The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
Guided Inquiry. Heulwen in #Melbourne and I'm sure there are more experienced tweeps but we are all blessed with limitless curiousity. Let's see where the journey takes us.

A1:
Effective teaching means you empower students with skills to learn for life. ๐
You create a culture that fosters a growth mindset with many opportunities for students to exercise these skillsโand their own agency, too.
#edchatPH
yes! my sentiments too? i like the way IB school gives grades, its narrative and students really work on to achieve the indicators and not just giving out numbers form assessments taken #edchatPH
Hi, Manuel from Germany ๐ฉ๐ช is calling. I love collaborating over borders and Iโm excited to read about your content. What a great community. #edchatph
#edchatPH q1 a1 This is a doozy of a question. I know with signers 6 is my limit because I need eye contact. With a mixed co teaching class 22 is my limit. After that I can feel students are getting less guidance, less interaction.
Thx @gohgaikjune
Singapore is removing exams for certain Grades (Grade 1, 2 and secondary 1 levels). Understandably, parents like me got nervous and excited at the same time #edchatPH
#edchatPH Heulwen in Deafed and #TESOL in #Melbourne Gotta good kickstart today, thank my #coffee but thank my golden tumeric latte for better health. So goody good
A1 cont
Inquiry to allow your students to explore on their own, to question their knowledge that leads them to action. Action that is sustainable and practical.
Reflection that ensures students and teachers to look back. #edchatPH
Agreed there. In world language instruction, at least, a student can very easily get good grades and be perfectly incapable of communicating in or understanding the new language.
#edchatph
A1:
One practical indicator of effective teaching is students' abilities to apply knowledge, concepts, and skills in new investigations and situations.

Looking back at Q1 I recall why I didnโt want to apply to traditional schools anymore.
I cannot stand standing inside a classroom of 40 students, not being able to cater to each one of them. Having to rely on a PowerPoint or a teacher prepared presentation #edchatPH

q1 a1 @ManishaMonga1 asked what is effective teaching but what I'm really hearing and seeing is what values do we need to frame and bring forth to really allow our students to learn
to their best capacity. Quality discussion #edchatPH
We have to witness the spectrum of what students are capable of. We use I Can statements in language classes to give students goals or help them set their own. The same could be used in any other subject. Ss can potentially choose the way they prove their knowledge
#edchatPH
#edchatPH A1. Effective teaching , to me is engaged learner and teacher. When there is a connection between the two and both are receivers and senders in their communication cycle
PH schools need to rethink the current model weโre using. Our directress summed it perfectly:
Why are we teaching students of the 21st century using models and modes of teaching from the 19th century. #edchatPH
#edchatPH A2. The question I'd like to ask is " why are awards and rewards necessary..don't they always go to the already recognized..how many times do we put in effort to acknowledge the "unspoken ,hidden, " voice?
Yep Gino 22. For every student after that there is a 10% drop in 1:1 interaction because feedback needs those 2 minute catch ups
#TESOL classes are much smaller at 16. #edchatPH
Thanks! I love that when they have clarifications, they can email me and I could respond to them individually, I like personalised learning, I get to have that connection with my Ss #edchatPH

Yes, I also try to do the same using our LMS. It should never ve acceptable to just put a number in an essay then leave your student hanging as to what that number means. #edchatPH

When @ginoloko asks you to post a Q about relationships, you do it! ๐ Plus, I'm all about relationships!
Let's help each other grow: what are things you do each day to build relationships with your students & colleagues? What is the impact?

Doesnt help when the teachers themselves have difficulty to change their mode of delivery to adapt to the new world . To be fair, not only teachers are facing the seismic change in technology #edchatPH
I believe when a teacher strives to bring best out of students by applying various strategies according to Ss need, effective teaching happens in her class. #edchatPH
yes, but there has to be some kind of change, it cannot be that education 30years ago will be still applied, we can change but hopefully only for the better #edchatPH
You bring up an important question! Not everyone is an introvertโand that's a good thing! We need to value the diversity in our students. One way is to ensure that we provide diversity in our inquiries and how students can respond. #edchatPH
True. The "some" apparently rely on traditional because it is what the majority of the clients believe how education works in the Phils. Private schools need high number or else the funds will be scarce to sustain and maintain the school's operation. Sad story...#edchatPH
Sad when we witness this. Though in fairness to the Ts, I'm sure the commitment and compassion are there but maybe time is not on their side. #edchatph

A2: I greet my students when they enter in my class and a smile with faith in their capabilities when they progress a little, is sufficient in many cases. In one hour class, a teacher can touch many lives! I love teaching.. #edchatPH

