but things get really great when they ALL intertwine and work as one. #idedchat
#IDEdchat. I guess I have never considered the role collaboration plays in creativity. I was surprised to see it (creativity) as the intersection of the others.
Q3: C#1-Communication. @froehlichm gave these descriptors - what stands out; what might you add; why is this important for our colleagues and students? #IDedchat
R2: when you have the Venn going, it makes me think that the one in the middle is special. I don’t see one being more special/important than another. That’s why I see them as symbiotic. #IDedchat
I'm the most creative when I am collaborating with others. Have you ever read Launch by @ajjuliani@spencerideas ? Their categories of different types of creatives is awesome. I'm not great at original ideas, but I'm better at building off another's & making it better. #idedchat

R3: I think we need to really look at how we communicate face to face. I also see this as an opportunity for digital citizenship to be met. How are we being good citizens and being nice to one another. #IDedchat
A3: Communication in person...and finding ways to effectively communicate with those you don't see face to face. That is where multi media tools come in to play. #IDedchat
I am not saying I disagree...just never thought about the relationship in this way. I too am inspired when I collaborate with others. It is a wonderful visual. #IDEdchat

A4: Teaching communication takes time and practice. Listen with your eyes! Do we take time to teach these skills in our classes? My experiences say NOT ENOUGH! #IDedchat
Q5: What are your favorite ways to communicate with students, colleagues, parents, other? What tools do you use? Why? What do you wish others would use? #IDedchat
R4: we must teach that communication isn’t just speaking. It’s body language, listening, taking time to reflect, then offering input. It’s a process. #IDedchat

#IDedchat Looking at your speaker helps to eliminate distraction. No cell phone. No pencils. No paper. Just you looking at who you are listening to. That shows attention and respect.
We have started using @SmorePages to communicate with staff and parents. They haven't necessarily "replaced" paper newsletter - but we can share them much easier. #IDedchat
A5: Love face to face. Email and remind are not bad either. Throw in a Smore newsletter, a website and a video now and again too! #IDedchat
No wrong way. Communicate with the tool that meets the listener's needs.
A6: I love the "Flexibility" trait needed with collaboration. I also appreciate the "responsibility and support." Moves "collaborative" projects away from just "group work." #IDedchat
YES - I think this is even more critical in the "climate" we seem to be in. It is important to learn to collaborate with people who have different backgrounds and viewpoints than ourselves. #IDedchat
A6: #IDedchat Ability to work with others. Not a ton of jobs where one can work alone. Super important skill! The give and take, the negotiating and the ability to give up something to get something. Life skills! #important
It helps build our #BackgroundKnowledge that so many of us lack. We all have grown up differently in our little silos. Time to break down walls. #IDedchat
#IDEdchat A6....what I notice is that no where does it exclude working independently for a portion of the time. As one who needs alone time to reflect and process, I appreciate that collaboration can (must) still allow for this.
A7: Communication "strategies" are key for effective collaboration.
I think it is also important for the collaborative group to understand the strengths of individuals - build on those strengths. #IDedchat
R7: establish end goals before any project starts. Might want to set up tasks for everyone. Maybe a written response to the collaboration tasks by all. #IDedchat
A7: At times I let them pick their groups. I encourage them to see other peers to work with to see what information/knowledge they can gain from one another. #idedchat
A7: #IDedchat Starts on Day 1. Strategic partnering with shareouts. "My partner & I discussed that ..." "My partner disagreed that..." Work of Anita Archer & Kevin Feldman is awesome here in strategic collaboration & in raising rigor in the classroom via quality teaching skills.
And nothing says you can’t switch who you collaborate with throughout. I would say this is what leads to real innovation. A blending of ideas that arose from communication on a collaborative task. #IDedchat
A7: in math class I look for students who sole a problem differently and have them work together to find connections between their methods. Or to solve another problem together.
A8: I love the last point - viewing failure as an opportunity to learn. It is also important that students/colleagues understand that no one is "born" with creativity. #IDedchat
A8: #IDedchat Reflection rolls with Dr. Deming and Plan, Do, Study, Act. Did it work? Why? Why not? Can it be better? Ties in nice with asking the right questions and yet again ...listening! #studentvoice#teachervoice

R9: I think one skill that we don’t do well with is allowing Ss to be creative in their thinking. They want to get a quick idea and be finished. Provide opportunity to work with a plethora of items to construct with. #makerspace ideas. Use huge area for working. #IDedchat
A9: #IDedchat Again, Day 1! Classroom must be a safe place to fail. I say, "I can't change my oil. You might be able to." We all have strengths and weaknesses. We are all here trying to get better! Today is about being better than yesterday! Fail forward!!!
A9: When giving students opportunities to showcase what they have learned - be sure you aren't expecting only one "right" way to complete that assignment. #IDedchat
A10: I really appreciate the phrase "evaluate competing claims." This is so important when "wading" through all the information that is at their fingertips - what is accurate? #IDedchat
A10: I think of one's mindset. We are more likely to think critically when we know doing so will move us forward and lead to learning and understanding. #IDEdchat
A10: I also found the phrase "higher level of concentration" interesting. I don't think that Ts always associate students really concentrating as part of critical thinking - sometimes they don't give students processing time. #IDedchat
I agree with @averyteach with evaluation. You must look at results from the activity and see how our results came to fruition and then come up with ways that we can improve. Be your worst critic. #IDedchat
A10 #IDedchat Higher level and deep thinking. We need to work on this as a profession. Most of us (me too) live in DOK 1&2 land the majority of the time. We need to thoughtfully plan to move a portion of our work, questioning, etc to DOK 3/4.
I guess I hadn't thought about them being connected before... makes sense! Creativity is at the center-for a student to be creative, critical thinking about the topic must take place, and commun. & collab. should occur even if just with the teacher. #IDedchat
Absolutely - many times this is due to our distracted living. We feel rushed to "get through" content - so we don't stop to take the time for the processing needed to think critically. #IDedchat