#edchatph A3. Not everyone is doing well...inspire of the self driven approach. there is ample voice and Choice given...we are an MYP school so we run the inquiry as per requirement...but some students need to be goaded all the time, as a teacher what can one do?
Yep Gino 22. For every student after that there is a 10% drop in 1:1 interaction because feedback needs those 2 minute catch ups

I never get tired in making my Ss realize that my classroom is a venue for making mistakes and learning from them, together. No one has a monopoly of knowledge so I don't want them to just stare ate me the whole time with jaws hanging . #edchatPH
In the public schools, the average is 60. In the private schools, we hope for an average of 40. Number speaks in the private sector. Low number means low funding because we aren't subsidised by the govt. Sad story this is .... #edchatPH
absolutely agree! but it has to start somewhere. with the teacher, or with the school, or with the ministry of education? hmm... for such a big piece like, i would argue for the ministry because you need $$$ and significant support #edchatPH

A3 I think we all are guilty of giving up on a difficult child after trying out all the strategies. How can we continue trying for that one child? #edchatPH
q2 a2 @ApraRalli asked about awards. My biggest aha moment was when a high achieving, quiet voice asked we not applaud but instead give her a pass to go read anywhere. Had requests for shoes off, doing class on a balance ball. All want to be recognised but how...

YES! We are not the "sage on the stage;" we are learners, too! We have to model genuine inquiry & thoughtful risk-taking w/ our students. Begin learning with a question (rather than a "teaching point")โthis small tweak opens up the door to being a COMMUNITY of learners. #edchatPH

so true! This should be ingrained during inservice training.. mentoring has a big role on this but in our culture, mentoring is not yet positively practiced #edchatPH

@pdelrosario17, @Mrs_Gilchrist, @ginoloko
We can start out by giving them some choice and freedom in terms of how they present their learning. With time this model can evolve into an ideal situation where even what and why they are learning is decided by the students #edchatPH
In the private sector, we've been knocking at govt's door to subsidise private education. Even in small funding, we're able to cope how much more when there's govt support. We can hire more teachers. Improve our facilities to reduce number and stressors of teachers. #edchatPH
I was guilty of that in my first 3 years of teaching but I realized there'a something wrong with what I am doing so I had to read strategies and ask advice from great T friends, sadly I was not in twitteryet at that time #edchatPH
Iโm learning a lot about PH schools tonight. Thank you! So, how do these shifts look? What are the time frames for morning and PM shifts in schools? #edchatPH
A1 Since weโre humans too sometimes we do have favourites in the class. How can we minimise that by not making a deserving โfavouriteโ child missing out on accolades? #edchatPH

Wow! How quickly time pass by if things are too interesting to talk about.. I hope its the same in our classes but there are days that are not and that's when we need to keep going #edchatPH
This question is bringing up a lot of thoughts for me. 1) I read a great article the other day by @vanessalobue about rewarding children. Great read (as are all her articles that I've read): https://t.co/RvITMatCXx#edchatph
Thank you for the wonderful share, fellows. Backread I will do and reflect.
PEAC is doing it for the JHS. We need help in the elementary and preschool levels. #edchatPH
Every morning, when I do the rounds, I make it a point stop by..say hi and greet Ss.... Ts are kinda busy, so I make sure to linger during their break time or join them after school in the faculty room..#edchatPH
VIP can be for great personal gain in learning or passing 3 pieces in a row. It's goal setting for the mind. One student showed mastery after we agreed she could always have 12 minutes drawing time. Her attendance skyrocketed too #edchatPH
You should see them in action, specially those in the public schools. If I could find a link for a documentary, will share it with you. #edchatPH, got links on this to share?
Students learn best when they connect with teacher. Know them, encourage them and make them understand and believe that failures are the stepping stones and Then teach how to achieve goals by falling in love with learning! #edchatPH
We simply cannot give up. If it means getting help from other Ts, we do it. If it means we sit down with their parents, then we go meet with them. #edchatPH
Promoting student participation in running school systems is vital to giving voice to those who might not get noticed in the academic sector. Kids can run announcements, dismissal, lunch time cleanup, library jobs, etc. I've seen Ss who "hate" school but ๐ their job.
#edchatPH
I go aroynd during recess time and engage in small talks asking them how was their day at times I do to the library during recess and do read aloud #edchatPH
Q2. . In school, while we do encourage strong bond between teacher-student, how should we regulate Ts who join students in their personal activities outside school ? #edchatPH
@ginoloko I canโt. Oooh! We have several calendars to accommodate the student population/overcrowding here in my district. It isnโt always popular, but 5am. ๐คฆ๐พโโ๏ธ #edchatPH
